Testimonials New Feature - Question
Posted: 5/18/2013 9:06:45 PM

Ughhh i am so confused i have two people who wrote me a testimonial and i cant figure how to view them and i just joined like 3 days so i am new. but the instructions say they would be on your profile but i looked on my profile twice i dont see anything on the testimonials. Can someone help me out?

You don't have any testimonials. If you did, they would be at the bottom of your profile.

Profile info keeps getting deleted
Posted: 5/11/2013 10:58:26 AM

my tagline, about me info, and first date text keeps getting deleted.

That's what happens when the automatic filters find something they consider a no-no. It's almost always a string of seven or more numbers, usually in the form of a date, such as 2003-2007. It's meant to keep people from posting phone numbers, but other stuff gets caught, as well.

I can see his test results.

There should be a line directly under the menus at the top of the results page that says "Remove Test Results from my profile". It's clickable, even though it doesn't particularly look it.

question about the 'viewed me' feature...
Posted: 2/21/2013 5:52:56 AM

Over a 20 minute period, you see some of the same faces scrolling across the top of the screen and then coming back over and over again, maybe 10 times in a 20 minute period.Do you mean to tell me they are signing in and out 10 different times?

No. They're just moving around the site - opening an email, checking their matches, etc. Anything that takes them to a different page will tell the site they're still logged in, and those movements are what makes them show up on the Viewed Me page.

Why wouldn't you have the most recent signins taking their place?

Because that would make sense, and making sense is very low on the list of priorities around here, unless it will somehow also make money.

messages saying they are sent but no history
Posted: 2/15/2013 4:36:10 AM

the only word I can think of that might be offensive would be "ugly" in a sentence making a point.

The word "ugly" would have stopped the message from going through. It doesn't matter if you weren't using it in a derogatory manner - the filters that stop messages from going through can't determine context. They only search for forbidden words, and "ugly" would be one of them.

annoying little messages
Posted: 12/25/2012 7:21:25 AM
It sounds like what you're trying to get rid of is what is called hover text or tooltips. It's possible to shut them off for the basic functions on Windows 7, such as your example of hovering over the Start menu, but that won't help on websites, where they're coded into the webpage itself.

There are probably ways you could get rid of them even on webpages, but they wouldn't be practical if you're not very tech savvy to begin with. If you've already tried asking about it in the chess site's forum and gotten no solutions, I'm afraid you'll either have to put up with them or stop placing the cursor over the pieces.

Changes Age and Deletes Account Simultaneously??
Posted: 12/7/2012 5:02:48 AM
When a user is deleted by the system, if their name has never been used before them, they won't show up in a username search because all trace of them is wiped out. If there has been a previous user with that name, the previous user's information will show up in the username search, just as it would have before the second user opened an account using that name.

It used to show the date people deleted themselves, so it was easier to figure out what was happening. Now it's just confusing.

So I view, realizing that he would see, and spook him. He closes his account.

If you had viewed him before, he likely wouldn't have been able to tell you viewed him again, unless he was an upgraded member, so I doubt you spooked him. And from what you describe, he didn't delete himself, anyway.

How do you make your proper age show up?
Posted: 11/2/2012 8:17:54 AM
This used to happen regularly years ago when Admin was running the site himself. Probably the result of a process not running overnight. Everyone with a birthday on that certain date would have their age wrong by a year until Admin noticed, which usually happened within days, but I can remember one incident where there were several days close together that didn't update and it was months before it was corrected.

You've already tried to let them know about the problem, so apart from deleting your profile, there's nothing more you can do but wait until someone gets around to fixing it or your next birthday comes around.

Blank Profiles
Posted: 10/27/2012 4:25:22 PM
If there is no text at all, it's because the automatic filters that check the text found something they decided was suspicious and removed everything. The profile owner may not even be aware that their profile has been wiped, which is likely why they're not supposed to be reported.

Other people have solved the problem by editing the list of interests (for example, remove one of them), saving, then putting it all back as it was originally and saving again.

I doubt drinking will help in any way.

But, I think it's still hidden, and I can't find out if I am or not, and if I am, how to make my profile visible to the public again?

Your profile isn't hidden, and the problem with the hide/unhide link no longer appearing doesn't affect all accounts.

If it doesn't say the last login time for example: "online last 30 days". Does this mean that person is inactive?

If you're talking about what shows up when you get search results, then if it doesn't say "online today", "last 30 days", etc, then it's been over 30 days since their last log in.

downloading to outlook express
Posted: 7/2/2012 10:28:28 AM
but again it still sends what is taken from the inbox online into the trash online and i have to manually empty it.

A quick google on the subject found this:

http://www.msoutlook.info/question/568

which indicates that when using Gmail you also have to change settings in it to make sure copies (or originals, if you like) aren't being saved on the Gmail server. There may also be similar settings to change with Yahoo.

I don't think you need to complicate matters further by getting any other software. You just need to learn how to use what you already have. You can find lots of instructions online on how to do these things. That's why I don't understand why your consultant would be "flabbergasted". Even if he wasn't aware that the servers were saving copies, he should have been able to find a fix easily enough by searching online for one.

downloading to outlook express
Posted: 6/29/2012 9:17:41 AM
I don't have Outlook on the computer I'm using, so I can't check to make sure, but there should be settings you can change in it that will stop it from saving copies on the server every time it sends or picks up mail. I use Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook, and I can tell it to save copies for a certain number of days or not at all. Even the simple little email checker program I run lets me set that for each account it checks, so I can't believe Outlook doesn't do it as well.

I would question the ability of your consultant for not being aware of that.

The usual culprit is a string of numbers, often in the form of dates, such as 2001-2008. The system doesn't want you to post phone numbers, so longer strings of numbers are verboten and will cause the About Me, Date section, and Heading to be deleted.

Viewed Me, all seems to have gone
Posted: 6/25/2012 12:29:57 PM
That actually conflicts with Import's experience. She said the women who showed up in her viewed me were women who were seeking women

I don't know if Import actually checked the women on her Viewed Me page or if she just assumed they were looking for women because of what she found in the FAQ from 2007. That FAQ information was out of date for sure by 2009, because I remember testing it, and can provide links to forum threads from around that time where I mentioned doing it. Honestly, I don't know if that FAQ information was ever the way it worked. I think someone got it mixed up when they wrote it, but I wouldn't swear to it in court.

If what you suggest is true about some people never having people from other countries show up in their "Viewed Me," then how would that happen other than through mail settings?

The computer looks at your country. The computer looks at the country of your viewer. If they match, the viewer gets added to your Viewed Me page. But it sounds like country is no longer a limiting factor, in which case, all this discussion is doing is confusing the issue, just as the original mention of mail settings did.

BTW, I'm not just tossing out the "mail setting theory" because of personal experience -- I'm quite sure I've seen moderators say it in posts in the distant past (not sure if I've ever seen Markus say it), though that does seem to contradict the FAQ.

Many of the FAQs are very old, and things on this site change constantly. I don't assume the FAQs or even the moderators are correct unless I've seen the evidence for myself, or it's been tested recently by someone I know is willing to do the testing properly. That's why I no longer come here as often as I used to - the "help" forum has become packed with misinformation, some of it because it's out of date, some of it because people keep parroting information that was never correct just because they've heard someone else say it. It used to be the only place users could find out how things on the site worked. Now, it causes as much confusion as it cures.

And I take my forty lashes for adding to the confusion with my original post in this thread. With all the things that keep getting taken away from the users, it never crossed my mind that they would start putting a wider range of people on the Viewed Me page. I usually keep my mouth shut because I don't use the site anymore and I'm no longer sure how things have changed and currently work.

It would be nice if someone would test these things again for clarification.

It certainly would.

Viewed Me, all seems to have gone
Posted: 6/25/2012 9:29:08 AM

It's interesting that some of the mail settings work with "viewed me" and some don't.

I don't think any of the mail settings have anything to do with Viewed Me. They certainly didn't in the past, and although it sounds like there have been some changes, I doubt mail settings are taken into consideration now for those that show up on the Viewed Me page. The only way to know for sure is for people with plenty of viewers to go through them, check, and report their findings. That's how the FAQs were compiled - by testing and periodically checking that the information still held true. Unfortunately, most of the people who used to do that have moved on, but people keep digging stuff out of the FAQs that was written years ago and is no longer valid, and treating it as though it were the word from on high without checking to see if it's still correct.

I have always had "female" as my mail setting, and have never had a single male on my viewed me list, even though men have certainly looked at my profile due to my forum activities (including a bunch during my profile review).

I never had any mail settings, yet I never had any women show up on my Viewed Me page until I was testing how it worked and changed the gender I was seeking to female. Then I only got female viewers until I changed it back to male. But I have no idea how it works now. It's easy enough to test. It just takes people willing to put in the time, even though they know that what they find out today may change tomorrow. I totally understand why there wouldn't be many takers for that job.

I don't know what mail restrictions or IEs have to do with anything. They never had any bearing on the Viewed Me page, as far as I know, but if you have women and people from other countries then something has definitely changed. When Viewed Me was originally introduced it showed people from all over the world, but it was changed to only include people from your own country. Has it been like that for a while, or did it change with the recent wipe?

Unless something has changed, which is entirely possible, the only people who used to show up on your Viewed Me page would be from your country and the sex you were seeking. Being a fairly prominent forum user yourself, you would get views from all over the world. Do you have any from outside Canada?

I have looked at your profile today but you will notice that there is no notification to you that I have done so.

You wouldn't show for him anyway, because you're not in the same country, so that's not a good test of whether his page is recording viewers.

Time zone settings don't take.
Posted: 6/24/2012 3:15:22 PM
Places that don't have daylight savings aren't given the option of choosing timezones that work properly on this site. You can get around it if there's an area in Australia that's currently on the same time as you. Change your location to there. That will give you different options for timezones. Switch to the timezone that will show the correct time and save the change, then change your location back to the right one. The correct time will continue to show.

That used to work, but it's a long time since I've tried it, so I can't promise anything. And obviously you'll have to do it again every time daylight savings turns on or off.

The Interests Section is Missing From My Profile....
Posted: 5/15/2012 10:14:22 AM

Since several weeks ago (at least I noticed), my Interests Section is not showing on my profile. I haven't changed it for long time since initially I input but suddenly started not to show. It's written in right manner being separated by commas, as one of above posts is showing how to.

There was someone in here recently with the same problem. When he deleted one of the interests in his list, the whole thing showed up in his profile again. Try deleting one, or even the whole thing, save, then enter them again and see if that works.

user deleted their own account or deleted by admins?
Posted: 3/10/2012 4:23:13 PM
If you were just blocked, only the messages in your Sent box would have disappeared. Any messages she sent to you would remain in your Inbox. You would also be able to find her in a username search without it saying the account was deleted.

If all messages sent and received disappear, she's been deleted by the system.

If all the messages disappeared, she was deleted by the site. Still being able to find the name through a username search will happen if that exact name was ever used before by another profile and the owner of that profile deleted themselves. So what you're seeing on the username search could have been a profile that was deleted years ago.

And which lists on here don't say which forum a particular thread is on?

Click on a name beside a post to see the last 50 active topics they've posted in - there's no indication of the forum they're in. Or look at the list of the last 50 posts someone has made, find one that sounds interesting, and click on the title of the thread to see what others had to say.

but i would never delete ANYTHING IMPORT has to say!

You can't delete anything anyone else has to say. You can only delete your own posts.

How does one road-trip 'accidentally'?

By finding the topic on a list that doesn't show what forum it's in, and not thinking to check once you click on it.

Why is in the advance search function feature that the box in education is “stuck” on High School?
Posted: 1/19/2012 10:10:59 AM
Do your search, and when you get to the first page of results, bookmark it with your browser. Next time you want to do the search, use the bookmark and it will take you directly to the first results page without having to enter any criteria on the search screen.

Doing it that way also makes it easy to set up several different kinds of searches, all of which can be accessed with one click instead of having to change the fields on the search screen.

Yes, but I think it might do that even if you deleted the second account yourself. Easiest way to find out is to delete your current account and see what it says in a username search.

If you're talking about posting a link in regular email, rather than POF email, then whatever you're using to send email should automatically make a URl into a clickable link. It may not look like it in the draft copy, but it will be converted when it sends. Try sending one to yourself to see if it works.

New accounts like yours sometimes have a delay in getting email through the POF system for the first few days, so it's possible she sent it well before you got it. The time and date it was sent should be on the email, so you should be able to figure out whether there was a delay in delivery or she deleted herself right after sending it.

You're not allowed to put links of any kind in your profile. Doesn't matter if it's to 200 year old nude women or puppies and kittens.

If you're posting something important to you online, make sure you keep a copy. Websites go down all the time. You have no control over how long the information will exist unless you have a copy you can access yourself any time you want without relying on a third party.

suggestion - search by common interests
Posted: 9/5/2011 10:25:21 AM

That doesn't seem to work reliably. I just found someone with an interest and no matter how I searched they did not come up in the result. Everything else is "I don't care" yet still I get two people in 200 miles with the interest even though I stumbled upon two who are know meet the search criteria.

If you're logged in when you do the search, other factors, such as mailing restrictions, will prevent some profiles from showing up in the results. Doing the search while logged out will prevent that from happening, but you'll also get more people in the results that you won't be able to contact.
