The dumbing down of society and its impact on children and public mindset towards intelligence

To start, unfortunately, more money needs to be funnelled into education. Priorities need to be readdressed.

To teach a person to learn. What if we had been taught according to our aptitudes, from the beginning. At school we were all taught how to be average. The slow one's struggled and the fast one's learned to be lazy biding their time. Certainly education systems need to become more flexible (so deep in the computer age and our education is not personalized at all).

Also more teachers need to be available to mime proper social roles (sometimes children's only example of 'normal' behaviour... it is good if there is a teacher's aid and some level of interaction).

As for TV... I don't have one. If I really want to be braindead for a while, I watch videos of people falling down on youtube... it really only takes two or three minutes before I've had enough... much more efficient than anything I could see on TV.

I understand that you believe the bible to be the diety's dirrect words but I don't. When I pray I hear different music than you.

I still think that you appear to be a kind human being, though one with beliefs that in many ways contradict mine.

Goodwill to you.

There's a lot that's 'sketchy' about astrology, that doesn't stop me from examining it laughing and maybe even learning something. I want the time that the doctors wrote on the birth data chart. A few minutes shouldnt makes such a big difference. Poetically I suppose first breath would be best. (in terms of the ascendant one degree is equal to 5 minutes) 30 degrees to a sign, 360 degrees to the zodiac.

As for the Age of Aquarius again astrology IS SKETCHY, it is not an exact science, some estimates go back to the 18th century and others to 2020.

I could even send you back 3 or 4 chart analysis and you can point out your own.

Jesus would aprove of this expiriment.

Krebby actually Jesus's birthday and even birthyear are highly contentious facts. Most certainly however he wasnt born on December 25th.

'astrology types' I love this stuff... :-D

I am not off topic... I am saying that no one has a freakin idea what historical Jesus really believed, said or did... he has been a mythological and political figure for roughly the past 2000 years. His image was created. He was not born on Dec 25th. He was not a pale guy with blue eyes and blonde hair. We've got nothing right about the guy. and now we want to decide which way he would vote?

I have a running invitation to anyone on this board to send me their (or anyones) precise birth data (date, time and place). I would gladly run their data through the computer.

I wonder if there is something to birthcharts. I have analyzed mine, pretty freaky! I suggest that you do the same.

I am as serious about astrology as I am about other symbolic represations of the universe be they Kabbala, Chakra, Totemic, or classical Western Occult I see where myth and reality intersect.

So am I serious about astrology? You could say that it is a detached hobby amungst many. Am I aware of its flaws and contradictions? Of course. Everything is a working model.

Whoa there cowboy... while it is true that tensions are high between much of the Muslim world and the United States let us not forget that if he were Christian we could have brought up the genocide of the Americas, the crusades, televangelists, etc.

Though I do agree that the incident is troubling. We should not panic and assume things.

We know nothing about who Jesus was. Frankly, I believe that it is completely beside the point.

People are so focused on some dead guy that they forget that the kingdom of heaven is within and Jesus is with us (our conscience) as that perfected human being that knows right from wrong, strength from weakness, and truth from lies.

Spirituality is not about fancy impractical things. It is not about disco lights (well ok disco lights), and dogma, is it about understanding ourselves and our place in the world.

Some Jesuses are socialists, some are capitalists, some are marxist-lennenists, some are fascists, some are completely apolitical, I would go further and say that some Jesuses are atheists.

I would say that there are some (sociopaths) which operate without a personal Jesus-Krishna-Muhammed-Sense of Ethics-whatever (conscience).

I would also say that the story of Jesus, his myth was responsible for setting the stage for a leap in consciousness. And for over two thousand years we have moved through the age of Pisces.

In Pisces we were to learn to be kind, compassionate, selfless, and sympathetic, these we all qualities that the character embodied. Though the terror of war clouds the picture I would venture forth that the average person is likely more compassionate, selfless, and sympathetic then two thousand years ago when public execusions, torture and slavery were the norm in much of the world.

But now, as we enter Aquarius, the idol of Jesus falls aside as a mere dream vehicule for evolution. Our next lessons reflect notions of humanitarianism, honestly, inventiveness, and the intellect. Let our myths be reality! Let the truth of the mysteries themselves spark our imaginations. Science will show the way to our mythology-spirituality. All humans under one God (existence itself), a God of endless names and customs.

Fort Hood shooting - What are the questions? What are the answers?
Posted: 11/6/2009 1:12:16 PM
Question #1. Was the ramage politically or personally motivated? Or a combination of both.

Answers can be found by scouring the defendants personal belongings, notes, journals, communications, etc. It would probably be neccessary to go back many years in this endevour as it is entirely possible that he was a one man sleeper unit designed to infiltrate and await a particular time or instruction. It would be nessessary to examine every aspect of the crime and the person.

Question #2. If the even was found to be politically motivated then the next question would be whether he was working alone or in concert with others.

Question #2. If the event was found to be personally motivated then the next question would be to examine what could have led him to loose it. Was he harrassed at work? This is quite possible considering the current political climate. Was he overworked? What were the triggering factors?

Question #3. What can we do to prevent further such events? It is important to note that this event could (if personally motivated) be an inevidable part of a whole trend of symptoms that indicate high levels of stress within the armed forces; suicides, murders, etc.

Question #4. What is this events place in the greater scheme of things? The event must be contextualized. Was this a case of going postal? When work is so mechanical, so regulation bound that the human mind finds no meaning or input to make. Or was this a case of bullying and ultimate revenge?

We should all refrain our judgement until pertinent facts emerge. There certainly are numerous plausible scenarios.

the universe may have been born as a black hole and is still is. This
idea is not new, and there are a number of investigations that support
it; for example it was already shown long ago by Oppenheimer and
Snyder [24] that the inside of the Schwartzchild solution could be a
Friedmann universe. Moreover it was shown by Pathria [25] that our
present universe may be described as an internal Schwartzchid solution
if it has the critical energy density. More recent investigations [26]
based on the assumption of the existance of a limiting curvature have
shown that the inside of a Schwartzchild black hole can be attached to
a de Sitter universe at some space-like junction which is taken to
represent a short transition layer. Other senarios in which the
universe emerges from the interior of a black hole are also
proposed[27-33].

I know quite a bit about China actually, having lived in Taiwan for two years I got to know a couple Chinese dissidents living there. I have also been following the news of their persecution of Falun Gong followers, Tibetans, their Islamic minority and political activists. That's why I included China. I don't know Russian history quite as well though I have read quite a bit.

I didn't believe that I was rating countries... quite the opposite... Japan has a long a sordid past with oppression, as do Britian, France, Spain, and a whole host of other places... including the country of my birth Canada.

The way that I see it, some powerful countries focus mostly on oppressing their own citizens other coutries, with a different philosophical bent, focus on exporting this oppression to neighbours and the world at large.

China is in the former category while the United States stands in the latter although, as Earthpuppy pointed out so eloquently the States is doing quite well putting it citizens behind bars.

I would suggest that you read about the history of the CIA. I am curious to know... do you ever seriously read from a source critical to your initial assumptions?

Again it is nothing personal just politiks as usual... the cliche is true after all... power corrupts.

It is not that she is not intelligent... if she had more confidence she would have taken the time to break the question down and actually attempt to answer it in her mind. How can she answer it if she does not even believe that she can? I don't think that she even tried, she just shrugged her shoulders and said, "Math is hard."

supposed bad

Not supposed bad, actual bad. Why don't you accept the criticism? You can still bring up the good while admitting that cruelty and insensitivity have often ruled the day.

Ancient Rome did lots that was good... they also did a lot that was quite evil. It is nothing personal (unless it is your family that suffers) it is only politiks.

I could say the same about China, Russia, heck I can even say the same about Canada.

Power of the mind
Posted: 11/1/2009 5:40:55 AM
I have seen some of this myself during meditation.

Sitting down for 60 or 90 minutes I tell myself I will not move at all. 30 minutes pass and my leg falls asleep, 45 minutes pass and I am in excrutiating pain. As I have been taught I do not react to the pain, I do not feed it. I just remain detached. As soon as I am indifferent to the pain that now fills my entire body... it disapates and is now replaced by a glorious sensation of almost orgasmic bliss... same drill, I remain detached, I just observe but do not partake the sensations pass and leave me calm, deeply happy and satisfied.

Every single experience comes to us via the mind.

Hey Paul K
No conspiracy sites. These stats are in Iraq alone. Granted it is not solely from coalition bullets and shy of 1,000,000 (even with Afghanistan) but you do get the asymetrical response idea do you? You do understand overkill right? You understand that we layed WASTE TO A WHOLE FREAKING COUNTRY right?

A team of American and Iraqi epidemiologists estimates that 655,000 more people have died in Iraq since coalition forces arrived in March 2003 than would have died if the invasion had not occurred.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/10/AR2006101001442.html

As for history:
These are just three famous examples but there are MANY MANY others.

Spanish-American war, 1898 Surprise explosion of the battleship Maine at Havana, Cuba. 255 died. The Hearst press accused the Spanish, claiming that the explosion was caused by a remote-controlled mine. The USA declared war on Spain, and conquered Philippines, Guam and Cuba. Subsequent investigations revealed that the explosion originated inside the Maine and that it was either an accident, such as a coal explosion, or some type of time bomb inside the battleship. Divers investigating the shipwreck found that the armour plates of the ship were blown bending outwards, not inwards.

Vietnam War, 1964 "The Tonkin incident", where American destroyer Maddox was supposedly attacked twice by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats in 1964 in the Gulf of Tonkin never happened.

World War II, 1939 Operation Canned Goods. The Gleiwitz incident was a staged attack by Nazi forces posing as Poles on 31 August 1939, against the German radio station Sender Gleiwitz in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia, Germany (since 1945: Gliwice, Poland) on the eve of World War II in Europe. This provocation was the best-known of several actions in Operation Himmler, a Nazi Germany SS project to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany, which would be used to justify the subsequent invasion of Poland.

Taken from Wikipedia and 911review.com

It's not like the information is hidden or anything. It's only that some eyes are closed. Politiks is a VERY dirty game.

9-11 should have led to a massive international police action. Instead all evidence was destroyed and war was declared on an unrelated country. Very suspicious if you ask me.

To Jihad is to struggle. The highest Jihad is against one's stray impulses which prevent one from realizing God. It is unfortunate that much of Islam has been co-opted for political motives.

As for Physical Jihad (war against 'infidels?), the world needs more peace, more understanding, more compassion, more tolerance... all around. I am not cool with quasi-indiscriminately suicide bombing civilians.

Hey X

Do you consider what happened on 9-11 a travesty to the human potential?

Paul K

Yes, I consider what happened on 9-11 a travesty. I don't believe that violence is a legitimate way of handling greivances.

But, even assuming that the conspiracy theories are wrong and that it was the Taliban who flew those planes into buildings (and the ground) then our response was completely wrong. It called for police action, not military action and certainly not in Iraq. Let's see 3000+ dead by taliban.... 1,000,000+ dead by USA and a few other countries. Where is the justice for those 1,000,000 dead, most of which were as innocent as the people in those planes and in this buildings?

If cruise missles were to "fall" ouside your house, it would mean that they missed....... and they don't miss.

As far as terrorism goes, I think that you need to experience real terrorism, and then make statements as silly as you do.........................

Not that I would want you to experience real terrorism, but you really have missed what it really is.

If cruise missiles fall outside my house it might be that they were aiming for the place across the street and yes... cruise missiles, even laser guided ones do miss sometimes.

You believe that I need to experience real terrorism as opposed to the false terrorism? You are a funny guy Paul. I assume then that you have had the horrible unfortunate experience of watching yourself or close ones get blown up for political reasons? So sorry to hear that. Well at least now you know better than everyone else right?

Paul K... what is the difference between REAL terrorism and FALSE terrorism. Does it feel better when it was a 1,000,000 dollar missile that kills my familly as opposed to a 19.95$ suicide vest?

Let's see, if my family was killed out of collateral damage (cruise missile scenario) I would be really pissed off and devastated.
and
If my family was killed deliberately from a suicide bombing I would be really pissed off and devasted.

Seems like they are about even to me. Both are politically motivated murders. Both are travesties to the human potential.

One does not die from the kind of injury he sustained during the pepsi comercial. Furthermore he is seen standing and waving that he is 'ok' after the pepsi incident. Look at the video it is on youtube... that is not a dead man standing up and walking off the stage and I highly doubt that his double was always ready to jump in, at any moment incase he died.

While I agree that his physical transformation was astounding it didn't happen all at once, there was an evolution there and frankly, if they were looking for a body double for MJ they could have found someone who looked more like him than himself.

If your gonna do drugs to lose weight then you might as well use the really effective ones, I'm thinking crack-cocaine and crystal meth.

I don't believe that stimulants should be used for anything other than a temporary boost of energy which will require hydration and rest to recuperate from afterwards.

I am afraid that I lack the qualifications, time, and funding to do said study. I will stick to personal tests within my own body.

Unlike yourself, I never made claims (positive or negative) regarding this topic except to say that his diet seemed to work for myself and many people that I know. I am willing to examine different reasons why this might be so, including that the author might just have created 4 generally balance, but not-blood type related, diets.

I believe that your particular stance (hardlined disfavourable opinion) is better suited to the painstaking work of aquiring proof.

Burning Building Hypotheical
Posted: 10/12/2009 9:44:57 AM
I have been in a burning building before. Let me tell you that smoke makes it virtually impossible to pull people out, though I did call out my friends name for a long time (he had panicked and ran into the burning section) before running to safety myself. I would have dove in to get him if I could have seen or heard him.

It was an interesting experience, I felt no fear, was exhilerated, calm and focused and had a lot of physical energy, enough to quickly move a whole pile of stuff blocking the fire escape.

My friend ended up finding his way back himself. :-D So alls well that ended well.

Just opinion :-) just like those lovely nurses as the blood donation clinic.

I am afraid that barring any large peer reviewed studies (and there don't appear to be any yet) we are stuck relying on opinion (not very useful) and anecdotal evidence (more encouraging).

You, H2O, are confusing the issue. Sure there are hundreds of tissue/blood types, but there are a 4 main blood groups, A, B, AB and O. The blood type diet focuses on those 4 main groups.

Wrong! While Azerbaijan isn't the most tolerant person in the world he has clearly dirrected his ire at Isreal and Zionism, not against Judaism or Jews in general. There are Jews in Iran and they are living quite peacefully.

Questions to geologists about oil, its formation, etc....

We are getting desperate. Just look at what is happening in western Canada with the Tar Sands project. Arguably the biggest most polluting industry project in the world.

How old before I can stop training my core?

I've read your profile and I hope that you are working with professionals to at least guide yourself along your healing. The kind of accident it sounds like you had will probably mean that regular focused exercise is a permanent part of your life. But guess what, that trains character and discipline like nothing else.

It takes a while to rebuild a body. and then a lifetime to maintain it...

Are vegans and PETA more moral and ethical than society?

I agree with the jist of what you wrote but... there still needs to be room to discuss lifestyle as some are clearly more ethical than others. ex. Slave owner's lifestyle clearly not as ethical as egalitarian lifestyle.

Who Is the Father of All Sciences ?

Jesser83... I was agreeing with your point as to the innate bias of institutions, especially when deciding who gets the awards.

Let us hope then that Western Academia finishes it's global spread but at the same time absorbs as much both in terms of information and talent as possible from Non-Western Academia. Then we can call it Academia and get the whole thing over with.

"Empiricism is a theory of knowledge which asserts that knowledge arises from experience."

I agree that animals are capable of aquiring knowledge from experience. I suppose then that the animal brain is the Father of all Science in an ultimate sort of way. Our ability to interact with the world created a need to understand and predict it, and voila! The need for science was born.

Thank you Greek dude(ette)s for teaching me (well teaching my forepeople) that I have a rational mind separate from my imagination. I can imagine that there are monsters but that does not indicate that there actually are. Thank-you Newton for helping us do cool stuff with all that knowledge that we had aquired. I for one am glad that we are able to send satilites and hamsandwiches into orbit.

Of course we have run the clockwork universe full circle and now must again make adjustments to our understanding of Reality (also with a capital R but that's another thread).

It might happen that there won't be a 'New Father' to the next wave of cutting edge science. It might be that today's more widespread media, greater talent pool and increased specialization of individual frields will create a host of luminaries rather than specific figureheads.

Gotta love Wikipedia... it's mostly right! I think...
"Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") refers in its broadest sense to any systematic knowledge-base or prescriptive practice that is capable of resulting in a prediction or predictable type of outcome. In this sense, science may refer to a highly skilled technique or practice." (aka The Scientific Method)

Who Is the Father of All Sciences ?

I'm not sure if you've ever heard of Grunt-Grunt, probably not because she was around long before writing was invented, anyways, she was the first Homo Erectus to create a human-made fire. Her exact method was probably to strike pieces of flint against stone and capture and feed the created sparks. In my opinion, her powers of observation and determination were a cut above the rest of her tribe and her discovery roughly 1.6 million years ago served us and continues to very well indeed.

In reality I believe that we should pay homage to Grunt-Grunt and rename all lighters to Grunt-Grunt boxes... especially the childproof ones.

I do agree with some previous posters that our history is far too concerned with individual genius. I am sure that most great scientists were but a part (albeit an important part) of a whole society of thinkers.

But in maintaining the integrity of the thread I would posit Newton as the Father of Today's Science... though he is about to be usurped by his son (as fathers tend to be)... who that son is/will be is too early to tell, but that son symbolizes New Physics.

A math question: Is there any way to increase your odds when buying lottery tickets?
Posted: 10/1/2009 10:49:36 AM
Everytime I don't play the lottery I know I win a dollar, it's garanteed!

If you really want to gamble (and stand a decent chance of winning) get into poker, no video poker, but the real thing against real live people... at least you can get better at that.

I believe that the standard for lotteries is to give back 20% of what they earn through tickets as winnings.

Casinos, I believe, offer a 30% return.

As long as there are still Mayans then the Mayan civilization still exists. It is wrong to believe that north american first nations are extinct. Although I do agree that the radical transformation the culture has gone through has eliminated the priestly class pretty much completely.

Jeebus!

Did I ever say that Chinese Medicine was the best form of medicine ever!!! Of course people want options. Did I ever say that Western Medicine was an evil plauge upon the world?

You guys will exagerate, distort and twist...

Another interesting perspective to read about it Cuba. Who has been forced (due to sanctions) to rely much upon alternative therapies, to generally good effect.
