Things I learned living in Oklahoma
Posted: 6/11/2008 5:30:30 PM
As a life long Okie, there are just a couple I thought of right off the bat that you missed.

1. We don't wash our clothes we "warsh" them. It drives my son nuts when I say that one LOL

2. We don't most generally do things we do them mosurnly. hehehe

If you can't tell I am a 4th generation Okie and all my grandparents were farmers.

Funniest pranks you ever played on people or were played on you
Posted: 6/4/2008 8:32:22 PM
My sister is the one who actually did this. When she was 16 she worked at our local version of a 5 and dime store. There wasn't anywhere close to go to lunch so everyone always brought a sack lunch and left it in the fridge. For several weeks different people kept "losing" their lunch. They couldn't figure out who was doing it because everyone took lunch at a different time. The managers lunch even got taken a couple of times. SOOO my sis decided she would fix a "special" lunch for the culprit. She made up a mixture of peanut butter, jelly and a bottle of syrup of ipecac (sp). She left this "special" lunch in the fridge for a couple of days and it got taken. Needless to say they figured out who had been snitching lunches when one of the guys spent the entire afternoon running to the bathroom LOL. Served him right. HEHEHEHE

20 responses to use with telemarketers
Posted: 1/24/2008 6:58:46 PM
This is a little off topic since it has to do with bill collectors instead of telemarketers.

I was out of work and being plagued by this same man from the same company every single day!! I finally told him "You know, I had to go to the food pantry to feed my kids this month, they don't care much for veg-all, do you take payments in canned goods?" He never did call back LOL

Funny Names For Kids
Posted: 1/22/2008 11:54:48 AM
This first part may be a repeat since I didn't read ALL the pages. I always thought it was weird that George Foreman named all of his sons George, he has about 5, that is pretty weird.
When I was in elementary school we had some kids from Thailand transfer in. Their father thought that the Thai names would be too hard to pronounce so he translated them. One boy was Super Rock and the other Super Apple Chalaingcarn.
When I worked in telemarketing I always thought the Japanese last name Takashita looked pretty funny.
I hate to admit this one. My redneck aunt named my cousins Tammie Lou and Peggy Sue...eeeeek. Their brother is Mark Anthony and he went and married a Misty Dawn.

I honestly don't know what people are thinking since they are saddling their own offspring with those names for life, and setting them up for lots of teasing.

Heaven only knows where my recipe for that is. I used to decorate cakes all the time. I do know that you want to google royal icing. It is the type that uses eye whites and creme of tartar etc and sets up hard. I used it one time to make some cat tails for a pond cake :) . You can mold it into almost anything.

Easy super meal for those when they are strapped for cash and looking in the cupboards
Posted: 1/17/2008 7:54:44 PM
I came up with this when my kids were small and their cousins came to stay. Of course I was a couple days from getting any money and had to feed 4 kids on what I had. The cousins called it aunt debs delight LMAO....they wanted me to make it when other stuff was available.

half lb ground beef
half pound ground sausage
I had just a little of shredded mozzarella, shredded cheddar and 2 slices of american cheese
white bread
I browned the sausage and hamburger together and drained it
I toasted several pieces of bread
put the meat mixture on the toast and top with the mixed up cheese (I chopped up the american cheese slices)
put it in the oven just long enough for the cheese to melt

Just what I had in the fridge LOL

Donuts anyone !
Posted: 1/16/2008 11:28:05 PM
LOL My mom made those when I was a kid. ACKKK that was a long time ago. As for biscuit type the cheap cans work the best for this. I showed a Cherokee friend this who makes fry bread all the time and she was amazed LOL. We used all the different coatings mentioned at one time or another. I do find that coating them while still a little warm works better for me.

Cooking fresh water fish???????
Posted: 1/16/2008 11:03:36 PM
HMMMMM maybe it is an okie thing but we always mix flour and fine corn meal. Dredge the fish in it. Beat up an egg (or however many you need for how much you are cooking) and dip the fish in the egg and then dredge again in the flour and cornmeal mixture (oh forgot season that mixture to taste) then fry in a skillet with oil just deep enough you need to flip it. Cook until browned.

UMMM YUMMMM have you people had crappie???? It is the yummiest!!

Trick for storing until later. Place the fish in a container and just cover with water. Freezing it like an ice cube. The fish will keep for a year like that and not get freezer burned.

Numbers Stamped on Cast Iron Skillet Handles -- What do they mean?
Posted: 1/14/2008 2:55:06 AM
I was going to say that some of those old tools may be a lot better than the ones you can buy today. I have a lot of old kitchen tools from my grandmother and they work great. The only thing you have to watch out for is if the handles are painted wood. The old ones were pained with led paint son if it is chipping off you could end up getting led poisoned. Fortunately the excellent spatula for icing cakes that I have that has a wooden handle all the red paint has completely flaked off. The plain wood is holding up great like a good wooden spoon. Enjoy your "treasures".

50lb ham from the boss
Posted: 1/14/2008 2:39:37 AM
This is a little off topic so I thought I would post it separately. LOL My dad was a homicide detective while I was growing up. When they had a jane or john doe he always had them sent to the same funeral home. At Christmas they would bring a canned ham by as a gift for him. It had a big sticker on the outside of the can that said Moore's Funeral Home which pretty much covered up the label on one side. More than once it caused some pretty weird looks from people who saw the thing sitting on the kitchen cabinet LMAO....I guess they were thinking "A ham made at the funeral home??" LOL It was pretty funny seeing those looks.

50lb ham from the boss
Posted: 1/14/2008 2:35:14 AM
Pupdaddy, maybe it is one of those chopped, pounded, rolled and reformed things that they call hams these days. They are about the same as lunch meat and they still charge like it is a REAL ham.

As for getting rid of the smoke flavor I know that food that is salted to preserve it is soaked in water for a day in the fridge and then the water disposed of before cooking. Ham has a lot of salt it it. You might try something like that with one of the slices after the butcher cuts it up for you and see if that takes some of the unwanted flavor away. I know when they smoke meat the smoke flavor is mostly concentrated to the outside. You could have the butcher cut the outside into pieces before he slices the rest up. The smokiest part would be good in a pot of beans, or given to someone who likes smoked ham.

Broke my rolling pin!!
Posted: 1/14/2008 2:24:28 AM
I can't afford a marble rolling pin, but I do have an excellent surface to roll things out on. I had a friend who installed marble counter tops. In the process they end up with left over pieces. I have a rectangle shaped leftover piece that is about 2 1/2 ft by 3 ft. I keep it on my counter all the time. I use is for a sandwich board when I am not rolling anything out. When I go to make cookies, sometimes if I am in a hurry instead of refrigerating the dough for several hours I pop the piece of marble into the freezer while I am mixing up the dough. When the dough is ready the cold from the marble lets me roll them out without the dough being all tacky. I put a piece on the marble and squash it out a little first then flip it over to chill the other side. It works pretty good when you are in a hurry or suddenly have an urge for cookies that the dough is normally refrigerated. I bet if you checked with a place that installs marble counter tops you could probably get a leftover piece pretty cheap if not free.

Can you convince some one else healthy cooking is worth it?
Posted: 1/14/2008 2:09:05 AM
I know one thing that put me off on processed foods. I am sure you can find on the net somewhere the FDA regulations for what is allowed in processed food. Things like rodent feces, hair, dirt, bugs, insect larva etc etc etc.. Just knowing what all is in and allowed is enough to put you off of processed foods. Just knowing what all is allowed to be in a frozen pot pie kept me from ever eating them again and it has been 30 years.

One other comment I would like to make is the "fresh" veggie thing. Most "fresh" veggies take so long to get to market from being stored in warehouses until ordered that a lot of the nutrition value is degraded. The flash frozen veggies are frozen asap after picking. Because of that unless you are buying local, in season, farmer or truck market veggies the "fresh" ones at the grocery store are almost as devoid of nutrition as the canned ones. ALSO ALL of them frozen or "fresh" should be rinsed thoroughly to remove the pesticides that are applied to make sure they look pretty.

hmmm...recipe for dealing with your local skunk!
Posted: 1/14/2008 1:40:20 AM
You are right moth balls are toxic, that is why I picked them up once the skunks left. I don't know if this will help but it is worth a try. I successfully used this when a male cat sprayed and that is a pretty hard odor to get rid off. The product if you are in the US called Fabreeze....I swear it kills almost ANY odor.

Now for the carnivore repellent. Years back I was having problems with all sorts of critters bothering my garden out in the country. I went to the local zoo and got some lion and tiger dung.....whew does it smell bad. It did do an excellent job of keeping raccoons, deer and I don't know what all from eating in my garden. If you are near a zoo, it works really well and I am sure they would be happy to give you some for free, like they did here in Tulsa.

Good Luck

Opps..unexpected kitchen accidents.
Posted: 1/13/2008 1:00:09 AM
The worst mess I ever had to clean up was wayyyy back in the day. My mother was making a pot of beans in an old style pressure cooker. It had a rubber type ring that made sure it was well sealed. Evidently it decided to wear out while the beans were at full pressure. I am sitting in the den and BOOM!!!....I was errrr WTH??? I head into the kitchen and those brown beans were EVERYWHERE!!!! Even on the ceiling. It didn't take them long to dry out up there and I must say that scrubbing them off the ceiling was a grueling experience. Kinda funny now, but a major back ache back then.

This is actually a comment on the growth hormones. A few years back in countries where the amount of growth hormone was not regulated there were problems. There were actually children going through puberty as early as age 9. When that problem was discovered they started regulating the amounts. So the growth hormone really does get into our bodies and can cause problems in children.

Left over mashed potato
Posted: 1/12/2008 6:28:36 PM
I do something similar. I know there is almost always going to be left over mashed potatoes. When I drain the water I save it and put some of the cubes into it (I usually make an extra potato for that). Then after dinner I add the leftover mashed potatoes. Then I just add some onion, garlic salt and a few bacon bits and we have potato soup.

Fat Flushing soup diet.
Posted: 1/12/2008 6:24:30 PM
I think you have a point. If you put canned green beans in at the same time as raw carrots, by the time it was done the green beans would be unrecognizable. The only other thing that confused me is why on the veggie day, if you are supposed to avoid corn and beans you would then "treat" yourself to a baked potato?? They are all carbs so why not have the corn and beans if you like and skip the potato?? Soups like this are usually better the second and third day but after that um ewwww. Also you are only supposed to reheat anything no more than twice for health reasons. Don't want to get food poisoned. I think maybe the point of this is if you can survive this regimen then you are probably better prepared to start eating better and making a permanent change. I would also skip the Lipton soup because of the MSG and other preservatives. They have chicken base that doesn't have preservatives that is a paste. You could use that to enhance the flavor.

No Bake Cookies
Posted: 1/12/2008 6:09:08 PM
Thanks people. I was actually looking for my recipe. My original that was on a 20 year old piece of paper with spots all over it LOL, got lost. I had found one on the net but it just wasn't quite right. Between the different ones that have been listed I think I can reconstruct the one I used to have. My kids love these and they are a good source of fiber and protein compared to most cookies.

Stuff to do with tin foil
Posted: 1/11/2008 10:39:05 PM
Well this isn't a recipe but has more to do with cooking than alien hats. : / I saw this on one of those TV cooking shows. When you have fried something on the stove and have the grease leftover (from bacon for example). You take a piece of aluminum foil and put it on the top of a glass and make a sort of cup out of it. You can safely pour off hot grease and fold it up and toss it in the trash later when it is cooled and congealed.

BTW it is aluminum foil....for some reason the Brits seem to think there is an extra syllable in there and pronounce it aluminium (with an extra i) don't ask my why LOL.

hmmm...recipe for dealing with your local skunk!
Posted: 1/11/2008 10:03:02 PM
This is a little off topic, but if the skunk came into your yard, I know a way to keep them at bay. Skunks hate the smell of moth balls. If you place a few around the perimeter of your yard it will deter them from coming in. I used them when I was in college and a skunk family decided to move in under my trailer house. Was a toss up which smelled worse LOL. Once the skunks moved on I picked them all back up.

are afternoon naps ok once over 45
Posted: 1/9/2008 5:01:45 PM
Over 45??? I don't think I would have survived when my kids were toddlers if I hadn't napped when they did. The nap made it a lot easier to keep up with them later LOL. I still nap, but more so now because I stay up late and get up early and need a nap to get even 8 hours sleep in. I saw something just recently that in some cultures that sleeping in broken sessions throughout 24 hours is common. At any time of the day or night people in the community would be up doing something and others sleeping. Maybe it is a cultural thing.

Death or Divorce
Posted: 1/9/2008 4:34:29 PM
Stacismom,
I understand exactly what you are saying. My X has taken little to no interest in his children financially or in their lives. I know for sure if he had died they would have gotten more financial support from SS. It has been 15 years and he still drags me into court periodically trying to get the child support that he doesn't even pay reduced. It sends a message to his children that he doesn't think they are worth even the small amount of support he is supposed to pay. My daughter is 16 now and just realizing that she is NEVER really going to have a "daddy". It would have been less painful in their case if he had died also.
Just for the record, he has paid more to lawyers trying to get out of support than if he was paid up in full. Go figure???

Things Co-Workers do Funny or Strange
Posted: 1/9/2008 4:16:29 PM
This wasn't a co-worker but a fellow student in a biology when I returned to college as an adult. The assignment was to take a swab and make a slide to look at all the creepy things that were on common surfaces under the microscope and share what the teams had found with the rest of the class. One (pretty strange guy) says he is going to get a swab of something from the restroom and leaves for a few minutes and returns. So the class was going around and looking at all the germs and other micro-creatures that had been put on slides. We get around to the "strange" guys slide and OMG there were sperm on his slide. UMMM EWWWWW ....was pretty creepy then but funny looking back on it.

Aquatic Experiment
Posted: 11/27/2007 7:00:04 PM
It's been a long time since I kept lots of fish but I did actually have some fish that mutated. They are common in the stores now but I used to trade them for all sorts of other fish. I had 12 tanks. The fish that mutated had been in a 5 gallon tank in a house that burned. They were red swordtails. Five days after the fire we found them still alive. They were babies and the tank had cracked and insulation had fallen in the water. I rescued them and all their offspring were the rainbow variation of swordtails. I guess all the stress did it. This was WAY back in 1975.

If you want to see fish change for the experiment then start with all female guppies. Make sure they are mature and female for SURE. If you leave them in the tank with no males to breed with, at least one of the females will change into a male. I have seen this happen more than once. The idea was to keep them from breeding but it doesn't work.

If you want to see predation then get an oscar. They will eat the guppies. Make sure that you provide plenty of cover and the guppies will continue to breed and the strongest Will survive to keep breeding. Someone mentioned oscars get up to 14 inches. I have seen them Much larger. The more you feed them the bigger they get. In nature they are a very large fish, but the size of your tank will determine how large it or they will grow.

I quit keeping fish except for very common fish that can be bred in captivity. Using unusual fish invariably means that they were collected from the wild. The methods used for capture are barbaric and bad for the environment. This is a much bigger problem with salt water aquariums. They use dynamite or cyanide to stun them and they often die shortly after you buy them from the shock. This is destroying reefs in the south pacific and I find it totally unacceptable. If you want to see salt water fish, go to a public aquarium.

Yes I know my spelling isn't perfect. Good luck with your experiment.

What do you think, Is Creativity divine or is it all ego based?
Posted: 11/27/2007 5:20:16 PM
IMO it is divine, a blessing. I am not really the creative type, unless you count being good with duct tape and bailing wire LOL. I do have a daughter who although she has a reading disability that she is in therapy for is an excellent writer and is in advanced placement classes because of it. She "wrote" her first stories before she could actually write. She would draw pictures and tell me the story. She is also very decorative and artistic and has had a knack for building things since she was very small. This talent showed up WAY before ego would have been in the equation.

Is sexual preference and orientation a learned behaviour or genetic?
Posted: 11/24/2007 11:33:45 PM
I don't think there is enough information on these questions yet available for me to have a solid opinion. I just thought I would add some food for thought.

Recently there have been several cases of human chimerism studied. While watching a documentary on this subject I began to wonder. If a human is a male/female chimera then there would be a case for homo/bi sexuality to be of genetic origin. Just because a person appears on the outside to be male or female would not necessarily mean that their hormones or brain makeup matched their outward appearance. Just a thought that crossed my mind.

Long hair on older women
Posted: 11/16/2007 9:17:36 PM
I will soon be 49 and have worn my hair long almost all my life. Now it is down past my bra strap. My sister and I are mistaken for twins. She has her hair cut really short. The stylist Really messed it up. That has happened to her more than once. She spends more time on messing with her hair than I do. Once when I was very young my mother insisted my hair be cut short for summer camp. I got a bad cut and ended up with a pixie cut. I cried for weeks. I have worn it at least shoulder length ever since. I use to curl it and mess with it but I don't any more. I wear it down to go out but up when I am working to keep it out of the way. I think it is a personal decision. I have the same hair dryer that I got for my 16th birthday because I never use it. It is a lot easier to deal with long since it is straight and doesn't cooperate even when I try to have bangs. I think how you wear your hair is a personal decision. Some people look better with short hair, especially if it is thin. I have enough hair for 3 people so it doesn't look scraggly long. I really don't understand why there is so much discussion over something that should be entirely up to the person who's head it is on.

Fresh Water How Much Is Truly Left?
Posted: 11/4/2007 7:51:20 PM
Most elementary school science books are not very accurate. It took millions of years to charge all the aquifers that we have drawn down through indiscriminate use of water for crop irrigation. Do you not realize that the Colorado River does not even reach the Pacific Ocean any more because of all the semi-arid land being irrigated in Cali for food production? We are using up fresh water faster than the "WATER CYCLE" can replenish it. We need to implement better forms of crop irrigation.
Places like Las Vegas and all the waste of fresh water is just irresponsible.

As to the dust bowl, the drought was not so much worse than what some places are going through now. The problem was the way all the prairie was tilled up for use as farm land in an area truly not suitable for that type of farming.
Vast amounts of fresh water are being released as we speak as the ice caps melt. It will depend on where you live how much of a problem fresh water will be.

Speed Of Light -- You Are The Photon -- Question

OK, I actually read all four pages and am amazed that there is some actual thinking going on at this site. The only thing that is bugging me is the comment that was made that there is "absolutely nothing" beyond the edge of the universe. With all the various dimensional theory going on would not the other side of the edge of the galaxy be just possibly the next dimension over?? Physics truly is not my ken and I know just enough to be dangerous.

The future of relationships...
Posted: 8/18/2007 5:39:18 PM
Am I the only one old enough to remember the game mystery date? I also remember playing a game with cards that supposedly told your love future. Kids live in a fantasy world.
Just for the record, there are a lot of people on this site who seem to be totally consumed with looks which is totally superficial and certainly not dealing with reality. If middle aged men are on here looking for Barbie then we supposed adults are not much better than the teenagers.

is there good and bad tattling? if so how to define it

Unless it is a serious situation that is or could cause harm the rule in our family has always been "No harm, no foul." They really do for the most part need to learn to work things out for themselves.

Dollar Store Junkie!

You have to watch out on the tp, sometimes that 20 cents more at the grocer gets 50% more product. I know the batteries are a real deal. They don't last as long as the name brand ones but you get more bang for your buck from them. I would like to add that if you get a bottle of sudsy ammonia you can make your own window cleaner. The formula is one part sudsy ammonia to 20 parts water. It will be clear so use an old window cleaner bottle or make sure to mark the bottle. As for the person who mentioned Dollar Tree....I used to be an asst manager. Some of the stuff is a good deal and some of it isn't worth the buck. You just have to check what is available at the time. Sometimes they have name brand food for only a dollar. Happy bargain hunting :).

How many sinle parents have their kid or kids with no help?
Posted: 8/5/2007 9:42:17 PM
My ex husband took off when my two teenagers were babies. I have never had a support net. I can't say that it has been easy. Until Child Support Enforcement went after his drivers license he rarely paid anything. Now he thinks it should be lowered when he is 20k behind. He doesn't see them much and it is probably better that way. I don't think I have done so bad on my own. Both of them are actually pretty good kids (of course not counting the normal teenage PITA stuff LOL). They are both on the honor role and eligible for scholarships :). I must have done something right.

So Round So Firm & So Fully Packed! So whats the Problem!

shipoker, HI! Would have replied personally but your settings wouldn't let me. I just can't stand it when ignorant people run their mouths. No hidden agenda here. I don't understand why people don't try to get to know people regardless of their size or shape. As Mr. Kleenex as you put it has shown us, being in good physical shape doesn't mean that you are a good candidate to date.

Mr. your ignorance is showing. We can be sure you have no big bones of any sort if you have to be bashing people. There are really truly scientifically small, medium, and large boned people. Why don't you talk about something you know about?? Why do I get the feeling that you must have dropped some of those weights you have been lifting on your head???

betterlate, I am glad you brought this up. There are many, many things besides how much you eat, how much you "walk for health", work out at the gym, etc. that affects the size of a persons body. Environmental cues turn things on or off in our DNA. People who assume that just because you are carrying some extra weight that you are not taking care of yourself or are just a lazy slob annoy the he** out of me. Personally, with all the crazy crap that has been going on around the world. I will be around to watch all you ocd skinny gals croak. I only need a small amount of food and of course water to last 10 times as long as you do. I know "skinny" people like to act like it is all willpower and exercise. News Flash NOT!!! and Latest Edition....my lack of it isn't why I am bigger. Just by giving birth you change the chemistry of your body and it may never be the same. They have already proven that DNA is at least half of the body size equation. What happens during your life can have big effects too. Not even identical twins with identical DNA can avoid the effects of things in their environment. For the men, I think a lot of you are just shallow and looking for something that looks good on your arm. I have seen men on this site looking for a "princess" that look like something the cat drug in. Why the double standard. It isn't like you are looking to procreate anymore. I didn't fit into a size 10, much less an 8 or less even when I was thin. I don't eat greasy food and cheese cake. I probably eat about half as much as the teeny little things.
Why can't people get over the size thing? What is in a person's heart and mind have nothing to do with the package it is in.

What would our kids think
Posted: 6/25/2007 10:52:47 AM
SHEESH my kids know I am crazy LOL.....who isn't with 2 teens still at home....my son even calls me a "crazy old woman" sometime ( not in a derogatory (sp) way) LOL Both of them know I have had relationships and of course are not stupid enough to think that all you do is talk when you don't come in until 6am LOL.....I do make a point of leaving a name and phone number at least for first meetings so my daughter doesn't worry. I have always been open with them about sex and although I am 99% sure neither of them has had sex yet they do know where condoms are. I get them from planned parenthood and they are all colors and sorts LOL. I don't give them any details but I don't think they think ewwww! My son and I sometimes get into conversations where my daughter says TMI!!!! but ya gotta learn sometime LOL.....my son brought something up a few weeks ago that isn't fit for posting....I almost LMAO!! So he knows I know about sex.....I had them didn't I?

TULSA AREA GET-TOGETHER??
Posted: 6/25/2007 10:30:00 AM
UMMMM Shawn.....it now costs at least 18 bucks a person to rent a raft....saturdays minimum of 4 people or paying for 4.....I was down to the IL River last weekend and it is running good (last year you had to drag the raft half the way)....the water is nice and clear from all the rain....Speaking of rain....might have to do a club if it doesn't let up soon. Where are all the men in this deal....is this just going to be a hen party??? Also if the idea is to get people in from out of state I think it would be best to locate a decent motel/hotel and try to get some discount rates....might also be a good idea to have it in a Hotel club in case some are not in any shape to drive. I have been to some 4 state area get togethers from another site. It does take a lot of coordination and time.

TULSA AREA GET-TOGETHER??

If the plans end up lake oriented I think Skiatook Lake would be better. In case you have never seen or noticed Keystone Lake is brown. All the lakes around here are man made and Keystone is the oldest and murkiest. Personally if I am going somewhere when it is hot I would like to be able to swim and cool off. I don't think I want to swim at Keystone. Also it will be most likely pretty dang hot in a couple months, so maybe we could shoot for Sept. or a club. Just my 2 cents. :)
