Horcoff sucked last season too so there really isn't a good comparison there.
The Oilers are hopefully recovered from the flu and on the winning track again.
Dustin Penner - 21 points
Dany Heatley - 19 points
and you all harassed me for championing Penner.
I think Quinn has confidence in Horcoff too - otherwise he should have been tossed off the first line long before his injury. I think Horc's worst enemy is himself.
I thought I recognized that

I've been doing a yoga for athletes class and there are quite a few men in the class. It's good because many of us have tight calves and hamstrings and are therefore less flexible. Stretching these areas and becoming more flexible is helpful against sports injuries too. This class is more about improving flexibility and strengthening than anything.

The point patent pending makes is a valid one. We have mostly the same team with some of our key players injured and our record is nearly the same as it was with a healthy roster. Comparing this year's team and last year's team is pretty much apples to apples while saying the injuries sustained this year are comparable to other teams in the league is apples to pomegranites - yeah they're both red but that's about it. If we had last seasons's relatively healthy roster this season, I think we would have at least a couple more games in the W column. If we were fielding a significantly different team this season, as many of those you list do, then it would be more comparable. The fact this team has improved with new coaching really bothers some people when they should just be glad we're on the right track here.
MacT is gone - good riddance - get over it already.

Gagner has never been afraid to fight. He has had a good scrap every season he's been in the league - most memorably in Vancouver his first season.
Seeing Penner succeed does my heart good.

Calgary: The silver lining of the recession
Posted:

Oil companies are starting up their projects again - my company is getting new contracts because of it so things are slowly starting to improve.
As for the "luxury" restaurants and hoity toity bars being closed, well good! There is definitely a niche for them but not as many as seemed to spring up everywhere. In times like this, the quality ones win out. Even if they are expensive, if the food and service are good, they will survive.
One good thing was housing prices coming down. Those who still had jobs were able to buy or upgrade their homes. I have taken advantage of the better mortgage rates and will utilize the renovation tax break. New floors and a new bathroom for me!
There is definitely a silver lining for some of us and I know I have been lucky.

Well from the way they've been playing the last couple seasons, they do need to get back to basiscs. From the look of the preseason, coaching 101 is a good thing!

From Quinn's postgame chat, he's trying to get the players to actually play as a team! What a concept. I think once the final cuts are made, he's really going to put them to work learning how to operate as a unit.

I will not miss MacT behind the bench at all!!
He was always one for good sound bites though. This from the OilersNation blogsite...
MacT starts early
TSN sent out a release today announcing that Craig MacTavish will be in studio for 25 games, debuting September 21st when Pittsburgh faces Montreal.
MacT was never one to be love with the media, and now that he is “one”, he had some fun with it.
“I’m happy to finally be among the experts where the issues are many and the solutions obvious. I appreciate TSN providing a safe haven for unemployed coaches as we rehabilitate ourselves towards future employability.”

I'm sure there will be some choice quotes from him this season.

I think it's only going to be a matter of time before Comrie is signed, especially if he has a good training camp with them.
Tambellini said there were no talks with Comrie; today Comrie comes out to say they're talking. Make up your mind already. What does Tambellini have to gain by denying what everyone already knows?!

He's going to skate with them from all accounts but hasn't been signed yet. There will have to be some other moves made I think to sign Comrie. At 1.5M he would be a steal of a deal but would that mean moving Horcs to the 3rd line? How many more small forwards do we need?
There really isn't a spot for him. His return would do a lot for the image of Edmonton though. He was the leader of the "Edmonton Sucks" parade.
I am looking for Penner to have a great year and Cogs too - I think Cogs is the most underrated Oiler. If Quinn can't motivate Penner and Nilsson, no one can.
As far as the parking at Northlands, does that take into account how many were lost when the expansion of the Agricom happened?
I think moving the arena downtown is a great idea. They should have park n ride in addition to the trains like they do for football games.

The last 5 posts on someone's profile were how I discovered the forums in the first place. Maybe they want to cut down on new forum traffic?
I like the last 5 posts feature but as to how many favourites someone was on, I found it inconsequential. Are they in contact with any of those favourites? Who knows. It's just somone who found someone else appealing to look at. Most of the people on whose favourites list I appear, are people I've met. I don't think it's any indication of their commitment to finding a date.
I have found some very interesting forum posts and topics while wandering through profiles.

Thats not My job it's His and vice versa

In this day and age one needs to be capable regardless of gender. I think a lot of people are afraid to attempt some jobs themselves. I moved the ceiling fan from my dining room to my bedroom and hung a new fixture in the dining room myself.
When my neighbour needed her above stove mounted microwave replaced, I helped her with that.
My other neighbour tiled her kitchen herself.
Tools are not scary; you just need to try. If you think you are in over your head there is nothing wrong with getting help, advice, someone else to do it.
In the "average" two person household, both people probably work outside the home. Work to your strengths. For instance, if you are a better cook, then cook. If you'd rather do outside stuff, mow the lawn and shovel the snow.
If we lived traditional (old fashioned) lives, then the traditional gender roles would apply I think. Since we do not, everyone, regardless of gender, has to do their part.
However there are jobs men are just better at - namely moving heavy furniture.
Lastly, let's not mix chivalry into gender roles. That is a totally separate topic.

Be true to yourself and it won't matter what other people think.
There are going to be people out there who aren't going to like you for one reason or another regardless, which may or may not have to do with your orientation. It's hard to not care what other people think but in the long run you will attract people to you who care about you.
No one is perfect; we are all just individuals trying to get by the best we can in this life, just like everyone else. I remind myself of this little bit of wisdom quite frequently because it puts everything into perspective for me. No one has all the answers, no one.

Losing out on Dany Heatley kinda sucks because he would be a good addition to the team. He's a goal scorer - something we don't seem to have these days.
That being said, I'm glad we finally stopped waiting. His silence spoke volumes, like the guy who says I'll call you and never does. Yeah right.
I am interested to see how these guys we do have perform under our new coaching regime. I am hoping Penner pulls it together without being publicly thrown under the bus all the time. I am hoping Horcoff looks more like the pre-shoulder surgery Horcoff. I am hoping Gagner and Cogliano keep developing into the fine players they're becoming. I am hoping Nilsson gets his head out of his @ss and realizes he's not good enough to be a prima donna (yet). I am hoping Quinn realizes Hemsky is not a centre.
This all may be too much to ask but even if this list is partially realized, it will be a big improvement.

ESPN says no to tweets
Posted:
8/5/2009 11:12:51 AM
Twitter is a fad that seems to be waning.
I think people go too far with their status updates. Unless it's information regarding a celebrity or your favourite sports team, how many people really want to know you're bored at work, tired today, going to the bathroom, etc? Do you really want people to know that much about your personal life?
I think ESPN goes too far in that people can't twitter what they want. Unless they're doing it at work, ESPN should butt out of people's personal lives.
What people don't seem to understand is that when they broadcast so much personal information, there really isn't any privacy anymore per se. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you if your employer deems it unprofessional. Facebook, myspace and twitter are all uncharted territory as far as unbecoming behaviour goes with your employer. It's one thing to be wild and crazy at the bar one night and entirely another to have evidence blasted all over the internet. People don't think about things like that when they post their personal lives for all the world to see.

What goes on between the ears?

but it won't help in maintaining that positive outlook if the bulldozer decides to take another run at you.
No it won't but it will certainly help you recover quicker because those with a positive attitude tend to bounce back or it will give you the wherewithall to get the hell out of the way.
To become a positive person through self talk and thinking positive thoughts you truly need to believe. I think it's all about attitude. It's about "being", as a state of mind. As "they" say though, "fake it until you can make it". I think if you tell yourself something often enough you're going to believe it. Ultimately you're not going to change your attitude unless you want to. I don't know if it's so much covering up what's really inside of you as dealing with it, learning the lesson and moving forward a better person for the experience.
I agree with you in that the industry is about getting what you want but I also think you have to look past that. Not even positive thoughts will stop bad things from happening but it will help you deal with them. Books may give you the tools to learn to be more positive but it's up to you to make them a habit. If you send out positive energy, it will attract positive energy which, in return, will make you happier. If you're happier, people around you tend to be happier. If you encounter someone who is not happy, your good mood can rub off on them too and so if you can brighten their day, it's all worthwhile.

Having a positive attitude certainly makes your life a lot easier. I don't understand how you think being positive is unrealistic. Since when does realistic = pessimistic?
I think things like the Secret have something to them. You can't always will yourself to do the things you think you want because they're not always the things you need.
I think if you have a positive attitude you will draw positive things to you. When faced with a challenge, I look for a solution rather than dwelling on the fact there is a problem.

Learn to Golf Edmonton?
Posted:
7/24/2009 10:51:52 AM
I started by golfing at my company tournament.
If you do decide to keep going at it, start with low cost clubs,
I got my first set at a garage sale for $25. I now have a much better set I got for Christmas last year. The driving range is a very good place to start. Go with a friend who golfs and is willing to give you tips or try out a golf pro at the range (or from the course clubhouse if it has both facilities).
I'm told it's a good place to meet men...sigh.

Breast reduction!
Posted:
7/24/2009 8:47:09 AM
The bottom line here is that you have to do it when you're ready to do it. Regardless of whether you're going to have kids or not, it's a personal choice. Before I had mine done I spoke to a ton of women who had also had it done. Fortunately I worked retail at the time and was able to ask about it in relevance to my job. What I learned is that everyone's experience is different - some have more sensitivity after, some have less. Some can breast feed after, some cannot. Some want "two raisins on a breadboard" when they come out of it. With the number of women I spoke with, and no exaggeration it was around 100 minimum, only one woman regretted it. She'd had a surgeon in Vancouver who hadn't really done a great job; she was very self conscious of the scarring.
Get a sportsbra that does up in the front for after the surgery and get lots of rest right after. Sleep truly is a great healer.
If I had waited until after I had kids to have it done, I'd still be waiting and that would have been a shame. a*little*lonely it's okay for you to say that was the right choice for you but it is not for everyone. I would have missed out on almost 10 years of feeling fabulous. Clothes fit better and I have more bras than one woman should have but it's so freeing to be able to buy cute, sexy, pretty and cheap! ones in the same places everyone else can rather than breaking the bank on one or two superduty ones.
It was amazing to me how I became a person rather than an object. It's not the first place people (men) look whereas it used to be the focus.

No Heatley? Works for me
Posted:

I am happy with our goalie upgrade. I cannot stand this Heatley drama! Figure it out already will you!!! He'll come to Edmonton if there is no one else to take him? I understand the Rangers are done but there is still a three way deal floating out there with the Wild and San Jose. I really don't want to see Cogliano go but if we can land ourselves a scorer who can mesh with Hemsky, then I guess that's what it will take.

Rope, Coil, Tater and Earp

Rodeo stock is very valuable and therefore very well looked after as you have said in your post. Some top bucking horses used to be ranch horses that have gone "sour". By being good rodeo horses they have a new career rather than going to the proverbial glue factory.
As for roping and wrestling, yes they get a good jolt when the rope tightens (in the case of calf roping) but doesn't really hurt them much.
There is much worse abuse of animals going on in the world. These animals are well fed, well looked after and valued unlike some so called "pets" who show up at the humane society. The focus needs to be refocused on the animals who are really being abused and that's certainly not rodeo stock.

Sheesh I hope not! Well now that all of the drama is over with the first round, I wonder what will happen as far as trades go. There are a ton of rumours out there. Evidently Heatley's stock dropped huge today too. I wouldn't mind picking up Heatley but Murray doesn't deserve a king's ransom for him.
Most interesting rumour - Horcoff to Montreal????

I think Gilbert would go before Vishnovsky. Strudwick wouldn't be a huge loss to the team either. Nilsson, Brodziak, Staios and Poulliot I wouldn't miss that much either. I would really hate to see Cogliano traded. I think he will be a force on this team once he has time to develop.
As for Heatley, I wouldn't mind seeing him play with the Oilers. Isn't rather ironic the Ottawa fans want him out because he's an underachiever? I think we have enough of those on this team already.

Help!! - Minus 15
Posted:

So are they younger if they're the "gentleman's rule" of half your age + seven or as in this case at - 15? Guys will always have math to justify age differences.
Sadly I think there is some truth to Trubble's comments.
That being said, I think as long as two people get along well, who cares about age? As you get older, the age difference seems to shrink as mental ages balance out.
What matters more than age is where you are in life. You both have to want to be working towards the same goals. If you're with someone who's in their 30 and still thinking about kids when yours are already grown and you're thinking about grandbabies, there is a definite disconnect there.

Some people wouldn't be happy with whatever choice was made. I think as a pair, the two of them will be able to fill in the blanks where needed. Even better Billy Moores and Charlie Huddy have been swept out too.
Quinn was the winningest coach out there when he was coaching. Not only that but he's not MacT. He's been around the NHL for a long time and a lot of players really like and respect him. I think our free agent frenzy will be a lot more successful than it was before.
I have hope for the team and this upcoming season. You have to give these guys at least half a chance to show what they can do and do together.

Some direction for our team and some succession planning for the future. We still have Buchy though - the jury is out on that one.
I am glad we went with experience. Crawford would have been a huge mistake and our chances at getting Sutter were slim at best, especially now that Keenan has been fired.
I am holding out on judgement until we see some hockey again. Shake up the roster a bit and then see what these guys can really do.

Another Creepy POF Story
Posted:
5/22/2009 7:01:06 AM
I saw the hottest guy I've ever seen at a 7-11 once. I totally would have dated him!
You're going to meet people of all types just about anywhere. I've met great people on POF; I've also been contacted by people I would't meet if they were the last person on earth. You can't just say anyone you'll meet on POF will be a predator. Ted Bundy seemed totally harmless to the people who picked him up. Would you help someone who looked like they needed the help while they were on crutches? I probably would. I wouldn't necessarily offer them a ride too but that's not the point here.
You need to exercize some common sense and listen to your gut.

Punks get away with it again - it's not their fault, it's South Park

South Park always has a message to it though. In this case - acceptance of everyone regardless of their hair colour. South Park isn't lowbrow humour at all; it's actually quite smart.
That being said, South Park really isn't good television for children. Morals and values should come from parents, and yes, other role models, not television. Just look at who we have as role models for our children in the public eye - Britney Spears, Kobe Bryant, Paris Hilton. Wow, there are some good morals and values.

what do you think is tougher to dump or to be dumped

This is such a good point...
it’s always helped me to realize that the person who dumped me was never going to be able to love me the way I wanted to be loved
although the rational mind and knowing you're better off doesn't really soothe the hurt as much as we'd like.

I think it's all about how the whole thing is handled. You can't control how the other person feels; if it's not there for them, you can't make them love you. Bunny boiler alert!!!
If one day, out of the blue, you are dumped for no apparent reason, that's tough. Maybe deep down you saw it coming but that usually only comes in retrospect. If your relationship seems to be going along fine then it's hard to see what went wrong.
For me it's about closure. Yes it hurts but knowing why rather than going through the disappearing act drama is much better for the healing process. I think there should be "exit interviews" so both parties can move on and hopefully be better partners in their next relationship.

Long Distance Relationships

I have tried it a couple times and it's certainly not easy. It would not be my first choice to start my next relationship but if he turns out to be my true love, I think it's worth the trouble.
Communication is the key here. You can stay pretty connected via phone, email, etc.
Haha to you who thought someone would leave a "crappy little town"!!! Small town life may not be the big city but sometimes it certainly has more to offer. Never assume someone wants to move to the big city.

edmonton dog walk

There are a lot of dogparks in the city for offleash walking. Leashed walks with dogs are more difficult because they want to run and play and you end up with a tangled mess. I would suggest an offleash park so the dogs can run and if you don't trust your puppy yet (which I don't blame you), you can keep her on a leash to figure out how the doggie world works. It's so important to socialize your pet; otherwise you end up with a beast who just wants to terrorize the other dogs.

I don't think they're going to make any decisions on coaches until after the playoffs are over. There are guys whom they are speaking with and I'm sure there will be the dark horse you never saw coming entering into the Oilers sweepstakes.
What I am wondering, like sleeps - will they make a decision before or after the July 1st draft??? Will not having a coach in place affect trade decisions or free agent decisions? I think there are few decent options out there but it will be interesting to see who they come up with in the end.

Do we go into relationships, knowing that it will end?

There are no guarantees in life but that being said, expecting a relationship to fail makes it doomed from the start. If you never give it a chance and it fails, you shouldn't feel justified saying, "Oh I knew it wouldn't work out anyway."
I think you can have too many expectations in the beginning though. Let it work itself out in the beginning. If you both enjoy each other's company and want to spend time together, do that. Let it grow and then go from there.
This has been beaten to death but it still bears repeating - our society is too instant these days. Everything has to happen
right now!
and if it doesn't then it must mean there is something wrong even when it's going along okay. You can't have fireworks and roses every day.
Do you honestly think there will be no problems in the relationship, nothing to work through? That's just naive thinking; you have to be willing to work through them. There are going to be times when you're not on the same page but you have to work to get back there. Honestly people work harder at keeping their working relationships more copacetic than their romantic ones.
Personally I think accepting people for who they are is an important part, if not the most important part, of making a relationship work. You can't change someone into who you think you want. When that happens, how many people break up saying, "They aren't the same person I started out with." Well no kidding they aren't.
If you go into relationships expecting them to fail from the beginning, you probably need to work on yourself first before you can have hope for a successful relationship.

I think they get themselves into enough trouble by not keeping it in their pants as it is.
