Childhood songs that comfort you now?
Posted:

For me it has to be "River Road" by Crystal Gayle. I'm a rocker by nature but this was the one and only song I could tolerate from my parents, who typically blessed me with the likes of Gene Pittney, Charlie Pride and Carol Baker. Ahhh...I still remember those long road trips with both of them smoking one cigarette after another in the van with the windows rolled up tight (it was cold you know), mixing nicely with the fumes from the leaky exhaust pipes...hmm...wait a minute...maybe I was just high! Maybe Crystal was really a horrid singer and this was all an illusion! Wow! Clarity DOES come with age!

Can't get enough of Europe!

I just got back from a whirl-wind one month tour of Europe and the Mediterranean. I love it! The culture is amazing, the history fascinating, and the food so "clean" (you know what I mean...no chemicals, preservatives, MSG, growth hormones, etc). I will not hesitate to go back again, and would not hesitate to go back again with the travel mates I just returned with. So much fun!

tubes tied and the health risks that come with it(women only)

I had it done 9 years ago. No problems getting someone to do it...I went to a female doc. No complications since that time, and absolutely NO regrets! I have 2 kids in teen years now and one nearing double digits. Best decision I ever made quite frankly. But that's just me and we are all different....
Besides, nowdays they don't cut, they twist and clamp, making it easier for those who regret the decision and want a reversal. Stay healthy and it should be pretty painless.

I love you!
Posted:
7/14/2007 12:49:28 PM
What I'm hearing from everyone is that there is no way to really and truly SAY "I love you" in a manner that gives the appropriate value to the words. I have always felt that...and right now I am involved with an amazing man...and I struggle every day to tell him how I feel. I have given up on telling (I still do, but again, it never seems like enough), and I just show him. To me, nothing in life becomes anything until you put it into action...desires, dreams, wishes, needs, etc. are all nothing until you realize them through action. Love is like that for me (same with regret and sorrow for wrong-doing).
So what do I do? I support him. I listen to him. I help him without being asked. I share with him. I talk to him. I ask him. I confide in him. I touch him. I believe in him...In every way I can I show him how much I care and how much he means to me and how truly wonderful it is that I have him in my life to share our ups and downs. WOW...I feel great just saying that! WHAT A RUSH!

Bureaucracy survival tips....
Posted:

Agreed...and I have begun the process of moving into the private sector. However, it's not the job I hate...it's the bureaucracy. The system seems to stand in the way of acheiving the very goals that have been set out by the system in the first place. Disillusionment is, in general, a common end result for people I am guessing. Starting this thread was to help shed some light on this problem and to offer some serious help to those who are still submerged in the system and think there's no way out. I appreciate all the comments posted here, and in particular I thank you Mixalot for being so candid. Anyone else facing this issue ( and reads this thread) can only benefit!

Kids who see white lights

Anyone out there in POF land know anything or have experience with kids who say they see white lights ( and the kids are NOT in an active state of psychosis)? I am curious. I know that are books written, but I have some personal first hand experience with a child like this and want to hear from others that have some insight...

Bureaucracy survival tips....

Ha! That was my first lesson when I found my personal identity reduced to a number in university. Annnddd...I agree about the voting issue...if I actually believed in the government I was voting for, then it might make a difference. The government I currently work for is far from tansparent, interested in coming in under budget, not because it is the "right" thing to do but because it secures the bonuses for the managers and CEOs, and the people in power are willing to sacrifice clients and staff for a few votes. So, again I ask...how does one survive this treachery?

Unionized yes...dog-eat-dog...is so! Just because you have "protection" from unions does not mean that you have protection from your unethical coworkers or psychopathic managers, CEOs and other leaders! It just drives the shitty behavior underground, makes it more subversive and therefore much more damaging and harder to track or prove. Personally, I would prefer to deal with someone who tells me to "f-off" to my face than to try to frame me by "losing" the documents I just handed to them, or telling the manager that I never gave it to them in the first place...anyone else know what I'm talking about? I know you are out there..come on...I want to hear from you!

Can anyone provide our POF friends with some much-needed advice, tips or just general self care ideas when they work in or with government bureaucracy? What is the key to survival? What does it take to make a change or a difference when the environment seems so unethical and dog-eat-dog?

My friend is a Child Welfare worker...and following a nasty apprehension and emotional explosion by the parents, the dad gets her into a room by herself at the office and asks her if she might like to go out for chicken sometime! Not coffee...not drinks...CHICKEN! What? I was waiting for the "Kentucky" to be added and I've heard it all! She's not only not interested at this time, but she is also a vegetarian! And the Child Welfare office is not exactly the setting of the Cinderella story.

Influence

This one is easy for me...my kids! Never before have I had to contend with the range of emotion they bring out in me. As a result, I have had to come to terms with all sorts of areas of my life, from my own feelings of self worth to my need and drive to protect my young'uns. I have had to grow emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and yes, even had to take care of my physical well-being because if I wasn't there, who would look after the monsters? LOL. My kids have forced me to face certain truths and certain falacies about my life, and in particular made me remember how to set priorities (is someone really going to disintegrate if they see my kid's bedroom a mess, or is it more important to have fun one evening while we ignore the mess in the bedroom...hmmm?). Yep...the people who have had the most influence on me...my kids! A close second...good ol' MOM!

I had a guy tell me that the man I was dating was dating was the luckiest man alive and that he hoped that that man knew the calibre of woman he had in his midst.......he was sincere, and so full of integrity that he then left me alone to develop my relationship as I needed. I still talk to him every now and then, and he still tells me the same thing.

A coworker was very emotionally unhealthy and unable to work her way through it. I gave her my necklace pendant ( a crystal said to be great for healing and health). I wore it every day as it had been a gift to me. In the moment I felt the need to pass it on to the next person who really needed it. She didn't know it was from me.

The patience my kids are trying to teach me; the memories my family have given me; that I have been given the gift of an open heart in spite of it all; the health of myself and my kids; my ability to see things for what they are in the end; my ability to not put up with crap if that's what I see in the end; my willingness to love and be loved; chocolate; music; books and Cosmo magazines; bubble bath; campfires; those that will willingly and lovingly take part in all that I value and treasure, not because they feel obligated, but because they care about what matters to me.

Stressed out!!!!!
Posted:
8/25/2006 8:19:34 PM
Let me suggest the best book ever written for those hard to manage children..."The Explosive Child" by Ross Greene...second edition. It saved my life with my son, and it's written for parents, not psychologists. The reality is, some kids can't be managed in the same way as most others...with time outs and removal of priviledges. It simply doesn't work for them and you just end up feeling like a failure as a parent and your child is chronically in crisis state. This book will simplify it all. But here's a warning...let go of all your preconceived notions about what parenting should or ought to look like, and forget what everyone else tells you about disciplining...go into it with an open mind and life can and will get better. My son is nearing 14 now, and we still have our moments from time to time (because he's still an explosive child), but amazingly we have a relationship and we still like each other. He's independent, working and has solid friends now....and isn't that the name of the parenting game?

Hey, I agree with those of you who don't believe in sitting back and letting love find you....does the fridge stock itself without a bit of effort on our part...do your friends know you are a friend if you've never taken time to visit with them...do the flowers grow without water and sunlight....NO! So why do we think we can be passive and observational and suddenly love will find it's way to our laps, nurture iteself on nothing, and we will reap the rewards like children with a good crop of candy? NEVER, EVER give up! On anything! If you want it, get out there and get it. Watching reruns of "The Golden Girls" by yourself every night of the week is considered to be an active participant in life!

Overwhelmed?
Posted:
8/25/2006 7:51:56 PM
I think back to what my grandmother always said to my mom...who of course says it to me, "There will come a time in your life when you forget about all of the tough stuff. The battles and the fights and the poor behavior all melt into a blurry mess, and you forget what it was all about anyway." My kids are getting older now (teens) and interestingly, despite the fact that the early parenting years were marked with challenges, I have a difficult time remembering some...no alot..of the things that happened. I think it's a neurological thing that happens too...like when you have a big problem and it seems insurmountable..then you sleep on it and all of a sudden in the morning it all seems managable again. This is alot like that. In other words, everything comes to pass eventually, even though at the time it feels like the biggest kidney stone you ever passed! Kids are the most amazing creatures on this planet...savor it all, because some day it's over...Here's to my offspring!
