Project Natal
Posted: 7/2/2009 12:09:34 PM
As the name states, it's just a project. No where near a finished product. (example, does not work well with dark skinned people).

Bigger issue I see, is obviously it must be a heavily algorithmed design. Which makes me think, ok, where are these calc's being offloaded to? Since the 360 is maxed, either you lower the quality of the titles to compensate for the extra processor time, or you make it a external unit with on-board processing. Which jumps the price of the Natal camera to probably close to a low end 360.

Just seems like a microsoft toy that just isn't there yet, nor will be with current gen equipment.

Women VS Men separated status
Posted: 7/2/2009 11:19:33 AM
I completely understand... I'm separated so therefore I have nothing to offer. The only way you could ever have a fulfilling, loving relationship with anyone is if there is no previous paperwork. That is the key to happiness, doesn't matter whether they seem like the one or not..

Oh.. if anyone needs any cats.. I have a friend at the shelter.. she can hook you all up!

Why not trinary computers?
Posted: 6/5/2009 7:03:45 AM
I really don't see the advantage of a Base 3 system. You wouldn't really be doing anything faster or easier. If anything, the opposite. How do you implement a multiplier with a Base3 system? Binary is simple as it is a shift and add structure. I do logic (ASIC/FPGA) design myself and I could see the logic exploding to 10x size to implement the same functionality as binary. Yes, quantum computers and spintronics are starting to come into play now, but they can only really handle specific calculations.

Oh, and the third state couldn't be x as that is a don't care in digital design.

Ok, how much does my profile suck?
Posted: 3/25/2009 12:53:51 PM
Hi,

Just wondering if I can get a profile review. Not that anyone has really looked at it yet, but when/if they do, I don't want it to be too crappy or average. Need some kind of edge.

Thanks!

Pet names - original or not?
Posted: 10/23/2008 1:58:58 PM
I've always used a different one. I would think it weird to use the same one on more than one person. Thats one step away from calling the current by the ex's name, which I could see happening for me, so a different for each.

Car Question
Posted: 6/3/2008 11:29:51 AM
If the car seems like it loses all power then kicks back in, then it could be your ignition module. If it still somewhat seems like its trying to accelerate but chokes, then it could be your fuel pump or throttle body pump (not sure if its referred to as a pump or not)..

Have Children.. Want Children?
Posted: 1/24/2008 2:05:43 PM
I've been curious about this for a while..

Ladies, what does it mean when you say you have kids and that you want kids.. Does that mean you want more kids? Or does that just mean you don't want to get rid of the one you have?

why is a quad core better?
Posted: 10/30/2007 12:41:29 PM
That is correct. The only reason intel went to multiprocessor cores is due to the fact that as the geometries shrink, the leakage current goes up, which causes the chip to flow alot of current through it, causing it to overheat and break VIA's, etc. Intel did make a P4 4+GHz or something like that, but they couldn't keep them from overheating so they went to 2 cores. Also, besides leakage current, transistors (in digital circuits/std cells) only really use current when transitioning (clocking persay). So 4gig vrs 2-2gig uses much less current as well. Of course, parallelism must be coded into the app to take advantage of the second or more cores.

Also, due to process variation in chip manufacture, plus taking into account speed differences with heat/setup-time/hold-time we cannot clock current CMOS technology at those rates mentioned (14GHz). If you can, then your max critical logic path would only be 2-3 gates, which you couldn't design a processor with.

Yes, Everyone is entitled to their opinon. But this "cause it's illegal" excuse is rather sad. I can understand if it is a personal choice or whatever, but to choose what is right for your own life based off of what the corrupted government says is another.

Oh.. I hope those with that excuse also refrain from anal sex in many states as that is illegal as well. You wouldn't want to put your life and family at risk. Oh.. and don't be gay in some countries either.

This is probably not the best place to discuss hardware/software development/specification.. Chances are very very few people on here know much on the topic.. I do digital design and silicon layout myself..

My suggestion is to check out edaboard.com, i've found it's possibly the best forum online related to engineering/programming/design.

And yes, I agree on your observation about this section of the forum basically being tech support..

IT job post questions
Posted: 3/5/2007 12:06:22 PM
Im pretty sure they are refering to administration of the box. Basically admining the phone mail system. Most of the time it is done via a rs232 serial port on the box. That would probably be the easiest part of the job as all you'll need to do is read the manual for the box.

He'd rather be with a single mom already with kids than have his own
Posted: 2/22/2007 8:18:15 AM
After reading these respondses I had to respond.

I feel the same way about not wanting to procreate but would have no problem adopting or caring for my SO's child. It has absoluting nothing to do with not wanting respondsibility or anything like that..

My reason is because this planet has way too many people on it to begin with. For me to think that I have the "right" to procreate is selfish in my opinon. There is not enough food for everyone on this rock right now, why should I bring in another to consume. I could go into it more for my reasons which are all related to my initial reason but I don't have time at the momment..

Vista Search? Ether im a idiot or...
Posted: 2/12/2007 9:07:36 AM
.inf files definatly still exist in Vista for drivers. This I know for sure as our driver sets still use and work in Vista.

I personally find it sad that this simple function no longer exists. It should not require a 3rd party app. Alot of programmers and engineers won't be too impressed about it.

Just another reason for me to keep XP and not waste my time with Vista.

I am currently trying to attempt something I always thought was quite simple. All I want to do is say, search all *.inf files containing the text "blah" for instance. Did Microsoft decide that we don't need to do this anymore or am I missing something?

Thanks

Format war here we go again, HDDVD vs Blu-Ray
Posted: 12/21/2006 7:42:05 AM
It's hard to say who will win, but one company (don't remember who at the momment) has already created a reader/writer which uses diffusion grating to have multiple focal points, making it able to read HD-DVD, Blu-ray, and standard DVDs.

Basically it may just end up like DVD-R and +R. Originally incompatable formats, now it doesn't matter what you buy anymore as you can burn/read both.

Also, the prices of both will drop once there is decent volume production of the blue wave lenght laser. Currently the main problem is yeild concerns hense why they was only a limited number of PS3's availble. Just not enough working blue lasers to go around..

Assembler vs C language
Posted: 10/29/2006 12:05:42 PM
There is a list of reasons why assembly isn't mainstream.

1. Development time. It takes 10x times longer to write a application in assembly than C.

2. C is portable. You can compile, if coded properly, across multiple platforms.

3. Handling large data which is cross referenced differently is next to impossible. Basically try to do Object Oriented in assemebly.

4. If you have a timing critical subroutine, you can always write inline assembly, not to mention you can write more than 1 inline routine for which core you are targeting.

5. Yes, C often turns into bloatware, but hey, if it wasn't for C and the sadder scripting languages, we wouldn't have PCs right now with a gig of ram standard and 3gig hyperthreaded, multicored processors.

I agree though, I do perfer assembly over C, but when it comes down to it, im sitting at my desk at work with a deadline up ahead to get product out the door, what ever is quicker and does the job properly is what the customer is going to end up with. I myself got sick of the higher level programming, so I went backwards and learnt hardware design (Verilog/VHDL).

can non-pot smokers handle pot smokers?
Posted: 10/27/2006 10:19:25 AM
I can understand why someone would not want to date a pot smoker.

But I hafta comment on the dumb thing. Sure, there are people out there that smoke and are lazy, but overall they were already lazy, the weed just makes it easier to not get up. As for IQ points going down, weed does not kill brain cells, proven. Yes, it does affect your short term memory, but that will come back after getting off the weed for a few months.

I've been burning for almost 11 years now, and I'm not dumb. In fact I know quite a few engineers and physists which burn everyday.

Of course I live in Canada, which is more accepting of the passtime.

AMD or Intel Whats Your choice people!
Posted: 10/19/2006 2:05:34 PM
AMD, just because Intel has been kicking that x86 architechure so long that they just don't deserve to exist. Atleast AMD is beating them at their own game.

Not to mention that the x86 design sucks so much that to get the speeds they run at now its actually a RISC core internally with logic in front to convert the CISC opcodes to RISC.

Also, clock speeds no longer matter anymore when you have multiple ALU pipelines and out of order execution. Not to mention you currently can't really pass 3Ghz (in a digital system) with current CMOS technology due to the large leakage currents and heat dissipation.

Microsoft is at it again
Posted: 10/6/2006 8:17:58 AM
Since im assuming that Vista will use a new HAL, it will take alot of disassembly and code stepping to crack it. Not to mention im sure that there will be more than one set code related to activation throughout the OS.

My guess is 1 1/2 to 2 months to crack. And the crack won't cover off all of the countermeasures in OS on the first to third go.

MEMC Electronics Incorporated and Polysilicon
Posted: 10/2/2006 1:58:56 PM
Ok.. so were talking raw substrait.. umm.. I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can as I work for a fabless-semi, so we don't deal with any raw materials, just design and finished packaged silicon.

As for who else, I googled it and found a list at the following site. Says their the second biggest supplier, so I assume they must also supply places like TSMC (worlds largest chip maker), UMC, etc.
http://mmoll.web.cern.ch/mmoll/links/silicon.htm

Demand for raw silicon is going to follow the cyclical demand for chips, etc. If I remember correctly it's around every 4 years or so. I think we just finished a downturn as demand for fab time is going up again. Foundries are also opening new fabs or planning new fabs, so the demand will continue to increase. Also, even though the transistors keep shrinking, the parts are becomming more complicated, so the die size overall doesn't change. As long as we keep putting silicon in everything then the demand will continue.

As for the company, I know nothing about it.

Some of those last questions I just can't answer. I don't think there is a "advangtage" to be had between different processes because regardless the foundry is going to want as perfect a lattice as possible. Also, I think from what i've read they make the wafers all the same way. Molten silicon slowly lifted and rotated from the vat.

--
Edit: After checking them out it appears they have a large line of wafers of varying traits, so there must be some patented processes involved in that.
--

For more info you could possibly ask at www.edaboard.com but I don't think there is alot of process engineers there, atleast that I've come across.

I know about semiconductor manufacturing as I have taped-out (sent GDS files off to taiwan for manufacture) 3 times. I mostly do layout. If you just want to know the physical process of manufacture, there are many books out there on the subject. Is there a question your looking for a answer to?

I want to learn how to program
Posted: 8/29/2006 1:20:45 PM
My opinion is you start with good ol C.. Forget the ++ (OOP), forget the # (thats not even programming.. thats scripting).. Find some of those learn in a month books and just go at it.. Once you get good then you can start worring about GUI/OS interfacing.. Plus once you get the hang of it you can always throw in your own inline assembly to speed up your routines/algorithms..

If you wish to learn to program properly to the point where you can write your own embedded firmware, interface to RTOS's (real time OS's) then C is the way to start..

If you want to make webpages and windows only applets then pick any of the other ones mentioned..

Not to mention.. after enough time in C/Assembly, you can move on to Verilog/VHDL and start designing your own hardware..
