New Age Restrictions Set By Admin: Message Restrictions
Posted: 5/22/2013 2:50:29 PM
It seems to me that this comes down to the fact that too many people are just too stupid to figure out how to set age limits on their profiles. So, all these young girls are leaving the site and stating that the reason is because of all the "old pervs". I would reference Marcus' post to that effect, but I don't care enough to go look it up.
The age restriction does not effect me personally. But it does seem like "Big Brother" is dictating quite alot with this new programming. Why bother even offering age restrictions if they've become meaningless.
I'm happy that he's trying to clean up the site. When I set my profile to looking for "friends" and clearly stated I was NOT looking for a hook-up of any kind, I received so many "pervy" messages that I finally gave up and hid my profile from viewing. So I can see that there is definatly a problem here.
I sincerely hope that getting rid of people who are forum users only is not part of the "clean-up" plan. I understand that this is supposed to be a dating site. But our forums beat any others that I have seen. We have a number of very intelligent posters here. I would really miss this place.

Almost alcoholic and in denial
Posted: 5/17/2013 4:51:44 AM
I'd go to about a dozen Alanon meetings and take it from there.
I've been to an Alanon meeting. Basically, they teach you how to stop enabling the alcoholic. They helped me understand that there was really nothing I could do to help or change him. That convinced me that it was time for me to go. (Leave the relationship.)

Being Stood Up Over and Over Again
Posted: 5/12/2013 6:19:05 AM
I don't think the OP really meant "stood up"...as in, she went to the meeting place even though they failed to confirm.
Obviously, I'm just guessing that she was referring to the disappearing act they each pulled by failing to confirm the meeting.
When I was dating, I encountered a number of men who did the same thing. Just further evidence of how "flaky" online daters can be. Many people are more comfortable with simply disappearing, then dealing more directly with disappointing someone.
My advice would be something like, when they make the plans, ask them to confirm the day before and don't put much faith in it, until you receive that confirmation.

Kermit Gosnell alledged murderer.

What kind of person could jam a pair of scissors into a child born alive? Not once. But many, many times.
This "doctor" obviously had no concerns about whether or not abortion is legal. He was waaaaay beyond the scope of legal abortion. He certainly didn't view these poor souls as "children".
I'm sure most people would agree that the issue of abortions in general is quite distasteful. And this case. It's horrific.

And that has diddly sh1t to do with my post or this thread.

I do not not know specifially what Iran has done that has made them the #1 enemy

Gee, I don't know... perhaps it had something to do with the 1979 seizure of our embassy and then holding 52 Americans hostage for over a year.

copying accents

5 of your 6 reasons express that people are doing it consciously and deliberately.
I believe most people do it unconsciously. At least that is true for me. When I moved to the south, I picked up the accent right away. It most definately was not deliberate. My guess as to why, would be an unconscious response for the purpose of fitting in.
I've heard my accent described as some weird combination of southern and mid-western with a touch of British thrown in. I don't have a clue where the latter part came from.

Steubenville rape case
Posted: 4/3/2013 5:21:21 PM
If she hadn't been at the party and hadn't been passed out drunk she would not have been raped. Just sayin.
Well, let's just say...hypothetically...that your 16 year old granddaughter goes to a party with some friends. She drinks a little too much and sadly, she passes out. She is subsequently fondled, sodomized, etc. Would you then tell her that? Just sayin.
Unbelievable.

What Would Compell You To Marry After Age 45?
Posted: 3/29/2013 11:48:31 AM
Another case where women claim to make all of the sacrifices and are the only victims in a marriage gone wrong
You must have reading comprehension issues.
I never claimed to be the "only victim in a marriage gone wrong". In fact, I said nothing about the circumstances under which I "gave too much for too long". I wasn't even talking about a marriage or a romantic relationship. I was talking about my life. And I took full responsibility for my decisions.
You made quite a few assumptions from my simple statement.

I saw a naked 50 yr old woman once and that was enuff told her to get dressed we are done.
What a nasty little man you are. You couldn't tell before you decided to get naked with her, that she was "soft and saggy"? So you never touched her while she still had her clothes on? WTF is wrong with you? Misogyny at it's finest.
No f-ing way will I ever get married again. I'm way too tired to compromise. My mistake was giving way too much for way too long. And it was MY mistake.

What is the Best Thing U Learned Now, Being Older in People???
Posted: 3/22/2013 5:02:28 AM
- Actions speak louder than words....talk is cheap.
- People don't change. They can try to modify their behaviour...but they will essentially remain the same type of personality.
- The only person you can truly count on, is yourself. (And sometimes that is also questionable!)
- If you can't be happy with and by yourself, you won't find it anywhere else either.

a good smack in the face
A smack in the face? Really? I know this thread isn't about the manner in which parents choose to discipline their kids...rather the lack of said discipline...but "smack in the face?"
An appropriate punishment for teens or pre-teens would probably be more along the lines of taking away something that is meaningful to them, rather than committing physical violence against them.
I haven't watched the video, but this really sounds like some "stupid kid crap" to me. The kind of thing most kids would only do when goaded by their peers.

Too old.
Posted: 3/2/2013 7:15:04 AM
I am 25 and he is 44. I honestly think that is a little bit too old. especially since he's my mothers age.
Your profile says you are 29 not 25. So that would make him 15 years older than you, not 19. That is the difference between "old enough to be your Dad" and not. That's not particularly fair to the men viewing your profile. Especially since that 4 year difference is seemingly important to you.
Since you stated that you won't date him because he is too old, you obviously have a limit in the ages of men you are willing to date. Given that information, you should set an age limit on who can contact you. By not setting a limit, you are essentially implying that you are open to all ages.
His statement "how are we not a match when u dont know me" is a telling sign of how future communications with him will go. I wholeheartedly agree with the other posters who said to block him. He is already responding in an argumentative fashion. You'll get nothing but trouble if you reply again.

Too old.

I think most people do not want to date someone who is almost 20 years older then themselves. That's definately in the "old enough to be my parent" mindset.
There are many who don't care about age, but I believe most people prefer someone a little closer in age.
I think you should set an age limit on your profile. You're a very pretty young lady who will probably hear from many older men.

Congratulations! That is the very best gift you could give yourself. I quit at age 45. It's absolutely wonderful to be able to breathe deeply without coughing. The metabolism does slow down a bit after menopause, so the sooner you can reach your goals, the better off you will be.

Happy Birthday, Maya!
My 40's were the absolute best. I was fit, active and quite content. My 50's haven't been so kind. I'm not so much insecure about my age. I'm just finding it extremely difficult to get back into my desired "shape".

Your join date is 1/28. That's only 2 weeks ago! It takes time to meet someone compatible. I've been here for about 7 years. I've met more than a few interesting people over the years. Had one relationship on and off for about 4 years. My profile was hidden when dating exclusively.
I had to go on a great many "meets" before finding someone I wanted to spend time with. Hang in there. I think your pics are very nice and positive.

You've got to be joking. What IS the big effing deal? I've seen numerous complaints about the recent emails from Markus. Are POF users so sensitive and desperate, that finding out your mail is from Admin just ruins your day?
Please remember. This is HIS domain. He can do whatever he damn well pleases. Most of us are free "guests".
I fail to see the logic behind your statement that his messages regarding new features and contests are "unfriendly".

Freedom of speech and expression
Posted: 1/31/2013 3:08:34 PM
particularly American people as they seem to react particularly sensitive to stuff other people say
That's a very interesting point. And I tend to agree with you.
It's a close call as to whether there are more Americans or more Canadians on this site. Regardless of POF's origins, the US has almost 10 times as many people than Canada. My point is...if there are simply many more Americans posting that any other nationality, it would stand to reason that they seem to be whining more. I honestly don't know. I'm just pointing out a possibility.
Canada, Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Australia all have laws against hate speech. The US has the 1st amendment that specifically prohibits hate speech laws. Do you sense a trend in what countries the most critical posters are from? Do people from countries with free speech limitations express themselves more freely and perhaps more aggresively in an anonymous, global forum? Or are Americans more critical since we are accustomed to saying whatever we like without fear of legal prosecution. The only limitations on us are societal ones, and clearly that doesn't dissuade much. Especially when speaking anonymously.
This article is from 2008. But it's still interesting.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/11/world/americas/11iht-hate.4.13645369.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
Americans as a whole are more tough-minded and more prepared for verbal combat
I guess the author doesn't agree with us. (Or he doesn't post here!)

Freedom of speech and expression
Posted: 11/28/2012 2:39:02 PM
This is the primary reason I stopped posting in these forums. There is very little respectful dialogue here. People seem to take great joy in being as sarcastic, nasty and offensive as they think they can get away with. I think some posters are basically using the forums to vent their frustrations.
The forums were supposed to be a source of information and constructive dialogue. I don't even enjoy reading them anymore. If this is truly a representation of people and the manner in which they express their views, then the world is in serious trouble.
I'm not suggesting that freedom of speech be curbed. I'm bemoaning the lack of self control and the complete absence of even a shred of consideration and respect for an alternate opinion by many posters.
People should have the right to voice their opinions yet common courtesy should be projected. Using common courtesy actually gets your point across more effectively and can actually produce good results such as the opponent seeing your opinion as valid.
This is what I'm trying to say as well. I have learned many things about the world from some of the posters here that still actually employ common courtesy. I tend to skip over any posts that reek of sarcastic, snotty, thinly veiled insults and name-calling. I don't come here to be angered by ignorant rants. I come here seeking constructive dialogue and alternate viewpoints on current events.
I would love to see the mods drop the hammer on some of this nonsense.

Raise taxes on the wealthiest-- even Kristol gets it

Thanks, Irish. I'm just totally confused by this. Based on my payroll system tax tables I expect to be paying around 12% this year. So 25% pretty much blew my mind.
I guess I just don't understand how to interpret this information.

Table 3. 2013 Taxable Income Brackets and Rates Under President Obama’s 2013 Budget
25% for the range of $36,250 to $87,850???
Holy crap. That's a difference of over $50k in that range. How the he11 can I afford to pay 25% of $ 36,250 and still be able to support myself AND pay for my now mandatory health insurance??? I sure hope he takes another look at those brackets. That's ridiculous.
I'll tell you what...someone making almost $400k can afford to pay 39.6% alot MORE than someone making about $35k can afford to pay 25%. That range is outrageous and will definately put me in poverty. Talk about sticking it to the middle class.

How Bad is it for Republicans?
Posted: 11/4/2012 1:05:12 PM
There are far more people interested in watching Survivor, or Ameircan Idol, than sitting for an hour and reading the entire ballot.
Exactly. And those very same people aren't standing in a voting booth studying the ballot either. They just walk in and start checking off boxes. The are not going to invest time in trying to understand the amendments. Not at home and not in the voting booth.
Oh...and for the record, the ballot is 4 pages long with 11 amendments.

But NO, the republican governor...in an effort to disenfranchise those that would vote for Obama..he piled all this shit together, and DIDN'T extend the hours...
The sample ballots were mailed out several weeks ago. We have had PLENTY of time to read them and seek advice and understanding of the amendments. The ballot itself says right on it in capital letters "FILL THIS OUT AND TAKE IT WITH YOU WHEN YOU VOTE". We have early voting and absentee voting. And I don't believe the governor is charge of deciding what goes on the ballot.
Adsentee voting was as simple as making a phone call and spending $ 1.25 to mail it in.
Early voting was available for a full week (including Saturday and Sunday.)

BUT the ballot is 10 PAGES LONG!!! With amendments, and votes for various offices, and other items
In the state of Florida, our constitution can only be amended by popular vote. Our ballots are ALWAYS 10 pages long. The amendments are ridiculously wordy and complex. Inevitably, they will add one sentance at the very end of the amendment that changes the entire scope of it.
READING all the garbage on the ballot is taking some people 20 minutes!
20 minutes?? You must be joking. It took a whole lot longer than that to actually read and comprehend the amendments.

Professional help will be invaluable for your son. Children grieve much differently than adults do. They can help you understand his behaviour and how best to help him.
I went through this process with my nieces when my sister died. Hospice counseling really helped me understand their seemingly aberrant reaction.

I definitely did not expect this much backlash. I'm starting to think most of these people are forum lurkers with a vendetta against the people who have success with the main site.
lol. You ARE new to the forums then. There are a lot of very bored, confrontational aholes around here. God forbid you should have a different perspective on a subject. I understand exactly how you feel. You stated your position clearly and succinctly.
"Hot" basically means "i don't care about your personality, but you are ****able", so it felt really degrading for someone to ignore my question and say that.
Bingo. In this context, whereby you are attempting to have an intelligent conversation with a supposedly well-educated woman, it's reasonable to expect a little more effort. I seriously doubt that is her education level. If it is...than that is just pathetic.
I'm sure if you pressed her for an answer to the question you posed regarding what subject her graduate degree was in, she would simply say she was just joking and probably has a high school education at best. That's probably why she tried to deflect the conversation.

IMO Sex complicates feeling free to be yourself during the getting to know you stage as it tends to put more expectations on the realtionship.
My thought was more along the lines of:
For some people, great sex creates "blinders" aka "rose colored glasses". That makes it much harder to really get to know the other person. It isn't until the glasses come off, that you see the real person.

Posted: 8/18/2012 11:55:00 AM
When a woman says she wouldn't mind having a glass of wine once in awhile but wants nothing serious, does that ever mean friends with benefits? Is there a classy way for a guy to ask if that's an option?
It could mean FWB, then again...
There is nothing wrong with asking her if she sees you as a platonic friend only.

Can I buy you a drink?
Posted: 8/14/2012 12:48:01 PM
This is another one of those issues where it's not hard to see both sides.
Personally, I would not accept a drink under the circumstances described, unless the man looked interesting to me and I was willing to at least have a conversation with him. However, I've been in more than one bar with a woman friend, where drinks were sent to our table with no request for conversation or contact. It may seem strange...but it has happened more than once. The response was a wave and a thank you. That doesn't mean we would have run them off for coming up to the table and talking to us.
But... for the man to offer a drink with expectations is simply foolish. He should have asked her if she would join him for a drink.

I agree that Walt Wawra would be a scary idiot... if he even exists. And I find it really hard to believe that this man is a police officer. You would think they would be especially good at determining what constitutes a threat. That fact alone, casts serious doubt on this letter. I'm pretty sure anyone from anywhere could have written this letter and the newpaper wouldn't hesitate to print it. We are all quite aware of how Canadians feel about our gun laws.
Personally, I find this rather unbelievable. But, carry on...you folks need more reasons to denigrate us.
it should be fairly obvious that what is truly unique and freakish is the prevailing American attitude towards other people. Other nations even. Other religions. Everyone is a threat. Everyone else has a gun so you'd better have one too.
When you make sweeping generalizations like this one, it just further convinces me that none of us should even bother responding to you. You have already decided how we ALL think and feel. I'm not wasting any more of my time trying to dispel your prejudice.

Of course, not ALL Americans are like this "one dumb-azz", I've already pointed out two... but, if it isn't a majority (the "self-defence" gun clingers would tell you they are the majority), it certainly is a significant percentage and you can't honestly deny that...
That is absolutely ridiculous. You are actually stating that a significant percentage of "gun clingers" are completely incapable of making a distinction about what constitutes a real "threat". If what you said is true, there would be one he11 of alot more gun deaths than 8,775. Your statement could be accurate without the exaggeration. More like "some" or "a few".

Men's attitudes to women's work
Posted: 8/7/2012 12:36:04 PM
Can anyone relate to what I'm saying here?
Yes I can. I avoided dating retirees because of that fact. They were looking for someone who was free to take off during the day or week to travel and engage in other activities. I can't get away from my work that easily. I found that it just wasn't a good match for me.
I would imagine that many men around our age range are fortunate enough to be retired. The dating pool just keeps getting smaller...

HOW DO I REPORT PEOPLE SENDING RACIST MESSAGES TO ME?
Posted: 8/7/2012 10:06:24 AM
If you READ my profile you would see it says I PREFER black men but I will give anybody of any race a chance if we click.
While that statement is true, your headline screams in all CAPITAL letters "BLACK GUYS ONLY PLEASE". Since you used all caps in this thread title, perhaps you are not aware that it is considered yelling/screaming when used in this mode of communication.
The fact that you chose all caps is sending a very STRONG message. Obviously you are entitled to your preferences. It's a shame that so many men are offended by your choice of delivery.
But if you really just PREFER black men rather than require that...I would suggest you change your heading. Perhaps if you toned it down just a bit it may cut down on the hate mail.
I believe the proper way to report someone is by clicking the Report User button on their profile. Be sure to save the email and block them from further contact.

Excerpted from the link you provided:
Also excerpted from the link I provided:
Her personal feelings were just that: personal. Not right or wrong — simply Sally. Everyone who knows her well really got that about her."
Bear, a gay Presbyterian minister, takes a different approach.
"I'm a rather out-there advocate for LGBT [lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender] rights — my partner and I have even been arrested a couple of times in public protest!" she told me. "But that's me, and not Sally."
I'm not anti-gay. When a close family member chose a bi-sexual relationship, no one was more supportive than me. But I would hope that Bear does not forget nor overlook her sister's feelings about privacy.

To me, it sounds as though you are ashamed for her private life, and you are projecting that on her memory by exhorting everyone to politely ignore the "distasteful facts" out of your own sense of decorum.
fly...you are doing a great deal of projecting. (Inappropriately, I might add.) You have absolutely NO basis for your statements regarding my views. In fact, you don't have a fvcking clue what my view on homosexuality is. My opinion is no more or no less than what I stated. I think she is and will be exploited by other people. The cited article below clearly states repeatedly how much she valued her privacy. Just because she acknowledged her lover in her obituary does NOT mean she is now choosing to be an advocate for anything more than the science programs she valued so dearly. There was not even a HINT of shame in anything I've posted. Take my words at face value and stop playing games.

There is a difference between acknowledging it and exploiting it.
Wouldn't you agree?

Sally Ride, American Hero: This Is What a Lesbian Looks Like
Based on the fact that she specifically chose to keep her sexual preference private, I really don't think she would appreciate this.
If she wanted to be a symbol for the gay movement, she would have done so. I think she is being exploited and it dishonors her memory to use her in this way.
She cared a great deal about science and giving young people opportunities for exposure to it. That's the kind of publicity she would appreciate.

can non-pot smokers handle pot smokers?
Posted: 7/24/2012 12:33:30 PM
Wow, does this actually happen in the States ????
Unfortunately, it does. I have a couple of friends who were smoking at their kitchen table. The cops caught a glimpse of them through a screen door from the street. They were arrested and charged with possession. The case ended up getting dismissed. (I believe due to illegal search & seizure.)

Text Message Etiquette

Personally, when I'm driving on the interstate I don't text OR talk on my cell phone. When it's bumper to bumper traffic going 80 MPH, I'm concentrating on my driving.
OP... NJ is stressing you out! Relax. Down here in the south...we take things easy. (It's too hot to do anything else.)
