Noticed my name popping up earlier in the thread, so I thought I'd say hello, lol. I still lurk round here every now and then, but can never be bothered contributing any more.
I'm probably going to have to skip this one, thanks to being terminally skint thanks to the heavy hands of HM Revenue and Customs

I actually toyed with the idea of putting "Athletic" as my body type, as despite the fact I'm a fat bar steward, Rugby Union forwards and Amercian Football linesmen are still "Athletes", and on recent evidence I'm thinner than a lot of them. It's all subjective.

Drug advice needed.
Posted:
3/14/2007 3:21:43 PM
Bit of a radical idea this, but sometimes things like this need radical solutions.
Buy some seeds/plants and help the lad grow his own gear.
This will work on several levels:
1- no money needs to be spent on buying drugs anymore. If things keep on getting sold, then you know that he's doing more than a bit of weed, so can seek the appropriate help.
2 - he learns how to look after growing plants to get the best harvest out of them. Transferable skills that could be put to use in the labour market.
3 - he's got your approval to smoke dope, which if he's trying to rebel really takes the "thrill" out of it. If he's like any other teenager, the worst thing that could happen to him is being told that something he does is "cool" by one of his parents.

I have no issue with my height, it's my width that I have a problem with. There's nothing more embarrasing than getting stuck in the turnstiles of a soccer/rugby stadium when you're trying to go and see a match. Easter Road seems to be particularly bad, I have to get them to open the disabled gate for me whenever I go there

But why do some balding men, do the comb over thing.
They look complete and utter twats.
The latest craze in baldness hiding, especially amongst the "metrosexual" fraternity seems to be the "comb forward". It looks even siller than a comb over IMO.

POF, Privacy, and Google.
Posted:
3/7/2007 3:17:09 PM
I'm not wanting to disturb a hornet's nest here, but the last half hour has thrown up some serious concerns about the privacy of POF and other dating sites.
I was bored, and thought I'd Google my username for a laugh, just to see if anything for me appeared in the results. I was quite shocked to find that two of the results on the first page were links to my profile and to a list of all of my forum posts on here. Being a bit of a nerd, I had to extend the experiment using some of my favourites, to reduce the margin of error in the results, and in 5 out of the six usernames I searched on, there were links to POF on the first page, as well as a couple of links to L00py Love.
Not good, especially if you're married and looking for a bit of fluff. Might be a good idea to delete your profile if you fall into that category

Oh gosh - My job is relocating to Gibraltar - what to do!!!
Posted:
3/2/2007 4:01:51 PM
Woa
Our team got called into a meeting this afternoon, to be told that we would be relocating to Gibraltar by September this year due to regulatory and financial reasons.
Now I don't want to discuss the company on line, but it is just our team of 10 going, the whole of the rest of the (almost) FTSE100 company are staying behind.
Not only that, but I have also applied for a promotion to one of the jobs that is currently not filled but is going to be in Gibraltar.
I really get on with the team, but now have a few weeks to decide what the heck to do. I could be found another job within the company, but one I may not be qualified fully to do.
Or I could look for work within the UK.
I have no idea yet what the reloction package will be.
Has anyone lived in that neck of the woods?
And what does it mean for me still being single. Either no one will date me now as I will be a flash in the pan, or maybe someone may think yeah - quite fancy a couple of years in Spain and Si's a bit of alright! Who knows????
All back to mine for a Spanish meet anyone?
But in all seriousness, no idea what to do right now. Some of the team have partners and two have just bought houses, so I guess me renting on my tod is not really much of an issue.
Si
Think yourself lucky Dude, my job's being relocated to Hemel Hempstead sometime over the next year. Right next door to an exploding petrol storage facility. Oh Joy!

Any sugar free sweets that have sorbitol in them are really good if you want to have guff fun in your office of an afternoon. Just don't have too many of them, as they liquidise everything in your digestive tract, and could lead to a nast accident.

Did anyone ever use a C.B. Radio in the 80's?
Posted:
2/27/2007 3:51:46 PM
Any blokes from the eastern side of West Lothian that used CB in the 80's probably "knew" my cousin Snow White. She used CB as a way to get herself a council house, and she wasn't too fussed about who gave her the key, so to speak.
I had a two channel Amstrad handheld for a couple of years, but the range on it didn't really go past the boundaries of my village, so there really wasn't much point to it. Most of the people I could speak to, I saw everyday at school, and they all had the same "rig", so you couldn't have a private conversation as they were all using channel 30 as well.
I knew all the lingo, but I can't for the life of me remember what my handle was.

The reason there's no age of consent for lesbian sex is because when Homosexuality was made illegal in the 18xx's, Lesbianism was excluded, as Queen Victoria refused to believe that women would want to get intimate with each other. As the act didn't exist on the statute books, there was never any need to impose an age of consent

I've had mine just over a week now, and I love it!!!! I ached SO much for the first couple of days from the boxing, but I've gotten used to it now, and thanks to doing at least 9 rounds a day, my biceps have started growing.
The kids were totally over the moon when they came round last weekend and saw the little white box sat under the telly, and they pretty much played it solidly. It was well worth the £180 just for the fact I didn't have to sit through a single episode of Spongebob Squarepants for the whole weekend!

Tigger,
Buy a big bag of Seed mix from a health food shop (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and linseed is a good mix), and you can munch on them throughout the day. Fills you up, gives you loads of energy and vitamins and they help "clean out your system" thanks to containing lots of fibre.

I'm just watching the Hudds v Saints match on Sky in glorious High Definition. The picture is so sharp you can almost read the betting slip in Sean Long's back pocket. My weekends are complete again
The off season is only 2 and a half months, but it feels SOOOOOO long!
I don't know how anyone can say league is stop-start, you never stop moving for the whole 80 minutes, you don't even get a rest at the scrum if you're a forward! None of this kicking to touch every couple of minutes, stopping to form the line-out, stopping every other ruck because someone's caused a penalty, and taking 10 attempts to form a scrum properly.

A German poem from the 1940's, which, whilst being about the Nazi government in Germany, could equally apply to our current spineless government's fixation with trying to pander to the loudest minority voices:
They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Stop and search - advice
Posted:
1/30/2007 8:51:34 AM
To the OP: To be honest, I don't think there's anything to complain about, in fact the police should be praised for their vigilance. They walked into the pub at 9.00pm and came back out at 9.05pm, which was clearly not enough time to get a drink in. The pub was being watched, so it's entirely possible that it's got a reputation as somewhere that dealers hang out, and 5 minutes is just about the right time to score a deal.
You say that your son looks nothing like a druggie, well, that's another reason that the cops probably searched him, the studenty casual drugs user is a hell of a lot easier to crack during an interview than a hardcore user, which would have made finding the dealer a much easier task.
Are you more offended by the fact that your lad was searched, or that the police thought he was a druggie?

The bloke's more than likely to end up hanging from a tree anyway, as he was daft enough to to go on telly saying how lucky he was not to get sent to jail. It shouldn't be too hard for all the Daily Mail and Sun readers in the area to track him down.
I still stand by what I said though, in that sending him to jail would have probably turned him into an abuser. Prison is no way to rehabilitate anyone. You just have to look at how many people re-offend, with better skills after they've been inside.

Technically, the bloke wasn't actually a peado. He'd never abused any children, but he was up before the beak for downloading "indecent images of children". I don't in any way condone what he did, but I do actually think that not sending him to jail was the best option. Had he been given a custodial sentance, he'd have had to serve it on the "beast wing", which would have more than likely introduced him to far more active nonces than him. He'd have picked up contacts, gained trust with members of peadophile rings, and probablay would have gone onto abuse after he'd served the required 2 months of his 6 month sentance. As it stands at the moment, he's on the sex offenders register for the next 10 years, can't use the internet, isn't allowed near children, and has probably learnt his lesson.

Gouranga - does anyone know what this means?
Posted:
1/19/2007 4:12:00 PM
Years ago the name Gouranga appeared on motorway bridges in the North of England and on various stickers, causing people to wonder what it was all about. It has been rumoured that the Scottish branch of ISKCON has been trying to spread the name of their spiritual ancestor through a guerilla-type campaign. We have no idea if there is any substance to these rumours. It's equally plausible that this is just somebody's sense of humour. Hare Krishna-related jokes in popular culture are not uncommon, such in the movie "Airplane" or the "Gouranga" references in the Playstation videogame "Grand Theft Auto".
The Gouranga thing has been around in Edinburgh since the mid to late 80's. There were stickers, posters and grafitti all over the place. There was a point where every lampost on Easter Road had at least one Gouranga sticker on it, and every boarded-up shop had a poster stuck on it.
Early saturday mornings used to provide some great entertainment when the Krishnas, Evangelical Christians and Scientologists used to fight (sometimes physically) for the best spot on The Mound.

Money saving hints and tips
Posted:
1/14/2007 3:43:47 AM
Now that my eldest son is leaving home to go off to university, I have discovered that I will be losing about £300 a month in various benefits.
So other than selling the house and moving back in with my mother, does anybody have money saving suggestions?
Although you're physically losing £300 a month, chances are that it'll not really make that much of a difference. You've already said you're saving money on your Council Tax, but there are other automatic savings as well.
You're not feeding an 18 year-old lad anymore, and he's not using your electricity for his pc/telly/stereo/games console, so that probably works out to be at least £200.
And of course you don't have the stress of worrying whether he'll come back home of a saturday night or not anymore

It was pretty rubbish, TBH. There were only about 3 decent rides, and it's current owners had let if fall into a pretty poor state of repair. I think the last time that any new rides had been added was about 9 years ago, probably longer.
It did have the best log flume in the UK though, hopefully some other theme park will buy that and move it on.
