How can you possibly hold someone rsponsible - parents - when you dont allow them any form of discipline and provide support for the children to disobey and leave home? sheesh

I agree with sexyashell as long as you make it clear there is a package and whole family involved - there are many men and women who cant have their own children that would be only too happy and willing to adopt a whole family - and usually they are worth seeking out and waiting for.

We in adelaide are on level 4 restrictions and would rather see the water than the cotton, we cant eat or drink cotton, so perhaps they should be r-evaluating needs rather than profits.
The Murray River at the South Australian end barely flows at all these day after all the eatsern states have sucked all the goodness from the river, its becoming more of a stagnant pond, and the salininty levels are increasing rapidy.
I wonder how many politicians are in the pay of the big multi-nationals, either directly or maybe jobs after they lose their political seats and have to live on the meagre pensions?

Dico - the posts I made were far from jokes, I have friends on the land and they have successfully 'managed' their farms for many many years and in terrible drought and flood conditions. They are versatile and usually take great note of scientific kowledge and research in agriculture - Aust exports its knowledge and techniques for arid and low rainfall agriculture.
GG made a very important comment in that we should restrict or eliminate those crops that are NOT viable in our dry climate - ie rice and cotton, and concentrate on those food crops that we can successfully grow for domestic and export markets.
A great many of the farms that are becoming (hopefully temporarily) unviable are owned and managed by families that have done so successfully for generations, can we afford to lose their expertise and hope to recover it when the rains do come?

Yeah - make all the farms - STATE FARMS. we could get advice from the old soviet union and when its a drought season they can grow cannabis or poppies, or maybe join the dole queues in the country towns.
I agree with the government assisting but in a much more proactive and long lasting way, better use of the CSIRO on agriculture matters, better long term financial assistance NOT controlled by bank interests ,maybe.
I'm not an expert but maybe the governments should make better use of the experts ans less notice of the banks and multinationals that own some of the major water usage farms etc - re: cotton

Why make the father responsible, it takes two to make a baby - at least that's what I thought.
And as to your comment re: ferals - that is uncalled for and downright stupid and insulting to any intelligent human being. That what the nazis also suggested!

Curfews for Children
Posted:

I noticed on a news bulletin recently (and more than a few times over the past few years) the subject has arisen re: out of control children and youth.
Due to the fact that gangs of children, some as young as 7 (it was stated), were roaming the streets unsupervised at night causing mischeif and breaking the law, ie vandalism, fightings, theft etc etc etc.
Again a proposal has been mooted, and even adopted in some communities, to place a curfew on children under a certain age, ie they MUST NOT be out unaccompanied by an adult after a certain hour - 10.00 or 11.00 pm. Any child caught out unaccompanied after the curfew was escorted home to the parents, subsequent or repeated offences may (it was suggested) result in the parents being charged.
The parents have been / are being held responsible for the actions of the children. Whilst this may be a logical assumption on face value, one should also take into account the fact that the governments (Federal and State) have over the years taken away the rights of parents to discipline their children. Parents are NOT permitted to;
* smack, slap or in any way physically discipline a child, thats child abuse and / or assault.
* yell or verbally assault a child, thats child abuse.
* physically restrain a child from going out, thats child abuse and /or assault and /or illegal detention.
* withhold food, lodging or any other necessity, child abuse.
The governments (Federal and State) have also promoted the fact that children have rights and if they run away to become street kids, they are paid by the Fed government (Centrelink) to stay away from home AND the Government refutes the parents right to even know where the child is living or any other information pertaining to the child.
Anyone else see an incongruity to the alleged treatment of the problem of undisciplined and / or uncontrollable children roaming the streets???
It should be noted in the interests of completeness, this is NOT applicable to all suburbs, towns etc, only those with the problem, and guess what?, the majority (if not all) of the problems are in the low socio-economic areas.

shellsbells,
I also am soloing it this nye, but hey we get used to it I guess. Perhaps if I lived closer I would be only too happy to keep you company.
What I cant understand is attractive women actually being alone on NYE etc, even with children, surely there are men mature enough to accept single mothers as good company and / or prospective partners - sheesh!
p.s. before anyone jumps in, I also apply the same to those single fathers out there.
Have a great evening with your son and I hope the New Year brings you health, happiness and properity.

Jelly - as I said, try the Aust high Commission on the "jobs wish list" - they would have all the relavent info for you.
We are not that diferent to other developed countries, re: crime rate etc - some places are worse than others but I would hope not nearly as bad as parts of the US etc. We do have strict gun laws and that reduces the level of that sort of crime I think.
I would also like to think that racism isnt as bad here as someplaces, we are not all angels though, and that ex-pat site may be good, but not if its just a lot of "whinging poms" hahahaha - just kidding. but if its so bad here, why are they staying?
There are lots of ex-pats clubs etc here, so acclimatising and assimilating may be difficult at first but not insurmountable, especially if you do get here with a 'wish list' job to start at staight away.
Come for a holiday or working holiday first, then decide for yourself.

And I have actually sent as gifts, recipe books for kangaroo etc - hahahahahahaha

Tasmania - I adore the whole of the island, I have holidayed there on about 5 or 6 occassions and cant get enough of the place, the climate, the people, the landscape - to me its a great place to escape.
Apart from that - Australia - I have lived most capital cities and travelled extensively all over and there is just so much to see, by the time you start at one point and travel around, by the time you get back to the start its all changed and you have to do it again.
LIFE is BEAUTIFUL - enjoy

Check the health care aspects and your other concerns with the Aust High Commission and get the facts before you make a decision.
Also you wont be alone - there are miriads of english ex-pats living out here in similar circumstances that made the break. And if your son prefers the english weather, there is no hope for him anyways - lol

How good are these australians, if a few dont make the grade the others lower down always stand up to be counted - bust as for Warne getting man of the match - THAT was bull****
The 156 century of Symons and the partnership with hayden (279) far outweighed the Warne contribution - IN MY OPINION

Working my way through Leon Uris' books - sheesh can he put a story together, fiction based on fact? but very heavy reading and depressing in its description of the depravity of man against man, during WWII and the Irish conflict
Just finished working through Isaac Asimov - now there is mind! I wonder hoe many of his science fictions may come to pass in the future? akin to Jules Verne's science fictions, now facts of history.

Action & Reaction - Newton's 3rd Law - lol very good GG
I agree that even a single person can make a diference IF they use their power at the elections - so many people appear to cast an informal vote (sic) thinking this is a protest but in reality it is copping out from having your say. These same people then have the temerity to complain about what the government is doing - how misinformed they really are - sigh, what a waste.
And 'pinky', thats all news to me, I thought it strange that we dont hear protest songs like we used to in the days of the vietname war. I thought it was just over-commercialisation of the music industry and greed.
Where is todays 'Midnight Oil' and / or 'Redgum' ?

My daughter last year gave me a handmade booklet / album of photo's of her and her sister - starting from one end is her from birth to date and from the other end was her sister, from birth to date and where they met in the middle were pics of them both together at various ages - until then I had very few pics of the girls from their birth etc, the ex has always found excuses NOT to sort all the photos out so that I had copies etc. thats exes for you I suppose. The gift brought tears to my eyes.
And this year, photo's of my grandson's first Santa pics - and I couldnt be happier.
Guess what - the total cost for the gifts was $nil but the joy it gave me is $Priceless

Boxing Day!!
Posted:
12/26/2006 1:21:02 AM
From Wikipedia
"[edit] Origins
There are disparate theories as to the origins of the term. The more common stories include:
It was the day when people would give a present or Christmas 'box' to those who have worked for them throughout the year. This is still done in Britain for postmen and paper-boys - though now the 'box' is usually given before Christmas, not after.
In feudal times, Christmas was a reason for a gathering of extended families. All the serfs would gather their families in the manor of their lord, which made it easier for the lord of the estate to hand out annual stipends to the serfs. After all the Christmas parties on 26 December, the lord of the estate would give practical goods such as cloth, grains, and tools to the serfs who lived on his land. Each family would get a box full of such goods the day after Christmas. Under this explanation, there was nothing voluntary about this transaction; the lord of the manor was obliged to supply these goods. Because of the boxes being given out, the day was called Boxing Day.
In Britain many years ago, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name Boxing Day.
In churches, it was traditional to open the church's donation box on Christmas Day, and the money in the donation box was to be distributed to the poorer or lower class citizens on the next day. In this case, the "box" in "Boxing Day" comes from that one gigantic lockbox in which the donations were left.
Boxing Day was the day when the wren, the king of birds,[3] was captured and put in a box and introduced to each household in the village when he would be asked for a successful year and a good harvest. See Frazer's Golden Bough.
Evidence can also be found in Wassail songs such as:
Where are you going ? said Milder to Malder,
Oh where are you going ? said Fessel to Foe,
I'm going to hunt the cutty wren said Milder to Malder,
I'm going to hunt the cutty wren said John the Rednose.
And what will you do wi' it ? said Milder to Malder,
And what will you do wi' it ? said Fessel to Foe,
I'll put it in a box said Milder to Malder,
I'll put it in a box said John the Rednose.
etc.
Because the staff had to work on such an important day as Christmas Day by serving the master of the house and their family, they were given the following day off. Since being kept away from their own families to work on a traditional religious holiday and not being able to celebrate Christmas Dinner, the customary benefit was to "box" up the leftover food from Christmas Day and send it away with the servants and their families. Hence the "boxing" of food became "Boxing Day".
I didnt know that, thanks for tweeking my interest GG

wish every one a marry xmas and a safe new year

I wanted to send some sort of "holiday" greeting but it is so difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So upon advice from lawyers, I wish to offer the following:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter soltice holiday period, practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.
I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2007, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that Australia is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.
By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:
This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal.
It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting.
It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.
This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

Witty, you will love Adelaide, it may not be the metroplolises of Sydney or Melbourne, its more like a very big country town. The people are friendly and layed back, you dont have to drive hours to get anywhere in the city. The wine growing areas are only about 1 hour out from the city and there are even wineries in a few of the outer suburbs. The beaches are clean and safe (except for the occassional shark) and we DONT have stinging jellyfish, sea wasps, blue bottles, poisonous octupii or crocodiles.
I am originally from Sydney and fell in love with Adelaide some 30+ years ago and have lived here ever since.
I hope you have a great holiday

She should sue the pram manufacturer - she would if it was America - the pram should NOT have been able to roll, the brakes should automatically come on to protect babies from parents who have to answer phones, scatch a***s etc while jogging on a sloping river bank.
Shame on the manufacturer for making such unsafe products.

BREAKING NEWS
It has been stated in a leaked memo from the office of the Minister for Immigration that, if a certain overweight scandinavian driving a red sleigh with reindeer as locomotion, attempts to circumvent Australia's immigration laws, he will be met with the full force of her department. The minister has just become aware that this occurs every year (where has she been living all this time?) and poses a serious threat to Australia's immigration laws and policies.
She has also called upon her colleagues, the Treasurer (in his capacity as minister in charge of Customs & Excise) and the Minister of Defence to provide the full backing and assistance of their departments to thwart this 'Santa Clause' criminal.
Who knows what things 'Clause' may be carrying into the country in his vehicle, trying to get around the customs and quarrantine inspections designed to protect Australia from overseas diseases and possibly even WMD's disguised as Toys etc. as well as all those foreign imports that have dodged the Australian Tax and Import duties. To make matters even worse, said toys etc may even lead to the loss of Australian jobs.
TO ASSIST THE MINISTER TO PROTECT US FROM THIS INSIDIOUS NOCTURNAL INVADER AND CRIMINAL - PLEASE REPORT ANY SIGHTINGS OR INFORMATION TO THE OFFICE OF THE MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION - CANBERRA
It has often been said that politicians live in another world far from reality, is this finaly the proof?

Roses, I think its not a matter of creeping up but rather actually seeing what may have been there the whole time - sort of like "not being able to see the trees because of the forest" i think that sometimes we come to realise what we are looking for was right in front of us the whole time.

yeah - the UN did a wonderful job protecting the innocents in the Yugoslavian disintegration, oh their achievements in Africa also should be applauded (not), and we mustn't forget the protection offerred the Afghanistanis when the USSR invaded or the Kurds or Chechnians etc etc etc. And they are doing such wonderful things in Gaza and Lebanon.
I have the utmost faith in the UN, just not when it comes to protecting anyone. UNICEF, UNESCO etc great, but thats about all I see that's of positive benefit so far.

well said Salty - I dont agree with the Iraq situation, but I also dont believe in being isolationist either, just because something doesnt affect Australia directly doesnt mean we can totally ignore what's happening around us. One day we may actually need a strong ally, and if its not the US or England, any other suggestions?

A major International company was looking to hire someone for an
important position, so they interviewed dozens of applicants and
narrowed their search down to three people from different parts of
the world.
In an attempt to pick one of them, they decided to give them all
The same question to answer within 24 hours, and the one with the
best answer would get the job. The question was:- 'A man and a
woman are in bed, nude. The woman is lying on her side, with her
back facing the man, and the man is lying on his side, facing the
woman's back. What is the man's name?'
After the 24 hours was up, the three were brought in to give their
answers.
The first from Canada, says "My answer is, there IS no answer."
The second, from New Zealand, says "My answer is, that there is no
way to determine the answer with the information we were given".
The third one from Australia says "I'm not exactly sure, but I
have it narrowed down to two names. It's either: Willie Turner or
Willie Nailer."
The Australian got the job...!!!!!!!!

I've traced my lineage back to the second fleet convicts and to keep the family tradition alive I have a police record (lol) - even I regard myself as a new australian compared to the indigenous peoples - all you others are newcomers and should embrace each other to help create a truely multicultural society.

Theyt should ban sharks, what right have they to encroach on the best surfing beaches - ban them I say, place them in detention centres where they can do no harm
