HST
Posted:
11/18/2009 5:59:16 PM
The Liberals at Queen's Park tabled legislation to replace the PST with the HST (13%). The HST is scheduled to come into effect in Ontario on July 01, 2010. Ontario will be joining three other provinces already with such a tax (Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia since April 1, 1997). British Columbia will also adopt HST on July 01, 2010.
Despite the exemptions, rebates and advantages of the tax for businesses (for some of them) there has been growing opposition to the tax. Is there anyone working in an industry in Ontario that would benefit from the HST or not?

Roger Daltrey

I've heard that Daltrey has had some voice problems on this tour. I saw him in Toronto in 2006 (as part of the Who) and he warned the audience that he was feeling under the weather but he seemed to be in fine form to me.
I suppose you could chalk it up to a bad cold or maybe the age process is catching up to him. Dunno....

Time to launch...from elsewhere?
Posted:
10/28/2009 4:43:18 PM
I believe that one of the main considerations for putting the launch site on the east coast of Florida was the complete lack of 'land' to the east...the direction of launch.
I think another consideration was that having rocket launches as close to the equater as possible within their nation's borders. This allows for less needed thrust & fuel because of the greater rotational speed of the earth at it circumference. The USSR had theirs in Kazakhstan (not sure if Russia still uses it) and the European Space Agency uses the French colony of Guiana on the equator (plus the nearby Atlantic ocean for launch direction).

You can always work under the table. If you dont fall foul of the law. The authorities wont know how long you stayed in Canada.
We give work permits like candies. Just apply then after 3 yrs you can always upgrade it to PR.
I didn't read all the entries here but I'm curious as to what the OP (who has since deleted) and the b/f said to the customs/immigration officials at the border regarding her stay.

Michael Bryant killed Darcy Sheppard
Posted:

Just deplorable.
Not really. It was just a pre trial court date to set another pre trial court date (Nov 16). The whole thing lasted a few minutes. It wasn't like anything was going to happen. All routine procedural stuff.
The meat of the matter, starting with the preliminary hearing, won't be until next year and the trial is probably at least a year away. Though Bryant's lawyer has indicated they want a trial sooner rather than later.

Diverted - Gander
Posted:
10/7/2009 11:48:05 AM
I think our backs are getting a little sore from all the patting we're giving ourselves. It's been eight years, give it a rest already
NBC's Tom Brokaw recently did a broadcast on that story for the 9/11 anniversary which was probably why some are talking about it again after all these years.
Even to this day, Gander and St. John's airports are used as diversion points for commercial aircraft flying over the north Atlantic that have to make an emergency landing (engine trouble or a sick or unruly passenger etc).

any1 ever bring up the subject of cigarette addiction? if so, was it a fruitful discussion?

Ok, for starters. I dont manipulate people into doing it. I let them know up front that its a passion for me, and a fetish.
Yet you wrote earlier......
I was very uncomfortable and couldnt share intimacy with them until I had convinced them to take up the habit. Only after they did were we able to really get close.
Smoking is an addiction, not a "passion" or "fetish."

and giving something like that up, changing yourself for someone else is the worst reason of all to do it.
But its okay to change others for your own selfish needs by manipulating them to take up a nasty & unhealthy habit. I've heard of guys doing really dumb things just to get laid but this is the first I've heard of this.....

I think Quinn is coaching Edmonton now.
I guess Burke is taking a chance the team will do better than expectations and those 1st rounders won't be so high. Good signing though.

I see quite a few women in their late 40s who have the 'Undecided/Open' selection for the kids category. Not really sure this is the realistic option, unless they are thinking of adopting.
It can also mean they would be willing to allow children of a potential partner into their lives (having step-children).

A less than complimentary term for certain things in pop culture. It can be anything from "bathroom humour" to reality shows, teen pop sensations to kitsch & camp.
Some topics in these forums scrape the very bottom of low brow.

District 9 – an original idea?
Posted:

I liked the docudrama style of the film. The big twist is that the aliens are not the invaders looking to exterminate the human race or play the paternalistic overseers by putting the humans back on its proper course of development. They seemed to have stumbled onto earth and don't want to stay. It took me several minutes to realize these "prawn looking" creatures weren't going to use any superpowers or strength to overcome the human race.
Plus the setting is not in New York or London but in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Obvious comparsions can be made to the holocaust, apartheid, and post-apartheid South Africa including the plight of immigrants from other African countries (Zimbabwe).

Labor Day: Does it mean anything to you?
Posted:
9/5/2009 3:17:05 PM
When I was a young fella, Labour day only meant the first day before school and that we didn't have to start the school year on a Monday.
Aside from Canada and the USA, the rest of the world seems to honour the worker on May 1st or May Day.
Officially, May 1 in the USA is Loyalty Day.

Michael Bryant and Darcy Sheppard
Posted:
9/4/2009 11:41:54 AM
On September 1, 2009, Bryant was taken into police custody after an altercation with cyclist Darcy Allan Sheppard[10] that resulted in Sheppard's death. Bryant was later charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death with respect to the incident.[11] Witness reports indicated that Bryant's black Saab convertible and Sheppard were involved in a "minor collision" that led to an argument. During the argument, Bryant drove away, and Sheppard grabbed onto the side of Bryant's vehicle while it was moving.
Some witnesses said that it appeared as though Bryant was attempting to knock Sheppard off the car by brushing against trees and mailboxes on the wrong side of Bloor Street approaching Avenue Road. [1][12][13]
Bryant was later released by the police on his own recognizance, and his first court date is scheduled for October 19, 2009.[14][15] Given his high profile, Bryant has hired the services of a communications consultanting firm, Navigator Ltd., and will be defended by Marie Henein.[16] The Ministry of the Attorney General has appointed British Columbia's Richard Peck as the prosecutor and is expected to have an out-of-province judge oversee this case, as Bryant previously appointed judges and oversaw Crown prosecutors when he was serving as Attorney General.[17]
On September 2, 2009, Bryant resigned as CEO of Invest Toronto, stating that he was innocent of the allegations against him but that the arrest would act as a distraction for the corporation.[2] It was suggested that the condition of Bryant's release, which required that he remain in Ontario and that he surrender his passport, would make it difficult for him to continue to head Invest.[18]
I lifted the blurb from Wikipedia.
What do people make of this?
Issues seem to range from road sharing (bikes & cars), police handling of the case and even accusations that Bryant will walk a free man because of his background as a well connected lawyer, former MPP and AG of Ontario

Toronto Maple Leafs 2009-2010 Season!
Posted:
8/31/2009 1:46:07 PM
Wow, someone starts a thread about the Leafs and all the haters crawl out of the woodwork. I wonder how many of them actually follow the Toronto/Montreal rivalry and the moves both teams made off season? Burke has shored up the Leaf blue line for the coming season that should make it harder for opponents to score.
In Montreal, a number of players have jumped ship to other teams including Saku Koivu, their captain since 1999, who was not offered a contract and went to Anaheim, Alexei Kovalev decides to sign with the Senators, Komisarek joins the Leafs and Tom Kostopoulos signs with Carolina.
I guess in Montreal they don't like players with a last name starting with the letter "k".
Plus Tanguay may sign with Tampa.
New coach and a "new" ownership (3rd time for the Molson family) and the possibility of a loan by the Quebec gov't to help complete the purchase. Lots of variables for the coming season.
If I were a Habs fan, I'd keep my expectations low for 2009-10 and avoid "throwing stones in glass houses."

What happened to the posts about the date of the burial being pushed back again?
It got deleted along with some other recent postings of mine.
I've heard September 3rd is the day of his burial. Some members of his family objected to having him laid to rest on his birthday. Can't say I blame them.
The police are going to treat his death as a homicide but more than likely if there are any charges, it'll be for manslaughter.

2009 Canada Games In Prince Edward Island
Posted:
8/13/2009 12:57:12 PM
I understand that PEI is hosting the Canada Games this year. The games are starting this weekend and will run until the end of August. Anyone participating, attending or volunteering?
(I'm under a 200 word posting minimum to start a new thread, hence the cut n paste job below)
Welcome to the official website of the 2009 Canada Games, a national multi-sport and cultural event being held August 15-29, 2009 in the Province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Since 1967, the Canada Games has evolved to become the pinnacle of national competition for Canadian athletes and includes divisions for persons with disabilities and an arts component called the National Artist Program.

Worst owners/ management
Posted:
7/31/2009 1:54:13 PM
Personally I think out of all professional sports the worst ownership belongs to the Toronto Maple Leafs
Yea, the Leafs are run by business interests that don't seem to be interested in winning so much as making cash. But the difference is that it was worse under Harold Ballard in the 1970s and 1980s. Especially in the latter decade. Ballard was really overbearing and loud, mean spirited, a media whore and didn't know (or care) how to pick a winner. At least George Steinbrenner and Al Davis, for all their failings, could say they won championships in their respective leagues.
But since Ballard's death in 1990, it isn't fair to say they've had "crappy season followed by another crappy season." They've iced much better teams since those horrible 1980s lineups. They've been to the semi finals 4x since 1993, they need to be good enough to make that leap to get to the dance.

I love Newfoundland, too.
I've been there 2x (including St. John's) since 2003 and will be visiting the provincial capital once again in August.
In 2006, I followed the Viking trail in western NL up to Labrador. I saw the wood and gardens, too.
The way it was explained to me was that the piles of wood are stacked firewood belonging to the locals. Each pile is recognized as belonging to whatever family or home in the area.
The gardens by the road also belong to the locals. They're not supposed to be there but the gov't turns a blind eye because there is so little arable land in NL.
Don't recall the ponds/streams with the steam. Can't help there.
I actually like St. John's. I wanna see that museum they have opened up, "The Rooms." Very hilly town I must say. I dunno how they do it in winter driving and parking with the snow and ice. They must use their emergency brake quite a bit.
Good to hear Pabst still survives in the GWN.
