Invasion of privacy?
Posted:
11/12/2009 7:26:09 AM
Figured I'd share one more interesting tidbit that affects many (this bunch too likely) before I leave this @#$%&! site.
This is a story about something positively obscene that is occurring in the United Kingdom. But if you think something similar, to some degree or other, isn’t planned for you right now, wherever you are, then dream on — be happy in your ignorance.
Listen to this…
The UK government is about to require all telecoms companies and ISPs to store the following end-user communications:
Every phone call
Every text message
Every e-mail
Every website visit
This mass of data must by law be STORED FOR A FULL YEAR and be available for perusal by “authorized” bodies.
And you’ll never guess who’s included under the “authorized bodies” tag…
According to the London Telegraph newspaper, 653 public bodies (so far!) are going to have access to all of your personal communications information showing not only who you have contacted but also when and where you contacted them. And just in case that isn’t obnoxious enough, a record of all the websites you visit will also be stored. The 653 public bodies includes police, councils, fire & ambulance and prison governors. Huh? What could possibly justify giving a prison governor the right to delve into the affairs of someone who’s not in prison? Or are we now all criminals until proven innocent?
Now, you might reasonably expect that there would be some oversight in place. Well there is.
Before any of the thousands of “authorized” people in any of those 653 “authorized” bodies can delve into your personal and private (???) communications, they will need the approval of no less a trained and trustworthy personage than – wait for it – a senior police officer or the *deputy* head of a local authority department.
Feel better now?
As one government opposition spokesman has pointed out, the British government has a history of granting themselves new powers which they claim are needed to tackle terrorism and organized crime, but which inevitably end up being used for quite different purposes. Could not the same be said of practically every government everywhere?
See, here’s why the terrorism-and-crime justification doesn’t wash:
Law enforcement organizations the world over are well aware that the terrorists and the professional crims are already using advanced encryption technologies to keep their communications hidden from authorities. So about the only people affected by this disgraceful invasion of privacy will be the average citizen.
And that includes you, when it comes to your country’s turn, so don’t feel too superior about living wherever it is you live. Knowledge is power, and governments the world over crave both. Only your refusal to accept such objectionable intrusion will keep the power hungry overlords and the shadowy alphabet agencies in check.
You will have just one chance to put a stop to this.
As I understand it the proposed law will not come before the UK Parliament until after the general election, so British citizens do at least have a chance to demonstrate at the ballot box just how little public support there is for this incredibly intrusive plan.
Wherever you live, be on the alert for such moves by your government, and let your elected representatives know that such invasion of privacy is neither acceptable nor justifiable, and that the future of their jobs depends on their listening to you.
So-called “people power” works just fine in any society where government representatives are elected, but only if enough people make enough noise.
You can start right now by spreading this warning to any social media sites you frequent.— Sites like tweet this, plurk this, buzz this, delicious, digg this, facebook, my space, ping this, reddit this, stumble this, etc.
That's just a few that're listed but it sounds like an ugly mushroom cloud, far more reaching/intruding than that. Just figured I'd share that with ya fishies.

The PERFECT HUSBAND
Several men are in the locker room of a golf club.. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen.
MAN: "Hello"
WOMAN: "Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?"
MAN: "Yes"
WOMAN: "I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?"
MAN: "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much."
WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2009 models.. I saw one I really liked."
MAN: "How much?"
WOMAN: "$90,000"
MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."
WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing...the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $950,000"
MAN: "Well, then go ahead and give them an offer of $900,000. They will probably take it. If not, we can go the extra 50 thousand if it's really a pretty good price."
WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!"
MAN: "Bye! I love you, too."
The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths agape.
He turns and asks: "Anyone know who this phone belongs to?"

Guilty pleasures you probably shouldn't share

I hafta agree about the A & W onion rings. A good decade ago or better, they were "to die for". Like so much nowadays though, they've become a victim of the cheaping out trend in todays business world. They used to be a nice big juicy ring of onion with a yummy coating of juice from the onion moistened, seasoned batter. Nowadays an order often contains mostly brown strings that were once shavings of them super-pricey veggies, and shrapnel. (heck, even I can cook that well)
OT: No guilt here.

Now I just spoil other people's critters as I figured that'd lighten the load. (yeah, right!) Still bites to see them move on too.

I didn't see any of the interviews mentioned and likely never will as it's not a big enough concern for me to download for hours, maybe days on dial-up. One comment though to those who feel her interviews seemed sincere and are making up their minds solely on that input. We ARE talking about a professional actress, with wants and needs from a corresponding lifestyle no less. I bet most of us have had the wool pulled over our eyes at least once by people who DON'T act professionally. Also as was mentioned already, why bring up an affair with Jagger? Still sorry about her REAL misfortune, but me thinks me smells gold-digging now.

Yeah, too big of a logjam at the end for my liking but under all the Oilers circumstances, I can't say too much.
Regarding Schremp, I kinda think that'll come back to haunt us a tad, like Glencross did.
Too bad Eberle couldn't be squeezed in but as mentioned, he's still just a pup. Lotsa time for him.
Jacques has sure been performing like he wants a job in Oil country this season.
Comrie too. (actually he's burning it up like I didn't really think he had in him)
Lotsa other positives thus far too but one detail I can't say leaves me with too good of a feeling is the
upgrade
from Roli to the Wall. I feel a lot of factors that made a difference in the games weren't really weighed right when concluding he was so vastly superior to Roloson as the numbers showed. IMO, Roli had really found his A-game again and won lots of games for the Oil almost single-handedly last season. Myself, I'd trade goalies back in a heartbeat. At very least for another year or two.
T'was a nice win last night though no matter what ones feelings about particulars. Next stop.......

Much like the Michael Jackson scenario, this'll boil down to "who/what ya gonna believe". I think there's a chance almost any of the opinions already given here COULD be valid and accurate. For the most part IMO, the only irrefutable thing said here so far is that despite being a great musician at one time, Mackenzie's dad (and any other similar perps) was a sick bastard.

Well, I think Gretz made a good move under the circumstances as things were starting to get antsy in the desert and the season starts PDQ. With all the team's troubles, scapegoats were becoming high in demand. Heck' it even sounded a tad like he misses home (the hockey COUNTRY) too.

For the most part, I agree wholeheartedly that media has become reduced to nothing but bottom line. AKA "What'll sell". As already mentioned too, there's virtually zero chance of making a statement that'll please EVERYBODY. Especially as events play out and things change.
As happens so often in the pond though, I suspect a wee tad of sloppiness in a post led to this minor altercation. My guess is that by
you'd be screaming cover-up.
rBg actually meant "SOMEBODY'D be screaming......" and I'd agree 100% with that. Levelled as a direct accusation based on strictly assumption (as occurred here) however, is just asking for ripples in the pond.
Soooo........LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Sounds like Gretzky's abstaining from dealings with the team until this nasty little bankruptcy saga plays out. He's sure not doing himself a favour with respect to retaining/gaining popularity in them parts though.
Regarding the case itself, it's still pretty tough to predict how the cards will fall once Baum makes up his mind (or the longshot of arbitration happening and working) but Balsillie sure sweetened his offer yesterday at a hearing, offering to at least let the Coyotes finish the 09-10 season in Glendale if he does get the team. (sounded like Baum liked that change)
edit \/ \/ : I think Gretz should take the high road and stand behind the team right now. Sounds like his odds of getting paid something aren't hopeless either yet but he's cementing his "no job to go back to" status notably.
I do agree that it's crummy how stuff played out but I also agree that he stunk behind the bench so....... (tradeoff I guess)

) Looking like an awesome deal thus far too for just over a mil .
Didn't get too good of a test for The Wall either really, (only 18 shots) but a shutout for his first game, hence a bit of ego strokin', is likely a good thing for him right now too.

Sounds like it should be quite the interesting game tonight. We're supposed to get a peek at what all the hoopla was about concerning Tavares for the Isles, as well as the new "shining star" for the Oilers, Eberle. Still no Bulin wall though. I read someplace that it might offer the "revenge of Roli" too but that looks like just rumor. Time for a "big Mac attack" too it sounds like and he has no sore cheek anymore. Drunk Driving 19 times....
Posted:

Okay, I just wanna nip this before things get all blown outta proportion. Firstly rBg. I'm not ranting, hence have no need to relax. You've been around the pond long enough to know that people sometimes aren't too good at reading between the lines and often a result of such attempts is conflict which was in no way meritted. Best to just take things AS THEY'RE SAID and respond appropriately. In this case yeah, "absolute worst possible scenario" would mean loss of innocent life I think (at least that's the worst case scenario I can think of) making all the other scenarios you later outlined something else and more trivial in your words. Read the bold print in msg 33 from msg 27. So it's not me trivializing drunk driving, sorry. It was YOU, albeit accidentally apparently. I was just responding to what you ACTUALLY said and not what I surmised you likely meant. I'm not one to put words in others mouths then condemn them using false/fabricated allegations.
Now regarding your other allegation of me trivializing skinners as well, that's also far from the truth. "Skinners" is an ugly term I learned in jail and believe me, it's far from a trivial affair there. If it's found out and the offender's not hurried away to protective custody, they'll be raped and beaten in short order, sometimes to death. Personally, I say write it on their forehead with a black marker and chuck 'em into general population. (might want earplugs though)
Now Tall-n-curvy, first thing I'd like to say is that I'm truly sorry to hear about your misfortune in earlier times, and I want to assure you that in no way am I implying that it's a small offence, nor that it should only have minor effects on a victim. However, over my years I've met more than a couple girls who claim to have experienced such ugliness in their past as well and some have resolved to move on with their lives instead of letting their prior misfortune play a dominant role. I've known a couple of great gals in fact who just flat out refuse to let that black cloud have much of an effect on their lives and seem like regular folks with no noticeable trauma. (at least that's what they claim and portray pretty convincingly) I can only guess that it was msg 36 which offended ya but I said "sometimes" blah blah blah therein, and in context it was a rebuttal to a previous disagreement concerning penalties relating to drunk driving which I've now addressed at some length. I still stand behind my prior opinions thereof.

I find nothing funny on this topic and it's not an issue of having class or not, it's about a ridiculous statement claiming folks who have what sometimes is little more than the same that happens..... on a bad date even, being lauded as having experienced something absolutely life ending, yet at the same time claiming people who become paralyzed, brain damaged, lost limbs or whatever in motor vehicle accidents, (at the hands of drunk drivers in this case) being though of as affected trivially by comparison.

I'm not a fan of skinners (rapists/molesters) either but they kill far fewer innocents and "completely destroy" a fraction of the lives that drunks behind the wheel do.
Once again, we will have to agree to disagree bit. Skinners
completely destroy lives with every act
of molestation/rape they do, whether convicted or not.
Drunk drivers
destroy NO lives unless the absolute worst possible scenerio prevails.

Wee bit more complex than that rBg IMO. A distorted drunken train of thought is no excuse whatsoever if a person realizes that it's (getting behind the wheel when one shouldn't) a virtually unescapable consequence of going out drinking, and still decides to drive to wherever it's going to happen. That knowing they'll - a)likely be in no shape to drive.
and
b)Have a vehicle in their presence that is dangerous in the hands of a drunk yet need to get it home somehow eventually, tempting the person to make a stupid decision even moreso, and when their resources for rational thought are knowingly very impared.
If one wants to go on a bit of a bender they should be responsible enough to be dropped off and arrange rides, cabs, designated drivers, etc. PERIOD! While I feel instant execution is too extreme too, I don't like the alternative of having them on the street before the weekend so the lawyers can make yet another easy buck already either. Let alone the victims.

Hmmm. Sounds like SOMEBODY must have woke up and smelled the coffee. No changes but deal now accepted by workers is what I'm hearing.

All the know-it-alls sure show up in droves when somebody someplace mentions an election. They'll fling mud at just about everybody who doesn't do as they're told, (by whoever's hogwash THEY'RE buying that day) despite the fact that that may actually be showing insight beyond the professional mud-flingers' own capability. I'd easily give 10 to 1 odds that folks would still be complaining if there was a 95% voter turnout but that their whine would just be directed at some other trivial detail (likely inconsequential) that THEY think is wrong with the world and "others".
I'll repeat MY rant from a few years ago in the pond and go dig out an umbrella.
I said voting sometimes seems like it isn't too different from being told "you're about to be thrown down and sodomized, what color jersey would you like the perp to wear?" Now, if there was a box that offered keeping the ridiculously squandered tax dollars and paying ones own way, plus just the obvious essentials, (frugally and responsibly there too) minus the parasites and their pawns, voter turnout would likely skyrocket. (I know I'd be camped out waiting for the polls to open) As things stand though, I go vote when either a party says things I endorse fairly earnestly AND believe they'll carry through with, (tough one with Canadian politics nowadays) or if there's a blatant plague in power that desperately needs to be purged. (whereupon I'll even "settle for the least unattractive alternative")
Pretty high'n mighty for someone to ASSUME folks who don't vote religiously are oblivious of the details alleged in the partys' platforms too. Maybe they're just fed up with the lies and feel they have better things to use their time for, and as for the spoiled balot, that might be useful for cleaning up the mess from being bent over and abused.
Last I heard it was STILL a free world in Canada and people could use their time AS THEY SEE FIT PERSONALLY, as long as a few lines weren't crossed.
Tired enough excuses for ya "oh omniscient one"?
OT: I was never a big fan of Ralphie so this goes into my books as a minus for the Alliance. I'm a firm believer in the adage that "the apple doesn't usually fall too far from the tree". Only time'll tell.

There ya go smilie. (ya might wanna grab a chair 'n sit down for this one
) They just inked a 1 year deal with Comrie. Allegedly for 1.125 mil (that's swallowable) but I'm still not too sure we really need him. Hopefully he proves that theory wrong this season.

I guess we'll just hafta agree to disagree on this one rBg. Here's an interesting read that seems openminded and unbiased on the topic. (coincidentally, it mentions drinking and driving and unpredictable effects of related legislation and penalties designed to deter such, as well as some other factors which may or may not play a role)

Okay, you are accurate in saying that this is a big step (all things considered) in the right direction for the courts at least, finally, and I'm happy to see this progress at least, don't get me wrong. I was more talking about the BIG picture, and how laughable a deterrent our justice system is to those taking these chances and reaping the benefits, or occasionally getting a slap on the wrist and being made stand in the corner for 2 or 3 minutes.
Regarding the life sentence for impared driving, yes I DO think he shoulda been somebody inside's
BIATCH
for life long ago, as there's virtually no doubt his actions would eventually lead to events such as transpired or something crummy. I'll even go so far as to say that if things were penalized even somewhat appropriately in this country, crimes would start do diminish notably and we wouldn't have a need for as many additional cells as one might suspect at first. I also think it would deter crime far more effectively, period. (a good thing no matter how one looks at it) Look around the world......

I agree with all but the "legal system should be applauded" part rBg. My take's more like "ABOUT F'N TIME!!!" and I'm disgusted that innocent people's lives had to be destroyed or ended before pseudo-adequate punishment was even doled out at all. I also realize prior penalties were ignored as adequate deterrents, but again, who's fault would that be with such trivial consequences faced for being caught.

I also was a staunch "union man" for nearly 20 years prior to my accident and witnessed a notable amount of it's evolution over the years. (mainly just construction/building trades, and large site unions like Syncrude, Dow, Genesee, pulp-mills, etc.)
The unions were necessary for hiccups in the economy (as we're about to witness once again I suspect) to prevent business from rampant exploitation of the workforce when times get a bit tough. The problem being that they're (most unions) no longer "by the people, for the people" as was lauded forever, but rather they've grown into big parasitic entities in and of themselves with far less regard for members and their rights anymore, let alone relations with business (their members' job market). All bottom line nowadays.
I predict another spat like occurred in the early 90s before too long. That was when the building trade unions were busted (rocky time for many unions) and had to put their feet back on the ground soon or fade away completely. I even feel that to some degree such is justified again considering present atmospheres. This Safeway workers story and circumstances are a bit of an example, though the union's recommendation was for workers to accept the deal on the table in this case, and the workers kiboshed it. Not gonna be pretty I'd wager.
