The double slit experiment (the elephant in the room).
Posted: 11/21/2009 2:55:56 PM
I'm still struggling to find a way to visualize it with an analogy. Because that is how I manage to wrap my head around things like this. And my attempts at finding an analogy are where it beings to hurt my head.
I wish someone could come along and explain it in terms that allow it to be visualized with smaller, broken down behaviours. I am not very good at that.

The double slit experiment (the elephant in the room).

Thanks for that link, Lincolnshire Sausage.
I had seen a couple of videos on it before, and that one was the simplest and easiest to digest. The two I saw earlier, one was very dry and boring, the other overdramatic and hokey.

Scorpio, when you say a blob shape, do you mean the back wall is showing a higher density of impacts closest to the centre and diffusing outwards?
The diffraction of light, and how that affects distribution, does not change. It is just that an interference pattern will slowly appear when it becomes less likely that a particle was successfully referenced as going through one of the two slits.

I believe when a particle is referenced as going through one slit, the initial probability wave of that particle does not need to express two smaller probability waves on the other side of both slits.
However, if there is no reference to which slit it went through, I think the initial probability wave has to account for potentially going through both slits which is expressed as two probability waves beyond the slits, and those two waves interfere with one another, affecting where impacts can, and cannot, happen on the back wall.

At least that is how I interpret it. I hope I am wrapping my head around this right.

The double slit experiment (the elephant in the room).
Posted: 11/19/2009 4:36:08 PM
In a battlefield of probabilities, who rallies them to greater definition? I would say it is the one whose presence is the most capable of creating a captive audience, and whose behaviour is the most convincing that there is an anticipated outcome.

Someone pointed out to me before that even another particle could be used to collect data on how the subject of the experiment is behaving as it passes through. And in that situation there is only a slight change in the pattern. It isn't a huge shift between interference waves, and a complete collapse of the wave function.

I don't really think about this stuff too much anymore. It hurts my head.

what do you think we are born knowing???

Would pattern, and discrepancy recognition count?
Babies come fresh out of the oven with those skills.

I think we also know how to acquire more information from things. Although when we are babies that usually involves putting something in our mouths.

I asked Magic 8-Ball some questions.
http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~ssanty/cgi-bin/eightball.cgi
I thought the answers could help contribute to the topic.

I asked "Are the concepts of god expressing something".
It answered "You may rely on it".

I asked "Are the expressions, faithful to what they are trying to express".
It answered "Don't count on it".

I asked "Will I ever know what we were trying to express?".
It answered "Outlook not so good".

Why are there 'no pyramids in Kansas '
Posted: 11/8/2009 6:00:58 PM
Bah, it was on my scavenger hunt list. I had no idea it was important that those pyramids in Kansas remained there. I'm sorry. I will put them back once the game is done. But this is a pretty big scavenger hunt we got going. The list is massive. It be a while before we are done and I can return all them pyramids. I'm very sorry for the trouble this caused.

Your case for/against God.

How often do people faithfully express the true nature of something very important to them. Even the details of fisherman's first catch is subjected to excessive embellishment.

I think it is just a part of what we are. Nowadays I feel so long as our expressions don't overshadow others' and force them to fall in our place, we can all get along and continue to express. Its all good.

How much weight should polls be given?

Sometimes what is being expressed in the results of poll, is just an indication of who had the best marketing strategy.
How many kids, taking a poll, would choose McDonalds for dinner every night over a fresh zesty salad.
And I am talking about one zesty salad here.

One of the forums I go to allows unlimited time to edit your posts.
We made a topic that created a game using the unlimited editing in that forum.
You post anything and when someone responds to it, you change your post so theirs is then interpreted an entirely different way. Exercises the grey matter a bit, and leads to some awfully crude humour.

Philosophies of math...Includes essay...seriously
Posted: 11/5/2009 2:40:11 AM
I am finding that most of the time it is instead ignorance, short-sightedness, or selfishness leading to misplaced loyalties, that appear as false logic. Mostly because I've yielded to it in spades as I am growing up. I reckon, I reckon.

I could travel to the end of time. Check to see if the original propositions which laid the foundation for math, were not later proven to be short-sighted and require some amendment. The universe could give us a ring-a-ding-ding one day and say, "Hey, I see y'all are fixated on 1, 2, 3 and schtuff like that. I really appear that tangible to you? I'll try harder to reveal something that cuts through the tendency to consolidate before its time."

But I broke my time machine, or perhaps it really was a clothes dryer.
I seriously need to fix that thing and find out.

Confused agnostic.
Posted: 11/4/2009 1:13:01 AM
I might be wrong, but I believe Luke 14:26 is a part of a story Jesus is telling about a master of a house. He was forced to summon all kinds of people to his great supper. All so that his house would be filled, as every one of his servants declined his offer showing proof they had others, whom needed tending to, that they cared for more than their master. The master was in the end calling for those who felt they had no loved ones, and those with no burdens to bear but their own, in order to fill his seats.

Luke 14 also talks about how when you build something, you should build it so that it can be fully used. Otherwise you will be mocked for starting something you could not finish, or something you have to finish in a way that appears disagreeable or cowardly. And when one offers something to others, they should not put themselves above others, because they in turn won't be offered anything by those they refused to humble themselves to.
Both points probably tie into that master of the house story.

I am getting the impression that Luke 14 is about Jesus trying to enlighten the lawyers and Pharisees who refused to aid a sick man because it was their sabbath. It sounds like he was trying to get the message across that they had built a foundation which would cause them to either leave others behind, or create something that ignored what others cared about, and therefore could not be completed.

I am not really sure about my interpretation of all this though.

I would not be surprised if this started with some kind of policy being deliberated on, which seeked to disclose information regarding testing of experimental aircraft. And the term UFO was used somewhere within it, which led to mucho misinterpretation.

Expression liberties generate information rivalry. The design which has to emerge in order to facilitate the reconciliation of information rivalry, is something I consider far more important than the information itself.
It is why I consider any language which seeks to remedy conflict with an authority on local levels, one that requires a ton of legwork in order to betray itself, as nothing more than a reprieve in learning the most inhibited of truths.

But then that is what humanity wants ... to delay the inevitable. To persist.
What am I going on about now. I don't even... lol

Official disclosure of alien life is here...
Posted: 10/31/2009 4:29:17 PM
Anyone remember the articles popping up earlier this year, about aliens from a nearby solar system contacting a group of scientists?

A group of scientists had made some changes to their equipment in order to get better readings from a star in another solar system, and it worked, so they celebrated their achievement.
But I believe it started with a Russian media outlet putting a spin on the story, and another media outlet read that, and put further spin on it. Eventually the misunderstandings of what was being communicated in each transition, turned it into being about alien contact.

Finally, the aliens may be put into the spotlight.

I posted in these forums, in the past, about how fed up I was with aliens peeking through my window. Usually because they make sure I see them before quickly hiding. Like they wait a fraction of a second, on purpose, just to let you know you saw something strange.

They are nervy lil tikes.

My 4 year old son has imaginary friends...
Posted: 10/26/2009 3:04:48 PM

This reminded me of my son's imaginary friend when he was little (he's all grown up now). According to my son he had "a man who lived in his (my son's) nose". He never really did say what the man who lived in his nose's name was...or if the man had a name. Just that he and the "man" would sing songs and talk together sometimes. Sometimes he would blame "the man who lived in his nose" for things missing or broken around the house. One evening at the dinner table I asked my son how his friend that lives in his nose was doing, as I hadn't heard about him for a while. My son, very casually said: "Oh, he died, so blew him out and threw him away". LMBO

That story wins this thread. Night everyone!

If you want to get rid of hand shaking, just pass a law that makes it more awkward than bowing.
For example, make a law that states every handshake must initiate an arm wrestling session.
Then when someone shakes you hand, you have to remind them of the law, so you and them have to sidle over to a table, while still holding hands, and then arm wrestle away.
Very awkward indeed.

Net Neutrality
Posted: 10/24/2009 1:19:59 AM
It is almost like the GOP do not really understand the concept behind Net Neutrality.
Or as some people are saying, they may be in the pocket books of the communication companies.

If ISPs are allowed to influence traffic flow, then what is the point of Google continuing its efforts in developing better page ranking algorithms. The market the internet provides will just fall deeper into the hands of all the predatory giants with the big bucks. Those types have proven in the past year that the only thing they are really experts at, are developing short-sighted strategies capable of crashing a market.

The atomic model of man...
Posted: 10/22/2009 2:18:49 AM
A few days ago I was just staring at a box of fabric softener sheets. I don't remember why.
I started thinking, "What is actually staring at this box of fabric softener sheets?!"
I swear I was not stoned.

I started reflecting on all the impressions that the people, places and situations throughout my life had made on me. And how all that information was tightly packed and organized inside of me, in a way where it created a vast network of paths of information interacting with each other through referencing one another.

Then I began to think, "Is that what is staring at the box of fabric softener sheets?"

But then I realized. Wait, my train of thought has changed because of what I am seeing here.
I am seeing the impression that this box of fabric softener sheets is projecting. And it is influencing the direction of my thoughts.

And then I thought, "I am also now an impression of the box of fabric softener sheets! Its impression now seeing itself, based on how it appears as referenced by, the impressions of the people, places and situations made on me throughout my life."

Seriously, I was not stoned.
Just sleepy. And I felt like a ball of silly putty being abused.

The atomic model of man...
Posted: 10/22/2009 1:37:53 AM
I sometimes think of this and try to compare it to something like a traditional institution.
Many generations of people can be a part of an institution, but if the framework which defines the identity of the institution persists, it will continue to attract the same types of people who will behave in a fashion that helps that entity persist.

I guess the framework which defines my identity could range from the laws of physics all the way to how past interactions with existence have left their impression on me. And as that kind of framework isn't easy to change, my identity persists. Does that make sense? :(

I do not know if I am wording my thoughts very well.
Holy smokes, I need to stop editing this and get to bed already. It is late.

Wow. Reading my last post, kind of makes my head hurt.
Especially that second sentence there.

Question for all of my fellow comic book superhero fans: would a mask really hide your identity?
Posted: 10/21/2009 12:21:56 AM
When I read the old comics, I get the impression that the everyday citizens really want to avoid thinking that their heroes are also regular people, walking around having to live regular lives as well. I remember in one of the Spiderman movies, people saw his real face and were kind of shook up that their hero was just a kid!
Maybe the lame secret identity cover-ups, comics use, tie into that.

There is a show called Hotbox where they kinda make fun of something like that.

A character named Lobsterman is the beloved hero of a city.
The skits are where he goes about his bland everyday life as his alter ego, but he is constantly making outrageously dumb verbal slip-ups. Ones which clearly reveal he is Lobsterman.
But the people are always quickly reassured that he isn't really Lobsterman, by the most moronic explanations he can think up on the spot for his slip-up.

I rarely ever smile, or even laugh (not including this emoticon ).
Some people get on my case as to why do. Is because, just like nipoleon, I will smile or laugh when something makes very happy or something is very funny! If I actually smile or laugh, it will be a pleasant surprise to people. Leave me be already.

Also because I apologize often, people say my apologies don't mean much.
Looks like there is no way to win this game.

Infinity, does it extent both inwards and outwards ?
Posted: 10/18/2009 9:03:36 PM
I believe an infinite universe would still be bound by the precedences of allowances in probability. Might be more practical to picture such a universe's evolution involving both an expansion of disparate probabilities and a recursion of those probabilities.
One that eventually allows a rather unconventional contiguity to develop.

Now excuse me as I have to go play Super Mario Advance.

If this happened on my home planet, things would have turned out differently. We don't hold a book to be sacred there. Nor do we even hold life to be sacred. The criminal is guilty of breaking and entering, theft, fatally shooting a senior in the face, and then bludgeoning the victim.

We'd sentence him to the human experimentation division and put him on a waiting list for organ harvesting. That is an honourable way to live and die on my home world. Earth let this guy get off easy with a sentence of lethal injection. And what a waste of resources too. Bunch of pansies.

We are simply riding on the back of a more progressive wave.

I myself used to be addicted to this...

I remember being scared to even talk to a boy on our school bus after he'd revealed he was an atheist. I was just brought up that way. And it is hard to break free of that, when the culture one lives in only reinforces the mentality.

Posted: 10/10/2009 5:36:26 PM
Good question.
I see a lot of the same responses and ideas posted repeatedly by different people.
That's why I seldom post to long threads. I have no interest in reading 13 pages of posts to see if my point has already been covered.
If I'm making my first post to a thread, I'll usually just read the opening post and then reply directly to it.
Depends on the depth of the topic though.

I couldn't resist, since wantasmart's post made me laugh. :D

California: The First Failed State?
Posted: 10/7/2009 4:30:30 PM
I am not from the US, but I was wondering if the image of California I got is true.
Isn't California a haven for wealthy people who like to spend tons of money on amenities.
I am not saying all people in California are rich.
Just what had I seen in the media, made it out to be filled with spas, golf courses, expensive sports cars, movie studios, etc.

The article says free health care, the housing market collapse, and immigration problems are some of the causes. Are those things really enough to dent the cash the wealthy pour into things? I do not know, and am just curious if there are other contributing factors.

Best cigarette I had was during an open house at college.
It made me loopy for some reason. I think it was spiked with something. D:

Worst was Sago cigarettes. They are made on a reservation, and although they aren't bad, they had to be re-lit repeatedly for some strange reason. We were trading 3 packs of Sagos for 1 pack of DuMaurier because of how frustrating it was. This was over 10 years ago, so no offense to any folks on the reserve that make em.

I have seen lots of pictures of otherworldly looking plants and bugs found here on earth.
Some of them are so freaky looking, you'd think they were props for a movie.
I think another world, even with similar conditions to earth and our solar system, would look very scary in how different everything looked, unless it was all a carbon copy in every way.

Posted: 9/28/2009 5:21:11 AM
It was a phone book that fell from an 8th story window.
Every since the impact, I get "the visions".
I put it in quotes because it is very mysterious and dramatic.
"The visions" involve ghosts who are trying to get me to search the world for their lost trinkets.

It is both a curse and a gift, I suppose. "The visions" I mean. Not the book. It was just an ordinary phone book.

Do you separate the art from the artist?
Posted: 9/28/2009 5:07:52 AM
A particular piece of work from an artist, might come from the convergences of thought patterns, and life experiences, which barely overlap those that dictate one's sexual nature.
So I can respect how a person can separate the art from the artist.

However, it is a natural tendency to condemn through association.
So I ain't gonna harp on anyone for disliking artistic works, because they dislike the individual, group, or institution which produced the work.

And I agreed with you.
OP is only asking for suggestions on low budget healthy eating. She has never explicitly implied it was in any way impossible for her. But just in case, I brought up a possibility of price differences between areas, as I truly did not wish to see the topic be about criticizing her.

Posted: 9/22/2009 11:55:11 PM
All I can wonder now is, if a super being comes along, will it even think twice about hunting and eating me if it suited it's needs?

What if my behaviour was perceived by it to be nothing more than some quaint, pale reflection of its own, not on a level for them to feel any empathy towards me... or whatever supremely inconceivable beings may feel which most closely resembles empathy.

Now I picture myself chained to its toilet.
Forced to recite poetry for treats. Oh what a world.
Gonna have awful dreams tonight.

How to eat on 200 dollars a month? (Frugal)?

SmilingSalmon, even though I agree $200 a month for groceries is no problem at all, it is possible there is a price difference between where you live and where OP lives.
I honestly have never bought food down in the US nor up in Thunder Bay, so I have no idea what prices are like in either place.

I live in Ontario as well.

Some weeks I buy 2 boxes of cereal, 3 litres of milk in the bags, a loaf of bread, a box of Kraft macaroni, 2 cans of tuna, 2-1 litre bottles of water, 2 frozen burritos and 2 frozen concentrated juices.
It comes to less than $25.00.
Throw in some eggs, soups, salad fixings, fruit and I'm sure it still comes to less than $40.00.

Although in the end it depends on what you like the taste of.
I just buy that stuff because it is simple cheap food, and unfortunately I need to eat to blend in with all you humans. lmao
BTW, that is not all I eat! It is just what I buy when I am lazy, impatient and want to spend less than 5 minutes shopping.
I have the route through the store memorized. :D

EDIT: Oh yeah, to everyone who is suggesting rice... thank-you.
I never thought of that. And it is a very good idea. *rushes to amend shopping route*

The fourth spatial dimension...

I'm trying to imagine myself as a 2-D entity within a 2-D world, and I can't for the life of me figure how 2-dimensions could be used to allow me to see anything.
