From The Inside

I am overwhelmed by all the support here, THANK YOU ALL.

I can't explain why, but I feel like CRYING when I read your replies.

I guess partly due to my day not going to well ... but that's another thread haha

anyway, THANK YOU ALL AGAIN for your support. The waiting list for a BB match up in my area is about 6 months. But who knows. I do have to go to a parenting seminar, I'M screened as well as my son. AND there is on going contact with the co-ordinator. PLUS my son has to go through a short "course" given by the BB association about appropriate and inappropriate touch etc etc etc which I am SO very pleased about.

TGIF! enjoy your weekends everyone!

Big Brother's - Opinions Please

Hi everyone!

I have a question, ok, I have a 10 year old son and two daughters 7 & 5

I went through a divorce recently, it was nasty, and half way through, my ex abandoned us and left the country with his new gf, didn't even say good bye, he just left. This blew my kids out of the water. It affected my son more so than my daughters. This Christmas will mark two years that he's been gone. Because he left with alot of things undone, the house went into foreclosure and a lot of other nasty things (I had to deal with HIS bill collectors, lost the car, etc etc) again, having to move etc etc affected my son more than my daughters. I'm assuming it's because he is the oldest and understands more.

I got him into counselling and family groups, this worked wonders for him, but I feel he still needs more. I recently called up the Big Brother's association for some information and possibly finding Zachary a Big Brother. I think he needs a male influence in his life right now. I have two brothers and my dad interacting with Zachary, but I really feel he needs more, someone OUTSIDE the family surrounding. Someone who can/will take him out and play sports etc and let my son get a load off his mind and just relax and have fun.

Opinions please? Other suggestions? Has anyone else signed their son or daughter up with Big Brothers or Big Sisters? Thanks in advance!!

Help me help my daughter....

Hi Scott

from the sounds of it, your daughter sounds very normal to me :) my opinion, don't rush her, she will blossom when it's time for her to do so :)

Alli

p.s. I am a "former" tomboy ... now I am an adult with a bit of tomboy "residue" haha

Funniest thing your child(ren) did or said??
Posted: 11/16/2005 12:52:23 PM
OK OK :) I have something to add ...

I run a preschool and I get to bring my youngest to work with me, she's 5. During snack one day, I was telling one of my 3yr old students to stop drinking her water and eat more snack. My concern was the little one not getting enough nutrition and a false full feeling from too much water ... my daughter comes up to me, whispers in my ear, "... good call mom ... Hannah's too young to get drunk ..." AHAHAHHAAHA

Heres a question for ALL parents!

I have a similar situation going on, I went through a nasty divorce starting about 3 years ago. TWO years ago, the divorce was in full throttle, he up and abandoned me and the kids, basically left us to rot, and if I weren't such a STUBBORN soul, we probably would have!

My kids (my 10 year old son especially) are very angry at their father. I dont' bad mouth my ex infront of the kids, but kids are pretty smart. They know what's going on.

From the divorce and because he just disappeared ... BUT not before doing massive monkey business with his credit cards and the mortgage etc ... I lost the house, cars etc etc etc, BUT I still came out the winner because I "won" the kids :) 100% custody and 100% guardianship. The kids haven't seen him in two years, HIS choice & his loss ... IMO! He will resurface one day, and when he does, my kids will have a field day with him Grrrrr!

My advice ... and this worked WONDERS for my son ... try and get your son (and yourself) some counselling. Someone to talk to, even if it's his school's counsellor, another family member, someone other than yourself. This is NOT an insult to you, but just that sometimes it's just easier for kids to talk about personal things with someone other than who's closest to them. For the longest time I was so hurt that my son wouldn't confide in me, ends up (I found out) that he didn't want to talk to me about his dad because he didn't want to see me cry or hurting more.

Your son has GOT to be hurting :( as you must be too. He's old enough to know what's going on ... but he has to learn how to channel his anger, it sounds like he's taking it out on you :( {{{hugs for him}}} he must be so confused and angry too.

KUDOS to you for doing such a great job!
