But some arrogant scientists blinded by mathematics (even our Math has limitations)

These "arrogant scientists" gave us the modern world. A spinoff of which is the very thing you're using to express your opinion to us all.

what is Time?
Posted: 5/3/2013 8:37:57 AM

That's funny, I too saw it as only ever clockwise! Are you left handed? I began to adapt my mind and then saw both directions! You know what I see now? A lady dancing because she is happy.

Nope, right handed. And 2/3rds of observers initially viewed it as clockwise as well. Sorry, but this optical illusion has nothing to do with right brain vs left brain dominance.

What does it have to do with the subject at hand? Simple, we all see things the way we choose too and read into peoples comments and thoughts the way we are programmed. We simply disagree, does not make either of us wright or wrong.

I still don't understand what you're disagreeing with, though. Are you disputing the fact that the Egyptians used a base-12 numbering system, from which they developed their calendar and measurements of time? Or are you disputing the fact that we're using their system, and that we came up with a similar one entirely on our own?

I wholeheartedly disagree with your point, though. Not all opinions are correct. Are opinions are skewed by the way we were brought up, yes, but that doesn't make everybody right.

Well, I originally saw it as a clockwise rotation, but I fail to see what that has to do with the subject at hand.

Why not 100 or 50? :)

Um, I just told you? Because we're still using the base-12 system the Egyptians came up with? But hey, if you can convince ALL governments to switch to a base-10 system for measuring time without it costing billions and billions of dollars, knock yourself out. But I'm pretty sure their response will be "If ain't broke, don't fix it".

History is merely gossip - Oscar Wilde

That doesn't really apply to mathematics, and other things that were, y'know, written down.

what is Time?

I will ask a more simplified question if you don't mind, why are there 60 minutes in an hour? why not 61 or 59?

A better question would have been "why not 50 or 100"?

A simple answer would be "because of history". We use a base-10 system for counting, but the ancient Egyptians didn't. They used a base-12 system, which is usually attributed to the number of lunar cycles per year...others say it had to do with the numb of joints on the hand or something. Either way, the number 12 was as important to them as the number 10 is to us, and all measurements of time were based on this fact. The only reason we still use it today is because of how history went down (wars, conquest, religion, politics, etc.)

what is Time?
Posted: 5/3/2013 5:59:06 AM

Time is just another measurement humans feel the urge to place on something to make them feel better. What is an hour? or better still, why is it and hour (60 minutes)? Why is a pint a pint?

I don't believe in time, only ageing, but are them two things the same? Sure someone will let me know. :)

Measuring time was crucial to human development. Organizing the "aging" process would come naturally to any intelligent and self-aware species. While words like "hours" and "years" may seem arbitrary, they have a long and fascinating history. It was inquisitive minds thousands of years ago that first noticed the earth rotates at a constant rate around its axis...that it revolves around the sun at a relatively consistent rate...that the moon itself goes through phases due to its own orbit around the earth, etc. The fact that we noticed, measured, quantified, named, and subdivided these natural phenomenen was inevitable, and one would assume that any other intelligent species out there in the universe would have done the same thing, using the unique characteristics of their own particular solar system.

So saying you don't "believe" in time is a bit foolish. Without this organizing factor of life, do you honestly think we would have reached the space age by now? Time, or the "measurement" of it, is a practical necessity. A natural byproduct of the true universal language: Math.

Ancient Astronaut/Alien Theory...what's your take on it?
Posted: 5/3/2013 5:26:58 AM
You are right that 300K workers is a bit high. Modern research is showing 50,000 at most, probably significantly less, and they took decades to build. One thing is for certain, though...they were built by men, not aliens.

"Why denigrate"....Did`nt know I did...But also dont realy care because I dont believe all I am told and will express my opinion if I want to,and if it opens up anothers thoughts, its a bonus.

And this is the problem with the internet. Anbody can have a misinformed opinion, post it on the internet as being fact, and people will believe it...all while hiding behind the defense of having an "open mind" when skeptics ask for evidence. So kudos for expressing your opinion that an alien species advanced enough to achieve interstellar travel came all the way here just to **** with us by building giant clay pyramids. But believing it doesn't make it true.

Why are most new rock bands terrible?
Posted: 4/19/2013 2:03:57 PM
And yet you keep coming back to tell everyone that you're right and everyone else is wrong

I'm not the one coming in here, spewing out the same old argument of "music ain't what it used to be". That same argument was used by your parents, and their parents...and THEIR parents.

There are thousands of talented artists out there making incredible music. Unfortunately they're not getting the exposure they deserve because people like those in this thread aren't looking for them. All new music is prejudged because it wasn't written 30 years ago. According to most people in here, the only music being made today is what's found on the Top 40 radio stations.

I love music. I love the idea of music, and I've built my life/career around that fact. I love discovering new artists from any genre. Frankly, I'm sick of this dumb argument that "nobody has talent anymore" yada yada yada "everything is auto-tuned" blah blah blah. You prefer music from 60's and 70's. Just admit it. There's nothing wrong with that. Just don't use your own personal taste to automatically dismiss anything new.

you've narrowed down the debate to a point you think argues out everything else...open your mind, unlearn what you've learnt.

If being open minded means believing every crackpot theory I hear about on the internet or Fox television without even comsidering alternate/reasonable explanations, then I'm close mimded and godamn proud of it.

Do you know who named Pluto? How did they pick a name so astutely, considering what we now know of the planet................

Wasn't it an eight year old girl? Not a planet anyway, so I really don't see your point.

Ancient people knew that the earth was round. Ancient Greeks even knew how big the diameter of the planet is. Christopher Columbus was not trying to discover that the earth is round (everybody knew that) he was trying to find a new route to travel from Spain to India.

The Summerians believed the earth was a flat disk. This is a fact. It's really not that hard to Google.

Classical Music
Posted: 4/11/2013 3:03:42 PM

Wow it's been ages since I've visited the PoF forums and here I stumble on to a classical music thread.
I recently attended a performance of the St. Matthew Passion and it was wonderful. It's unfortunate that Bach does not find his way into the concert hall more often, and the same could be readily said for his contemporaries.

Bach is still one of the most "performed" composers of all time, and will continue to be. 9 chances out of 10 you'll hear him at solo recitals, chamber music and string orchestra concerts, choral concerts, etc. Hell pop into a church on a Sunday and odds are you'll hear an organist playing his music.

It's just rare to hear him at the symphony, because the symphony as we know it didn't exist in his time. Major orchestras throw together one of the Passions or Oratorios when they can, but you're more likely to hear his larger works performed by chamber orchestras than the big name symphonies.

Are you saying musicians shouldn't be paid? Because if they weren't, there wouldn't be any.

Oh, I get it. You were only referring to the bands/musicians whom you don't count among your favorite. Because your taste is so impeccable.

Ancient Astronaut/Alien Theory...what's your take on it?
Posted: 4/11/2013 2:36:37 PM
Ok so I'll advise my original statement: ...it's pure nonsense to believe that any of these lifeforms, who would be capable of interstellar travel, would make the journey for the sole purpose of telling ancient Sumerians that there are planets that revolve around the sun, so that said Sumerians may be able to make shitty drawings** in some friggin' cave.

The problem with this theory are too numerous to count. Assuming we're talking about the same drawing, why didn't the aliens tell them that the earth wasn't a flat disc (which we know from their writings and other drawings they believed)?. Why didn't they tell them Saturn has rings (which aren't in the drawing)? Why didn't they tell them our moon wasn't a planet (again, we know they believed this). Why didn't they tell them about the moons of Jupiter and Saturn?

And for the billionth time, no self-respecting scientist would ever say intelligent life outside our solar system doesn't esist. All they're saying is that it's pure nonsense to believe that any of these lfeforms, who might be capable of interstellar travel, would make the journey for the sole purpose of making shitty drawings in a figgin' cave somewhere.

Why Do We Like Music?
Posted: 3/27/2013 8:08:37 AM
I gave a definition of music in my original post. I'll stick to it until I hear a better definition.

Your definition of music was:

Music are spoken words elongated in time with inflections and are presented in rhythms.

this definition ignores at least two crucial components of what we know as music:

1. Non-vocalized sound, and
2. Silence

Not trying to start an argument here, just giving food for thought.

That's a loaded question. We can even spice things up a bit by adding the follow-up question "What IS music?"

There really isn't any one answer. You can find answers in psychology, sociology, evolutionary biology, and a host of others, and all of them are probably right.

Yeah, but Peter, you can't believe a bunch of Colonels, Captains, astronauts, former U.S. presidents, NASA pilots, employees of NASA, heads of state, etc, etc. We all know that they're just a bunch of tinfoil-hat wearing loonies. How could they possibly have information that we don't? I mean, if there were flying saucers and aliens then Fox News would tell us about it.

Nicely done, btw.

You mean, the exact same people who are supposedly lying to us about landing on the moon?

It's almost as if I should only believe them when I have a pre-conceived belief about what they are supposedly telling the truth about?

Ugh, this is getting awfully confusing. How do you conspiracy theorists keep up with it all?

If you are careful of the sites you visit and the emails you open, you have defeated half the problem.

Truer words are rarely spoken.

All the AV programs out there are just as good as the others. The paid ones like Norton and Mcafee, might be decent AV programs, but as software they're absolutely horrible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only thing you're paying for is customer/technical support.

The best AV protection is the user. Treat the internet like a used-car salesman and don't trust anything (or anyone). Reformatting every now and then doesn't hurt, either.

FYI, believing that life exists elsewhere in the universe outside of our "pale blue dot" (aliens) is a perfectly reasonable assumption to make. Believing these aliens have visited our "pale blue dot", infiltrated our governments, mutilated our cattle, abducted our citizens, played "boogeyman" to our pilots, is quite another thing entirely.

Do you believe we landed on the moon?
Posted: 3/15/2013 2:14:44 PM

The Apollo 11 Lunar Module landed on the Moon with a weight of 14,696 kg (32,400 lbs or 16.2 tons). The LM descent propulsion system required 44.4 kN of thrust in order to safely land. With no atmosphere present, you unfortunately get no atmospheric braking to assist that landing.

Rocket science isn't as simple as you'd like to suggest.

Alright, so we have 16.2 tons of Lunar Lander. An adult elephant can weigh as much as 7 tons. A Harrier GR8 Jump Jet (VTOL aircraft) weighs about 15.5 tons fully fueled. That should do for our comparison given that it takes off vertically and uses jets to do so.

The thrust specifications for that fully-loaded Harrier GR8 is 24,750 lbf (110 kN). Unfortunately that's only a quarter of the thrust necessary to safely land on the Moon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz6sc0bgWcM
4:25 note the amount of jet wash and imagine what this would look like in sand (at four times the thrust)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_OD2V6fMLQ
4:32 into it you can start to see the surface dust getting kicked up from the thrust
4:35 "Picking up some dust."
4:37 significant amounts of dust seen in the video
4:40 scene obscured by dust

What exactly does a Harrier jet landing on earth have to do with the LM landing on the moon? You seem to have a pre-Newton view of how gravity and intertia works, as others have pointed out.

I seriously don't understand how any sane person can believe this moon-hoax nonsense, particularly after every single theory has been utterly explained/debunked by the most BASIC of science. It's almost as if you totally ignore all the arguments contrary to your position.

Ghosts
Posted: 3/14/2013 5:10:58 PM
I apologize, Rheostatic. I was wrong to be so uncivil. No excuse for it, other than wicked age.

Apology accepted. I'm looking forward to wicked age myself, it ought to be a smooth transition. :P

To clarify my position, no I don't believe in ghosts...but that doesn't in any way mean I think less of people who do. My only issue with what one could call "pseudoscience" is when it denies important achievements for our species (moon hoax), offers what could be harmful advice to people under distress for the purpose of profit (psychics, telepathy, etc.) or the worst of all, endangers us all (anti-vaccinations).

Thankfully I haven't seen any cases of the latter on this forum. Believing in ghosts, or that aliens have visited us, is baloney in my books. But it's ultimately harmless, so believe what you want. It's not really hurting anybody.

But that doesn't mean it's unworthy of debate, which is what I and others here are doing.

But of course it will be that last sentence that just triggered your need to respond to my post. If Pavlov rang a bell his dog would salivate. And if anyone suggests that they read something from the web then you do the same, I'd bet. It's almost as if you've been programmed to behave this way. See? I just triggered another response from you. And you'll respond now in a way that's typical. Go on, then. (Make me proud.) This is the part where you 1) laugh that anyone would believe something they've read from the Internet and 2) laugh at anyone who's into conspiracy theories.

You still haven't responded to my post on the moon hoax thread, fyi.
