The picture rating system does this to a certain extent. If a person rates you a 7 or higher, they show up on your fans list. Personally, I have no desire to know who voted me a 1 or a 2.

YouTube/GoogleVideo intergration?

How do you propose monitoring for invalid/illegal content (Porn/Copyright Violations/Etc) on 1,000,000+ profiles?
....Even images are an ongoing battle.
1. One video greeting per profile.
2. Limit greetings to 15-30 seconds.
3. Same rules apply for videos as for images (must show user's face, no contact info or website promos, nothing illegal or explicit)
4. The "Report Profile" system would be used to remove prohibited content. Repeat offenders would be banned/blocked.
I realize there are lots of potential legal pitfalls that arise, as with any new technology. However, video greetings allow users to present a different side of themselves and would add a lot to the already-great POF site experience.

preview button for posts & messages
Posted:
5/5/2007 2:45:37 PM
This feature would be really handy, especially when it comes to emoticons and dancing bananas (I can never seem to get the syntax right on those thingy's...sigh). When I click the button to insert an emoticon, it inserts the code on a new line, and while it appears I'm in a new paragraph, that sometimes isn't the case.
Yes - I know the edit feature could be used for public posts, but there is no such option for private messages. Plz add the preview feature back - if you have the time.

Should race interest be part of POF profiles?
Posted:
10/30/2006 8:31:25 PM
My Quote was in respect to the Idea of requiring someone to fill out Webpage Infos catered to specific Searchers. There should be no such Requirement, and the Option to do so lies with each User.
I agree with ticketoride that one should be able to opt out of stating their racial preference. However, for reasons mentioned earlier, this question still needs to be asked.
Granted - not everyone will choose to answer it, but including it on the questionnaire will increase the likelihood that users will provide this information.
EXAMPLE:
Are you willing to date outside your race?
(Question/Answer will NOT be shown on profile if option #3 is selected)
(1) Yes
(2) No
(3) Prefer not to respond
This way, those for whom race is not an issue can choose option #1, those for whom it is can choose option #2, and those who find themselves receiving harassing e-mails can opt out by choosing #3.
Some other sites do have race preference but they don't have forums which gives them more protection from a troll attack.
Actually, there is another free dating site which has forums, allows race preference to be specified, and has been around for a while. As far as I know, troll attacks haven't been a problem for them.
BTW - The mods here are a dedicated bunch. I know some of us don't always agree with them, but I've gotta give 'em kudos for their time & effort

Should race interest be part of POF profiles?
Posted:
10/28/2006 1:53:18 PM
For the most part, I doubt many people would be interested to fill out another Webpage of Infos to cater to Searchers for certain Niche`s.
This is hardly a 'niche' topic. The overwhelming majority of users on POF are Caucasian, and there is a SIGNIFICANT proportion of Caucasians who are not racist, per se, but will not date people of another race (especially blacks) because of the social issues involved. Race is often as significant as distance.
At least 20 - 30 Items have been requested to be added to Profile Data such as chewing Tobacco, occasional Tokers, weekend Alcoholics only, ad infinitum. The Admin could easily double the length of any Profile Page.
I'm not sure whose idea it was to include forum posts and testimonials on profiles, but profile length was obviously of little concern when these items were added.
Further, and esp. a selection dealing with 'Hot Topics' such as Races could very easily be twisted to "mean" a person who would not be interested in dating a certain Race to be "Racist", and occasionally see such Comments overflowing onto the Forums, should someone vehemently not agree with something.
One could easily make the argument that Religion should be omitted on this basis, given the inherent volatility of religious discussions. Keeping the forums "clean" should not be the driving force behind what's included and not included on profiles. This is a dating site - not a social networking site. The purpose of sites such as this is to streamline the matchmaking process, and that is best achieved when when common "rule-out" criteria, such as racial preference, can be viewed at a glance BEFORE sending an email.
There's no question that adding this option would make POF more user friendly for people of all races, but ultimately it comes down to what Admin thinks. After all, this is his fishpond.

Assembler vs C language
Posted:
10/28/2006 1:39:05 PM
I happen to be a fan of Assembler myself; however, I've found that most companies prefer to use C language because it's easier to understand than assembler, and it makes the code easier to port to other processors & CPUs. Assembler is highly CPU-specific. These factors, along with a fair degree of flexibilty, have made C language the de-facto standard among programmers. The move to wireless computing has increased the importance of CPU portability. As an embedded engineer, over 90% of the software code I encounter is written in C.
There's nothing wrong with having some Assembler expertise in your back pocket, but if you want to succeed in today's software world, C's the way to go.

Including race interest on profiles would be a time-saver, especially for nonwhite POFers.
It doesn't have to be complicated with 200 choices - it can be kept very simple.
EXAMPLE:
"Are you willing to date outside your race?"
Yes, No, Undecided/Open, Prefer not to say

The Day Habeas Corpus Died

Citizen or not, if you commit an act of terrorism (or plan to) against this country you no longer have the rights or privileges given to you in her Constitution. Plain and simple.
What is so complicated about this?
Right now, everyone (mostly) agrees on what an act of terrorism is. Over time, as people warm up to the idea of the President having absolute power, anyone who disagrees with the government could be labeled a "terrorist."

How to cross the line without getting burned...
Posted:
9/15/2006 5:55:13 PM
I was thinking of something along the lines of canadian00's & KeilahM's ideas but with a twist. You mentioned that you have a lot of things in common with her, and you both enjoy talking about them. If you want to take her to see a movie, steer the conversation to a new movie that you both want to see, then segue into the invite by saying something like "I was planning to go see that movie this weekend. Would you like to tag along?" Making the ask-out seem like an afterthought allows you to come across as less desperate, and it also gives her an out. Besides - if she says no, you can still continue the conversation from where you left off.
Just a suggestion.

Contrary to popular belief, being a "pig" has nothing to do with size. A "pig" is a person who thinks only about themself, and uses others solely to suit their own self-serving interests. There are a lot of women (and men) on this site who fit this profile - and they come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. There are skinny women on here who think only about themselves (these would be "pigs"), and similarly, there are BBW's on here who are generous, kind-hearted, and sincere (these would be "princesses.")
There are good people on this site. One just has to sift through the bad ones to get to them.

What do you think of a person committing suicide over a broken heart??

SO? a 'christian' has NEVER committed suicide?
ah hem BULL*cough*SH1T!
@ SUCKAFISH
I did not say that a christian has never committed suicide, nor am I saying that being a Christian makes one immune to suicidal tendencies. A person tends to be suicidal when
something (or someone) they hold dear is taken away from them, and they have lost the will & desire to continue living. Jesus gives hope, and putting God first gives one a sense of purpose and direction in life. Without direction & purpose, all bets are off.
Just my two cents worth

How about a Science forum?

I just read a new theory about a supernova, meteorites and shockwave may have greatly affected the environment on Earth; but there's no good place to post it and discuss it.
It would be nice to see a science forum. This way, we could meet other POF members who share these interests, and discuss things such as Black Holes, Quantum Predictability, Superstring Theory, and Matrioshka Brains.
These fascinating topics really are out of place in the "mainstream" forums.

Just make it optional, for those of us who don't want to be associated with it. That is the fairest, easiest way to do it.
One thing I have noticed being here is that POF is willing to change and grow to make the site more valuable to its users, and therefore its advertisers. Make the astrology choice optional.
Based on your astrological sign, it is possible to tell in which month(s) a person was born.
Some people may want to keep this information private.

Best 100% free dating site?
Posted:
9/16/2005 8:05:52 PM
I'll have to break with the pack and go with
matchdoctor.com.
Their (non-restrictive) "ideal match" questionnaire makes it easy to tell whether or not
I meet a user's criteria. This is a HUGE timesaver, given the time it takes to write
a well thought-out E-mail. A number of other dating sites (free sites and pay sites)
use this feature as well.
Plentyoffish provides the ability to restrict contacts based on (very general) criteria, however, the lack of specificity makes it difficult to screen out the users whose criteria
I do not meet.
Don't get me wrong - POF has lots of other nice features (such as the ability to post multiple pics, a large user database (especially if you live in Ontario), instant messenger, and the forums - which are an excellent way to interact informally with other users.)
If POF adds the "ideal match" questionnaire, they will go to the top of my list!

A solution
Posted:
7/18/2005 5:05:53 AM
One solution would be to allow users to select, from a menu, traits their match
should have.
The answers to this mini-questionnaire would be appended to each user's profile.
By looking at these results when viewing a profile, it would be possible, at a glance, to determine whether or not we fit the other person's criteria. A number of other (free) sites have this feature.
This would shorten the turnaround time for those of us who are diligent enough to send out a lot of letters and put thought into what we write.

As far as Socio-Economic Status (SES) goes, it's not about an annual dollar amount for me as much as it is about the woman's attitude toward finances and whether or not she understands the value of hard work. I'm a gainfully employed college graduate (4-yr degree), and would prefer to date a career-oriented college graduate (2-yr, 4-yr, or advanced degree.)

Sterilization (Perm./Temp) of Welfare Moms
Posted:
6/4/2005 11:35:52 AM
This is one of the sickest things I've heard in a long time.
Who are *you* to decide that because someone doesn't make enough money, that they should be sterilized? If you know that you don't earn enough income to support more children, and you refuse to use protection, maybe you should consider being sterilized. But forcing other people to be sterilized, either involuntarily or as a pre-condition to receiving government aid is wrong, and opens the door for the Eugenics agenda.
Think about it. Giving the government this amount of power would place citizens in a very precarious position. At any point, the government could decide to eradicate "inferior" races by sterilizing its members. The fact that someone would want to lead our country down that path, simply for the sake of their own pocketbook is something that is too despicable to put into words. There are already safeguards in place to circumvent abuse of the system and to protect the children caught in these unfortunate circumstances (e.g. - child support, time limits on welfare benefits/ADC), thus it is not necessary to champion the cause of Eugenics to fix something that isn't exactly bleeding profusely (unless, of course, you have an ulterior motive :)
If you want to see an example of where this can lead, just look at Brazil. As recently as 1995, the police and militia would ride through the streets and spray homeless children with bullets, killing them. Unfortunately, this was seen as an acceptable practice in that country. To quote one officer, "We must kill them while they are still children, so that they don't bother us when they grow up." The rationale behind this isn't much different than the rationale behind forced sterilization. Granted, that probably won't happen in the U.S. or Canada anytime soon, but forced sterilization is a giant step in the wrong direction, any way you slice it. The solution, therefore, is to educate people about the responsibilities of raising children, and require that they fulfill those responsibilities once the commitment has been made.

Whats the best way to start a instant message
Posted:
5/17/2005 10:35:25 PM
My recommendation is to contact the lady first using email and establish an email relationship before trying to IM someone. I feel IM without contact is just rude and the person is just looking for sex.
When I instant message someone, I'm just looking to strike up a good conversation.
It's no different than walking up & introducing yourself to someone at a mall or nightclub.
If you're going to initiate a dialogue with someone at a coffee shop, it's not like you're expected to text-message them first.
If someone becomes indecent in an instant message,
you're totally empowered......CLOSE THE WINDOW.

A priest was supposed to serve at a diocese, but he wanted to take the day off.
So he calls in that morning and said he was sick.
Instead of staying in bed, he packs up his golf clubs and heads to the golf course.
Looking down from Heaven, St. Peter sees this and asks
"Lord, are you going to punish him?" God replies "Yes. I will. Just watch."
So the priest tees off on the first hole....Eagle! Second hole....Double Eagle!
Third hole....Birdie. Fourth hole...Eagle. And on it goes.
Again St. Peter asks "Lord, aren't you going to punish him?"
God replies "Yes. I will. Just watch."
So the priest continues. 16th hole....Birdie. 17th hole....Double Eagle.
18th hole.....Hole in One!
As the priest loads his golf clubs into his car, St. Peter says
"Lord, I thought you were going to punish him."
God replies "Who's he gonna tell?"
