I Don't Need A Man.., I very Independent..etc etc = RED Flags?
Posted:
11/22/2009 3:14:13 PM
I have not read every post of this 24 page of topic, so forgive me if this has already been stated:
There has been the distinction made that wants and need are seperate entities, yes. Do I need a relationship? Will I wither away and my life fall into chaos because there is no man in my life? No. Do I want a relationship? Will my life be a better place if I have someone to lean on when there is chaos in my life? If it is the right person, yes. If it is the wrong person? Will that exasperate the chaos? Perhaps.
But what about the difference between a man /woman wanting to be "depended upon" VS being "dependent upon"?
I am a strong, indepenent woman, and proud of it. I can fix my car, I can fix your car. I can carry the heavy bags, mine or yours. I think the difference that comes to my mind is this;
Does my partener recoginise that I am capable of looking after me and mine? Does he offer to help out of kindness and consideration? Does he allow me to help look after he and his? If yes, he depends on me and that makes me feel good about a relationship. Does my partener doubt that I am capable of looking after me and mine? Does he make me feel as if he HAS to do things for me because I can't? Does he completely keep his responsiblilities seperate from the relationship, or foist all the parenting/household, traditionally female roles on me? That tells me either he is percieving me as being dependent on him, or he is wanting to become dependent on me. That doesn't make me feel good about a relationship.
Perhaps it is a matter of perception. I have no issue changing the oil in the car so you can finish the ironing. However, if in the right context, I have no issue if you offer to let me hang on the couch with a good book and hot coffee on Sunday morning while you go deal with the car

What makes you decide to contact someone on POF?
Posted:

I think it is interesting to see how other people "cull" profiles.
I message lots of people just based on an interesting picture or comment in their profile, not necessarily because I want to explore the possabilty of a relationship with them. And yes, my profile is set to friends, and yes, the reasons are explained there. But to try to explain the whole criteria of what I may in any given moment might catch my attention? Not realistic, I don't think.
OP-I had questions similar to yours about the whole "Not Single/Not looking" and have always assumed that ment someone was either here for the forums, or a little "somethin', somethin'" on the side :) Nice to get other peoples view point on the topic.
Attention seeking? I think not. The beauty of a public venue such as this is if a person doesn't like the discussion, they can make it go away just but moving to another screen. Is it necessary to delete it from the interest of others? JMO

That was funny! Thanks for sharing the link.
All these years I been engaging in what I have refered to as "productive procastination", which will see me cleaning closets rather the doing the dishes because I thought I hated doing dishes.
Interesting to find out it is actually a personality disorder caused by the internet

I get mail from people with no posted photo on their profile, but have found if they stipulate "must have photo" they add one in the email they send...I guess lots of people don't want the folks at work that are on here also seeing them and giving them a hard time.

The video was great and enjoyed by many...thank you! If you guys do the trailer race again I would love to have the link to that one as well.....showed it to folks back home that organize events at some of the exhibitions and they are looking at including something similar....a whole new level of redneckism ( I don't even know if that is a word!)
I almost hope the Ford has issues so I can see the video of your finish!
I will be avoiding the bouqet like the plague, but thanks for the thought!

Hey Jester
The demo trailer race was the best( in my opinion!) but the kids were all pretty impressed when the "big truck" made it over the school bus....so we are still tabulating the votes on the best event! ( the adults are all leaning towards the trailer race, tho!) Hope you guys are doing that again!
Unfortunately I have Maid of Honor duties to tend to on the 29th, or you now I would be there again! I am pretty sure the rest of the crew is going again!
It was a great time, good venue- something for everyone. Not the major offroad experience for serious 4X4ers, but certianly great family entertainment, good variety of events, easy day trip from the city...blah, blah, blah...
Let's just hope the old Ford doesn't break! Then again, it would be interesting to see Jester finish the course on foot! Sure you aren't going to reconsider and get a younger driver again?? LOL
Have fun!

It was definately a good laugh, Duffy! Thank you!
I have a boy of appropriate age for these activities, and am grateful that:
a) I don't have water bed which would necessitate the afore mentioned calculations,
b) I don't have a ceiling fan and
c) I interviened with the play dough in time before the microwave could be turned on!!!
All of these seem very plausable to me, and wait with bated breath for similar situations to occur.....

I picked up coffee for the staff at my site visit this morning, picked up coffee for the girls in the office on the way back, in addition to making stops at two additional Timmies through the course of my day for just myself.......so I hit 4 different locations today, and may revisit the local one for a cuppa and Timbits after swimming!

Rodeos...should they go?
Posted:
6/5/2007 9:30:52 PM
My 4 yr old (is that still considered a toddler??) goes to rodeos all the time. Went to his first team roping at 8 days old, has been in regular attendance ever since....
We will be racing mini chuckwagons at the Strathmore rodeo again this summer...that is mommy2- be sure to bring your little one to the infield after the rodeo performance to meet some of the little race horses, ...we love having company back there, and the minis love to meet their little fans!!
My little guy goes to team roping and team penning events locally on a weekly basis, and is able to point out most roping arenas in the greater Calgary area as we drive by. He rides and drives teams of horses, picks out stalls, packs buckets of water and carries hay.....because he has already been taught that you have to look after your critters if they are going to work for you! He also hugs and kisses them and says thank you after each ride/drive....it is the cowboy way...or is the redneck way?? Either way, he already knows how it works!
As for the pet thing, great analogy, Papabear! However, clipping birds wings is actually the same concept as clipping nails...they grow back and have to be re clipped on a regular basis....but the point is a good one as they really don't like it much! I have welders gloves that I keep specifically for that purpose!
I do highly doubt that many of the animals we keep as pets would fare very well in the wild...too many years of selective breeding for house pet qualities...the same for most domestic livestock...rodeo or otherwise.

Maybe there should be a thread for religious beliefs we don't agree with?

I commend the efforts put forth to find the one branch office of the Humane Society that is being supported by a celebrity such as Pamela Anderson, that managed to make enough accusations of "potential" cruelity to force the rodeo to pull the timed events from their program....
I did a quick google search of rodeo associations just in Alberta and BC for the month of May...there were 76 otherrodeos that I found, and not one article about the "potential" cruelty at these ones....what made Cloverdale special? Are the events run differently? NO...they just had a big name activist involved who was able to cause a bunch of media hype....
I do have to apolagize to members of all the other provincial rodeo associations...SK, MB, ON, QB, NB...I didn't take the time to google you all....but I know my friends in QB hit two that weekend!

Wyndham-Carseland it is so, I too believe. Nice spot, lots of walking trails...once you know your way around, it is easy to get to the power dam, which idscool for the older little ones to check out!
Also , when looking for fun for very little people (say the 5 and under crowd), there is a fun little playground in Okotoks just off the 2A, right in town-Lions/Kinsmen Park, I think it is called, on the Sheep River. Playground, picnic tables, lots of mature trees for shade, shallow protected river frontage, a group use area with BBQ pits and DQ is right across the street for an ice cream treat ! It is also a camp ground, so might be a convienient local spot to do an overnight "camping "trip for those of us fishies with little ones, not yet ready to camp in the great outdoors! It only takes about 10 minutes to get there from the Shawnasey (SP) area of Calgary.

Hey Dan
Sorry we didn't recognise you...I was there with a couple of nieghbors and our kids, we waited for a few minutes shortly before noon, for as long as we could distract the kids with the garter snake that was on display! didn't see anybody I recognised so we carried on with children who were in a rush to see the big snake, Peggy eat her chicken!
Maybe next time we should all wear daisies in our hair or something so we can identify the group???

Was that Shark group ( not sure, as they didn't have name tags on their camo gear, and carried no signs to identify themselves...)not the ones involved a few years back with releasing the colony of research breeding dogs..... so they could be "free" ....so they could all be killed ( or have to be humanely destroyed) after being chased on to the highway, away from the security of the kennel that they knew to be home for the past 13 or so generations???
These animals had been under the supervision of CCAC( Canadian Council on Animal Care)....it was a very sad day when we were putting all those innocent animals to sleep in the middle of the highway, with whatever animal rights group it was spitting on us and calling us cruel....very upstanding citizens who were well informed about these animals, the breeding program, their housing situation, and what was in the best interest of that particular portion of the canine population....
Anything about that in their website???
To an earlier poster- am not saying that what you have seen is to your liking, or should be...you have seen it yourself and formed your opinion...that is fine...but there are others here who have stated that they have never seen, they have heard, or the looked it up under animal cruelty......and are stating just as strong of an opinion. I am just saying that instead of taking someones word for or against any topic, not just rodeo...base it on facts of the whole picture, either from first hand knowledge, or from a credable, reliable source that does have first hand knowledge and will portray the whole picture.....as there is good and bad to every situation.
OE-http://www.sharkonline.org/cowboyhistory.mv Shark also thinks that the cowboy heritage is upon sex slavery...hmmmmm

Rodeos...should they go?
Posted:

I really don't see the "rodeo" people freaking out...there have been statements of fact, the passing on of personnal experience and knowledge gained from years working in many aspects of the industry, as well as links given to actual, factual statistics and guidelines that the industry has put in palce and upholds itself, through registered, unbiased third party veterinarians and SPCA officials.
I did google "rodeo cruelty" and found alot of name calling( in the actual titles of the articles), opinions and hype...I was unable to see any actual facts. I did see lots of emotional letters, written by people who saw a one time incident, and were out raged at how "cruel" and "abusive" some of these events are.
The "rodeo crowd" openly admits that occasionally accidents happen...in the rodeo arena, in the pasture, on trail rides...to people and animals....my dog cut his paw on a walking path yesterday- is that cruelty to be walking the dog , just because he recieved an injury ? My child and another child bonked heads playing on a water slide...do we call CPS because unfit mothers are allowing their children to be hurt?
If you were to pull a big fat unconditioned beef bull out of the breeding pasture, yes , that would be cruel to put him in the rodeo arena...he is niether breed for, nor conditioned to the job of a rodeo bull.
At the same time, to throw a rodeo bull out in a pasture where he has to figure out how to find feed for himself, learn how to find the cows that are cycling and not get killed by another herd bull, that would be cruel as well....kinda like setting your declawed
( which is another thread entirely!!!) house cat loose in the woods and expecting it to survive in the wild.
These rodeo animals have been selectively breed and raised to do this job....such as many different animals within the livestock industry. Many parrallels can be given in the human world...it would be cruel to put me in an office environment and expect that to be my job...just as I expect there are many city/office types that would really be unhappy/unable to do my job.
To each there own, and again, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Cruelty is a matter of interpretation. Some people think it is cruel to crate dogs, some think it cruel leave dogs outside, tied up.... it is just good to know the facts and see the entire picture ( not just a snap shot in time) of a situation before forming an emotional opinion.

Rodeos...should they go?

Anybody who has been involved in the sport of rodeo, or attends on a regular basis , or is involved for any length of time in the livestock industry, does not need to do an internet search because we have actually been there and know what actually goes on and how the animals are treated.
Everbody is entitled to their own opinion, and personnally, I like to form my opinions on FACTS.
Yes, I could type in Rodeo Cruelty, and it will bring up every accident or incident back to the beginning of time, or lots of photo shopped pictures that were manufactured to get people revved up and on the animal activists side. You could type in "sunshine and roses" and do you think you are going to find the real time weather report for your back garden??? ( not being rude, just couldn't think of a better example to show that you will find what you are looking for, not necessarily the facts....)
Have a look at some of the other links that were posted....or if you want first hand information, call the SPCA and ask to do a rodeo inspection with them.
You may just be surprised the difference that you see between Goggling "Rodeo Cruelty" and a real life experience, with an informed tour guide.....

@ MSG 51....
"One thing everyone can see is that the rodeo supporters are violent, love to throw insults , ignorent, disrispectful......etc. in their posts. Go ahead and check all the posts if you like . "
Please point out one of my posts in which I was any of these above stated things!!!
I love a good debate, and I value other peoples view points and opinions, and feel everybody is entitled to have one. I do believe that ignorance means under knowledged, and take pride in my professional position within the livestock industry as an educator. I do, however, fail to see how you can group all "the rodeo supporters" as one entity under your above stated classifications. Or the non- supporters for that matter. Some people have made some good points, some not so much, on both sides. I am not saying people have to agree with me, I am just contributing my experience and knowledge to the "conversation".
To answer the question of one of the earlier posters, yes, rodeo livestock is drug tested, in particular the chuckwagon horses. They are tested for performance enhancing drugs( anabolic steroids, diuretics, etc) as well as pain killers ( such as Phenylbutazone and Banamine- to prevent them from being raced if they are not sound) They are also tested for some drugs which mask performance enhancers....the winner of the Rangeland Derby at Stampede a number of years ago was stripped of the top seat when one of his horses tested positive for a common, at that time over the counter, antibiotic which is on the banned list.

Rodeos...should they go?

Hey PB
The rodoe committes are required to have both an SPCA official ( not always in uniform) and a veterinarian in attendence at all sanctioned rodeos.
The rodeo committee is also required to have an ambulance and EMT's present.
If any of these personnel have to leave for any reason ( for example, the guy that had the massive heart attack at Strathmore last year and was airlifted to Calgary) the rodeo does not continue until they return or are replaced by qualified personnel.
We had to wait at the in gate with our Mini Chuck Racing Teams for the ambulance to return....same goes if was the vet or SPCA official that is called away on an emergency.
I am glad that other people are expressing their opinions. It is good to learn what other peoples perspectives are. However, one poster commented that she has never attended a rodeo. My question would be, how can you then speak with such authority on what goes on and how these animals are treated at rodeos? Just curious as to where your information has been recieved from...
I can state my opinion with confidence, as I have attended rodoes across the country, from Halifax to Northern BC, as a participant, stock contractor, chute help, SPCA official as well as with the attending veterinarian as a licenced Animal Health Technologist.

The livestock that is used in reputable rodeos and practice arenas are TRAINED to be roped the way they are in these sports. Anyone can show up before the slack performances and watch the cowboys teaching fresh cattle to lie when roped and tyed.
There will always be instances where it is done incorrectly, and animals or people get hurt.
I have dealt with more injuries sustained by livestock of all sorts that were out in the pasture then those recieved in a rodeo arena. The only difference that I have seen is that the public and media are present at rodeos. Animals that are injuried in a rodeo arena recieve proper veterinarian care...be it treatment or human euthanasia. An animal injured in the pasture can go days sometimes weeks before it is detected and treatment recieved.
The flank staps used on the bucking stock are not placed on their genitals...these animals are worth more as breeding stock then as bucking stock, and great care is taken by the stock contractors to protect their investment. The high quality bucking bulls are worth $20 000- $60 000...they have private massage therapists, recieve regular medical care..vaccinations, hoof trimming, anti parisitic treatments...that is far more then the average backyard pet horse recieves!
Better chance of finding abusive living conditions for livestock on hobby farms and acreages, where well meaning city folks get livestock to keep as pets, killing them with kindness by not utilizing proper animal husbandary practices through good old fashion ignorance ( which is under knowledged, BTW)
Just my professional opinion!

road rage on motorbikes
Posted:
5/19/2007 9:54:18 AM
Have to agree with no cyclists on Deerfoot...it is posted as no slow moving vehicles, I believe...so any vehicle that is unable to keep up with the posted speed limit is off limits, even if legally considered a "vehicle" and entitled to one full lane of the road..including cyclists, horses, farm machinary, etc...
OT- I have ridden motor bikes of all descriptions for many years. It is just lack of common sense to speed in and out through traffic....not to mention illegal. I don't think the earlier poster ment that car doors will open on purpose to crash a bike, but it does unintentionally happen. Feel bad for the biker...maybe...feel bad for the small child that opened the door and was also killed?? Most definately!
Yes, these bikes CAN go fast...as fast as the driver tells them to....but please, please, be considerate of the general public....appropriate times and places, people!

We did a school group ride, and one of the 13 year olds asked me to be his "date" for the Ozzie concert with him and his friends! His friends thought it would be cool because then no ones Mom would have to drive them!

I know it is plenty early, but are any there going to be any POF Get Togethers happening around the same time as the Tall Ships being in port in July? I have had a look through the forums, perhaps I missed something...but the mud sliding looked like a hoot!
There are some Alberta POFer's going to be in town then, and we are always looking to meet others! Kidlets will be along, so family friendly events would be welcome!

friends after dating

I have stayed friends with many of the men I have dated. I went out with them because I liked them and thought they were good people. There are a few instances where they were not what they represented themselves to be ( which goes for some female aquantances as well!), so therefore we are no longer friendly.
But in the instances where we were just not compatable as a couple? Absolutely!
As for being with a man who can't accept these friendships....they don't know me and don't trust me, and should just move along!

Sounds like fun..but not equipt at present.
I googled Mclean Creek and it would be close enough to town for a day trip. Is the area you are headed accessable by car? Might be fun to head out for the BBQ and aftermath stories....

Go to the fish market ( I think there is one in Willow Park...) buy it and take it home ! That's always best....nobody looks at you funny at home when the butter from the lobster is dripping off your chin !

Do you know your neighbours?

I also live in a Co- Operative...I know most of my neighbors, by face, location, dogs and kids if not by name!
A group of local teenagers actually showed up on my doorstep and helped me move in!
We often get together for tea or coffee, share the occasional meal or movie night, as well as sharing shoveling/mowing duties. We know when someone is not well or having hard times. It is great knowing that there are other eyes watching out for not just my child, but all the kids in the neighborhood that seem to congregate around our place.
^^^^ As mentioned above, it is nice to have that feeling of security and sense of community....it is an added bonus that I have neighbors that I trust to have a key to my place, who are OK with it ( and happy for me!)if I call late at night to let the dog out if I don't get home as planned
on a Non- Mommy night!

Doesn't really bother me if people care to "interpret" my actions without really knowing me or the truth about the situation.
Besides...if they are talking about me, they are leaving everybody else alone!

Is there anybody else interested in the wagon option? I have my gaffer that weekend, and would love to bring him out...if not, I might just check and see if we could just show up for the grub and stories......

Is there some sort of big golf tournie that the boys are looking forward too?
And the penalties??? Does anybody know what is going on? Early spring, yard work to do? hummmm? Any suggestions???
