A new amnesty bill? How many times will this happen?
Posted: 11/14/2009 5:04:03 AM
It's a better deal for them to become legal with no fuss and start paying taxes than for us to pay to ship them back to wherever they came from or imprison them. I don't really have a problem with amnesty as long as it's not extended to those who commit crimes besides illegally immigrating.

The atomic model of man...
Posted: 10/24/2009 11:24:39 AM

That the atoms you were born with aren't the same ones you have now. If this is true, than how is it we remain who we are?

You're the same as when you were born? I think you're probably quite different now. You're probably even different than you were 5 years ago. People change with time, they learn new things, they change their opinions on subjects, and they change physically. Just because you have the memories of your previous self doesn't mean that you haven't changed since then, you're the same person but that doesn't mean that you're the same. I'd use a car as an analogy, if you replace parts in a car, it's still the same car but it could very well run differently than it did when the old parts were still there.

when you're sick.. when you (as a man) battle a cold
Posted: 9/25/2009 4:48:04 AM
I've noticed two types of guys when it comes to being sick. Some are great big babies who want someone to be their mommy and take care of them hand and foot, and some are tough guys who'd rather tough it out by themselves.

Isn't caring, nurturing and nursing you back to health precisely what your woman would be for?

No, that's what a nurse or doctor is for, the woman is for companionship when he's feeling up to it.

but if NOT your woman, who IS supposed to take care of you when you're sick?

He takes care of himself.

Would you repeatedly say to her "don't come" and still expect her to show up?

No, if she showed up after I specifically told her not to I'd be annoyed.

This is how I lost my job folks, what do you think?
Posted: 9/14/2009 4:42:02 AM
So being a counselor and working at the fitness center are two separate jobs with separate paychecks? It sucks that you got fired from being a counselor, but they did have an excuse to do so, maybe not a good one, but still. Being fired from the fitness jobs sounds like a lawsuit though.

First date/meet. Need help please!
Posted: 8/29/2009 3:35:23 PM

I say something along the lines of "I wouldn't mind continuing this. I'll call you." She says Ok or something and 'I'll talk to you later' and we split.

You said you'd call her and she said ok, so now you're supposed to call her and see if she's interested in another date. You only need to post to see what you did wrong if you already called her and she wasn't interested.

Anime Fans
Posted: 8/28/2009 5:08:37 PM

Any die hard bleach fans here?

Until recently I would have said Bleach is eh, ok. It was mildly annoying when out of the blue everyone could fly and stand in the sky without any explanation, it's plausible since they're in spirit form, but they never explained it at all. Recently though it's been getting really good though with the current "zanpakuto" storyline (fansubs, the dubbed is probably farther behind).

Suggestions/places to network for friends only

Joining a group that has a different "agenda" is actually the best way to go about it. The key is to join one that has an agenda that you like (you mention that you're not religious, so church wouldn't be the choice for you), that way the other members automatically have one thing in common with you before you even talk to them. Find a group that pertains to a hobby or something that you're interested in.

3 days... worth starting something?
Posted: 8/20/2009 5:04:03 AM

It's about experience and sexual ability and attraction, that's all. I have reason to believe that in my past guys have thought I wasn't that into them, when actually I was just inexperienced and awkward in bed.

I just think guys these days tend to have certain standards for female performance in bed.

If you're so worried about being inexperienced, there's only one way to fix that, and that's to get some experience. Have your little fling, if something more comes in the future then good for you, if not then at least you had a fun fling for 3 days.

I don't do it personally, though I'm a fan in general, and especially of Tim Burton's stuff (and since you're working with an armature it sounds like you're doing the same type). While you probably know some of the techniques in there, you might want to watch the extras in the DVDs, there's often some "making of" segments that you might be able to pick up a trick or two from. I saw Coraline recently, and there were some pretty good making of segments that might be of use to you.

He lives with another woman and wants to explain
Posted: 8/12/2009 5:41:37 AM
My advice is to see if he's willing to have her explain for him. If she's willing to tell you that they're not sleeping together and confirms the rest of his story, then take him back, let him come to your place instead of going to his/hers. If he's not willing to let you talk to her or tells you that she doesn't want to, then he's full of it and you shouldn't have anything more to do with him. Give him the chance, since you two clicked so well in every other way, it'd be a shame to throw it away before you knew for sure.

Need a guys opinion
Posted: 8/11/2009 5:04:11 AM
It's not uncommon for single guys to live in less than appealing places that aren't very suitable for entertaining guests. You might ask him to let you visit it once, just to satisfy your curiosity, and after seeing it you'll probably understand why he'd rather visit you. He might be a little resistant due to embarrassment, but if he's completely unwilling to let you visit his place once, then he might be hiding something, like a wife.

My car was stolen
Posted: 8/7/2009 9:36:23 PM

Hey John, did you call the police to see if maybe it was sitting in an impound lot?

That happened to me once. I had a long weekend off work and nothing to do, so I enjoyed being lazy all weekend and not going out at all. My car was parked right in front of my apartment (there were no driveways, you were supposed to park in the street). Well apparently, I had "abandoned" my car right there in it's usual parking spot, so the police and tow truck guys stole it and ransomed it back to me. This was in Columbus Ohio, they're notorious for doing that kinda thing there, but I was never once pulled over for speeding by the Columbus police even though I gave them plenty of opportunities.

the atlantien power crystal
Posted: 8/5/2009 5:06:56 PM
Regarding Atlantis, I don't believe they were some super society with crystal powered flying cars and such. The most likely place according to the archaeological information I've seen is what we now call the "Minoan" culture. They were a very advanced civilization for their time. They were as advanced as ancient Egypt before Egypt was that advanced. When their civilization was destroyed by a volcano, many theorize that survivors went to Egypt and Greece and jump-started their civilizations which were also advanced for their time.

About crystals specifically... eh, there might be more to them than science has discovered so far, but I doubt it's anything so spectacular as the new age stories make it seem like.

slowing light down
Posted: 7/31/2009 11:14:35 AM
Depending on the properties of whatever substance is being used to slow down light, perhaps it could be done in a large cylinder made of something transparent like glass. As the light creeps along the cylinder, any light that refracts into the sides of the cylinder containing the beam would resume normal speed, allowing you to see how quickly it's moving through the cylinder with the naked eye.

The Bouncer

The ball would deform upon impact each time it hit the floor. Eventually that deformation would be greater than the height of the bounce, at which point the ball would just sit there and throb slightly until the cat got hold of it.

This is the answer, but even in some kind of hypothetical frictionless vacuum where the ball wouldn't deform on impact it would still eventually stop. Once the bounce gets to the size of the planck length it can't be halved.

Braille on drive-up ATMS and other foolishness

The real reason that there is braille on drive up machines is because they use the same buttons as the walk up machines, it would cost more to make two different sets of buttons solely for the purpose of preventing blind people from using the drive-ups.

Cops Suspended for Unauthorized Background Check on the President
Posted: 7/31/2009 8:29:55 AM

Public records? Are you hearing voices in your head?

No, I'm seeing words on my screen... Did you read raxarsr's post that you responded to?

so your theory is any numbnut cop with nothing to do should be able to access police records to check up on anybody he wants? or is it just the president? how about the vice-president? how about a senator? or maybe a representative? under secretary? security detail? maid service? you?

slippery slope there.

Not just numbnut cops, but you and me should be able to access public records, hence the term "public". Yes to the VP, senators, reps... any elected official. Slippery slope is a weak argument. What if there was a big pile of gold half-way down a literal "slippery slope", do you just leave it there because it's slippery or are you just extra careful?

That = game, it's called fishing for compliments. You're not saying something sweet to him because you feel something sweet for him, you're saying something sweet because you want something sweet in return. It's not one of the worst games, but it is one.

Cops Suspended for Unauthorized Background Check on the President

While I don't think that people should abuse their power against regular citizens, when someone becomes a public figure, especially someone in an important govt office, background information should be public knowledge. Joe the plumber is a private citizen who happened to stumble into the spotlight for a minute, I don't think that's enough to make him a public figure. It's not about parties though, were the parties reversed I'd feel the same way. We should all be able to do a background check on Obama, if McCain won we should be able to do one for him too (actually since he's still a senator, we should still be able to), had Ron Paul somehow miraculously been elected we probably would be able to.

Us and our ancient ancestors. Are our genes capable of remembering them?
Posted: 7/30/2009 4:47:35 AM
Are you talking about "ancestral memory" or physical features? If you're talking about memories, there's nothing proven in science, though there's a bit of anecdotal evidence that overlaps with reincarnation theories. If you're talking about physical features then yes, there are two brothers who do the trapeze who are completely covered in hair, their faces too (and it's not just beards). Seems like a primordial throwback to me, here's a pic...

dating a co-worker
Posted: 7/29/2009 5:09:52 AM
There's two important things to consider here. First, are you her boss? If you are then it's not a good idea to date, because that can possibly lead to problems, either sexual harassment if it doesn't work out, or other employees claiming favoritism. The second thing, is it a great job that you're lucky to have, or is it a pretty mediocre job that pays the bills and that's about it. The reason this needs to be considered is because if you two date, sooner or later one of you is likely to give up their job. If you're not the boss and it's not a great job then go for it, but cautiously.

Clockwise or Counter-clockwise?
Posted: 7/27/2009 5:01:12 PM
My understanding of it is that it does have an effect, but it's not the only or strongest effect. When you did your experiment, even though you waited for it to visibly stop swirling, it was still swirling, just not visibly anymore (unless you put some sort of dye into the water to see?) If you had a perfectly round sink, with a perfectly centered drain, that perfectly unseals all the way around at the same time, and you don't mess with the water beforehand, you'd get results perfectly consistent with the coriolis effect. If you start adding variables, the coriolis effect will quickly be overwhelmed by the other influences.

What type of religion is it?
Posted: 7/27/2009 5:22:41 AM
If you are in fact talking about Jehovah's witnesses, then no, they are certainly not a more open minded version of protestantism. They are one of the stricter sects of christianity, and considered by most sects to be barely christian, similar to how the mormons are viewed. You might want to look up the "Unitarian/Universalist" church, that sounds like it might be more your style, they're much more open minded than most churches when it comes to dogma.

Psychology - Are flame wars triggered by hate, or love
Posted: 7/23/2009 5:03:51 AM
I don't start troll posts, I don't really start new threads at all, but I do enjoy getting in on a good debate. There's two reasons for me personally, I'm opinionated and usually right so I think people should be enlightened to the truth, and also I just like debating. I often play devils advocate and even take the opposite side from what I actually think (more so with friends than on here).

I try very hard not to post out of hate. There are a couple of people who really bother me personally (one in particular lately, but I won't name her), bordering on hate, their willful ignorance and hypocrisy just really piss me off. I don't reply when someone's posts makes me feel that way but I see others who do. Since I know where they're coming from, since I'm resisting the urge to do the same thing, I'd say those posters who respond to those sorts of people are coming from a place of hate.

I think the best way to tell where someone's coming from is if they're sticking to the subject, or just attacking the poster directly.

People are always trying to 'win' arguements, neatly assuring themselves that they never learn anything and thus ultimately lose.

You make a valid point, people involved in a debate are rarely willing to consider changing their position, if they weren't sure of themselves they wouldn't be willing to debate the topic. However, even if neither side changes their mind or learns anything, the lurking readers who might be on the fence on a subject might be able to learn from the exchange, getting a good view of both sides.

Posted: 7/22/2009 7:13:52 AM
Some people like to meet right away and see if there's chemistry, some people like to chat online longer and learn about each other before meeting. Since you're so shy, maybe you'd be better off taking the second approach and message back and forth longer. That way you'll feel a little more comfortable when you meet since you kind of know him already and you'll have given him something to work with besides silence.

Posted: 7/22/2009 6:39:34 AM
It's not about "putting out almost straight away", it's about your reasons behind it. You have self esteem issues and that's what's causing your problems. Self esteem/confidence is an attractive trait in a person, more important than physical looks sometimes, and a guy is more likely to like you if you like yourself. Whether it's learning to like yourself as you are, or changing who you are until you like yourself, you really should try to deal with that.
