NFL Playoffs-Falcons @ Cardinals 1/3/09

Trying to look at it logically, so let's see, after the bye week, Atlanta went to Philly and got thumped. Philly thumps Arizona 6 or 8 weeks later on a short week. Minny goes to Zona and tears them a new one and then Atlanta goes into Minny and pounds the crap out of them the next week.

Logic tells me Falcons. But then again, lots to this season has been anything but logical. I took the Cards to cover. They're slumpin but I think Edgerrin James may have p1ssed his teammates off enough earlier this week with his comments, that they may just be and good browned off finally enough to get that offense untracked one more time.

Home dogs have been covering lots lately so actually i took all the home dogs except Minny. It's only money right? lol

Did anyone notice that Stan Makita looked twenty years younger than Ron McLean when he's actually probably about twenty years older? He looks terrific.

Sounds like the whole thing was a rounding success and Chicagotown got to have a blast on New Years day. Pretty good game I thought. Red Wings seem to flex their talent when they need to these days and then when they do it's like boom boom lights out. The NHL icemakers apparently came up with just some excellent ice for the game too after it kinda got wrecked about 36 hours before gametime.

^^^They did have a good squad. They're goaler was just brutal today and they pelted that Slovak goaler pretty good. They let that other one the other night get away on them against our lads. They could have won that one. I'm sure our guys are happy to see them ousted from the tourney.

Owners of the NFL’s best regular-season record (114-46) since the start of the 1999 season, while being the only team to earn nine playoff appearances in the last 10 seasons, Indianapolis has won 59 of its last 73 regular-season games.

The most overrated team so far this year in the NFL.
Posted: 1/2/2009 8:03:18 AM
Sports pundits usually get it wrong anyways. We know that from watching preseason picks in the NHL ever year. Last year half of the 8 teams in the east to make the playoffs were picked to finish out and the one team (Habs) that finished first was supposed to finish last according to sports analysts.

ODDS TO WIN SUPER BOWL XLIII (43)

Team Open Current
New York Giants 12/1 2/1
Tennessee Titans 30/1 4/1
Pittsburgh Steelers 18/1 9/2
Carolina Panthers 60/1 11/2
Indianapolis Colts 6/1 11/2
Philadelphia Eagles 45/1 13/1
San Diego Chargers 10/1 13/1
Baltimore Ravens 125/1 14/1
Atlanta Falcons 150/1 15/1
Minnesota Vikings 38/1 20/1
Miami Dolphins 150/1 30/1
Arizona Cardinals 45/1 40/1

http://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/odds/futures/

^^^I don't know if this copy paste thing will work properly. Cowboys and Patriots were odds on favorites to meet in this years SuperBowl. Cowboys were 3 to 1 and Pats were 2 to 1 odds back when everyone's record was 0-0.

On the most winning team this decade:
Owners of the NFL’s best regular-season record (114-46) since the start of the 1999 season, while being the only team to earn nine playoff appearances in the last 10 seasons, Indianapolis has won 59 of its last 73 regular-season games.

http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=2f89f735-d233-438d-a7ec-ba9444c51152

One more intersting little tidbit about the Colts:

The Colts set an NFL record this season by allowing six touchdown passes in a 16-game season. The previous fewest allowed was nine by Denver in 1978 and Pittsburgh in 1990. . . . Manning tied Drew Bledsoe for fifth on the all-time list for completions (3,839). . . . Manning also tied Joe Montana for sixth place in NFL history with his 117th career victory.

Shanahan gets 20 mill on three years left on his contract. 14 years is a longtime to be at one place coachng a pro team. I don't see him rushing off to take a new job too quick. Probably wants to unwind a bit and has 20 million reasons to sit around and enjoy his 35000 sq ft home there in Denver till the right situation comes along for him.

Jerod Mayo firmly answered everyone who criticized the Patriots for taking him with the 10th pick in April's draft by winning The Associated Press 2008 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award..leading the team in tackles.
Mayo was a nearly unanimous choice, earning 49 of 50 votes

Hagman on rare pace
"""...Niklas Hagman could perform a rare feat by an imported Leaf. Of the 50 players who'd had at least 20 goals when Toronto acquired them as free agents or in trades since 1990, Hagman would be just the 13th to get 20 as a Leaf. Hagman had a career high 27 with Dallas last season.

The others to make it are Mike Gartner, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Derek King, Alex Mogilny, Glenn Anderson, Dave Andreychuk, Kirk Muller, Jeff O'Neill, Gary Roberts, Igor Korolev and Darcy Tucker.

Those who didn't, to name a few, were Jason Allison, Bates Battaglia, Shayne Corson, Sylvain Cote, John Cullen, Mariusz Czerkawski, Dave Ellett, Mike Foligno, Ron Francis, Dave Gagner, Travis Green, Brian Leetch, Dmitry Khristich, Eric Lindros, Larry Murphy, Owen Nolan, Mike Peca, Matheiu Schneider, Dixon Ward, Terry Yake, Peter Zezel, and so far, Jason Blake, Lee Stempniak and Mark Bell.

Cujo chalked up his 450th win last night against Atl. Once we were down 2 nuthin' I knew we had 'em right where we wanted 'em. lol. I think the leafs are gonna set a record this year for going down 2-0 in the first period of games. Watch for Nicky Kulemin to kick it up a notch in the 2nd half and put a run on for RookieOfYear.

On the Roddy Brindamour watch, he had opened up a ten point lead on the next worst plus minus, but Brad Boyes is dogging him for the distinction. Minus 26 for Rod the bod still leading the league at pretty close to the midpoint in the season. Phillips, Vermette and Volchenkov really working as a team concept there for the Sens with three spots in the worst ten.

Shanahan Fired-Next Stop In Dallas???
Posted: 12/31/2008 9:52:04 AM
Reading some of the blogs down there last nite, there's folks that are suggesting Shanny had an alternate agenda in refusing yesterday to fire some of his assistants as the owner Bowlen had suggested in their meeting Monday. Rumours down there have him sniffing around some job that may be opening up in SD?

Wouldn't that be bizarre? Shanny in SD and Orange Martyball in Denver?

Let that be a lesson to all coaches everywhere. Don't ever be so wild and crazy to lose 7 running backs in one season.

"""...Romo and Roy Williams.."""

If they could work together well, it could be an exceptional tandem, similar to what they have in arizona. Then with the nice progress of Choice and a healthy Felix and Marion, Cowboys could have their own version of earth wind and fire for a serious ground game. If that offense ever gets clicking on all cylinders next year, it could be downright lights out. Lots of talent there...

"""...THE END..""'

Almost. A lot of things went right for the Dolphins. As a matter of fact, almost anything that could go right went right. Porter played like he was born again. Ricky bogart played like he was born again; Ronny Brown finally had the season he's been prepping 3 years to have. Pennington played like he was born again. And Parcells retooled about 65% of the roster. Fish had an awfully soft schedule and made the most of it. Next year they go head to head with the NFC east i believe.

The wildcat was brought in to cover up bad deficiencies in the offensive line after the cardinals dismantled us out in arizona. Sparano got p1ssed about that game and put them all back in pads for practice starting getting ready for the Pats game.
Fish didn't have a starter hurt until about week 12.

A lot went right for them.

If everyone keeps jumping on the ravens i might have to go against the crowd and take the Dolphins this weekend.

But, I have a feeling this will be a case of two steps forward, one step back, now that Huizenga will close the sale of his club as soon as the Dolphins finish playing. We've seen it before. browns this year, the saints the last two years..
Thanks for the great season nonetheless.

"""... But seriously Phillips shoulda learned that his coaching style WASN'T WORKING.... and tried a new approach..."""

Call it a hunch, but I'd bet even if Wade reincarnated himself into a combo of Tom Landry, Jimmy AND the Big Tuna, he couldn't make a silk purse out of these sow's ears. Seriously. That's probably one of the main reasons why Parcells left. He wanted Owens on his football team about as much as any of us want to get herpes. The guy's a cancer to team concepts, and alien to the success principle of teamwork. Parcells knew he was going nowhere with Romo and Owens and he didn't want to be around these guys. His jaw hit the floor when Romo was selected to the proBowl two years ago, and still to this day, i don't believe he refers to Owens by name.

But it looks like you'll get a different Wade next year. Maybe i'm wrong. Maybe that's all it'll take to fix this disfunctional bunch. Anybody feel like making a bet on that?

Anyway, Short video talkin' about getting rid of some cancer from a ballclub that's riddled with it:

Big change in Big D?

http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80dc019b
============

And for those pleading for Wade to change his ways:

"""Phillips vows new plan

"""...You can't say, 'Well, OK, everything's going to be all right,' because it's not going to be all right if you do the same thing and I'm talking about myself," Phillips said. "I have to look at myself from how I deal with things, from how we have training camp, how we have practices, whatever."
... All he's decided so far is that he needs a plan; he's only started putting it together....

The big change Phillips seems to be talking about is getting tough, a la previous Dallas coaches Bill Parcells and Jimmy Johnson. That would be quite a change for a 61-year-old man whose reputation as a players' coach has been forged over 32 seasons in the NFL...

...One change Phillips already made was opting not to address the team Monday. Players met with position coaches, cleaned out their lockers, tied up other loose ends and were free to go.

Linebacker Bradie James, a defensive team captain, didn't like that change. "I don't want to just end this thing and be in the dark," James said. So James had to hear from reporters that Phillips is plotting a new approach. Asked if that will work, James smiled wide and said, "If you know a person to be a certain way and then all of a sudden you have an extreme change, I don't know how well that's going to be taken. I don't know what he means by that. Like I said, he didn't address us, so I don't know. ... Whatever needs to be done, I'm all for it...."

...James turned out to be the most high-profile player to step up in front of cameras Monday. The only others were linebacker Zach Thomas, receiver Roy E. Williams and rookie running back Tashard Choice, all whom were in their first season in Dallas and thus have less perspective about what went wrong.

James' take: "There were a lot of personalities put on this team and we didn't jell. We didn't find a way to jell. This past game, you could see it. When you know you've got something on the line and you're playing to go into the playoffs, you know what you have to do, and you go out there and stink it up like that? That just speaks for itself."

"We didn't really get to our full potential," Thomas said. "We were inconsistent all year. I don't understand it, but that's something for them to fix. I mean, they've got a great organization here, a lot of great players. Something's missing. I'm hoping they find out because Jerry Jones deserves it, Wade deserves it...."""""

"""..hmmm you'd of thought he woulda learned from experience that it WASN'T WORKING VERY WELL..."""

It does work well, if or when you're dealing with men. But 'men' don't stand around pointing fingers at one another on national tv and beyond in their interviews, after every tough loss. All the oars have to be pulling in the same direction. Bill Walsh managed his men in very much the same manner Wade Phillips does. The self-discipline and the dynasty of the 49'ers came from within the locker room as the players refused to let each other down. The Ronnie Lott's and the Joe Montana's and the Roger Craigs and the Jerry Rice's had the teamwork principle down. Cowboys are at the far far other end of that spectrum.

Problem is, Jerry Jones has thrown his wallet around and brought in a bunch of high-priced talented monkeys, and they perform like high-priced individual monkeys. Make no mistake. The monkeys are running the zoo there and all they're doing is making a big mess of the zoo. Not because of Phillipps. They can't help it half these guys. They're monkeys. They're not pro's. Phillips would be smart to follow Parcell's cue and exit stage left....Leave it to the the world's richest offensive co-ordinator to deal with.

brett favre...should he just retire already?
Posted: 12/29/2008 4:08:24 PM
I wouldn't blame it all on the ole gunslinger. Jets playbok was very questionable in a number of games this year including the Niners game a couple of weeks back. bad calls by Mangini in the seattle game is another example. Money and stuff aside, it must be hard for a guy to bleed Packer green and yellow all those years and then start all new in NY this year.

I doubt he played with all the old Brett Favre heart a lot of us have come to appreciate, but the Jet's just weren't going to be his team. The guy's a packer at heart and probably always will be no matter how much dough you pay a guy. I'm glad they chucked out that coach today, but you could tell looking at Mangini yesterday that he'd pretty much had the biscuit with Brett this year. That first pick yesterday was just brutal and everyone in the park knew it including mangini as you could see him asking on his headset, ""why in the world would somebody make that pass?" I'm sure there was a lot of chemistry missing at the end, but brett deserves some of the credit and some of the blame..

Their receivers aren't apparently fast enough to get open consistently, and Mangini ignored a strong running game, or Favre did, or both of them did, on a number of Sundays.

To stack it all up just straight up against Rogers or Pennington isn't totally fair. It's still a team game. Dolphins are having a storybook season, and for my money, my guess would be the Packers, banged up Defense and all, would have found a way to 10-6 with Favre at the helm. I know all the fantasy leagues will tell you different when it comes to Rodgers, but as far as i know, there's no fantasy points for leadership.

I'll give him a pass on the whole season. Meh, he should have stayed retired and then come back this next year after letting his body heal up. His timing on his announcements frigged his whole year up by screwing up a franchise management's plans, but hey, he's always shot from the hip and so that's the way it went down. He'll still wind up in the HoF, but he definitely should pass off his proBowl selection this year to Cassell, or Rivers or even the unmentioned AFC MVP, Pennington.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him come back for one more.

"""...1) Fire Wade Phillips and the whole coaching staff..""'

I'd be surprised if Wadester keeps his job but to me the first guy that should be shipped out of there is that useless hugely over-paid and underproductive, offensive co-ordinator. I'm not a Wade Phillips fan at all except for the fact that i thought his dad was a good coach, but In Phillips defence, he tries to treat men like men with the belief that if you treat men like men, they'll actually go out and perform like men.

Babcock of the RedWings treats his men like men. Dungy treats his men like men. Cowboys are one awfully disfunctional team that is just plain, missing 'men'. Romo is still just a boy in a man's body. Wade phucked up last year letting that clown go to mexico with his chick in the middle of a bye week last year. That's all you needed to tell me about Romo. No more info required. Priorities of an adolescent teen-idol.
Until or unless that kid ever grows up and also grows a spine, Cowboys aren't going anywhere.

They made me just a small ton of money yesterday. Thanks Romo. Thumbs up! I knew i could count on him underachieving. Enjoy your holidays!

Yep congrats to Donavon and Reid and Westbrook and the rest of them and their fans. So in 10 years now Reid and McNabb have gotten to the playoffs 7 times i think. Most successful ten years in Eagles history if I'm not mistaken. Makes ya just wanna run 'em out of town don't it?

Going on points rather than yardage, Eagles sport the 5th best offense and the 4th best D. I see them headed to the Meadowlands two weeks from now for a rubber match with bigblue..

Ya they did good. Real good. Good team concept thing going there. Bit of a soft schedule but great story nonetheless. Anything at this point is just bonus, but I'd be looking at the Ravens as 7 point faves here. Ravens have played meaner teams than we have and they've played 'em pretty tough.

If it's true that Parcells is the brains behind it all then the Dolphins may have to enjoy it while it lasts. Tuna had a clause put in his contract with Huizenga the owner if he ever sells the franchise, Parcells has the option of taking a full payout on his contract and can walk away paid in full. Huizenga's scheduled to close the sale of the team in late january, so maybe the big tuna will be heading off somewhere else. who knows.

Meh, i'm happy Pennington had his day. I'd even bet there were a few Jets players that were happy to see him get his day of redemption. He was always a likeable guy. Good to see guys like him get to stick the knife in and give it a good twist every now and again.

I dunno how long they'll be around in the playoffs though with that Ravens D coming to town, but they'll give 'em a game for sure. Last time Dolphins were in the playoffs they lost to the ravens 20-3 or something like that. That might have been the year the Ravens went all the way. Dolphins still have that Cam Cameron remark to try and settle up from earlier in the year. Ravens are gonna be a load for sure.

Good job by your Pats wiz. Lots of folks wrote them off the minute Brady went down, and you guys lost more than just Brady along the way. It was neat watching Matt Cassell come along. Kind of a shame they don't get to keep playing. They played tough all season. Belichek's unreal the way he keeps things together.

Not bad at all indeed.

Dolphins made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes in the first half, but came out relatively unscathed. Good teams don't beat themselves and they were beating themselves in the first half. She's a nailbiter. We need another pic from favre.

omg, they're showing a runback in Philly for 41-3 now. I gave up flipping back and forth. Apparently Romo has just fumbled again.

Neat story for the holiday season. Folks getting to forget about some of their own problems when united in a common cause.

INGRID PERITZ
Globe and Mail Update
December 25, 2008 at 8:42 PM EST

It was just a week before Christmas when two starving horses were discovered in the rugged mountains of the B.C. Interior – hip bones protruding, backs blanketed in ice, weakened bodies teetering between life and death.

Logan Jeck, 21, came upon the pair while retrieving two tourists' snowmobiles in the snow-covered terrain. He went home and told his father, David. David Jeck, a horse owner, sent his daughter back the next day with two things: a .44 Magnum rifle and a bale of hay. “If they look like they're in distress, put them down,” Mr. Jeck instructed his daughter, Toni. “If they look like they're able to survive, feed them.”

The horses got the hay.

And the village of McBride got down to a made-in-Canada tale of animal rescue. Fighting snow, freezing cold and winter's early darkness, dozens of volunteers from around McBride pulled together to save the enfeebled, snow-trapped horses. They spent a week digging a kilometre-long passageway through towering snowdrifts and spirited out the three-year-old mare and older gelding. And on Tuesday night, two days before Christmas, the horses and their rescuers trekked seven hours down a Canadian mountain to safety.

The residents of McBride, a village hit hard by mill closings and job losses, gave time and sweat – and in several cases, suffered frostbite in the process – to save two animals abandoned in the snow. The horses, Sundance and Belle, were placed in foster care by the SPCA and are expected to recover.

“This was probably one of the most heartwarming displays of compassion we've ever seen,” Jamie Wiltse, a special constable for the B.C. SPCA, said yesterday from Kamloops. “The people of the town of McBride are heroes. They saved the horses. They've been struggling lately, but they weren't thinking of themselves when they were digging out those horses. “It just makes me choke up. It's a beautiful story, right before Christmas. It was totally selfless.”

It began when Logan Jeck happened upon the animals, clinging to a mountainside in a tiny snowed-in space on Mount Renshaw in northeastern B.C., near the Alberta border. They are believed to have been left there since September by their owner, an Albertan. At first, Mr. Jeck thought they were moose. Then he saw white markings on the forehead of one of the horses. “They were sick, disgusting-looking, starving horses,” he recalled yesterday.

The SPCA went in with a veterinarian a few days later to assess the animals' health. On a scale in which zero is death and the ideal measure is five or six, the animals' health was evaluated at two. Not only had they lost a third to half their body weight, but the gelding was covered in sores and was missing patches of hair. Urine had encrusted what remained of their tails.

Word of the trapped animals spread through the Robson Valley, and soon volunteers began to organize, hauling in blankets and hay, and melting snow over open fires to provide water. Donations began to pour in for the volunteers to cover fuel and other costs, some from as far as Vancouver and Edmonton. People such as horse trainer Birgit Stutz, travelled morning and night to reach the animals, venturing out even when the temperature dived to -40. “They didn't deserve to be left up there with no chance of getting out,” Ms. Stutz said. “I wanted them out and that's all I thought about, and that's all that kept me going.”

Rescuers considered several alternatives to free the horses from their snowy prison: Harnessing them up to a helicopter, pulling them out on sleds, even putting them on horse “snowshoes” so they could walk out.

In the end, they realized the only viable option was to dig a corridor through the snow. So they got down to what Canadians do at this time of year: Shovelling. It took nearly a week.

Constable Wiltse said the SPCA is investigating to determine if charges may be brought against the owner of the horses under provincial animal-cruelty laws. An Edmonton lawyer who told CTV News that he was the owner said the horses were delivering supplies to hikers on the mountain in September when he got separated from them. He said he returned three times to get the animals, twice getting stuck in the snow and finally, when he located them, unable to get them out of the snow. But the SPCA says there is a duty to at least alert authorities. “Even to humanely euthanize them would have been better than to let them starve or freeze to death,” Constable Wiltse said.

Residents of the Robson Valley, meanwhile, who sacrificed their own Christmas preparations to rescue the animals, say they are relieved they freed the horses in time. Ms. Stutz has been so busy she didn't have time to put up a Christmas tree or buy presents this year. “But this still seems like the best Christmas ever,” she said from her home in Dunster, B.C. “You realize these are the most important things in life – to help something that needs help.”

Couple of stories on the Gigantes since they are the champs, and it's Christmas day so here's a present for fans of champs. I know some of you's get ticked when folks copy paste a bunch of long stuff in the sports threads, but, well, tough tittie said the kittie. lol. Just kidding. Sometimes when you go back months later, the links are dead. And we know that a great number of football fans gain their insights and wisdoms from these threads right?

...It will be their 13th consecutive week of play since their bye week, and they might be able to rest some weary and injured regular players for as many as three weeks.

One of them is cornerback Aaron Ross, who spent Sunday night in a local hospital and was discharged Monday afternoon after sustaining a concussion. “He still has some blurriness,” Coughlin said. “He got dinged pretty good. They’re going to do all the psychological tests that a player has to pass before he can be cleared to practice.”

Among the hobbled Giants regulars are Jacobs (knee), wide receiver Domenik Hixon (ankle), right tackle Kareem McKenzie (back), defensive end Justin Tuck (leg), nose tackle Barry Cofield (knee) and defensive tackle Fred Robbins (shoulder).

In addition, the veteran middle linebacker Antonio Pierce has looked a step slow in the last few weeks in pass and run coverage....

...Their pass rush, a strength in the first half of the season, had another ineffective night. They did not sack Jake Delhomme and rarely pressured him.

“I think you are concerned whenever the quarterback is able to stand back there and throw the ball without having to be disrupted,” Coughlin said. “We would like to have all areas of our defense being productive. We did not have that.

Bill Parcells is protective of the NFL turnover record his 1990 New York Giants set en route to winning the Super Bowl.

Parcells was the head coach when the Giants had only 14 turnovers, the lowest regular-season total in league history. Now he's executive vice president with the Miami Dolphins, who have 12 turnovers with one game left. When offensive coordinator Dan Henning learned a couple of weeks ago that the Dolphins were on pace to break the record, he couldn't resist teasing Parcells.

"Being the prankster that I am, I went up to this gentleman and said, `Did you see this stat that we're in line to have the least turnovers in history?"' Henning said Wednesday. "`Yeah, I know,' he said. `But it's still not going to count, because we did it with 19 games and went to the Super Bowl.'

"You think he's not competitive? That record is important to him."

For the record: The Giants had one turnover in the postseason, giving them 15 total...

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/11190972
============================

... The question now is: Considering everything that's at stake, how will the New York Giants approach their game with Minnesota?

Answer: However Tom Coughlin chooses.

That is his right. He won the NFC East. He has a first-round bye. He has home-field advantage. So he can do what he wants to do. He can play his starters. He can rest his starters. He can play his starters one quarter, or he can play them one half. He can play them four quarters if he likes.

And whatever he does he is right.

I can already hear the caterwauling from Winnetka to Barrington, with outraged Chicago Bears' fans insisting that Coughlin has an obligation to play for keeps, to try to win a game that means so much to the Vikings and Bears.

After all, a playoff spot is at stake. If the Vikings win, they're in. If the Vikings lose, and Chicago wins, the Bears are in. It's as simple as that. So the Giants must, absolutely must, do whatever they can to win a game that is important to two teams -- if not for the Vikings and Bears, then for the integrity of the game.

Wrong.

The Giants must do what is in the best interest of the New York Giants, not the Minnesota Vikings and/or Chicago Bears. They have a raft of injured players, starting with cornerback Aaron Ross and running back Brandon Jacobs, and if Coughlin thinks by resting them he enhances his chances of going deep into the playoffs then he should.

Remember, this is a team that will play for the 13th straight week since a Sept. 28 bye, so Coughlin not only has injured players, he has tired ones, too.

He also has a quarterback who started every game, and it might be wise to have Eli Manning sit down for part or all of a game that means nothing to New York. I know the Vikings' chances for success improve with Manning's benching, but so what? Critics can bray, but imagine the outcry if Manning were hurt and sidelined for the playoffs.

I covered a San Francisco 49ers team in 1994 that won 10 straight entering its last game with playoff-bound Minnesota. The 49ers had clinched home-field advantage, so the only question entering the game was Steve Young setting a single-season record for passer rating. The 49ers had him play a quarter, then sat him down ... along with other starters.

They lost. Young set the record. And a month later the 49ers won Super Bowl XXIX.

If I were a Bears' fan I'd want Tom Coughlin to do what he could to beat the Vikings, too. But that's not Coughlin's job now. His job is to take care of the New York Giants and drive them as far and as long as he can. If he decides it's in the best interests of the club to play Manning four quarters he will. He did a year ago in the season ender with the Patriots, and it launched the Giants on a memorable Super Bowl run.

But the circumstances were different then. Coughlin was looking for a spark, something to wake up a club that lost as many as it won the second half of the season. And he found it, with the Giants taking the unbeaten Patriots to the mat before succumbing.

The point was made: If we meet these guys again, we can beat them. And they did.

Coughlin needs no such spark now. He found it against Carolina. Sure, the Giants lost two of their last three, but they won the game that mattered most -- and they did it with Jacobs back in the lineup.

That should tell Coughlin something. Without Jacobs, they ran for a season-low 72 yards against Dallas and were drilled. Then Jacobs returned to the lineup and scored three times, with teammate Derrick Ward running for a career-high 215 yards, the club shredding Carolina for a season-high 301 yards and the Giants winning.

Coughlin knows he must have a healthy Jacobs to reach the Super Bowl again. He knows he must allow Aaron Ross to recover from a concussion. And he knows he can't afford to have Manning sidelined by an injury that didn't have to happen.

In short, he knows that what he must do next is what he thinks is best for the Giants.

You would, too, if you were in his position. At the league meetings in March the NFL considered the idea of re-seeding teams to prevent clubs from tanking meaningless games late in the season. The idea was voted down, and I'll tell you why: Because coaches understand it's the playoffs, not the regular season; that counts more.

A year ago, Coughlin decided it was in the best interests of the Giants to play his starters through the 17th week. This year he might change his mind. Then again, he might not. It doesn't matter. All that matters is how his decision affects the New York Giants, not the NFC North.

And that is how it should be.

Sorry, Bears; Giants have their own interests to consider

Ok. Enough of the bullsh1t. Here's some picks:

1. It's only Thursday, and i've been known to change my mind as the week goes on, but i think I'm going with Houston to flat-out beat da Bears. I've had a soft spot for the Bears ever since the days of Walter and later with the Monsters of the Midway, but man they're tough to watch this year. Too bad that qb stretched that ankle instead of just busting it. He hasn't been the same qb since, but when all you have is sexy rexy back there as backup, i can see why Lovie chooses to go with a one-legged qb.

The hurricane caused the Texans to win the hardluck team of the year award with their schedule being thrown all out of whack the very first week. Not too often do i say this, but for this club, it is definitely a case of wait till next year. They will be in the playoffs next year. Two screwed up endings to games early in the season and too many qb turnovers, but apart from that, this club is definitely headed in the right direction.

They're not going to lose their home finale after what that club and that city has been thru. 27-17 Texans.

2.Sparano and the hanging Chad will manage the game clock effectively for 60 minutes and outcoach the J-E-T-S, jets to a 20-17 victory. Brett Favre meet Joey Porter.

3. New England obliterates the Bills. I can't bear to watch that one. 38-10

4. Singletary's 9'ers give him a 5 and 4 record to close out with a win over the bickering Redskins. Keeping in mind 49'ers controlled the clock for 40 minutes and completely shut down my fish in the 2nd half a couple of weeks back, plus they completely fecked up their last minute on the Monday niter when they were driving to beat the Cards, they win the "we coulda bin a contender" award. Singletary coaching there next year should be a nobrainer. Niners 20-9

5. Falcons gear up on the Rams. 35-10

Those are my five best picks i think, but i also have only 3.5 to cover in my book if i want the Viqueens, but you's have spooked me off that one for now so i'll kick that one around for another day or so.

I think the Chargers are going to run herd over the Bronco's. Sorry Broncs. This game shouldn't have meant anything but now it means tons, and that's not good for a club with 7 running backs injured. Too many weapons for SD while Rivera's LB's can sit back and wait for Cutler to throw early and often. This one could be a real pasting. 44-17 maybe?

I can't make up my mind on the TB game. Monte Kiffens last game could mean that banged up TB defence pitches a shutout and wins 17-0 or 17-3, but part of me thinks the Raiders will give them all they can handle and I just don't understand this huge spread. I'd take the Raiders and the points maybe.

Last game in Philly for John Runyan, Donavon and coach Reid? Doesn't matter. The vultures are circling. Romo has the sniffles, Cowboys haven't won a road season finale in over a decade and haven't won a season finale since '99 period. Eagles are a different club at home. 31-24 Eagles.

Most of the rest of the games are tough to figure out team's motivations so i think I'll stay away from them, but Tennessee's defensive depth plus a motivated Vince Young tells me the Titans take that one. Tony Dungy is one coach we know will rest his starters.
=======================
Another year has almost come and gone so another year older and theoretically another year wiser. What will we ever do with all this wisdom we have when it's time for us to leave this crazy comet?

Best wishes over the Holiday season to everyone and their loved ones for a safe, prosperous and healthy holiday time.

All the best for 2009!
Hoping it's your best year ever.

Well crazy, maybe they will play it out. Lovie Smith expects him to. Plus they get a chance to go in the history books if Ward gets 52 yards rushing:

"""In the history of the NFL, three teams have had two running backs rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.

Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris did it for the undefeated Miami Dolphins in 1972. Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier each hit the K-mark for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976, and Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack each ran for 1,000 yards for Cleveland in 1985.

The New York Giants are on the verge of joining the club heading into the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings with Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward - two players who will be free agents at the end of the season.

Jacobs, who has battled a sore left knee most of the season, already has 1,089 yards. Ward is 52 from reaching 1,000 yards after gaining a career-best 215 yards (15 carries) in Sunday night's 34-28 overtime victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The Atlanta Falcons also had a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in 2006 with halfback Warrick Dunn and quarterback Michael Vick....

...The Giants can make it easy for Ward. They could decide to give Jacobs an extra week off to rest his knee and give Ward the majority of carries.
Don't expect that.
Coach Tom Coughlin plans on playing to win. So if Jacobs is given the OK by the doctors, he'll be in the lineup...."""

We'll see crazy. The two seasons are different. They did need to play that last one last year for a number of reasons. They couldn't allow the long Giants tradition to be the club that let a team go undefeated without a fight for it. But they also knew they could beat the Pats after they played them that night, and that's what Coughlin wanted his club to find out for themselves. That was the whole catalyst to their playoff march. Briliant coaching by Coughlin. Years down the road it will be recognized for the sheer coaching brilliance that it was having his men suit up for that one. They became believers that night.

This year's different. They're banged up from playing something like 10 straight weeks of plus 500 football clubs while trying to get back to the top of the heap again another year. They've had a great season apart from the little hiccup there after losing Plaxico. They've beaten who they've had to beat to get to where they are now and that's a testament to the club he's put on the field this year. They don't need this last game as anything more than rest.

Giants dominated that 2nd half the other night, but if that Panthers club comes back north in a month for the NFC Championship, Coughlin knows that one was too close for comfort the other night. He'll give his men some well deserved and probably much-needed, but definitely much-appreciated, rest.

I know he's a bit of a maniac, but i don't see him being wreckless. I'll be very surprised if he plays his starters after the 1st Q. No need to. Nothing to gain and tons to lose.

After the opening series, Coughlin, should be resting everybody that's played a full season, and anybody else that's hurtin'. Bears fans won't like it, but Bears problems aren't Coughlin's. Resting the bodies for two weeks is just huge right now.

Ya, he is a stand up guy. Maybe he'll throw something in here about his old owner of his hockey club. They used to have the best hockey fans in the world and are finally starting to come back with the son running the club now.

""...As owner of the Blackhawks, Wirtz had a reputation for stubbornness and frugality.[3] He was vilified by Blackhawks fans for forbidding Blackhawks home games to be shown on TV unless they were picked up by national broadcasters, which only happened when the Blackhawks made the playoffs...

...Wirtz was also blamed for the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup drought, which is the longest in the NHL and the longest in team history.[3] Under the ownership of Wirtz, the Chicago Blackhawks were named by ESPN in 2004 as the worst franchise in sports.[6] Wirtz was also given the nickname "Dollar Bill" by Chicago Tribune columnist Bob Verdi as a sarcastic reference to his frugality in compensating his players.[5] ESPN has ranked Wirtz as the 3rd greediest owner in all of sports.[7]

...During a tribute and moment of silence for him during the Blackhawks home opener on October 8, 2007, the Chicago crowd displayed their displeasure with Wirtz's operation of the organization by booing the proceedings. [10]

Well if you're talking to them just tell them to look at the Chicago Blackhawks a year and ahalf now since the owner, old man Wirtz died. Leading the league in attendance and one of the hottest clubs in the league with tons of young talent. They booed him at his wake at the rink. His son took over and has done a great job bringing the Hawks back to a proud franchise. They got the outdoor game at Wrigley field coming in another week.

Haven't made one. it's only Tuesday morning. Saints are good at home and bad to me all year. Panthers have their hands full here. I'll wait and see what my new weatherman predicts. I stumbled on some guy last week giving weather forecasts for all the parks and his own picks to boot.

i looked them over and I liked most of them and thought what the hell, if you can't trust your weatherman...
Very scientific approach.
