What do Canadians think about American TV shows filmed in Canada?

Don't bother me at all!
What amazed me a few years ago when Arnie became governor of California he said that he wanted ALL filming brought back to California. He never mentioned that he had done a few movies filmed up here in Vancouver and got advantage of the tax breaks, too!

If a rock from Mars can be found on Earth, then why not a rock from Earth making it to the surface of Mars?
Unlikely unless the rock was given extremely energy by the collision. The problem is is that the Earth is further down the Sun's gravity well than Mars is. The projectile would have to overcome the force of gravity from Earth to Mars whereas in the opposite direction the projectile only has to 'fall' down a 'hole'.

Self-Taught Evolution
Posted:
12/9/2007 1:48:57 AM
PBS just recently had an excellant 2 hour show on one town in the US that was having "Intelligent Design" forced on it's grade 9 class. The court found that the Intelligent Design 'theory' was word for word of the Creationist Theory. Gee, go figure!
In a nutshell, the Intelligent Design 'theory' was found NOT to be a 'theory' at all, NOT scientific in anyway. The school was also banned from teaching any creationist theory of any kind. There was no appeal from the school board as they were all replaced by thinking persons who were against the teaching of this 'theory' in the school.
Let's face it folks, evolution is a theory, the big bang is a theory, gravitation is a theory. There is number theory out there, string theory. etc. Just because it's a theory does not make it valid. If it explains the world or universe adquately for our use then it is a valued theory. (Newtonian gravitation explains gravity in a general way and is good enough for general usage. Einsteinian theory explains it in a more accurate and discrete way.) If it supposes that something just form from nothing, then I highly doubt that it is a good theory.
Think for yourself. Don't get caught up in the religious arguements. If the theory makes sense, check it out further. Don't get caught up in the total BS that comes from these people who are out for 'Intelligent Design'. Check thing out.

Yah, and maybe the Americans will do the same with every other country in the world, too, but that's wishful thinking and will never happen.

Police using Tazers too Often???

Let's get off the back of the cops. They are doing a tough job and have practically no time in which they have to make the correct decision.
If you don't want the Tazers to be used then let the cops go back to using their guns. Everyone quit whining about the cops. They'll be there for you too someday and I hope you realize what they have to go through when they do their job.

Fresh Water How Much Is Truly Left?
Posted:
11/1/2007 2:26:32 PM
There's lots of fresh water left on the planet. Change your question to "How much clean and unpolluted fresh water is left on the planet?" and the amount of the usable water decreases by alot.
Don't forget that the ice caps on the north and south poles contain a vast majority of the total fresh water available. If you want more fresh water then just melt the polar caps by heating up the planet......Oh, wait, we're doing that already!!!!!!!

Good for you, Butterscotch2. We all know that the media can't give all the information in a neutral way, they have time or papers to sell. We just don't get the full story from the media.....
Years ago the Taser was touted to be the best thing for the cops to use. The do-gooders wanted the cops to be armed only with tasers. Now that there have been a few deaths from it, they are against the cops for following want was wanted in the first place.
There may be a detrimental effect on some people who are extremely aggitated or drugged up but how do you find out?

Astrophotography

The RASC meets at the planetarium at least monthly. Google them and you can find the time and date. They have an observatory at the planetarium and another on Cypress Bowl.
I used to do some astrophotography with a 6" f/5 Newtonian that my father and I built when I was in my teens. We didn't have a drive on it so we could only do short exposures. I had an old Olympus OM-1 with an adapter that I used. I had primarily lunar and planetary pics taken.
With the equipment now available there is no reason why professional quality pics can't be taken by just about anyone.

Whether it's true or not, I have no idea.

To me the reason alot of our food is so expensive compared to the US is due to those wonderful things called Marketing Boards. They're the ones who generally set the price and quotas for each producer. If you don't sell through the marketing board you generally can't sell your vegetables or meat or eggs. Ain't democracy great?
Not to mention that the meat processors here that take a lion's share of the profit from our meat.

Is anyone else out there sick of this?
Posted:

I am totally sick of listening about poor Brittney, Paris and all the others who end up polluting our world with their problems and supposedly important lives. Who cares how they get out of car and what they have on(or don't)under their clothes.
Do they (the celebs) care about our lives? No, I don't think so. They are so wrapped up in their own drug and alcohol infested lives that they wouldn't really care about anything except themselves.
It is our fault for buying the rags and listening to the news about these pathetic excuses for human beings. If we didn't listen or read about them, maybe they would all just go away and leave us alone.

More Stem Cells; Organ Replacement
Posted:
10/4/2007 3:15:36 PM
I was wondering if anyone out there would agree to have a diseased organ replaced if it could be regrown by stem cells. I know alot of politicians would 'against' it if it didn't affect their loved ones, but once it does, they would quickly change their minds on things. If their child needed a new heart or liver I'm sure they would eagerly have the procedure performed.
Personally, I would have a new heart growing for myself. After 3 heart attacks there aint' much left to it. I would love to return to work and be able to do normal day-to-day things without being exhausted after 10 minutes.
What if it was you? Would you have it done? Does it depend on the organ involved or what?

Illegal Alien kills Police Officer
Posted:

Out of curiousity, would it make any difference to you if the crimes that have been mentioned above would have been done by any American or is it the fact that they were done by illegals that bother you?
The American thing about illegals has been brought up by the conservative portion of the population to distract the rest of the population from the war in Iraq. It makes you think that you are being attacked by everyone.
C'mon, do you really think a 2,000 mile fence along the Mexico border is really going to keep illegals out of the country?
While I don't like the fact that people enter any country illegally, you gotta remember that everyone in North and South America is technically an immigrant, and the first ones were not legal according to the Natives who were here. You'll never end up ending the illegals entering any country.

It would probably have to be rotating at a phenomenal speed or to be similar to a shaped charge for it to produce a ring. The ring that is shown in most movies is probably just more attractive visually than a ball of light.
I would suspect in real life that it would just show up as a spherical ball of light and energy.

the welfare state? are we following the states and becoming one
Posted:
10/2/2007 1:55:32 PM
I for one am on disability and, not to worry, take no offense at what you have to say as it bothers the heck out of me, too. I do get a fair amount of money from my disability pension but I still don't have the money to go to the pub very often. By the time my disability cheques come in I'm down to just about nothing in my bank account and am pretty much broke, just like the normal working person is.
The safety net is just that, it's a net and it's full of holes! I know a number who are on disability or welfare who can work and have no intention to ever work, and it galls me to no end.
There is no longer a work ethic among our population. No one entering the work force wants to work more than 8 hours a day (and not an 8 hour night or evening shift either, just a day), and 5 days a week with no weekends.

$60,000.00 cash down & still not enough!
Posted:

What are you friends looking for to buy? You can move into a pretty nice condo for about $60,000 down. Yah, you're paying alot in mortgage but then, so did I when I bought my first place in the mid-80's, but honestly, it wasn't much more than the rent I was paying either.
How about buying a mobile home? Or not your 'ideal' place in not the 'perfect' location.
A great-aunt and uncle built a place off of 33rd and Knight just after WWII for just over $3,000. They didn't have a car until the mid-60's and raised 4, yes 4, kids in a house with only 700 square feet.
My place is just an old mobile home. I pay my pad rent and the trailer cost me about $14,000 2 years ago. Not the best place I've ever lived but sure beats living next to a very famous pig farm like I did about 15 years ago...........

ridiculous waste of money listening for radio waves
Posted:
8/16/2007 12:31:28 PM
Our radio emissions are already out there too. They are out about 70-80 light years so far, just a small distance on the galactic scale.
The wave length usually used is a very silent frequency as it is the frequency the is of neutral hydrogen. (Most gas in the universe is hydrogen but it is usually ionized.)
The cost of the SETI programs is minute when it is compared to most programs run by the government. Only several million dollars a year is needed to run it and some of the work is done by volunteers who can let the searchers use their home computers to analyze the data.

The Perseid meteor shower happens every year on the same date all over the world. It's actually one, if not THE, meteor shower that happens. If lucky you can see up to 90 meteorites an hour.
The Leonids that occurred a few years ago was spectactular because the comet that causes it had passed by the year before.

American Health Care Insurance .. A victim who had health insurance
Posted:

Hate to say it, but in the States you get what you wanted in the first place. Socialized medicine can cost alot in taxes and yes there are those who do not like it ("Smacks of Communism to me, Mavis!")
When a life can be saved by a procedure that is not supposedly covered by the insurance company, how much money are they really losing? Not much because they will make it up somewhere else. And after that person recovers, then the insurance company will just drop them as a client, anyways.
No system should cost the life if it's subjects whether it's for profit or not. I'm sick to death of the insurance and government pennypinchers killing people like this.

Abortion

I have nothing against a woman having an abortion. I also do not agree with it being used as a womans' ONLY method of birth control as I have seen some young women do.
I do not consider it taking a life. A fetus is unable to live outside the mother's body, without medical help, until it's lungs have matured. At that point, at least to me, it is a fetus and not a baby. Once it is able to carry on basic life support functions of its own, then an abortion should be permissible.

euthanasia
Posted:
8/3/2007 9:00:05 PM
It all depends on her 'quality of life' for the time that she remains alive. If it will not be good (and that's a very qualitative thing to measure) then she should be allowed to die when she wants. If her quality of life can be made good then euthanasia should not be perfomed at the time. She should take what she can, but still be let to die with some dignity. Unfortunately in our system, we do not allow many people to do that.
I had a friend with a tumour on her sternum who decided not to have treatment. She asked me if I thought she made the correct decision. Whether or not she had treatment made not much difference in her life expectancy, but I asked her how well she would have lived IF she didn't get the surgery and chemo and compare that to having the full treatment at all. I was happy to hear that she had changed her mind and took the treatment and lived fairly well for another 5 years.

No Respect For A Day Sleeper
Posted:
8/3/2007 12:51:56 PM
I worked graveyards for 16 years straight and slept during the day. I was usually in bed and asleep before 9am. Even with kids (who were in their early teens) I rarely had trouble with any interruptions. The knew they could wake me if there was any big problems or needed permission to go somewhere but they hardly ever did.
When I lived alone it was worse with the landscapers out there with their leaf blowers (even when it was raining!!) and mowers, but you live with it and knowing when they were coming you tried to get to bed earlier.
What really amazed me was the staff coming in on days during the summer complaining that they couldn't sleep at night because it was too hot!!!!! The poor babies! No sympathy from me, I had to sleep during the hottest part of the day.

Recycling Fees
Posted:
8/2/2007 1:01:52 AM
How many people would recycle more if they had to pay, say 5 cents, on every tin can, milk jug or container they bought like there already is on pop and beer containers? Would you support it if the government brought in legislation to promote recycling? I know there would be objections that the poorer folks couldn't afford to buy their food if they had to pay a bit more, but in the long run, wouldn't we be further ahead?
What do you think?

What if that exploration of the bottom of the sea is able to help solve the problems we have on the surface? Is it wrong then to go there and explore? No, it isn't, but we won't know unless we go there and find out. If it does help mankind then you'll be happy and say it was worth it. If it does not then you can complain that the money was wasted. You can't have it both ways, so what do we do? According to you, we don't go and we spend the money on the 'betterment of mankind'. Not to be cynical, but no matter what we do then there is always someone who will need help in one way or another. I don't say cut everyone off, not in the least, but let's make our choices intelligently and not put all our apples in the same barrel.
Science and technology has developed terrible things but it has also developed some great things, too. How many of your technological possessions are you willing to give up to help someone who needs it? Would you be willing to sell your computer to give to the starving in Darfur or around your corner? How far are you willing to go without your technology.
Super-bugs in the hospital? Oh yah they're there, but then part of it because many people run to the doctor demanding antibiotics from him/her and getting them. Who's fault is that? The doctors' or the patients?
Let's put a 5cent deposit on ALL containers that can be recycled, including cans, bottles, milk jugs, etc. For that 5 cents each, you'll get more and more of them recycled than if you didn't have that fee.
