Text Formatting (Quoting, Bolding etc.) - Practice Thread
Posted: 8/29/2011 11:24:06 AM
Im trying to make the head line bold, larger, and blue, when I enter the code it changes every thing in the post, what am I doing wrong?
< b >< font color=blue >< font size=3 >chop chop chop

For every opening tag, you will need a closing one, or else the attributes of the open one will continue, unless you commence a new tag that overrides the previous one.

Your example would require a closing tag, meaning at the end of your text. Closing tags have forward slash to denote their closing.

(/b)(/font)(/font)

You can combine the color and size in one

Hence it should look like this

(b)(font color=blue size="3")chop chop chop(/font) (/b)

I've substituted the < > with the ( ) brackets to illustrate their usage and when you use the correct brackets, it should look like this.

chop chop chop

Hope this helps,

Accidentally blocked, no way to tell them
Posted: 4/12/2010 7:43:42 PM

I think once you've been blocked, if they send you a note you can still reply to them.

Nope - unfortunately with the way the system works, the blocker can keep sending messages to the blockee and the blockee cannot respond, as is also noted by the poster you're responding to and quoted.

I've since recieved two messages from the guy asking why I've not replied. I can't reply cos its says I'm blocked!!! What do I do?????

my matches : users not contacted
Posted: 4/12/2010 3:34:06 PM

In the "my matches" section I have the drop down menu set on "users i've not contacted" and yet the users in there are people I have indeed already contacted. Is this a known bug? I just did a quick look through recent threads and can't really see anything similar.
Any ideas how i can make the "my matches" section show people I definitely haven't yet contacted?

I just had a look at My Matches, set it to Users I've Not Contacted, and it's clean - 45 of 45 showing that I certainly haven't contacted.

Several possibilities:

Users delete and recreate their profiles with a fair frequency from what I've noted, the possibility does exist that they're simply new again on the site, hence why they may show up. (Disclaimer - I rarely contact users with the voraciousness of most so that may skew my answer)

Deleting your browser's cookies and temporary internet files (cache) clears a lot of ills on this site - give that a shot, then reboot and relog back in.

Last possibility would be an outright glitch which is not out of the norm with all the tweaking going on, however I've been refreshing the page to see new matches appear as they log in, and still none that I've contacted before.

Reason for deletion is taking us out of the dark
Posted: 4/12/2010 3:21:01 PM

I have seen it in the deleted threads but I don't have any idea what transpired on that thread when I was not online.

Either one of the main rules was broken (see details and clarifications in the following: Acceptable Use and Posting Rules and Posting Guidelines ) were broken, or the thread topic was a topic that just degenerated into the usual gender bashing rendering the thread without merit and deleted.

As was mentioned, we don't have the time to make annotations of what is deleted and for what reason and email posters. As posters, you are to be familiar with the above rule threads and think if what you're posting follows the rules. In certain cases threads may follow the rules but due to the nature of the topic, they will simply degenerate, thanks to some of the posters. The lemmings follow suit and you then have a thread that's a wasteland. Bottom line, there's not enough time or resources to wind through an entire thread that could literally take a solid hour or more to clean down to a fraction of posts.

Tis the nature of the beast.

how to block user with no email
Posted: 4/10/2010 11:00:22 PM

I know nothing about writing code; maybe that would be difficult to offer as a feature. But there are times it'd be nice for some users.

It wouldn't be any harder than tying one's shoe. The mechanism is already in place - it just needs to be replicated to a button or link on a profile, like Add to Favourite, Report User, Send User Message etc. All that would be needed to complete the feature would be to send some less inflamatory message than what is being sent now - something simple such as "You don't meet User X's mail preferences" - simple as that.

One of the accounts gets blocked, so the user sends an email with the next account and so on. It's annoying.

Understandable and unfortunately, there are no resources to look after such matters with any immediacy, other than to keep blocking them and report them.

limitations on profile

Also, if a forum post does exceed the character limit, is it simply truncated at that point the same way it does in private messaging? Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

After some searching, I don't think one has to worry about coming up against a wall. I came across some long winded posts in the Religion/Politics forums and found one that exceeded 21,000 characters (spaces included) with a logical conclusion (i.e. no apparent cut off).

Yep - I've seen it many a time in the past and still do. Is it a problem? Depends on what you consider a problem. My mystery thumbnail is from the US East and a forum poster. I just ignore it like many things that go unanswered feature wise.

Account not allowing replies to emails?
Posted: 4/7/2010 6:59:14 PM

Hello! It appears as if the POF website is not allowing people to reply to my emails. Is anyone else having similar trouble?

Nothing to do with POF at all - simply the users you are contacting. If you are seeing a Read or Read/Deleted status to your sent emails, then that's as far as it goes.

Take a wander over to this forum >> Profile Reviews and get an opinion from other users, as well as reading the pinned posts at the top of that forum.

Question about sent messages,
Posted: 4/6/2010 3:44:08 PM

It had been a few weeks since my last login on POF. This evening when I decided to sign in, I checked my sent msg folder. Just to see who read and /or deleted my messages. One of my messages was deleted.

At the bottom of your email composition window is the following FYI:

If a user requests money on this site it's a scam, and you should report it here along with any other type of scam/spam. We delete messages older than 20 days because they take up too much space.

Chances are it was over 20 days old, if as you say you've been away for a few weeks.

And Beside where it should have been it said "Messages to deleted users will not show here!"

That is another FYI - if the system/Admin deletes the user for TOS violations, any emails to that user are also deleted.

Other than that, at the top of this forum:

My Matches are not Matches
Posted: 4/5/2010 8:35:12 PM

Why does POF keep sending me "My Matches" that are just a bunch of guys that have NOTHING in common with me?

From the HELP link at the top of this page.

How do the Weekly Matches work?

Your matches are influenced by a combination of basic search settings and your actions on the site. The system identifies what users you generally search for as well as a number of other factors in the system when creating your matches. The more searching and general using of the site you do, the better the system can create appropriate matches for you.

That's all that there is on the subject. Unless a specific section is added to the site where you tell the system what are all the attributes you seek that you would conisder a potential match (other than attractiveness as that is subjective) and then have the site capture such attributes in a profile, then there's little that can be done other than capture what you search on (via the criteria in the Advanced Search), and some basic contact restrictions in your Mail Settings. It's rudimentary at best IMO.

Like the post above me says, just consider them a base serving from which to work with. Keep searching, and keep refreshing the My Matches page as it changes based on user logins.

Circumventing the Block User thing
Posted: 4/5/2010 7:04:05 PM

So there is no way around this, right? Wait for the new rude email and block again, and again, and again?

Follow the instructions in the thread at the top of this forum:

Also email me the screen names and I will see if I can expedite matters with Admin.

For extreme cases of repeated abuse, wait for another email if they've deleted their current profile, ensure you have your Allow Users to Know you have Viewed their Profile setting turned off in you Mail Settings, see if it's the same user, do not open their email, report them via the instructions above and also email me the names.

Did she delete her profile????
Posted: 4/4/2010 2:57:40 PM

But her pic and profile is still accessible through my inbox when i click her name. So did she delete her profile

If you can see her profile, then it hasn't been deleted.

I got this message from a girl and i replied back. But when i search for her and check my "who viewed me". She does not show up.

Simply because she doesn't show on your View Me, doesn't mean she has deleted her account.

She may have turned off the feature that allows other people to know she has viewed their profile, or has possibly hidden her profile - one of the two.

Pictures of pets in profile photos...DUH
Posted: 4/4/2010 8:11:18 AM

It is ok having pictures of your pets in your photos, in your profile as long as your face shot is included and all my photos with my pets have my own face shot included.

As long as you're in ALL the picture and easily visible while also adhering to the other rules, (recognizable and no nudity), Fluffy or Spot can certainly be in the picture with you.

The simple rule is that the profile owner must be in all pictures.

Pictures of pets in profile photos...DUH
Posted: 4/3/2010 9:09:50 PM

What gives with people posting pictures of their pets in their profile. Give us a break. There is a section to report about images that do not represent the person but the rule only states that the main image must meet that criteria. I think its time to update this so that all the images posted represent the person. This isn't Facebook.

This is your bible found on the Image Upload page.

Three ways of reporting images.

  1. Use the “Report profile if main image doesn’t show user’s face” - I use it for obvious rip-offs or anything that doesn’t show the user’s face like this one that was found in over 185 different places on the net.

  2. If you’re rating photos, use the “Delete, No Clear Headshot” choice.

  3. If you see a profile while searching etc. with pictures of anything but them, use the “Report User” link at the bottom of their profile, and select “Other”, and “Delete Image/Modify Profile” reasons.

That should cover all bases.

Unhide Income in Profiles
Posted: 4/2/2010 9:11:55 AM

I make a reasonable amount of bank, and I know it's helped my results in the past...So please give people the option to show income on profile pages. Thanks

Users can search out individuals within a specifc income bracket via the Advanced Search. So you'll still be known to make a certain amount without plastering it on your profile and either making it seem like one is a braggart, making little or hiding something.

Admin is aware of all the prior threads and suggestions.

(and why on earth do I have a mod hammer available to me....?)

Doesn't work for regular users and Admin hasn't bothered to hide it from the list to regular users.

so as you seem to find the reason so obvious - perhaps you could enlighten me?

At this point, whatever it was, is gone and cannot be retrieved. If it was Moderator deleted, we don't record them, nor send out enlightenments due to a lack of resources, hence why you are to have familiarized yourself with the posted rules.

If the community deleted it, you would have received a message. If that message was "For obvious reasons", then it must have been pretty blatant. Go over the following thread at the top of this forum:

Reprint from the above FAQ in Post #5 (see red highlighting)

Your profile will be flagged, if you REPEATEDLY (4 or more times) send FIRST CONTACT emails to members who are SEEKING AN INTIMATE ENCOUNTER or OTHER RELATIONSHIP in their profile. The key is "repeatedly", not once or twice, but a definite pattern of contacting members first, who are looking for an Intimate Encounter. You know, [trappedonbay street], while most of us acknowledge and respect the work you do in moderating and trying provide a real-time source of information in how to navigate this site and make the most of the social experience here, there are times when many of us as adults would just like to understand why something that was well designed is being significantly altered.

In total agreement, but sadly we're kept in the dark 99% of the time as well, nor do we have any input on any of the changes made. We just try to point out alternatives in the face of changes and quell unneeded uprisings, or inane posts without merit.

As for this new feature, there are many features that, agreed, may make little sense to most, but if really explained to us, would only speak to the bo$$om line.

What does this feature do? From what I can tell, Admin may be responding to a lot of other complaints that people don’t know when users come online with any frequency and whether or not it’s worthwhile emailing them (not knowing there are other ways of figuring out when they do come on line, e.g. status on favourites add, status on searches etc.)

From what I observe in a lot of postings, users prefer to be pushed to, rather than search for themselves, hence another page of potentials pushed out to the masses, and of course in the process generates curiosity page views (read $ revenue). I know it seems like a reach, but I can’t come to any other logical conclusion.

I just keep to the “hey it’s free, if I find a feature particularly of little value, I just ignore it and search” mantra – Admin does plenty of analytics against the staggering 1.1 billion (yes, billion ) page views per month, and if a feature isn’t he eventually ditches for something that does.

There are literally tens of thousands of pics uploaded daily (stats quote over a million photos per month), do you really think Admin w/o staff is going to sit there and manually review photos? He's too busy counting $'s. See my prior post - "if there staff".

Now... I am not exactly sure what happens to the picts. that you say to delete - that would be interesting to find out whether they actually get deleted right away or if they go somewhere for review by the site admin first? If anyone knows - can they tell me?

Your one vote won't delete them immediately - it takes some unknown number of reports by unique users, to cross an Admin set threshold before it goes buh-bye automatically.

What would be a REALLY cool feature on this site is if you could actually try to fix some of the photos... like the simple fixes such as "rotate photo" and "crop photo" and "lighten photo" - because nothing drives me more crazy than a good photo on it's side or upside down! GRRR! If the users were actually able to help each other out like that - I think that would be great

If there were staff to do it - yes, otherwise, not such a good idea in the hands of some.

I would like a feature called "Users who have been blocked by ___ # of POFers in your area"

Equally useless and subjective as a lot of users, use the block function on perfectly harmless messages. Nothing like painting someone without merit. Much like the Intimate Encounter flag (which won't publicly out you, unless you decide to do so yourself here in the forums complaining about it), they would simply delete themselves.

There will never, and should not be any hall of shame on this site IMO. All it takes is one wrongful public display and the site could face legal implications.

Report users as per the existing private avenues, and if enough complaints come in to set a pattern, they will be automatically deleted.

Thread Deletions..not the usual question
Posted: 3/29/2010 9:30:02 PM

why not make part of the voting to remove a thread process that the voter has to explain why they are wanting the thread removed?

There is already, to some extent. You will see the following when new threads are started in specific forums where voting is available. If the OP doesn't stick around to see what transpires, and doesn't know, then they should be aware of what potentials could possibly lie ahead for a thread.

If this thread is spam, a self pity thread, or any other type of
thread that is against the rules request to have it deleted.

Reason for deleting:

and in the case there the thread is valid, repeat offenders removing threads for non bvalid reasons would be easily identified when the reason they state isnt apparent in the thread. and it might stop some of the people who just vote to remove anything that isnt posted by one of their online 'clique'

We have monitoring in place for that already.

Read the entire thread thoroughly, the subject has gone through the wringer.

^ What Trapped meant (I think) is that all pictures that are uploaded, whether we keep them private or not, go through that rating process - it's how the system is designed to help with pic/quality control.

Correct ... (although I somewhat disagree with that method based on a user's privacy NOT being totally that).

Sorry I am actually from Toronto, and right now I see in the rows on top of my inbox. Two girls from Scarborough, Two girls from Oshawa, one from Mississauga, and one from Toronto.

Totally normal, as the cities that make up the GTA are all connected and the results based on proximity within a 50 mile radius of your postal code (results may vary).

Your best bet is to use the Advanced Search, specify Toronto and use a 5 mile radius, and even that is off, (I get the town of Goderich which is almost 300 km away - go figure) but you can't tell with some of the oddball ones that pop up if the user has incorrectly entered their postal code or just the flakey alogorithm used to calculate distances. For the most part though, 95% of the results are close enough.

I have the same problem. I am in Toronto and I get matched with everything but people in Toronto. I understand exactly what I am doing. I know I have the right postal code, city, country. There has to be some logical explanation to this occurrence. It can't be just a few of us? It would sure be nice if the Admin would help out us poor single souls :).

What cities are you seeing per chance other than Thunderbay (gathered from you changing the subject line) ?

Is your postal code a GTA and surrounding area postal code or Toronto proper?

What page(s) is this occuring on? My Matches, the row above your inbox, your profile?

Also be aware that the other users (not you) put in contradictory city and postal codes, hence appearing on your list incorrectly - this has been known to happen.

Additionally, if you've been experimenting, try deleting your cookies and temp internet files, re-booting and relog back in and check - this sometimes clears things up.

then why don't you just upload a shirtless pic and keep it private and then attach it to your emails?

Unsound advice, as one risks losing their pic upload rights permanently, when the picture is put up for rating HERE, regardless of it being made private or public.

Don't search them out and you won't have that problem.

Set your Mail Settings to block all contact from IE Seekers - not that it matters because you cannot trip the flag by simply answering their emails. The flag only trips if you contact them (you're given 4 oops I didn't notice chances).

Any and all other suggestions have been put forth numerous times and Admin isn't bending on this, sorry to say.

sent messages?!
Posted: 3/28/2010 8:32:26 PM

how do i view the messages i sent?!
i can't remember who i email all the time...
(sometimes i view someone, but don't email....)

i want to make sure i don't email the same person again, you know!?!?!

Check your sent message page, or your contact history via the following that is also found just above your sent messages.

Hey if you see unread deleted don't be disappointed, normally 1 in 3 messages get responded to. We find a lot of people read your profile before reading your message. Check out your entire contact history HERE

hello. i deleted my account. it was under a different user name. and i need that one back.

You won't get anywhere with requests to the site for such matters. If it's a question of just the username, then change your current username at the bottom of your Profile: Edit page, providing no one has taken that name already. Other than that, you're SOL on the prior profile and all its contents and attributes.

hidden profile yet others can view me!!
Posted: 3/28/2010 3:33:09 PM

Our personal information is Our business no one-elses!!.

I would guess that there are far more people, let's say approximately 18 million and change users of this site (active and non) who have access to view your profile, than casual observers from the "outside".

If you're concerned with your safety, then hide your profile HERE. You will be forever hidden to the world (other than to the ones that have been in contact with you or viewed your postings here).

The ability to have outsiders look in, brings business to the site, thereby making it free - don't think the Owner is going to change this, if ever.

I agree. If winks become part of this site I'd like the option of not accepting them or turning them off.

You mean like the option of removing someone's interest in you by taking yourself off their favourites?

can't update anything on my profile
Posted: 3/27/2010 3:24:07 PM

I am un-able to update my profile. what ever changes i make in the profile and adding pictures, they won't display when i click view profile. whats wrong and how can i fix it?

We can't tell what you're doing right or wrong. Are you clicking on the update profile, update images buttons on those pages. As for your profile, did you update your income?

Refresh your web browser (F5) and check again, depending on your browser settings you may just be viewing a cached profile page.

Also check the following for possible problems:

Hijacked account.
Posted: 3/27/2010 3:00:18 PM

Whatever is happening, as your story and how you're managing to login to something you say you have no knowledge of is odd, but in any event, take the following steps:

  1. Delete Your Account Here

  2. Get rid of your email account

  3. If required, get yourself a new email address, and re-sign up

The site doesn't know if someone has started it for you, nor if you have plainly forgotten. If you want to be secure, take the above steps, and ensure you protect your email address, password and lock your network down if you're sharing a connection.

I'm all in favor of any hinting communication that works around the formality of composing an email.

The site has already provided you with such a feature - see Post #2 of this thread.

POsting more than 2 posts on the same thread.

I did a check to see if this question has been asked but couldn't find it.

From the FORUMS: Why can I not post - 1 thread, linked to in the FAQ thread at the top of this forum:

You're attempting your 3rd post within the last 10 consecutive posts with very little to say to add to the discussion - as a courtesy give others a chance to interject rather than trying to monopolize the discussion. If you have a substantial amount to add, then the post may go through, otherwise if it's just a short off topic, nothing relevant to add to the discusion post, it will not go through. This applies to all in the thread. Don't ask what the threshold for text length in order for the 3rd post to go through as it's not puiblished and Mods will not know either.

oh really, cause i just think they are favoring you to come back later, never really took it as a wink lol. so when you usually favorite them do they respond ? because i've only faved one person.

So what possible reasons are there for adding someone to your list:
  • Usually used as a "hint"

  • Easy access to email online friends on the site

  • Allows you to know when somebody is online now

  • Allows you to know when somebody was on line last.

  • Has a note pad function connected to the profile.

  • Allows them to add a testimonial to your profile.

What is your expected behaviour if someone adds you?
  • Do nothing.

  • Don't assume they will email you, they may be waiting for you to email them.

  • You may email them if you like, or you don't have to.

  • Add then to your favourites and see who blinks first.

  • Remove yourself from their list.

  • If they continually add you and you continually remove them, feel free to report them via the acceptable Reporting Methods

Bottom line ....
  • There are no set rules to its use.

  • Pretend it's a wink.

  • Use it as you wish.

  • React as you wish.
