[Bug] Remove from matches
Posted: 11/21/2009 10:50:07 AM

I've found after using the Remove user from my matches the person isn't actually removed at all,

This may be one explanation, try the day after in case the removal is an overnight process - given my own experience within the computer industry, some processes do not run real time, but in fact, are run overnight during off peak system periods so as to not affect usability during the peak periods. check tomorrow or in a few days if they're still there.

I've witnessed that some users routinely delete their profiles on a regular basis, for whatever reason, and if that happens, of course they may re-appear if they still fit the tangible criteria that was previously used by the system in determining matches.

As well , ensure that your own PC is set to routinely delete cookies and temporary internet files on shut down, as this system heavily relies on them.

infact that user will reappear even under the User's i have contacted list, even though i had contacted them.

More than likely by design as users have cried for ages to keep a runniing list of users they have contacted so that they contact them again. The two features, IMO should not be linked due in part, that you may find users a match through your own searches that never appeared on your My Matches, contacted them, and still need to be listed in Users That You Have Contacted.

As for more filtering and sorting on matches that are pushed to you, they may not happen for whatever reason due in part to lack of resources and computing constraints - consequently use your own filtering through your own searches.

Seems most of these new features either don't work at all or not properly lol!!

Ignorance of how things are designed to work really don't warrant off topic remarks that have no basis, or aid in the discussion - read the Posting Guidelines

What's up with this?
Posted: 11/21/2009 10:49:59 AM

"Our system predicts that the following users are the most attracted to you. These users are Women who have not yet contacted you and maybe not even viewed your profile".
Is there any truth to this? Really what's all this based on? The same as "Users who are really into you"

If you continue to read

We auto detect your most alluring trait. Be that your profession, your outlook on life, your personality or the way you look or the fact you love dogs etc. Listed below are users who are REALLY REALLY into your most alluring trait or group of traits. Now the users who are the most attracted to you often share the same traits, they could all love motorbikes, or all be hikers or artists etc. So don't be surprised if everyone below has a motorbike in their picture or are all bankers etc. We are not filtering these results in any way, you may not find these people appealing in any way. Yet they all find YOU the most attractive or alluring person. Another search ---> Girls you may think are hot!!!

.... and understand this is all adaptive matching based on your site usage patterns, it becomes clearer, that there is something linking them to you. It may mean nothing, but is merely another presentation of possibilities - nothing more , nothing less.

When I view my local "Singles Events" page I see several dudes, even when I am logged in.

Yep, confirmed as I never go into that forum - those mugs still exist while ALSO logged in. Must be some plot to aid in "drawing" more women to the events - although with the mugs that I mentioned appearing for me, would be more of a deterrant

May as well put up an array of model type guys , just like those devilish same sized thumbnails that appear between the viewed me rows ...

Query about pictures and profiles
Posted: 11/21/2009 8:41:53 AM

Also why are some profiles wider than usual?

Some people enter long contiguous strings of text/character in their about me section which hasn't been dealt with properly in the coding, consequently rendering the profile incorrectly, in other words stretched beyond the limits of what the profile should be.

Can anybody explain to me why some profile pictures have a black border top and bottom or at the side, but not all the time...not always the same pictures, it seems random

A few possible reasons:

The image routine doesn't like a lot of white space in the picture and may render it incorrectly because it cannot find the "edge" of the photo, per se. There is a feature when rating photos to crop the white space, and if selected, may add the border in order for the image routine to render it's proportions correctly.

Users themselves may also add borders via their own image "pretty up" tools ...

Just a few explanations that come to mind.

How come the same line of guys is at the top of forums page everyday? It never changes now.

  • this only occurs when NOT logged into the forums

  • this happens consistently, regardless of any cookie or temporary browser refreshes.

This was tested under 2 different laptops and an iPhone, using Vista and XP OS, under Opera, Firefox and Safari browsers.

Just another non priority - but I am getting tired of looking at the same dude with the fake painted on mustache and straw hat, and some other dude with some bizarre pac man puppet hat ... thankfully this can be alleviated by logging into the forums.

How do you think dating issues are different for those over 45 than for younger people?

Important: This Forum Is Not A Chat Room

  • The only valid topics permitted in this forum are for issues and discussion topics THAT ARE SPECIFIC and EXCLUSIVELY experienced by members, Ages 45 and Over.

  • In Other Words - IF the topic or issue can be experienced by any age group, then it does NOT belong in this forum - post it to the one of the other general forums.

  • Understand that simply tagging on +45 to your subject does NOT make it a valid topic for this forum - Re-Read the first point and then ask yourself if your thread can be experienced by any other age group - If the answer is yes, then post it elsewhere.

  • Realize that this is not a forum for only 45+ members to "hang out" in - anyone may participate and give a valid opinion or contribution.

  • No "BLOG" posting - There is no value to a thread that is based on, for example, how your day is going, or a rant - there must be a point to the discusion that will have some value to be referenced by others.

When I go to my favourites page, there are three pictures above and then above that a row of pictures. How is the list of three chosen?

Unknown and has yet to be disclosed by Admin.

    However, current theories include:

  • placing all profiles in a giant drum, spinning it and dropping out a few unrelated users to make you wonder ...

  • users that have filed a civil lawsuit against you for not reading, or replying to their email ...

  • users that stalk your profile numerous times per day, i.e. repeated views of 50 or more times per day ...

  • users that have crafted an email to you on numerous occasions, chickened out and hit cancel instead ...

  • semi serious members ...

    Profiles: Profile Images as Drawings
    Admin Message Image Deleted

And if by chance you hadn't followed the FAQ, perhaps the wording on the image upload page may give a clue?

Key in on, All Images, not one or some, and Visible Head Shot, not back, toes, feet, torsos or any other body part commonly on display in Gray's Anatomy (the book).

If you note other people not following the rules, they too in time will lose the pic and or their pic upload rights.

If you can manage to display your face and back at the same time, feel free, although a bit tricky.

Hacked password multiple times WTF POF???!!!
    Posted: 11/19/2009 4:17:23 PM

perhaps a key logger has been installed on my puter, but to me seems to be a stretch

No stretch at all - 10 year olds can, and are doing it ...

All you problems are a result of your own lack of security measures.

    Take the following steps:

    1. delete this account

    2. get yourself a decent anti virus/malware/spyware program and ensure your machine is clean.

    3. if you have a wireless network, consult the router's guide on how to secure (password protect) your network.

    4. get yourself a new disposable email account.

    5. create a new POF account and ensure your new screen name is not the same as the first portion of your email account or you won't be able to use it.

    6. create a password here, that has a combination of letters and numbers.

    7. if you share your pc or even log in from public places, ENSURE you use the logout links rather than just closing your browser.

does pof have a ip logger to see who and when an account was logged into?

The site doesn't have the resources to field such requests, nor is it responsible for your own PC's lack of security - regrets

ive made new profiles and i get the deleted

One concurrent account per registrant - see Acceptable Use and Posting Rules

please reply to me by inbox by user name or email me please

No such mechanism as noted in the Customer Support link, hence the above two help avenues.

i just think with all the members that we all deserve some more options with your services

Free services are rarely in a "deserve" more mode.

and if u need some marketing perspectives i would be more then willing to share more corperate information about how others are making websites for nearly no cost to them...

The site already does quite quite well on a monthly basis - Google to find out more.

    Blank messages?
    Posted: 11/17/2009 6:49:56 PM

The message was at the bottom of my email... Clear my cookies? Reboot? ARe you sure you don't work for the cable company? OK I'll check it out, but I sure don't see how that could possibly matter.

It may sound odd, but a lot of problems on this site are cleared up with this, however, given that you can see the rest of the screen, i'm leaning toward some new filter that perhaps hasn't quite been tested rigerously.

If you can see the user names attached to the emails, try replying to it and asking the sender to resend their original message and see what happens.

Given the fact that we're not appraised of any changes on this site, we're sometimes if not often, left guessing ourselves.

Opening in Mac is ok but Windows is not
    Posted: 11/17/2009 6:42:40 PM

I can log into the site on both Mac and Windows computers, but when I log in with my windows laptop, I can't view any messages or see who's viewed me (nothing shows up eventhough I received an email saying there was new stuff there). I run Firefox on both computers, and have had no problem at all on my Mac.

A lot of anomalies on this site where things are working as they should, but for some odd reeason don't on other machines, we like to start off the debug process by having the user logoff , clear your cache and cookies, rebooting and then trying again, and then we can take it from there.

    Blank messages?
    Posted: 11/17/2009 4:32:00 PM

Trapped we have had several people complain of this exact thing in the last couple months or so. The body of the message is empty but it exists in their inbox with a sender, as a normal looking message until it is opened. Or at least that is what they describe...

Possibility of some new filter cleaning the entire contents out but leaving the email shell - who knows ....

A, when I clicked on the subject line the email was totally blank.

OP, was the rest of the screen visible after the blank email? This should have been visible at the bottom

Plentyoffish.com is not responsible for the contents of these messages.

hope that this isn't something that's happening to a lot of users, and that what ever problem it stems from is eradicated soon

If there is no interaction between you and the server for 15 minutes, it times you out. It's simply load management practices.

Tip of the Day is to compose any long emails or profiles in a word processing app , run spell and grammar check, then simply copy and paste it to your profile here.

Underage Users - How do you prove it?
    Posted: 11/17/2009 8:33:52 AM

Am I basically helpless here and there's nothing that can be done?

Well, even if you had proof, the site doesn't have a mechanism to accept any evidence.

Your best bet is to use your common sense , good judgment and gut instinct, and as you mentioned, STAY AWAY.

As for reporting, you can report the profile via the Report User link at the bottom of her profile. One report won't be enough, but if enough people report the profile who also have the same suspicion, then the system will take are of it automatically, once a certain threshold of reports are crossed.

One report per person per profile - multiple reports by the same person are obviously ignored for potential malicious abuse of the feature.

I've just joined the site and I've gotten 2 blank (email) messages from members in the last 2 days. Is there a problem with the site or the senders? :)

Well, as we know it, it's physically impossible to send a blank message, unless of course something has changed. In any event ...

    A) Are you talking about two actual physical messages that have a username attached to them and a subject line?

When you clicked on the subject line, and opened the email it was totally blank?

    OR

    B) Are you talking about the email notification indicator in the top left hand corner indicating you have 2 emails, yet there are no emails in your inbox?

    Which is it, A or B ?

Is There a Way to Be Online Without Anyone Seeing I am Online
    Posted: 11/16/2009 7:56:13 PM

Its no one elses business when we are online and we have the right not to be bothered.

... and that right has been extended to you by way of hiding your profile.

... and you have also signed away any other rights, as agreed to, by you, by accepting the Terms of Service and User Agreement when you went through the registration process.

Regardless of the Online Indicator, even if it wasn't there, all search results are presented in order by last online, so in effect, someone can still deduce you have been online today at some point, if they see your profile thumbnail float by the top of their inbox, a viewed me list, a search result listing, a my matches listing etc...

Why is it that protestant isn't shown in the list?

I believe that group would be covered under Christian - Other - which would include an arm's length list of other similar deities. Consequently, it would simply make the list too long and unmanageable, and perhaps causing a lot of people who search based on that field, to exclude each other.

If you feel it important, simply delineate further in your About Me as to your preference or your beliefs.

(not to be mistaken for a criticism)

    None taken ....

Which is this: why not consider that any banning, beyond say ten days, need be approved by more than one mod?

We all follow the same guidelines, and given that:

  • each person's case is different

  • there are no resources to have a group sit down to mull over things

  • there are moderator time zone differences

  • we set our own times for when we volunteer our services

  • and that when a user needs to be curbed it's done at the point when they are reviewed

  • ... consequently, there is no need for collaboration.

Malicious use of the 'Report User' facilty
    Posted: 11/13/2009 6:33:23 AM

My only comment is this: As one who started my own business aged 17 & been succesful at every business venture I've ever entered into I was taught 1 simple & valuable lesson. A customer is a customer no matter how little he/she spends or how much of your time they take up, happy & satisfied customers recommend others & so the business grows.

I would tend to agree, but given the following factors, the business and the nature of this particular beast with 10 million users, thousands signing up daily, it being free, the nature of the problem, where the problems are and being fairly isolated, this being the non revenue generating side, and add to the fact that any zapped members typically return, you really have have to look at the big picture. Re-read my prior post - risks exist with any venture, in particular self service oriented businesses.

If your comment: So a few forum participants get zapped - in the grand scheme of things, not a big life altering event. is that of the site & not your personal opinion then I believe it wrong, a member is a member, no matter how small a part they play in the success of the site & to be removed through no fault of their own is simply wrong.

Be it wrong or not, given the circumstances and the environment, it is what it is, personal opinion or not. I've addressed what can be with a no fault removal. It's the forums and I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it, and from the looks of things neither does the guy at the top. There are hundreds more items that seriously need attention from a functionality point of view than a handful of miscreants.

In conclusion, if it happens, I'm sure there are avenues to get back to me or any other moderator, with any relevant information that can be passed on up the line to take care of matters. I'm also quite certain that the perpetrators aren't aware that by breaking this site's TOS, they could also be breaking the TOS agreed upon between themselves and their ISP, and if necessary can be brought to the attention of their own ISP, resulting in slightly more severe consequences than a few days off from the Jerry Springer show.

    Should I be concerned?

If you gave her your private email , then the worst that can happen is that you're going to possibly get spammed by that user or by any vermin that she sold your email to.

If you're concerned about SPAM, toss the email account and get a new one.

    Opinions may vary ...

I think ZG has is spot on in msg 7, if the site is allowing an 'auto delete' system to be abused

You almost word it such that you totally invalidate the function based on certain factions who IMO believe in the right to use and act as they see fit because it's free - to build a Cadillac for a non revenue generating resource will simply not happen.

The site is aware of the abuse, yes, those are called risk factors that it's willing to live with. Look at any business project proposals, an entire section is devoted to risks and their mitigation, they're evaluated and either accepted or rejected. So a few forum participants get zapped - in the grand scheme of things, not a big life altering event.
The site is here primarily for relationships and if you choose to also play in any sandbox forum civilization, it won't be perfect, in fact, far from it, unless you live in Nirvana.

& Admin (who is aware) doesn't take any action

    See expenses vs. revenue generation.

then the sites credability is in jeopardy

To a scant fraction of 5% of users. 95% aren't even aware.

& members who conduct themselves within the TOS are at risk of being deleted through no fault of their own other than having an opinion.

Collateral damage is unfortunate - but it typically regenerates.

I may not agree with how things are handled, but only give an insight as to what is and to perhaps why.

Isn't there a danger of that being too late in most cases?

Perhaps, however not being in the know of how things work - some users do find their way back to the system.

If the mechanism is being triggered by the same people, then removing them from the site won't be of much use to those who had fallen victim to their maliciousness.

Well, if I've read your statement right - then conversely, of what use would it be to keep the triggering users about, and of what good would it be to the fallen? Isn't the point to remove the triggers and preventing further maliciousness?

And we already know that the site does not examine any of the reports which trigger the mechanism.

Probably not as a general rule, as there is next to nil staff.

I am aware of several people who fell victim to this practice, because their deletion was trumpeted elsewhere on the internet, and for no reason other than they had upset members of a particular group.

Then by all means, pass along this information to any of us us and we'll bring it to light to Admin.

So if the site is not examining each individual complaint once the trigger has been achieved, then it is failing to protect its members from malicious conduct.

Unfortunately, any automated system is only as good as its coding. If Admin has not built in any other mechanism to study reporting trends, or monitor reporting thresholds, then a rogue band of monkeys could pose a problem. Such problems would have to be looked at manually.

It follows that it doesn't matter what the reason given is (e.g. 'abusive user' - told me my hair looked funny), if the site doesn't check them, then the malicious complainants 'get away with it.'

I can't comment on how the mechanism works such as if different thresholds/weightings are used based on type of report lodged, frequency of, is it just reports in general - what severity of action is taken depending on the different types of reports etc ...

I somehow doubt much sophistication was allotted the function's design.

    1) Every report should be examined, and judged upon its merit.

    simply not feasible

    2) The trigger should be raised to a substantial level.

this may then retain truer bad apples - the troop would just recruit a few more monkeys to join

    3) The trigger should be raised to a reasonable level, and once activated, the complaints should be examined and judged on their merit.

I doubt you'll see any mass review of reports other than specific complaints based on similar findings by you mentioned further up.

    4) The mechanism should be abolished.

    Can't do that

    The solutions IMO:

  • are to deal with the monkeys when good suspicion is aroused AND reported

  • implement thresholds for reporters.

  • implement differing criteria for forum users, as this is where the severe problems manifest themselves

  • overhaul the various reporting mechanisms, be it for inconsistencies or smarter logic - surely some of these coding smarts that are alluded to be used in superior matching logic can be used to come up with better reporting mechanisms.

  • I accept that this may involve more effort on the part of the site when a group of malicious reporters decides upon a target, but it will improve the site's standing if it is shown to be protecting site members from acts of malice.

Bottom line - accept the fact that Admin probably won't devote much resources due to forum participant BS antics that may only affect a small fraction of the population.

Trying to design a feature to fit the majority of the population while dealing with anomalies usually falters.

If the moderating teams profiles can be protected then why can't there be some mechanism added to the site to allow everyone's profiles the same protection.

What would be the point of protecting everyone like the Admin team?

Otherwise why can't the report user button on the profiles be removed and if people want to report they simply do it through the violations thread.

... because only 5% of users , use the forums and consequently wouldn't know of the "Forum" Violation Thread, not to mention that it is only for forum infractions.

... because Moderators cannot go to the extent of "removing" profiles from the site, only the forums - unfortunate as that may be.

I believe the only people that could answer this with any degree of accuracy would be the site owner and those that he’s given administrator rights to for programming and other maintenance roles.

    That would be correct

My understanding of the tool is that it requires a good amount of reports to be made against a profile for it to automatically delete the profile.

Correct, but not limited to - we don't know, nor will it, obviously, be made known.

So to think that a group of 25 people have all the same mob mentality is quite unreasonable.

Not really when you sit on this side - there's plenty of "known" mentality - or lack there of.

I do believe that there is a sampling of reports that is taken,

The possibility exists if there is a persistant need to examine certain cases.

and the site owner/administration has the ability to remove from a person/s profile the right to report another user.

Removed from the site would be more likely.

The tool isn't flawless, but if abused, can certainly be looked into.

Does anyone else keep getting the notification of "2 new messages" and there are none?

    No
    1. try logging off from POF using the log out links

    2. clear your Cookies and Temporary Internet Files

    3. re-boot your machine

    4. log back on to POF mail

    5. send yourself an email if it still shows messages waiting but none in your inbox

... this should clear it up.

This was probably a stray notification, due to a member being deleted from the system and their messages being vapourized along with them.

If this doesn't remedy the situation, wait a day or so, things of this nature have a way of rectifying themselves.

    Online or not...
    Posted: 11/10/2009 5:32:20 PM

What would cause that? Could a phone app cause them to appear online? It's really strange.

Leading cause of a lag time would be the user not logging off properly using the logout links, in which case the lag time is about 15 minutes.

An app if not coded properly could show a disparity, depending on the caching/ page refresh routine of the app.

Guys who think you are hot????
    Posted: 11/10/2009 1:39:24 PM

OK this part is really stupid seeing as these men have never viewed my profile

Unless they've told you, you do not know this for a fact.

Look at, or click here MAIL SETTINGS and see that you can turn off the feature that allows people to know you've viewed their profile.

and most of them say they are looking for the total opposite of me.

That may very well be, however what one says in a profile and what one does online may be completely polar opposites. The feature is no where near perfect, and that goes for any matching scheme on any dating site, relies on tracking a person's activities on POF. The system may collate what kind of search criteria a person plugs into a search, what kind of people they may favourite, what kind of people on average will the person view, email, block, etc etc.

Given all this tracked site movement information, the system may try and correlate it to all your features. Useful? up to you, just something different and not to be the sole reliance of your search.

    Why bother???

We don't all subscribe to the same cup of tea do we ....

It would be better if there was a hot button then people can hit it when they see you. Or a flirt or a wink...

The site already has a pretty obvious one - it's called the Add to Favourites button and accomplishes the very same thing and a host of other things.

    What a waste of time

Well now you won't waste any more time on it, especially when you can tailor your own searches to exactly what you like.

Is there a way to search by spoken language other than english ?

Given that there is no language of preference indicator to fill in your profile, there consequently is no ability to search on it.

At best, in the Advanced search, enter French as an interest criteria, and see how that pans out.

how does a member see what you are talking to others about
    Posted: 11/9/2009 5:13:13 PM

guess that is what it is yes.

If you're talking about what you see when you click on the View All Correspondence link that appears at the top of an opened email, then the only person that can see this "conversation", more commonly known as your email history between you and another member, is YOU or the party that you are communicating with - no one else.

My points regarding account security and password strength still hold. If someone breaks into your account or the other person's account, all bets are off.

If this is a direct copy paste of her restrictions ...

Must not be looking for Hang Out
Must not be looking for Talk/E-mail
Must not be looking for Long-term
Must not be looking for Other Relationship
Must not be looking for Friendship
Must not be looking for Intimate Encounter
Must not be looking for Activity Partner

lmfao she has everything blocked so no one can reply

... then you missed one - She has allowed people who have selected Dating to contact her.

but every user has to pick one to even be on the site

    how dumb is that

It's Not dumb because the system won't allow you to block the ones you seek - you're seeking to Hang Out - right? Try ticking off the box in your mail settings that will disallow people who are looking to hang out from contacting you - the system won't allow it - nice try though.

Now, given that she's got "Hanger Outers" blocked, it shouldn't matter anyway since all her email contact restrictions should be lifted if she made first contact.

Copy paste to a reply here, the exact message that you get when you try to reply to her ........

Ensure your account is password protected with something stronger than your pet, children's names and or birthdays.

Make sure your PC has been thoroughly checked for trojans virsus' or key loggers.

Ensure, that if you have a wireless internet connection, that it too be password protected.

Don't share your account or PC. If that's not possible, ensure that you logoff from POF properly using the logoff links.

    Creating an Event Post
    Posted: 11/8/2009 8:31:03 PM

All this nonsense could be minimized if the link to the POF Event and Event Hosting Rules could be made universally available in all the locals the same way the Acceptable Use and Posting Rules are in every forum.

    OR

that a check be put in that if you haven't posted the minimum number of events, you can't post here - the same way events are auto moved for a user once they hit the minimum number of posted events (obviously some counter is on everyone's profile to be checked prior to an auto move)

... but then again, hardly anyone reads anything ... sigh ... losing uphill battle.

I clicked the "Add me to this list" and it looked like nothing happened other than, "You're added to the list"

When you click on the link DATE NIGHT, (or HERE ) people will now see that you are available for a Friday night date - it just acts as another form of search and you appear in the list.

Go ahead and click on it now - you'll see a list of any women in your area that are willing to go on a date next Friday night.

As to if they will really go out with anyone, will of course depend on compatability - in reality, all that the feature is meant to convey, is that they have next Friday night open.

    Potentially helpful mail rules
    Posted: 11/7/2009 11:38:06 PM

With any ask of a service, there is always a reason provided in order for the service to render a decision and explain its reasoning for that decision.

    Potentially helpful mail rules

    1. You can't initiate a new contact if you have "unread mail from a new contact" or "read mail from a new contact and not responded to" (e.g. you can't make a new contact if you haven't gone through people trying to make contact with, so either reply or delete it).

... and how would this be potentially helpful?

    2. You can't initiate more then say 5 new contacts a day.

... again, what would the reasoning be for this request

Forget it, you have both completely missed the point and I'm not going to waste my time arguing.

... if you don't explicitly state your why or point, how can the site render a decision on the validity of your request.

    Debate is welcome.

When tested, your theme works exactly the same as with my profile - picture or not.

Granted , the themes are really only noticable with screen resolutions from about 1280 by 1024 and up, before you start seeeing some of the skin.

Every time I post up a solid colored swatch, so to speak, it is deleted with remarkable efficiency.

Is There a Way to Be Online Without Anyone Seeing I am Online
    Posted: 11/6/2009 12:11:29 PM

However, every time I get online anyone I write to can see that I am online.

If you've hidden your profile, then you won't show up in any searches. However, if you are on other people's favourites, or you have people on your favourites, then they can tell when you are online, give or take a few minutes.

Remove yourself from other's lists, and remove everyone from your list, and that should effectively keep your site movement hidden.
