"Green"...yeah...I suppose...but then again...golf isn't "green" either....how many chemicals and dyes are used on those fairways and greens?
Wonder what is the "greenest" sport? (I choose booger flicking!)

Dad or Jail?
Posted:
11/22/2009 7:14:04 PM
Whoa...way wrong! Just because a parent is "non-custodial" doesn't mean they gave up their parental rights! Those are separate issues in Quebec. I don't have custody of my kids. I was/am involved in their lives. I was listed as the primary parent for both kids for a reason...because I was! Courts don't see things the same way! I certainly am not or ever was a threat to the kids...or anyone else for that matter.
In this case mentioned, quit blaming 'dad' for the kids behaviour. Probably "dad" was trying to instill some discipline and sense of responsibility into the kid, who resents it to no end! Mommy can't control him. He does as he wants when he wants. But not at dad's...so he doesn't want to go there!
I've run into the same problem with my kids. Then the ex and I got a great idea....and worked on it. The kids don't get the choice to visit or not...even the judge can't stop it. The PARENTS ( the ex and I) took responsibility for the kids and actually told the kids what they were going to do, when they were going to do it, and no back-talk about it!
It works.
Sure...the one kid resented it for awhile...too bad. It wasn't held against him while he was visiting...but there was no putting up with any disrespect, backtalk or such behaviour. Such actions brought consequences. Like computer time suspended for a week! Meaning at "moms" and "dads" respective homes.
She has her house rules, I have mine. Kids follow the rules where they are at that time.
Now, she had a habit of talking about me to her friends and family members within earshot of the kids. I mentioned it to her, cause I was getting some feedback form the kids...and not good stuff. "Mom says you...blah,blah, blah..." The kid gets told "What are YOU doing listing into your mothers PRIVATE conversations? You don't have that right, and she is going to know that you are spying on her!" Why get mad about what she says to someone else, even if the kids overhear? So, I inform her...she starts to make sure the kids are OUT of earshot while she is bad-mouthing me...things work out ok with the kids!
This case...military school the kid. Why juvenile detention? Some say it is "scary"...maybe it is. Maybe it is supposed to be that way so that the kid doesn't WANT to go back. (Much like jail used to be until it became a better lifestyle than what the working poor can afford for themselves.)
Just a taste of it by the judge, and maybe this kid will back down..knowing the adults won't put up with his crap any longer. Neither parent seems to be capable of controlling the kid.

Ooooooo...shiny things go fast in a circle! Make loud noise!
I dunno.
I suppose they try to outcompete each other. It is fast...noisy....lot of pollution.....certainly isn't a "green" sport at all.
Not many would go if it was, say, only solar powered vehicles allowed.
Never really saw the attraction to it though. I've known some who love it. Met some drivers. They enjoy it. So, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Smoking, who to blame!

Smoking is NOT a right in Canada. In fact, if incarcerated at a provincial prison (usually only up to 2 years or something like that), you cannot smoke there. Federal, where you are serving longer time, you can smoke.
Odd stuff.....
It's up to the individual.

...then there are those who spend the two bucks a week...but have fun "choosing" numbers...
but some here seem to think that people who do this go blow the whole welfare cheque on it or some such drivel. (at least those who collect and aren't the working poor! Which some feel is the majority....)

Ever Tree Plant Before?
Posted:
11/21/2009 7:14:17 PM
I've noticed a lot of blight here on maples. Syrup production going down. Some growers are trying to replace trees, but the blight isn't letting up....so maybe 5-10 years for a tree and replace it.
Oaks..haven't seen anything wrong. Planted a couple maples..lost them...but the oak does ok.
Fruit trees....tried a few...they did well...till the ex got hold of them. Now...not so good. Moving them to bad locations after they had been established didn't help matters, and the itme of year she did it didn't help.
the bio-diversity of tree plantings seems to be something that isn't looked at much. In a "natural forest" some species of tree are affected while others of the same species are not. Protected by genetics I suppose. But, they take one tree and use a bunch of seed from it. They don't use different ones. Faster growing trees are used way more. Slower growing ones are ignored.
I've seen some chestnut trees and walnuts. Not too many of those around though.
Fruit trees of various types are usually the backyard things that are cut down and discarded by new owners or when the tree "gets out of hand".

So mommy can't control sonny boy? And he's headstrong. Sounds very familiar.
How about court ordered military school? That way neither parent will have to "control" the kid, and both will have equal access, and he'll be getting the discipline he needs.

Is the pollution debate centering around carbon dioxide as a bait and switch?
Posted:

Coal....coal dust is explosive. I wonder if it was ground up fine enough if it could be "sprayed" and burned, like oil in a furnace.
Temperature fluctuations are the norm for this planet. Ice ages followed by melting...it goes on and on. Sea levels rise, and lower.
The big stink is about $$$!!!! How much money is poured into the coastlines of any nation today? Harbours for shipping, and pleasure boats, and factories, warehouses, etc, etc. How much is an ocean-side condo, or, god forbid, a house worth on todays market? Some of the man-made islands with multi-million dollar homes on them. With a lot of lowlands and cities built on them, a LOT of $$$ are in jeopardy.
This is what is so scary. So what if the coastline creeps up? Take a cue from the Dutch and build dikes and such things. Can you see NYC as Venice? With streets flooded and boats as cabs?
Hmmm.warmer areas..longer growing seasons, more fresh water available because of the "shrinking ice caps". More land available as Antartica becomes de-iced. yes...some places are drier. But many were already fairly dry, and poor lands for farming.
All we really need is a better food distribution network and some dam and dike dollars.
Mankind got through these kinds of things before, we'll do it again.

Well doesn't that take the cake! Someone tries to use observation and follow curves to chart numbers for the lottery. Creates a 20 number universe out of that, scoring 3+ numbers for most draws, and gets called names because he isn't following the " Statistical analysis" formula that some people totally believe in.
I am NOT selling information (though it would be a great idea...thanks guys!) I play my numbers...but not as much as I'd like to. I have fun with them.
I don't tell people they are going to hit the jackpot. I always try for the lesser prizes...which surprises some people. I've managed to hit the 6 numbers and the bonus number in my 20 number universe.
Over 70% of the adult population in Canada playing the lottery, and we're all "stupid undereducated poor folks".
If there is anyone out there wanting to check a 20 number universe, let me know! E-mail me. I'll need your lottery and where it's played. I'll even send you a list of full lines and may even filter them for you. Powerball excluded.....that one is a total witch to try out. I can only do so much and am still researching that lottery.
As to those who feel the lottery is a scam or rip-off or a "tax on the stupid"...fine. Keep feeling that way. I'll even defend your right to think that. But, I will ask to cut the name calling to a minimum.

Planted a few like that described by the OP. But I've also planted hardwoods and fruit trees too. I prefer them over the softwoods because they seem to "enrich" things more. Maples give sap all their lives for syrup, any fruit tree can bear fruit or nuts to be enjoyed, etc, etc.
Not many plant like that though. There are a few...but nothing huge. I'd love to see a tract of maples and oaks started by a lumber company. I've never heard of them doing so though.

Dad or Jail?

Have to agree with Rax on this one. The kid was COURT ORDERED to see his father. He refused, so gets punished. We'd be hearing a different tune if that court order was a restraining order against a male from seeing a female! "The guy needs to go to jail!". Thats what we'd be hearing. Well...this young guy broke a court order and went to "jail". Lets hear about that!
Probably dad is stricter with the rules and sonny-boy doesn't like that. Too bad. The court heard it, figured it wouldn't hurt the kid at all to see his father, and put the order into effect.
Unless the kid can show just cause to NOT see his father, his father has MORE right to see his son than the son has the "right" to NOT see his father. Who's rights get upheld here? A fathers? Or some misguided kids?
I think the judge made the right decision. The kid needs to know that his parents rights are NOT to be violated. He needs to know that a court order MUST be followed. Otherwise...there are consequences.

Depressed Women from Quebec and Facebook
Posted:

Wow. Sounds about right for Quebec though.
Injured workers are less able to defend themselves against the deep pockets of employers, gov't, insurance companies, so many times people get cut or denied benefits. Appeals seem to fall on deaf ears, IF the people can make it that far! It usually takes several months to get to that stage...meanwhile the injured is without money coming in, bills piling up, etc, and creditors are not going to wait. They will chew you up and spit you out. Seizing cars, homes, anything you own and auctioning it off is a way of bill collecting here that is used. If you wind up on the street with just the clothes on your back, it means nothing to the gov't here. They just shrug you off, and leave you to crawl off and die, or actually try to work, IF you can geta job that you can handle.
As far as facebook is concerned....why put out anything on there you wouldn't want overheard at the workplace? Seems foolish to do so! So DON'T.

College- A Dream Deferred.. Once Again, Penalizing the Poor

Well...considering that MOST jobs don't need degrees, weeding out a bunch of hopefuls is totally appropriate. This forces them into lesser jobs that need to be done anyways. Also, the competition for those jobs that DO require degrees will be somewhat lessened, meaning that they will be able to keep their wage levels up. A larger labour pool means a smaller wage.
Not to mention the costs of running a school have increased dramatically.

"Informed statistical analysis is a skill that you obviously don't possess."....wrong. I did take college level courses in just that. Guess you missed the post where I mentioned it, and said that "all the balls have the SAME chance of being drawn".
" There will be grouping."...yes...there is. You said it yourself. I said it. I also said that I take advantage of that fact that we BOTH agree happens and utilize it to help select numbers!
"What you're doing is irresponsible & dangerous." Check ANY web page that has "lotto tips" on it, and you will see that they ALL say "lottery is gambling, and is addictive." Also says "There is NO way to predict the draws." Also, you will note they say "Helps select numbers MORE LIKELY to come up." Which is what I do. Nobody has their arm twisted to use this system. Nobody is told "You WILL win the mega-jackpot!" It WILL say you will win a prize MORE often, than simply making pretty patterns on a selection slip or such things.
"Yes they do, and no they don't. We've explained that in any random number generator data set, there WILL be clustering of certain numbers. This is EXPECTED."
Jeeze, contradictory or what?(Who's contradicting themselves now?) Of course there is clustering. Capitalize on that aspect and USE it to help select numbers. Increase the chance of a win that way, rather than going way out there on a limb and making a selection that has less chance of coming up. (Also know as riding a wave. It gives out, sooner or later...hopefully you catch it just before it peaks and play it through. ) Kind of like playing the stock market....which way will it go....nobody knows for sure....
"Anyhow's...mathematically speaking....no...you can't increase your odds."
"You realize you've just contradicted yourself right?"
No...I didn't contradict myself at all. Using math you CANNOT increase your chances. By using observation and following the clusters, etc, you CAN, and DO increase your chances for a win.
Statistically you cannot "foretell" which numbers will come up. But you can make a series of selections to increase your chances.
Again...a short explaination.
By cutting the TOTAL number of possible selections you increase YOUR odds of getting a prize-winner. Maybe 10 bucks...maybe more. Out of, say 13 million selections, I cut ALL the ones that have sequential numbers. How many possible selections do I have? I further pare them down by other means. Meaning, YOU get to select out of 13 million possible lines of numbers, while I have a smaller pool to select from.
Because the draws ARE random, you have as much chance as I do...except that I have far more chances of hitting a win than you do because I was able to put MY money on selections that are MORE probable to come up!
If we both started with 10 bucks worth of tickets, there is a high probability I would hit a prize before you did using MY methods as compared to "leaving it all to chance".
You keep saying "No, there isn't! You can't prove it mathematically". But by observation, I can....
Never underestimate the power of simple observation. Drawing a conclusion from that may be fallacy...but....you may well be a lot closer to the truth than the next guy who refuses to believe his own eyes!

Jeremy and James...I do understand where you are coming from. (Thought the penny analogy was a good one.) Yes...I would bet on heads.
I 'get it'...always have.
I still say that there is "more of a chance" of getting a winner by using my methods.
Another things I've noticed is that they change the balls 10 at a time. Usually all from the same "decade". 1-10, 11-19, 20-29, etc. Quite often 3 or more of them turn up on the draw they change them. Better bounce? Who knows? It is a factor, a variable, that can change the outcome of a draw. I use it. Along with a few other things to influence my choices.
There are some sites that choose a 20 number universe. Out of that they can "wheel" the numbers. How they choose is anyone's guess. Often they have 3 or more of the numbers drawn. (Six ball lottery.) They have cut their number choices by over half, and have still retained the ability to choose some combination of winning numbers.
I can do the same thing, only with a bit better results.
Anyhow's...mathematically speaking....no...you can't increase your odds...but with observation and a few tips and tricks, you still get to increase your chances. Keep on denying it. It doesn't make the real world any different. But your mathematical world won't be upset or changed. The real world doesn't run on an equation. Variables always affect it.

A math question: Is there any way to increase your odds when buying lottery tickets?
Posted:

"No. You CANNOT increase your chances of winning in the lottery in any way."
I disagree, as do many others. I've outlined certain things that can and DO help generate a better chance of winning.
"By that I mean SOME number will be chosen more often than another, but that particular number is RANDOM in itself."
But WHICH number gets chosen? Would it be better to choose THAT number than the one that ins't chosen as often? Of course!
"THEY DO... you just don't understand what you're seeing. If you think that over a long history every ball should have come up the EXACT SAME number of times you are WRONG and don't have a clue about math or statistics. "
I know exactly what I'm seeing. Mathematically, they should come up "around" the same number of times, at a future point. They don't though. Why? Again, I don't know. As is, I only have about a 27 year period to work with. It is somewhat "cyclic" as far as which balls come up most often, etc. But, cycles repeat. Meaning this month a ball may not be so good, but next month it may be. Watching it over the years shows this kind of behaviour pattern. I take advantage of that.
.". much like Observation PROVED that the universe revolves around Earth and that if you sail too far out to sea you'll fall off the planet."
Oh please...don't be so foolish. Observation showed the exact opposite of what you stated. Superstition and religious dogma were used to spread that kind of BS around.
"This sounds suspiciously like the adult equivalent to shutting your eyes, covering your ears, and shouting, "Na! Na! Na! Na! Na!""
Not at all. I have fun making my observations. I harm nobody. Sure...I "see patterns" where, in mathematical reality, none exist. But...if those "patterns" follow along a certain path, why wouldn't I follow to see where it goes?
"THE ONLY WINNING STRATEGY FOR THE LOTTO (and Thermonuclear War) IS NOT TO PLAY."
Errr...you can't win IF you don't play. As far as "thermonuclear war" is concerned....it HAS been played, many times over. The results were not for a good prognosis, so, it was never implimented. (I saw the same movie. The computer played that game and decided to NOT start anything it couldn't win.)
Whereas, in the lottery, there ARE winners, every week.
So, in fact, there ARE ways to increase your odds of "winning" .Perhaps not the main prize...but a win of some kind. Certain "strategies" and ways of looking at the numbers can and do give players an edge over those who let the machine pick the numbers for them. (Although I have been reading up on how the machine picks those numbers. Seems they use a certain amount of "filters" such as I use!)
Nobody is saying "Here is a way to GUARANTEE you becoming a millionaire on the next lotto draw!" Total BS. But....I can say, using this method, you CAN increase your chances of getting a win.
There is just too much evidence pointing towards that to ignore it.
Sure, I wish I could express it mathematically. I can't. I can express mathematically that every draw that is supposedly random, has a high probability of actually BEING so. Also, that each ball has the same chance of dropping at any given time. But they don't. That's where I take advantage of that fact. A glance at any chart that shows the number of times a the balls have dropped shows that clearly.
So you either take the "longshot" bet, choosing numbers least likely to pop up, or you take a more conventional attitude and try to choose those which have proven themselves to be more likely to pop up.
It won't and can't work all the time, because of the "random factor". I posted a couple exceptions earlier to show that I know and understand that. But, more often than not, the numbers I generate WILL pop up on a draw in such a way that a prize may be won, if and only if that line of numbers was played!

"No, she's right: People have strong herd-instinct. People tend to behave as sheep. There may have been a time when that trait was adaptive for survival. Now, I'm not so sure. In any case, it's exactly as she said."....a classic example of the "sheeple" mentality. We expect someone else to enforce the laws, protect us, make our lives a "cradle to grave" enterprise for business and government.
Mankind wasn't made for that.
We are explorers, daredevils, warriors, your basic "curious monkey". Sure...we need laws and protection and such. But we need to balance that with the ability to protect ourselves, our families and homes, not only from criminal elements, but from government interference, and from corporate interests.
We can't do a lot of that now. We've come down a path that may well be leading us to an apathetic view of life.
Take the whole idea of voting. How many lost their lives to gain that right? How many actually exercise it? How many care to discuss political issues? Total apathy on the most part.
We often find now that "What is good for business is good for society!" No...not necessarily. We still treat the injured as second class citizens, along with the elderly. We simply warehouse them, or let them drop through the social safety net. Families don't give a rat about them, IF they have any family left.
Being "politically correct" has run roughshod over respecting others ways of life and customs.
We've picked a terrible path to follow....and the future generations are the ones who'll have to pick up the pieces.

"Beat the lottery"??? I've never claimed that. What I said was I could increase the chances of getting a win...and have done so. Pretty simple. It doesn't mean a definite win of the jackpot. It does mean that those who play along with me have a better chance of winning something, than the chances, say, from a machine generated ticket which could contain any series of numbers.
You don't have to believe it. Mathematically, it doesn't make sense. But observation has brought out some oddities which I take advantage of. When I point one out, I still get hung by someone who figures that a "p" value is worth far more than years of observation.
Mathematically, each ball should come up at about the same rate. They don't. Some come up with others more frequently too. Some come up better during different months. It can even be broken down to dates when certain numbers come up more frequently than can be explained by the math.
Why this is, I don't know. (I've said that before too!) But observation has proven it, so I'll continue on working with those observations, rather than trying for a math formula.
Agree or disagree, doesn't matter. When certain things are staring you in the face, you either accept or reject them.
Perhaps I should write a book......

Yeah, non-consecutive number sequences are more likely than consecutive ones. That doesn't translate into "3,17,26,29,37,44" being more likely than "1,2,3,4,5,6"."
I've read that statement...reread it. Looked at it upside down.
WTF???
Perhaps I should say something like ANY non-consecutive sequence IS more likely to come up than a consecutive one.
Oh...just for fun...the sequence of 3, 17, 26, 29, 37, 44 has won just over $700.00 since the 649 was launched. The 1,2,3,4,5,6 sequence has won just under $500.00 for the same timeperiod. (Told ya, I've been tracking things.... )
Guess the proof is in the winnings huh?

Maybe that's where we get anti matter from. It is such a small amount...and perhaps the matter shipped via a blackhole to "the other side" is "anti-matter" over there. Because the universe is such a uge place, these small amounts being exchanged have little effect...and won't have a cumulative effect.

Walmart sets its sights on ruling the retail world.

I am not positive about this, but I seem to remember hearing that Walmart had 10% of total sales across America. That's a stunning number!
I don't like shopping Walmart. I don't like their business practices, nor the way they treat employees. Keeping them as part timers for years, even though the employee wants full time, just to cut benefits. IF they try to unionize, they shut the store down and move out.
Forcing manufacturers to move their operations to China.
Sure...they make a fortune doing this kind of thing. That is what a business is supposed to do...make money! But at what cost?
Jobs lost...in manufacturing and from the smaller competitors that are driven out of business.
One thing I find odd is the "green movement" who's members flock to this store to buy stuff! The environmental costs of shipping all that stuff from China, plus the landfill it takes to dispose of the cheap stuff that wears out or breaks within a short period of time. You'd think the greenies would catch on and boycot the place!
China is fast becoming a huge carbon footprint exceeding most other countries, just when many industrialized countries are really eyeballing cutting back carbon emissions, if not actively doing it!
I'd love to see a third of the shelf space devoted to "Made in Canada/USA" products....which could be legislated by law. Canada has done that with television....has to have Canadian Content, blah, blah, blah....forcing a privately owned business to force more Canadian stuff down our throats, rather than actually showing something people want to watch!

"It's too early for the saccharine coated songs."...well...can always check out the **stardized versions on you-tube! Good for a chuckle any time of year!
Two weeks to the Christmas party here...so some decorations are going up. Fine by me.
I know Knobette will be having a ball decorating...she always does!
I can't believe they ****ed about a lighted tree at Halloween though...will they do the same about Xmas tree? (Yeah, so what if we decorate a tree at Halloween? Wanna make something of it? :P) (You should see what we decorate it with! LOL!)
Those who figure it to be "too expensive" and "commercialized" don't need to participate in those aspects of it. Save the bucks and visit home for the holidays. (If there is one to go to.) Maybe just do something nice for someone.

A math question: Is there any way to increase your odds when buying lottery tickets?

29 30 31 32 1
32 33 34 35 2
43 44 45 46 1
44 45 46 47 1
Since 1982 these are the ONLY times 4 consecutive numbers have come up. (numbers followed by times they have come up) As anyone can see, it doesn't happen very often.
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec
25 21 27 13 23 24 29 33 28 32 31 23
That is the listings by month for the number 13 since 1982. Please note that in April it does NOT come up near as often as it does in other months.
Tracking the numbers can be fun. "Empirical evidence"? Anyone asking for it is standing on shaky ground, and they know it. So when a bit is tossed their way, they dismiss it with some other bit of blindness...like "P" values! Good lord.
We tried that in a math class..."P" values for lottery numbers...well..they all turned out the same. Duh....Meaning each and every one of them have as good a chance of being drawn as the next. That is a given. I cannot argue that. Fine...dandy. I sure can't explain why 13 doesn't come up as much in April though! But I can USE that fact to help me pick lines. Along with a few other useful tips and oddities I've seen by simply tracking the numbers! So life experience DOES have meaning here. (What it means I dunno...having too much fun doing this!
)
It doesn't mean I am going to hit a jackpot. I can take my 49 number universe, cut it down to size, and shape lines up that follow a bunch of "regualtions" and play them. Sooner or later the statistical data will prove itself out. I've managed to pick out all 6 numbers...just not on the same lines. I figured out why it was like that and made my adjustments. I have learned that sometimes you can "filter" things too far!
Anyhow's...no...there is no "secret formula" to win the lottery...just ways to improve your chances of walking away with a prize rather than tossing a non0winner in the garbage or pinning it to the "losers wall", as a monument to your dedication to paying a "dummies tax"!

they've been putting decorations out in stores since before Halloween here. A lot of places have their Christmas parties in November now.
If they want to put up decorations outside while the weather is still half decent, rather than facing -10 with a windchill factor of -65, fine by me!
Anyone who gets offended by "Merry Christmas" need not acknowledge it then...but they sure aren't going to take away my right to say it!

go re-read post 63, especially the last three paragraphs.
Again, I say, there are certain numbers more likely to come up, in a certain combination than others.
Why this is so, I can't be sure of. I've looked at the charts, checked the numbers, I know about random factors. There is not much to say why this happens. I know there may be a reason for it, it doesn't "just happen". I just don't have the data to say why it happens.
Here are some "facts" about the 649 draw in Canada.
The number 13 is rarely drawn in the month of April. (Why? I don't know! but it HAPPENS!)
In Canada, winners do NOT pay Income Tax on the winnings, only on the interest earned on the principal in subsequent years. (I can only chuckle....dumb americans allow their lottery winnings to be taxed.......hehehehehe)
If your numbers start with 24 or higher, your chances of winning the jackpot are extremely slim. The same goes for any numbers that end in 26 or less. (Notice...."slim chances"...in comparison to the regular chances....)
Approximately 72-74% of adult Canadians or more than 16 million people play the lotteries. Of this number, around 50% buy Quick Picks chosen by the lotteries' computers. (Lot of 'poor' folks who get 'taxed' extra huh? Maybe we should apply for statehood!)
Per adult population, Nova Scotians gamble the most, followed by Saskatchewans.
The highest frequently drawn number, 31, appears the most in the 4th position. (Again...why? Agan, no answer..it just is, so we use that to help us pick a winning line!)
The Best 2 Numbers, 20 with 43, also show up quite frequently in the Overall Best 3 Numbers and seem to be drawn more with 1st position numbers, 9 and 2. (Why? I dunno...but use information like this to help pick lines!)
Since the beginning of Lotto 6/49, 6 out of 10 draws have had at least one repeating number from the immediate previous draw.
At least one Prime Number has been drawn in 90% of all draws. (Wow...lot of draws with prime numbers huh?)
The most popular drawn combination of Odd and Even numbers has been 3 Odd and 3 Even. (really? So if we pick all odd or all even, our chances "mathematically" should be the same...but they aren't Hmmm..interesting hummmm? )
As I said...we take what we see and work with it to make choices. Whoever brought up "Bermuda Triangle" well.....how many people chose to NOT go through that area becasue of its reputation and may have saved their own lives? None? Some? A lot? You don't know...neither do I.) But...I DO know that making choices as far as the lottery is concerned can be fun. Filtering out combinations and such also makes it a bit of fun. I enjoy working with it and screwing around with the numbers. I follow the draws and track the tendancies, and play following those "regulations" I have stated and then some I haven't!
A "tax"...perhaps.....but go ask a winner of a major prize if it was worth it? Ask the thousands of organizations the lottery corporation has and does help out. Ask those who enjoy playing it.
Bunch of "negative nellies" here lately....no sense of adventure and totally pessimistic! Ah well...me and my friends will continue on!

Jeremy...no..I don't "find a pattern" in the sequence. If I did I'd be freakin' rich, now wouldn't I?
Very rare for ALL prime numbers to come up, although in many draws at least one does!
Here's the results from a couple of recent draws.
7 number draws, out of 47 available numbers.
8,18,27,28,38,41,48. bonus 36
2,7,8,11,16,17,18. bonus 12
Ok...first set every "8" available was drawn. An anomaly. Extremely rare for this to happen, with any numeral.
The next shows the highest number drawn as 18....again, rare. Very rare. Out of over 400 draws this has never happened with the Canadian 649, BUT with the Canadian Maximillion, it happened within the first 10 drawings!
What I am saying is that certain numbers are "more likely" to turn up....proven already.
Also, that certain lines should be avoided simply becasue they probably will NOT come up...like sequences of 6. You don't pick ALL even or ALL odd numbers either. Proven statistically to come up far less often than other choices.
Basically, choosing those that win MORE often increases the chances of getting a win. It's really very simple!
"The ONLY way that picking 123456 is crazy compared to any other number combination is if it isn't random"....totally wrong. Unless you deliberately want to lose. I'd rather play a line that has a better chance of turning up! Most people would! "Totally random" doesn't apply near as much....where statistics do apply far more.
Increase chances with higher probability combinations makes winners. Simple fact.
As far as the mathematics of "random drawings" and such is concerned...well...they say you can prove anything with numbers. (Ok...I know better than that...but it is still funny!) The mathematics "proves" that 1,2,3,4,5,6 has as MUCH chance of turning up as any other combination of numbers. BUT, here's the part most people who argue against me do not get....LIFE EXPERIENCE and ACTUAL EVENTS tracked over the years PROVE different.
Anyone get a lightbulb over their heads now?
"What about 2,7,14,23,34,47? Oh wait, those are all squares minus 2, better not pick those either."...why not pick those numbers? Lets take a look at them.
3 odd numbers and 3 even ones. The highest combination of winning in the statistical world of lotteries. That is good.
You have at least one number in each "decade" (ones. tens, twenties, etc.) Good.
No three+ sequences...good.
There are prime numbers...good. They turn up in many a draw, although most often only one or two.
The total is 127...fa;l;s within the range of "highest winning combinations. Good.
I'd say that line is a good one...so far.
Now...to further "filter it", we'd have to check to see how often they turn up within the month, or even how often on that day! What numbers come up most often with each other? Is there a better set of numbers? (Sure...the winning ones would be nice...hehehehe)
So..."doing the math" can pay off.

Holy crap. Statistics? You guys are arguing that for lottery draws?
Of course there are some numbers that come up more often than others. It's been charted and proven.
It is also known you CAN increase your odds of winning by choosing these numbers. It is also known that to further increase the chances you run your lines of numbers through "filters".
Say the "odds" are 1 in 13 million of winning a jackpot. Fine. 13 million lines of numbers to choose from. How to go about it?
Random draw theory says that ANY line of numbers can come up. yes...they can...but the chances of certain lines coming up are way out there, in comparison to others.
Ina 49 number draw where 6 numbers are drawn...should we play 1,2,3,4,5,6? Ummm..probably not eh? Any 6 numbers in sequence? No....don't think so. How about all from the same "decade"...meaning all twenties or thirties or whatever? Probably not. We've started eliminating a LOT of lines using just those two criteria. That is what gives us an "edge" over someone who thinks "Oh...it's random, and statistics have nothing to do with the numbers coming up!" These are the losers.....or those who don't play.
you can draw your numbers form a margerine tub and win big. Or, take a few minutes and see what numbers have been turning up, and how the lines look. All odd numbers? All even numbers? Not good...eliminate them. Yes...they have won....but very little.
Increase the odds by eliminating the lines LEAST likely to show up. Any edge will put ahead of those who don't bother.
Feel free to drop me an e-mail about it.

The dumbing down of society and its impact on children and public mindset towards intelligence
Posted:

They used to tie things together for learning lessons. Reading, math, science, geography could all be linked, making it far easier for the student. Example, reading. We read about the advent of Red Fife wheat. Where is was developed and who, etc, etc. Geography...we studied the praries. Math, we were studying measurements. Science we were sprouting seeds and such things. History was tied in with the "dustbowl times" of the thirties.
All tied in. It worked.
Today things are spread all over the place. Students have to "shift gears" while changing classes.
Guess there was something to be said about the one room schoolhouse. We're probably the last generation to actually see this as part of a "normal school board"...and not some religious school or some such where they still exist.
Ok...who said something about a 99% literacy rate? Total BS! Just because a kid can write their own name and add two small numbers together and almost read an average newspaper means little.
We've dumbed down the average reading level for the public anyways! It was necessary because the students couldn't understand the news!

Anyone play poker at pokerstars?

Must be an obscure site he plays from. Most sites have "bot watchers"....making sure someone isn't running a program to play for them. Lots of ways for them to catch this.
I've read up a bit on on-line poker...it isn't "all math" or "all" anything else. there IS a certain amount of skill or luck needed.
Some people do make it a huge hobby...some even a moneymaking enterprise for themselves.
You have the people coming in to play because their friends do, or to "try it out", or because poker seems to be the "hot" thing to do now.
I can't imagine anything more boring (except for watching tennis, gold, or fencing). than watching a poker game. You want to actually participate. It's like watching someone else play a video game. You don't get to play...just watch!
Totally out there...yet there is enough people willing to watch that they actually televise games.

Suicides increase as foreclosures rise
Posted:
11/13/2009 7:16:24 AM
During bad times suicide rates always increase. When the stock market crashed in '29, people had to be careful walking down the street in case some broke investor landed on them! The sky was dark from falling bodies! (Ok...maybe not that bad...but it WAS bad!)
Lots of soldiers end it all, often because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. When you see to much, do too much, or have too much happen to you, it kind of blows your mind.
I've always figured it was a long term solution to short term problems though.

kids today and yesterday
Posted:
11/13/2009 7:12:56 AM
I don't think kids are "lazy" today. Perhaps too much of a sense of entitlement though. They can have their own credit cards by age 10! Cell phones, iPods, whatever. They "have to be" in constant touch with everyone! Lord help them if they fall off the grid for a day or two.
Parents bring this on themselves. Many of them have that same sense of entitlement....and screwing the other guy to get what you want is the norm!
Lie. steal, cheat your way...this is the way to get what you want from life...and this is what the kids are learning.
Movies that idolize criminal behaviour has done nothing to help society. Hey...if you are a criminal, you live better than the average working person...so why bother when you can have it all, have it now, and let someone else do the worlk of keeping society functioning.
Same with video games.
Sure...as kids we used to disappear after breakfast and get home by supper. There is little difference between then and now. All the dangers are still there. All the "likelyhoods" of something bad happening are still there. We 'overprotect" our kids now. In fact, I'd dare say that there is less danger out there for our kids to face in todays society.
But...there is far more to learn. Education has become a huge mountain...we do have to specialize to a degree. We can't go along getting a working understanding of a lot of things any longer, simply becasue of the depth of education needed for almost any vocation!

Controlling Ravenous Garden Snails
Posted:
11/13/2009 6:59:45 AM
Near thetfor Mines they have the giant African slugs...about the size of your hand. The scouts go out every year on a "bug hunt" and collect as many of them as possible, but cannot eradicate them.
Slugs...hmm...let's see. You've tried the beer and diatomaceous earth tricks eh? Well...there is another one.....
Try laying a few shingles down on the ground. (single ones) . Bend them a bit. Pick them up daily and place them in a container that has a bit of kerosene or some such in it. The slugs hide under the shingles during the day, so that's when to collect them. It cuts down on their population. A lot.
You can place a "shield" of shingles around your plants. The rough top keeps the slugs from crawling over them. (flat to the ground.)
I don't know what animals, if any, make slugs a part of their diet. Some birds, no doubt. Maybe snakes. But why import something that may become a bigger problem for you later?
Birds may eat them...but get into your crops too.....but...you could try attracting more birds to help keep the pests down. Place a couple feeders up. They'll know the area is a good hunting ground for them. Some sugar water containers too....not only hummingbirds are attracted to that, but other species too.
Good luck.

You guys can't afford a civil war, and everyone knows it. Some civil disobedience from right wing extremists maybe, but nothing that can't be handled on a state level.
I'd be more worried about street violence. Roving gangs and such. Oh...you guys already have that. Places the cops won't even go into. Too bad. The ghettoisation of the cities is what will bring down American culture...as it already is affecting it.
Urban renewal on a massive scale would probably offset most of it though.
