It looks like this is shaping up to be another fun event Balled Eagle, it sounds like the Band is going to rock the place.
By all reports, everyone had a great time at your first event.
It looks like quite a few out of towners are coming again, hopefully lots of locals will sign up also. For anyone who hasn't been to a POF event, they are lots of fun!

Comparing organic food vs. conventional food

Apparently cows are mostly fed cheap corn nowadays, which they aren't meant to eat at all.

Oh yes , organic strawberries taste like candy, I could never eat conventional ones after the organic .
I also eat organic baby carrots but had some conventional baby carrots at someone's house and didn't like them at all.
The Environmental Working Group website has a list of fruits and vegies with the most pesticide residues which they recommend buying organic.

Thanks ML1 and angiepie for organizing this event every month so us fishies can have so much fun.
The band was great, dance floor was packed but we just carried on dancing in the aisles.
It was so great catching up with everyone and meeting some newbies.
It was a pleasure meeting WesternWildRose and Balled Eagle, couldn't persuade WesternWildRose to stay, maybe next time and hopefully Balled Eagle will come back and party with us again.

what do you think of a woman who travels a lot?
Posted:
6/14/2009 6:52:03 PM
Very good question! I used to find when I was in my 20's, if I met some guy and went out on couple of dates with them and then went away on a long weekend to visit family, I wouldn't hear from them again.
A male friend explained it to me once but I no longer remember what he said.
Anyways, I can guess what your job is because I have the same or a related one and weasels wouldn't want it.
Easy peasy with the number of days off and banked OT to get the time off to travel.
Hang in there, there are all kinds of fish in the sea, maybe you will meet a like minded traveler or a less needy man.

Reusable water bottles NOT made in China?
Posted:
1/28/2009 1:43:21 AM
^^^^Lexan contains bisphenol A which can leach out of plastic bottles under certain conditions. It would only be BPA free if you bought it fairly recently and it said on the label that it was.
I know Nalgene now has BPA free polycarbonate bottles out on the market. However, some environmental web sites still don't recommend them as they are still a form of plastic.

Reuseable water bottles NOT made in China?
Posted:
1/27/2009 1:15:21 AM
OP, I have not found a source for stainless steel water bottles not made in China. But I do have some info that is quite reassuring about the bottles currently on the market.
NSF certification for stainless steel bottles does not involve testing for leaching.
The only potentially toxic material that may leach from stainless steel is nickel and the Type 304 stainless steel, leaches less than other types. There have been very few complaints from nickel sensitive people about reactions to stainless steel water bottles.
The tests from 1991, cited in the earlier post were conducted with reverse osmosis water which has been stripped of all its minerals. Ordinary tap water still has it's minerals so not the same type of substance at all. Reverse Osmosis water has a slightly acidic PH and tends to scavenge metals from whatever materials it comes into context with.
A Canadian scientist recently conducted some studies on Stainless Steel Bottles and Coated Aluminum Bottles on the market. He found they were harmless with respect to leaching of trace metals into drinking water.

Apparently, Klean Kanteen water bottles have recently been granted 3rd party certification by NSF. They had to make some minor adjustments to their bottles to be granted certification.
A person from an environmental group whom I contacted, is going to contact NSF to see if their certification permits any leaching.
I will post the info when I get it.

I own a few Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottles which are manufactured in China.
I e-mailed the Klean Kanteen company a couple of years ago and asked about possible contamination during the manufacturing process and I was told they do periodic checks on their products and they have never found any contaminants.
I also agree with Moutain Lion, can one believe what companies say.
I have stayed away from Sigg bottles as I was unsure about the baked enamel on aluminum concept, however I may have to do more research as I like the idea that they are manufactured in Switzerland.
I do like my Klean Kanteens for the fact that the screw top is also stainless steel, not plastic.
OP, I would be very interested in getting the name of the company in Ontario that is making Stainless steel bottles, you can send me an e-mail if you prefer.

When vanity kills
Posted:
1/11/2009 8:07:09 PM
I had a mole removed at the top of my breastbone a long time ago. It left a very faint, not noticeable scar. However, that mole was benign and was only removed for being a nuisance.
For a mole that is cancerous, they would have to cut more tissue away, so therefore a larger scar.

When vanity kills
Posted:

Tyeee, thanks for the important info that it is always wise to have unusual signs and symptoms checked out as early diagnosis can make a big difference in the outcome.
It sounds like this woman has stated that she didn't have the mole checked out because she didn't want to have a scar, that sounds like vanity to me as well. That is very sad, I am assuming now, that this woman would rather have a scar than the really awful situation she is now in.
Of course fear of a cancer or some other undesirable diagnosis, can also keep people from taking action, I have heard some sad stories from that as well.

Wrist bands / glow bracelets, do you want them?
Posted:
12/4/2008 12:56:28 AM
I certainly don't think anyone should ever be forced to wear a glow bracelet, name tag or anything else. People can choose their level of participation according to their own comfort levels etc.
I personally like the glow bracelets a lot at the events but I do not like the environmental impact.
I do drive to events but I don't think that means I shouldn't try and limit other impacts on the environment.
I find people are less receptive to name tags but they are also quite useful at events.
I cannot see how the glow bracelets could be recycled, they have chemicals in them and I do not know of any kind of recycling place that takes things like that but maybe I should e-mail the recycling hotline and see.
As for using them for crafts and decorating, we have had a few break at the events and I don't know if they stain or not.
Another consideration, the hosts have to pay for the bracelets themselves if the venue does not.
It sure would be nice to find a reusable solution to this. Maybe Spuds idea of something hung around the neck would work.

Do you wear ear plugs to a music concert?
Posted:
12/4/2008 12:43:59 AM
^^^White Tigress, my hair just happens to cover my ears so my friends have told me I am lucky as I don't have to think about the earplugs showing. I would wear them anyways, as my ears can't stand loud music and I am in a place with loud music nearly every Saturday.
And Yappy lil Pine Needle, I don't know how custom earplugs work exactly but when I have forgotten them and used foam ones, I did notice a difference in sound clarity. But for people who have never used custom ones, they wouldn't know any difference with the foam ones in.

Tyeee,
I got the custom made ear plugs at a store that also sells hearing aids.
I am lucky, I have hair long enough to cover my ears, so the earplugs are never visible. I think some of my male friends would like to wear them but don't like the idea of them being visible. I think they should wear them anyways, vanity isn't worth damaging one's hearing over.
I did see a couple of men at Firefighter's Club recently with foam earplugs in.

I purchased custom made earplugs many years ago for $70.00 and was that ever a worthwhile investment. I just can't take loud music and I am out listening to music and dancing pretty much every Saturday.
I think the foam ones do distort sound, but my custom ones don't. I have no idea what happens to the sound when my friends put screwed up bits of paper napkins in their ears for particularly loud bands.
I have read that noise over 80 decibals for 30 minutes or longer will damage your ears.

moving to BC!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted:

I completely disagree with the posters about Surrey having no nice areas, I can think of a few upscale areas that are very nice.
I also know an elderly lady who lives in Breakaway Bays Mobile home park, it is in South Surrey but bordering on White Rock and it is a very pleasant area. The Mobile Home park is kept up very nicely.
I am not sure about prices, I have heard $40,000 for single wides and then up from that for double wides, the pad rent is around $650.00 per month, which I think is a bit steep but I believe it includes electricity.
OP, good luck in your search, I hope you find something suitable.
And as you can tell, poking fun at Surrey is a bit of a hobby in Metro Vancouver.

Tolls taken off Coquihalla
Posted:
10/6/2008 6:27:22 PM
I take the Coquihalla a few times a year. I was nevered bothered by the toll, I had a choice of paying or going the other route. I was surprised when they removed the toll, maybe they should have chopped it in half, I imagine the winter maintenance of that highway is pretty costly.
I always worry when the government chops a source of revenue because of the health care monster which requires ever expanding amounts of tax dollars.

Hugs! Getting and giving them at Plenty of Fish events.
Posted:
9/24/2008 12:23:27 AM
I do not think it is a good idea to hug people you don't know. I find newbies are intimidated enough when arriving at an event for the first time and since you have lots of newbies, I say forget the hugs except for people you have gotten to know well through the event thread chit chat etc.
There is lots of hugging that goes on at fish events but for me, it is almost always between me and fishie friends.
I was hugged once by some inebriated male that I had never met before and my hair was left reeking of his cologne. Being sensitive to scented products, all I wanted to do was go home and wash my hair to get the smell out.
It isn't POF policy to greet people at the door, but it is commonly practiced at the events in Metro Vancouver and I think it is important. I have had many newbies tell me that if I hadn't greeted them at the door, they would have turned around and fled.
For Mountain Lion 1's next event, we will make sure he has his shoes shined and try to get a picture of him curtsying.

HEPA Air cleaners. Do they work? Worth the cost?
Posted:
9/15/2008 10:26:26 PM
I have a Bionaire Hepa air filter and I think it works just fine. I can't quote any studies off hand, but I am pretty sure I have seen some that show they remove pollen etc. It removes smoke odour that has infiltrated my place from neighbours.I have had it for 3 1/2 yrs and have only replaced the small filters, I haven't had to do the expensive cartridge yet. I pretty much use it every night except in winter, I don't bother much.
One needs to be aware of some Ionic air purifiers, Consumer Reports did a study around 2 years ago and noted that some of the ionic purifiers, emitted ozone. So you have asthmatics buying air purifiers which are emitting ozone which will make their asthma worse. Nice huh. So when the report came out, I saw a few stores all selling those things at half price to unload them on unwary customers.
I e-mailed Health Canada and asked if they shouldn't be removed from the market since they are a hazard to asthmatics, a group of people who are often counselled to buy air purifiers. They said they were monitoring the situation, which I think is a code for we aren't going to do anything.
The thing is a bit noisy on the highest setting but not too noticeable on the low, I think the newer models may be quiter though.

Quesnel BC get together,, ??
Posted:
9/14/2008 10:44:10 PM
^^^^foxyone1, the POF site says that only 3% of fishies look at the forums, so they recommend planning an event instead of putting out feelers. When you host an event, the admin sends out an e-mail to everyone in your area, letting them know about it.
You have a small population base, so your above post may not be seen by very many people from Quesnel.
If you want to host an event, read the how to host an event pages, it gives you all the info and shows an example of how to create the thread etc.
It is difficult to say how many people you would get out in your area due to small population but even with a few you may make some friends and find some people to do social things with .
Good luck, I hope the above helps. There are also lots of BC POF hosts who would be willing to answer any questions that you might have.

classic and all greens, you cannot contact each other , both of you are limiting e-mails to men only and there is one age cutoff that is also problematic. If you want to e-mail each other, you will both have to remove your restrictons, you can always change them back again later.

Otherwise you can send an e-mail to me with a contact number.

^^^^ The Starlight Casino has loads of parking all over, outside spaces, covered spaces, you will see the options when you drive in. I have never had a problem getting parking there by 8:00 PM, but hard to say what it will be like with so many fishies attending.

DANCE NIGHT at the MARINE PUB BURNABY SEPT 6th 2008

^^^ That is really too bad, you must have arrived when no one was leaving the pub. A few people left the pub before the fight was over so people seemed to be able to locate some kind of parking. L.

Thank-you B&TD for getting this event going, we had an awesome group of fishies, everyone was super about waiting for tables to become free, eventually they did and the band finally got going and so did the fishies
Thank-you to my co-host mysman and tjthegreat who helped with the glow bracelets. Thank-you to ~CARL LINGUS69~ for being the photographer.
And a very big thanks to stardust4u, our very own fishie of Sally And The Melo Hearts for the great music and dancing tunes.
The Pub has asked Sally And The Melo Hearts back for a gig in November so hopefully we will be able to get another event going then. Sally already asked the Pub for a night when there won't be an UFC event on.
