The recent Times Square bombing incident - Terrorism ?
Posted: 5/4/2010 3:07:55 AM
As to the lack of competence... some of the UK bombing attempts were (fortunately) hopelessly botched as well. It almost makes you wonder if these incidents aren't intended more as PR stunts than actual terrorist acts. Maybe someone is handing out deliberately defective bomb-making instructions.

Hotmail Junkmail???
Posted: 5/4/2010 2:56:02 AM
This may not apply, but... there's something out there that knows how to hijack your hotmail account to send spam to your contacts. I'm not sure if it's a virus or rootkit that lives on the computer, or just some clever code embedded in ads or web pages. It only happened a couple of times, several weeks apart, so I'm guessing it was some web page or ad. Changing my Hotmail password and not letting Firefox cache it will hopefully prevent this from happening again. This wasn't just a case of faking the sender; the spam was actually sent from my Hotmail account, and was in the "sent" items there.

vinyl records and turn tables
Posted: 2/6/2010 1:03:02 AM
There's a site called Needledoctor (something like that) which carries all kinds of replacement needles or cartridges. Proper quality needles can cost almost as much as the original cartridge, so it could make sense to get a whole new cartridge. There's an Audiotechnica and a Shure that are supposed to be great value, for around $100.

For buying records, and maybe cartridges and turntables as well, look for a store that (wait for it)... sells used vinyl. Yard sales can be good, if there's an intact original record collection being liquidated. Thrift stores are overstocked with middle-of-the-road dreck, but if you're lucky there can be real bargains on records (and turntables).

My favourite cleaning tools are a carbon-fibre brush that I use before each playing. The fine fibres get right into the groove and pick up the dust, and remove static. And a Watts stylus cleaner, used dry as needed. A really dirty stylus gets a Q-tip dipped in isopropanol. Really dirty records get a bath with dishwashing soap.

New security scanners.
Posted: 2/6/2010 12:34:24 AM
It beats stripping and dressing in disposable paper coveralls and adult diapers, then being locked in your seat for the entire flight. But that still does nothing about the sleeper agent who's qualified as a flight attendant or pilot or maintenance tech or air traffic controller. Or who works at the aircraft factory and has programmed a time-delayed bug into the fly-by-wire control system.

Really? Vaccines no, body scans yes? Really?
Posted: 1/7/2010 5:18:27 PM
Well, the way air travel security is going, before long we'll be stripping down and putting on disposable overalls and Depends before boarding, where we'll be locked into our seats for the duration of the flight. All luggage and clothes will travel on a separate flight.

That still won't work, because some derka derka boom whack job will get a job as a flight attendant or cleaner or pilot and kill everyone on board anyway.

Is this a Hate Crime ?
Posted: 1/7/2010 5:05:15 PM
I think it should be called a minor assault. Islam isn't a race, it's just another religion, make-believe like all the rest.

If ordinary Muslims are so peace-loving and horrified by violence, why do they tolerate imams in their community who preach violence and recruit their young people to train to be murderers?

AMD's Socket 939 form factor still alive?
Posted: 10/30/2009 1:22:13 PM
If the onboard video can decode Blu-ray and HD-DVD at 1080p, and if it does lossless audio over HDMI, what more do you need for an HTPC? If I had a receiver that was HDMI 1.3 capable, I'd consider putting this motherboard underneath the X2 3800+ that's currently in my H"D"PC.

I don't know, but I do know it's a really good idea to run a memory test overnight after upgrading or installing memory. It beats struggling with random lock-ups later on.

DVD soundtrack to CD?
Posted: 10/30/2009 12:46:18 PM
Usually the music is only stored on the DVD in that lowest quality form, AC3 at 48k samples/sec. Converting or recording it to "CD quality" PCM (16/44.1) just makes it compatible with audio CD players - it won't restore the quality lost when the music was reduced to AC3. Some concert DVDs include PCM (better than CD quality) tracks; any DVD audio ripper should give you the choice of using them instead of the compressed AC3 surround track. But, they'll be in 16bit/48k form, so to burn to CD, the track will have to be resampled to 44.1k.

Cassettes!! Bring them back please!
Posted: 8/2/2009 12:25:39 AM
I don't especially miss them. Prerecorded tapes weren't very good, due to being dubbed at high speed. They were originally designed by Philips for recording dictation in mono, not high-fidelity stereo music. It's a miracle of engineering that they sound as good as they do. My Technics portable stereo recorder was almost the size and weight of a portable VCR, and only ran a few hours on a set of C-cells, and cost an awful lot.

These are great days, though, if you do love cassettes. There's decent decks at thrift stores for $10 to $20, even Nakamichi (although the one I saw was worn and filthy). I've also seen bags of new blank tapes at thrifts.

I've found good working CD writers in a computer abandoned in an alley, and also in $20 computers at Salvation Army. You can often find bare drives at thrift stores too, and computer recyclers (like Freegeek) should have some. Or try posting a "wanted" message on Freecycle.

how do i trust my computer technician?.....
Posted: 7/23/2009 9:38:58 PM
Use a friend, or a coworker that'll help in exchange for a home-cooked meal (or beer & pizza). Next choice would be a business that does in-home service, so you can sit there and watch.

I had an acquaintance who claimed to have worked as a computer tech for a school. He said he used to steal memory out of the computers, and install viruses so he'd get called back to remove them. I assume there are still people like that around. And even if they're not criminals, they may be incompetent. I've seen far too many computers bought from local stores that were assembled improperly and doomed to fail prematurely.

Why is it that Corn Ethanol is the only type of Ethanol ever talked about?
Posted: 6/26/2009 12:33:46 AM
Any problems with transporting and using ethanol or methanol are trivial compared to the complications of dealing with hydrogen. I suspect all the hoopla about hydrogen is a cynical ploy to divert attention away from more practical alternative fuels that pose real threats to the oil business. A couple of scientists wrote a book a few years back proposing a methanol economy. Methanol is just wood alcohol, which not surprisingly can be made from stuff that isn't food, like wood. And it can be turned into something that works in diesel engines.

Converting a car from gasoline to alcohol (or x85) is a lot easier than converting to electric or hydrogen. If I can believe Brown's Alcohol Fuel Cookbook, my '57 Ford could be running on alcohol with a few mods to the carb and the timing.

I'd prefer a future where we can still enjoy the glorious sounds of big-block V8 engines burning something which is not gasoline and does not cost an arm and a leg. There's a huge competitive advantage for a country that can become independent of oil as an energy source.

Posted: 6/25/2009 11:57:21 PM
Westbam has some heavy electro influences.
Miami bass... to my ears most of it isn't very good, but there's a few artists like Maggotron that are worth listening to.

And going back further, there's some indisputable electro from Jean Michel Jarre on "Zoolook", Cabaret Voltaire on "Micro - Phonies", The Art Of Noise, and Herbie Hancock's "Rockit".

What operating system are you using?
Posted: 6/25/2009 11:12:44 PM
XP Pro on two machines, Windows 2000 on a couple more. The beast running NT 4.0 is rarely used now, and will be retired imminently, although many parts will live on. I only chose XP 2 years ago when I ran into an app that wouldn't run on 2K.

And, there's the vintage Toshiba portable that boots to DOS if the hard drive is feeling like it. And the Apple ][+ clone that may still boot to Apple DOS, or possibly even CP/M if the Z80 card were installed.

I don't know where the dunes are in Oregon, but if you can rent ATVs there, that could be a pleasant change from pavement.

It's easy to find a cheap region-free DVD player. Or if you rip a DVD to your computer with AnyDVD or DVDFab, the region encoding is removed.

A Japanese version may be available as a torrent, if that is a legal option where you are located.

Dayglo Abortions (originally from Victoria, B.C. Canada), and Subhumans (from Vancouver). Not to be confused with the UK Subhumanz with a Z. Both bands have been accused of being metal at times, but the Subhumans played at "Hardcore '81", along with DOA, 7 Seconds, Black Flag, Insex, and a bunch of others I can't remember at the moment. But I've got photos and live tapes from those excellent nights at The Laundromat. The Subhumans have reformed and recorded some new stuff.

There's a site called something like punktorrents.com that has a lot of old, out-of-print music and videos.

What is the best running shoes for you?
Posted: 6/16/2009 1:26:48 AM
Good ones, which probably means paying over $100. It was a revelation when I finally got a proper pair.

Fit is important... once I got a pair that ~seemed~ comfortable, but when I actually ran in them, I ended up with black big toenails on both feet. It took a couple of years for the toenails to grow back to looking normal. Fitting tight, but comfortable is the trick. I've got Nike trail runners that are a snug fit, but my toes don't get squished.

Sometimes. I figure that rewarding them will make them more obnoxious, which may help motivate authorities to do something about homelessness , the poor and street drug addicts.

And sometimes it's rewarding... I gave a buck or two to this hippie looking guy outside a 7-11, and he was so happy to be able to buy a hot dog and pile on all the fixings.

making money online ( not a advertisement by the way )
Posted: 6/3/2009 6:27:16 PM
I suspect that visiting a trade show in Taiwan, and making connections with a few legitimate wholesalers of neat gadgets could pay off. Sell on eBay, wholesale it to local retailers, or even through your own storefront. Maybe license a brand and slap stickers on stuff, the way Wal-Mart sells cheapie car jacks with a Mack Truck logo. OK, that's not completely online.

For a pure online business, anything that exploits compulsive behaviours like sex or gambling has profit potential.

Odor Neutral People
Posted: 6/3/2009 4:34:31 PM
It's been claimed that the French invented scent to cover up the body odors caused by lack of bathing.

I would modestly suggest that people who wear too much scent should be harpooned, dragged out to an open field, and pressure washed clean. That probably isn't going to happen, not unless my plot for world domination succeeds, and I don't get sidetracked by other pressing issues, like declaring process cheese unfit for human consumption.

Basically, wearing too much scent is inconsiderate, like driving through the 'burbs at 3 AM playing booty bass at full volume. Maybe there will be scent detectors mounted at the entrances to buildings to warn people inside with scent or chemical sensitivity issues that a smelly person is approaching.

I don't think I'm overreacting... I was at the recycling yard, and I had to hold my breath because some woman was wearing so much scent it overpowered the normal smells of garbage. If you live or work with these people, let them know. Perhaps there's some cartoons you could cut out and staple to their foreheads or other subtle ways to drop a hint. Like wearing a gas mask when you're around them.

Any PVR users out there? what's your setup?
Posted: 5/24/2009 2:24:33 AM
I've had a living room PC for almost 10 years now... first was a Pentium 133 with a DVD-ROM and MPEG2 accelerator card, and a Voodoo Rush video card with TV-out. The current thing runs XP; Athlon 64 X2 3800+, Geforce 8500 video card, Audigy 2 ZS, 80 gig IDE + 500 gig SATA, and LG GGC-H20L DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo drive. Sparkle Power power supply, aluminum rack case salvaged from a dead server. Lite-on wireless keyboard with built in thumb mouse, and an ATI Remote Wonder. TV is a 720p Sony CRT. Twinhan DVB card, Hauppauge PVR-250 and a Pinnacle AV/DV capture card are sometimes used for capturing, but mostly I watch torrented shows in 720p. The processor is plenty fast enough for Blu-ray and HD-DVD playback, thanks to the video card. I'd like to add an ATSC tuner, but there's no reception where I live.

When I had satellite TV, I tried the WinTV PVR-250 with BeyondTV; it was a nice combo, although I didn't have an IR blaster to automate channel changing. Still, the onscreen schedule was great for time-shifting. Worth checking out if you have cable.

I'm really tempted to get the Western Digital Media Player, since it plays just about any media (including 1080p Blu-ray rips) from USB storage devices. And it costs under $150, and does not contain 3 or more cooling fans. (And it's based on Linux, so it's upgradeable and hackable.) And it runs on 12V, so you could watch scary movies in the minivan when you're out camping. About my only beefs are that it doesn't have SVideo out (just RCA), and AFAIK the HDMI doesn't support multichannel lossless audio.

Micro-Holographic disk the answer to computer storage issues ?
Posted: 4/29/2009 1:48:54 AM
They'll be useful for backing up hard drives full of music and movies. And sharing said media with friends and family, which won't make Hollywood and the RIAA particularly happy. They could also be suitable media for the next generation high definition movies which will require something like 16 times the storage of Blu-ray, or for HiDef camcorders if writers can be made small enough and reliable enough.

I guess so. I planted a raspberry bush today. The grass I mowed a week ago needs another cut already.

As for hummingbirds, there's a red flowering currant (something like that) and the little critters are all over it.

The bird feeders are still up, but I stuffed the last of the beef fat into the "suet log" (18" piece of branch with holes drilled in it) a couple days ago. The "log" attracts chickadees, downy woodpeckers, flickers, sapsuckers, and the occasional nuthatch.

WTF is this, No Dirt Track Racing Threads???
Posted: 4/25/2009 1:52:45 AM
I've haven't been to see sprint cars get sideways on dirt for nearly 4 years. The closest track (Skagit Speedway) is one ferry ride and a border crossing away... kinda hard to justify spending that much for an evening's entertainment. There was a dirt track on Vancouver Island near Nanaimo, but issues with ambiguous zoning and NIMBY neighbours got it shut down. There's still about 3 paved oval tracks on the island.

MiniDV camcorders use replaceable tapes, so you won't run out of storage. It's also about the best format for editing. The mini DVDs are store video in a lower quality, compressed, format which isn't good for frame by frame editing. Around $100 will get you a used MiniDV camcorder... $200 or so a new one. You won't get a major increase in picture quality without stepping up to an HDTV camcorder. Those are under $1000 now, maybe as low as $600 with the right sale. Some of 'em use the same MiniDV tapes, which, again, is supposed to be the best consumer format for editing from. Unless you're prepared to spend a bunch more to get into an HDTV camcorder, I think you should go with a cheap basic MiniDV one like whatever the current entry-level Canon is. Unless the tanking economy means there's really good deals on used high-definition camcorders...

As for music... that's a matter of personal taste. I might include Slayer, Tom Petty, El Rayo X, deep house mixes, booty house, Miami bass and southern hip-hop, and country songs about guitars cadillacs and hillbilly music.

I can say that the KLF's "Chill Out" album is freaking perfect to listen to at night under the stars outside. However, you're probably not going to do that around Thanksgiving. So, go with the Natural Born Killers soundtrack album if you're going to be staying in cheap motels with knotty pine walls.

Anyone into cars(someone with tools)

I was going to make the modest suggestion to install keyless entry. I don't know what a shop would charge, but to do it yourself could be well under $100. ($20 to $50 for a used or discount alarm system. $5 to $25 for a lock actuator. $10 to $25 for a couple of relays.) The convenience is priceless.

The radio is an interesting challenge. I'll go with the proverbial "loose wire". Maybe a connection is loose and corroded, and sometimes the turn-on surge breaks through and sometimes it doesn't. Unplugging and replugging all connections, including the radio fuse, or wiggling 'em all and listening for pops or noise would be the first thing to try. If you can get at the connector where the power enters the head unit and jam wires in so they make contact, it would be instructive to run a couple of wires out to a voltmeter or 12V lamp and see if you get steady power there all the time.

A wrecking yard might let you try a replacement factory head unit to see if the fault is within the radio itself.

No. But, all dogs should be licensed, and all dog licenses should require proof of liability insurance. Allow the insurance companies to set the rates according to breed. Fine owners of unlicensed dogs and require them to purchase retroactive insurance coverage as well.

Or, just make dog owners 100% personally responsible for whatever their pets do, no excuses. Your dog bites the mailman? You're charged with assault causing bodily harm.

New High Speed Ferry in BC
Posted: 4/24/2009 1:33:40 AM
I'm skeptical. I used to ride the HarbourLynx between Nanaimo and Vancouver (only because my employer bought the tickets). It was busy in the summer with tourists and around weekends and holidays (college students), but midweek in the winter it was just a small group of regular commuters. When an engine blew, they couldn't raise the million or so it would take to repair, which suggests it was nowhere near profitable. Some regulars resorted to taking the BC Ferry across, others balked at spending a couple more hours per day commuting, and took the seaplane.

Tourist and government traffic between Vancouver and Victoria may be high enough to make the run practical. I'd be amazed if they can afford to run as many sailings in February as in July, though.

Some torrents use trackers that require you to register. If it's an unfamiliar tracker, browse to the web site and see if you can register there, and what the requirements are.

It also helps to use a good client program... utorrent worked much better for me than bittorrent. And, if you have adsl, you may have to limit u/l speed during downloading or d/l speed will suffer badly.

To Go Back To School... Or Not?
Posted: 3/4/2009 12:02:41 AM
Consider a 2 year diploma program rather than a degree - check with the college and there's probably some skill where graduates are getting hired right away. Medical imaging is one that is in demand locally, and that's just a 2 year program. Anything in the health care field has to be a good idea. Civil engineering techs seem to be in steady demand by local governments, if you want a job outside the big city.

Skilled trades are another option, if you can land an apprenticeship. That's where connections will help a lot.

plumber help please!

I wonder if the pump is sucking air? Like, a crack in the pipe between the pump and the well caused by freezing. That could account for low pressure. Or, the well could be low: around here the water table varies by more than 20 feet over the course of a year.

What's the fastest way to lose fat?

As others have suggested, the easiest is to just get more physical activity into your daily routine. Like, ride a bicycle to work or school. Or, get off the bus a few stops too soon and walk briskly (20 minutes or more). For a while I had a great commute: ride my bike 35 minutes to the ferry, lock it up, take the ferry to the Big City, then walk across town about 30 minutes. The real help was the return journey, since I was frequently late leaving and had to jog for the ferry.

Another time, changing my commute from driving to riding resulted in me dropping about 30 pounds without any effort. Well, apart from motivating myself to get on a bicycle on a dark wet winter morning... but investing in Goretex rain tights and waterproof shoe covers made bad weather more tolerable.

There's various floating resorts and fishing lodges. They tend to be out in the middle of nowhere, but that would be a good thing if you're into sea kayaking on your days off. Not so good if you crave nightlife.

Craigslist, kijiji, usedvictoria.com may have some job listings, although it could be more effective to contact the resorts directly.

Even implementing WEP can be a challenge if the router and wifi card/device are different brands. The names and formats for the various settings and fields aren't consistent.

It still works after all these years.

I still have my first Apple ][+ clone, but haven't dared plug it in for a while. I built that around 1983 with a motherboard from College Street in Toronto, SA400 disc drive from a surplus dealer in the states (which had to be modified), keyboard from a local surplus outlet, a power supply built with parts from Radio Shack and Active, in a plywood case. Monitor was a 12" B&W TV my dad gave me that I repaired and added an RCA input to. For a long time there was no backspace key which made for good typing discipline when typing in games from magazines. Eventually I figured out that Ctrl-h was the same as backspace.

My first programmable calculator, a Commodore bought in 1978, still works. 73 keystrokes of programming. People who've grown up with spreadsheets don't know the fun they missed.

New digital tv

Yep, you'll just have to subscribe to a digital satellite service and carry a dish and receiver around with you. And spend half an hour fiddling with the dish and a compass to point it at the right bird. Probably. Unless the digital broadcasts increase power and improve coverage once the analog broadcasts cease, which I'm guessing they'll feel highly motivated to do once angry viewers start calling or (in the case of PBS affiliates) canceling their donations.
