In an infinite universe...
Posted:

Loverofwisdom is right about infinite chances for a thing to happen not insuring it will happen. It'd be correct to say that the existence of an infinite number of realms creates a situation where the probability of anything that's possible to happen actually happening "approaches" 100%. It'd still be possible (though only infinitesimally likely) that an infinite amount of realms could exist and that in none of them does a pig ever evolve to ability to fly. It could also be that in every single one of them that eventually happens.

Question: Why was Hitler so obsessed with the occult? Why did he send scientists to search for Aryan bloodlines as far as Tibet? Was the myth that the Nazi's had the Spear of Longinvus, or the Spear of Destiny, true?
You're making an appeal to authority using Hitler? The guy was a lunatic, and only got more crazy as time passed.
Why was one of the first thing U.S. troops did when they went to Iraq was to loot the museums?
That was mostly the Iraqis themselves. They did that because they were poor and their future was (and still is) uncertain. Our government screwed the operation up, but that's a different subject.

"Believe nothing. No matter where you read it, or who said it, even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense."
~ Buddha
You know, this sounds a lot like George Bush's philosophy, too... This is the philosophy of someone that isolates themself from opposing information on purpose, assuring the persistence of their own ignorance.
The bottom line about this Nineveh "Constant" is that these posts show a fundamental misunderstanding of what numbers actually are and what can be done with them. If you throw about numbers, multiplying, adding, subtracting, rounding, substituting, you can make them fit ANY philosophy. Just ask the creationists. This is the same thing.

mozilla firefox browser updates for version 3.0
Posted:
8/30/2008 12:08:08 AM
You definitely shouldn't have to get those toolbars in order to get Firefox 3. I have FF3 on two different machines (one Vista, one XP) and do not have yahoo or icq toolbars on either.
Maybe you mean you already had those toolbars, then updated from FF2 to FF3 and now it's telling you version 3 toolbars are ready to be installed? Or maybe you were on a Yahoo page and it prompted you to get FF3 with the Yahoo toolbar, something like that? Possibly a combination of the two... you originally got FF from a link at Yahoo and it came with the toolbars?
But anyway, if you're wanting FF3 and don't want those toolbars, you can do that. Just go to www.mozilla.com. If you have the toolbars already and want to get rid of them, you can do so by clicking "Tools" at the top of the browser, then select "Add-ons". From there you can either disable them or uninstall completely them.

Have forums lost their charm?
Posted:

I help moderate another forum (not a dating site) and I see this a lot. It's weird. People who would normally be understated/polite will just go nuts and take a fight-until-death position on something pretty trivial when they're in a forum. I think it's the anonymity (psuedo though it may be...) that does it. People may feel free from having to restrain themselves as they normally would because they see no consequences to just letting it all hang out.

How Far Will Bisping Go (UFC)?
Posted:

Bisping is an entertaining guy and I usually am rooting for him in his fights, but I think Leben would KO him. Bisping is not on the same level with Silva and the top 5 in the division, imo. Leben is good at getting inside, causing some chaos, and then landing that one bomb he needs to win the fight, which is exactly what I think would happen in this case, sad to say. I highly doubt we'll ever be hearing "...and the new UFC middleweight champion ooooof the woooooorrrrllllld... Michael "The Count" Biiiiissspiiiinnnngggg!!!!"

FLEETER is right. You want to finish the treatment so that you don't get into a situation where you've made yourself feel better but there is a small amount of lingering infection you can't detect. These surviving organisms will be more resistant to the treatment, so if it comes back on you, it'll likely be harder to treat, and you may then spread a more resistant strain to others.

Yeah, Hughes and Guillard make that least for me, too, for reasons already stated. Ken Shamrock, too. He's just such a bitter self-absorbed caveman. Then there's Baroni, a bigoted 'roiding egomaniac. And what about Gilbert Yvel? The guy is constantly claiming he's not a dirty fighter and then what does he do? KO's a ref.
Oh, and speaking of mustaches and now refs, the Mazzstache has to be my favorite. Steve Mazzagatti and that creepy grin for the win!

Cung Le vs Frank Shamrock
Posted:
4/2/2008 10:09:29 AM
Yeah, I agree with everyone that Shamrock just refused to do what he does best. While he's a very good striker, Le is outstanding, though maybe lacking a bit in the power department (then again, it appears he broke Frank's arm with a kick, ouch). EliteXC needs to sign Lindland. He is the perfect test for Le. Supposedly Cung is a good wrestler, but there's no way he's in the same league as Lindland. I would pick Lindland, possibly by guillotine choke.

Speaking of The Pixies, "Trompe Le Monde" (1991) is a great one. At first I didn't like the change in their sound that came with "Bossanova", but after listening more objectively to it and "Trompe Le Monde" they really grabbed me. "Trompe Le Monde" and "Doolittle" are my two favorites from them.

Hmm, my original take was that it was an April Fool's joke (thus "4:01"), but like you say, it looks like it may have been posted to wired.com before then (though they could, of course, make it look that way as part of the joke or could just have done it early). If this is really happening, it says a lot of bad things about a lot of people and displays how mob thinking can quickly get out of hand.

GET RID of the FLUE or COLD ; ---OVER NIGHT;
Posted:
3/28/2008 8:20:57 PM
Just to clarify, I know that not all cures were arrived at using the scientific method. But it still stands that if you want to find out if what you believe is working is really the thing at play, the best way to do that is using the scientific method. The problem with ignoring that and saying "don't dismiss home remedy 1 or home remedy 2 until you've tried it" is that there are thousands (well, probably millions) of them out there. So, out of all the choices, which treatment should you go with? The one with the best evidence. That treatment right now is to get rest in a clean comfortable environment and eat and drink as well as you can.
To the thread starter: I'm not trying to get you to stop doing this. And anyone else who gets a cold, if you want to try it, by all means, I'm fine with that. However, if you get a high fever, as others have said, doing things that will boost your already high body temperature seems like a bad idea. If your temperature goes too high, things can get really bad for you: over 105 and you have increased risk of bacterial infection, over 108 and the fever will do damage itself.

My vote, if I really had to choose between all the greats, would be Breakfast With Girls by Self, though Subliminal Plastic Motives might appeal to a wider range of people. Both are a lot of fun. SPM is pretty diverse but still more of a rock album, where BWG is pretty much impossible to categorize and its humor can be very tricky and is often not understood. Self's songs often seem to be both parodies of and tributes to artists and/or genres while still being enjoyable on their own.

In general, whether male or female and regardless of age, it doesn't mean anything except that in that moment they couldn't come up with anything else to do. But yeah, usually I too think that they just wouldn't be likely to be the type of person I'd be interested in.

Is the speed of thought finite?
Posted:
3/23/2008 1:04:18 AM
I agree with silivros about needing this to be properly defined. In fact, the question is not really fully formed without defining what is meant by the "speed of thought". Depending on your definition the answer can be yes or it can be no.
If we're talking about the whole process, wherein, say, a set of data is examined and is then used to formulate a belief or proposal, then it seems reasonable to measure the speed of thought as D /T = R (amount of data processed divided by the time it takes to process it equals the rate of thought).
If you confine trying to decide whether or not the speed of thought is finite by trying to determine whether or not a thought comes into existence in one instant where it had been absent in the previous instant then you're essentially saying "examine the instant when the thought occurs and nothing else", which basically removes the passage of time and thus makes speed impossible to measure. A race car reaches the finish line in an instant, looking at it this way. But looking at the bigger picture, the car traveled some distance over some time to get there and thus had speed.
The same goes for "instant" availability of information to the brain. Are you looking at the process of the person pondering a subject from the beginning, directing their brain to retrieve information or are you just looking at the instant when the information enters the consciousness? A tennis ball across the room could be said to be instantly available to your hand if you ignore the time it takes to walk over to it and reach for it.

I suppose I should've said "health advice" rather than "medical advice". And you're right at least that doctors don't know everything. Nobody does. They still know far more about this sort of thing than the average person, though.
And yes, scientists do discover new ways of doing things, but they go about it using the scientific method, which was not employed here.
It's good to be open to new ideas when they're well-supported, but it's not good to be open to new ideas just because they're new. I know you have personal evidence that this seems to work, for you. I think our disagreement basically comes down to me believing it'd have been better for you to say "Here's something that has seemed to get rid of what I think have been colds and the flu, though I was never diagnosed." Qualification of claims is important, in my opinion.

I think there's a bit of disconnect here as to how speed and the occurrence of an event are related. Yes, a thought may "come to mind" instantaneously, but there were processes leading up to that, and the thought was only complete and recognizable when those underlying processes finished and "spit out" their results. It's kind of like turning on a light. The light will hit your eyes instantaneously, but it took a small amount of time for the light, traveling at about 186,000 miles per second to get there.

For the record, I do think your intentions in making this thread and giving this advice were good ones. But you gave medical advice that I don't think holds water, so I expressed my opinion. Still, as I said, people are free to try it for themselves and I doubt it'll do them harm. They may even get a beneficial placebo effect.

The flu vaccination has never been an absolute preventative from getting the flu. The flu comes in a lot of varieties, caused by a lot of different viral strains. What they do is make a projection of the three (I believe it's three) strains most likely to be a problem during the flu season. They then make a vaccine that gives recipients a great degree protection from those particular strains and some residual protection against other strains. Can you still then get the flu? Absolutely, but it is less likely. Additionally, your immune system doesn't fully react to the vaccine for about two weeks, so it takes that long to really get the vaccine's benefits.

What The Bleep Do We Know had a pretty effective depiction of the double slit experiment demonstrating the dual nature (particle & wave) of small things. But that's actually kind of unfortunate because that has really circulated well and introduced people to the film itself which is riddled with psuedoscience.

I believe you did what you say you did and that you got better, but you're one person on the internet and there's no way of knowing (we'll come back to this word) what you had or what made you feel better.
In order to "know" what you had, real verification is needed. As we have seen, the presumed virus was never identified. On top of that, this was not an experiment in controlled conditions and involved an unknown but small sample (you and some people you know). And honestly, the vast majority of the time when I get a cold, it goes away without me doing anything special very quickly, so would you be okay with me telling everyone "don't worry, go on about your business, it'll be gone tomorrow"? Maybe your body is just fighting off these illnesses the way it would normally.
And we have every bit as much of a right to state our view of things as you do. This is a public forum, even in your thread.
But yes, people can try it for themselves. It doesn't sound harmful, so long as they don't neglect taking in fluids and good food while they try this.

I've got to agree with Motley. The claim that doing these things the OP suggests will get rid of the flu overnight just can't be reasonably considered realistic. For one, he admits not knowing what he had. Was the virus actually identified? No. Therefor the claim is not valid.
And as was eluded to earlier, a lot of people think they have the flu when they really just have a cold or some other ailment that is less severe. Getting actual influenza is a very different experience. When you the the real flu you understand why so many people die from it. You will feel bad for longer than a day and there will often be a period of time lasting days where you feel like your body is not making progress. On the upside, after that, colds will no longer seem like any kind of a big deal by comparison. The term "the flu" is thrown around so much that people don't really seem to consider it a "serious disease" anymore, but it is.
As suggested earlier, make sure you keep yourself well hydrated and contrary to what some people will advise, you never want to try and starve it out. It doesn't eat your food, it "eats" you, basically. Eat as well as you can so that your body has the resources to put up a fight. The flu kills tens of thousands of people in the U.S. yearly (see link below). The rate skyrockets when you get into underdeveloped countries due (to a great degree) to malnutrition.

Wow, I'm glad this thread was made. This is the program I'm on right now, too. I've actually never been on an actual workout regimen before, but I was already in decent condition (cardio, not strength). I can keep up with the cardio, kempo and leg stuff, but the yoga and some of the arm exercises (pull ups especially) show me I need a lot of work. I'm on week 4 now and can definitely tell a difference, though. I definitely recommend it.
If you're an absolute beginner like me, it will be intimidating. I suggest not worrying at all during the first week. Don't try to keep up with them and don't worry about writing down what you did. Just learn the techniques. You'll probably have to replay things a few times to see how to do them right. Then consider the second week the real beginning and put in more effort and keep track of what you do from then on.
Oh, and I agree about the KempoX workout. It's not like you'll learn how to really strike with that. I did a little Muay Thai and some of the stuff on this dvd made me laugh, especially the punching from horse stance where they're not putting any hip movement into it. Just go nuts with it and consider it another cardio workout.

He's one of the few to actually own up to it and I believe him when he says he just did it that one time leading up to the McGee fight. His lack of aggressiveness has more to do with getting clocked a couple of times by Arlovski and Miletich coaching him to be patient than anything else, I think.
Oh, and btw, just hours after my last post, Baroni lost again, haha.

I'm having a similar problem as well. I literally cannot respond to email for days here sometimes, even if I have all my text in my clipboard and click reply, paste, and submit as fast as I can (literally just seconds). I know there are limited resources here due to it being a free site (which we all appreaciate), so I'm not writing this to complain. Maybe instead of having members communicate by email, they could be redirected to the forums to either threads that only they and maybe POF staff have access to, or pm's, when they click the contact user link. I know you don't have private messaging here right now, and I don't know what software you use for the boards, but many forum software packages have this functionality. Just fyi, I have internet service from AT&T (formerly Bell South service, which is dynamic IP), so I imagine this must be affecting a lot of people.

The reality of 'roid-rage' may amount to: who is more animalistic, and not so much: who is the better athlete? It doesn't matter how trained in martial arts or boxing or wrestling you are if a wild, ear biting bear is coming at you.
If I understand you correctly, I disagree to an extent. It will give people a strength advantage, but that aggressiveness can work against them. Look at how many fights guys like Randleman (Roidleman!) and Baroni lose because they don't fight smart.

When men say no head games what do they mean?

Chef, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I know this, but it was Foreigner. I remember "rawkin' out" to that when I was nine.
P.S.
I take it your wife doesn't read the forums. That could be a bad day for you.

Excellent posts by Creativguy, AccidentalTourist and SlyKnight.
Also, I think this means something different to different people and, in fact, I get the feeling that a lot of people who put that in their profile don't know what they themselves mean by it. They've just heard it said over and over and figure it's a nice general warning to "not mess with me". And I also think it's true that many people who play games (whether testing you or claiming they want one thing and really looking for another) don't entirely know they're doing it. Of course, some people are just outright deceitful, too.
And then there are a ton of people who just don't know what they want so they send mixed signals and go back and forth between "going for it" and "backing out" or start dating someone and realize, "Oh, this isn't what I want", which is then interpreted as "playing games". And realistically, I'd bet that the vast majority of us have accidentally done this to people before figuring out what it is that we want.
The bottom line, though, is that putting that in your profile has almost zero chance of avoiding this kind of thing, and when you see it in someone else's it can mean a lot of different things, or almost nothing. I wouldn't entirely rule out contacting someone with "no games" in their profile either, but I haven't done so yet, and it seems to usually be accompanied by other negative signs in the profile that make me think they just aren't ready to date.
NOTE: Haha, I just notice that someone who contacted me that has this in their profile, but they seem very nice and I will reply. See? It's not an absolute.

Drink Lots of Water??

I don't know much about it where you live, but here in the States, tap water is usually better than bottled water due to much more frequent testing and stricter regulation. Actually, here about 25% of bottled water is in fact tap water put into a bottle. I kind of comes back to the point about companies not really looking out for the public, even when that's what their marketing campaign claims. That's not to say bottled water is "unsafe", in general. Usually it's fine.

But that's assuming we're the cause of that mercury content, which is not clear.

And I'm not someone who automatically takes an anti-environmentalist/pro-big business/throw all caution to the wind in order to make a dollar stance like we often see when someone is on this side of the debate. I believe, for instance, that we're responsible for most (if not all) of the recent global warming trend and would like to see big changes that corporations would not like very much in order to address the problem.
I agree with you that corporations should not be left to police themselves on this. It's not in the nature of a corporation to look out for the general well being of society.

Dark Matter and Mathematics ..

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe it was a disparity between the amount of observable matter and observations of its behavior that led to the theory of dark matter. In other words, the math didn't work without it.

Sure, there are things we don't know, but if we shut down whole fields of endeavor because we don't know everything about them, we will never make any progress anywhere. As I say, things WILL go wrong (that doesn't mean "spectacularly wrong"). But things ARE going wrong naturally, too. There are people dying by the millions of disease and malnourishment.
In all things we should strive to solve more problems than we cause. And remember, I'm not saying "researches should try everything they can think of". There has to be serious risk assessment before beginning. And, btw, I'm for much tighter governance and oversight by regulatory commissions on not only this research but on the preparation of consumables in general. Right now there is a serious problem with a lack of resources in this area.

Yeah, MissJamille covered the water issue well.
Concerning genetically modifying food, we should be careful but we should not abandon it either. There are a lot of current benefits and many more potential benefits, everything from having foods that produce more vitamins or that even produce vaccines to increasing the amount of good fats in foods and decreasing the saturated fats to increasing resistance to parasites resulting in less use of pesticides. There will be cases where it goes bad. But we'll have to live with that. Bad things will happen in nature, too. What we want is for the benefits to outweigh the drawbacks. That means both being careful to not recklessly put something out there that hasn't been tested thoroughly and not abandoning research and production of GM foods that could help a lot of people due to irrational fears.
Check out the link below for some great information on the subject.

Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter?

I agree with you on most points there, Chem, save for Liddell. He's definitely very good and has excellent take down defense, but he's not the supreme striker that he's built up to be. He's mostly patience and a right hand. Polished strikers won't make the mistakes and overcommitments he's relied on to get the KO in the past. He's been beaten on the feet twice by Jackson and once by Jardine. Going back further, I'd have called his "fight" with Bustamante a draw. I'd put even odds on a fight with Forrest Griffin now. Machida would beat him, imo, and Anderson Silva might as well if he were to move up a division. And it's really too bad Mirko didn't stay with the UFC and drop to the light heavyweight division. He'd have shown Chuck up badly. Speaking of heavyweights, Liddell's been calling out Fedor. He'd better hope he doesn't get his wish. Fedor is an underrated boxer. He'd beat him wherever he needed to.
You're totally right about the lighter divisions being where most of the talent is.

Mental health, i don't know what to do...

Depending on your mindset, the statistics on this stuff may help you to not worry about it so much. Below is a link to the likelihood of dying due to various things. The first two most likely to get any of us are, far and away, heart disease and cancer. And we can influence the odds somewhat on those, which is kind of empowering. Eat healthy and exercise and you significantly push back these problems. And just fyi, the chances of dying from any natural forces is 1-in-3,357. That is lumping them ALL into one statistic, so the odds of dying of any particular natural disaster is much much lower than that. Tornado? 1-in-60,000. Also note that the odds of dying due to a nuclear a nuclear strike are so low it doesn't even make it into the list. What about the odds of being killed by an asteroid? 1-in-500,000. There have only been two nuclear bombs used against people.
In the end, everything comes down to playing the odds. The great thing about it is that we have a degree of control over the things that are the most likely to be a problem.

Is being creative really a good thing ?!
Posted:

Creativity itself is a good thing, but you have to have more than just creativity. I have two opposing views on how best to reveal creativity to others.
First, I don't think you should be someone you're not, or even advertise yourself in your profile to be someone you're not (not accusing you of that, btw, just stating the "rule") in order to attract someone. If you do, you'll most likely attract someone who won't appreciate what you are and someone you will mostly likely wind up bored and/or frustrated with. So, the first option is to go out and be completely yourself, hoping to attract that person who's really right for you.
On the other hand, I sometimes think that it might be possible to scare off that possible someone special if you go full bore right off with the creativity because they don't have any history with you and may not know how to take it. I think sometimes there is a sort of "mental context" that needs to be developed first, so they can tell the difference between you ACTING crazy and someone who IS crazy. You can first show them you can be logical and responsible and then slowly release the "weirdness" as you get to know them. I tend to go this route usually, coming off more reserved in the beginning than I wind up later on. Then again, I'm 37 and single.... hmmm....
Good luck!
