Great post, Husker! That's a damn scary scenario isn't it. Good thing our gov't moves at the speed of molasses going uphill, or we'd be screwed already!

Ok guys & gals, wanna hear somethin' cool? I was taught to shoot AT SCHOOL!
That's right, in school! I was in the "Military Science" class ( California Cadet Corps).
Mom 'bout had a shitfit,(anti-gun) but dad signed the permission slip without anything more than "be careful". He liked to shoot and used to hunt when he was a kid, but liked seein' mom naked more than guns so he kinda' gave 'em up.
Can you imagine the apoplexy this would cause nowadays?....lol I think the Cadet Corps is still around, but I doubt they still have rifle matches. Too bad too, it was a lot of fun . It was highly supervised by the "Commandant" (instructor) and the cadets that were actually on the rifle team. Any infraction on the range was cause for the cadet coach to take control of the firearm (by commandant's order) and remove the cadet from the range. The cadet would not be allowed to attempt qualifications until the next year, and then only if the commandant felt they were mature/safe enough. Also, the cadet coaches were allowed to remove anyone they felt was unsafe. I had one cadet that worried me enough to remove, after I got the muzzle out of my face and pointed back down range. The poor girl was (almost) as scared as I was. (She had been removed the previous year and the commandant had reservations about her but I volunteered to coach her and he trusted my judgement...that sure taught me about volunteering....) And no I wasn't trying to get in her pants, she would have been the only one banned from trying to qualify and I didn't want her hassled about it...the next year though....yeah ,some people just shouldn't handle firearms.

Religion and dating

Hi Annie, I agree that to dismiss someones religion as a "fairy tale" is not being accepting of it. When I was younger I was a militant atheist, and would heckle and deride "believers" to no end. The older I get, I find I'm more accepting of the idea of a "creator", but I still see the bible as a book of stories and parables. I mean, honestly, the ten commandments is pretty much a no-brainer, right?
I agree that a non religious person is better off with a like minded person. Why start off with a major disagreement, with no hope of a peaceful resolution?
Like couples don't have enough to argue about.....sheesh.

311 and the beach, and relegalizing drinking on the beach.
Posted:

Yeah, I think drinking on the beach should be legal as long as you(or whoever) don't : 1. Get shitfaced and assault or harrass any innocent bystanders (or swear profusely in front of little kids). 2. Decide that it's the perfect time to get naked with the 'ol lady in front of everybody. And.....you are willing to actually use the trash can(s) provided and clean up your own damn mess!
My guess is too many drunks...er..people ignored the above concerns, so alchohol was outlawed. Most familys want to let their kids run and play on the beach, but not with a bunch of drunken idiots around starting fights and throwing trash around. Another case of the few ruining things for the many........such is life!

I have to say, for the most part, I agree with "The Limey", however I am a moderate/conservative Democrat and resent being lumped in with the whackos of the far left. I don't give a rats ass what gays or lesbians do in their own homes, but a gay scoutmaster?....sorry, I can't see taking a chance on that. And, no I'm not saying gays are pedophiles, but I wouldn't want a male PE coach in the girls locker room either!(even if he was gay!) I am also the most un-religious person you're likely to meet, but I couldn't care less about the "ten commandments"being posted in schools. If schools want to teach creationism alongside evolution, it may be a waste of time, but so what, it's not gonna warp anybodys mind. As far as environmentalists go, don't let me get started. Too late! I'm all for not destroying our planet, but screw the smelt ,turn the damn pumps on! The farmers need the water, the farm workers need the work, and the rest of us need the produce! (I also don't care if the farm is a corporation, the worker is illegal or any of that crap,it's been that way for years and it's not gonna change overnight!)

I think he likes you, truly cares about your feelings, and after he's spent a few months banging anything with pulse, you can have what's left over.....lol Seriously though, I do think he might be interested in you, but he's warning you that he's not ready to settle down with you or anyone else yet. If you care for him ,stick around, but don't make yourself too available, or you'll be "one of the herd", and get used. Be the "special" one that he'd be lucky to get! If he sees you that way, you're set, If not move on.

Folkie does have a few good points, but IMHO, I think they are trumped by those of Husker and the like. I'm reminded of a bumper sticker I saw once,"I love my country, but I fear my government." A dis-armed populace is ripe pickings for a potential dictator. Hmmm, could this be why it hasn't been tried here?

telling the difference between flirting/joking

Only way to find out I can think of is ask her for a date. Make sure she understands that it's a "date", not just hanging out w/"a friend". I mean, don't make her feel like you're gonna rip her clothes off,(unless she wants 'ya to...lol) but that you're "interested". Her answer should tell 'ya all 'ya need to know....Good luck, hope she's into 'ya too...

Deli, O yeah I've been "judged" like that too. All you can really do is judge them for being so judgemental...lol. I get what you're saying,it's not that you feel"entitled" to anything, but it would've been nice if he'd have said up front "Sorry, but you're a smoker." Every message sent is an "investment" , of sorts, so yeah he kinda' wasted your time, especially if you stated in your profile that you smoked. Screw 'im, his loss, right! Hang in there, and good luck in your search!

I'd have to say a bit of all three. While I personally admire John McCain, I think he made a serious mistake picking Sarah Palin as a running mate. It(among other issues) cost him my vote. However, I think it's in extremely poor taste to hang her in effigy. She may be an extreme right-wing nut job....but that's her right. She's done nothing to deserve this kind of hatred and disrespect.

I would be very careful if I were you. You don't say if you're "in love" with her, if you are, it may make a difference. A lot depends on how her family sees your relationship. If they see you as a "chester", you could get locked up! Does her sister have custody/guardianship? If not, her opinion probably means squat... If she's living as an adult she might want to think about emancipation (if it's. allowed in your state). Good luck & be careful!!

Advice.......Do I tell him I love him, or let it go?
Posted:
9/15/2008 7:55:47 PM
I agree with Margo. For you, it's a form of closure....."no unfinished business"... It also reminds him of his options....He may get out west and decide it was a huge mistake...That he's left behind someone that could be his "one". I don't know how close you were, but if both of your feelings for each other were strong, he may get to missing you and decide to "be with " you and "visit" his family out there. (So sue me, I like the Hollywood endings....lol)
Besides, either way, telling is a "win/win" for you, 'cause I'm betting you'll hurt more if 'ya don't.

Dating a Religious Zealot is a challenge
Posted:
9/13/2008 9:20:37 PM
I don't know about dating one,'cause I once told the Jehovah's Witness people at my door"No, thanks I'm a satan worshipper". BIG mistake...They came back like three times a week (at least) until I finally told 'em I was kidding. They went away after I took a Watchtower and said I call if I was interested. lol
I used to class my self as an atheist, but as I got older, I realized that I did believe we were created by someone/something. I just don't believe he/she /it is a"god". In fact, I will freely admit I have no f'ing clue who or what put us here,or why for that matter.
I love to tweak the noses of "true believers",but I at least try to do it in fun, and not to hurt feelings. (I once told an AA group my "higher power" was Satan....that went over real well...lol. But, no, they're not promoting religion, really they're not....lol)
I mostly agree with jpublic's views on the bible though, it has been translated and "revised& updated for easier understanding" enough that the original meaning & context is probably way off from what we're getting today.
Something to ponder......Myself, I feel it is more likely that man created God to give his existence meaning, than it is for God to have created man for....WTF.....lol

Abortion Rights As Election Issue - The Truth
Posted:
9/11/2008 3:58:18 PM
The bottom line for me is; Decisions about abortion are between the pregnant woman, the potential father, and their god/"higher power". It is no one elses business... not mine, not yours...and especially not the governments.
This issue is just another "sound bite" for the politicians to use to get elected. If any of these people really ran for office to promote the public welfare, why would they be concerned with their "legacy". It's all about ego & power folks, don't be fooled!
Ever notice that no matter who's in office (any office), the crap stays pretty much the same? While the pols keep the people busy argueing about abortion, immigration, gun control, etc the corporations that really run the country keep rakin' in the profits. Case in point, virtually all the contract jobs in Iraq are run by Halliburton and its subsidiarys. Will the hosing ever stop? Don't hold your breath!

First Date Pet Peeves
Posted:

What's funny is somebody you're with ****ing about you tipping too much! Like you're flirting with the waitress.... lol Seriously though , I used to work for the IRS, and know about what they call "A- tips". Basically, they assume you're being tipped 15% of your total sales...and call it "taxable income". So the waiter/waitress is getting taxed on 15% of their sales unless they keep a "tip log" that proves they recieved less. So if you're being a cheapass, you're not only insulting them you're hitting them in the wallet too! Most places pay minimum or slightly above, and**** around with their hours, so the wait staff's main income is their tips. I once worked at a place where one waitress pissed off the manager, so he scheduled her four to six hours a week! She didn't do anything that was a " for cause" firing offense, so he'd have to pay unemployment if he got rid of her, so he just starved her out. So yeah ,these folks have it bad enough without some jackass being rude to 'em or stiffing 'em. Try tipping 20-25% , and see how they treat you next time you show up.Treat 'em right and they'll take care of 'ya. And if they do screw something up, talk to them about it POLITELY and discreetly and they'll most likely make it right somehow.

Red heads...
Posted:

One thing I've noticed about the reds I've known, is that they're way prettier than they think they are. I guess all that teasing they got as kids made 'em way more humble than they should have been...lol One gal I worked with stunned me literally speechless the first few times I saw her. She'd come up to ask me something, and I'd see that face, framed by that hair and all I could do was stammer something ... Then she'd walk away lookin' at me like I was nuts....lol I finally had to tell her," I'm really not a gibbering moron, it's just that you're the most beautiful woman I've ever met, and you're absolutely stunning." She laughed like I was crazy, but the next time she waited 'til I got my voice back.

Need some perspective on a situation
Posted:
8/5/2008 9:00:16 PM
Sounds to me like both of you were standin' around waiting for the other to make the first move. Ooops!
How badly do you want her? Can you realistically see the two of you as a couple?
I ask this because , yeah if she's not into you"that way", you could tank a friendship.
Don't feel bad, man, I've played the "does she or doesn't she" bit myself, only to watch her trot off happily with somebody else 'cause I****d around too long. Oh, yeah, I see your friends were as big of a help as mine were, too. lol
You need to find a way to sit her down and tell her how 'ya feel, and have felt that way since you met her, but she was married and you respected that, and now they're split but you wanted to wait and give her a little time to herself, didn't wanna be pushy, or ruin the friendship, etc,etc.....but you decided that you'd rather blow it by telling her how you feel than by staying silent and losing her. If she's into you at all and she sees you're sincere, you may still have a shot.
To hell with her long distance romeo, alls fair in love and war!!

This is going to sound really old fashioned and all but, if you've been "saving yourself"( for marriage, "true love" etc.) you might want to keep it up. You only surrender your virginity once, so if that means something to you, be sure that you won't regret it later.

How 'bout those Fresno State Bulldogs!!
Posted:

Shhh, Don't give the other teams any ideas...LOL I'm sure they felt "robbed" by the 'Dogs! One of the best things, in my opinion, is the praise from the opposing coaches. Every one of 'em admitted to being outplayed, no sniveling or excuses, and actually complimented them on their ability.
I agree, the other teams really need some help running a clean program. Even coach Hill's football team, has a few issues, although I think he's an excellent coach and has done a lot of good for his team, coach Batesole should be the model for the rest of 'em.
It's obvious he has the respect of his players, and it seem they truly like him as a person also.
It goes to show that if 'ya recruit quality people, ya get quality results!
I don't know how you feel about it Thicknnice, but if CSUF was regular business, Welty would have been gone AGES ago. I can understand how he might get boos and hisses from the crowd...

I am so jazzed about the "Diamond 'Dogs" winning the championship! When I was a kid I watched a lot of baseball, but as I got older, it kind of fell off my priorities list. These guys reminded me how much fun baseball could be to watch. I gotta be honest, I really didn't pay much attention 'til they went to Tempe, but after that I caught every game I could. They played some great ball, and played with a lot of heart. After all the scandals at CSUF, these guys showed that there is some "class act" athletes in Fresno.
So, what do y'all think? All I can say is GO 'DOGS!!!

Religion without law?
Posted:
6/25/2008 3:29:20 PM
Sock... You rock! Once again ,you get to the heart of the problem. I used to be a die hard atheist.....but have come to realize that we didn't just congeal out of vapors or dirt or whatever. I now believe we were created by someone or something. Is this creator "God"? I have no clue... Is this creator benevolent? Once again , no clue. Is the bible the true word of God? I seriously doubt it! The bible was written by a man (or several men,OK?) Even if it was dictated by "God", the mans/mens perspective had to have leaked in. The same with religion. Religion was created by man as an early attempt at explaining his existence. I think it's hilarious that the beliefs of the Greeks, the Norse and the Native Americans is dismissed as "myth", and christianity is revered as "religion".
Another thing to ponder; Why would an all powerful "God" trust one man "a/the prophet" to spread his word/law when he could appear to each of us and tell us personally? Methinks something is mighty suspicious about that!

Also....some guys are total idiots...(I was at your age, hell I still am!) if you see a guy friend you want, grab him up an throw a lip lock on 'im and see if he still wants to be "friends " He might be too dense to realize that this hot little sweetie (you!) is actually interested.

What To Do If You Run Into An Estranged Relative? (Update)

Ally, only you know how your brother is liable to act/react to you being there.
It's easy for others to tell you to "take the high road", cause they don't have to take the ass kickin' that comes with it. (I know some folks like your brother, they straight don't give a shit about nuthin',nowhere,nohow...)
I can honestly see where (if he's as violent as you say) the middle of his sons childs birth might be perfect to "put you in your place".
If there is any question about your safety, drop your mom and your aunt off at the hospital with the big baloons and a card to the new parents " One good deed , hour of babysitting, etc...To be redeemed at their convenience ",and have your nephew call 'ya when it's safe for you to visit. They'll love the card ...especially when they're stressin' and want to use it...lol
Here's hopin' they have a healthy, beautiful, little girl!!!
Maybe they'll name her after 'ya.... wouldn't that frost 'yer brothers ass....lol

How do I get him back?
Posted:
6/16/2008 9:35:40 PM
Sorry, but you can't get him back. It sounds to me like he thought long and hard about your future together and realized you didn't have one. Now, here's where I disagree with alot of the previous posters: I think he refuses any contact with you because he does love you. ( notice I didn't say "In love with you") I think he's realized the deck is stacked against you staying together and happy, and has cut you loose so you can find happiness elsewhere. Twenty years from now your memories of him will be much kinder than if he strung you along . Sure, he could come over and explain himself, screw 'ya silly and leave again, but would you really feel any better about it?
He just cut the losses for both of 'ya.

OK..tacky or am I a prude?

OP , you're right, they are being tacky, and more than a bit disrespectful . Politely telling them they crossed the line probably didn't work , did it? I freely admit I can be an ass at times, but even I think talking about prior sexual exploits and the attributes of those that "got away" ( ran away screaming, probably) is over the top. As soon as he went there 'ya shoulda' said "Wow you're right , my ex is hung like a mule, what am I doing here with you!"..... and leave! Not hella' subtle, but I bet he'd get the point.....LOL Hope 'ya have better times in the future.

All I know is..... Don't answer the door drunk and scream "I worship Satan" when Jehovah's Witnesses show up. It just gives them a mission. They came back every day for a week....

If I wasn't feeling threatened, I wouldn't worry about it or do anything ,except maybe observe and look for a pattern. Maybe you have an entity that's playing with you ,or trying to communicate.

Did He Do It?

Of course OJ did it... And in my opinion ,Robert Blake just saved her next victim/sucker the trouble.
Regardless, she also killed innocent men. She deserved what she got. Do you think that they would have given her the sentence she received had she not been a lesbian and had she been very attractive? I doubt it. I think a jury would be able to relate to her and sympathize somewhat with her plight.
does anyone remember Karla Faye Tucker? G.W. Bush snickered at her clemency petition. True ,the murder she committed was horrific, but most people at the time considered her a perfect case for clemency. Unfortunetly for her, Texas does not have "life without parole" , so if her sentence had been commuted to "life", she would eventually been eligible for parole. I'm guessing that's why Texas has so many executions, they don't have the "throw away the key" option

What lessons have you learned from PoF?

Yeah, I ran into that wall too. But I didn't do it on accident, that day I had the morals of an alley cat.(well, to be completely honest....)So I'm paying for it forever. Sorta' like cyber-clap I guess.
However, I think you can re -register with a different screen name. I just don't think its worth it (for me anyway) and it would feel dishonest to me.

If you're into old "warbird" aircraft, check out the Castle Air Museum in Atwater. (old Castle AFB)
I haven't been in years, and they've added some really cool old planes. Some of 'em are even supposed to haunted....

I must admit, I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but when I get on POF, one of the first things I check out is the Cali. forums. To me they are great entertainment, and sometimes I actually learn a thing or two!
As far as being "cliquey", (yeah, I know, botched spelling penalty..lol) It seems to me a lot of people here have actually met at one or more of the events, so the banter comes a little quicker and easier. I've never seen it as an attempt to exclude anyone.
There are a bunch here I'd love to meet ,(female & male) 'cause they seem like interesting and intelligent people. Maybe someday I will, if not at least I can "hang out" with 'em here. ( At least 'til they throw my silly ass out...lol)

In your profile you say you're a laid back person,so... kick back and see what happens.
If you like the guy, and it's mutual, things will come back around to where you were.
I wouldn't write him off, but I would keep other options open.
