Should I open up a can of worms or let sleeping dogs lie?

You should stop using cliches.

And you should stop drunk dialing people.

The relationship is probably over for her, but if your heart says "go 4 it" -- ouch, would you stop with the cliches already? -- then give her a call, but only if you're sober.

What does that weird behavior mean?
Posted: 8/12/2008 4:34:49 PM

the woman I am seeing is acting so weird

You can stop right there. Major red flag. Pay attention to it. A person who truly cares for you will not keep you in a state of confusion.

Face it. You've fallen in love with a fantasy of who this woman is. In reality, she is acting out a bunch of issues, and you are providing the stage. Most likely the longer you stay with her, the worse her behavior will get.

Look for a healthy relationship, that's my constructive idea.

Do women understand how trivial the Olympics are?
Posted: 8/12/2008 4:03:11 PM

Or have women become similarly socialized to be obsessed with the trivial distractions of mass-media society?

Men who look good in Speedos are rare. So rare that they can only be spotted once every four years, and that's at the Olympic swimming and diving competitions. Not trivial, if you ask me!

so part of my motivation in writing this post is a hope that your responses will restore some of my faith in humanity.

I have a feeling humanity doesn't give a flip one way or the other.

Football hooligan: would you date one?
Posted: 7/27/2008 10:10:18 AM
Just a guess, but I think "football" in this context means soccer, and I think the OP is referring to soccer fans who lose control after their team wins/loses a big match. They're usually drunk, and they go about destroying property and assaulting people. If the OP had a raid on his home due to hoolliganism, he probably did something a lot worse than smash bottles in the street.

It's similar to the rioting that goes on in many U.S. college towns after a big sports victory.

Putting your legs behind your head
Posted: 7/25/2008 2:26:43 PM
That yoga position is called nidrasana or sleeping yogi.

Yes, I can do it. Both legs behind my head and my hands clasped underneath the small of my back.

I demonstrated the position in an auditorium of yoga devotees once, and the crowd did buzz. Several men introduced themselves to me after. One asked his girlfriend to introduce us! So it does seem that men appreciate flexibility in a woman.

A tip on this position: Work on getting the less flexible leg behind your head first. The more flexible leg will then hold it in position when you're in full posture. And have patience with yourself.

Girls what things do only talk to other girls about?
Posted: 7/24/2008 4:51:11 PM
We obsess about the length of our periods. The girls with short ones feel inferior to the girls with long ones. We figure longer is better and that men feel the same way. No amount of reassurance can make us think differently. We're certain girls who go six days or more are having a more satisfying menstrual experience, as well as grabbing all the hot guys. We wonder if period lengthening pills that are sold on the Web really work. We buy hot red sports cars to compensate for insufficient napkin stainage.

Well, you asked ...

The 3 most Important Habits for Vibrant Health??
Posted: 7/23/2008 2:16:34 PM
I believe that modern medical advancements and good health habits can peacefully co-exist and complement each other.

Personally, I'm grateful that most of my generation was spared the ravages of polio due to the development of the Salk vaccine. I'd further like to point out that polio was a disease of developed nations where sanitation was good. It was unknown in countries with poor sanitation.

A lot of guys sing like Elvis. They're called Elvis impersonators.

Of the man selections you're offering, I pick the guy who makes me laugh.

I'm neutral on the singing guy. He'd have to tell jokes to get me interested.

The "yes man" is just plain ugh. Even if he tells jokes.

What is the best running shoes for you?
Posted: 6/23/2008 11:44:15 AM
^^^^
What he said.

Also: When you go to the store, let the person who is fitting you know the surface you will be running on and the weekly mileage you expect to be doing. Low-mileage shoes should cost less than shoes built for high mileage. Stick with the familiar name brands: Saucony, Asics, New Balance, Nike, etc. The New Balance brand builds its women's shoes with a women's last (shoe form) that accounts for the narrower heel that women have as compared to men.

A good running shoe store will let you run in the shoes before you buy them, so make sure you take them for a spin in the parking lot or inside the store.

My personal preference has always been Asics, but you should get what feels right to you. You can check out shoe reviews at "Runner's World's" Web site. Another place for good shoe information is a retail site: roadrunnersports.com.

Happy running!

Maintaining morning height
Posted: 6/20/2008 12:22:43 PM
Yoga and pilates work on strengthening core muscles, which can hold you more erect. These two forms of exercise, which are actually very similar, also emphasize good posture and make you aware of poor postural habits. When your posture improves, you'll naturally stand taller.

I've been practicing yoga for seven years, taking a 90-min. class 5-7 days a week. My measured height has increased 1/4 of an inch over that time. It's not that I suddenly had a growth spurt in my 50s. It's that I've been able to reach my correct height through stronger muscles and better posture.

So I can confirm what you've heard about yoga and pilates. The key is to be regular in your practice and listen very carefully to the teachers' instructions.

Achilles tendon rupture?
Posted: 6/19/2008 5:00:13 PM
Two good friends of mine (both male) had this surgery after basketball injuries. Full recovery took about a year for both, though they weren't on crutches for that long. Tendon repair is very slow going, so tell your father to have patience. He'll be able to walk while the tendon continues to heal.

Both of my friends had good recoveries. They were cleared by their doctors to resume all activities they participated in before surgery, but both chose to give up team basketball and other activities with a high risk of injury. They're still very active and athletic but choose exercise that is less likely to tear up their tendons.

I hope this is helpful. I wish your dad the best.

Interesting reason to lose weight
Posted: 6/10/2008 3:29:08 PM
Yes, it's perfectly legal for an insurance company to refuse to insure someone due to his/her weight.

It may seem discriminatory, but it's not.

It's similar to denying someone car insurance if he/she has had a lot of wrecks.

It's similar to charging smokers more for insurance than non-smokers.

With insurance companies, it's all about risk. They pay a lot of money to their actuaries, who crunch numbers to determine who is high-risk and low-risk. Your friend might not seem a risky bet to you, but the actuaries have determined otherwise.

I wish your friend all the best as she follows her dietician's plan and continues to lose weight.

Nobody likes a hater. Go with your instincts on that.

Your profile isn't cheesy, like your buddies say. Cheesiness can be fun (in a cheesy kind of way). The problem with your profile is that its similar to what a lot of guys write. If you're going to go the generic route, you're going to get the generic response, which is READ/ DELETED.

Send your profile to the profile reviewers for further guidance.

Does walking ruin you for running?
Posted: 6/5/2008 4:55:47 PM
I can't imagine a reason why walking would "ruin" someone for running. It sounds like total BS to me.

For one thing, many marathoners take long walks after completing a marathon to help their bodies recover. For another thing, many marathon training programs for first-timers combine running with walking as a way of building mileage and endurance. For a third thing, I know several marathoners who have actually improved their times by walking portions of the distance.

I agree with what a previous poster said: Running can ruin you for walking.

Breathing through the nose
Posted: 6/5/2008 4:36:37 PM
Breathing through the nose sends the breath deeper into your lungs and expands your lung capacity.

I think the suggestions to practice yoga breathing techniques (pranayama) are good ones.

Lungs can atrophy over time if breathing is shallow, so the habit of breathing through your mouth can actually work against your overall fitness.

The benefits of deep breathing are numerous, but perhaps the best one is: IT FEELS GOOD!

Blisters... OUCH
Posted: 6/5/2008 3:56:30 PM
Your blisters are going to hurt until they heal. Continuing to run and putting gook and moleskins on the blisters is impeding the healing process.

I know it's hard to take a break from your training -- I was a marathoner for 13 years, so I feel your pain -- but that's what you have to do or the problem will get worse.

Keep your feet and blisters clean and dry. Use just a little Neosporin on the blisters; don't glop it on. Vasoline is for PREVENTING blisters, not healing them. Same with Second Skin. It's for preventing problems. It's not to be used on broken or blistered skin. The antibiotic in Neosporin will keep the blisters from getting infected. If the blisters are "weeping," cover them with a light Band-aid.

The more air you can get to the blistered area, the better. Wear light, absorbent socks and loose, comfortable shoes.

In my experience, it takes about three days of no running for the pain to stop, but it depends on how bad the blisters are. Don't run until the pain has stopped and the area has scabbed over.

When your blisters heal and you're back training again, always put a light coating of Vasoline on the areas where you tend to blister. Then put on your liner socks and then a thicker, "shock-absorbing" sock such as Thor-Los.

Good luck at the marathon!
