Is intellect as important as attractiveness?

Would I continue dating a girl that was really smart?

Well, my I've broken up with girls in the past because they weren't that smart, so yeah, I would continue dating her over the smoking hot one with no brains.

Satellite Interent Access
Posted: 5/5/2007 4:44:16 PM
1) what do you use ?
Bi-directional sat. link

2) why did you pick it ?
It's a remote camp. We can't even get power and 1/2 the supplies have to be brought in via helicopter. We didn't have a choice.

3) are you satisfied ?
Not initially. It's very easy for the link to become saturated, but once we got some good QoS rules set up and some very heavy contect filtering it got much better.

4) do you experience frequent or any downtime ?
Every major storm that goes through....

wifi, free wireless internet, hotspots in Calgary

Well, considering that it's his AP they're connecting too, I have no idea where you got the idea it's encrypted. All he has to do is copy the SSL traffic and crack it, and he has the encryption.

His scenario is plausable.

Rental Increases

Fixed term and hybrid tenancies typically have a fixed rent for a specific term of tenancy. Obviously the landlord cannot increase the rent during the term.

And that is why I sign a lease......

So let me see if I get this right. You want to do a green screen backgroud that you can then change to whatever you want to show up? Like what they do for TV/Movies/weather broadcasts?

That's not a driver issue, that's an application issue.

Hot and Cute Picture...

For the record i have my A+ and Network + certs

Then you're aware of how much of a joke those are, right? Any person in IT who can't pass those without studying for them probably shouldn't be in IT at all.

And as for pulling those out when discussing IT stuff with fellow IT people, it's like invoking Godwins law to successfully debate a subject.

Here are a few things I think all IT people can agree with:

1) Not all programs are created equal
2) There is no such thing as a program that will do everything. AVG won't catch all viruses, neither will Norton. There is only the best program for the current job.
3) Not all viruses are created equal. Some kill your system, some do almost no damage.
4) Talking geek will confuse most people.

Internet Connection Problems
Posted: 4/28/2007 11:19:30 AM

again what is that supposed to signafy?....

It has to do with how a traceroute works. I'm trying not to bore you with the mundane details here, but I don't think there is anyother way.

If you were plugged into a linksys router, the number one line on your tracert would have been your router. Since you don't have a router, your first hop is actually located on your isp.

That's why it's signifigant how you are set up.

Internet Connection Problems

Well, that shows you that it's not a DNS problem.
It also shows you that the connection did not even get to your first hop. Depending on how you are set up your first hop is either in your house of at your ISP. How exactly are you connected to your ISP from your computer?

For example, does it go Computer --> Router --> Cable/DSL Modem?
or
Computer --> Cable/DSL Modem instead?

Drinking Socially
Posted: 4/25/2007 10:48:24 PM

"Social smoking" suggests those individuals who typically enjoy a cigarette once in a while, probably while out doing their "social drinking".

There are some people that do enjoy the occasional smoke. I'm not one of them, but I do have a friend that I've only seen smoke 3 or 4 times in the last year. Not sure what it is, but he does enjoy the occasional smoke. To me that's social smoking.

6megabit connection in house on how many systems
Posted: 4/25/2007 10:36:50 PM

my connection speed is 6 megabits divided by 5 meaning if all of my systems are on regardless if Im using them or not

WHAT??? Lets not give out bad information here. Just becuase you have a second device running doesn't mean you just lost 1/2 of your bandwidth. Read up on how ethernet handles things like switching. Not to mention the fact that a machine (like an XBOX) doesn't just sit there and "reserve" X amount of bandwidth for itself. Yes, it does get 100 or 10 mbps, but that's only to the first switch, and from there at the uplink it shares the line as determined by the switch, not the device. Generally speaking, the switch determines who gets how much traffic based off on how much traffic is being used. If one device has twice as much traffic entering the switch, the switch will give it 2/3 of the uplink.

I can't recommed one, but I would warn you to be careful about the one you choose. Some of them managed to really piss off major government officials last year (I think last year...) when a newspaper hired a couple of them to dig up information on people like the Senate Whip and the Canadian Privacy Commish. Not all of their techniques were 100% legal.....

Try this (sorry, but it may seem a little complicated), and I'm assuming that you are running XP.

All commands you have to type in are enclosed in by " ". Don't type those in, just the commands within.

Click on Start -> Run
Type in "cmd" and press enter.
That will open a black dos box (OMG!!! DOS!!! he he)
Type in "ping 216.109.112.135" and press enter.

You will get 1 of 2 things:
1) Request Timed Out (or something similar).
or
2) Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes =......

You want number 2.
If you get number 2, then type in "ping yahoo.com" and press enter.
You should get a similar thing to the first ping. However, you might also get: ping request could not find host yahoo.com. please check....

Could you also type in "ipconfig /all" , and then post the information here? It would be great if you could do it twice, one working one not. Also let us know what the ping results are.

*edit* I know this may seem redundant to what you just did, but it will help us narrow down what the issue is.

Assuming that you pay your bill through a credit card, call your provider back and when they tell you that you're not a customer, tell them that you're going to dispute the charges with your credit card company. Watch how fast they find your account then. Once they've found your account, you can then go about getting it fixed.

And, if they still can't find your account then you can open one up and pre-pay it will all the money you just got back from your credit card company.

How's the job market for web design, programmers etc.?
Posted: 4/14/2007 12:23:25 PM
^^^

You know, tech support sucks to do, but you have to pay your dues. If you want to go to an admin type position (database, server, etc), then tech support is usually how you start out. Put in a few years of that, and then transfer out. If you can move into a NOC style position then you're doing good. You're not going to get into a good admin position without paying your dues first.

That being said, that doesn't mean you have to go work for some ISP style helpdesk. Find some small non-profit company that needs someone new to the industry. Be creative, and find your own niche.

did women kill chivalry? what do we need to do to bring it back?
Posted: 4/12/2007 8:13:10 PM
Oh man, 10 pages of replies...

To me there are a few distinctions that should be made.

1) A man is someone with a****past the age of puberty
2) A gentleman is someone that will open doors for women, give up their seat, etc.
3) A chivalrius man is someone who goes to the defence of another person in need of assistance without having to be asked.

At any given time, a male can be any combination of the three. A man charging through a crowd to answer to a cry of help is being chivalrious, but at the same time not being a gentleman by pushing people around. A man, on a date where he holds the doors, seats, etc. for his date, is being a gentleman, but at the time there is no reason for him to be chivalrious. However, a chivalarious man will also have internal attributes that may never be seen, but at still there. For example, when a man feels that giving his word is worth more then all the signatures in the world, and actually means it, well, that is an example of an internal attribute.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that being a gentleman is a way of living. Being a chivalarious man is a way of being. I don't know if that makes any sense at all.

Now, did women kill chivalry? Yes, in a way I think they did. As chivalry and being a gentlemen are linked in many peoples minds, when women started berating men for being gentlemen, both died a very slow and painful death. Well, it's not dead yet, but it's laying on the floor in a pool of blood and the ambulance is caught in traffic.

To me it's a very sad state of affairs when the OP's question even gets thought, let alone asked. Being willing to sacrifice myself for the sake of another has nothing to do with how strong the other person is, or how much they have to contribute to society compared to me, any number of various things. It's more a matter of the fact that I'm in a position to help at that given time. Add in to that a dose of common respect for others, and you have the start of a great working society.

sadly, others have said these things in much better ways, so I'm just going to leave it at that.

smokers
Posted: 4/10/2007 9:25:27 PM
I'm currently on attempt number .....wait, I don't have that many fingers.

I've smoked for 10 years, and the easiest times I've had in quitting have been when I've been dating a non-smoker. As mentioned earlier, people will do things for others they wouldn't do for themselves.

Now, as for
I heard this before but I gotta tell you that very few smokers go robbing banks over cigs

The reason for that is because the physical craving for nicotine is actually quite small. That's why every smoker who quits is supposed to find something to occupy themselves when a craving starts, most of it is mental. You start to have a craving, so your mind picks up on that, then it becomes something you think about, which makes it harder to ignore, which makes the craving stronger, which makes it harder to ignore, which only AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An interesting read is Alan Carrs "easy way to quit smoking"
http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Nonsmokers/dp/1402718616/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-6795667-1712006?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176265251&sr=8-1

It worked for me until I slipped up a few months later and had a smoke. It does go in and explain how the nicotine works and what part of it is addictive. Great read.

To Pic Or Not To Pic
Posted: 4/10/2007 8:24:09 PM
While I am sure that this is 100% inaccurate, I'm going to give you a small play-by-play of things that go through a guys heads when he reads a profile with no pic.

"Hmm...no pic. what the hell, lets see.
A few extra pounds? Considering how many women lie on here, she's probably got more then a few extra...
Hm.. a heavy smoker who drinks 'socially'.

Goodbye"

Like I said, it's probably not at all close to reality, but a smiling pic can offset that. It shows what you consider "a few extra pounds", and being an "often" smoker, if your teeth are white it shows that you do try to take care of yourself.

So yes, a pic is important, if only to help sell yourself.

Drunk Driving in Alberta
Posted: 4/9/2007 9:40:22 PM

So what would you change? And what are you doing to prevent impaired driving?

Well, first time offence (and depending on how over the limit they go), it would be a fine with a little bit of jail time. A second offence would be a 90 day suspension with your vehicle being impounded. A third offence would be a 120 day suspension and your vehicle impounded and sold.

that being said, there has to be some leeway in the system. For example, someone who has a BAL of .082 would not have the same punishment as someone who has a BAL of .10

As for what I'm doing, well, my friends know that I'll come pick them up from teh bar if they ever need it and I always have a couch available. I also walk to the bars if I plan on having more then 3 in the night.

Calgary's booming huh ?
Posted: 4/9/2007 8:03:33 PM
The vacancy rate is up to 1%? Wow, the boom must be over. :P

Seriously, as others have said, if you don't have a place to live before you get out here, then don't bother. I'm hoping this boom ends soon. I'm in a field that is not overly impacted by oil, so I'll still have a job if the bottom drops out of oil. When that happens (and any native Calgarian can tell you it will), this place is going to become a ghost town.

u are the one calling names not me

.
and yet,
.

only the weakest minds need to resort to violence

i find it funny yas like to pick on my grammar it really shows how intelligent and above me you are

the military is just another form of prostitution

sadam /hitler/bush etc are all members of your mindset and your military group
so dont try to pretend that u are above them

oh its impressive ur kids read better than you

Come on, you've been sitting there and tossing insults towards him, and everyone that supports the military, and then claim you're not?

Anyway.

Yes, it sucks about you having some crushed fingers, but that has nothing to do with your spelling or grammer. As my parents would say, it's just an excuse to be lazy. I'm saying this as nicely as I can think of, and don't mean it to be a personal attack. Please start using things like periods if you want someone to take you seriously. When someone has to read a sentance 3 or 4 times just to figure out what it's trying to say makes it very hard for them to understand what you are talking about. The harder your audience has to work at understanding your message, the less impact your message will have. And while grammer and spelling have little to do with intelligence, taking the time to correct it does show your audience that you are not just spouting off for the sake of spouting off.

Now, as to why I've even getting involved in this conversation... Well, anytime someone calls my friends and family members "baby killers" (I believe that was the favoured term in Vietnam), then yes, I'm going to get my back up on that and defend them. To me, someone calling them that *is* personal, and I will always take it that way.

Now, working through your post. You called militaries "the governments paid assassins". Then you try to backtrack and say you wouldn't accuse Canadian military of that since they haven't done much other then fill sandbags. Not true. We send tons of people every year overseas for peacekeeping missions. Look at Rawanda, the Balkans, and Cyprus. All places Canadian military has had a signifigant presence, all in the interests of peace. The goal there has been peace. In fact, peacekeeping is very hard on troops since they have so many rules and regulations about how, when, and where they can defend themselves. There is nothing more frustrating to a soldier then knowing they have the ability and the equipment to help someone out that needs it, and not being allowed to since their chain of command has said no. Rawanda is a prime example of that. Lots of soldiers wanted to go when the call for help went out, but the requests were blocked at the UN. When the soldiers came across some of the genocide, they were not allowed to go track down the people who did it, even though they had the ability and equipment to do so. They couldn't defend eveyone, and they couldn't even save all those they tried to defend, but those soldiers did the best the could with what they had. A lot of those soldiers came back very messed up in the head over what they saw, but none of them said they wouldn't go back if they were needed.

As for flying over to fight for the wrong side showing how misinformed the soldiers are, well, they don't really get much of a choice in the matter. They have to follow (legal) orders, and they don't get to decide which ones are legal or not without a huge risk. They aren't lawyers, so they have to assume that the order is legal unless it is very excessive.

As for fighting for peace. Why is that not possible? The people that linked arms and set themselves as human shields are fighting. People that work everyday to promote peace are fighting. It may not be violent, but it is fighting. It is something they have a passion for, and they are working towards that end. Amnesty International fights for prisioner rights, but they have no weapons. Fighting for something you belive in does not require violence, but a passion for what you are doing and for why you are doing it. What peace groups are you a part of? How many letters have you written to the Government explaining your position and that we should get out of the Middle East and let those people work out their own problems? How many phone calls have you made? Or perhaps you've gone door to door explaining to people what you belive in and asking for their support?

As for peace breeding peace, that works great until a bully shows up and you have no way to defend yourself. While I believe the human race has great potential for peace and harmony, I am also very aware that we have great potential to do the most horrid things to each other. I saw on the news recently that something like 1 in 100 people are incapable of feeling empathy. Well, it's no wonder then that we have people like Bush, and Saddam, and hell, even Bundy floating around. Until we are able to get that part of our humanity bred out of us (I do not want to see how that would be achieved), we will have to deal with it, and there is nothing else we can do.

Anyway, this post has gone on long enough.

Lets see if we can make this a little more readable, shall we?

Oh my God, not that tacky quotation! LOL, Damn, I laugh at every time I see that.
So, since we all remember the past, what has changed?
Absolutely nothing.
Idiots are still going to war over the exact same crap.

See how much easier that is to read? You inability to spell simple words though is not my point of posting though.

Both my Grandparents fought in WWII, and luckily both survived. Is war good? No. Is war sometimes necessary? Without a doubt. Was WWI and WWII necessary? Yes, I believe they were. In both cases, a group of countries decided that they had the right to dictate to people in another country what they should believe in and what country they should live in. Did they die needlessly? No, they did not, though it's great that you have the right to say that. Now, if the US (only as an example) were to decide they wanted all of our oil, and invaded, who do you think would try to stop them? Would that be needless death as well? What if Great Britian sent over troops to help us out. Would those soliders die needlessly as well? Or do you feel that might makes right, and that the stronger country is allowed to do what they want, when they want?

Now, as for your comment about
the ones currently in harms way as u call it are there because they want to b there no other reason
...

Have you thought about why they are there? Why these men and women volunteered to go overseas? Well, I can't talk about all of them, but I can talk about my roommate. She originally joined the reserves to help pay for school, to learn new skills, and to make herself a better person. She recently got her orders to go overseas for at least 4 months. Being a reservist, she had to volunteer to go, they don't just pick and choose people at random. She wanted to go not to kill someone, or to watch people blow up, and to have friends die. She volunteered because she thinks she has something to offer her fellow soldiers, and that maybe she would be able to help out a fellow soldier. She knows the risks, and she is aware that she might not come back, but that is now what worries her. Letting down her fellow soldiers is that scares her. Knowing that there is a wounded friend nearby, and she is unable to help them. Knowing that she could have done more, but didn't. Those things scare her, and the chance to help out her friends is why she is going. She knows the meaning of honour, and she has the trust and respect of everyone that knows her. We all support her decision, even another friends who left the military a few years ago and spent quite a bit of time in therapy over what he say while on deployments.

So yes, they are there because they want to be there, but no because they are paid assassins for a selfish governement. And I would love to see you go nose to nose with a soldier and tell them that they are useless and nothing more then an assassin, and good for nothing more.
I just going to end this here. While I could continue on about how having a strong, well trained core of military personnel is essential for a nations wellfare, I think that it's just going to fall on deaf ears.

prenups and marriages today
Posted: 4/6/2007 11:01:30 AM
Would I get one? Of course. To me it's not a matter of do I trust the person or not. When I was young, my parents put a bunch of their money in my name since a 5 yr. old has a much lower tax bracket. That money is still in my name even though it's really my parents money. To me, that is what would be covered in a pre-nup.

Would I trust my wife to not touch that money? yes.
Would I trust her lawyer? Oh, hellllllll no.

Can i run XP and Vista onthe same hard-drive?
Posted: 4/3/2007 4:48:29 PM
This is not a 1 hard drive method, but it works for me and allows me to run as many OS's as I want.

I went out and bought a hard drive tray + some caddys. The hard drive tray is the primary master, so what ever OS is loaded on that HD is the one that boots. Nice, easy, and simple and I don't have to worry about any new install screwing up my MBR

If that's the case, then why not just edit the hosts file? Easy enough to do in notepad.

Transit in Calgary---work to rule
Posted: 4/3/2007 4:44:32 PM

and I heard on the news that one lady got kicked off because she was wearing perfume

The way I see it, she's more then welcome to wear that perfume on the bus as long as I'm more then welcome to puke on her shoes when it causes an allergic reaction.

To me it boils down to choice. I don't have a choice in my allergies. She has a choice in how much perfume she wears, therefore, she loses.

Updates to the driver's training handbook
Posted: 4/3/2007 4:34:16 PM
...and yet after having driven in LA and Vancouver, and still think Calgary and Edmondon have better drivers.

Though I just love tailgaters. I tap my brakes. I tap them again. I downshift 2 gears and pop my clutch.

Thanks to people being idiots, few (if any witnesses) will be able to say that I was slowing down (no brake lights), and good luck proving to your insurance that it's my fault. That being said, when I downshift, I make sure that I have enough room on my tach to punch the gas and get out of there FAST if they don't notice that there is now 6 inches of room between me and them.

I also delivered pizzas for 3 years, so I can get my vehicle in a spot that has 1/2 in. clearance and know exactly where my corners are.

Traffic Ticket Trouble!
Posted: 4/3/2007 4:12:52 PM
What's the worst that can happen if you fight it? You end up paying the same amount and get the same amount of demerits as you would if you pled guilty, and you only lose 1/2 a day of work (if that).

I had a speeding ticket for going 25 over a few years ago (last one I got). I went in and told the people at the window that I did it, but I had good reason. They pointed me to a set of chairs around the corner and told me to talk to a JP. The JP dropped the fine from a couple hundred dollers down to $60 + no demerits, and when I mentioned I was a student, gave me 6 months to pay. hmm...$10/month for going 25 over? Sure, I'll take it.

Go into the court and talk to them. Hell, take Monday off and make it a 4 day weekend, and go in first thing monday. You should be out by noon and hopefully with a much reduced fine.

Good luck.

Chronic Pain
Posted: 3/31/2007 11:52:51 PM
I've had a constat headache for about 10 years now. If a migrane is a 10 on the scale, this sits around an 8 24/7/365. Only thing that I've found works for me is to ignore it. That being said, this is after going to multiple specialists, trying many types of medication, chriopracty, acupuncture, biofeedback, etc. Nothing works on this.

There is a good side though. I have an extremely high pain tolerance now (I get used as a training dummy for PPCT training), and if I ever want to get out of something I just say my headache is really bad

As for the person that mentioned biofeedback... I tried that once. The lady told me to concentrate on something so she could get a baseline reading. She then had me focus on my headache and I spiked all of her machines. That being said, the theory behind it (as I recall) is that they measure small changes in your body. As you focus on different things, you can change your bodies responces to the pain. Do it often enough, and the change becomes easier and easier until you don't think of it anymore.

Vista service pack... does it apply here?
Posted: 3/31/2007 10:19:52 PM
The laptops that we have at work are now only being sold with Vista pre-installed. The first one that came in I poked around it for a while, but wasn't too impressed. Combined with the fact that it took over 45 minutes to get to the initial desktop as opposed to about 15 for a machine with XP installed made us decide to keep out policy of no vista. (45 minute boot time was for a machine right out of the box doing it's initial load)

Not to mention all of the retraining we would have to do, plus fending off all of the "if X gets it, why can't I?" questions that would flood in, plus all of the testing we have to do to make sure Vista works with all of our software (both OTS and custom built). There is just no business case for doing upgrades at this time. Now, as machines get phased out and upgraded we'll look into it again then assuming all of our testing is done.
