Ask a stupid question...

It's a misquotation. The original was "We're here to milk udders."
And udders are here to provide milk.

If it's not worth a hill of beans, just what is a hill of beans worth?

Pit Bulls
Posted: 8/25/2007 3:08:27 PM
Haven't read the whole thread, but most posters seem to agree that the issues are
(1) environment is the most likely cause of the problem - i.e. owner
(2) pit bulls are problematic because of their physiology and behaviour, i.e. when they bite, they do a lot of damage because they are strong and difficult to force to release their "prey".

I suggest three things.
(1)If an owner proves problematic, then ban them from owning dogs.
(2)If they acquire another dog, and the dog commits a crime, then the crime committed should be prosecuted as if the human committed the crime.
(2) If a dog commits a crime, then appropriate and/or consistent punishment be meted out.

I don't think that the breed is really the issue, but I also feel that if the breed is problematic, then we need to deal with the problem. My sister and family owned a golden retriever, the stupidest dog I recall ever meeting. It bit their daughter, and bye bye dog.

I haven't found anything citable which says that pit bulls are inherently problematic. They are strong dogs, no question. They aren't inherently bad dogs. But if they behave badly, they should be punished for their bad behaviour. That's what we do with humans.

The most relevant article (not mere opinionated blather) I've found on the issue is "Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks" from the JAVMA.

It was originally Preparation AH, and the prudes lobbied for a less objectionable name.

Just learned about "Ask A Stupid Question Day", because like sns I'm blanking on a stupid question.

Here's one. Which crossed the road first, the chicken or the egg?

taste like raspberries - surprisingly sweet if you can get past the tartness

I just clicked on profiles. I thought of contacting people, but it could take weeks or months if I'd waited to get responses. It would be a neat way to travel the country, though. Say hello to someone online, "let's have a cuppa, I'm doing a PoF trans-continental tour".

I wasted some time last night trying to walk across the continent from one recently online PoF member to another. I may have been slightly limited by not including men, but I doubt it. I got stuck in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lots of people there, but couldn't find my way out of town and west. If my knowledge of the states was better, maybe I could have taken a more sensible route. Anyone else tried anything like this? Any success? Suggested route?

Karl Rove Resigning!!!
Posted: 8/14/2007 8:38:17 AM
Note that key to maintaining your agenda is to have the justice system biased toward your agenda. In that regard, SCOTUS has Roberts and Scalito thanks to BushCo. The whole Justice department has been politicized, with judicial appointments and departmental hiring both highly political for the past six plus years. Neither the Senate nor the House has the power nor the gumption - so far - to fight back successfully against the Bush/Rove agenda.

You can argue that Rove is leaving the WH with a cloud over his head, or because he wants to spend more time with his family. Regardless, he has implemented his agenda, and the USA will be a long time digging out from under his influence.

Russians Claim North Pole
Posted: 8/12/2007 7:17:25 AM
Hello trolls and others. I mostly agree with mungojoe's arguments, although he's made a couple of points I'd like cleared up.

According to my measurements, the 200 mile EEZ of no country gets anywhere near ( <200 mi.) the north pole. Said slightly differently, the north pole is in international waters.

The key to the Russian claim is the Lomonosov Ridge, and it's a serious claim, which would give them a claim to the north pole. Denmark has a competing claim which also argues that the Lomonosov Ridge is part of their continental shelf. I'm not a geologist, not sure which claim is stronger, but I suspect the Russian claim is. Not saying that either is strong.

When the Russians submitted under UNCLOS, "everyone" responded saying the Russian evidence wasn't clear enough to justify their claim, more documentation was needed.

mungojoe, you mention a competing method for divvying up the ocean floor rights in the Arctic Basin. Can you give some reference to this method? Does it have any legal precedent?

Canada is in the evidence gathering phase, hang in there for the next five years.

Beyond your sun sign...

I know that kris kristofferson wrote a song Jesus Was A Capricorn
The Moody Blues did Gemini Dream
A number of jazz artists have covered a composition Gemini by Jimmy Heath
Leo Rising by Ronnie Montrose (got this from the Rhino album)
Cannonball Adderley, the jazz saxophonist, did a track for each of the signs of the Zodiac.

The music label Rhino issued a CD series, one for each sign of the Zodiac. Each CD contains one of the Adderley tracks. Here's the blurb.

Cosmic Grooves is not only an astrological guide to living, but also the soundtrack for the journey. Tap the potential of all areas of your life. Heed the valuable advice on avoiding potential relationship fiascos, and discover why certain couples are so blissful while others are so volatile. Learn how to let your best qualities work for you. Each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac comes with a hardback, 50-page book with everything from personality assessments to insights into your work, health, style, and love life. All this plus a customized CD based on each Zodiac sign’s individual personality traits. Perfect for discovering yourself, or as a gift for a friend.

If you think this is a must have series, a warning: Rhino may be sold out of Sagittarius, Scorpio, and Capricorn.

And just because I'm pedantic, Pluto isn't a moon, it's known now as a dwarf planet. Blame this all on Eris, the upstart dwarf planet discovered in October 2003.

Ceres, the first dwarf planet to be discovered (1801), is less than half the diameter of Pluto, was originally classified as a planet. With improvements in technology and astronomical observations, it was reclassified as an asteroid in the mid 1800s. Reclassified once more, subsequent to the brouhaha over Pluto and Eris, as a dwarf planet or pluton, in August 2006.

Pluto wasn't discovered until the 20th century, so revision to exclude shouldn't be particularly troublesome

And apparently Indian (sidereal) astrology already accounts for the precession.

For the history buffs, from Wikipedia, dates of discovery

Pluto - February 1930, by Clyde Tombaugh
Uranus - debatable, but March 1781, by William Herschel
Neptune - December 1612, by Galileo
Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus, Mercury - like, forever

The motion of Jupiter along the ecliptic was used by the Babylonians to define the constellations of the Zodiac. I've learned something because of this thread, so although my opinion of the relevance of astrology to my daily life hasn't changed, the thread has cred.

Music trivia time - this could be a new thread, but it's on topic from the previous post by sns

MrPitt and others

Anyone, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, anyone who takes the predictions of astrology seriously needs a reality check. I think that's what MrPitt was saying.

On the other hand, sns was trying to start a conversation with people who are interested in astrology, pointing out some of the arcana of the subject. If you're looking to rationalize your bad habits, then astrology has had centuries of experience in rationalization.

Some people seeking guidance read tea leaves, some people read Tarot cards, some people read the entrails of sheep, some people read the Bible, the Koran, the Talmud, the Bhagavad Gita. Some read L. Ron Hubbard. Some read their daily horoscope. Some people just want to strike up a conversation.

Since so little direct interest in this has been expressed, and it's sure to be very busy, I'm declining to go forward with this as a planned event. Unless suddenly there's an avalanche of interest. I'm interested in the Blues festival in Truro the same weekend, so need to decide now. Since I did suggest this, if we have four committed people, myself included, I'm willing to go ahead, but I'm not sure there's even one committed participant from PoF at this point.

Again, I'm not a fan of corpses around the dinner table. And I'm not psychic, I don't talk to dead people expecting a reply.

You might think there are no interesting Canadian males. if I were to include dead people, I might pick Trudeau myself, but I suggested live women to make myself think. Let's go back to the living, and pick Robert Langlands (for geeks only), John Fraser (former speaker of the House), Jean Belliveau, and one of (Bruce Co(ck)burn, Neil Young, Robbie Robertson).

I never would have thought of Manon Rheaume, but what an inspired choice! I'm a big fan of women's hockey. I'd love to hear what Manon has to say about the sport before it made it to the Olympics, the effort to get it to the Olympics, and what she thinks of the game now.

The reason I limited the number of participants, I wanted to be able to pay attention to essentially all of the conversation. These should be people whose conversation you want to listen to. Now Leonard, Joni, Robbie & Neil, that would be an interesting conversation, lots of music history around that table.

Margaret Atwood and Bill Shatner is certainly an interesting pair. John Glassco and Pierre Trudeau could have their own conversation, I suppose. :-x

If I were going for strictly music, and sticking to my rules, I'd maybe choose Joni Mitchell, Sue Foley, Holly Cole, and Mary Margaret O'Hara. How they'd interact would be interesting to observe. Actually limiting this to musicians seems to have made my choices easier.

I recall a sports broadcaster talking to a musician friend. The broadcaster wanted to know all about the musical acquaintances of the musician, the musician wanted to know all about his sports heroes from the sportsman. Diversity of your companions adds to the conversation.

Do I contradict myself?
Very well, then, I contradict myself;

No rule against picking dead people, but they aren't particularly good at conversation, and some people consider it off-putting to have corpses sitting around the table while having a bite to eat.

Who would you invite for dinner if you had carte blanche? A reasonable number, perhaps four couples.

I remember what prompted this question coming to mind, it was Bill Gates dedicating more of his time to his foundation, and my thinking that working for the Foundation would be an interesting 2nd career for me. I thought, dinner with Bill Gates, that would be interesting. Then, who else would I like to be there, because I'd be tongue-tied. How about Nelson Mandela, Ed Witten, Billy Bragg, Tiger Woods? And then thinking, balance this with women, and the choices were suddenly much more difficult, much less obvious. Reasonably quickly, I came up with Jane Goodall, Marcy Wheeler, Ani DiFranco, Tzipi Livni.

Then I thought, how about some restrictions? Limit it to four Canadians with diverse backgrounds, and to give it a PoF flavour, the men choose women, women choose men. My current choices - Beverley McLachlin, Martha Hall Findlay, Clara Hughes, Sarah Polley, and I have a few alternates in mind if they can't make it. =-)

Now everyone sees why I'm not the life of the party, but the conversation should be interesting.

some people are so anal as to ... post with no substance other then the intend to out soemone in some way.

And some people are so imprecise as to paint a myriad of posters with the no substance label, when mayhap they were referring to one poster in particular.

It is a courtesy to your readers to correct your own typos. It may be pedantry to correct another's mis-spelling, but it may also be helpful and edifying.

Hello, my name is hardpromises, and I too am a habitual post editor.

I'm also pedantic, and would like to point out that snippet has two p's.

Why is meaned not the past tense/participle of the verb mean?
Actually it is, if you meant to take the mean of a set of numbers.

There's a trivia game for a geek group. Come up with verbs that have past participles that end in t, past tense ending with ed, or not. Verbs ending in "l" or "n" seem most relevant, but I have a feeling that "m" has a few examples.

E.g.

burn/burnt/burned,
feel/felt/feeled,
smell/smelt/smelled,
spill/spilt/spilled,
warm/warmt/warmed,
darn/darnt/darned.

burnt toast, spilt milk, etc. Is there a rule of thumb here that I'm missing? Are those adjectives or adverbs?

This might explain the word pelt, as the past participle of peel.

Geez, I'd better go now, and hope I don't get banned for being a pedantic geek!

Why not have a brief comment adjacent to "Do you have children?" discouraging pictures which include their kids? E.g. please do NOT post pictures of [your] children.

this is criminal in my opinion
Posted: 6/24/2007 8:11:50 AM
My brother smokes, but apparently only outside. We recently drove to Fredericton & back, sharing same room overnight. I asked if he's tried to quit, he implied yes, unsuccessfully. Every time we stopped, he lit up a cigarette. Every time I was ready to move on, he extinguished his cigarette. My point, most smokers are courteous, and refrain from smoking if it will bother others. Nicotine is very addictive. Many smokers want to quit, but haven't been able to.

Maybe the people the OP saw were different, maybe they were obnoxious sociopaths who don't care about anyone but themselves. I don't know. I think geneseo is mostly saying - why is everyone so judgmental? Life is tough enough without the thought/behaviour police watching your every move. We should be educating the individual to take individual responsibility for their actions.

A few other comments. Smoking is not yet illegal, child abuse is. If you feel strongly about this being child abuse, talk to your lawyer/councillor/MLA/MP, and see if smoking in a confined space like that with children present is considered child abuse. If it isn't, ask your councillor/MLA/MP to work towards making it so. Don't just complain, do something to follow through. Geneseo may not agree with you, but he doesn't have to.

If you truly think it is criminal behaviour, work to make it criminal. However, I don't want laws that tell me I must e.g. wear a red shirt on Friday.

The Nice Guy Excuse
Posted: 6/17/2007 7:59:20 PM
remember the definition of "Nice Guy" that started this. The woman wants to send him packing, but gently. She uses the "You're a really nice guy, but..." line to get rid of him. And it's happened to Mr. Nice Guy several, perhaps many, times, and he's wondering why.

Women like him OK, but have decided they want something more. What more could they want, since he's a really nice guy, right? He's missing something, some charisma, some sense of who he is, some charm that implies, lady, I'm worth the investment.

OP sensed all that, and gave good advice. Be yourself. Pursue what you're interested in. Insist on being treated with respect, and reciprocate. If you find someone interesting, let them know you find them interesting.

You don't have to be Nelson Mandela or Bono or Russell Crowe. You can be Bart Simpson, as long as you are interested in the woman, and interesting to the woman. But if you continue to be "Mr. Nice Guy", expect to be treated as "Mr. Nice Guy".

HeyYou/ReginaSK

The argument you make, that Saskatchewan is too small to matter is the same argument made by people too apathetic to vote. - I'm one of 5,000 or 50,000, or 5,000,000, or 5,000,000,000, of what consequence are my actions? So it doesn't matter. - Ask the Americans, where Al Gore won the 2000 election, or didn't, depending on which votes you count, whether it matters.

You claim no responsibility for your actions, because your impact is so small.

If I steal one cookie from the cookie jar, nobody will notice. If twenty people steal cookies from the cookie jar, will anyone notice? Eventually, you'll notice. Saskatchewan has fewer citizens than Alberta, but so what? If I take away your rights, but let everyone else keep theirs, what does it matter? You're of little or no consequence, right? Rights and responsibilities are a matched pair.

I'm one of the proverbial nice guys, and I agree in the large. However, women are using code then, when they tell the guy, "You're a really nice guy, but I need to iron my jeans/walk my dog/visit my aunt". Tell them they may be a nice guy, but their insecurity isn't a good basis on which to build a relationship.

That insecurity gets reinforced every time the nice guys are told there's nothing wrong with them. Help them by telling them what you really see as the problem. Do it gently, but be frank.

And to all, especially the nice guys. Insecurity isn't something you'll overcome over night. The OP has some good advice. Stand up for yourself. Two of my golden rules -

Do unto yourself as you would have others do unto you.
Don't do unto yourself as you would not do unto others.

You don't have to be a jerk. Start treating yourself as an equal member of society, deserving of the same treatment everyone else deserves.

To the nice guys. If you have a deep seated problem, then solving it won't be easy, but working towards a solution will do wonders for your self-confidence.

Too Honest?

Let's say I've met this lady in need of a make-over. Shouldn't I tell her that some fashion advice from a friend before heading out to that first meeting will help her get past some of the things that will turn guys off? A haircut and reasonable clothes might at least force the guy to admit to himself that his reaction is based on outward appearances. You only get one chance to make that first impression. Why set yourself up for failure, unless that's what you want? Her not being up front about her appearance might be understandable, given your description, but the hair and fashion she can do something about.

You also said her photos were essentially lies. A comment to that end - I was somewhat put off by the discrepancy between your photos and the woman I met. If you're not Elle MacPherson, you shouldn't be using her photos. - is honest without being cruel.

Hard promises will promise no more.
His heart has washed up ashore.
A heart made of wood
Can be misunderstood
And broken and burned and ignored.
