I Didnt get to say goodbye to my DADDY
Posted: 2/28/2009 6:23:16 AM
I didn't go through every post here so I'm not quite sure what tone has been set.
This is a subject that I found by accident and just grabbed me.
My Dad was taken from us almost 37 years ago in a work accident. Being the oldest of 6 I was expected to be the strongest which would be in keeping with the disposition of what I believed my father had from the years I can remember. We were never a touchy feely family by any stretch of the imagination and were for the most part a very traditional type of family for that time. I never really new my father very well because of that. It was only after I had left home and just a year or two before he died that I was beginning to develope a relationship with him - as an adult this time. I was really starting to enjoy those visits and beginning to know what he was all about. Sadly an accident took that all away. For many years after I used to have recurring dreams that didn't reflect highly about him. Dreams that he had abandoned us seemed to be the most prevalant. I didn't even realize that I had those recuring dreams til years after experiencing them. Perhpas a self-denial mechanism. Whatever the reason, I finally put my finger on it as an inner hurt that I never expressed outwardly for so many years. It was til I came to that realization that thos dreams dissappeared and I saw (or dreamed of) my father in a better light as was able to look to the happier times we had spent together.
The thought of never being able to say Goodbye to my Dad does not weigh as heavily upon me now as it used to as my Mother was taken unexpectedly from us 5 years ago. Again, I was not able to say Goodbye to her either. I did however have the comfort in knowing (and learning from my past) that the last time I talked to her it was our usual positive conversation and I was ale to tell her I love her like I always did. Something I never got to say to my Dad but made sure I would never forget to say to my Mom each and every time we talked.
Never let a talk or conversation end on a bad note with your parents and never ever forget to tell them you love them each and every time. Something I always practiced with my daugter and never plan to stop.

My Joke Thread.

This is just too funny Miss Unique

this cowboy rides up to a saloon with his horse, hitches his horse to the post and goes in to join a few pals for a few drinks..after they all get pretty drunk, the horse's owner says to the men"hey,i'll give 50 bucks to anyone who can make my horse laugh!"..one pretty smashed guy says "i.ll do it!" and he goes outside to where the horse is while his pals watch at the window laughing their heads off at the thought of what this guy is trying to do..but to their amazement, they see that the horse starts laughing!..the guys goes back into the saloon and back to the table with his friends..the horse's owner, still shocked says "ok..now i'll give you 100 bucks if u can make my horse CRY!"..the guys says "no problem"..and goes out to the horse..and as the guys watch from the window,,sure enough..the horse starts crying!!..the guy comes back in..the horse's owner pays him and says''ok..heres your money..but i gotta ask ya..HOW the heck did u make my horse laugh and then cry?"..the guy replies, with a smirk.."well,..the first time i went out ,i told him i'm bigger than he is...the second time..i SHOWED him!!"

I found some disturbing pictures on my boyfriend's computer!!!
Posted: 4/27/2008 10:57:30 PM

That is a very naive statement. I have nothing to hide, but some things are just personal that I do not want to share with anyone including a partner. We are still seperate people, even within the bounds of a relationship and I think people should be allowed some sense of privacy .

If you feel you need to know everything and read everything your partner has ever done, then something is not right in the relationship to begin with...
Agreed, well put!! Perhaps a little self confidence or insecuity issues surfacing?

when your kid turns 18
Posted: 3/23/2008 12:22:38 PM
An acceptance letter is one thing. Having the courage to make that big step and leave home is another. Especially being that far away. She may have to let it digest a bit and perhaps the reality of the situation may present itself. That reality may spark a bit of responsability and dedication towards her doing her part of the "turning 18 and moving away" scenario we call growing up and being an adult.

I feel for ya. My daughter just turned 18 today. Here comes another chapter in our lives.

2nd Chance?
Posted: 5/29/2007 12:47:49 PM

It broke my heart the first time, and i guess i'm scared to let her back in.
Sounds a bit like trust issues issues here. Are you afraid it will happen again - her asking to put the relationship on hold? You remained friends (and I assume contact) throughout this ordeal of hers and should be able to clearly see if there's true honesty (or not) in her request to get back together. To me, I think there's something else that you may not be sharing that's not making this (and what should be) a simple decision for you.

Do you focus on the destination or enjoy the journey?
Posted: 5/29/2007 12:16:50 PM
I have no idea what my destination is or will be. I'd like to think my journey is taking me in the right direction. My journey has taken a lot of twists and turns and has had some real good bumps to it too, but I wouldn't trade any of it. I think everyone needs to have some sort of goal or objective in their life. As one posted before, I'd like to find a balance in how I live. I cannot see myself living in a reckless type of abandon that's usually ascociated with living for today and don't care about tomorrow. However, I do try to enjoy the journey when I can and I'll leave this earth with a hefty mortgage too.

southernhighlander: Thanks for the comments. Ya, I picked that Jersey up during my 95 tour in the Sinai. I believe the world cup was being held in South Africa and since there were lots of Commonwealth and European units there, it was quite common to strut around in the Jersay of your home country. Since Canada was fairly new the rugby scene it was a bit of an extra kick to see them make the World Cup. Since no Canadians had Jerseys I took it upon myself to make the right contacts in the Toronto area and had 60 Canadian jerseys shipped over to theatre. I was fortunate to acquire an original All Blacks jersey that was made by the original manufacturer (in Australia of all things) that was a special run made for the Kiwi troops in the Sinai as well acquiring both Aussie jerseys as well. Just a little trivia there.

Where was I?? Oh ya. Perhaps another story or two might be of relevance. The camp where I stayed at in the above mentioned was only 15 minutes away from the Israeli border where we would have to be processed by Egyptian, then Pallestenian and finally by Isreali at the Rafah border entry point. Rafah is also on the southwest tip of the Gaza Strip. In essance we we restricted from even entering the Gaza area my whole tour. It was deemed completely unsafe for any of us to go there unless it was work required. That in itself says something. The peoples that I would see and meet at the beaches of Ashquelon were not always Isreali, in fact, it was predominantly Pallestenian. I little less so in and around Ashdot and even less again as you go further east towards Tel Aviv. I could not give you a diffinitive as to why Pallestenians live in the cordanned of areas of Gaza, West Bank etc. I like to believe it is by choice and I'll explain later.
If you travel to Jerusalem you'll find a mix of Pallestinian and Jews liveing there. There really no set segregated areas that I could visably see but I could see that there was differences in the way they lived, kept their homes and how they conducted themselves in a daily manner. I could easily see that in one area there was well kept, manicured, tended too and in a very good condition homes while just nearby (and not separated by any form) were smatterings of homes that looked in a distressed state where they were run down, not manicured and generally not well taken care of - externally wise. I've come to learn that that is the nature of certain peoples. It's not because they are being hard done by whatsoever - it is by choice and cultural/historical values of these peoples. Whereas, most Israeli homes would look almost similar to an everyday North American home in the way they keep it - again a choice by that type of people.
Now my other story. A few of us decided to make an off duty day trip to Jerusalem. We visited numerous shops in the main square which were owned by both groups. We went to a small shop in a resedential area that sold Olive wood carvings. One of our group needed to pay with his credit card and so the shopkeep was very accomodating and offered to drive him to his other shop in town to swipe his card to pay for his purchases. We were to meet at a specified place in the main square. We later saw our friend behind a 20' high fenced compound of the local police station that borders the edge of the square. We later found out from him that the shopkeep (Pallestinian) was in such a rush to complete the transaction that he ran an Israeli checkpoint which gave cause for a persuit and internment of both when eventually stopped. It happens regularly that these sorts of incidents occur and mostly because of one side not recognizing the athourity of the other and thereby challenging it and then who knows what will ensue. If you can glean from this that sometimes certain Pallestinians make there own trouble for themselves. It should also be noted that Israeli and Pallestinian cars are plated differently and is easily discerned.
I could also tell you of other stories I've been privy to but all usually come down to the same thing. The differences in history, back ground, ethnic beliefs, values, family of origin sentiment, cultural values and beliefs make one group very much different than the other. Within the confines of the walls of places like Gaza and the like those unique practices can be exercised to it's maximum, but when in the areas recognized as Israeli, then they would have to conform somewhat and therein lies some of the issues I've just described. Local city ordanances anywhere in North America will stipulate how one will maintain their home (to some degree). What you are and are not allowed to do that would infringe on others living there. This is sometimes even carried to greater extents in certain housing areas as well. The bottom line is rules and adhearance to certain regulations are enforced. Although the Israeli's are not as restrictive as North Americans are, they do try to perpetuate this similar Noth American mindset in how they live and how they conduct their lives. To totally ignore the detracting influences that do arise when Pallestinian try to insert themselves into these areas is no different. Unfortunately, when push comes to shove, and these accepted practices are ignored by the Pallestinains, the outcome is usually a little more dramatic than what we are used to here.
Now the problems that arise within the confines of places like the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, these are generated by a whole slew of reasons outside of those I've previously mentioned. Suffice it to say that those that perpetrate those vengefull deeds against others rely on the protection behind those walls and wonder why there are intrusions into those areas. To apprehend criminals of course - like anywhere else. To hide behind those walls under the guise of a certain sect or organization places a large black mark on that ethnic group and no way reflects what the overall sentiment of those peoples really are. Like I said, they are regular every day people with every day regular jobs (for the most part) working and living well (for the most part) within the rest of the Israeli community. Of course with the odd exception like I mentioned about the shopkeep - but that could happen in any city, in any country in the world and is not exclusive to there.
I hope this would give insurgent and others little more insight about some unique things about that area that will never make the 11:00 news.

Hard Nips in Public
Posted: 5/29/2007 12:36:31 AM

Everyone has nipples....if they are not naked to the eye, what is the issue...both men, women and even animals have nipples. Why have we become conditioned to be embarrassed if they are showing as a little peak. Men have nipples and show them in the summer all the time. Nipplage doesn't embarrass me. It's a normal part of the body and it's covered even...why do we have to act like children or make someone embarrassed by what is normal?
Nice to see some progressive thinking on this. Nice to see - period, if I don't get my eyes poked out from all those great high beams.

notsantos says: "Arabs living in Israel are better off than in Arab lands"
Well, I see that you make the minds up and speak for Arabs....
Again, you are clearly illustrating your utter "arrogance"...
You don't make those decisions, Arabs do....

INSURGENT 4 YOU : notsantos has hit the nail on the head and is spot on in his statement. They do live a better life in Israel.

Perhaps I should also mention that for the past 2 years I'm senior instructor of a cousre that prepares those servicepersons going on deployment over-seas. In that role it's my responsability to know the grass roots feel, gut feeling, attitude, sentiment of the innner actions between the local population and the troops. It's also my responsability to source subject matter experts on the areas of deployment. I hire these experts from an Ottawa based organization that covers every religious and ethnic back ground. For the past 6 months I've enlisted the services of an elderly and very well read and educated Christian Arab that really has his finger on the pulse of any of these areas that we've been discussing. Although I've been enlightened in some areas, I'm glad to say that my interpretations of my past tours and experiences are not far from his own perspectives. That said, how do you figure that the 2 of us have such similar points of view - mine from growing up in suburbia southern Ontario and him from the shoreline farms near the border of Israel and Lebanan. Figure that one out and you may have a better insight about this topic.

notsantos101:
Thank you so much. Insurgent 4you watches too much TV and really, really, really needs to actually visit these so called down-trodden peoples. notsantos101 is on thje money in most of what he's said so it leads me to think that there are sources out there that will clearly reflect what he said and what I've been saying already. There's not enough space or time in this Forum to educate you well enough in the finer aspects of a peoples culture and history. All of your quoting from others who also have never personally experienced it first hand will undoubtedly have the same perspective. Too bad.

"Military induced ignorant views" For pete's sake man I've shopped , dined and associated with numerous Pallestinians in my different tours. How can I have a military view of someone? It's as if you think I'm standing on the other side of a fence, gate or weapon in my dealing with them. How about browsing in their shops, eating in their cafe's or swimming at their beaches. Please, you embarrasss yourself each time you post on something you know little about. It's a shame you don't even know what the routine is for the average serviceperson while on deployment. Again, probably watched too many movies.

Thanks for the well wishes though. But I'm not sure what you mean about "relying on the military as a career for my whole life". Surely, it wasn't my intent and probably not that of others who all of a sudden see themselves at a 20 then 25 and then 30 year benchmark in their career and wonder where all the years went. It all happened rather quickly. At least it did for me. I'd like to think that the military relied on me for service to the Crown. That said, I have no embarrassment about my past and would not trade it for anything. Where in one's life could you travel and see half of Europe, travel the fiords of Norway, seen our own country, coast to coast, was able to visit the Holy Land, the Pyramids of Giza, be able to swim in the Med, the Dead and the Red Seas - all in the same day. I feel very fortunate and will not try to rationalize or justify my military past. I've been able to acquire an admirable profession along the way as well.
May I recommend a vacation to Sharm elShiekh. Then travel up the coast to Tabba and then onwards to Eilat in Israel. Then it's a quick jaunt across westward into Jordan and after all that, compare the peoples, lifestyles and conditions of life from these places. I believe that not only will you truely see some unforgetable sights, but experience a very good cross section of what we've ben talking about. I think your views may change somewhat, or at least, they should.

INSURGENT 4 YOU
I can't believe the spew I'm hearing. I got the feeling someone has made some superficial economic study in an effort to write some thesis. I can't comment on Vietnam (slightly before my time), but I have spent 6 months in Cyprus (delayed deployment due to Turkey's invasion) at the follow of Turkeys invasion, 6 months in the Sinai during the signing of the Camp Davd Accord, 6 months in Sinai again beside Gaza, 6 months in Bosnia and I'm going to Kandahar this July. I've spent enough time "in theatre" to realize that the incidents and accidents that occured during my tour of duty have nothing to do and are not motivated by your perceptual ideas. Your cmments on the treatment of Pallestinians is way off base. I enjoyed a relaxing bit of leave in a nice hotel in Gaza in 79, made numerous trips to other Pallestinian populated areas like Ashdot and Ashqelon in 95. Have seen how Pallestinians live in Jerusalem. Let me tell you straight off, their plight is not that generated by the West. It's a perdicament created by themselves and perpetuated by older traditional sentament and bitterness, not unlike what I saw between Croatians and Bosnians. As a matter of fact, I could almost draw identical similarities between to distinct peoples and would go so far to say that I experienced almost the same between the Turk and Greek Cypriots. Perhaps if you took a little time out from your white bread life, joined the reserves and volunteered for a peacekeeping mission and experienced first hand these so called atrocities, you'll have a different perspective on who the real culprit really is. And it aint the west my friend. Best you ponder on those things your more intuned with and have experience with and not about things you have not seen, felt or experienced first hand like I have. I'm only lucky that I was spared the experience of Ruwanda and Somalia but have worked with fellow service people who have intimate accounts and recollections of these events. And again, its not the WEST that is the sulprit there either. I'd appreciate you refrain from commenting any further on something you've little REAL knowledge of or ANY experience with.

What's al the "Buzz" about anyway. Except for BL62, there's an awfull lot of stuffy attitudes about the subject. More than likely those not quite aquainted with their bodies or have some pre-disposed views on the subject - which is sadly , too bad. I thought we're all a little more mature about this and left those archaic attitudes behind.

OP, the mere fact that you had to ask indicates you may not know men all that well. It's a way of saying who we are, what we like, what interests us, what amuses us, what we enjoy. Perhaps no different than other people who have pet pics, sporting activity pics, vacation pics, work pics, etc. It's all part of the big picture. Not there to impress anyone except perhaps those who are like-minded and have an affinity for same and will understand and appreciate.
I tend to agree with the question about those women who show only neck-up face pics - is there something about not showing a full pic?

As to the poster with the TT2 ...... Did you build it using the 600 pantah?
I have always wanted a 1984 Mike Hailwood replica....very cool bike
Yes I did...... well sort of - it was a 650 Pantah engine hence the nic TTF650. Bought a new but never registered 85 Alazzura in Montreal in 89 from Frank Romanalli and bought all of the necessary TT2 parts to build myself. What couldn't be bought was fabricated from aluminum. 84 Hailwood Replica was always a favourite of mine. I've been a member of DOCC for 18 years.

The most attractive thing about a girl is...?
Posted: 5/7/2007 9:27:40 PM
Once you're past the initial physical appearance attraction part it has to be the mindset or thinking process of a women. What makes her say, think and do what she does. What motivates and drives her. How well can she express herself. Is she moving forward, backward or stuck in a rut. The positive things that keep the attraction going.

Aldershot High, Burlington ... pretty tough school when I was there - - also attended by Cathy Smith (who was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for her role in the injection of the lethal doses that killed Belushi - was convicted of manslaughter & spent 18 months behind bars) AND also by funny man, Jim Carrey. A few football players got their start at Aldershot but not into the game so I can't recall any names. And I thought it was the Home Of The Rednecks

Hilarious House of Frightenstein was totally cool back when we were young
OMG, an old High School chum (Steve Pilcher) was a cartoonist for that show (made in Hamilton I believe). He almost made it to Disney. :(

Admin,

Please bring back the winks. But maybe have them do something cute, like actually wink or wave? And give us the option of deleting the received winks too, incase we're creeped out by the person sending.

Teenage Suicide
Posted: 4/27/2007 3:53:51 PM

lfrl: As I read your post my eyes swelled up with the sad memories of a time last year when my 11yr daughter took a razor blade to her face before she boarded the bus for school. This was all unbeknownst to me. It is a long story that I won't get into but it involved CAS and a short trip to a foster home. My husband (at the time) and I were frantic and living on pins and needles worrying about what she was going to do next to herself.
What was known to me however, was the fact that she was a victim of bullying at her school and that she thought that every kid hated her.
Things worked out eventually with help from private counselling services and CHIMO which is a non-profit organization that deals with youth and family services of suicidal children/teenagers.
Just a month ago, a friend of mine in the USA sent me a DVD copy of "The Secret" and as I sat and watched it my daughter joined me. She turned to me and said that she wished that the people responsible for the "positive thinking, inner spirituality and the laws of attraction" would create a version of these concepts for teenagers! I have to agree with her on that for sure. I turned to look at her and realized at that moment, how far she had come from where she once dwelled in darkness. I was now looking into the eyes of a beautiful, hopeful young person who now realized how special she is in every way and who also now believes that she is capable of GREAT accomplishments and doesn't let the small things get in the way. She now prays everynight knowing that her prayers will be answered.
I pray for peace, harmony and perfect health for your daughter and for you.
The same thing nearly happened to me when reading the oppening post as well.
My daughter, 17 now as well was released from the hospital 2 months ago after her second attempt . Pill overdose both times. What I really dissliked was the arbitrary selection of medication after the first attempt. Which after the second attempt proved to be the wrong original course of action to begin with. Unfortunately we tend to put our faith in the "Professionals" who we believe know what they are doing. I will compare these people no different than car mechanics - there are some good ones and some not so good ones out there. Thankfully, after her second attempt we were able to get to the root of the matter, discontinue the un-needed medication and get down to a real course of interactive medicine. She too suffered from an apparent of lack of self esteem, lack or worthiness, school bullying and a host of similar unhealthy ways of thinking. She's making excellent progress now and moving forward with her life (by all indications). It's a shame that so many till succum to such pressures that at times are self generated. If I were to give any advice, I'd say challenge the integrity of the assigned care giver / doctor if anything just doesn't sit right with you. I would definitely raise a big red flag if the doctor candidly recommended any medication without some substantial testing and supportive collaboration. I do see the areas of fault that lie within her mother and I in where we allowed her to be such a recluse and not promote strong enough for her to interact with others. Whatever happened to the days of "playing" outside for hours on end, getting all of that healthy activity and fresh air and having to come in when it got dark or the street lights came on only to respond to our parent when being called to come home - "Awwwww, do I have to".

I’m not sure exactly the underlying issues with this “ rotational economic disruption campaign” since they were granted this land in 1793, a claim filed in 1995 and accepted valid in 2003.
It would appear the dispute at hand is regarding the illegal dumping of toxic materials in the quarry, the Ministry of Natural Resources ignoring the issues and profiting by the aggregates being removed from the aboriginal land.
I think the timing is quit interesting that it comes in response to a developers plan to build Condominiums using the materials from the quarry.
I guess time will tell and all the relevant issues will be discussed.
This demonstration is just part of the disruption, two other locations are slated to be disrupted; one is the Town of Deseronto and the Provincial Highway!
It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds
OUTSTANDING!!!! Someone has actually delved deep enough into the issues. I'd be interested to know who the actual developers are - Mohawk or other? There are a lot of very creative and successfull entrepreneurs from this Mohawk Band. If this same scenario were to take place outside of a First Nations domain and had different players involved, would the actions taken by these few to create these dissruptions still be looked at and treated the same way? I think not. Safe to say there would be intervention and charges filed. Do we as a nation condon this apparent application of a double standard of the law?
FWIW, the Mohawk peoples are not the only ones against these "dumpings". Other locals not part of the Mohawks are against this as well yet I don't see them initiating similar actions. Perhaps because they realize the possible consequences of such actions.

There's always a few nice sights to see taking the Loyalist Parkway through the "County" around the Bay Of Quinte area. A few nice rustic towns enroute, some nice Tea Houses too. Enter via Trenton area, down to Picton area and then back up to Belleville. Or do the complete loop in the County itself.

There's a brand new Travelodge that just openned which is less than one km from the Base entrance just east of the Base. The Pizza Hut is a 2 minute walk from there as well and it's situated on the south side of Hwy2 almost on the Bay Of Quinte. Next closest accomodation is the Park Motel which has older and newer units. It's just west of the Base and is right beside a MacDonalds and a small strip mall with Zellers and a number of other outlets. From the Park Motel you are within a 2 minute walk to any major chain restaurant and a Timmies is also across the street. I've stayed there a number of times in the past - old but clean and affordable.
Hope this helps.

Excellent suggestion. Done it numerous times in the past when going to Bike Week in Laconia, NH. Very slippery on the eastern side of the gap at the very bottom for those that have never done it before.

Ttf650, to explain a bit. Part of the negotiation process is to make clear on both sides the goals and end product to be had for both parties. I'm simply saying that let's get these things done period. And both sides also need to understand that each side has to give in order to get. The best result is a win, win for both sides. My family has been here for over three centuries and I consider myself Canadian first and foremost, but am sick and tired of having my tax money wasted by inept, spineless political hacks. So why not a grass roots approach? If you look at history you'll see that governments never initiate change, it always comes from those individuals or groups with the passion and vision to set their societies on a different path. So what happens now? do we sit on our asses for another 150 years or do we as a generation get this done and move the country on to other things?
I aggree with you for the most part. But I really don't see what the Mohawks are willing to give up. I travel by and through that area fairly often and I'm not sure what more they want. Aren't most land claims about the band wanting to acquire clear title to, acquire or repossess something. Exactly what is the part that the Band has to give in all of this?
I too am not happy with some of the governments spending policies. If I want to make a change to those spending policies I sure as hell am not going to block a railway. Like I said before, If I had an axe to grind with the government and wanted to be heard and made a blockade on a railway tracks in my hometown, my *ss would be thrown in jail in no time flat. Anybody heard if any of the Mohawks got thrown in jail for this blockade??? I didn't think so. And I haven't even touched onto the safety issues surrounding such an act. And what kind of message does this send to the younger Mohawks??? ..... I wonder??
Hey, here's novel concept. Why not do like the rest of the Canadian public is compelled to do, take it to the courts and let it drag out there. Lets apply the same rules across the board - what a novel concept. It brings to mind the thoughts and actions of the oppressed. I've been through the Mohawk reservation, and it's not oppressed. Actually, there's a considerable amount of flourishing enterprises there. Hell, I took my car there to get painted cause they did the best work around. My work has employed some of their computer services numerous times and I've been affiliated with some of the activities of their own airport and flying school - yes, thay even have their own airport and flying school.
I do have a little insight in some of these issues. I've also attended special seminars and classes geared specifically to the understanding of our First Nations when it comes to recruitment and employment. I've ben exposed to different First Nations from Ontario to Vancouver Island as well. To say I have biases would be far from the truth. Objections to double standards? - you bet!!!!

The problem that is happening with these land claims seems to me to be akin to me purchasing a house, and then 15 years later, the original builders of that home coming to my door and demanding i give them the house back, or pay another $250k now that the homes value has increased, and its not fair that i am getting that value when they didn't.
Good point.

It may come across that I may be a hardliner. And that's fine. If I feel strongly about something it may come across that way. I'm not completely conversant with the First Peoples of this Country. But as first peoples, they will not be the only peoples. We all have to live by the same rules. Well almost everyone. The card carrying members have added priviledges non of us will ever have. Priviledges that are financially and economically generous. When is enough going to be enough. Give it up already. Join the rest of Canada's society and play by the rest of societies rules. Like I said before, (and appears no one is listening), YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. Those beliefs of self inherent rights and priviledges are out-dated. This country is a collage of muti-cultures. Which still flourish (in Toronto for example) as mentioned by a previous poster. These people experience their culture and heritage and it's great to be able to participate in them. BUT and it's a BIG BUT, those cultures are not indulged at the expense of others, their not given special status, their not given anything more than any other Canadian born here or immigrated. How long should this country maintain a double standard so as to honor treaties and agreements made by people so long ago. It reminds me of when a city or town that comes knockin and says they're going to expropriate your property for a new Mall or highway. It happens all the time. NOW, try doing that on a Native land - YIKES!!!!!! Double standard??? - of course there is. Should we perpetuate it? I wouldn't, but then again I don't run this country. I've been to a lot of countries in Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa and never have I seen such a scizism like this. If land claims haven't been settled by now, to me, that's just plain tough. Somebody wasn't doing their homework or didn't work hard enough to get it sorted in a REASONABLE period of time. In my mind, those claims are TIME EXPIRED. Move on and do like the rest of us Canadians and get on with your lives and stop trying to squeek something out of the government again.

it just seems to me that natives were forced on to these reservations without much of a choice back then,i hope more of us can open our eyes and our minds and learn from each other.
I agree 100%. Open yur eyes to the reality of the situation and not through rose coloured glasses. It appears we have totally different views on the subject and that's OK. That being said, I'll let you pay my portion of taxes that support those initiatives that compensates them for every purchase made for every service they recieve on our behalf. How long do we continue to pay for the percieved actions of others over 100 years ago? When does the statute of limitations kick in? I believe you would sing a different tune if you were to absorb the cost of these claims, benefits and initiatives. It all comes out of the big pot in the long run. The money that will keep you comfortable when Canada Pension kicks in, when your hospital costs soar when you get older..... the list goes on.
Perhaps a trip to BC is in order for you to truly grasp some of the wealth the Aboriginal communities really have. The lands they have and control. Oh ya that's right, they don't have to abide by National or Provincial fishing regulations, how about hunting regulations (Federal/Provincial), how about logging and clear cutting restrictions and regulations - nope, don't have to abide by those either.
Wake up man, they are a priviledged peoples that really don't know when enough is enough. No bias or prejudice here at all...... simple truth and economics. And isn't the truth of the matter from the openning post of another situation where the public is held hostage to draw attention to a percieved wrong that's perhaps treaty related. You try to pull the same stunt for something you believe in and you can bet your *ss you'll be behind bars in no time at all.
How can some people be so naive.

well let's think back in time now,who was originally on this land before the white man came?i think they have every right to do what they are doing.after all it was their's before we took it over and drove them onto the reservations.
Sorry, I have to dissagree completely. I look at it this way, and it may seem callous BUT, they lost we won and they've been getting compensated ever since. When is it going to stop. Do you think any of these sort of "compensations" have been or are still going on in Europe and eastern bloc countries for countries that simply got annexed, took over, assumed control or whatever you want to call it. I think not. Lets not forget that I believe all First Nations / Aborignals / Indigenious Peoples have complete to every Federal and Provincial perk and benefit that the rest of us have. Add to that, they are granted special status for a multitude of reasons that also garnish significant financial benefits that you and I aren't able to and will never be able to acquire.
Wait now, here comes a new claim, lets through some more money at it ...... passify, and cross our fingers that it will go away. If not, repeat process.
For pete's sake, enough is enough. If you look into some of the most productive entrepreneurs and businesses on the rise, you'll see it's from these Peoples. Why, again it's because of the extra perks afforded to them that's not available to the rest of the population.
It's a problem that will never go away and will never be solved by throwing more money at it. Two different mindsets that are the driving force behind these initiatives and again, that's a whole complete topic onto itself.
Bottom line, they lost, we won, suck it up buttercup and get on with it. If you want to live in the lifstyle of the rest of Canada with all that it offers than pay the same price as the rest of the population. Can't sit on the fence having it both ways and be a special Peoples one day than a Canadian the next. Make a decision like my parents had to do when they came over on the boat from Europe 54 years ago, lose your allegiance to the old and become part of the Canadian population. Enjoy and indulge in the history and culture of your past but not at the expense of the rest of the population.
And please don't read more into this than what's there. I have no mallice or angst towards any ethnic Peoples whatsoever. In fact, I rellish in the opportunities to experiance these vast and various peoples and have experienced them first hand in Europe, eastern Europe, the Middle East and South America.
It's the midset and and actions of a very few that create these times of tension, drama and downright archiac measures when there is something they want or believe they have entitilement to, nothing more.
