Is collecting Naked pictures of Women considered disease
Posted: 11/18/2009 10:04:36 PM

My Ex sister-in-Law who still a good friend with me was snooping on my computer
why was she snooping around in YOUR computer? Did she have your permission to do so? If not, she's got a lot of nerve saying you have problems, when she seems to have some boundary issues.
Men are -as I understand it- hard-wired to want to look at other women, as it is (genetically) in our best interest to have sex with as many women as possible, in the effort to propagate our own DNA, while women -due to the fact that they can only reproduce every year or so- are programmed to do the opposite: they tend to be picky and more monogamous in their desires. This is why the majority of porn is geared towards men, while the majority of romance novels -even the raciest ones- are written to attract women.
This has nothing to do with how anyone would act in a relationship; after all, our minds are more powerful than our hormones. All that being said, what turns you on is what turns you on, period. Now, if you had all these pictures and acted on them -i.e, not being able to be faithful to one woman- then you might want to see a doctor.

Falcons at *Giants: The Geliants are a bit too talented to lose their fifth in a row

Bills at *Jaguars: new coach and QB still won't foot the Bills...

Colts at *Ravens: as good as Indy is doing this year, they gotta drop at least one.

Seahawks at *Vikings: Battle between Mr. B. Lorenzo favre and his former backup, one M. Hasselbeck, we see why one was the starter...actually, we just see that the poor Seahawks ain't all that good.

Browns at *Lions: who wins? Lions. Who loses? The Viewers.

Redskins at *Cowboys: 'Boys look to get back on track after the Lameness at Lambeau.

*49ers at Packers: Mike Singletary has the 'Niners playing very physical; and remember, he WAS a Chicago Bear...

*Bengals at Steelers: Gimme a sec...tails? Okay, Bengals.

*Saints at Rams: Saints stay perfect

Jaguars at *Jets: I like the Jets to right the ship this week, but it should be close...might be a damn exciting game, actually

*Chiefs at Raiders: Despite the current ineptitude of these two, this is the most vicious, hateful rivalry of the old AFL.

Seahawks at *Cardinals: this year, the Cards are actually better on the road, but I think they'll eke out the home win.

*Cowboys at Packers: after their loss to the previously winless Buccaneers, the Pack had a lot of questions to answer...this week, the only answer they'll discover is: "WE STINK!"

*Eagles at Chargers: Mike Vick is starting to complain, but the Eagles are hot right now, and despite their identical records, Philly is (statistically) the stronger team.

Sunday night; Patriots at *Colts: this may be the last legitimate chance for someone to beat the Colts this season, but Indy is firing on all cylinders right now...definitely worth staying up late for...

Monday night; *Ravens at Browns: ...you can make up for the late Sunday by going to bed early on Monday...nothing to see here folks; move along...

Head Coaching Changes in NFL
Posted: 10/19/2009 9:19:07 PM

So it looks like Zorn and Jauron are goners this season. The Raiders are on shaky ground as always.
I feel bad for Jimmy Z, but I did grow up out in the Pacific NW watching him QB what many people felt was the most exciting team in the NFL back then...he may save his job until the end of the season with a win over the Eagles, but if not, look for him to be replaced by Sherm Lewis during the bye week. Jauron, well, I've never felt he was all that as a head coach; he had ONE good season coaching the Bears...I don't know who the Bills have as assistants; they can't be too bright in the front office, as they did bring TO into a fragile situation. I look for a complete shakedown at the end of the year.

I think Dan Snyder really wants Cowher, but Cowher is waiting for the Panthers job. Otherwise I predict Snyder will hire Shanahan or Holmgren.
Dan Snyder can want whoever he wants to want(wait, what?), but he's considered to be cut from the same cloth as Jerry Jones and Al Davis-meaning that coaches with a proven pedigree such as Shanahan or Holmgren aren't likely to consider working for him.

I think Holmgren wants to live near San Fran, but Al Davis will never pay out for a top head coach.
It's more that Kathy Holmgren wants to live in the Bay Area; one possibility exists that Mike would consider a return to Green Bay to take the job as GM-just waiting for current GM Ted Thompson to finally get the axe. Holmgren has stated that he would definitely be interested in un-retiring to become a General Manager...and I agree that Al Davis wouldn't pay the kind of scratch needed to get Mike to join the Raiders, but I seriously doubt that Holmgren would work for Al Davis, for any amount of money-and I also believe that Davis wouldn't really want Holmgren, because he wouldn't be enough of a toady.

I think a lot of teams are trying to move to LA - like Jacksonville, TB, Buffalo, SD, Oakland so it will be interesting if any of these owners tank their teams just as an excuse to leave town.
The NFL doesn't work that way; considering that the JAgs and the Bucs squeezed their metro areas for tax dollars to be there in the first place, there'd be an absolute assload of lawsuits for either of these two teams to even consider it.
The NFL spent a lot of time and money to force the Raiders to stay in Oakland; they wouldn't even be considered as a relocation possibility until Al Davis is no longer -at any level- an owner of the team, perhaps he would actually have to be dead...after that, there will be pressure on the East Bay powers that be to build a new home for the team; a likely outcome is that the Raiders and the 49ers will get to share a new facility, perhaps in San Jose?
San Diego is the strongest possibility, but only if LA breaks ground on a new stadium; both the LA Coliseum and the Rose Bowl, while seating more than Qualcomm, don't have luxury suites -and LA fans are notoriously fickle.
The Bills are the most likely candidate for a move, but don't look first to LA; look to San Antonio: the Alamodome is ready and waiting, and San Antonio is the largest metro area -outside of LA- without a representative in the NFL; and until recently, didn't even have a D-1 college football team (UT-SA recently moved up to D-1)...when it comes to Los Angeles, what the owners really want is an expansion team-the owners get to split the expansion fee.
Dungy will stay retired; he's involved in his ministering thing...I'd love to see him return to coaching at some central Florida high school; his ability to teach the game to players -as well as his ability to mentor them- would do a lot of young men a lot of good at that level.
I see Shanahan waiting for an opportunity in either San Diego or Kansas City-while the Chiefs job isn't ideal, it would get him home to Denver one extra week per year, as would the Chargers position...having once coached for Al Davis, he'd never consider working for Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones.
The owner of the Titans has given Jeff Fisher a vote of confidence, so that means -obviously- that he'll be fired at the end of the season.
If the Packers don't make the playoffs this year, Mike McCarthy could be in trouble-mostly because Ted Thompson will want to cover his own ass. Don't look for any of the better known coaches previously mentioned, though.

Are the U.S. public schools really that bad?
Posted: 10/18/2009 9:32:17 PM

Show me a "FIFTH Grader" that can take a COMPLEX situation and retain all the information thrown at them.
Kids can handle a lot more than you want to give them credit for-or maybe I'm just used to the intelligence that my own children have, and use.

All the kids on my block at the fifth grade level, (even the smart ones), have more important things to worry about than vast amount of information about ONE BLIP in time.
Other than feeling incredibly uneasy about how you know so much about "all the kids on [your] block," what exactly do all these kids have to do that is more important than learning?

Do they REALLY need to know if Christopher Columbus was mean? If he treated people bad? Plus anything else that he may or may not have done!
As I mentioned -and a little bit of actual research would confirm, if you'd bother to attempt it- Columbus WAS a complex human being, with both positive and negative attributes.
To answer your question more directly, if kids need to know anything about Columbus, they need to know the truth-not some fictionalized account or ancient myth.

They never mentioned the ages of the students. Do kids of ANY AGE need to have this practice applied in school?????
If the exercise- and doing something ONCE does not constitute a "practice"- was well-monitored by educators, and thoroughly discussed afterwards, I think it could be a good learning tool; a little empathy can go a long way.

The TRUTH is in the MATHS. You can not create an invalid formula and call it true. The numbers will not add up. THAT is EXACTLY what they are teaching! Invalid formulas!
I thought your earlier post was about something specific: you outrage at a non-idolizing view of Columbus. What are the invalid formulas that "they" are teaching?
That aside, one cannot view History/Social Studies as something formulaic; there are many sides to any given situation, and our children deserve to know all of them, if they are to learn any of them.

Today's truth with be tomorrows MYTH! As we see more and more "truths" are found every day. BUT more and more MYTHS are created every day. ALL in the name of multiculturalism. Political Correctness. AND JOHN 8:32??? Do you realize that many people would fault you for quoting the Bible?
Again, what is your problem with "multiculturalism?" What is wrong with encouraging kids to be respectful of people that are different than they are? They don't have to agree with other cultures, just respect their right to be different.
Which "myths" are being created that you find so heinous?
As far as anybody "faulting" me, I gave up caring about what "many people" think of me a long time ago; I'm my own man, and I make no apologies for who I am and what I believe.

Here you take MY words out of context. I said "HATE THEIR OWN HERITAGE."
Hate is hate. When is hate not hate?

The HERITAGE by the context of the structure above concludes that I was talking about their AMERICAN HERITAGE! By your going on about Jefferson was appropriate about the American heritage but what the heck are you spouting off about interracial families? IT DOES show that when certain topics arise that people will move from what Jefferson did for the country and OVERSHADOW his accomplishments by his affair! And YOU brought it up!!!!!!
My "going on" about Jefferson was done in analogy; I explained how in the original posting. Yes, I brought it up; I was trying to make the point that knowing that Jefferson was -gasp!- an imperfect human being with faults and defects does not diminish what he accomplished - just as knowing that Columbus was -gasp!- also an imperfect human being with faults and defects does not diminish what he, too, accomplished.

BUT if they wish to teach the truth then also include the information on a global scale and teach FACTS.
Well, the FACTS are that Columbus wasn't an angel; this is confirmed by entries in his own journals, as well as in other documentation.

Really? What about just plain Patriotism? To be proud that they are born in a country where so many good things go on. Where people from all over the world wish to be! Where OVER 1 MILLION people per year come to live from ALL OVER the WORLD!
So, in one breath, you rail against the creeping evil of "multiculturalism," yet in the next, you seek to exalt the greatness of America by showing that people come "from all over the world!" Which tends to make this country rather...multicultural, it would seem; the big disconnect between you and I is that I teach my kids -and yes, I (and their mother) are the ones that get to teach them such values as acceptance and tolerance- that yes, many people come here from all over the world, and when they bring some of their culture with them from their old home, it makes America stronger and better.

And I see you are JUST as controlling as many parents are today.... "You will not let them."
Thank you for pointing this out to me; I really think I should have said -and need to make sure I state it as such in the future- "I would not teach them..." or "I would not encourage them..."

But really man.. If you have kids I hope the best for them!
I'd thank you for that, but I really don't believe you; frankly -given your shrill rhetoric- I think you'd actually take a perverse delight in the knowledge of my children being considered "failures" by whatever standards you hold to...but given that any standards you have about what makes a child successful or a failure are held by someone -yourself- that actually has no children, I have to believe that you'll consider them failures just to validate your own paranoia.

my car has been keyed 3 times by a neighbor

I know I'm going to sound trite and/or dismissive, but this is all that I know works the closest to 100% of the time when living in a communal parking situation/rough neighborhood: drive something that looks like a pile of crap. I know, I know, but really: look through the want-ads for a low mileage, older car -preferably a boring one that spent a lot of it's life in a old person's garage- and sell the nicer-looking one you have now. They won't resort to damaging the body if it looks like it just doesn't matter.
Other than that: move. Again, OP, I wish that I could tell you something more useful, but I've learned in my life -especially from being a parent- is the phrase "pick your battles carefully" really is accurate...people like your neighbors are peckerheads, and they continue in their behaviors because they know that they'll likely be able to get away with it. Please try to take some heart in the knowledge that people like that get their payback in the fact that the "victorious" moments in their lives are the pathetic little acts of destructiveness that they perpetrate on others...what crappy memories to have in one's old age, or on one's deathbed...

Are the U.S. public schools really that bad?
Posted: 10/12/2009 12:49:27 PM

Here We GO!! Just in time for a nice thread....
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091011/ap_on_re_us/us_teaching_columbus

So, this might validate the below Quote even more by a previous post???

Public schools need to stick to curriculum and not push the homosexual agenda.
So, the idea of portraying Columbus as an imperfect human being -like the rest of us- with very real faults, prejudices based upon the ignorance of the age he lived in, and errors in judgement -like basically every human being that ever lived, anywhere- is somehow pushing the "Homosexual Agenda?" Very, very interesting connection -or disconnection...

Lets get back to believing in our country and not putting it down.
Given that Columbus never actually landed in any part of the Unites States -unless you want to count the three days he stopped in Puerto Rico- I'd be interested to know how portraying Columbus as something less than some mythical "superman" is somehow denegrating to the United States.
Not to mention, Columbus wasn't even the first European to land in America: the Norse had a settlement in Newfoundland almost a half of a millenium prior to Columbus "discovering" what he thought was India.

Filling kids with hate is basically what they are doing
No, they're trying to present a more balanced view of a complex historical figure; any "hate" would come from the people that are responsible for a child's moral training: their parents.
Another good example is presenting the evidence that Jefferson had an affair -and children- with his slave Sally Hemings. Does that mean that Jefferson's accomplishments are diminished? Does knowing that information mean that kids are taught to "hate?" Only if -IMHO- one believes that interracial families are somehow a bad thing-and kids won't learn that in schools; they will -and do- learn it from their families.

It undermines the values and morals of this country.
Which "values and morals" are undermined? Is giving our kids information and letting them use their critical thinking skills to make their own judgments "Anti-American?" Why should anyone fear, hate, or denegrate the facts?
"The truth shall make you free"--John 8:32
"A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true, for if the things be false, the apprehension of them is not understanding."
--Isaac Newton

Why not say that many of the extinct animals from 400 million years ago was all because some neanderthal man stepped on a butterfly!
Because the first -alternative views of Columbus- are based in fact, including some of his own writings; while the second -about extinction- is simply something that you -in your rage and fear- simply made up.

Stupid statement yes
Finally, something we agree on...

But it goes to show that education is not about teaching children good anymore.
Education isn't supposed to be about teaching children "good;" it's about teaching children facts, and helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Teaching "good" -i.e., morals- is the sole responsibility of the family.

Down with PC. Politically Correctness = Communist thinking.
Well, if this is the same "Political Correctness" (and you don't have to thank me for showing the correct way to phrase that) that says that we shouldn't use words like Kike, Rag-Head, Slant-Eye, Chink, Gook, Spic, Coon, Tar-Baby, Half-Breed, Injun, Honky, Wop, Polack, Mick, Dyke, Faggot, Broad, Retard, etc to describe our fellow human beings -and I suspect that, given your hostility, it is- then I guess somebody may wanna dress me in red and call me "comrade," because I'm damn sure not teaching my kids to use any of those terms, even if they've been used in the past; just as I wouldn't let them engage in hero worship in the name of patriotism.

Football: Should I be mad
Posted: 10/12/2009 11:36:41 AM

Steveemac, right, when ever there is a interconference game and the local CBS afflilate has the choice which game to air, they choose the Bills. They always do no matter what the teams records, who is in contention for playoffs etc.
Well, they may not actually "choose" to; I tried to find your town on the map, but couldn't, so I'll assume that you're in a part of the Empire State that is considered part of the Bills home territory-likely, in those cases, the network (CBS) probably dictates that they must carry the Bills. You're not the only one to feel slighted by this: many times, over the years, fans would be watching an exciting, close game that started at 1pm EST (or Noon Central, etc.) that was coming "down to the wire;" only nto have the network cut away to show their local team "in it's entirety." Which is damned annoying; I think I'm safe in saying that a majority of football fans would be willing to give up the first five minutes of their local team to see the outcome of the early game that they've already invested (up to) three hours of their Sunday afternoon in - especially if it's that close...but the networks have stringent rules, as there's huge money involved: this year, the four networks have paid the NFL 2.4 billion for the rights to cover the games; and the NFL is the only professional sport that has more than two of the networks covering it. As they say, money talks...

Football: Should I be mad
Posted: 10/12/2009 12:56:42 AM

Once again the local CBS channel decided to play the Bufflo Bills game rather than the New York Giants. When ever the giants play an AFC opponet at home at the same time as a Bills game the local network ALWAYS plays the Bills game.
You need to check with your local FOX affiliate; CBS has a contract to primarily carry AFC games, while FOX carries the NFC. I think -not totally sure- that when there's an inter-conference game, the "away" team is the one that determines which of those two networks cover the game: for example, if the Giants visit Miami, the game should be on FOX; but if the Dolphins visit the Meadowlands to play the Giants, the game should be on CBS.
None of this applies to NBC's Sunday Night package, or ABC/ESPN's Monday Night Football, other than if the local team is playing on Monday Night, then the local ABC affiliate will broadcast the game, so the nineteen people in any given city without cable/satellite/Uverse don't miss the game.

Redskins at Panthers: Hmmm, this one might just be interesting...Panthers close

Steelers at Lions: Is Detroit starting another 18 game losing streak? I dunno, but it won't end today; Steelers

Falcons at 49ers: Candidate for Game Of The Week...Niners

Texans at Cardinals: Another close one; Texans

Patriots at Broncos: I'm gonna take the Broncos in the thin air.

Jaguars at Seahawks: This time, the cats DO get the bird; Jags feast on the road...kill.

Colts at Titans: The Titans gotta win sometime this season, but I no longer have any faith in them to do so against anybody but the weaker teams...Colts should roll.

Jets at Dolphins: Jets get back in the win column in this one.

remembering song lyrics
Posted: 10/8/2009 11:34:28 AM
I think it's simply a matter of repetition and association; it's not dissimilar -IMO- to a professional football player learning all the plays in a playbook that rivals a New York City phone book for thickness...or a bus driver that has to memorize hundreds of routes. The way I always do it is not to look at the entirety of what needs to be memorized, but rather just concentrate on the beginning; I've found that the brain -well, my addled excuse for one, anyway- starts filling in the gaps once I get started; I think that once the musician gets into the song, his/her brain treats the memory of the work's entirety like a ZIP file, opening the knowledge needed to complete his/her task -in this case, the song- as it needs to, instead of letting it "run" constantly, as a whole, in the more conscious areas of the brain...and I believe the ability for the brain to do this comes from practice: it's got to be incredibly rare -like, struck by lightning or winning the lottery rare- for a musician to play a song that s/he has never at least heard before, much less at least practiced; and most musicians -at least ones that are successful enough to be seen playing in front of an audience- practice constantly.
Another way of looking at it: when we were kids, we had to think about how to walk, or ride a bike-now, we can do it without thinking about it. How? Repetition.

Brett Favre wants revenge?...
Posted: 10/7/2009 12:39:44 AM

Keep your eyes on Rodgers as his career progresses. He's going to be amongst the top five QBs here in the next few years.
I had a conversation with my son about this recently: he was of the opinion that Aaron Rodgers could conceivably be a Hall Of Fame QB. I told him "Yeah, he could, but he wont be if he spends his career on a team that has Ted Thompson in charge of bringing in the offensive line." "A-Rodg" could possibly be one of the top five QB's in the NFL in five years-but if he has to keep lining up behind those pitiful excuses for offensive linemen that the Packers keep showing up with, he'll be lucky just to survive the next five years...the only reason he'll still be playing at thirty is because he didn't have to start until he was twenty six.

Yeah, surrre; that's like the schoolyard bully (and his equally cowardly buddies, as they never act alone) cornering some kid named Leslie and taunting him with "Just because you parent's gave you a GIRLS NAME, don't get mad at me!"

Complete disconnect from reality. No where near the same. You choosing to back up political platforms Hitler himself supported has nothing to do with being born with the name "Leslie" and being picked on for it. One is voluntary while the other was involuntary.
Actually, no, not a complete disconnect: much like a baby being given an androgynous name, ones beliefs are formed over long periods of time, based on many external factors, including -but not limited to- family upbringing, regional biases and social mores, and life experiences. Much like the schoolyard bullies -and Church Inquisitors of old-, you expect me -and everyone else- to research vague connections to various historical figures, or else be branded a modern heretic, worthy of the scorn, derision, and any other "fitting punishment" of True Believers such as yourself.

Do you know the difference between what Hitler believed about child labor and what current conservatives believe about it? It has everything to do with parenting. Who's the parent here? The actual parents or the government? Who should be allowed to give their kids authority to work? The mom and dad or the state?
If you had bothered to read my post in Message #22 of this thread, you would already know what I believe about children working. I don't think the government should say whether children should work or not, but I DO think they should set ground rules so that said children don't get taken advantage of. That's why schoolkids can't work more than certain amounts of hours on school nights, for example: because we, as a society, believe that children have more important tasks to accomplish: learning; from family and at school. Many schoolkids will allow themselves to be taken advantage of: many will work extra hours if given the chance, as the temptation of extra spending money is too great to pass up...I remember this from my days working as a fast food manager; many teens would volunteer to "stay longer," to help cover a shift, but I would send them home as it was after 9pm or they had already worked four hours that day, or had already worked too many hours that week.
But hey, the law is pretty good about providing out for parents that feel only they should set limits on their minor children in the workplace: start your own business. You can work your own kids pretty silly there, as the law seems to recognize that no responsible caring parent would exploit their own children! See, "Genius," child labor laws are not in place to stop you from making decisions about your own kids; they exist to prevent a disinterested third party from taking advantage of their naivete and immaturity for the sake of their bottom line.
If you can't afford to start your own business, but still want your kids (which you actually don't have) to work without the benefit -or in your apparent view, the "yoke"- of regulations to protect -or in your apparent view, "enslave"- them, there are factories that can oblige you: they're located in Communist China. Oh-oh, You Agree With Red China on Something! I guess -under your rules- that makes you a Communist?

Statists like yourself have no idea what freedom means and how much it would benefit yourself and society.
Oohh, now I'm a "Statist?" Whassamatta, just calling me a "Nazi" isn't cutting it?
And the fact that you even dare to anoint yourself as some sort of Official Tester and brand people as (insert choice of name for "Political Bogeyman" here)'s shows me that you have even less of an idea what freedom means-and what's worse, you use your subterfuge to brand people that you don't agree with-and whats more reprehensible, you couch your own view in the mantra of "Freedom!" Talk about Orwellian...

You wouldn't bring up the minimum wage at all if you knew that historically unemployment has consistently gone up every time the minimum wage goes up.
I didn't bring up the entirety of minimum wage laws; that is a subject for another thread; I merely brought up the Sub-Minimum provisions that apply to children-laws that were historically championed by your right-wing heroes.
And I don't necessarily believe that minimum wage hikes equal hikes in unemployment; nor do I care if it actually does. Now, I know YOU aren't going to read what I'm about to write in it's entirety -that wouldn't be correct NeoCon/Populist procedure; you'll just cherry-pick to make me look like the AntiChrist- but I'm sure that other reasonable people on this thread will, and understand where I'm coming from...but even if nobody does, they're my views, and I apologize to no one for them.
The minimum wage is not primarily about money; it is about human decency and fairness: we -as a society- decide that a human being's labor is worth a certain amount; to pay them less to leave their homes and come to their employers place of business and exert themselves is simply unjust. Of course, wages are more impacted by the free market -as they should be- but we -as a society- have set a legal minimum as to how low the free market can take them. It is much the same as public schooling: if it were only about money, we would do away with school altogether, and make an education the sole responsibility of the individual...but we don't; we -as a society- decided long ago that we -as a society- have an obligation to educate our children. We actually passed the first minimum wage law -in a way- when the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified, which outlawed slavery.

Gee that was a well thought out, creative post.
Unlike your original post which -by your own admission- you copied from "the NAZI party platform, co-written by Adolf Hitler in 1920." What I write are my own words, unless I use the
quote
highlighting box to show that the words were first spoken by someone else -you know, the one you couldn't seem to grasp the ability to use right when quoting me?- and I cite my sources; for an example on how to do this, see my post #22 in this thread.

I'm not a neocon.
No, you just play one on the internet. Or are you one of those folks that tries to hide their knee-jerk reactionary hatred/fear of those whose beliefs/opinions/lifestyle/ethnicity behind an assumed moral superiority couched in some classy-sounding alternative title? There's lot's of them out there, you know: *Patriotic*Libertarian*Taxpaying(as though NeoCons are the only ones that EVER pay taxes)*Pro-Family*Troop-Supporting*Flag-Honoring*

Just because you agree with parts of Hitler's Nazi party platform and didn't even realize it don't get mad at me for it.
Yeah, surrre; that's like the schoolyard bully (and his equally cowardly buddies, as they never act alone) cornering some kid named Leslie and taunting him with "Just because you parent's gave you a GIRLS NAME, don't get mad at me!" Or, an example that is more relevant to me (and my children): Some "Good Christian Children(and their equally cowardly buddies, as they never act alone)" surrounding my son and shouting at him, "You're not a Christian, so you're going to Hell! My Mom and Dad said so!"
And as far as agreeing with parts of Hitler's Nazi platform: Hitler and the Nazi's proposed abolishing child labor, while Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and the NeoCon/Populist 104th Congress -led by Newt Gingrich- believed that children should be allowed to work at less than the minimum wage. While I don't believe that kids shouldn't be allowed to have part-time jobs, I'd rather my kids -and yours, too- don't have part-time after-school/weekend/summertime jobs where they get paid less than the legal minimum that you or I must be paid to do the same work...so yeah, ON THIS ISSUE, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi's policies make more sense to me than those of Reagan, Bush"41", and Gingrich and their GOP's...and I'm not ashamed to admit that -especially given the rhetoric that has been coming from the Far Right- that Hitler and the Nazi's were more in line with what I believe regarding healthcare than Beck, Limbaugh and what's left of the Republican party.
Yeah, I said it.

Oldest woman to give birth dies leaving twin toddlers
Posted: 10/4/2009 12:45:32 AM

This 66 year old woman who got IVF treatments never got married or had the chance to have children. She stayed with her elderly mother until she died at 101. This woman probably went on for years and years dreaming for and wishing for the chance to have a child of her own. It's quite sad, really. However, that doesn't excuse what she did.
I can understand that somewhat, but life is about choices: she chose to stay with her elderly mother, which was a loving and noble thing to do, truly; but she had to have realized, oh, sometime in her forties that time was running out on her becoming a mother. She made an honorable and selfless choice to tend to her mother, but then made some selfish choices in 1) deciding to have babies at 66, and 2) lying to the doctors about her age to be able to do so. She might have considered talking to her brother decades ago; maybe he would have been willing to shoulder some of the workload of caring for their mother, allowing her to pursue starting as family.
There may be different rules in Spain regarding adoption, but here in the US, you can at least become a foster parent in your sixties-my aunt and uncle did.

I, too, agree with those that say this mother was irresponsible; mainly because if she just wanted to be a mother, there are lots of kids that need adopting: and they aren't all babies...and an older parent would be just the ticket for a pre-teen from a dysfunctional family or the foster care system.
What this woman wanted -selfishly, IMHO- was to be pregnant; and I think nature kind of gives women their marching orders on this issue: if the hen ain't layin' any more, it ain't right to bring in eggs from another chicken coop...now, don't everybody jump down my gullet about IVF options; I'm not going to even suggest that an otherwise healthy woman OF CHILDBEARING AGE -let's say thirtyish, just for arguments sake- who can't produce her own ova should be denied a chance to bear a child.
Although, that same thirtyish woman would also make an excellent adoptive parent...

just an idea about affordable healthcare
Posted: 10/3/2009 8:37:02 PM

I am a Canadian living in a major city in Western Canada and I was diagnosed with cancer last year at this time. I have absolutely no complaints about the health care system or the care that I have received throughout my journey. It has been nothing short of stellar.
Tink, are you trying to introduce a first-party testimonial of YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE into an American political discussion? Good Heavens, woman, don't you know the rules and customs down here? That type of behavior just won't do, young lady!

In all seriousness, I hope that your cancer treatment is going well...it's an insidious disease.

What I mean is all these men saying size doesn't matter. How do they know? I am asking...Care to answer?
Well, if everything else were equal, then size would matter, totally: if every guy did it exactly the same, then the only difference would be in the size of the anatomical part doing...it.
But not all guys are the same, are we? While a dude may be endowed like a Clydesdale, if all he does is plod along, maybe he won't win Best In Show; that may go to the Pony that has more imaginative steps...I can only speak from personal experience; while many of the women I've been intimate with have mentioned that this is one of the larger boats they've sailed in, they ALL have been complimentary about my sailing technique!

Ideas for a political platform, that would appeal to many people...
Posted: 10/3/2009 3:40:02 AM

This thread was posted as a test of sorts. I'd like to congratulate the people who spoke against the platform.

Everything I listed in the original post, was straight from the NAZI party platform, co-written by Adolf Hitler in 1920.

Just reading those ideas, if you were an outsider reading the platform, it's clear that these are left wing concepts. You can also tell from those who supported the ideas versus those who opposed them, whether they are left or right leaning.
So, in essence, you're admitting to being a NeoCon/Populist Right-wing troll. What's really telling is that so many of your fellow righties in this thread identified these platform "planks" as being Communistic, which shows that while many people don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to various political systems, they DO know the various names for "The Bogeyman," and are satisfied with throwing out whichever one comes to mind first - it beats independent thinking, right?

And BTW, if you really want to know which way I "lean," just ask-no need to conduct an online Inquisition; I have no need to hide what I believe in.

I totally concur with Ismene: polish up the resume and start looking, now! If this guy is the OWNER and won't collect on delinquent accounts, it's only a matter of time; and at that point, your concerns about his attitude will be moot, as your main concern at that point will be finding another job! Believe me, it's much easier to find another job on your own terms, not in desperation mode.
Just because someone owns a company, doesn't mean they're qualified to run it; but such situations have a habit of working themselves out through "Economic Darwinism," or some other such thing...

Camping tips and recipes
Posted: 10/2/2009 9:42:56 PM
Disclaimer: any camping tips given by Steveemac are generally not applicable to backpackers; all my camping has been at a campground, where I have had my vehicle parked at the site.

*If you ever want to cook over a campfire, you better get some cast-iron cookware, unless you want one bite burnt, the next raw...although, a high quality stainless steel would work as well, but would be a pain in the butt to clean all the soot off of after-and camping shouldn't be unduly stressful; that's what work is for!
*When perking coffee over a fire, wrap the bottom of the coffee pot with some aluminum foil-again, will keep the soot off.
*When drinking the above-mentioned fire-perked coffee, be aware that it will have a temperature approaching that of the interior of Kilauea...the good thing about this is that the cup o' mud you poured at breakfast will still be hot at lunchtime...it will also be strong enough to dissolve concrete (due to the higher temp.) so you may want to adjust the amount of grounds you use.
*Another percolator tip: the Maxwell House filter packs are very handy-when you put it in, simply poke through the filter pack with the percolator spindle. This keeps the grounds from being spread throughout your coffee, and makes the perc basket easier to clean.
*If you like fried potatoes for breakfast, boil or bake them the night before; then in the morning, just slice them up and brown them, possibly with some onions.
*Cut down to two meals per day: We used to have breakfast a little later(who the hell wants to get up early on your day off?), and supper a little earlier-and when we got hungry between times, we kept healthy snacks available, such as fruit, granola, peanut butter, or cold cuts. One less mealtime to have to clean up after, and one less reason to interrupt what we might be doing during the day.
*Plan your meals! It's annoying to come back with a LOT of leftover food-and moreso to have to "go into town" because you ran out! You should come back with a little food-unused snacks, or leftovers that weren't finished; but never uncooked meats or unused milk.
*To keep your food cold: take a plastic gallon jug from milk or juice, wash it thoroughly; then fill it about 2/3 to 3/4 full of water. Freeze it overnight. When you pack your cooler, use this instead of loose ice; it will last longer-and wont leak into the cooler like a block of ice in a plastic bag would. As the ice in your jug melts, pour it out-since it's tap water from home, use it for a nice cold drink(this may be especially useful, as many campgrounds have well water, which can be minerally tasting). Keep a separate cooler for drinks-since people will be getting in and out of it more often, this will keep your food cooler cold longer.
*To keep your kids hydrated, bring along a plastic pitcher to make juice from concentrate, or Kool-aid; many kids don't care for the taste of the above mentioned well water, and will avoid drinking it...this can lead to all sorts of problems, especially in the heart of Summer.
*Do NOT use gasoline to start a campfire-there's the flash fire danger, but also because it's an exercise in futility: gasoline will often burn off before it ignites the wood. Charcoal lighter fluid works much better...I know, I know, kindling, newspaper, etc. but I don't like bringing things that have only one use; I need the charcoal lighter for when I light the grill anyway.
*If you use disposable plates, use uncoated paper: they can be burned. Please do not burn plastic, styrofoam, or any other garbage: it releases toxins into the air, it stinks to high heaven, and it never burns off completely, leaving the fire pit full of crap for the next camper.

Guns a right but healthcare a privelage?
Posted: 10/2/2009 1:44:26 PM

do you really think the present system is working? have any of you people against doing something looked at where this will be in ten years? twenty years?
The Far Right is most assuredly NOT in the habit of contrasting their beliefs with future consequences of their actions...case in point: during the last administration -which had both the executive and legislative branches controlled by the GOP for six of those eight years- involved us in not one but two wars while simultaneously calling for a tax cut.
Now, this is not to debate whether or not we should/shouldn't have gotten involved in those conflicts (IMO: Afghanistan, yes; Iraq, no), but to point out the fact that the right-wing leadership proposed to do so while cutting off the main thing that any military action consumes mass quantities of: money. At the very least, one would think the NeoCon/Populist leadership would have left the tax rates where they were; but no-they left the bill for their children and grandchildren to try to make good on.
As with the current argument over HealthCarePayment reform; they fail -or refuse- to even consider what the status quo will mean for this country, as that would involve considering a reality that will take place at a later date. The Far Right basically only thinks about the present -and wraps themselves in the past to justify it's mortgaging of our nation's future.

President Obama wants to extend school hours for our kids
Posted: 10/2/2009 12:46:02 PM
To luiza, above, and all the other that have lauded my post earlier in this thread: thank you. It came from my heart.

Yesterday, I attended my son's high school for conferences. The teachers are set up in the gym, at tables; you get a list of your child's teachers, and then get in line to see them at their stations-1st come, 1st served. You know, I was there for almost two hours, and I still didn't get to see all of his teachers? And I was grateful of that fact; because there were SO MANY PARENTS THERE, the lines were long! And BTW, his school -Rufus King- has been the top-ranked public school in Wisconsin every year since 2005; nationally ranked # 213, 323, 271, and 214. This is not some hoity-toity suburban school, either; it's in the heart of Milwaukee; and was built in the Great Depression, opening in 1934. My father, uncle, and aunt are all graduates of this same school.
Anybody that tries to pin the lackluster overall achievement of America's public schools on teachers needs to check out Rufus King and/or Craig Montessori (where my son attended K3 through 8th grade) here in Milwaukee: you'll find that it is very possible to get a quality education at a public (taxpayer funded-Ooh! Socialism!) school.
And this is in the city that was the first to have the farce of Vouchers thrust upon it.

New Timing belt

OP, I would definitely recommend doing the water pump with the timing belt; you have to go in there anyway, as the saying goes...and if that pump fails soon down the road, you're going to have to pay for >>all<< the labor to replace it; many shops won't "double dip" you on labor charges if you do both at once-if they do, find a more customer-satisfaction/retention oriented mechanic, especially in this economy!

2009/10 NFL Weekly Predictions
Posted: 10/2/2009 11:09:52 AM
week four:

Ravens at Patriots: The Pats should win this; if they don't, their season is on the line at the 1/4 point.

Lions at Bears: The Lions win for the first time last week since 2007; Motor City celebrates like there's no next Sunday-which there won't be: Bears prevail.

Bengals at Browns: What can "Brown" do for themselves? Not much...Bengals roll.

Seahawks at Colts: The only chance Seattle has is to wear those butt-fugly uniforms from last week; maybe Peyton will get so sick he can't play...who are we kidding? The Colts will win even if (former Wisconsin Badger) Jim Sorgi gets the start.

Giants at Chiefs: The Chiefs have an excellent chance here...to go 0-4. Giants huge; unless you're a fan of New York, don't bother to record this one for later viewing; there's gotta be something better on the Home Shopping Network...

Titans at Jaguars: Tennessee has to be the best winless team in the NFL this year; I think they get off the donut this week.

Buccaneers at Redskins: Jimmy Z and the "Skins get back to .500 against the porous pewter defense.

Raiders at Texans: The only Raiders that will win this weekend are the youth-league ones that I coach here in Brew City; Texans will BBQ the apparently senile Al Davis "professional" version.

Jets at Saints: Now THIS one is worth having your smart neighbor kid program the DVR for! I like the Saints in a close, high scoring one.

Bills at Dolphins: While I do think that Miami is the better team overall, I feel that their having to start 2d year QB Chad Henne will cause them to narrowly miss beating up on the struggling Bills. Buffalo close.

Cowboys at Broncos: Denver gets revenge for their loss in Super Bowl XII

Rams at 49ers: My beloved grandmothers -God rest their souls- could both tell you that the Niners will win big this week. St. Louis, enjoy the success of your Cards; it's gonna be a long Autumn for the Lambs...

Chargers at Steelers (Sunday night): This could be interesting: two teams that -so far this season- are struggling to get into their "groove." I gotta take the Steelers; home field should be the difference.

Packers at Vikings (Monday night): OH...MY...GOD!! The off-the-field buildup to this has been going on since last year. While the Packers are young and ready, Favre is hot, and Adrian Peterson is considered to be the best player in the NFL. The Vikes will win, and Favre will be come the first QB to beat all 32 NFL teams in his career.

Ideas for a political platform, that would appeal to many people...
Posted: 10/1/2009 12:59:05 AM
I'll take them one at a time:

-Nationalization of healthcare
I'm for this; although I rather prefer that the government merely takes over the payment of healthcare, as in Canada, versus the gov't running all aspects of it, as in the UK.
-Expanded all age insurance
What kind of insurance are you talking about here? If it's the issue of Health insurance, I covered that above.
-Guaranteed jobs for everyone
This isn't totally impossible; in France, they periodically adjust the threshold for when overtime kicks in, based on the number of workers vs. jobs...but France isn't known for being terribly innovative, either, when it comes to technology or industry; they do okay, I guess. I would prefer that we try what was done during the Great Depression: hire the out-of-work at minimum wage to do low-skill work; back then, it wasn't looked at as being a permanent position, but rather a more dignified way of collecting assistance; for example, the lagoon in Jackson Park here in Milwaukee was pretty much dug out by hand in the 30's-it would have been faster to use a steam-shovel and bulldozer, but there were folks out of work.
-Prohibition of child labor
I wouldn't want to completely prohibit child labor, but it needs to be well-regulated(which it already is) and well-monitored(which it generally isn't, depending on who's in power)
-The abolition of incomes unearned by work (making money off of finance)
To remove the profit motive from anything takes away a great motivator for someone to excel, rather than just doing enough not to get fired. Again, regulation and monitoring is what's needed here.
-Government takeover of department stores
I am no Libertarian-I do believe that government has it's place-but this just seems silly; especially since one of the most successful chains in the US is Kohls, which is based here in Greater Milwaukee.
-Nationalization of all corporations and trusts
Again, why? These issues only come up when it has been obvious that private businesses have been irresponsible or unlawful; and these times usually are due to long periods of "laissez-faire" governance. Regulation and monitoring , regulation and monitoring...
-Profit sharing in all major industries
I am in favor of profit-sharing in all for-profit businesses, large or small:

The owners of properties, mines and factories, should share their incomes with their employees, and give a fairly certain percentage of their profits to their workingmen, in order that the employees should receive, besides their wages, some of the general income of the factory, so that the employee may strive with his soul in the work. --‘Abdu’l-Bahá; Dublin, New Hampshire, 1912

NCAA Football Season 2009

thats crazy, u would give a conf. with just 7 teams a bcs bid?
The Big East only has 8 football schools, and they get an automatic bid...if I were emperor for a day, I'd align all the D-1 schools into 7 conferences of about 16 teams each, then use the BCS New Years Bowls as the "Elite Eight" for a playoff system: 7 conf. winners plus one "at large" or something like that...

It was a small hardcover book by the Jehovah's Witnesses called "Mankind's Search For God," which was a comparative look at all the major (and mid-major) religions of the world. While I'm sure the JW church wasn't trying to do this, it was the two pages on the Baha'i Faith that led me to learn more about it, and eventually declare myself as a Baha'i. It's pretty ironic -although any Witnesses that come to my door don't see the humor in it when I thank them for helping me find my path!

President Obama wants to extend school hours for our kids
Posted: 9/28/2009 1:30:32 PM

I agree the American education system isn't working.
Many people believe this, because that is what the sensationalist media likes to spew forth. As the son of a public-school teacher -and the nephew of a retired public-school teacher- I can tell you that 1) Yes, there are many crappy teachers, administrators, and other public-school employees in the school systems; but there are far more that are genuinely trying to do their jobs well, and 2) It is not the failing of the American education system that is the biggest problem, it is the failing of the AMERICAN PARENTING SYSTEM!! When it is time for parent-teacher conferences and there is a 95% no-show rate by the parents, there's something effed-up there-and there's very little that the teachers can do to counteract that. If kids believe that their parents don't give a rat's sphincter about what/how they're doing in school, why should those kids?
My aunt always used to -and still does, actually- joke that they should give a competency test to new parents: if they are too uneducated/self-centered/ignorant to get out of their own way, they shouldn't be able to take the kid home from the hospital...heck, you can't adopt a kid if you're unfit; why can you make one from scratch? It's these unfit parents that are the ones that send their kids to school with a bag of Chee-tos as "lunch," don't show up for conferences -or much else where a parent's presence would do a lot of good, don't make their children getting enough sleep a priority...I could go on and on.

Kirk Cameron compares Charles Darwin to Hitler!
Posted: 9/24/2009 11:03:13 AM

Does anyone really need any proof that religion is dangerous?
Actually, I do, OP, as your given example is not necessarily proof that ALL religion is dangerous, but rather that one given interpretation of a particular religion (Judeo/Christianity-so actually two, as most creationists get their "proofs" from the Old Testament) is overly influential on a particular celebrity that is open to that given interpretation's overly literal suggestion.
Now, one religion -the Baha'i Faith, to which I belong- would also tell Kirk Cameron that he's wrong:

"The third principle or teaching of Bahá’u’lláh is the oneness of religion and science. Any religious belief which is not conformable with scientific proof and investigation is superstition, for true science is reason and reality, and religion is essentially reality and pure reason; therefore, the two must correspond. Religious teaching which is at variance with science and reason is human invention and imagination unworthy of acceptance, for the antithesis and opposite of knowledge is superstition born of the ignorance of man. If we say religion is opposed to science, we lack knowledge of either true science or true religion, for both are founded upon the premises and conclusions of reason, and both must bear its test. " --‘Abdu’l-Bahá; The Promulgation of Universal Peace: p107, TALK ‘ABDU’L-BAHÁ DELIVERED IN PITTSBURGH, 7 May 1912/Talk at Hotel Schenley, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

If Kirk Cameron actually approached this with an open mind, and did his "due diligence" on the subject, he would find that not only is Charles Darwin right, but to follow the writings of the Bible in a completely literal way put him not in harmony with the knowledge of God, but rather in opposition to it...however, he uses a rather polarizing method of trying to sway others to his beliefs, in essence trying to scare or shame them by comparing Darwin -a man of science who actually didn't want his findings published until after his death because he was afraid of the disruption they would cause- to Hitler, a mentally unstable man with far too much power at his disposal that considered certain members of various religious and ethnic groups to be worthy or extermination. In doing so, he is being inflammatory instead of reasonable; he is trying to shame people into believing as he does - which, sad to say, OP, you appear to be doing as well.

Older people only pls

To the OP: Sex is like anything else in life that takes effort-it requires practice. Actually, it's a lot like camping: many people buy a cheap tent and sleeping bags, throw together some other odds-n-ends, and "go camping," then wonder why they had such a lousy time...while other people that enjoy camping learn from past experiences, and work to improve future ones...and no, it's not as "clinical" as it sounds...

If you think flying is bad now, you'll love this!

I guess you missed the part where this solution is designed for short shuttle flights and not trans-atlantic or cross country...
This being the case, I -for one- hope that this catches on in North America...because then, more people will opt for TAKING THE BUS!!

And Steveemac will reap the rewards of more demand for the services he provides!

End of Clunkers has Predictable Result
Posted: 9/23/2009 7:58:34 AM

The government is slow on paying for the first time home buyers program as well. I recently bought a house (put my own money down) and heard that the rebate usually comes back in 4-6 weeks.
Is there some other program out there that actually gives you a "rebate" for buying a house? Because if you are talking about The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, that credit is claimed on your 2009 federal income tax return.
