Best small towns in USA
Posted:

I nominate for consideration, Lawrence,KS (UofKS). A fabulous eclectic town with a vast cool variety of individuals, shops, and eateries. It has carefully preserved historic houses and the original downtown, which is buzzing even at 3PM Sunday afternoon. A city boy, I was not entirely sold on rural living; I soon changed my mind. When I first bought my property in the area, I had a big draft horse go down- a call to one person for help resulted in an army of over 20 people and equipment showing up; most of which I had never laid eyes on. One of these unknown individuals had the only rig in the area big enough to haul a Clydesdale- he transported the horse 3 hrs to K-State and would not take a penny for fuel. "I know how it feels to have one of these big 'ol boys sick." He drawled, "I'm glad ta be able ta hep ya out a little."
Something in our national character is vanishing as our small towns and their rich heritage fades away.....

The film "Ghost and Darkness" Has a wonderful soundtrack. I have a selection from it on my profile. Val Kilmer at his best. The soundtrack features the Worldbeaters, The Johannesburg Choir, Ladysmith Black Mombaza, Soweto Gospel Choir and others. All of these groups have individual releases and clips on YT.
I agree with above, Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder are terrific! If you are a Ry Cooder fan, his documentary with his son Joachim, "The Buena Vista Social Club " is not to be missed !

sirius or xm sat radio

Sirius/XM just announced today a reverse stock split has been approved to avoid delisting from NASDAQ. XM was a solvent company prior to the merger; why they agreed to take on the absurd debt Sirius was carrying due to rediculous contracts with talking heads , ie: Stern, et. al, has baffled many market analysts. The usual reverse split is 1for 2 or 3 shares. This split ranges from 1 for 10, to 1 for 50! This will be interesting to watch since a reverse split of this desperate magnitude usually signals a frantic code blue, get the organ harvesters ready, call on behalf of a very sick company......

Edgar Degas "Waiting" and "Monsieur Perrot's Dance Class"
The first proving that even in the 18oo's there were anxious stage parents, and the second, a classic portrayal of knowledge being passed to the next generation.
As an additional note, there is a fabulous little known film, "The Train" 1965 B&W with Burt Lancaster. Depicts the true story of the French resistance efforts to keep the train loaded with priceless art from the French museums from getting back into Germany. For art and film lovers alike- it is well worth the effort to find it !

I have a universal axiom about bad films- any film promoted by an airhead celeb with a clip on the talk show circuit has a high probability of being mentally toxic. I doubt that Ben Cross made the rounds of the talkies with a clip of Chariots of Fire......

For ABBA fans

In view of the resurgence of ABBA's popularity, satellite radio has devoted a new channel to their music. ( ABBA Radio #31). Just an FYI for ABBA fans- pardons if this has been posted previously!
In the course of a recent cross country trip I heard them perform in Swedish, English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. I have been a long time fan of their music, but hearing them perform flawlessly in 6 languages sent my admiration to a new level! The French version of "Voulez Vous" is a killer !

Michael Phelps' won by 100th of a second.....

I was an up and coming swimmer during the general Spitz era, and went on to coach women's swimming for several years. I was doing times in the 400IM at that time that made me a national contender. Those times today would not have qualified me to go to Omaha this year for the Olympic trials in the WOMENS 400 IM. My womens team were national champions one year. NONE of their times would have made the Olympic trials this year.
Training in swimming has evolved exponentially since 1972. Pool training has changed, dry land and gym training was practically non-existant, nutrition was not really a factor, BMI measurements, power to weight calculations, water surface displacement, etc, etc, etc. Compared to all of these factors, the difference made by suits and caps is a bug on the windshield. Parents in our program thought their baby girls had fallen into the hands of a madman when I bought a rowing shell for training, pulled boats loaded with their team mates, spent hours in the gym with weights, rope climbing, and tug O war, and made them list everything they ate. These things were unheard of for swimmers at that time. Today our program would be a warm up.
Cap and suit aside; If my Nemesis MarkSpitz, had the advantage of years of todays state of the art training, I have no doubt that he would be just as amazing as he was in his prime. Who then would be the better today; Spitz or Phelps? That could be debated forever, much like comparing Secretariat and Man O War or Phar Lap. Great champions at their respective point in history, deserving of all the awards and accolades they have paid the price year after year to earn. I am honored to know both of these fine gentleman.

Should Olympics require residence & training in country represented?
Posted:

Its a really sticky and complicated issue isn't it? I was the coach of the women's national championship swimming team years ago. I saw both sides of this issue when it was just becoming a serious headache, plus dealing with the GDR sponsored steriod queens. In the summer, we would have girls from all over come to train with us, as well as the US Army and Navy Pentathalon teams. (much to the squeals and delight of the teen age girls) On any given day in the pool, we would have a girls from very modest means. Their dads drove them to practice in the old Chevy and would sit in the stands and watch her, so proud that she was good enough to even be at the level to train 'with the big girls'. Right next to them would be girls from very wealthy families who came to practice in their own convertibles. Next lane would be sponsored girls from South Africa, etc., and next to them, the Army/Navy guys who were getting paid to train with us. Our program benefitted everyone- made it possible for the professional military guys to excell in Olympic pentathalon. Made it possible for the out of country athletes to take a big jump forward, and upon returning to their country, assist in the development of the sport at home. Every day we had professional athletes, nationally sponsored athletes, girls in effect sponsored and supported by wealthy families, and then those who worked as assistants, lifeguards, grounds keepers, burger flippers, etc, to afford their training.
How to level the playing field with this diverse group that is typical of participants in any sport is very difficult. Perhaps one possible solution: Make the World Championships in every sport open to any and all competitors regardless of professional status, residence, or any other factors, in order to determine on any given day, who is the best in the world at that event. Along with that, keep the Olympic Games open only to unsponsored and unpaid amatuers.
I don't know friends, if I really knew how to solve this, I'd run for president.....

Should Olympics require residence & training in country represented?
Posted:

Another twist that gets woven into this, is the displacement of native athletes. Hebe Gofaast lives with his cousin in Fla, and has the resources to pay for the best training. Irunn Atthomme stays and trains in the primitive conditions in his own country, while serving as a role model for all the local kids. Hebe, by virtue of his non resident training, is the faster, stronger athlete, and is appointed to the Olympic team. Is this fair, to deprive Irunn of his chance to be an Olympian? Interesting thought, considering the creed of the Olympic games which says the important thing is not to win, but to compete, and try your best.

Should Olympics require residence & training in country represented?
Posted:

I pose this question which comes to mind every Olympic games. Vast numbers of athletes do not reside in, and have not trained in, the country they represent in the games. Just listen to the introductions: Hebe Gofaast representing Zombikwaystan who lives in Miami and trains at the Florida Zoom club, etc, etc, etc. This is common in many of the sports. IE: is a Chinese basketball player who is a usa multimillionare from the NBA training with the best players in the world every day, with the best coaching in the world every day, REALLY a Chinese athlete? Is a swimmer who has lived in the USA for 15 years, been brought up through the USA swimming system, and gone through an american college on scholarship, REALLY a French athlete?
My question is not should they be allowed to compete- anyone making the standard of entry should compete. But if this is indeed a competition between nations, are we seeing a true representation of that idea?
A) Should the Olympics require 181, or 366 days residence in, and training in, the country you intend to represent?
B) If an athlete does not choose to interrupt their training program in another country, should they be allowed to compete "Unattached" or as part of a multi-nation group?
C) Should the games be restructured to eliminate all national affiliations, and have it be an individual effort only, leaving it to the competitors to put together their own relays, rowing crews, volleyball teams with anyone they choose from any one or combination of countries?
Just food for thought....................

Spinal Fusion in the neck
Posted:
8/6/2008 11:10:26 PM
Spinal cord injury is my area. Any comments on your question are very difficult due to the vast number of variables which may have caused her symptoms. IE: surgery for post trauma mechanical problems if you will, are quite different from arthritic changes, which are quite different from tumors, and so forth. Also, we have no history of what previous treatment may have been tried with or without success. In short, no quick easy answer as to possible results for your friend. Spinal surgery is a very delicate matter, usually undertaken when A) it is emergent or the only course of action left, or B) when there is a good possibility of a positive result. Any surgery of that nature bears risks and possible complications. UK has some very good Neurosurgeons; if this is her course of action, all the best to her.

Help with settling a disagreement about Atlas Shrugged
Posted:

We the Living is probably all the more remarkable , considering it was released in 1936, based on Rand's own background in Russia, and a witness to the Russian Revolution. The concept of a citizens every move being tracked is not now a thin sci-fi of Russia, it is a reality in the USA today. Another side bar that I always found interesting was that Alisa Rosenbaum changed her name upon coming to the US, with a vision of what was ferminting in Europe. Fitting with her tongue in cheek insight, she selected the name of her typewriter- Remington-Rand. Always gave me a chuckle.....
I also struggle with the quote listed by Jumpinjohn above. On the surface, it seems an absolute endorsement of a socialistic society; the very thing she fought against in supporting the goals and lives of her characters. I have heard that topic, and what appears to be a conflict in her philosophy, discussed by many scholars far brighter than I, and never really resolved.
I have discovered one other thing in the past couple of days- yellow magic marker fades over the years.......

Another take on Rand's philosphy was the strong individuality in the face of oppression and attempts by government to control populations. In addition to Atlas, I thought "We The Living" was stellar in this regard.
"We may find it neccesary to visit you, comrade.

Massive Greyhound adoption effort in Kansas City
Posted:
8/2/2008 4:46:45 PM
This is directed to all POF dog lovers. The Woodlands Race Track inKansas City rather abruptly announced it will be ceasing to operate in late August. This is a potential disaster in terms of the number of Greyhounds that will need adoption. Some estimates are as high as 400. REGAP (Retired Greyhounds As Pets) chapter in KC is conducting an urgent effort to avoid a situation where many of these lovely animals may just be abandoned or euthanized. Previous situations like this in other areas resulted in unspeakable suffering for many of the dogs caught in the chaos. One sleazy breeding/racing operation was just abandoned, leaving 40 dogs behind. Only 10 could be saved. We are determined not to have that same scenario repeat itself due to the Woodlands closing.
If you are not familiar with the greyhound breed, they are not a hyper, high maintenance dog. Perfect family pets, and wonderful companions for handicapped individuals and elderly persons living alone. I have assisted in the placement of many of these dogs in nursing homes, where they provide daily therapy for the residents, young and old.
If you are interested in helping us with this effort to place dogs in healthy, happy homes, or know someone who might be, please contact Kansas City REGAP. I have listed the web address below. WOOF, and thanks! Doc

why are the bees leaving ?
Posted:
7/28/2008 12:14:14 AM
Four years ago, bees took up residence in the wall of my horse barn. We paid no attention untill their entry/exit point became too close to the main stall aisle. The premier bee man in Kansas was called to have a look. He did some observation and calculation and estimated there could be as many as 40,000 bees in that colony. We put up scaffolding, relocated animals and the handicapped rider program so he could go to work in all his battle gear. He put several hives out and went to work opening the wall. We were aghast! Solid wall of bees and honey in an area 6 ft x about 10feet. "Aha!" he croaks- "Here she is..." In all that chaos he found 4 queens and relocated each to one of the hives. In less than 30 minutes, every single bee had left the wall and swarmed all over the hive boxes. One box was covered so thick we could not see a bit of the white wood of the box. After looking at the screens in the hives, he estimated there were close to 60,000 bees in the wall. In addition, we weighed nearly 50 pounds of natural honey. It was an amazing process to watch, and the city kids have never stopped telling the story of the great bee migration....
So one answer to why he bees are leaving might beeeeee they all came to my horse barn for summer vacation!

This topic gave me a great laugh and reminded me of my own wonderful near fashion disaster! We had publicity photos for my foundation's charity fashion show the same day that I was scheduled to give a graduation speech. The logistics were such that I planned to drive to the school ceremony after the photos. I allowed about an hour to change from my Van Helsing persona into my nice suit. I arrived at the school straight from the photos in my tall English riding boots, custom long sleeve shirt, silver cuff links, formal leather cape, brimmed hat with long hair flying. "Where can I change?" I asked, as I entered the headmasters office. He dropped the phone, "Thank GOD!!" He jumped up in a frenzied panic, and a hysterical, "COME ON!! What happened? Where have you been?" Too much recent traveling had put my brain one time zone off......... Rather than an hour to get on stage, I had 2 minutes- my intro and music was being played as we ran down the hall and up to the stage. I was doomed!! There was no escaping this disaster- I strode out onto the stage for my "date" with 300 kids in my full Van Helsing formal outfit..............
The initial gasp, and "Whoa, look at that dude.." fell completely quiet as the intro music faded. I have never had a group in such rapt attention; no talking, no texting, 600 eyes following every step I took back and forth across the stage.....
I have worn that outfit for every graduation speech since that day!

Manson follower wants compassion...........................

Now, now, now, friends, a lot of you are not following the RASOPOC! (Required American Standard Of Political Correctness) Stay after school and write on the board, All things All fair to ALL people under All circumstances All the time to ALL humans and All subhumans.
Viewed through the 20/800 vision of RASOPOC and our broken legal system, this whole mess was Sharon Tate's fault for not having an adequate lock on the door. She entrapped these people! Further, it was Kwikset Lock's fault for supplying faulty product. Further, it was US Steel's fault for supplying inadequate Manson proof steel components. Further, it was Pittsburg Coal and Iron's fault for supplying inadequate raw steel. Further, it was God's fault for putting low grade coal under the area of PCI's mine #3. So you can clearly see the whole Manson group have no liability here at all; they are mere victims of these forces at work..........
A pathetic foot note to all this is the fact that if this crime were to happen today in the USA, none of these people would serve a day in prison. They would be social victims idolized by our dumbed down celebrity worshipping culture, making the rounds of all the talk shows, and getting very rich from Movie/TV/Book royalties.

And Canadian friends, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no known cure, the symptoms just get worse and more widespread, infecting more courts, more politicians, and more areas of your life. US Sucked Into Israeli - Iran Conflict
Posted:
6/21/2008 10:12:28 AM
The last months of Bush are a very dangerous time. He knows the Iraq fiasco will prevent any support for his desire to attack Iran. He needs either, A) to convince a front man to provoke them (Israel) and then come to their rescue as the world savior, or B) a real or fabricated precipitating event. Given the unstable, thin ice state of things, this does not need to be a cardiac arrest like 9/11. Just a little sneeze like the death of a few soldiers or a torpedoed oil tanker blamed on Iran will do the job, resulting in congress singing on the steps, and a defend the homeland speech hours before throwing us into another hopeless conflagration.
Scary times for thinking individuals. May lightning strike me, but perhaps it really is better right now to be part of the dumbed down masses and join the 15 y.o. girls with mistakes in their tummies and air in their heads....

stock market so high yet economy is so bad

Since 10/08/07 to today, the DOW has lost just over 16%. In real money that means if you had $10,000 in the market, you now have around $8,400. If you were a long term career person and dilligent contributor to IRA's, 401's. etc. that had a mutual fund/DOW exposure, you could have seen your comfortable nest egg of say $400,000 lose $64,000 !! But hey, airheads like Spencer Pratt get paid $100,000 to show up at an L.A. club- the economy is booming for the celebrity gods our culture worships like the Gladiators in the last days of the Roman Empire.......

Several alarming, "Not meant to happen" cardiac items in this untimely death.
1) A few weeks prior, he had a complete nuclear medicine scan and stress test, showing no significant cardiac abnormalities.
2) By todays standards, 58 is not a fragile elderly person.
3. On medication for Cholesterol, which is also meant to stabilize any existing plaque in the coronary vessels.
4. Had a fairly regular excercise program.
5. Resonably healthy diet, had a life long weight problem, but not a critical issue.
6. No direct genetic link to an early cardiac death.
Gives new importance to William Congreve's statement: "Defer not to tomorrow to be wise, to thee, tomorrow's sun may never rise."

Perhaps the question needs to be rephrased to say, are the contenders and the current President really the best we can show the world for leadership? What I would like to see discussed is the idea of better possible leaders drawing from other areas, ie; Fred Smith, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg, rather than purely the gene pool of politics.

Was it just me or did the coverage of the Indy 500 absolutely suck?
Posted:
5/26/2008 12:44:55 PM
The 3 ladies being knocked out by other drivers stupid mistakes was the only thing worse than the coverage itself! Sara Fishers collision was 70% avoidable; Milka Dunos was 80% avoidable, and Danica Patrick being hit on pit row was 100% inexcusable. I've been involved with racing for over 30 years- Briscoe frying his tires and leaving his box out of control was gold medal stupid! They both could have spun into all the crews in the area and caused a dreadful catastrophe. He should be fined the amount of what would have been her 6th place winnings. I loved it when the security guards had to keep her from getting into his pit area- I would have loved to see her find him and knock his hyper-testosterone lights out!
All that aside, you are correct; the overall race coverage was absolutely dreadful! I think the worst I've ever seen. It was impossible to follow any flow of the race. By contrast, BBC2 ran one hour commercial free all month of qualifying, featuring a different team each night- it was brilliant !

Other Dating Sites/ Scams ?
Posted:
5/9/2008 8:26:29 AM
I had a first hand look into the back room mega business of dating sites a couple of years ago. I was visiting my friends race car shop located in a light industrial area of SOCAL. He was finishing welding an office chair & since he was filthy, asked that I return it through the common wall door to the offices adjacent to his. I walked through a big room with row after row of computer equipment, and past a computer workroom with probably 20 or so people of all varieties, (important to note, not a Fabio, or baywatch babe in the bunch) buzzing away on their machines. It looked like NASA west! Returned the chair to a very nice matronly lady, went back to the shop and commented that it looked like NASA over there. "Yeah, its one of those internet dating things." After recovering my dropped jaw, I managed , "Scuze me?"...... "They run several of those dating and porn sites out of there. Can't complain, though, they've been good neighbors for several years. In fact, those guys are my Landlords- they bought this whole complex a while back."
I was flabbergasted......... big business and big money, friends!

When a woman is so beautiful you can't approach her.

As a result of a childhood accident, I was the ultimate geeky, nerdy guy with leg braces and wrist canes. My plight became very painful as a teen. My beloved father understood this due to his own gangly growth and bad complexion. One of his pearls was, "Remember, as long as you can get on the horse, nothing stops you from being a Prince." Since my Mother was a knock out, I figured he had a real secret, and asked how they got together. He replied, "Well, it was quite simple really, I asked her."
Shortly thereafter, I decided to get on a big horse and put his philosophy to the ultimate test. By luck of the draw, every guys fantasy babe was my lab partner. I asked her out. My leg braces were rattling so loud from nervous legs that I barely heard her say, "Sure! I never thought you liked me." From then on, despite my geekyness, I always showed up at social events with beautiful, intelligent companions. I was asked a few times by the very same "cool kids" that tormented me, how I always managed to pull that off. I took great pride in saying , "Its a highly technical skill my father taught me; I say hello, and ask them." I never forgot that lesson, and one of the last things I said to my terminally ill gentleman father was, "You're still on your horse, Dad."

So why do women find sci-fi unattractive
Posted:
5/7/2008 1:47:01 AM
ok, ok, ok, stop tickling me, I confess! I have had a mad crush on Rachel Rosen for years...........sigh.............. The brilliant conversion of Phillip D1ck's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" into the classic "Blade Runner" has to be appreciated as an art piece regardless of any general interest in sci-fi. There are nearly as many ladies as men in its various fan forums.

Predictions on Final Four?

KU is opening Allen Fieldhouse as they do for all BB/FB playoff games- free for the community to come watch on the JumboTron. Great tradition to be able to watch the game with 20,000 of your close, make that standing room only, friends. KU and NC should be a barn burner. Unfortunately KU lost a good off the bench player at practice yesterday in a freak wet floor accident. Only 9 losses and 143 wins in the 4 teams- what an amazing pool of talent!

(UYCF) Ultimate Youth Cage Fighting. Wrong?

I deal with Spinal Cord and Head injuries. There are no words to express my horror at this insanity. Any parent that would allow, encourage, or push a child into this madness should be sent to the front lines of Iraq for say, 30 years to get their daily fix of violence. This applies to any parent with glazed eyes at a hockey, football, etc, match, screaming, "Knock his head off!" We put people in prison for Pit Bull fighting, and we allow this?
We are fast becoming the most violent nation on earth. We are not respected because of our status as a world leader, we are feared by many as the worlds biggest threat to peace. I have many friends around the globe that will no longer travel in the USA because they think it is an armed to the teeth, unsafe place. I sadly believe that we are at warp speed, becoming a dumbed down nation, whose civil behavior, common sense, and social order, is unraveling at the seams........

Predictions on Final Four?

All righty, time for all semi-rabid fans everywhere to tell it like they think it will be. Amazing group of talent in the Final Four this year; Predictions? I live in Lawrence, KS, home of KU, part of the year, so no need to elaborate on the mania and feelings around here. Sunday night, downtown, by the way, was something to see! I put a video clip on YouTube. The long awaited clash between Williams UNC, and Self KU, the old and the new KU coaches, has even the 88 year old ladies buying prunes talking.......

woman sues airline for passenger shooting semen in her hair

You go girl! Milk it for all its worth you poor victim- 3 million at least! QUICK! before some evil person reforms our broken legal system! Squeeze right in line there behind the guy on death row getting $85,000 for burned toast- he'll help you file the proper poor victim forms- No wait; get Gerald to help you- anyone that gets $225,000 for police brutality throwing him in cuffs after he ran out of three clips of ammo shooting at them surely knows the very best victim approach to take!

Given the totally broken legal system in this country; this action is not being milked (sorry) for truly what it is worth. Driving off with a cigarette in one hand, cell phone in the other, in a stick shift vehicle, and spilling coffee in your lap is worth 1.7 million. The resulting crash from setting the RV on cruise control, and going in the back to make a sandwich is worth 1.3 million. Being locked in the garage of a house you burgled for 18 hours is worth $800,000. This lady has a good 3 million dollar judgement coming. The man involved has a $500,000 action for the woman sleeping in a provocative position and arousing him without his permission. The flight attendant has a $750,000 action for workplace trauma. The pilot has a claim for $400,000 from laughing so hard he dislocated his jaw. Women's rights groups will now file a class action suit on behalf of every woman who sat next to any man anywhere, and were thus exposed to the mental anguish and suffering of this potential threat. AMR will file chapter 11 as a result of all these damage awards. Bush will bail them out by printing more money. The Saudis will congratulate their undercover masterbatory operative; raise crude $20, and book him on a UAL flight for his next assignment.................

What do you miss the most about being a kid again
Posted:

I wrote this several years ago, and it is even more true today:
"I saw two lads on their way to the pool today, they looked to be about ten,
and I remember so long ago, when I was just like them.
The only care I had in the world that day was the sandwich in my pack,
and if my spaniel follwed me, to make sure he went safely back.
Since then I've seen things, I wish I'd never seen, and learned lessons I wish were never learned. I've lost my innocent grin.
Sometimes I wish the world would have stayed........
The way it was when I was ten."

Wooby: (great screen name by the way!) The growing body of research on microwave radiation used for cooking might be of interest if you haven't looked into it already. Or maybe not, everyone has their own preferences; I use a microwave only to heat non drinking water. Great rule of the thumb tip!

Rice Cookers

Once in a while, a product delivers more than expected- I have recently aquired an Aroma rice cooker from Target for $30. I have had two rice cookers in the past, one was about $90, the other $130. This one is far superior in performance to either of those. Doesn't have all the hoots, honks, buzzers, and so forth, but hey, I don't want a spacecraft, I just want good rice. This one also does a fine job of steaming veggies.
If any fellow chefs/healthy eaters are looking for a rice cooker, check this one out, easy to use, easy to clean, and actually does what its meant to do- imagine that!
