Soccer/Football teams
Posted: 11/23/2009 1:53:03 PM
I'm with Johnny ..

Been a Manchester City fan for over 40 years, followed them through thin and thinner , down two divisions and back up again..

C.T.I.D.

The other team I look out for is St. Helens Town, my home town team and the team that got me hooked on footy as a kid :)

Why is US Humor so different from UK Humour?
Posted: 11/23/2009 5:33:02 AM
England here . Manchester.

The simple answer is - that there is not a simple answer .

There is the issue of "culture" - America and Britain are countries divided by the same language. Religious attitudes, personal morality etc etc are all a bit more restrained in the US than over here.

Then there is the issue of an individual's own sense of humour - Python wasnt made so popular in the states by just a few people, you know.. but the TV shows most rated over there are old hat over here - no-one has watched AbFab or Waiting for God for years over here... and we aint seen Benny Hill for about thirty !

But the funniest guys are .... the Irish :-)

And yes I got the OP joke, and no, it was not funny ........

Love Me Do, in about 1962 at the age of five - been a big fan ever since, although some of their subsequent direction changes confused a poor Liverpool kid at the time, still love 'em though !

Jenson at McLaren ..

That will be the big problem - I dont think that he will be able to do that .

Mind you , McLaren have experience of running two world champs in their team before , Senna and Prost - and look how that ended up ! :)

Nascar what else?
Posted: 11/15/2009 3:53:50 AM
James, I agree with you there - as a motorsport competitor myself, if they race it I will watch it also ... even Lawnmower racing occasionally (really!) http://www.blmra.co.uk/modules/services/

OK, I take what you say about NASCAR set-up, I'll watch and listen more closely next time - problem here in the UK is we dont get any talking heads before the races, explaining what's what, just straight into the first lap with the ESPN (?) commentators .

Kobayashi
Posted: 11/14/2009 9:10:33 AM
Kobayashi has been on the fringes for a while now - GP2 champion, and a bit like Lewis in his reputation for passing people :) he is no rookie, but he is good to watch !

Lenson looks like going to McLaren next year - already been to visit the factory and rumoured to have a seat fitting , amidst stories that Brawn won't pay him his requested salary for next year . Thats a shame , as he took a 50% salary cut last year to drive for the team ... Thats business I guess .....

Nascar what else?
Posted: 11/14/2009 8:56:49 AM
Have to say here in the UK we do get to see NASCAR on the box (usually at 3 in the morning !) , but I also have to say that I dont really 'get it' . I'm sure that there is a technique to ovals, and slipstreaming at 200 mph is OK, but what else should I be looking for ?

Not sure if its the cars, or the oval circuits that dont do it for me ? I much prefer to watch 'road ' circuit racing, Australian V8 Supercars, or British Touring Car Championship .

What attracts you to NASCAR ?

Deleted Posts - Why ? [Closed Thread]

How can I find out why my posts get deleted ?

Obviously I would like to remain within the rules, but if I dont know what I am doing wrong, then how can I improve? In my opinion, they were inoffensive, relevant to the topic concerned, and amusing (as opposed to being divisive, malicious, offensive etc like a lot of others I have seen )

Are we becoming collectively disillusioned with online dating?
Posted: 11/10/2009 5:13:09 AM
No, I dont think that we (collectively) are becoming disillusioned with online dating .

Online dating is just another 'tool' by which to meet people of the opposite sex with a view to possibly dating, but its just that - a tool . If you take the whole "online" bit too seriously ( and there are some on here that do ..) then yes, its easy to think that this is the ONLY tool in the bag... Like Octo said, perseverence and an open mind are the keys to success.

It is, however, easy to get disillusioned with certain aspects of the online thing , and i think that many people have deserted these forums, disillusioned by what they thoughtthey were going to get out of them, but that is not to be confused with disillusionment with "online dating" per se.

And why do all the fit ladies never want to do that ??!

Misinterpretion in forum posting
Posted: 10/27/2009 1:44:23 AM
Like Zee said, the guy was obviously taking this comment of yours completely the wrong way and is being - shall we say - oversensitive... Have to be careful how I describe him, as I dont want to upset anyone ...

I have unintentionally upset the moderators on several occassions, who clearly did not 'get' my sense of humour , and consequently I did 'get' a ban .... Generally I'm too bland to really upset anyone , although I do get accused of grandstanding (whatever that is ..)

Ignore him lynx , or you could always 'write' a smiley face like this :) on the other forum ..

Staying for the kids.

Noooooooooooooooooo. Nope nope nope. Oh and did I forget to say No?

Not a good idea. I know this from experience. Noone can stay for the kids indefinitely without it ultimately negatively affecting the children because if we're not true to ourselves them how can we ever be true to anyone else.

Spot on, and exactly what happened in my situation - we got back together for the sake of the kids , didnt work , they pick up on the jibes, the unhappiness, the lack of love and emotion, etc - kids are like sponges , they are not stupid !

The pictures of the Abu Dhabi track are incredible, looks like a fantasstic venue. If the track is as good as the rest of it, it would be fantastic.

... unfortunately, there will not be anyone there to see it sadly - attendances at the mid east tracks is struggling to get into the twenty thousands mark, a far cry from the European tracks regularly getting 100,000 + ( Spain, Spa, Monza, even the UK etc etc ) ...... purely for the telly !

We need some limits here - Can someone give me a finite definition of "overweight" "obese" or "fat" or "normal" weights and sizes ?

Because if we are going to discriminate against the overweight, we should have a firm set of rules to say who we can insult / complain about , and who are exempt from such biggotry........

Apart From Metal.
Posted: 10/19/2009 5:31:53 AM
I have been brought up with listening to metal from its inception in the mid sixties (I had an older brother!) and early Deep Purple stuff through to the stuff that we get today - I can go with most of it, some of it is a bit teen-metal-pop stuff, and some of the screamo stuff I dont really like (eg Bullet for My Valentine, Taking Back Sunday etc ). That said, I like also some blues, some rap, some country, some pop, etc etc etc

But I think that actually a lot of people who put " except for metal" are actually not too sure what "metal" is - I think that maybe in the years gone by, they heard one or two tracks by (for example) Metallica, or UFO, and decided that they didnt like it full stop. And never will. Like all genres, its eveolving and changing. There are actually some quite sensitive and beautiful 'metal' tracks around .

Keep an open mind - never say "never "

Just me two pence worth ...

Remember we are talking POST - op here :

For example, you can put a ford engine in a vauxhall car, the car will look like a vauxhall but will still be a ford due to the engine

To continue the analogy :-
Actually Nope, it will be a Vauxhall in every way (looks, appearance, handling, comfort etc etc ) ... only the very experienced and those 'in the know' would be able to tell that there was something a bit different about this Vauxhall...

Same with a POST op - you would not even know neccessarliy unless someone told you.

(actually you would never want to put a Ford motor into a Vauxhall, as everone in the know realises that the Vauxhall red top motor is way superior to the modern Ford stuff ... loads of red tops find their way into modded Mk1 and Mk 2 Escorts etc etc ... )

CONGRATULATIONS JENSON
Posted: 10/19/2009 5:08:02 AM
Quite right, the car is always a most important part of the team, but what you will find is that the best drivers almost always gravitate into the best cars ultimately - its the way of all motorsport, not just F1

I think unlike Hamilton last year few are saying he is the best and even in the second half of the season was second best to his team mate. I think Sebastian was more deserving but Button won the points and performed brilliantly when everything was going well for him. Button needs to improve on this performance next season if he is going to be considered a great driver

I think that Jensons only problem is trying to get the best out of a slightly underperforming car - as someone else said this weekend, if the car is spot on , he is devastatingly quick and smooth - Rubens didn't get a sniff in the first part of the season - but if the car is lacking a bit of grip or balance (as it was in the second half of the season) then he struggles to get round the issues, unlike Rubens or even Vettel, hence Rubens beat him frequently in the second half.

Strangely, when the car is really bad ( as it was in 07 and 08 ) he out performs the car by miles (even won in 07 in the Honda, I think, in the rain) and trounced Rubens all season

CONGRATULATIONS JENSON BUTTON - WORLD CHAMPION 2009

Great drive from him today , did just enough , passed people with aggression where he needed to , and like I have said all along, he is a lucky ********* !!

The luck went his way again today - dont ever play poker with JB !! Rubens' poor luck continued with a puncture in the last 5 laps following contact with Lewis' end plate , to end his challenge there and then . Very sporting response from Rubens at the end.

The fairy tale was completed by Brawn GP winning the constructors title at their first attempt - congratulations to all the team . :0)

oggers, i don't intend to skimp on a skid lid, i've been looking at the shark S900, 159 notes and its got alot of pluses for it. i also intend to invest in back protection.

Shark make some good lids - but get yourself off to a stockist, and try several different makes on to see what fits you best ... it might sound daft but heads are different shapes and different makers lids fit YOUR head differently to others - you need to find one thats comfy for YOU .

I tried loads from OGK, Shark, Shoei, but the two that "fit " my shape of head were either Suomy or Arai. I bought Arai .

And like Lance sez, dont ever ride without proper protection, even in the heat ( you will find that jackets and trousers often have little vent zippers at suitable places to allow air flow through the clothing when you need to ...

Let us know how you get on !

Is this a private argument or can anyone make a point ?

Now, I don't know what definition of 'normal' you use, but I use this one:
OED Normal; conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.

Surely if the split between straight and gay sheep is constantly around the 92% / 8% mark, then that ratio in the population as a whole is seen as "the norm" .. any significant variation (within given statistical parameters ) in the 92 / 8 % split can be seen as "abnormal"

The 92 % portion is not the "norm" , it is the majority.

Never too old for jeans, or any other piece of clothing - dont let the fashionistas tell you what you should and should not wear
I wear jeans (yes, even skinnies)
I wear denim jackets occassionally
I wear t shirts
I wear baseball sneakers

I wear what I want to wear

Wont it just be soooooooooooo funny when the fashion police get to the age where they wake up and suddenly dress in old trousers 2" too short in the leg, but hitched to their chest , and nylon 'car coat' and flat cap ..

Good to hear a pro bike attitude for a change - you will love riding .
I did exactly the same as you - had a pootle around for an hour in a car park, and then booked a CBT and course of lessons to get through the test.

Best thing that you can do after you r test is look into advanced course, or even a Bikesafe course (run by the local old bill) - they really do teach you how to ride defensively as Mac said

buy an old hack to trundle around on at first, get a feel for life on two wheels, wont be so expensive when you drop it ( and you will !) BUT DOnt skimp on kit - buy the best you can afford , doesnt have to be leathers, there are some great textile jackets and trousers out there with loads of protection , but especially get a GOOD LID - check RiDE magazine for the best buys for value / protection etc

Have fun !

Homosexuality
Posted: 10/14/2009 3:31:21 AM
Your post appears to have been removed, Brown**Eyes, no doubt victim of the Forum Police again ...

Do people think this is a good thing and a good way forward that attitudes are obviously changing (they've changed considerably since my day) or do some think this is almost promoting homosexuality as something cool?

I dont think that you need to promote homosexuality or heterosexuality- I think that attitudes have sufficiently shifted over the last twenty years or so such that most teen kids know what being gay or straight is all about (or think that they do) , and just accept it as a fact of life.

Generally this shift is a good thing - In the past we used to laff AT Larry Grayson (and his friend Everard), but we used to laff at HIM, not at his comedy. Now , we laff at Graham Norton's jokes and not him. Barriers have come down on gayness to a large extent , as they have also on racial, but I would not say that it's ever promoted as "something cool" to be gay ... ?

Nor have I seen any "witch hunts " and "burnings" on here over gay topics ?

Homosexual persons call people who aren't like them "straight", using that terimology then they would be "bent"...

These were, indeed, widely used terms in the fifties, sixties, seventies . Bent also is a term used to refer to people who are into selling / receiving illegal / stolen goods, or a minor criminal in some way. Remember that homosexuality was illegal in the fifties and sixties - it was only de-criminalised in 1967 , so the term 'bent' could easily have arisen from this criminality.

Reasonably happy in my own skin, I like who I am , I wouldn't change much if I had the opportunity .. OK maybe the glass eye and humpty back, oh and I suppose the wooden leg, club foot I suffer from rickets, and - well, - I'd also like to be hung like a horse ( well, dont all blokes ..?!)
