There are lots of people around Oregon who believe the way of the Hippie...Most just don't call themselves that. In this area...around Mapleton there are several communes...here is a link to the longest standing one, they also have a store/cafe in Mapleton....Alpha Farm is the commune and Alpha-Bit is the store/cafe.

Eugene Oregon and the Olympic tryouts...
Posted:
4/10/2008 4:02:36 PM
There’s all kind of speculation in the Media these days about the Olympic tryouts in
Eugene and demonstrations against China. They wonder if people in Eugene will visibly
show their support for the Tibetan People…Heck, I grew up in the Eugene area and they
have been showing their support visibly as long as I can remember.
Eugene is called Track Town for good reason, but it is also the home of a great many displayed
Tibetan Prayer Flags. I have had a sting of them hung in my yard since I moved here almost
two years ago, and they have been quite a conversation starter…some people seem to have
trouble grasping the idea that the prayers are not for my benefit, but for the world and
humanity...But Some people get a wonderful little smile on their face when I explain why
they are in my yard. The guy that I dated last year thought that it was time to take them
down because they were starting to fray, HA! That is just when they are starting to work!
Two Christmas’ ago I got them for my family members…to My surprise my Mom was
tickled…she had seen them hanging around Eugene, thought they were neat and did some
research to find out what they were. She had wanted some but didn’t know where to get
them…
ANYWAY, since some people I know in the valley wanted to show their support
but didn’t know how I found this site and sent it to them. You can read about them and
print out prayer flags on colored paper to hang up…to show your support.
Check it out if you care to -

I would like to do a Gem field campout trip, my sister went to a gem field for sun stones and just picked them up on the ground... I don't know Eastern Oregon like I know the coast so I don't know all of the best places to camp. I do know that there are state parks that have teepees, covered wagons, cabins and yurts for camping...so you wouldn't even need a tent. But, I know that yurts on the coast are not so easy to get and take some advanced planning to reserve.

This conversation got me thinking about it...it's been a few years since I have been there, but it was called Winter River Books when last I had the pleasure... Aren't we lucky to live in a wonderful state such as Oregon
LoudSilence I'll bet that you know some great places in Eastern Oregon, I would love to go Ghost Town hunting sometime... I have a book on Ghost Towns and Gem Fields, so I know there are a lot of good locations.

Hmmm...I have always wanted to camp at Mt Humbug, I've heard that it is a sheltered and warm camp all year round, it's around Port Orford area. I also like Bandon, one of my favorite book stores is there...but it Is a bit South. Last year no one would decide where to have the campout, people in the North wanted it in the North, and the same for people in the South, so I picked a state campground just North of Florence because it is pretty much mid-way from each state line...and there were still people complaining
Go figure...

Check on-line for info on the festival, I'm sure that the Astoria chamber of commerce would have an events section on the city site...New Port and Yachats have information for events posted. I wish I were close enough to join you guys. Since it's a wine festival I would suggest getting a room, that's what I do when I go to the New Port one...always a good idea

Yaotzen, I know the Sweet Home area, very beautiful around there...where are you located, maybe you could have a hand in helping to plan a campout. I so dislike seeing anyone limit themselves, some of the very best friends I've had in my life were/are nothing like me, And I learned from them, They learned from me...Ahhh a perfect/imperfect relationship

I went to grade school in Coburg (just north of Eugene) and then to Eugene schools, so I grew up in this area, and I know the coast very well... The campout last summer was at the campground next to that lighthouse. I like that area because it has sandy beaches and rocky/tide pool ones too.
One of the reasons that I like Matchdoctor is that you have a bulletin board that you can send notices to your friends list only, it made planning way easy last year...

Sweets camping gear can be pooled, and there is no shame in 2nd hand gear...make it a treasure hunt for garage sales
Slady, do you fish? The compound that my house is part of has a dock on the Siuslaw river... Yep,
Florence is ok, but my favorite area is Yachats a bit north of here.

I am 16 miles inland from Florence...about an hour out of Eugene on Highway 126. Inland far enough to be sheltered from the wind and such, but close enough to the central coast that north or south coast destinations state line to state line can be day trips
I helped organize a singles camping trip last summer...though some people showed (to camp or just for the day) we didn't get that big of a turn out. But we did have a great time!!!
This year would like to do it differently...last year I was the only woman who showed up to camp, and since I'm here to meet more friends it was not what I call ideal... I would like to get a core group of women going to maybe organize singles gatherings around the state. I think more women would have shown If they had known for sure that other women were camping also... I do not mind hosting a gathering at my home for women, but sorry guys...I am hesitant to do the same with men I have not met yet.
Last year I tried to link this site and Matchdoctor (which is another free site) for the campout...was hoping that two sites were better than one
Might give it a go again this year...

Camp Sherman and the head waters of the Metolius is a fun place
I bring peanuts along for the trail to the head waters...the Chipmunks come running from All Over and will eat out of your hand
The bark on the trees reminds me of ginger snaps...And the Metolius river just springs up out of the ground.

I have been on a grunion hunt years ago...we sat on the beach by a fire at night, then someone called out that the grunion were running, people poured out to the waters edge...it turned out to be a cigarette butt shining in the moonlight
It was fun...puts me in mind of a snipe hunt
I gathered that running grunion is something that is kind of a rare thing to see...but the waters on the coast of Oregon are too cold, so they Really are a rare sight here! But, we do have Smelt here, they are somewhat alike...little silver fish

I believe that you are talking about Shore Acres State Park, Grammy! It IS a really cool place, and at Christmas they put lights all around the park, really beautiful! There are several parks on the coast that do the light thing, Honeyman Park outside of Florence also puts up lights...

Matchdoctor is another free site...I don't find it as dead as Custis, but everyone says that they want to meet people in a safe environment and then when you try to organize it they all go into the dead zone.
What is nice about the snow here is that it lasts usually just a couple of days...long enough for the cozy nesting feeling but not too long. Last year we had it 5 times for a few days at a time, not too bad in little bites like that. Custis probably wouldn't mind the snow if he had someone to cuddle with by the fire

We don't have to go through Matchdoctor.com, just thought that with two sites more people, more people the merrier the time
There are different formats on both sites, I like different things on both...now that I've gotten use to this site I've been going back and forth more. I mentioned POF in the discussion over there, maybe more people from Matchdoctor will come and join in here!

Ha! I like you Grammy
you are fun. I hear you about the black ice, I've hit it at Badger Mt on Hwy 126...lucky for me that I had slowed down because freezing rain had blurred my vision by landing on my windshield. What a wild ride... I guess that's why Oregon has the law about adjusting your driving speed to the weather conditions
I've been trying to get a discussion going on Matchdoctor for get togethers...but last year it was like pulling teeth to get some participation going. Sure could use a jump start over there...

Opps...I'll have to check my restrictions.
Yep, I love wildflower hunts...my favorite place is up the Mckenzie at horseshoe falls. I like to go in the spring and see them in bloom and then go back in late summer or fall and get a few seed pods...I toss the seeds into the hedgerows here abouts and hope that they will take root. I'd like to learn more about the edible and medicinal plants in Oregon...can never learn too much!
I haven't spent time in your neck of the woods, it sounds like a very interesting area...

Well, the campout was great!!! The weather was perfect for flying kites and the beach was beautiful. We made shishkabobs, played music and even had our pictures taken with Smokey the Bear
For those of you who didn't make it...I am sooo sorry you missed out. We had several camp sites with so much room for tents that we probably couldn't have filled it up if all those who were interested showed. We want to do it again, so who would be interested???

You know JoymongerJim the thought never entered my head that there might be any feelings of
competition...After all both sites are free and a combined effort is always stronger. I suggest that we make a banner with both site names on it and give equal attention to both.
BTW I couldn't find my net for volley ball...Maybe someone has one that they can bring...it would be most appreciated.
JoymongerJim mentioned on the other forum posting for a singles party that we are doing a shishkabob thing, but we are also going to do grilled pizzas, so if shishkabobs aren't your thing then bring some toppings for the grilled pizza. And while on the subject of food it has been decided that while we are going to do a dinner/potluck thing and once together might collaborate on other meals, for the most part feeding you is on you.
Still having trouble with my email on this site, but I see that I am not the only one, hopefully it will be fixed soon...but I can be easily reached on the other Free singles site.

Don't worry...I will make sure that you feel welcome. Remember, even if we have been talking online, it will be the first time that most of us will be meeting in person. You are not the only one living on the coast that wants to come during the day, but we still need an RSVP to know how many people to plan activities for. And you might want to throw a sleeping bag in the car, you never know you might decide to stay and I'm sure that someone would have room in their tent for an extra. Also, we are trying to get one of the yurts there for a gathering spot, and kite building location, and anyone without a tent could sleep in it...IF we can get one that is....

Additional site info...the sites are $3.00 ($17.00) cheaper than most other campgrounds, most sites are of good size and can be shared by multiple tents. But if shared the cost will be split accordingly...I am willing to share my site with other women's tents. The campground was chosen not only for the location (just about the middle of the state), but also for the size, there are enough sites that even if someone came late they could at least be in the same campground. For those who don't wish to camp Florence is close enough that they could get a room and join us during the day. Dunefest is going that weekend in Winchester Bay, and there is a Pathways to Transformation fair in Yachats that weekend also...so there are other things to do besides hanging out on the beach (my favorite).
If you plan on attending Please RSVP so that we know how many people will be there...one of the activities already planned is a kite building contest and a member on the other site is bringing materials so he'll need to know how much to bring. Also we are encourging everyone to make a Sign or Banner with their online name on it so that people who have talked with you online can find your camp.

I hope so...it's been planned on another free singles site, but we need/want more people (especially women...can I say that???). My posting kept being deleted, don't know if I was putting too much info (name of other site) or posting announcement in the wrong place...but they seem to have left it on this time.
As I said it is planned for the first weekend in August, the 3rd, 4th & 5th...I plan on setting up my camp on Thursday (I llike to get there early). The campground is Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park, the sites are first come, first serve...AND there are HOT showers
If you have ever heard of The Hobbit Trail the campground is next to it, just past Heceta Head Lighthouse just North of Florence. We are brainstorming right now for Icebreakers and Fun Activities, so if anyone has any great ideas please speak up
Come on everyone, the more the merrier...
