what sort of car to buy
Posted: 1/11/2010 7:51:13 PM
i bought my kia sportage a couple of years ago, and its really doing a good job, fairly cheap to run, nothing more than general services, and fits the camping gear and the dogs very well. ive done a lot of miles in it, its comfortable and reliable

You took a taxi? Bad choice. Trams, trains, buses, bicycles, and walking are much cheaper and a far better way to get around
exactly! and getting around is easy- so many people speak english and are so helpful, a group of teenagers even got off the train they wanted, to show us where we should be!!
i cycled everywhere, in winter, and of course it was cold, but what else would it be ??
lovely place, picture perfect, and met great people.....they are soooo tall though lol i felt so short! its all relevent though - i felt like a giant in vietnam!

Poor Dental hygeine
Posted: 11/29/2009 1:40:29 PM
Yes I really want to see another incompetent dentist. There is only one dentist I would consider seeing, thats one that scared of the dentist. So scared he's learned to work on himself. lol.
ive had a very simple system for years....and it works! when i enter the dentists room i look them in the eye and tell them quite calmly that if they dont hurt me i wont hurt them!!

"Strong and independant" are often confused for "arrogant and holier than thou".
Akin to the male comparison of confusing confidence with "being an c0cky a$$hole".
wise young man....strength doesnt have to be noisy or obnoxious

eeeeeww! just had to go brush my teeth lol!!!
my ex hardly brushed his teeth in 20 years, i mean seriously, i could probably count the times on my fingers.....yukyukyuk...shudders!!
and yes, the rest of his personal hygeine was not nice, so i tend to be very aware of teeth and clean teeth matter!!

couple arrested for not tipping.,,
Posted: 11/22/2009 2:38:41 PM
A tip is a handout. hence the term TIP. if a "tip" is mandatory it should be called a fee not a tip. the whole concept of a "mandatory gratuity" is completely asinine.
exactly, a total contradiction in terms!
will agree with the aussie guy. Lets increase the price of everything on the menu in America by 20-25%, pay the increase to the waiter/waitress, and call it good. See how you cheapskates like it then. I would love the look on everyone's faces when they waddled into their favorite resturants and saw that one!
the whole point is that in most countries, yes, here in australia for instance, we do pay a bit more to eat out, and are quite happy to, and bar and restaurant staff earn a living wage, we dont have this ridiculous system of beng forced to pay a "voluntary" fee, menus need to be priced realistically so that everyone, staff, owners, patrons, can all benefit from the experience!

Female Athletes
Posted: 11/22/2009 1:50:01 PM
can remember when women were told that they were not supposed to be athletic, and have any muscle tone. Women were not supposed to be competitive with each other -- and certainly not with men.
just another thought on this, there is so much more knowledge now, about building muscle, for instance if a woman goes to the gym, or a personal trainer, and wants to be strong, and muscled, but not bulky, they will be shown appropraiate exercises, not the "one size fits all" approach of the past, which often just meant you would develop nice big muscles, not neccessarily ideally suited to your particular sport!

Why is violence for self defence acceptable by law since you can just run away instead?
Posted: 11/22/2009 1:16:52 PM
But... where possible run like your life depends on it (it just might), running is not the cowards way out, it is the smart way out. In fact I believe running might be the best Martial art in existence.
my first karate instructor always reminded us, a fast pair of feet is the best defence.
quiteright, but, since im not the worlds fastest runner, i figured id better work on the other aspects!
so far, the increased awareness and good obserevation skills ive had drummed into me through years of classes have avoided confrontation, but if it ever came to someone attacking me, i would give it all ive got! im not about to stand there and be hit!!

Dyslexia - Online stammering?

know they dvla want written letter saying i have dyselxia which i dont have
you need to get a letter from your doc, or havent you ever had a diagnosis? if not, it might be a good idea to buzz along to see your doc, coz if youre just assuming you have dyslexia, coz you fit a lot of the criteria, you may be missing out on some really valuable help-with the panic attacks too

driving
Posted: 11/16/2009 2:03:06 PM
Some people, though very competent drivers just cant get to grips with a gearstick. If that really is you, then go for the auto. There's nothing to stop you going for the manual allowance as your confidence and experience grows.
good point, though if she follows annieseas ideas, learning, eventually to drive a manual will never happen! and on that subject, i really doubt the left foot is going to be any quicker getting to the brake than the right, i think its probably just a case of some people reacting/responding better in an emergency than others

So as summer approaches, are we Fire Ready this time? Are you?
Posted: 10/27/2009 2:03:07 PM
was and still am annoyed by people baying that there was "no warning" on the 7th of Feb this year. I distinctly remember the premier and fire chief on tv two nights before telling people that Saturday was going to be the "day from all hell" as far as weather and wind were concerned. But Ash Wednesday was 25 years ago, and people forget.
i was, and still am, stunned by some of the interviews i saw, one family, who said there was no warning, described how they spent that day, inside, curtains drawn to keep out the heat, watching dvds!!
what did they expect? a knock at the door???
we had the fires here in 2007, we had a pump on the dam, covered, directly to the the sprinklers on the roof, and 2 pumps on water tanks on trailers, the animals all up by the house, everything combustible from around the house thrown in the shed 50m away, and 3 ways out of the property....we were still lucky, and i guess it all starts again now

Camping tips and recipes

Best tip I have is to put your coffee grounds in a filter and twist the top, tie it off w/ a twist tie and Voila! Filtered coffee in the morning w/ no grounds in it. If you store them in a plastic ziploc you can also water proof them a bit, and have a pot a day or more. No carrying measureing spoons, fancy coffee makers, or grounds in the mug. I am not a morning person until a cuppa, so....
ive discovered coffee bags!! very good things! its actually not bad coffee, and so much easier to pack/carry

just to add a little more to beachippys aussie view, from another one, hey hey is not, has never been a talent show, and the name of the short segment is RED FACES!! its about the performers taking te p i ss out of themselves, not anyone else! there was never any danger of the good docs ( of varying ethnicities) thinking they should give up their day jobs lol red faces has always just been a chance for people to have a laugh at their own expense, and hopefully for the audience to laugh too
we are very lucky here to have a tolerence and liking for people from all over the world, and the ability to laugh at ourselves and each other, with no offence intended or taken

The Three Point Turn
Posted: 10/11/2009 4:22:05 AM
I said learn to drive it if you can't handle it. If it takes a nine point turn to do something that takes a normal vehicle three points,
ummm..... are you referrring to someone backing out of a parking space? a 3 point turn is for turning 180 degrees - to end up driving the other way up the street basically.
totally agree that driving skills are essential, but i see people in all sorts of vehicles, who id really rather not be sharing the road with, its probably just the same horse different jockey thing, i live in a town where practically everyone has a 4x4, but some of the tourists coming through and doing the hairiest things in the snow etc, in their nice sedans would stand your hair on end!!

Hey! Hey !..OOoopps.... Redfaced over blackface skit... any thoughts..?
Posted: 10/9/2009 2:27:09 PM
The whole kinda point of that segment of the show was people making fools of themselves really.
exactly!! and i wonder if this has been understood at all in america, hey hey was referred to as a talent show on the view.....???!!!
Personally I think the word 'racism' is often applied in situations where it doesn't belong. These guys were impersonating the Jacksons in a stupid skit. It was cr@p, but it isn't an outrage. But some will always rush to grab a seat on the most PC side.
if impersonating someone is racism, im guilty, i did the whole tina turner thing at a work theme night, and quite a few others strayed from their ethnicity....

Dancing Strictly for poofs
Posted: 10/8/2009 3:21:09 PM
I agree entirely with the above statement. I have recently run a campaign from my local village hall aimed at bringing back the slow dances at the end of the night. The campaigns imaginative title is " Return of the erection section". The idea is to get the DJ to play some smoochy tracks for the last 20 minutes of the night, to bring people together. I have fond memories of lustful gropes on the dancefloor whilst in a drunken stupor. Happy days indeed
our little town still has dances at the local hall, we have a rock n roll night next week, and bring on the fellas who can dance!! blokes who dance are very sexy!

Autism Parents
Posted: 10/8/2009 1:28:48 PM
Yup, but that is for an "autism spectrum disorder",
yes, and autism spectrum disorder, simply refers to any person on the spectrum, anywhere from profoundly autistic to aspergers, that definition has been around for many years now, so the numbers quoted are probably pretty accurate.
about the only difference is probably better diagnosis of kids with aspergers, but fortunately this has been the case for a fair while now.
the waiting list at work just grows, despite increased staff and services

when you found out that your child has ADHD how did u handle it and what steps did u take
Posted: 10/1/2009 5:05:20 AM
strattera is one of the newer medications approved for use in adhd, and it falls into the "uptake inhibitor" group of drugs, like many anti depressents. one of the adverse reactions noted, (and the medication comes with a warning) is an increased number of patients with suicidal tendencies, so if your son, sarahbecca, was showing anything like that, you certainly did the right thing in getting him off it.
the drugs such as ritalin, concerta etc, are not usually associated with weight gain, if anything, the opposite, and of course the advantage with the stimulant drugs, is that you can tell imedietly, if they are going to help the child.
there are many kids who will tell you that life without medication, is just so chaotic, they just want to scream.....not nice, and a good reason to find the right medication, good luck : )

vaccines=autism?????
Posted: 9/30/2009 2:40:49 PM
this topic came up on the UK threads, and this is what i wrote there, my work is in autism, and i also provide respite for the family of the beautiful teenage boy snoozing in my spare room at the moment, until his jabs, he was developing normally, speech etc, all that regressed in a space of weeks. of the hundreds of kids i know, many were obviously "different" from birth, many like this one, were definitely not. my own daughter had such a terrible reaction to her first one, i didnt go fo another, i may have been very lucky...and as i hear at so many conferences, and read in articles etc, the jury is still out on the cause of autism, yes, there is often quite a few members of a family, who have autism, but they are also, all in the same environment, subject to the same infuences, so while there is a very strong argument for genetics, it is not proven beyond doubt

Working mothers have unhealthiest children
Posted: 9/29/2009 2:21:31 PM
which is another thing.. you can be fined or sued by the "state" if you look after a non family member's child for more than x amount of hours per week..
are you serious??? and what is the justification for this??
on topic though, ive worked since my kids were tiny, my daughter even came with me to work, she was the sort of baby you could take anywhere, just all smiles, and never a peep out of her, but my kids have always had a healthy lifestyle, it takes no longer to make a steak and salad, than it does to heat a microwave meal, and since they had to walk a couple of km to the bus, that was just the start of their exercise, then they was riding, swimming, bushwalking and just all the fun that kids find out in the paddocks

Posted: 9/11/2009 2:28:02 PM
There are times when midwives are abused verbally whilst performing their duties, and it's of no use to anyone if they are inclined to throw up their hands and flounce off.
the training which comes later will deal with this, and teach strategies for coping with difficult patients- i deal with abusive clients every day - its not personal

You say you don't have any friends on your course
ok, so stick to friends outside of the course, just keep in mind, you are there to get a qualification, not to make friends, dont let this stop you, dust yourself off, and get back in there and do the best thing you can for yourself, which is to follow your dreams- good luck

These types of phrasings only have a bad reputation because of their misuse
exactly, i always cringed , when out with my ex, when i heard him say,(often) "no offence...but" , as i knew he was about to be very offensive to someone!
which is why im not sure i can judge this expression
"without prejudice"
!!! i think i prefer not to fall back on stock phrases, rather state clearly what i mean, such as " having carefully considered your opinion/decision, i disagree, and would like to present....."

wow, where did you travel in oz? what where you expecting that didnt live up to expectations?
Many of the aussies I've met, are strange
ok we are a weird mob, but nice !
They tend too be heavy drinkers, and many seem rather smug. I also know of others who have concurred with me.
there are some areas where there is a heavy drinking culture, but its not everywhere, but smug?? lol most aussies are pretty laid back and i cant imagine how we come across as smug! id be really interested to know where you were to form these opinions

California Wildfires - Self-Responsibility
Posted: 9/1/2009 3:10:16 AM
i had a bushfire through my place 2 years ago, i chose to stay, and if i hadnt come through it, that would have been entirely my choice.
our firefighters are volunteers and i figured id better do my bit too, i was well prepared, with 3 firefighting pumps and mobile tankers, plenty of water, and the best help i could rope in, including my son-in-law, who is like a real life mcgyver lol. a huge proportion of the state was on fire for 69 days, and it was like a war, after the main front passed and we could finally catch our breath, our 1st thought was to wonder if there was anyone else left.....it was just devestation.
it was the following day before we heard that everyone in the area was safe, and that most people had managed to save their homes, with the amazing help of the fire crews, ground, and air.
some people who stay in fire situations, are just not well prepared though, and that can be just suicide.

Hostels
Posted: 8/27/2009 4:14:37 PM
Hostels are a good way to meet other backpackers across the globe. Although I know here in Italy a lot of Hostels have a age limit of 30 years. You being older might be limited in the hostels you can stay at.
i found that in italy!! my friend and were so shocked lol !!! and they told us we couldnt stay before they saw our passports lol very bad reality check!!! havent had that problem anywhere else, i just wonder what would have happened if just one, not both of us had been in the ancient class....
ive stayed in hostels all over the place and they are fantastic, you meet heaps of great people and have a ball, and some of the beautiful historical buildings are an experiecnce in themselves

kids having boyfriends/girlfriends
Posted: 8/27/2009 3:26:01 PM
ive always talked very openly to my kids and their friends about gfs and bfs and everything that entails at various stages.
ive found that somewhere around 14 or 15 they become very determined to have sex, (keep the condoms handy!) but shortly after actually trying it, they take a more sensible approach, and just mess around a little, and seem quite happy to stay at that level until they are older.
so, talk to them, listen, but you cant be wth them 24/7 so you have to hope that you have established the communicaion well enough that you will hear whats going on, and you can bring out the big guns if they are not behaving safely- that i think is the key - they can tell you anything, and you wont over react, so that when you do say, whoooaaa, they know there is a good reason, and will listen

Posted: 8/27/2009 2:56:09 PM
I'm so proud as I trot around the globe to tell people we have some of the best food in the world in Melbourne, certainly some of the worlds best restaurants.
absolutely, i feel the same, but since im already gettng very itchy feet again, , and have been wanting to head off somewhere for a while, youre making me very jealous!!
i love that we have such an incredible variety of food here, remember when the most exotic thing available was the greek or italian fish and chip shop??
we can now wander and choose practically anything from the world over, yum!!!

the art of flirting
Posted: 8/26/2009 2:13:32 PM
Flirting can be sexual or non-sexual and is a natural human tendency. I am a natural flirt – I love communicating and I find myself initiating conversation with strangers wherever I go. If I encounter someone who looks good, I don't think about complimenting them I just do it. Making other people feel good bounces right back at me. Guess the best flirts I know are confident people who know they have something to offer the world and love making others feel great.
beautifully put!! thats it

Seriously, if you like someone....tell them. How easy is that? If they like you.....they should tell you back......bingo! Get to know each other slowly
quite agree with you , but hey might as well flirt with them while you are telling them

Know how to have fun?
Posted: 8/23/2009 6:31:31 PM
Try Ethiopian food.
do that its very good, but make sure you wash your hands well , lol, the place i went to doesnt have utensils - you just scoop it up with flat bread and end up chasing bits with your hands!
as for more fun, hanging upside down on monkey bars is excellent, in fact most things in kids playgrounds are great!
go dancing! cant beat that for feel good stuff!
walk, just about anywhere
jump in water, the sea, a river, even just a pool
also agree that people watching is always interesting!

Posted: 8/23/2009 6:21:40 PM
i tried one once, just for interest, and if id paid attention to it, i would have ended up in the creek......it was telling me to go straight ahead, when the road actually made a right angle turn......straight ahead was apparantly where the road was going to go, according to old town planning maps , but it never happened!!

Drunken Violence

But sure, and since I made this clear in my posting, if you're talking about simply walking home from the pub with your friends in a quiet and orderly fashion, and you say hello to a few people, regardless if you've had a few drinks nothing I've written applies to you. That's obvious.
But then you wouldn't have responded...
well, actually, i would respond, because i have an opinion, and feel free to express it, and quite simply, most people meeting me walking home wouldnt find me much, if any different than usual, im always friendly to to people i meet, after the pub or otherwise
And again whilst you think you're just giving a warm wishing tipsy "goodnight" stumbling home from the pub with a few pissed friends, that is not what the two conservative church going 19yr olds see, to reiterate one example, they see a group or gang of drunken people who yell at them from across the street, and they are fearful
anyone, who is in the stumbling state you describe is at risk themselves out there, and i certainly wouldnt be wandering the streets stumbling and out of control, ive walked home from pubs across the globe, and while having had a good night, im busy being aware of my surroundings, and watching my back
I mean according to you, these churchies are just being judgemental anti-abortionist freaks with sticks up their arse about drinking, say and that's how they seem. But to the law you're assaulting them the moment you give them:
"the apprehension of violence or threat." (ref: Crimes Act)
Which is basically if they have any good reason to be fearful of your party, which you may disagree with but then consider the source. It's if they have good reason to be fearful.
i dont remember mentioning churches, or the people who are associated with them, and the way you put it every door knocking JW who haas come to my door, has given me "the apprehension of violence" - some of them have made me very uncomfortable
The simple fact is, if you were sober and adult, and walking down the street in the middle of the night with a group of friends you'd be doing it in a quiet and orderly fashion.
not neccessarily, it doesnt take alcohol to have me dancing....i was dancing with a 7 year old i was minding, in the supermarket the other day

Violent Autistic Children - Who are we to judge them?
Posted: 8/18/2009 4:06:11 PM
OP, my heart goes out to your friend, i work in autistic services, and i know all too well how families struggle to get appropriate help
the kids i work with cover the whole spectrum, and they all have their issues, we try to equip them with the skills to cope in this world which is so very difficult for them to live in.
yes, these kids do need routine, but, to eventually have an easier, more peaceful life they do need to learn coping skills to deal with change, as long as the basic routine provides security, new things can be introduced.
little things like, instead of going straight to the house from school, we are going to the shop first.....sounds insignificant to most people, to a child with autism, it can cause a total meltdown.
so, we prepare them, bring visuals, a photo of the shop, a shopping bag, and explain the plan.....this applies to any change in routine, including the things that most people wouldnt imagine would cause a problem, like special treats, outings etc, and gradually, we throw in more changes, they do learn to cope, and for some kids the preparation can become less, especially if they are with someone they trust.
lots and lots of exercise is also the key, no only so they sleep well at night lol , but also many exercises are rhythmic, walking, trampolining, swimming, and many kids with autism find this very relaxing.
and, yes, ive had more than my share of bites, bruises, black eyes, etc, there must be consequences for these things, as with any kids, so they learn that this is not acceptable as communication, the usual stuff, removal of priveledges, time out, same as any child, and the behaviour does often get worse before it gets better- none of us like following all the rules!!
communicatin - or lack of i should say- is the cause of so many behaviours, so a huge focus is to give the kids the tools of communication, for some this will be speech, for those already verbal, the skills to calm down and use that speech, for some kids the use of pictures or symbols, some, simply to take your hand and show what they want.
the sensory issues these kids have are sometimes overwhelming, so being aware of noises, smells, crowds, even clothing-the way it feels- can have an impact on behaviour
finding people who can help with all these things is of course the problem, because, realistically, families with kids with very challenging behaviour need all the help they can get, and some time out for themselves!!
ok, id better shut up now! i just feel so strongly that these families should get so much help- things can get better , but it takes a team working bloody hard together

Drunken Violence
Posted: 8/18/2009 5:37:40 AM
Giggly people get knocked, stumbled, their friend gets hurt, glasses are broken, there's blood, some d*ckhead's abusing them and trying to start a fight, a girl's dress is torn and her tit is showing...
giggly people, are not neccessarily at a point where they are unaware of what is happening around them, i always keep a check on whats going on and avoid this sort of thing, as do my friends
So the whole, I'm not violent when I drink thing doesn't really cut it unless you're the only one there or the only one drinking. Ever been sober when some drunk is falling all over you giggling, it's still bloody annoying. This is what the tanked violent drunk sees too, only he already wants to pick fights
this doesnt really cut it either, not everyone who enjoys a few drinks is falling over in any way, those are the people who should probably be heading home, giggly after a few drinks, means just that , not falling all over people...
still assuming some pedestrian's rhetoric or avoidance is a personal insult deserving of an abusive reply
this again is not an example of a happy slightly enebriated person, as i see it , yelling insults, is just abusive! wandering home from the pub after a fun night , if i happen to see anyone, they are likely to get a good night or something but thats it!
