Why does everyone have their IM turned off?

I always thought that the POF IM program was one of the worst chatting programs.
There were bugs, like it was easy to open 10 windows on somebody's computer (don't know if that ever got fixed).
Couldn't toggle between tasks and use it (alt-tab).
Extraordinarily slow... on a bad internet connection, could take 5-10 minutes to open.
One could never tell why it did not open on the other person's screen.
I believe it was susceptible to popup blockers.
Well, the list could go on.
However, I also thought it was a good part of the site.
It is easier to chat with someone than to send e-mails back and forth... and I think people get to know each other better using a chat program than sending e-mails back and forth. Or, if one wants, it is easy to just close the window.
I would think it would be beneficial if Marcus (the admin) would just send out a mass e-mail (or one of those funky polls) with his plans with respect to chatting.
I have seen a website where one could post links to Yahoo/ICQ/AIM/MSN/etc.
I wonder if there would be a way to make some kind of a MS Communicator - Like link to instant messaging where the actual names would be kept anonymous, and it would support multiple clients. Personally, I use the Pidgin IM client which will talk to any other major IM client with no ads, spyware, and etc.

Have you ever paid to use a dating site?

Yep, done that, been there.
I think it is always bogus that 90% of the people on the site either can not read their mail, or can not respond to the messages. And, if you add your e-mail in hopes that someone might read it (and it not be filtered out), then you open yourself open to SPAM.
Free is always best.
Or... I would be willing to pay for performance... Say pay $1000 five years after the ring goes on the finger.

Class action against Yahoo Personals and Match.com for fraud

Interesting discussion,
I think someone is quite opportunistic with this suit... and the ones who will get rich are the leaches.... oh... ummm lawyers.
I certainly agree that Yahoo was much better when it was FREE.
But, Yahoo is also far from being the worst. It's biggest problem is that it doesn't allow a person to know whether the person getting the e-mail can read or reply to the message... and, of course, adding an e-mail address to a mail message opens a person wide to SPAM :P. Changing e-mail messages without letting a person know is equally bad. (of course, POF blocks some of the oddest things).
I detest sites that entice a person to spend a half an hour or so to create a FREE profile on their site... then once the profile is up, one quickly discoveres that it is not FREE at all.
I would certainly agree with a site that would charge a nominal membership fee for initiating contact (provided that was stated on the opening page), but they should ALWAYS allow a person to read and reply to all e-mail messages received. Let's also be reasonable with the fees... maybe $10 / year...
What about some of the sites that individuals have hundreds of different profiles, each in different locations, sometimes with the same photos and descriptions?
What about logging in from an African IP address, but posting a US ad?
Let's see...
thinking about the last time I logged into Yahoo.
There was a group of women with very enticing photos.
Listed as being "local"
But, the text was very short
And, there was almost nothing in the personal attributes section.
These were very predictable, and all were certainly bogus.
There was also a group with NUMBERED accounts... some funky name followed by a number.... most likely they reused the name many times, incrementing the number.
Anyway, I think the suits are somewhat bogus.. but perhaps it is time to reign in the personal sites that use questionable practices.
