GM/Economy

Does it unnerve anyone else that our government is becoming the "owner" of all these businesses that are failing like banks and car companies? Are we headed for a different kind of a government? I'm not accusing, just asking.
Since the government was the only solution to keeping them afloat (no private equity funds stepped forward) I don't have a problem. I am still cautious about the government stake in these businesses, I would like to hear the 'exit strategy'. If there is not a clear exit strategy communicated within 6-12 months after the companies exit bankruptcy, then I will be worried.
I don't see a different kind of government emerging, the constitution hasn't changed. I do see a CHANGe in most Americans view/attitude. America has a good chance to emerge stronger and respected as a global leader if it continues down the path we are being led by this administration...JMHO

I guess I still believe in American workers and their ingenuity. If you believe there are smart hardworking Americans in other American companies, why not in GM.
They are being given one last chance to fix their issues. I hope they do, it would be good for American (not just Michigan) if they do. We should support them in their effort.

Government ownership is not the solution to every problem, but for GM it was the ONLY solution put forward. I did not hear of private equity firms offering to buy and fix GM!
I believe trying to save GM was/is needed (for many of the reasons other posters have cited - US needs a manufacturing base, would have pushed us into a recession, the government was partly at fault for GM's demise -trade agreements/financial mess, etc). The handling of GM to this point makes sense to me.
A few points that people seem to overlook:
1) GM was being mismanaged into the ground, the CEO had to go, he just didn't get it!
2) Unions were not doing enough to save the company (wages and benefit concession, work rules, agreeing to plant closures, etc)
3) Bond holders were wanting to much after equity stakeholders had loss almost all their holdings
4) If what they were building (SUV, trucks, big vehicles, low MPG vehicles) were selling then they wouldn't be in this mess...obviously they do not know their market
5) it took decades for them to get to this point, it will take time (years) for them to get out of it...and decades to get on top - assuming they can survive
I believe the only way fix was for a bankruptcy guided by the government, with the governments money. Again, no private equity funds were offering to do this.
My concern now is that the government needs to define and communicate it's exit strategy after GM is out of bankruptcy. PLEASE, Obama do not make the mistake Bush made in Iraq by not having an exit strategy.

Stretching......the TRUTH!!!!!
Posted:
5/14/2009 5:41:34 AM
Remember there are two types of stretches - dynamic and static. Studies have shown that static stretches decrease muscle performance, I have not seen any studies that state dynamic stretching decreases muscle performance or are bad for you prior to working out.
I dynamic stretch before cardio (stretches specific to the type of cardio I am doing) and static stretch after my workout. Dynamic stretch helps with range of motion and warm up/loosen the muscles before using them. Depending on the intensity level of my workout, I may jog or walk before doing the dynamic stretches.
I do agree with the basic premise of this thread. I shake my head when I see people holding a static stretch for 30-60 seconds before they do their run. It's no wonder so many people get injuries. But let's not confuse dynamic and static stretching as being the same.

How much time (minutes) per week do you exercise ??

^^^^^^
Agree! There is 'activities' - working around the house, golfing, leisurely walk, kayaking for fun, etc. Then there is 'exercise' where one raises their heart rate significantly for cardio purpose or working on increasing muscle strength, etc.
Activities are good for you, that's for sure, better then sitting on the couch all day, but they are not workouts.

Michigan's own little joke thread.
Posted:

Make sure you still have your sense of humor on.
Now that the little girl from the above joke is a Republican, she needs to read the following Republican Party Rules:
1. You have to believe that the nation's current 8-year prosperity was due to the work of Ronald Reagan and George Bush, but yesterday's gasoline prices are all Clinton's fault.
2. You have to believe that those privileged from birth achieve success all on their own.
3. You have to be against all government programs, but expect Social Security checks on time.
4. You have to believe that AIDS victims deserve their disease, but smokers with lung cancer and overweight individuals with heart disease don't deserve theirs.
5. You have to appreciate the power rush that comes with sporting a gun.
6. You have to believe everything Rush Limbaugh says.
7. You have to believe that the agricultural, restaurant, housing and hotel industries can survive without immigrant labor.
8. You have to believe God hates homosexuality, but loves the death penalty.
9. You have to believe society is color-blind and growing up black in America doesn't diminish your opportunities, but you still won't vote for Alan Keyes.
10. You have to believe that pollution is OK as long as it makes a profit.
11. You have to believe in prayer in schools, as long as you don't pray to Allah or Buddha.
12. You have to believe Newt Gingrich and Henry Hyde were really faithful husbands.
13. You have to believe speaking a few Spanish phrases makes you instantly popular in the barrio.
14. You have to believe that only your own teenagers are still virgins.
15. You have to be against government interference in business, until your auto corporation or bank is about to go broke and you beg for a government bail out.
16. You love Jesus and Jesus loves you and, by the way, Jesus shares your hatred for AIDS victims, homosexuals, and President Clinton.
17. You have to believe government has nothing to do with providing police protection, national defense, and building roads.
18. You have to believe a poor, minority student with a disciplinary history and failing grades will be admitted into an elite private school with a $1,000 voucher.

Building endurance, and the benefits of running

Sounds like your body is stressed out from over training. I can 't be sure of this but you have some of the signs for it. Have you looked into a Heart Rate monitor, they are a great aide for training and seeing if you have overtrained.
Look for a running club in your area. Local runners will be able to help you out.

understanding relationships

Today is 'Steak and BJ Day' the counterpart to the lady's Valentine Day.
March 14th is now officially "Steak and Blowjob Day". Simple, effective and self explanatory, this holiday has been created so you ladies finally have a day to show your man how much you care for him.
No cards, no flowers, no special nights on the town; the name of the holiday explains it all, just a steak and a BJ. That's it. Finally, this twin pair of Valentine's Day and Steak and Blowjob Day will usher in a new age of love as men everywhere try THAT much harder in February to ensure a memorable March 14th!
Celebrating both Days are the best way to 'understand a relationship'. When it's a two way street both of you are happy.
Hope everyone is enjoying it!

I was a 6 day a week runner (30+ miles) for years, until all the mileage starting catching up with me. Now I cross train (swim, bike, weights) 6 days a week. While my running has been cut back to 3x a week (15 - 24 miles) I still love it. Running will always be my favorite cardio, but my knees and hips thank me that I now cross train. I've been injury free for 5 years. Triathlons Rule!!!!!!!!

What is wrong with being an Atheist??
Posted:
3/10/2009 5:16:45 AM
Atheists BELIEVE deities DO NOT exist. (key word here is BELIEVE)
Religions BELIEVE deities DO exist. (again, key word here is BELIEVE)
Agnostics have not seen proof, or disproof, of deities and are uncommittal on the topic.
It is ALL about 'belief', why is that so hard to understand! Religions and Atheist have NO scientific FACT of their view...it is a BELIEF. It's fine to BELIEVE in something, but that does not make it a FACT. Nor does that make the person who has a different BELIEF then you wrong, or a bad person, or immoral, etc. They just have a different BELIEF and we should all respect their BELIEF (until they try to shove it down your throat, then by all means let them know).
And...showing respect to another or living your life as a 'good' person HAS NOTHING to do with being religious or not. It just about the type of person you are.

Hospitals prepare for growing ranks of obese

The only ones who have any right or reason to blame anyone but themselves are small children who are forced to "clean their plate", or have parents who make bad choices for them at restaurants and grocery stores.
I would add the small percent of the population that suffer from thyroid conditions or are on meds for chemo, etc. The majority of adults are doomed to failure due to lack of conviction to make the healthy changes in their lifestyle - that is their right.
I get tired of hearing them whine that every diet they went on only worked for awhile then they gained it back, or the gym they joined worked for awhile, etc. These are b*llsh$t excuses. Diets never work...duh!!!! Only a permanent change to your eating habits work over time - lower calories in then calories you burn, and more nutritious foods. Exercise only works if you do it the rest of your life...not just for 30 days after New Years Day.
People don't want to admit failure, so it's always the diets fault, or an injury caused me to lose interest, etc... That's why hospitals have to buy larger gurneys and wheel chairs, commercial airlines have to carry seat belt extensions, etc.
I truly feel sorry for the kids, they didn't ask to be overfed and out of shape, that's what their parents are teaching them...that is the sad part of it!

Gastric Bypass Experiences?
Posted:
3/3/2009 5:02:05 PM
Results of gastroplasty (stomach stapling) and gastric banding - that is, restrictive surgeries - typically show an average loss of 50-60 percent of excess body weight at 12 months, followed by a slow weight gain thereafter. Five years after the operation, only 50 percent of patients have successfully kept the weight off, and at 10 years, as few as 26 percent of patients report successful weight maintenance. Recent studies show that lap-band bariatric operations can extend the weight loss over 2 to 3 years.
Unless the person changes their lifestyle gastric bypass is not the silver bullet, just a temporary solution.
There is no better way to lose weight than diet and exercise. NONE! You can argue all you want but there is no denying fact. Gastric bypass is not the way to lose weight. what it takes is a lifestyle change that concentrates on diet, exercise and an active lifestyle.
Very true, but people don't want to hear that. They rather pay money for a diet book, or a diet program or gastric bypass. When what is required is a lifestyle change. If you don't commit to a lifestyle change in what you eat and daily exercise, you are doomed no matter what diet program you throw your money at. The simple free solution is count your calories and get off your butt and walk everyday.

When you say you "don't know" (agnosticism), it more than implies that you don't/can't believe.
Flawed logic. It still means simply that 'we don't know', is that too hard to comprehend.
Symantics. People hate me pointing this out, because agnostics HATE being called an atheist. lol
You can bend and twist words all you want but it still doesn't make agnostics atheists. .. and...I don't hate you for labeling me as something I am not. But I would suggest a college class in logic.

Very well-thought-out reply there. Agnosticism as I understand it is not an implication of a lack of belief in a god - neither is it in support of the concept OF a 'supreme being'. Agnostics are intelligent enough to realize that there has never at any point in recorded history been any concrete indisputeable evidence of the existence of a god. However, there is equally no proof that there ISNT one, so we simply try to live our lives as the best sort of person we can be. It doesnt matter then _which_ side may be right - if you have lived your life as a sincerely good person, no one can fault your beliefs (or lack thereof) or ask more of you.

i know people who don't have a pot to piss in and weigh 400 pounds, wonder how they manage to buy all that food
Doesn't take all that much food to get fat if you're lazy. Also the really horrible food is usually the cheapest!
So true! Just add one Large Coke (32 oz.) from McDonalds to your daily intake and you will gain ~32 lbs a year. If you weight 150 lbs you can get to 400 lbs in about 8 years (or 6 years if your prefer the $1 double cheeseburger), if diabetes or heart disease doesn't finish you first.
Maybe they should tax fast food....

It's about 'time'..................mine, AND yours!
Posted:

I agree it can feel like you are being disrespected if you get stood up or someone is really late. For me it depends on the friend, the situation, and their reason (if they offer one). [Professional or work meetings are a whole different discussion]
I find the best way to treat a late arriving friend is to give a reasonable amount of time and then go on with whatever I want to do (which may mean waiting, or leaving, or adjusting my plans). Life's to short to get bent out of shape about it. I have a few friends that are usually run late, I do not see it as them being disrespectful to me, heck they are that way to everyone. Some people just suck at time management, just as some of us are bad at math or telling jokes.
When I am running late the friend I am meeting plays a role in how I deal with it. Think about this - if friends often do not call you when they are running late, ask yourself how did you respond to their last call when they were running late, were you rude and/or annoyed with them, maybe that is why they don't call. If I am going to get attitude when I call, then I DON'T CALL , I figure I'll just wait until I get there and deal with their attitude then. Just a thought, people often act based on how others respond to them.

Taxes on cigarettes, and other sin taxes, are unfair. Heck, all taxes are unfair. We know better how to spend our money then the government. All the taxes from our hard earn money goes to support people that just want the government to do everything for them. I say end all the taxes and have people be accountable again...if you lose your job go back to your parents or family to take care of you, if your house is on fire put it out yourself, someone stealing from you stop them yourself, buy your medicine wherever you want who should tell you if it's safe or good for you, drive where ever you want and at whatever speed you want it's your right.......

Dont Get Me Started Obama
Posted:
2/16/2009 8:11:03 AM
It's way too early to judge Obama's effectiveness as a President, though a good tme to judge bush's ineffectiveness (damn I just can't help myself..LOL).
I see any bashing or over zealous support of Obama's actions to date as just pre-existing love or hate for the man. IT'S TOO EARLY TO JUDGE. But it's not too early to opine on how you would have handled the economic situation or you thoughts on his actions.
I have always been of the opinion that taking some form of action to fix a problem is better then not doing anything at all. Especially if you are open to changing course when you see what is working ,and what is not working , with your actions taken to date. Too often people use 'needing more time to look at the problem' as an excuse for doing nothing. So I applaud him for taking actions so quickly.
I do shake my head at some stuff on here:
We could have survived pretty well if only the housing bubble burst, but when the media started in with "OH NO WE'RE ALL GOING BACK TO HOOVERVILLES!"
...and the U.S. would have avoided the Great Depression if the media didn't keep harping about the stock market crash in 1929, the 27% unemployment numbers and terrible ecomony.
Lying to the people and saying that the roughly 10% of the bill that is job creating will make a bunch of jobs and save the country is utterly shameful of our President.
...the Stimulus bill has not been signed let alone been implemented. How can you unequivocally state that he lied and it did not provide jobs. Me...I'll wait to see it's impact in the next 6 months, even better yet see how things are 1 year from now after he can implement the stimulus bill, take actions on housing foreclosures, address the financial market issues, the automotive industry, Afghanistan, long term energy plan, Iraq, etc. Boy, the man has a lot on his plate, thank you bush!

Diet/Matobolisum Delemma
Posted:

For someone 6' 0" tall , 800 calories is too few calories to provide your body with the nutrients it needs while keeping it out of fat storage mode. Add the fact that you are burning 400+ calories exercise and you are really stressing your body.
When you cut back on calories too much, your body will protect itself from starvation. It will begin hording every calorie it can and storing fat because it doesn't want to starve to death. Hence your weight gain while subsisting on only 800 calories.
When your body senses starvation your metabolism will slow down in an effort to conserve and might even burn muscle long before it burns fat. You may lose weight but it will be muscle weight and not fat, I doubt this is what you are striving for. When this happens, you'll find that work outs become harder, may start getting small nagging muscle injuries, feel fatigued and exhausted all the time, and you may find it more difficult to sleep.
Try adding 300-400 calories to your diet. You should start to lose weight again and feel better.

Obama is in office and look at the shape of America…
- we’re still at war in Iraq (has he found the WMDs yet?)
- the $10.4 trillion deficit hasn't been paid down
- banking fiasco of past eight years hasn’t been fixed, and he is giving them another $350 billion
- U.S. automakers are still hurting and laying people off
- unemployment is still over 7%
Geez, he’s been in office for 23 days…why aren’t all America’s issues fixed. The nerve of him.
To quote a great American President:
'If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.'

Is there a Double Standard?
Posted:
1/30/2009 6:50:26 AM
After reading the OP and his follow up, I for the life of me can not see why this thread was ever opened.
No double standard, conservative talking heads (hannity, limbaugh) attack him more, liberal talking heads (olbermann) attack less, mainstream news media is asking questions about his actions (stimulus package, appointees, signing abortion bill without media flair around it , why he did not have media present for second swearing in, etc).
Pretty balanced reporting from the main stream media so far. And no surprise with limbaugh's "I hope he fails" remark - it's all about entertainment for him, he should be on E NEWS and not FAUX NOISE.
Some people must have to accept the fact that the last president deserved all the negative press and scrutinization due to his inept policies and bad judgements. He got what he deserved, live with it! Starting threads like this is BS!

Back to the OP ---
It's comes back to the parents. Children learn from their parents, be it eating or respect to others or being active or smoking or manners or education, etc. Children have no options in their early years but what their parents give them. Options become available as they grow older but the parents are the main influence. 'Nurture' is more influential then 'Nature' when it comes to obesity.
An obese child (barring a medical issue i.e. thyroid) is the fault of the parent. I too shake my head and feel sorry when I see an obese child with their obese parents. I wish they had healthier parents, the child is basically doomed for life. Poor kids, and the government does not have much say in it.

What is your idea of the PERFECT Valentine's Day date?
Posted:

No snow on the ground, temperature in the 70's and sunny...that would be a PERFECT Valentine's Day.
Valentine's Day facts
- ~85% of Valentine's Day cards are bought by women....... NO SURPRISE!
- 1980’s the diamond industry started to promote Valentines Day as a holiday to gift fine jewelry to women....... WHAT A SHOCK!
- First Valentine card in America dates back to 1847. Give credit, or blame, to Esther Howland for bringing over the English custom and starting the Valentines Day card industry.
It’s no wonder that women are more likely to place a stronger affection to Valentines Day then men.

Why should there be more redistribution of wealth?

LOL...capitalism rewards greed and greed alone. It believes private citizens know best how to treat land, labor and capital. I surely do not trust Exxon (Valdez), Weyerhaeuser and Monsanto with our environmental (land, air, and water) laws, or WalMart, Coal Mine Companies (black lung) or Union Carbide (asbestos) with our Labor laws or Citibank, Bank of America, or Wall Street with our banking laws.
Run amok capitalsim is good for a few and bad for the other 90% of society. There needs to be a strong middle class protected by strong government regulation that protect societies rights. Business and Individuals can thrive together, but not under unabashed Capitalism or Socialism or Communism.

Cardio and Weight training
Posted:
1/26/2009 6:27:08 AM
^^^^ setting weight goals are good to mark progress, but not good for determining your end goal. If you make long term changes to your eating habits and your exercise routine, your body will settle at a level based on them. If where it ends up is not where you want to be then you need to alter your eating and exercise routine again.
OP - as stated in previous posts a good suggestion is to use a moderate cardio workout for 5 minutes to warm up the muscles, followed by weight training and finish with your cardio routine for the day. This assumes you are doing both in the same gym session -should help prevent injuries and burn the most fat calories.
If you are doing them in different workout sessions, then you need to try and find what works best for you. I've found personally that on cardio and lower body weight training days I do my cardio in the morning and lower body weight training in the evening (if I do it the other way my cardio workout suffers and cardio workouts override weight training in my exercise goals). If it's upper body weights the order doesn't matter for me so I do whatever is most convenient.

International Funding

There are restrictions that should be part of U.S. aide - humanitarian, international law, child labor, etc. But abortion should not be one of them. The ban targeted organizations that provided abortion services or counseling, if effect Reagan and bush were pushing their ideologue on the organizations. The removal of the ban does not require organizations to provide abortion services or counseling, we are not pushing an abortion agenda or idealogue. It puts us on the side of trying to help International organizations without unnecessary strings attached. Puts the U.S. in better light worldwide (IMO).
The ban was meant to influence, to strong arm, organizations to stop providing abortion service and cousnseling...i.e. Reagan and bush were pushing their ideology on organizations (since abortion services and counseling is legal in the U.S.).
<div class='quote'> It's clear that you don't intend to accept any legitimate answer that doesn't agree with what you've already concluded for yourself. This game is over for me.
I have to agree - after going back a reading all the OP posts. Game over here too....

Prior to Reagan no ban, Reagan adds abortion ban, Clinton removes ban, Bush add ban back, Obama removes ban. Why would anyone be surprised. I am glad they removed the ban, since abortion is legal here why should we use our International Aid dollars to punish nations that allow them too.

Medical Insurance for all

^^^ or have those that cherish their cigs, McD's and Jim Beam to excess pay more for their insurance. Empower doctors to prescribe lifestyle changes to fix patients health issues ,and if they don't follow them allow the doctor to stop treating them, since they are going against medical advice, without fear of a malpractice case.

Medical Insurance for all

As unhealthy of a nation (U.S.A) we are, medical insurance for all would eventually bankrupt us. The Biggest Loser (TV Show) showed how much medication some of them were taking at the start of the show, some would be paying $750,000 - $1,000, 000 worth of medication over the next 20 - 30 years if they did not lose the weight. After losing 30-40 pounds some were off all the medications or down to 1 medication.
Any Universal Health Care plan must come with personal responsibility...
Diabetes (diet related) medical cost is over ~$100 billion a year.
Cigarette smoking costs ~$70 billion plus a year in medical costs.
Alcohol costs ~$50 billion a year.
With an annual U.S. Health Care cost of ~$2 trillion, reducing it by ~$250 billion is a huge savings , some research shows that it could be reduced up to 40% by not smoking, eating better, increased activity, etc.
When people talk about how expensive health care is, most need only look in the mirror to see why. Problem is, they don't want to admit they are part of the problem, so politicians can't create a good health care solution. Oh well, the pharmaceuticals win again.

Getting those SIX-PACK abs
Posted:

but in the end just like the original poster said, you can have the best abs in the world but if you eating junk food on daily basis you will never see them.
No argument there or with the OP about the importance of eating healthy. Too many Resolution'ers think going to the gym is the answer for dropping 20+ pounds of fat, when the real answer is eating less calories. No wonder they stop going after 2-3 weeks.

Getting those SIX-PACK abs

I exercise regularly but no matter how much you exercise your diet will always be the center of your workout. You can't workout and stop at McD's on the way home because you just negated your efforts. Eat plenty of fruit, high protein, low carb foods and be sure to mix it up. Get creative with your diet and you'll be amazed at the results.
I agree that one must eat healthy (nutritional food, carb/protein/fat ratio, etc) and reduce calorie intake to get one's body fat low enough for your abs to show. But, the person that is just trying to lose fat (weight) for swimsuit season, while they can't eat every meal at McD's, or even eat there everyday, I don't see where eating there once in a while will negate all their effort.
I may be wrong, and would love to hear about research that proves it, but I can't help think that one meal will not ruin all of your efforts. If the rest of the day, or the days before and after, are filled with protein, carbs, fats to keep the McD's meal in balance for your goals, why can't you eat it. I would say the same thing about a high calorie/fat dessert, or fried chicken, or pizza, etc. To me it's about what else you eat and when you eat it.
I believe it's banishment of foods (i.e. desserts, pizza, McD's, etc) that is the main reason why people fail to make long term substainable changes in their diets.
And yes, 6-pak abs is all about getting your body fat percent low so they can show through. Great look, but doesn't help me attain my goals in endurance events.

Michigan is freakin` Cold!
Posted:

2008 sure has felt colder in Michigan, it's been a few years since we've had snow on the ground for such a long time (since Thanksgiving).
But on global warming - people tend to confuse weather with climate. Weather is what happens to us locally, and from year to year. Climate is the larger scale -- the whole world -- and the longer term. Even if 2008 happens to be colder than 2007, it still will rank as the 10th warmest year on record (climatewise).

Not to sound redundant...but go to a 'running shoe' store. Nike sells Nike, they do not sell the best shoe for you. Maybe Nike is the best, but there are many many others to chose from...and IMHO much much better choices then Nike. You should bring a pair of your old running shoes so they can see where you tend to wear your shoes down. They will take a look at how you walk in them and ask questions about your kind of training mileage, what kind of surface you run on (trails, roads, etc.), and more.
If you are going to use running as your primary exercise, it is best to invest wisely in good shoes that are best for your feet. JMO
BTW - some great posts on proper running form which is good advice to prevent future injuries, and advice on stretching. I would add a great stretch is to stand on a stair with the ball of your feet and let your heel sink below the stair to stretch the foot and then stand up on you toes to stretch the other way.

How do you stay motivated
Posted:
1/21/2009 5:59:17 AM
Congrats OP on your success to date.
When you don't feel like exercising, or eating right, think back to how hard it was to get to where you are right now. Do you want to backslide and start all over. It's much easier to stay in shape then get into shape. That helps keep me going!
Also, having a realistic plan that recognizes that you will plateau and that you will start losing less weight per week as you thin down. It's easy to lose 3-5 pounds in a week when you weigh 250, but much harder when you weigh 180. Keep it realistic, don't set yourself up for failure.
