the best is the scanned pics women put up of themselves and a guy.... but the guy's face is violently scratched off with a knife or other sharp instrument. haha. makes me wonder if they ever found the body.

i have a house rule regarding first dates/meetings on here. if you wait till the last minute to bail after we have made plans... or if you dont show altogether... then no second chance. i dont get upset, i just move on.

my time is important and my free time is even more valuable to me. i assume it is for you too.

How to you dress for your first meeting
Posted: 9/8/2009 5:15:45 PM
i kinna just wear what i usually wear day to day. im not a suit and tie guy at all. i would think that if i wore something out of the ordinary for a first date then she might find what i wear in the coming weeks not to her liking.

i guess my point is that i try to be me in my profile and on the first meet and if that doesnt work, it certainly wont work for the second date and thereafter.

someone out there has to be enamoured with a bit of facial hair, skater shoes and a pair of camo Abercrombie shorts.... here's hoping.

i like to clip stories like this from papers and then i put them in a frame and hang them in one room of my home.

then when i have a POF date over and she calls me a freak... i show her the clippings in the room and point out that, relatively-speaking, i am quite normal.

i can get behind any sport.... mens or womens. well, except for the two-man skeleton. thats just wrong!

however... as others have said... do what it takes to get recognized. pay your dues and have your two world championships. but as we have seen with softball, even doing that is not a guarantee of continued inclusion in the Games.

but. i am also a fan of going to movies. there have been movies that have had me on the edge of my seat and others i have actually walked out on halfway thru.

im not walking out on the oilers after this season. but.... i do think i should have waited till they came out as a rental, if you catch my meaning.

Memories growing up
Posted: 3/27/2009 11:22:53 PM
well... i was an army brat. i have different memories:

- playing cowboys and indians with discarded surplus bazooka tubes
- camo sleeping bags... well, everything we owned was green.
- "C" rations for school lunch... the chiclets were ok.
- dressing up in dads combat fatigues for halloween, then realizing all the other kids on the street are wearing the same costume
- wore spent bullet shell belts WAAAAAY before it was cool
- every kid had a combat knife/bayonette instead of a swiss army knife
- called dad by his rank, not his name
- hated all russians
- hide and seek is way cooler wearing camo netting and green grease face paint... games could last for days.

:)

typically i will add you to my favs list...

...then i will download all of your pics and print them out. i then cut out your face and attach it to a tiny cardboard body and dress you in cut-out-doll clothing of my choosing. you are then placed on a shelf along with my other "favs"... dozens upon dozens. on my "good days" i will bring a few of you down from the shelf and we will sit around a small table and have tea and biscuits and talk until the wee hours of the morning.

sigh. good times.

the OP asked for input on the topic in general and i gave my opinion. i wasnt addressing this specific event and the "hissy fit" as i wasnt there. and even tho i am not really into all the photo taking, i also dont make a big deal about it or stick my hand up in front of my face. of course, if you put a pic of yourself holding up a beer in your profile, then i would expect that you dont mind people taking pics of you in bars or at parties.

but my point remains, not all people like it... so just be mindful of that. it sounds like the OP was asking permission and gladly deleting any photos that were unwanted. but not all are this courteous.

as for the "stay home" comments.... im not gonna stay home and be a hermit just because i am annoyed by photo taking.... for the same reason i wont stay home because i hate slow service in a bar or just to ensure that i wont be forced to listen to "walking on sunshine" by katrina and the waves on the off-chance that a dj has poor taste in music.

if the question is just about legality.. i dont know. i suppose if it is your thing to get snap-happy at events then you will be able to find some way to justify it. i know the ones who make it their living taking pics of celebs in public (and private) dont see themselves as intrusive and annoying.

but, personally... i think those people who run around POF events taking pics of everybody to be exactly that... intrusive and annoying.

and i know others are totally fine with it and even ham it up for the cameras. so that being said, if you are gonna be talking photos of everyone, expect that some wont like it at all. regardless of your right to do it and regardless of whether the majority feels it is ok.

Do you or don't you ...?????????????????????
Posted: 3/21/2009 2:40:13 PM
when i first got out on my own again i had a hard time being home on a friday night. i was restless and felt i needed to be doing something or out on a date.

a few years later i am totally cool being home alone on a friday or a saturday night, ordering in chinese and watching a movie. or logging on to POF, saying hi to a cutie or posting here with you goofs.

so yeah, i suppose there are others out there who are comfy with being home alone on a weekend evening and i dont discount them one bit for doing so.

wow. we need a real scandal so we remember what it feels like. this gaff that leads to "worries" is pretty weak, in my opinion. certainly not worthy of an uproar.

the nortel bungle didnt rate this much thread space. a company that dropped from $120ish a share to pennies while they admitted to accounting irregularities. and no one went to jail.

i suggest yall forget about cbc and globe and mail and go watch cnn for some real meat and potatos. those folks south of the border really know how to whip up a good, downhome scandal.

more recently than 1812....

On June 20, 1942, the Japanese submarine I-26, under the command of Yokota Minoru, fired 25-30 rounds of 5.5" shells at the Estevan Point lighthouse on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, but failed to hit its target. This marked the first enemy shelling of Canadian soil since the War of 1812. Though no casualties were reported, the subsequent decision to turn off the lights of outer stations was disastrous for shipping activity.

In November, the German U-518 sank two iron ore freighters and damaged another off Bell Island in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, en route to the Gaspé Peninsula where, despite an attack by a Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft, it successfully landed a spy, Werner von Janowski, at New Carlisle, Quebec on November 9, 1942.

Although not crippling to the Canadian war effort, given the country's rail network to the east coast ports, but possibly more destructive to the morale of the Canadian public, was the Battle of the St. Lawrence, when U-boats began to attack domestic coastal shipping along Canada's east coast in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf of St. Lawrence from spring 1942 through to the end of the shipping season in late fall 1944.

Three significant attacks took place in 1942 when German U-boats attacked four iron ore carriers serving the DOSCO iron mine at Wabana on Bell Island in Newfoundland's Conception Bay. The ships S.S. Saganaga and the S.S. Lord Strathcona were sunk by U-513 on September 5, 1942, while the S.S. Rosecastle and P.L.M 27 were sunk by U-518 on November 2 with the loss of 69 lives. However, one of the most dramatic incidents of the attack occurred after the sinkings when the submarine fired a torpedo that missed its target, the 3000 ton collier Anna T, and struck the DOSCO loading pier and exploded. As a result of the torpedo missing its target, Bell Island became the only location in North America to be subject to direct attack by German forces during World War II. On October 14, 1942, the Newfoundland Railway ferry SS Caribou was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-69 and sunk in the Cabot Strait south of Port aux Basques. Caribou was carrying 45 crew and 206 civilian and military passengers. 137 lost their lives, many of them Newfoundlanders.

yes, i can google.

On a lighter note, as Canadians, we have been subjected to visual bombardment from south of the border on many occasions. The Facts of Life, an American sitcom that originally ran on the NBC television network from August 24, 1979 to September 13, 1988, was forced upon us by a nation clearly intent on our destuction.

i grew up in a military family and spent my entire childhood living on bases. for the most part, throughout the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties i cant remember too many conflicts that we were involved with. perhaps some peacekeeping posts... but nothing on the scale of what we have seen in the past ten years or so.

fast forward to last year. my son had a bantam hockey game against st. albert, but for whatever reason, the game was scheduled on the base at edmonton garrison's arena. we won the game and i had an arena hot dog and all was right in the world. i was in a great mood. however, when we were leaving i passed by the open door to another dressing room filled with younger players... base kids, about 6 or 7 years old perhaps. although i just glanced in quickly as i passed the door, something struck me as being a bit off but i couldnt put my finger on it. it wasnt until i got to my car that i realized what seemed strange.... the room was filled with young boys and their mothers. not their fathers. its usually the fathers who tie the skates. and then it hit me... their dads were probably all over in afghanistan.

i was swept with emotion and my eyes teared up. i dont know why it was such a powerful moment but it was. my father had always been there at my games. he came home to us everynight and got up the next morning and put on his uniform and did his job. but he never had to make the sacrifice that these men, and many women also, are making for us now. took a fatherless hockey dressing room for me to see that. and for that, i am very grateful. thank you.

Telephone Solicitation (aka Phone Whoring)
Posted: 3/14/2009 12:05:42 PM
have some fun with them....

- learn a few phrases in an obscure eastern-european language... and repeat them over and over. or hire a person from an obscure eastern european country to answer your phone.

- try to get them to talk dirty to you.

- whatever they are selling ask for half off. or try to order a pizza. or tell them you can guess where they are calling from by their accent. here's a hint: its either india, kentucky or sydney, nova scotia.

- if they are from a credit card company, tell them stores cut up both of your other cards the day before and you would simply die for another one.

- ask them how they got the number and tell them you are a phone solicitor too and this is soooo bizarre. then try to sell them something. like knives. or sham-wows!

Conquering Fear

things i fear:

heights... but not ladder heights... like really high balconies or being near glass windows that go to the floor in tall hotels, etc

taxes

coffee dates, ugh.

sharks with mouths in the front as opposed to the bottom... when i snork, i hate turning my back to the ocean.

the dark. and ghosts. or dead people underwater. thats always creepy.

but as to facing your fears or overcoming them. look.... im 45. im done changing. its all part of who i am.

From an online blog:
Lions, and tigers, and a gay guy - oh my!
There was this organization set up on a street corner this weekend in Oklahoma City collecting donations to "save the tigers." Basically they do a magic show with lions and tigers, and for a $25 donation, you can sit and play with baby tigers and lions. I decided that my husband and I should do it because how often are we really going to get to play with tigers and lions? I mean really? The lion was super sleepy and kept falling asleep, and the tigers kept whining like little kittens. Apparently all baby tigers whine like crazy, according to the flamingly gay tiger trainer. We paid $20 more to get our photo taken with one of the baby tigers. Way way too pricey for a photo, but, like I said, when are we going to get to play with them again?

From LGBTCareerLink, an "out & equal" gay/lesbian resume posting site, a resume submitted by a gentleman who lists the follow previous job experience:
6/2004 – 2006: Consultant: Public Relations, Assistant Tiger Trainer -Adams Angells-FL
Responsible for care, conditioning and training of exotics and rescues. Managed compound volunteers when onsite. Assisted with preliminary research for acquiring non-profit status and educational outreach. Landmark Films: BBC Documentary "Extreme Pets", Production liaison, Assistant Tiger Trainer. The Globe: Tiger Live Event Coordinator.

ill tell you what i WILL pay $6 a month for. a premium feature that lets you send anyone of your choosing to a "not interested" file, similar to a blocked file.

so, for whatever reason you have.... if they were rude, unresponsive, they want someone taller or shorter or whatever... you can click the button and they go to that file, never to be seen again on your searches or across the top of your screen.

set that up and i will be the first in line with my credit card out.

on the subject of interests... yes, of course i agree, sambo.

thats why i am pointing it out as an obstactle. i cant tell you how many profiles i read where the person lists their interests and qualities and then goes on the state that these same interests and qualities are required in a prospective mate.

i am this and this and you must be this and this. i do this and you must do the same.

i can tell you this, when the time comes to be with someone, i am praying that they are not JUST LIKE ME!
