Thanks for the response, but this is so "highschool." I wanted to share a musician's site, to show what I like. And it's not like such silly filters can't be overcome. Could I have a hall pass?

"myspace"

I may have run into a glitch in your system. When I have tried to tell someone about a "my space" page, if I use the "my space" as one word, the system changes it to "spam." It directs you to the page for the meat manufacturer, so it's no big deal, except that it's not what I wanted to show the person.
Wonder if anyone else has had this problem. Try it: myspace. If it works here, maybe it's only in email messages that "my space" as one word (without the space between my and space) turns into "spam."

Creating a new word?

Years ago, Rich Hall produced "Sniglets" on an HBO show. He compiled them into books. Some were corny, but most were brilliant. I don't think the original poster was claiming to be brilliant or historic. He was just making a joke. Geez, cut him some slack.
I was drawn to this thread because I once wrote some brochures for a Realtor. The houses were very pricey, so I used rather lofty language--and ended up coining a few words, myself. But they came off very naturally, and I don't think the client ever knew that I was making up words. What fun.

WHY other "religion"?
Posted:
10/27/2008 8:45:10 AM
When we check our "religion," there are a number of options. One is "OTHER," but when our profiles appear, it comes up as "Religion: Other Religion."
That's not really correct. When I saw the listings, I saw that none of them applied to me, so I put "other." That really DOES describe me. However, "other religion" does not.
When you say "Other religion,' it means belonging to an organized religion, but just not listed here. But I don't belong to an organized religion, yet, I am not "non-religious."
There are many beliefs that don't fit the categories, such as "atheist" a firm belief, and therefore NOT "non-religious." People who are atheists BELIEVE there is no God, but it is a belief system--"other," but not "other religion," and not "non-religious," since the person has clear beliefs.
There's also "agnostic," which usually means that a person is, perhaps, burned out on specific religion, but is not really "non-religious."
"Secular" or "humanist" are beliefs, but are not really "non-religious," and are also not "other religion."
I would like to see the profiles state "Religion: other," (which is what we check) rather than "Religion: Other Religion," which really means something completely different.

Is Unrequited Love still Real Love?
Posted:
10/4/2008 8:05:49 AM
Love is giving. I think that's your answer. So, yeah, it's still love.
Seems that nearly every relationship involves one who is "in love" and one who is--not so much. I think the trick is to reveal yourself at a rate that is commensurate with your partner's comfort level.
To seem "madly in love" too soon can be intimidating, and can scare them off. And it hurts so much to have blown something that seemed to hold such promise--just because you tried too hard.

Don't Believe People Really Want to Meet
Posted:
10/3/2008 6:14:15 AM
BT, you have to have some patience. You've only been on here for a little over a month and you say you've ALREADY met a "couple of nice people." How many "nice people" have you met otherwise??
I've been on here for a little over a year, and I can't say I've met anyone here who is any more rude or inconsiderate than anyone you'd meet anywhere. But Fish does give you the opportunity to meet more people than you can on the street. And certainly more than on the pay sites, which I found were a total bust.
I would say this: I would LOVE to date a lot, meet a lot of people, have a lot of fun. But I don't, because I have responsibilities. It's very frustrating to have to "take care of business" instead of run around having fun. BUT--wouldn't you really rather have a friend and partner who takes responsibilities seriously, instead of a playboy who will want you to pay his bills?

Rice Cookers
Posted:
9/23/2008 11:45:08 AM
I have two rice cookers. I like that you can just fill 'em and forget 'em. One is electric. Turns itself off when ready, but there's also a "warm" setting.
The other one is even better. It's a plastic pressure cooker. Load it up. Set the microwave for ten minutes. Then forget it and fix the rest of the meal. I find that 1-1/2 cup water per cup of rice works very well.
You can find great stuff like this really cheap at garage sales. People get them as gifts and just don't bother to try them, so they're usually brand new--for ten or 20% of new cost. GREAT way to try kitchen "toys."

WAIT! Instead of chronological age, Fish could be even MORE superficial:
you could put BUST sizes on women's pictures and appendage LENGTH numbers on men's photos!!

If I think of anything else that's more insulting to our intelligence than the new "prison numbers" on thumbnails, I'll let ya know.

I have never seen or heard any desperate need for chronological age on the thumbnails--before it was sprung on us.
Moderator said:
This request, to show more information on the thumbnails has been voiced numerous times - not one vote against in all the prior thread suggestions that I can recall.
That's like saying, people want more info on their license plate, so we put your home address on it. Nobody would voice opposition, because it's a "you're kidding, right?" issue. And since you brought it up, I WOULD like to have a vote on this
Besides, putting a number on a face is redundant--it's NOT "adding information." The thumbnails are ALREADY limited to a narrow age range.
If you feel you HAVE to put words or numbers on a thumbnail, I would vote for STATE OR PROVINCE. I click a few faces, and suddenly, I'm looking at someone from Nevada or Nova Scotia. That would be more helpful and much more important/relevant information. I don't need someone in my face screaming a chronological age, but I would like to know if someone lives a thousand miles away.
You probably won't hear many other protests, because who would think to log a protest in a thread that says, "gee-willikers, this is great!" And if one doesn't see this one and starts his own, the thread is shut down and posts die. Wouldn't it be more honest to MOVE the posts to the supposedly "relevant" thread, instead of killing the dissent??
When I see a picture and ONLY the age number, I really think, cripes, how shallow and superficial CAN we become?? Oh, wait, we're there.

Seems POF is falling more and more and more into promoting subjectivity lately instead of helping to promote looking more deeply into each other....what a great shame!

This is the worst kind of age discrimination.
Many women look and THINK younger than they are. Putting the age on the thumbnail picture causes automatic rejection of those who are younger than their chronological age.
Look at the pictures! I've seen many women who look MUCH younger than their age, and then look at their "about me," and you'll see that they're even younger than that!
All we see in the thumbnails now is a face and number. Could it BE more superficial than that?? Besides, The system already limits the thumbnails by age, so using the number is not necessary.
This is NOT helpful. It's harmful.

Ages on Thumbnails
[CLOSED Thread]
Posted:

I don't like 'em. Putting ages on thumbnails is unnecessary. The system already limits the thumbnails by age. Besides, age is just a number. Many women look and THINK younger than we are. Putting the age on the thumbnail picture will cause rejection of those who are younger than their chronological age.
Look at the pictures! I've seen many women who look MUCH younger than their age, and then look at their "about me," and you'll see that they're even younger than that! But if the first thing you see is their chronological age, it causes age prejudice and discrimination.
The number is just NOT a reliable way to decide who is "younger" and putting it so prominently is not fair to the young at heart. Age should NOT be the ONLY thing that goes with the first impression.

Is a Regulatory Body For Gas Prices a Solution?
Posted:
9/14/2008 2:59:27 AM
Right. An intelligent friend of mine casually complained about gas prices going up "because of the hurricane." I replied that she has swallowed the propaganda. We are conditioned to think that prices go up because of natural causes. That way, nobody is to blame.
You have to "follow the money," as they used to say during Watergate.
At one end of the process, you have a well in the dirt. It's pumping oil. The oil goes into barrels and is sold. The people who own the land are paid for the oil. But the price really has nothing at all to do with supply and demand. Prices are set by speculators who are "willing to pay a price." As long as they think people will believe that "hurricanes cause gas prices to rise," they are willing to bid up the price. And when they do, someone else buys into it and pays even more. That's how they get their money.
Meanwhile, the oil companies LOVE when speculators go nuts, because they get paid MORE when the price goes up. Their profits are based on a percentage of the take, so they LOVE to see the price go through the roof.
The government here gets a cut of the action, too, but it's based on volume sold, not price. So when the price goes up, and we can't afford to drive as much, the government actually earns LESS money in taxes. And that's assuming some demagogue hasn't succeeded in cutting taxes further. That means highway workers lose jobs and your roads get worse and worse. While oil price speculators and oil company stock owners (speculators) are getting filthy rich.
In the old days, we had what we called "regulators." The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) required fairness in broadcasting, as well as a limit to how much of our communications could be owned by a tiny handful of people. There was also a requirement that advertising had to have at least SOME relationship to truth. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulated what could be said about drugs and what went onto our plate. The Federal Trade Commission regulated how unsafe and unreliable products could be.
These days, they have the power of alphabet soup. Their purpose is to encourage maximum profits for the few--and good luck to you. Buyer beware, because nobody is really watching out for you anymore.
Don't know how things go in Canada, but here in the States, individuals are here to be exploited, and "regulation" is just a term used in sports.

Talking to someone who seems overly comfortable with you....BEFORE even meeting

OP: Wishful thinking. Attempt at self-fulfilling prophecy. Confidence.
On the one hand, he's hoping if he is "familiar" with you, then maybe you will be "familiar" with him. May not even be a conscious thing.
Also, of course, as you say, you like it. We all like to be with someone who is confident--who knows what he/she wants. If that person is so convinced that he/she wants US, well, that's gratifying.
I remember one time I was feeling really down, out on a sales call far from home. Stopped at a restaurant to get a coke. The waitress came up and touched my arm when she asked, "what'll ya have, honey?" It was a very small gesture, but it was just what I needed to get me going again. I left her a $5 tip for a $1 tab.

I didn't see the press conference, but why on earth did Bob Barr snub him? He said something about wanting to be seen as equal with Obama and McCain, but that ain't gonna happen, so he just gave up the one place he might have been heard.
I did see much of Ron Paul's counter-convention in Minneapolis last week. Sounds like he still thinks he can wrestle the Republican Party from the corporations. Doesn't he know the Republican Party IS the big corporations? Wholly owned subsidiary.

Talking to Iran... and others

That would scare people. They'd scream "world government!"
Road Ranger had said
If you build an internet system for direct global democracy or even for self-governance by direct action
I think we would have to emphasize that this is just to INFORM people about other people, so they can object to their OWN government's propaganda.
While I also dream of a world with no governments--"with nothing to kill or die for"--I've seen too many great ideas die altogether because they overreached.

Inter-national grassroots networks might eventually overcome pro-war propaganda.
Of course, we will still have "Deciders," who delight in having the power to DICTATE what the country will do--especially when it's AGAINST the will of the people.
Still, as a long-term project, this has real possibilities. It was quite eye-opening to read a magazine called "World Press Review," actual stories from newspapers around the world. I was amazed to see that each country has it's OWN needs, problems, and worries.
Our media tell us that EVERY decision, anywhere in the world, is either pro-American or anti-American. The truth is that each country is pro and con issues that impact itself.

To compliment or not to compliment!!!
Posted:
9/5/2008 6:48:32 PM
I am never sure when it's appropriate or inappropriate. Will it seem sexist? Will it seem like "a line"? Will it seem superficial?
I was at Menard's (a hardware superstore) and blurted out to the cashier, "your hair is so beautiful, so silky." She seemed to appreciate it. But then, I was afraid I would seem like a dirty ol' man, so I added, "very much like my daughter's." She seemed disappointed when I added that.
I was at a business function and blurted out to a woman that she had a remarkable complexion. She seemed embarrassed, and said it was just makeup. I told her no, I'm sure that's not it. Then I thought, I should really watch what I say. I'm like a kid and sometimes say things without thinking when I'm impressed,
But, anyway, my point is that they guy may not know if a compliment is appropriate behavior these days.

Obama might pursue criminal charges against Bush
# lana Schor in Washington
# guardian.co.uk,
# Wednesday September 03 2008 19:32 BST
Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said yesterday that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November.
Biden's comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin.
But his statements represent the Democrats' strongest vow so far this year to investigate alleged misdeeds committed during the Bush years.
"If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued," Biden said during a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to ABC.
"[N]ot out of vengeance, not out of retribution," he added, "out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no attorney general, no president -- no one is above the law."
Obama sounded a similar note in April, vowing that if elected, he would ask his attorney general to initiate a prompt review of Bush-era actions to distinguish between possible "genuine crimes" and "really bad policies".
"[I]f crimes have been committed, they should be investigated," Obama told the Philadelphia Daily News. "You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt, because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve."
Congressional Democrats have issued a flurry of subpoenas this year to senior Bush administration aides as part of a broad inquiry into the authorisation of torturous interrogation tactics used at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
Three veterans of the Bush White House have been held in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to respond to subpoenas: former counsel Harriet Miers, former political adviser Karl Rove, and current chief of staff Josh Bolten. The contempt battle is currently before a federal court.

Bush rekindled the Cold War, by himself. Him against the whole world this time. Threats and bullying.
Bush thinks that American power is inexhaustible and that his abuse is without consequences--both economic and political. That's why polls show that the world sees Bush as a greater risk to the world than bin Laden.
As of today, Bush has 144 days left in office. Yeah, that's a "gross," all right.

Anthrax Suspect Commits Suicide
Posted:
8/2/2008 9:46:18 PM
When you look at the one-two punch of 9/11 followed by the anthrax, it was what made the Iraq war and a crapload of other stuff possible. The anthrax attack warned Democratic leaders and members of the media not to object to ANYTHING the administration wanted to do
Bush likes to call the paranoia and xenophobia and surrender of rights the "post 9/11 world," but it's not. We're still living in the 9/11 world, characterized by allowing the administration to do anything it wants. The real "post 9/11 world" will be characterized by a return to rational appraisal--and an end to that heinous "war on terror," which is a blank check and never-ending threat of martial law.
By the way, in this high-tech world of instant communication--coupled with an end to the Soviet threat--isn't it time we returned to the Constitution regarding Congress declaring wars? Of course, technically, you have to have a country to declare war against. You can't reasonably declare war on terrorism or bad weather or the common cold. . . .

Anthrax Suspect Commits Suicide
Posted:
8/1/2008 9:43:22 AM
I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but as SOON as the news hit that Democratic politicians and media offices were attacked by anthrax in 2001, I immediately assumed it was the Bush Administration. Who else had a motive? The goal was maximum paranoia to provide unlimited power to the administration. And it worked.
Americans were already hysterical over 9/11. The anthrax provided a one-two punch, and Dems and the media were chosen as a shot across the bow. (More anthrax attacks by "terrorists" would occur if you don't fall in line.) You'll notice that NOBODY questioned Bush as he pushed through all sorts of pet projects and fetishes, with the excuse that they were somehow related to 9/11 in ways he couldn't explain, due to national security, and of course, because "the great thing about being president is that I don't have to answer to anybody."
Now we have another case of a "lone gunman" being assassinated, oh, excuse me, "committing suicide while under protection against doing self-harm." They're going to use the lame motive that the attacks were supposed to make him famous, since he came up with a way to fight anthrax.
They want to close the case. Nothing like blaming the dead guy to avoid serious questions--because, after all, who will you ask? Even this story was withheld until Friday--although the guy died on Tuesday--so it could be buried, going into the weekend.
Here's the AP story on AOL:

Saraman--Precisely what I was suggesting:
he even suggested to outlaw speculating in what he termed 'national security commodities' ( which is a radical thought)
Our whole economy is based on oil, so it IS a national security issue to see that people aren't playing games with our future for a relatively small profit for themselves. I've been there. You CAN make $5k on a $1k outlay in two hours--I've done it. But oil is not the place to allow someone to control TWENTY TIMES the amount of oil for the money he puts down (only 5% required).
Real users have the money to buy what they need. They can pay cash. It's the speculators who need the leverage so they can buy what they will never use just to jack up the price for the rest of us.
Get rid of the margin leverage, and oil prices will find its correct CURRENT price.

Commodity Trading
Posted:

I am not a trader and my knowledge in commodity trading is very limited, but as far as I know, most of the trades are "paper trade" only. Very few speculators actually take delivery of the underlying goods. They live or die by two words: margin and leverage.
Leanco has it exactly right. I traded commodities and COMMODITY options. The speculators never take delivery. They drive up the price ON PAPER and after they've caused the trouble, they hightail it otta there.
Lemme give you an example. I once put down a thousand bucks and controlled enough silver so that in TWO HOURS, I was able to pocket five thousand dollars. I had done nothing productive. All I did was help feed the feeding frenzy.
If we wanted to stop this kind of insane disruption to our economy, we would simply say that oil is too critical a commodity to leave to the speculators--and kill MARGIN. If these yokels couldn't leverage their money, only serious buyers could buy--and those serious buyers would buy according to supply and demand, not what they think they can get away with.
Yes, it's true that contracts do expire, but unless you're a total moron, you don't hold them long. You just drive up the price on the near-term contract, sell it, and buy the next one out. This is the same money that chased dot.com stocks and worthless mortgage paper.

I used to trade in Silver and options. Glad you brought this up. The Saudis say, based on current world demand, there's no excuse for the price of oil should NOT be above $65/barrel. Trouble is, speculators are running it up, hoping they can convince others that there's no end to the bubble.
So we're back to the same scenario that brought us the dot-com bubble/burst and the home price bubble/burst. These are the people conservatives want to entrust with your retirement (social security).
Don't get me wrong. We need to get off oil, but the price is artificially high now. And some really dumb people think throwing away the 18-cent tax will help. It won't. Haven't you watched? Gas prices can jump 18 cents in a DAY! If we drop the tax, we'll just have bad roads and the 18-cents will just go to the fat cat oil companies, not to us.
Anyway, the speculator sheisters are buying oil at 5 cents on the dollar (that's a legit number) and running the price up. If we want to have rational pricing, all we have to do is have a mass MARGIN CALL. Tell the kiddies if they want to gamble, it's gotta be on THEIR dime.
But, of course, long-term, China and India are going to be sucking up oil like a shop vac, so we probably won't see the oil price bubble burst. And, of course, oil is priced in dollars, so when oil price goes up, dollar value goes down--and prices of metals, food, etc. go up accordingly.
T. Boone Pickens has a nice FIRST step to solve this problemL

• Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says 'Dam!'

Lawrence Solomon: challenges the CO2/climate change theory

Global warming is a religion to many .
It's impossible to argue with "faith".
I am totally amazed that many of the same people
who say "don't believe in climate change,"
(despite evidence),
are the same people who say "believe in God,"
(without evidence)
--JUST IN CASE.
As Gore says, if he's wrong,
the things he suggests
will only make us more energy efficient
and clean up the air.
I really don't get why some people are so adamant
that we shouldn't take prudent steps

High Court: No Death Penalty for Child Rape..
Posted:

This was a SMOKESCREEN. Whenever the court wants to make a truly historic, conservative reversal of century(ies)-old interpretation of the constitution, itself--it comes up with a ruling like this.
"No death penalty for raping a child!" Shocking. And while we were all discussing the horrors of child rape versus the horrors of the death penalty--they snuck through a LANDMARK opinion the very next day--outlawing all laws against handguns--saying, get this, handguns are great, because you can point one at an "evil-doer" while you're dialing 9-1-1.
As soon as I heard the "child rape" ruling, I knew something horrendous was coming the next day.

Really wish that were actually the case.

And it makes the loss so much greater.
It would be so much more fun to think

Who Will Obama Choose?
Posted:

Do you not think it incredibly foolish not to choose Clinton?
I don't think she wants it. Why should she settle for a limited-time second-fiddle engagement when she can have a lifetime of top power on the Supreme Court? It's the only place where she can have an entire section in the history books--separate from Bill.
That's the best possible outcome for everyone. She has the strength of conviction--and convincing--to be a one-woman majority. If she gets on the court, they'll forget who is chief justice.

US Sucked Into Israeli - Iran Conflict
Posted:

The Israelis are the only friendly nation in the Middle East, and I include the supposed "friends" of ours, the Saudis.
With friends like Israel, who NEEDS enemies? We have pumped trillions of our tax dollars to them, given them our most advanced equipment, had to rationalize and defend any and every act they do--and veto like crazy in the UN, had to take enemy stances against every other nation in the area on their behalf (who were then driven to the USSR, against us), and in the process, we have invited/challenged the oil nations to punish us, economically.
Israel has spies in our government, and when we find one, we just complain and send him home with a frown (it wouldn't be nice to keep 'em in jail!). They intentionally sink our ships and we say we, you know, sorta wish they'd, well, stop it. And when we pointedly tell them not to do something, they just laugh, flip us off, and do it, anyway--and we just smile, shake our heads, laugh, and say, "those rascals!"
Our relationship with Israel is really the tail wagging the dog. We have no policy over there that is not first approved by Israel. So, it's kinda fruitless for us to debate these matters.

Who Will Obama Choose?

I think that he needs someone like Jim Webb.
I was telling people a year ago that I wished Webb would run for prez. He would be the best possible choice. I mean, I like Richardson, especially ethnically and geographically, but he's a nice guy. Obama is a nice guy. What he needs is a pit bull who will bash the face of anyone who tries to "swiftboat" them. I don't think there's any such thing as a veep candidate who is too tough--unless he gets off-topic or seems crazy.
The GOP picked a loose cannon-crazy man as its presidential candidate. If they pick somebody mean (like Romney) for veep, they'll look like Bush/Cheney all over again.
At least there's no chance for that sleazeball, Lieberman--who was Bush/Cheney's biggest booster in 2000

Oil production increase

{quote] And now George Bush is campaigning to drill off the coasts of America
It's worse than that. Not only does he want to use up our domestic treasure. At the same time, he's fighting to keep paying $135 a barrel for foreign oil to buy oil for the "strategic oil reserve."
We should leave our oil in the ground until the foreign oil is used up. Then, Anwar and coastal oil will be worth a thousand bucks a barrel.

Oil production increase

High oil prices are brought to you by the same folks who brought you the dot-com bubble (and burst) and the housing bubble (and burst)--speculators. They buy contracts at 5% down, run up the price, and sell.
Weeks ago, the Saudis said there is NO justification for oil being above $65/barrel--based on supply and demand. Of course, they don't mind the price being high. Neither does Big Oil--whose profits are based on dollar sales, not volume sales. So higher prices mean even higher profits for them. But neither the producers nor the oil companies are to blame for the insane run up. It's the speculators who are trading each other upward. Profiting from our suffering.
The first thing to do is send out a MARGIN CALL on these suckers. Tell them they have to come up with the other 95% of what their contracts are worth. Bim-botta-boom, back to $65/barrel next week.
Oh, and by the way, the oil companies charge "what the traffic will bear." If the 18-cent tax is dropped, that 18 cents will just go to the oil companies, instead. We've seen gas prices jump 18-cents in just two or three weeks!! It's not going to stay in your pocket--and your roads will be the worse off. Silly, counter-productive gimmick.

Any Hillary fan who is against Obama should wake up and fight hard for him.
If Obama is elected, Hillary will go to the SUPREME COURT. Can you imagine a better outcome?
1) She has earned the respect of rightwingers by her tough attitudes, so she won't have trouble getting confirmed by senators who genuinely respect her.
2) The court is the one place where the things Bill does and says won't screw her up.
3) It's the one place where she and Bill will be remembered as having equal status in history.
4) It's the one place she can have major historical importance for the rest of her life.
5) If McCain wins, we won't be talking 5-4 on the court. It will be 7-2 or worse. That's what this election is all about.
6) Hillary is a one-person majority. If she's on the court, she will convince the moderates and outwit the rightwingers. Even in a perceived 5-4 minority going in, she'll still MAKE the majority. I have not been so optimistic for the future of the nation since JFK was killed in 1963.
Why on earth would Hillary want to be veep if she can go to the court??

Democrats Rejects to Open U.S. Waters for Oil Exploration
Posted:
6/11/2008 8:25:29 PM
You're right that Big Oil doesn't "cause" high prices. They just benefit from our suffering. The real cause of high oil prices is speculators who run up the price (with only 5% of their own money in it). The same people who brought you the dot-com bubble and the housing bubble. And what do we do? We give them cheap "capital gains" tax benefits on top of it.
As for drilling at Anwar and off-shore, can anyone say "strategic reserves"? As far as I'm concerned, we should leave our oil in the ground, and when the price comes back down to reasonable rates, buy foreign oil to REFILL every depleted oil field in the country. Why should we use up our domestic oil? Use up foreign oil and keep ours till there ain't anymore. Heh-heh-heh.

Dennis Kucinich tonight on C-span Live reading 38 articles for impeachment. June 9th
Posted:
6/11/2008 5:35:15 AM
Someone tell me this got sufficient coverage on mainstream news last night...
Sorry, Fiddler, even the cable news networks blew it off. NPR did about 30 seconds on it this morning.
[quote} Is it because Pelosi and the rest of the house lack the backbone and the cojones to press the issue?
The GOP is sometimes quite brilliant. They told Ken Starr to be as OBNOXIOUS and PETTY as he possibly could be regarding the consenting adult sex, so that people would be so sick of it, they'd never want to ever question a president ever again. They even tricked the Dems into killing the special prosecutor law--so there was no one to turn to when Bush went off the reservation (with our scalps).
Meanwhile, Dems saw how upset the publc got, and they are afraid they'll be seen as overly partisan if they just DO THEIR JOB now.
Years ago, Nixon said he picked Jerry Ford to be vice president, because he figured NOBODY would impeach him and be stuck with Ford as president. That was Bush's plan in picking Cheney. At his worst, Bush is not as bad as Cheney could be. That's why Kucinich tried to impeach Cheney last year.
If they wouldn't even TALK about impeaching Cheney, this is a dead letter, too. I think Kucinich just felt that the statement should be made. Historians will see that Bush's crimes did not go unnoticed, at least.

I also watched Kucinich deliver his articles. It was why we elected these folks in 2006.
Bush tried to call his wargames and self-indulgences "the post-9/11 world," but we're not there yet. We're still stuck in the "9/11 world" characterized by paranoia, xenophobia, overreaction, surrender of rights. it was all about pet projects, privilege, and pork Bush could push through with while we were still in shock.
We are just NOW beginning to move into the "Post 9/11 World," which will be characterized by a return to reason, seeking mutual benefit, and the United States no longer seeking to be the world's most-hated nation. And not a moment too soon.

Can Bill O' Reily do any thing besides picking on poor little girls?
Posted:
6/8/2008 1:13:19 PM
I agree that kids shouldn't be forced to "perform," in the same way I think "stage moms" are also guilty of "child abuse," but Billos response was just plain childish--complete with a (former) "expert" to make his silly case (he can't fight an 8-year-old without backup).
But the whole discussion is going the wrong way.
Face it, JESUS WAS THE COOLEST DUDE ON THE PLANET:
• He quit working and hung around with bums,
• defended prostitutes (and maybe married one),
• worked to end the death penalty ("let he who is without sin cast the first stone"),
• threw the capitalists ("moneychangers") out of the temple,
• and said "it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle" than for a rich man to enter heaven.
Jesus was the first real proponent of the separation of Church and State ("render unto Caesar's what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's").
Jesus was the ultimate Liberal. So liberals should be pointing out that the televangelist idiots are just perverting a wonderfully loving philosophy. After all, it was Jesus who said, "turn the other cheek," and it was Pat Robertson who said we should assassinate world leaders.
Instead of arguing against "religion," liberals should pull religion right out from under the feet of these hate-filled rightwing bigots. In the 60s, it was the ministers and priests who were on the front lines in the civil rights and anti-war movements, which is how it should be. Take back religion and we can take back the country.

The true state of Iraqi security forces today
Posted:
6/3/2008 8:50:34 AM
Here's the solution to Iraq:
Tell them to PAY for any operations
the U.S. military performs "on their behalf."
The precedent is the "First Gulf War,"
which some people say turned a PROFIT by billing our allies.
This time, run up the bill, to be paid in oil--by the Iraqis.
Then they would have some INCENTIVE to get their sh*t together.
We'd soon see how efficient they CAN be,
And my guess is that we could be out FAST.
Of course, that won't happen,
since the real Bush goal is permanent bases there.
BUT--if we were serious about having Iraqis run Iraq,
this would be the way to do it.

cell phone/guest etiquette
Posted:

If you were meeting her at the mall you should have waited for her in the mall, not greeted her at her car. I'd probably freak out a little bit if the guy approached my car before I was out of it... often I want to do a last minute touch up before I get out of the car, take a deep breath, and then put on my smile.
I guess I wasn't clear about that. We were meeting AT the mall parking lot in order to decide where to go. We had run through various options, but decided to see what the weather was like. So in this case, we were intending to "find" each other. I was working to find her, and she just didn't seem interested. That led to mutual disinterest, I guess.
I guess we've beat this to death. It sounds like there ARE reasons it's ok to be seen talking on a cell, but it is reasonable to expect do the call end when we meet in someone in person. Thanks to all.
