OU, worry or panic?

Interestingly, Miami and Texas both play Oklahoma. Wouldn't it be funny if Oklahoma beat both of them ?
If there is only 1 undefeated team in the BCS before bowl play begins & OU wins out they could easily end up in the BCS title game from strength of schedule alone. Of course being a Longhorn I hope that won't happen. HOOKEM HORNS!

One man to blame in UFC-Fedor breakdown
Posted:
8/2/2009 3:50:55 PM
By Kevin Iole Yahoo! Sports
It’s easy to paint Vadim Finkelchtein as the villain in this mess between heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Emelianenko is the free agent heavyweight with the gaudy 30-1 record and small but passionate fan base. The UFC is the world’s finest mixed martial arts promotional company and has roughly 90 percent of the top 100 fighters in the world under contract.
Emelianenko was looking for a place to fight and the UFC wanted to put on what it believed could have become a massive pay-per-view show with a big push by pitting Emelianenko against Brock Lesnar, its silo-sized heavyweight champion.
But no deal was reached despite a lucrative offer from the UFC. Though UFC president Dana White wouldn’t rule it out, chances of it happening in the future are remote.
Finkelchtein is the Russian heavyweight’s manager and, more significantly, the president and co-owner of what purports to be a major MMA promotional company, M-1 Global. Finkelchtein clearly used Emelianenko as a pawn in an attempt to force the UFC to accept M-1 as a partner. All M-1 Global brought to the table was one fighter, even if he is a very good one, which would have made White a moron had he acquiesced to that demand.
If the UFC was in the business of giving 50 percent of its company away every time it tried to sign an elite fighter, it would have been in worse shape a lot sooner than Chrysler.
The reason the deal didn’t get done is simple: Fedor Emelianenko.
Emelianenko’s supporters are going to point the finger at White as the reason a deal did not get done. White, though, agreed to essentially every demand Emelianenko made. He offered to pay him more than he’s ever made. He agreed to allow Emelianenko to fight in combat sambo. He agreed to allow Emelianenko to advertise M-1 on his fight shorts, on the apparel he wore and on banners his cornermen brought with them to the cage.
What White wouldn’t do, though, is give half of his company to Finkelchtein in return for the, ahem, privilege, of promoting Emelianenko’s next few fights.
The demand was kind of like an owner in the Continental Basketball Association demanding 50 percent ownership in an NBA team before allowing his player to sign.
Emelianenko can fight wherever he wants, of course. His legacy, though, took a serious shellacking when he refused to order Finkelchtein to get a deal done.
That would have allowed Emelianenko, who was ranked No. 2 in the most recent Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound Top 10 poll, to end any doubts whether he is as great as his most ardent supporters say or whether he is overrated, as White insists. Rather, Emelianenko acts as if he’s under some sort of spell cast by Finkelchtein. He’s never met White and when Finkelchtein, White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta negotiated via conference call, Emelianenko was on the line but said nothing.
All Emelianenko needed to do to know what he should have done was to look to Tito Ortiz, the UFC’s former light heavyweight champion. Ortiz and White have long engaged in a nasty public feud and they split, seemingly for good, after Ortiz’ contract ran out after he lost to Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 in May 2008.
There Ortiz was, however, on a conference call on Friday all chummy chummy with White. White revealed he had flown to Huntington Beach, Calif., recently and met personally with Ortiz, where they finalized resolved their differences.
Ortiz had dalliances with Elite XC and Affliction and said he was close to a deal to fight for Strikeforce. He referred to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker as “an awesome guy.”
Ortiz said the reason he opted to fight in the UFC is simple: Competition. “Who was I going to fight there?” Ortiz said. “I want to fight the best.”
It’s too bad Emelianenko doesn’t have the same attitude. Had he been outraged by Finkelchtein’s negotiating tactics and insisted Finkelchtein work out the best possible deal, White would have been announcing an Emelianenko-Lesnar bout at his ballyhooed news conference on Friday rather than again railing at Finkelchtein’s bizarre stance.
Finkelchtein released a statement on Friday before the UFC news conference in which he said, in part, “All we are asking is that there is give-and-take in the negotiations and that they are not one-sided.”
But the UFC gave on the money. The UFC gave on the Fedor’s desire to compete in the Russian combat sport of sambo. The UFC gave on allowing Fedor to wear M-1’s logos. Finkelchtein wouldn’t budge on his ridiculous demand that the UFC make him a full promotional partner.
So now, Emelianenko will be a free agent, traveling the world in search of a fight. He could fight Josh Barnett, whom he was supposed to fight on Saturday on an Affliction card until Barnett tested positive for an anabolic steroid and was denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission.
Emelianenko remains highly popular in Japan, where they don’t test for steroids and don’t honor U.S. suspensions. Barnett, who has been caught cheating more than once, could be licensed there and conceivably could fight Emelianenko.
But there are precious few quality opponents for him outside of the UFC. And none of the fights would captivate the world’s interest the way UFC 100 did on July 11.
Emelianenko is largely unknown in the U.S. despite his 30-1 record and long winning streak. The three pay-per-view shows he headlined in this country – PRIDE 32 in 2006, Affliction 1 in 2008 and Affliction 2 in January – sold a combined total of fewer than 300,000 units.
UFC 100 alone sold well over 1.5 million.
Finkelchtein clearly botched the negotiations, but he’s not to blame.
If Emelianenko really wanted to be in the UFC and fight the best competition in the world, he would have made certain Finkelchtein got it done.
If you want to blame someone in this fiasco, blame Emelianenko.
It’s 100 percent his fault.

If USC was in the SEC or Big 12 I don't know if they could finish without 2 losses. They don't play that well against wide open pro style offenses.
On another note..I was on the 20 yard line as VY took over in the final 5 minutes in the 2006 Championship game againt USC at the Rose Bowl. Most electrifying game I have ever seen live!!

If T-Mac plays another game in a Rockets jersey, I'll be surprised. The whole city of Houston pretty much wants him gone.
THANKFULLY this is the last year of his contract. Still, paying him 19million to miss the majority of ANOTHER SEASON is just hard to swallow. They are talking more along the lines of T Mac not being ready to play until February.
It also seems the Rockets have brought Mutumbo back as a free agent. He is the only HEALTHY player on the roster taller than 6'9.

If Biggio spent his career playing in a bigger market city like New York or Boston, I'm pretty sure we'd be sick of hearing about how great he was.
Raphael,
Funny how the Nations 4th largest city would be considered a small market. LOL
I enjoyed going to The Juice Box(Minutemaid Park) & miss seeing the Stros play live. I sure hated seeing Bagwell plagued by that shoulder injury his last 3 seasons.

Denny,
I never said Griffey wasn't a hall of famer. I agree he is a first ballot as well. In my mind one of the top 5 talents of all time. Jr also has one of the purest swings the game has ever seen.
The comparison to McGrady is that they are both often injured having on MORE than one occasion missing the majority of a season in their respective sport. That was it..nothing more..

No matter how much of an a** he is you can't deny A-Rod's numbers to date & performance on the diamond. If he stays healthy he will break some major offensive milestones.

Raphael,
Craig Biggio was the epitome of pro ball player on & off the field. Multiple Golden Gloves at catcher & second. Was known around the league for his hardnose play & hustle. I was wore my #7 Biggio jersey to a triple A game here in Frsno CA. You wouldn't believe the number of times I heard someone shout out BIGGIO! He did it the right way..

People are always so eager to show Wade the door. He has done nothing but win at every stop in his career. With wade calling the shots on defense this season & the additions they have made the Cowboys have the talent to take them all the way. Unfortunately Their nemisis last year was injurys. Not only on defense but also at RB, QB & O-LINE. I certainly feel much more at ease with Jon Kitna as Romos backup as opposed to Brad Johnson & his total lack of mobility.
The Cowboys have the talent to go all the way. Keeping that talent healthy is another thing. Time will tell..

The problem with the European players in my opinion is lack of toughness especially with the post players. There are a few exception like Gasol but they are few & far between.

Seems like everone in the NFC East made some strong moves in the offseason. Should certainly be a interesting season. Now if it will only get here! I think all 4 teams have the talent to win the East. That said, I feel the Redskins still lack a bonafide starter in Jason Campbell. I feel a healthy McNabb is still one of the top 5 QB's in the league. Time & injuries will tell the outcome.

USA vs BRASIL - Will the US prevail ?

The usa needs to have more players playing in Europe.
Frank, I totally agree! We just don't develope our youth like you do in Europe or in Mexico or South/Central America. Also, MLS tries to hold players hostage to lengthy contracts & refuse substantial transfer fees. I was SURPRISED when they let Landon go to Germany. Afew years back we had 4 players in the starting lineup at Fulham. We sorely need to develope a quality striker ot two.
All I can say is Tim Howard is a gift from the Gods.

FineLikeWine, I wholeheartedly agree..Friendship is the CORNERSTONE of a successful relationship. I hear stories of men & women alike who want to jump headfirst into a committed relationship. Many times this is a recipe for heartbreak. I think it is all about the ability to convey what one is looking for on a dating site. Communication is the key..

As for USC..They should be happy if they end up in the top 5 especially if you look at their strength of schedule. The Pac 10 as a whole is not that strong of a conference with the exception of USC & possibily Oregan St.If my Longhorns win this week I am happy with their top 5 ranking. We will just really never know till some sort of playoff system is in place. Of course , As long as the Universities are in bed with the BCS & the millions in revenue it just won't happen.

Here would be some of my changes for the Cowboys..
1- Bring in Mike Shanahan & offer Wade the Defensive Coor. position . If he isn't game then let him go. We need to let Garrett & his 3 milliona year go to the Loins if they will take him. You need a coach that will stand up to Jerry Jones. If Jerry keeps up his meddling ways we will become the Raiders of the NFC.
With all the injuries the Broncos had they were competitive in almost every game they played this year till the final snap. You certainly didn't see that never quit attitude on the Cowboys sideline.
2- We need ALOT of Barber, Choice & Felix Jones. That will open up our passing game especially with the zone blocking scheme that Shanahan will install.
3- Get rid of TO. We definitely couldnt trade him because there isn't a GM in the league that want that cancer.
4- Get some dependable, younger O Linemen. In Shanahans scheme we have seen 6 running backs succeed behind an above average O-Line this year. One gets hurt they plug in another.
5- Both of our safety positions are weak. Having to move corners to safety when an injury occured was definitely the weak point of our defense.
6- If Romo can't mature & make better decisions with the ball then after the 09 season he needs to be gone. Troy Aikman didn't put up the huge numbers like Romo has but he was a master at ball control. I am just not certain Romo is the guy to lead the Cowboys to the promise land.

Steel,
My apologies for the online attack. I am as passionate about my Cowboys as you are about your Steelers. That said, I respect the Rooney's & everything they have done for the game. That said, head to head they have produced some of the most exciting Superbowls of all time.
Yes, your Steelers are 4-1. Numbers are one thing but is is all in the body of work. You did play the Eagles close which I commend them for. That said, Their victories have come against the Texans, Browns, Ravens & Jags. After their bye week we will see what the Steelers are really made of. They will have to face the rest of the NFC East teams plus the Chargers, Pats & Titans. After the bye is when we find out who the Steelers really are.

Honestly..In the NFC East any of the 4 teams can be vitorious head to head. There isn't a stronger division in the NFL this season. You could EASILY see the NFC & Super Bowl champ come from this division.
Just a little crazy..congrats on your Giants quick start. Looks like ridding themselves of that cancer Shockey was one of the best moves of the offseason.

T.O. is just lucky to even have a job let alone having a chance to get into the hall of fame. The Cowboys are the last hope for guys like T.O. If he screws this team up, then no team will want him after that.
Of course if TO were playing for your injury plagued LACKLUSTER Squeelers you would be right on the TO bandwagon. He is certainly better than any wideout the black & gold have padding it up right now. Yeah..He can be a little selfish at times but as can Roy Williams, Chad Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Bouldin,Plaxico Burress, Donald driver & a dozen other wideouts in the game. To say that he will screw a team up is just absurd. That is like all the peeps here placing the Giants early losses & potential success solely on ELI last season. simply absurd. Thank you Mr. Mel frickin Kipper..Oh..does your employer drug test? Inquiring minds want to know..

Vince Young wants out of football?
Posted:

I was at the 2005 Rose Bowl when Vince took over in the final 8 minutes & beat USC for the national title. Vince was a Great College QB..One of the best of all time. This was against a college defense running the spread offense. Now he is in the pros with defenders who have the same quickness & his average throwing arm is becoming more evident. I just dont feel he will ever be more than an above average pro QB.

Let's keep in mind that Kimbo had around 15 fights with chumps prior to the big ppv fight. Brock would manhandle Kimbo. Let's also keep in kind that Lesnar was thrown into the fire with quality opponents from the jump. Once his skills are honed a bit more he will more than likely have a belt.

Fiona,
As an American it pains me to witness some of the decisions Gillette & Hicks have made. Especially when it comes to a game they know nothing about. It is obvious their move was purely financial & has nothing to do with the love of the game itself.
Pedro..Not following your National team I made an assumption recognizing the talent that is on the roster. I suppose all the talent in the world needs team chemistry & a willingness to leave it all on the pitch for your country.

The match started at 1:30 pm Houston time. Luckily I am in sales & work quite a bit from home.
It was a close first half & Torres didn't play his usual brilliant football. The second half Torres came alive & not only scored a brilliant goal but made some almost perfect entry passes into the box. When they play as they did in the second half they can beat anyone in the EPL.
That said, It still looks like Spain is one of the teams to beat at Euro 08.
