Traveling Alone?
Posted: 9/29/2009 4:51:37 AM
I have done most of the world by myself over the past 10 years. It has it's pros and cons.
I am currently back in China long-term again. My Mandarin is crap, so travelling alone in-country is a nightmare, but certainly something to remember.

So called Terrorist Attack at Holsworthy
Posted: 8/7/2009 4:45:38 PM
Good post Chiny.
I remember the day after the so-called Hilton bombing. I was talking with a friend who was an Army officer, and attached to an organisation that I will not name. I said to him that the "bombing" seemed to me like an AS*O operation gone wrong, as they were at that time in a fight with the government over additional funding.
His reply to me, with a sideways glance, was that I would be wise not to repeat my opinion elsewhere.
Governments all over the world try to keep us in a state of fear to enhance themselves or their agenda. We are still looking for those WMD's.

Traveling Alone?
Posted: 6/9/2009 2:00:33 AM
I would guess that most of us who read/post on the "travel" forum would be solo travellers.
I am constantly travelling the world by myself. Most of the time I think it is the best way to travel but sometimes, just sometimes, it is nice to share the experience.

Teaching English Abroad?
Posted: 6/1/2009 5:58:34 PM
I have taught university in China and high school in Thailand. I am about to return to China to teach Masters and Doctoral students at a different university.
If you have a degree (any major) and are a native English speaker, it is relatively easy to get a teaching job in Asia.
Daves, or any of the many ESL sites will have plenty of opportunities.
I like teaching in China, but you do have to be careful about some language schools. I only apply to universities, and have had no issues (so far).
Most schools in China do not require a TEFL certificate, so as a first-timer it might be better to try here first, before committing yourself to the expense of a decent course.
Happy to relate my experience to any interested person.

WA daylight savings referendum
Posted: 5/14/2009 7:59:03 PM
I am still surprised by the number of people against daylight saving. I live in Brisbane and we do not have it either. In summer I wake up with the birdlife at 4.30 am, which is tiring by the end of the day.
Having been raised in Melbourne I loved dailight saving in summer. Many a wonderful evening spent at the beach in the evenings after work.
I understand everyone's arguments against it, but I just think it is great.

Death - Fear or Acceptance?
Posted: 5/14/2009 7:25:11 PM
I think that most of us do not fear death itself, rather, the dying process.
None of us want to go through a protracted period of pain and suffering, but death is a certainty, so, if there is nothing you can do about it, why worry?

No way
I think that the "politics" in those places would be depressing.
Anyway, why would I want to be around grumpy old bast*rds like me?
That is why I love teaching university. Keeps me thinking young.

Anzac Day Feelings and Memories
Posted: 4/23/2009 9:21:49 PM
I am happy and proud to be able to march in Brisbane this year.
Having lived in many different parts of the world over the past 10 years I have let this day of ours pass by with indifference.
I was fortunate enough to do the dawn service with our small naval contingent for 2 years in the Marshall Islands, and another year marched with the locals in the Cook Islands.
Whist these experiences were wonderful, and very moving, I expect to have an even greater feeling when I march with the Vietnam vets tomorrow.

Just look at the information page on your passport. It will give you the issue date, and the expiry date. You can do the math. My passports are valid for 10 years. I don't know about yours.
Many countries like you to have a least 6 months validity still left on your passport before you arrive, so if the expiry is getting close, it might be better to renew before you go.

Posted: 3/3/2008 6:45:13 PM
Older does mean more memories, but they need not be painful ones.
I am 59. I have had a lot of love in my life, plus some pain along the way. You need to learn to let go of the pain and move on. A new experience is just there, waiting for you to discover it.

Ways to deal with culture shock
Posted: 2/23/2008 7:16:37 PM
Do lots of reading on the place before you go. It will help you fit in and stop you making a complete idiot of yourself. Have some notion of the local customs, and try to do things their way. Don't complain about everything being different from home.

Aussie Cricket Team
Posted: 1/12/2008 12:41:00 AM
I don't blame Ponting for becoming upset with that Indian reporter. I saw the interview, and the reporter's inference was that Ponting lacked integrity, and in fact might have even lied about whether the ball was "grassed" or not. I think Ponting showed remarkable restaint. The reporter is lucky that Ponting didn't deck him.
A previous poster dragged out comments from past sports "greats" to support his assertion. Shame that he failed to quote those that supported Ponting.
I have great admiration for the Australian cricketers and I do not believe that any batsman should "walk". Sure, in the good old days, all the gentlemen would "walk", but if the Australian team were the only ones doing it, and then started losing lots of games, how long before we would be hearing the general public cry out for more onfield success.
Abide by the umpires decision, good or bad. Hopefully you will receive some good ones that offset the bad.
We should be proud to have Ricky as our captain.

Has anyone been to Sri Lanka ? What is air travel like can you get direct flights from Australia?
Posted: 1/1/2008 11:05:57 PM
Jen, unless you have a strong reason to want to go to Sri Lanka, I can think of many other places that might be more suitable, especially for your first time OS.
As you are in the Gold Coast area, you might want to think along the lines of South-East Asia. Thailand, Vietnam, or Malaysia perhaps.

Melo I can relate exactly to what you wrote. I am 59 and recently (last year) came out of a 5 year relationship with a very attractive and intelligent lady, who just happened to be 22 years my junior.
I certainly have no interest in the old and overweight women who appear in my "viewed me" page. I am currently seeing someone who is 12 years younger than me, so I am getting better
Last year a female friend my age could not keep up as we climbed The Great Wall.
Yes, I realize that there are women out there my age who are fitter than me, but they are a rare animal, elusive, and they are looking for guys 20 years younger than them
Krim - excellent post also.

How do you get a man to buy you a Christmas present?
Posted: 12/21/2007 3:09:19 AM
I'm with you P&S. I hate the whole "presents" thing, both giving and receiving. It seems to me that one never really gets what one likes anyway. Short of buying my girl a BMW I generally have no idea what is a good gift. I have spent hundreds of dollars on jewelry gifts that were hardly worn and, apart from the bass guitar which I picked out myself, I do not recollect ever receiving anything of real interest either.
The reality is that if I want something, I will just go out and buy it myself.
Christmas and birthdays fill me with terror.

Ex-CIA agent: Waterboarding 'saved lives'
Posted: 12/12/2007 6:15:47 PM
The problem of course in saying "we should only use it on terrorists" is - how do you define who is a terrorist?
Once you condone a practice as being "OK" on certain people, you can be sure that the practice becomes even more "OK" to use on other sectors of the population.

9 Men slapped on the wrist for gang rape of 10 yr old
Posted: 12/12/2007 5:24:40 AM
Yes Jiperly, this was the reasoning of the magistrate when she handed down her sentence. This was also the view of the prosecutor, who was in fact the one who proposed the sentences to the magistrate. The prosecutor has (I believe) been "stood down" pending an investigation.
I did read that the child had previously been raped at the age of 7, but I cannot verify this information at this time.
This case has caused an outcry in Australia, where many people cannot believe the leniency given, especially to the older offenders.

Posted: 12/9/2007 12:59:59 AM
Hey Formidable! I think that a size 12 definately entitles you to classify yourself as "average", especially in our overweight society.
If you feel that you are being deceitful ( and good for you for your honesty) then state in your profile your dress/jeans size AND your weight (especially since you do not have photos).
I have my weight listed in my profile because I wanted to discourage the bigger ladies. Personal preference.

Guys, What do you think about Yoga, Track or Sweatpants On Women
Posted: 12/7/2007 10:59:05 PM
Hi Sassy. I am going to say that it entirely depends on the person wearing them (male or female).
Fact of life - if you are slim or athletic looking you can just about get away with wearing anything. People who fit into the "chunkier" category have to be a little more careful.
It also makes a lot of difference (to me) if we are talking saggy/baggy el cheapo trackies, or something well tailored. The saggies do not look good on anybody.

If you had to choose........
Posted: 12/7/2007 4:11:39 PM
I would choose someone with a fine combination of both. The lack of either is not particularly attractive to me. Common sense itself is somewhat overrated. Totally sensible people are just as boring as the intellectual who cannot do the simple tasks around the house. I like someone who is clever enough to be "playfully stupid" when the situation warrants, but can also hold a decent conversation at other times.

Sorry Venus! Without us knowing the details we would all only be guessing at what went wrong. From what you have written it seems that (at face value) he doesn't really care for you. We do not know why. There are some strange people in the world and I doubt it was just "cultural". Maybe some Indian guys will respond with some meaningful answers for you. We all need to trust in someone. Sometimes it kicks us in the teeth, but we have to keep doing it, if we want any sort of relationship. Good luck to you in future romances.
