Solitaire and Headaches
Posted: 11/24/2009 9:01:55 PM
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! Unfortunately, I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to stop playing it. I adjusted the brightness and contrast downward, and it didn't help. This monitor is non-adjustable, so I can't tilt it up or down. I've tried sitting as far away from the monitor as I possibly can... no good. This does NOT happen when I'm just surfing the net. I think this happens because I'm constantly moving my eyes while playing, trying to find the best moves as quickly as possible.
I used to have Solitaire on an old computer about 4 years ago, and I would play it over and over every night before going to bed, and I never had this problem. I guess I've just gotten older.

Solitaire and Headaches

Well.... I finally got a new computer, and this one has Solitaire on it! I've been playing it every chance I get, but I have noticed that I get headaches when I play it, and I'm wondering why! Could it be because the new monitor is a flat-screen monitor, or that the brightness and contrast need adjusting? Have any of you experienced this, and if so, what did you do to remedy the situation? And don't tell me to stop playing Solitaire!

I FINALLY have a new computer.....BUT...
Posted: 11/18/2009 9:04:46 PM
I finally have a new computer. It's a Compaq, and is very nice! HOWEVER, my old computer, which is about 16 years old, is MUCH, MUCH FASTER than this NEW one!
I'm still using dial-up and the same ISP.... so WHY is THIS computer so much slower than the old one? Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

OH...BTW... the monitor came with a CD. It says "software and Documentation" on the label. I KNOW this is a stupid question, but do I HAVE to run this CD in order for everything(Including the computer) to run properly???

Women that smoke!!
Posted: 11/18/2009 6:12:47 PM
playing devil's advocate here for a minute....
My aunt and uncle were married for 61 years ... My aunt chain-smoked all those years(she started when she was EIGHT! .. and yes.. she's dead, but she made it to 82... not bad!), and most of that time, she was around my uncle. He just turned 86 last week, and is in perfect health! While I'm certain that "second-hand smoke" can negatively affect some, I also think that genetics play a large role in whether someone gets sick from being around it for extended periods of time.

Oh... and for the record... nicotine is COLORLESS, so you wouldn't get any stains on your KHAK!

Here in North America the hourly rate is going to be a scant 10 meteors per hour . In Asia, on the other hand, the hourly rate is predicted to be between 400-500 per hour!!
I saw both the 2001 and 2002 storms... I had a great spot for watching, and listened to Michael Stearns' CD Planetary Unfolding all night! What a show!!

So, all I will say on here is B-12!! Take two 1,000 microgram tablets a day for 2 week, then one 1,000 microgram tablet every day after that. This is what saved my life last year.
You're welcome to e-mail me privately. If not, then I wish you nothing but the best in your battle!! YOU WILL WIN!!

Strange hobbies/collections
Posted: 11/9/2009 9:26:35 PM
I actually have two friends who collect kaleidoscopes(The VERY expensive ones)! If I were to collect them, I would want those wonderful cheap ones that you used to be able to buy in the dimestores!
As for what I collect... I don't really consider it strange... I collect Dr Pepper signs/thermometers/ memorabilia from the 40s, 50s, and (primarily) 60s. I also collect buttons.. not just political, but ALL kinds of buttons. I believe I have close to 2,000, and probably more.
And, when I can find it, I pick up pieces of "weave ware"... I don't know if that's actually what it's called. I don't have a lot of it, and I certainly don't have a complete set.

Oh... I also collect dust!

If the music from a film is RE-recorded for release on CD, it is usually called a film score, whereas if a CD of the music that was recorded FOR a film is released, it's usually called the Soundtrack(There have been exceptions, though). But as I said in a previous post, I prefer the term film score!

Side note - I just received my copies of Goldsmith's scores for Escape from the Planet of the Apes, and - on one CD - his scores for I.Q. and Seconds... both wonderful scores!

Pipe Organ(I have Bernard Herrmann to thank for that!)
Oboe(Can't think of anyone to thank for THAT!)
Serge Synthesizer(I DEFINITELY have Michael Stearns to thank for that!)

In regards to Williams winning the oscar for Fiddler on the Roof, he didn't compose the songs, but adapted and arranged the songs, and he MIGHT have composed some underscore, based on the songs, but I'm definitely not an expert on musicals... just film scores!

I've always preferred the term "film scores", though it isn't actually accurate(The term "Soundtrack" has always sounded a bit too geekish to me)! There are a wealth of terrific film score websites.... filmscoremonthly.com(FSM(Lukas Kendall) has released an ASTONISHING number of classic scores since starting their own label), moviemusic.com, Intrada.com(They(Doug Fake, et. al.) also have released a LOT of incredible scores... they released a 2-disc set of the complete Goldsmith score for Alien last year!), and many composers have both fan sites and official sites.
I'm going to list my favorite scores..
Bernard Herrmann - Obsession
Jerry Goldsmith - This one is hard(Since damned near everything he composed is a classic!), but I would have to say his score for the film Legend
John Williams -(TIE) Close Encounters of the Third Kind/ Jaws 2
Alan Silvestri - Cast Away(Notice my username! )

Obsession is my all-time favorite score, and - dare I say it! - my favorite music of ALL(Beatles included! )

The 09/10 Arts Season- Opera and Symphony
Posted: 10/22/2009 9:39:53 PM
I used to get season tickets to the local concert series, but haven't in the last couple of years.
As for your dilemma... I'd DEFINITELY choose the symphony and opera over HOCKEY! In hockey, it's basically just guys beating the crap out of each other. With OPERA, it's - depending on which opera it is! - the same thing, only put to music!

You might not know the name, but you more than likely know his music! He composed the themes for TV shows such as The Addams Family and Green Acres, not to mention the scores for virtually all of those horrible Don Knotts movies!
He was a very gifted composer, and he will be missed.

favorite beatles song
Posted: 10/14/2009 9:36:25 PM
I would have to say that my all-time favourite Beatles song is "Your Mother Should Know"(Magical Mystery Tour). My other favourites would be "Hey Bulldog"(Yellow Submarine), and "Baby You're A Rich Man"(Magical Mystery Tour).
It would probably be EASIER for me to list my LEAST favourite Beatles song, and that is without ANY doubt "Michelle"! With all due respect to the previous poster, I absolutely DETEST that song! If you're diabetic, DON'T LISTEN TO IT!
A bit off-topic.... I've been listening to Magical Mystery Tour a LOT during the past week, and it occurred to me just how MANY of their best songs came from that album!

"...My favorite piece is "Brandenburg Concertos No.5-i: Allegro" by Bach ...do you think that odd? "

Not at all! Of the 6 Brandenburg Concertos/Concerti, my favorite is the 3rd movement of the third concerto. I have a Yamaha V-50 keyboard, and one of my passions in life is to play along with my CDs as I'm listening to them. Whenever I fire up the keyboard, the first thing I usually play along with is that 3rd movement from the third concerto....LOTS of fun!!!

By "O.P." I'm assuming you're referring to me. ACtually, I'm NOT using Windows ME. A friend of mine gave me the Windows ME disc a number of years ago, but I was strongly advised NOT to use it, so I never put it on my computer. I WAS seriously thinking about it recently, but since all I need to do (At least until I get my new computer) is to download Mozilla Firefox, I'm not about to do it!

My local ISP recently(ahem)"improved" their webmail page, not taking into account the possibility that SOME people might still have only Internet Explorer 5.5(Yes.... I'm talking about ME! ). Now I can no longer access my e-mail from home. It says at the bottom of the page that it's best viewed using IE6.0(or higher), Firefox, and one other web browser(Can't remember which one.).
I'm assuming that "Firefox" is Mozilla Firefox. Is this something you can download for free, and if I were to download it, would it automatically delete IE5.5 on my computer?

Was my computer "hacked"?
Posted: 9/7/2009 8:12:10 PM
I just got on my computer to check the usual sites I get on, POF included. I was online just about 3 hours ago. All the sites I get on, I'm already logged onto, so I don't have to type my user name or password. THIS time, ALL of my user names AND passwords were gone, and I had to retype them. In fact, when I logged on to POF for the second time to post this, I had to reenter my user name and password AGAIN. What could've caused this? Was my computer hacked into? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Social anxiety?
Posted: 9/3/2009 8:52:06 PM
I was 9 when my mother died, so I was too young to know anything that she was going through, but SHE suffered from social anxiety, though she wasn't always like that. Unfortunately, it got so bad that she never left the house, and was too scared to go to the doctor... turns out she had cancer, and didn't even know it until the day before she died. Like I said, I was too young to know what "social anxiety" was/is, and I never knew my mother suffered from it.
Now... I wouldn't say that I suffer from it, but I know that I'd rather not go to any functions where I wouldn't know anyone....does THAT count?

Do Cellphones Cause Brain Tumors?
Posted: 9/2/2009 9:27:21 PM
My brother was a senior scientist for the FCC until his retirement 3 years ago. His field of expertise? Microwave energy! HE resisted getting a cell phone, until a number of family emergencies basically forced him to get one. He rarely uses it.
I've used a cell phone MAYBE a total of 6 times. I don't like 'em, I don't have one, and I don't need one.

Does anyone else appreciate Classical music
Posted: 9/1/2009 9:43:05 PM
Since you like Satie's Gymnopedies, you'd LOVE Bernard Herrmann's recording of them! It was reissued on the London label's "Weekend Classics" series(I think it's OOP, though). Upon it's initial release on LP back in the early 1970's(Entitled "The Impressionists), this recording was critically praised pretty much "Across the board", with reviewers applauding Herrmann's interpretation of the Saties pieces! Well worth seeking out the CD reissue!!!

My computer's CD player.....
Posted: 7/30/2009 9:17:41 PM
I have an OLD computer(As far as computers go), and the CD player stopped working a few hours ago. The tray comes out, I put a CD in(read-side facing down), and the light blinks for about 10 seconds, then.... NOTHING! I pulled the CD out, and just happened to notice that the tray itself was VERY dusty.
My question is...
I was thinking about spraying some contact cleaner into the opening(Where the tray slides out) to see if that might help somehow, but I'm wondering if I HAVE to turn the computer OFF before doing this(Out of fear of frying the computer if I spray a liquid into it while it's on), or can I leave it on?
Also, could it be possible that if I just reboot the computer, that it might get the CD player to start working again?

Saturday afternoon, I was down at a local market(Family owned, and very small, but very popular). I walked in and there was a friend of mine(Lilli). Lille was the maid for a long-dead friend of mine, and she and I have been friends for almost 20 years(she's 67 years old).
I asked her if she needed a ride home, and she asked me how long I was going to be. I told her I was just going in to pick up some peaches and leave. She said she would wait. I got the peaches, and we walked out to my car. She walked around to the front passenger side, and I told her that there was too much stuff in the front seat(Actually, a LOT of stuff, which she could plainly see), and that I was going to have to push some stuff on the back seat over, and she could sit back there. What she said absolutely made me stand there with my mouth wide open. She said, "I ain't sittin' in the back seat! This ain't slavery times!". I looked at her and said,"WHAT?!?!?!? Are you kidding?", and she said, "No, I ain't kidding.", so I said, "Suit yourself", and she walked off. Now, earlier this year, I was over at her house, and she needed to go somewhere and I offered her a ride(In the back seat, simply because my front seat and floorboard was - as usual - full of junk(No one ever rides in my car with me.. if they did, I would keep it clean!) ), and she gladly accepted. I'm sure you've figured out that Lilli is black. If there hadn't been all that much in the front seat, I would've had NO PROBLEM with her sitting up front. I was trying to be as accomodating as I could , given that I had no idea I was going to run into someone that I knew that could've used a ride. To be honest, I was not only hurt, but I was pissed off as well. Do you think her reaction was justified, given how long she and I have been friends?

For some strange reason, I have a feeling I'm going to regret starting this thread!

Goldsmith had a long working relationship with Michael Chrichton(They were also close friends), who wrote The 13th Warrior. Graeme Revell(a sub-par composer) wrote the ORIGINAL score for the film, and Chrichton wasn't happy with it, so he had Revell's score thrown out, brought Goldsmith in, and Goldsmith composed a magnificent score for the film!

HELP!! I have two Jade plants, both of which are cuttings of cuttings of a very large Jade plant my brother had(Did you follow that?). The first cuttings I initially rooted did very well for about a year or so, then they started to die, so I cut some off, rooted THOSE, and they were doing alright until recently. Now THESE Jade plants are dying, so I've cut one piece off and am rooting it. What keeps happening to these plants? I was under the impression that Jade plants were damned near impossible to kill!
Any help appreciated!

Southpark favorite episode

Truly impossible to name ONE episode!
Some of my favorites...
When Cartman discovers that if you shove food up your ass, you sh1t out of your mouth! When the parents are having a dinner party, they'll occasionally(and oh-so casually) say, "excuse me", hold a waste paper basket up to their mouth, and make that HYSTERICAL sound as crap comes out!!
The "special olympics" episode...when, in response to being asked what his handicap is, Cartman replies, "How the hell should I know... I'm retarded.......DYUUUUUUUH!"
The Loch Ness Monster episode, where Chef's father was talking about The Loch Ness Monster coming to his door, and when he asked him what he wanted, the Loch Ness Monster said, "Oh... about tree-fiddy"!!!

Farrah Fawcett

I just looked over the forums a few times, and was shocked that no one had started a thread about the tragic death of Farrah Fawcett. This will remedy THAT.
I was deeply saddened to learn of her death. Tonight, however, it occurred to me that Ryan O'Neal is living his role(And the plot) from Love Story. A sad case of "art imitating life".

what is your headline and what does it mean?

My headline was spoken by Chuck Noland(Tom Hanks) near the end of my favorite film - CAST AWAY - and has become pretty much my "credo"; "...and I know what I have to do now... I gotta keep breathing, because tomorrow the sun will rise... who knows what the tide could bring?"
