The news is that the US is dumbing down and you're sinking into third world status. On the otherhand all I need is one crazy genius to build a mass producable non fossil fuel power generator and I'm set to take over and knock down the status quo.

US plans massive data sweep

For every measure the authorities take there is a countermeasure. BTw the US is WAAAAAAAAY BEHIND on utilizing this technology. I've seen stuff on the underground market from China and India that makes the goodies developed by any agency with no name's efforts look amateurish at best. So, don't worry. there'll soon be software downloads for your computer, mobile phone, house phone and other electronics that will thwart the US gov't's best efforts.

Greatest P.M. in Canadian History?
Posted:

Several PM's have to share the title:
MacDonald, conniving, drunkard and devious Scotsman that he was, presided over the creation of a country from four bickering provinces. He built a railway and averted any number of calamities while creating as much controversy as he could.
Laurier, the creator of the middle way and our first Liberal PM he helped usher Canada into a new age and broke the deathlock that the conservatives had on the country.
William Lyon Mackenzie King, the Mad Hatter, he did more for the country both good and bad than anyone else in politics. He left a lasting legacy and bad taste in the mouths of all Canadians whether French or English speaking, Conservative, Liberal or other political bent.
Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the 'Man From Fuddle Duddle', he promised nothing, delivered nothing and we were happy. For once we had a PM who told no lies-but did spin some great tales... He redefined our relationship with the US and European nations, lead us further astray from the UK, simultaneously pandered to and insulted all the ethnic and political groups that inhabited our nation and got away with it.Truly a great politician!

Just to give you something of an overview from the rest of the world. I live in Japan where we are forced to be 50% more efficient than the US-our cars get better gas mileage, speeds on our roads are lower, our traffic cops are nastier than yours and new houses and apartments are going to be much more better insulated and disaster proof (after a major scandal that has shaken up the building industry).
Our current gas price is about $1.90/liter of regular–lets say about $9/US gallon. Nice and cheap isn't it? Electric bills for a small apartment run about US$130/month–we have too many coal and LNG generating stations, can't build any more hydro or geothermal stations as that is at capacity and there is a moritorium on constructing new nuclear power stations.
On the mainland Korea is facing brownouts as they can't generate enough power to meet demand. China has to impose rotating blackouts on areas as despite their massive efforts to build more power sttions they can't keep up with demand. India, Pakistan and their neighbours–nice places to visit but, don't want to live there...
OK, so much for the update of what is happening in the part of the world where over 80% of the population resides. now on to the interesting stuff. Besides building ultralight and super cheap laptops that cost about US$150 each and are good enough that the CIA and other agencies without names drool over their capabilities, China builds electric bicycles and motorbikes. The average bike costs about US$200 is designed around an MTB frame and has a top speed of 25 kilometers/hr and a range of 200 kilometers-possibly faster if you care to pedal and maximixe use of the gears available. The motorbikes have a top speed of 100km/hr and can travel about 200km before needing a recharge-cost is around $1,000/bike.
Additionally, a few enterprising sorts have been building an item that derives electricity from splitting water into H2 and O2 and burning the Hydrogen to produce electrical power. It's still very crude they get out only 3 times what they put into it!
Methane gas generated from sewage and animal waste, ethanol generated from food waste and other processes are all being used to effect.
What I would like to see is some mad scientist type come up with a cheap, easy to use method of recharging a moped, electric bicycle or motorbike battery that can be set up and used by an idiot–whether that idiot is an inbred redneck or an equally inbred yabanjin. currently, all the mad scientists in China have been co-opted by the government in their effort to take over the world, Japan has only the one (Dr NakaMats) all the rest are now Otaku-too busy chasing after Sailor Moon lookalikes to invent stuff. so, that leaves us with the US-at one point home to more mad scientists than any other continent.
So, what do you think? Is it possible to create a commecially saleable device that will recharge batteries quickly without tapping into house current or using gasoline? If it's possible and the device can be made cheap, safe and reliable I can sell 9 million of them in the first 6 months of production. Sweden awaits!

Glad we can agree on that. But, the very fact that 3 reprobates in a row have had the top job in the US government says that there is something very wrong in Foggy Bottom.
I was very worried when George Jr announced his lineup after his election victory. He had a walking wounded VP, one of the architects of the US's failure in Viet Nam, assorted Yesmen, Jokers and Idiots and Colin Powell-why he was there I don't know. But, Jr was much better than the idiot he ran against. How the Democrats had the gall to field someone less intelligent than Dan Quayle... Your guess is as good as mine.
I really don't know who will be Bush's replacement, the only guarantee is they will be a Democrat, in fact the Democrats could field a braindead zombie of a loser and be assured he will win.
Things look dark indeed for the Western Hemisphere's former superpower.

I was busy being a pushy, nosey reporter for a wire service. I was not on the front lines as that was reserved for people from the big name companies that George Sr needed to impress the American people. I say he wimped out, the Japanese think he wimped out as do the other SE Asian nations.
Right now S Korea, Taiwan and Japan are questionning George Jr's commitment and his promises. They're starting to think that Daddy was not too good a guy and the son is much worse.
I really don't have a very good opinion of the last 3 presidents, not a statesman amongst them, not one of them had a thought of what's best for the American people. One was amoral, totally lacking in any redeeming qualities of any sort and the other 2 were lying, dishonest and out to fill their pockets.

Or for a real extreme fix you can use a subnotebook like I have. It has no hard drive but uses 10GB removable media cards instead. The advantage to this machine is your data goes with you if you have to leave the computer for someone else. Price was right too, cost me $400.

I recently opted out of a service and my e-mail inbox was suddenly deluged with messages from supposedly beautiful women saying they wanted me. growing tired of this bit of fraud I blocked the addresses. Now I'm being deluged with virus and trojan infected messages. I've checked the source and they all originate from this dating site I'm a former member of. Guess these people really don't like it when you don't play by their rules.

Let's do this...Make the politicians accountable by pegging their wages at a lowlevel civil servant's(snivel serpent to all you fans of Bickerstaff). Now the Minister for Finance can get bonuses based on how well the economy grows. If the economy grows 5% adjusted after inflation he gets a 5% bonus at the end of the year. If he brings in a contract with China that results in C$10 billion a month in new trade in OUR favour he gets .01% of the 10 billion as a bonus. should he convince Bill Gates to become a Canadian citizen, move himself and his companies to Vancouver...We'll give him the country.
Likewise for all the other politicians whether they are ministers, backbenchers or backstabbers. If they radically improve canada's welfare we pay them-otherwise they work for free.

Why not legalize the soft drugs like grass and regulate the hard drugs. Tax the shit out of grass and hash, ensure the quality stays high and cut the props out of 1 group of dealers. Take the hard drugs and have centers where they can be legally bought and used, make all the users get a registration card and have them carry it at all times. The dealers would quite literally commit suicide as their product becomes worthless and their source of income disappears.

Bush told the truth-as he saw it. Granted the man is mad and unfit to run a country. Now that that bit of history is over what are you Yanks going to do about it? Debate should be focused on what will happen after this regime falls.

Guilty until proven innocent works for the French. Why shouldn't it work for the Bush Administration? GWB Inc's days are numbered anyways. US political laws kick him out of power in a few more years.
What gets me is not that Saddam was a scumbag, a homicidal maniac, a murdering thief and a whole bunch of other nasty things but he was a Republican dog. Ron Reagan got him his weapons, secretly funded his troops training and sicced him on the Iranians. The US knows that-you SOB's have the reciepts to prove it. Now we have people over there pissing and moaning because you created a Superfund site in Iraq and now you have to clean it up.
George's Daddy could have finished the job but he wimped out, Clinton could have done it but he was too busy getting blowjobs from his interns. George Jr steps up to the plate but he's so inept he can't do the job properly...
So what's/who's next?

There was once a time when you could buy opiates and such over the counter at the local pharmacy. The sales were regulated taxed and the quality assured. If you got addicted it was your fault and your fault alone. If you wanted to kick the habit you could get help for that but again it was your decision. Then the government decided that drugs were bad and just like during the Prohibition Era we have organized crime trying to make a quick buck off people's bad habits and weaknesses.
I agree with you that the exploitation, greed and cruelty caused by the illegal drug trade is horrible and should be stopped. The drugs that are being pedalled these days bare little resemblance to what was on the market 30yrs ago. The side effects, DNA mutations and other shit they cause will one day smack us in the face.
And, let's face it this guy, he was a stupid drug smuggler. He got caught, the smart ones bring kilos through each time and get away with it.
How are we going to catch them?

What bugs me about the pay sites is the fact that they encourage scams but are so quick to go after anyone who takes advantage of the loopholes in their programming. I was on a site and discovered a hole that allowed for an interesting exploit. In the hope of making some money I offered to fix it for them. They blew me off so, I took advantage of their error. It was one of these Russian dating sites and most of the women were too good to be true.

The problem with guys who you see up close are the warts and blemishes. A continent away and we will always look better, thinner, more rugged, cooler and less/more like the idiots/geniuses we may be. You have to trust your instincts in these things but, it also helps if you take everything the other person says with a grain of salt until you know them better.
One thing that may help is not to focus on getting a partner, push the envelope in other ways, study something, travel, always do something interesting in your life and you will be pleasantly surprised at what comes of it.

The problem with fingerpointing politicians is nothing new. It's an old game used to fool the media sharks when the politicians have mistakenly chummed the waters and then found out the sacrificial victim has made it to safety.
But, the use of mirrors? I thought they only used them for the old mirror on the wall routine.

All reporting is biased. No matter how impartial a reporter or journalist is supposed to be some of his/her personal bias slips through. Some TV stations like Fox or NHK(Japanese TV) pull no bones about their bias and are forthright about their personal slant on the day's events. Other stations are more inclined to sneak things in and pretend they don't have a bias. Fark and Slashdot are usually good for light fluff, inane comments and sometimes-actually quite seldom, rare insight.

I was reading this over on Slashdot http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/20/1820202
Along with the usual trash and idiotic comments you do find some gems. The big difference between PoF and the $$$ matchmaking sites is the forums. Here we can look at people who are participating and rate them on a large number of factors such as political stance, common interests, their ability to be erudite in a print format and not just on looks and an short blurb on their profile.
I've been lucky in that without even trying to contact members of the opposite sex on this site to have met several interesting people online who appear genuine and are interesting, fully rounded individuals. I've also met quite few people of both sexes who, if I were living in their locale would qualify as good 'drinking buddies'-the sort you would go out with so you could discuss "polytiks, bullshipping and oder topiks wif"
Bottom line from the article is that only matchmaking sites that are registered in the US are fairgame for this action. I predict that we'll see a rush by a large number of sites to change their business address to Greater Lower Slobinia or whatever the name of that country is that Dogbert made use of for fulfillment and websupport.

My guru the Maharrani Hashishyoghurt gave me some good investment advice. Buy stocks in Treehuggers Inc! With the way the world is going only those people dealing in green tech will have cash by the end of the century. I'd believe this to be good advice, except for the fact that she spends her weekends in Harajuku dressed up like Sailor Moon.

Yes, I did exaggerate. I apologize for the unneccessary theatrics.
But to the point the PRC's policies and the former apartheid government of South Africa's policies were very different.
A lot of the violence in S Africa was never actually reported. Sharpesville was but one of many incidents. The government had a policy of brutal repression, it was a policy carried out over a long period and escalated over the years. Add to this the chronic unemployment, lack of educational opportunities and security the Black African faced, it's no surprise that there was unrest.
Tiannamen harked back to the days of the Great Leap and the Gang of Four but, I think it was an abberation. The Chinese Government knows that they are on very shaky ground. Remember that the first troops sent to quell the riot refused to fire upon the crowd. Special cadres of soldiers had to be sent in to do the deed. Afterwards, the Party replaced everyone involved moderate and hardliner alike and are hoping like hell that this will not happen again.
Concerning Kent State, I don't really remember that incident well. We were preparing for my Dad's assignment to Spain. That I remember quite well.

BTW, did you think "Tianenmen" was cool?
I was there. I later wrote a rather nasty story for the wire service I worked for about the whole incident. The students were naive. Angry but, naive... BTW my first trip to China was during the Gang of Four Era. Seeing executions in the street can be a real eyeopener for a teenaged kid.
we could make a big to-do about boycotting S. Africa over apartheid
Big difference, the S African Government had a Tiannamen Square sized incident on a weekly basis. The Chinese Government has a notoriously heavy hand but not on that scale. Note also, I'm not exonerating the PRC Oligarchy from any crimes they have committed.

wasn't 'Tricky****e' on Laugh In?
As for our leader of the Canadian version of the KKK... I've read what he has to say and DON'T agree with it. I don't agree with what YOUR Liberal friends(they must be yours as they aren't mine)
are saying. I'm not very fond of idiotically inept politicians! And they make the most inept look good. As I said before the NDP couldn't manage a paper route. So, they're out!
Maybe we need Kim Jonng Il...
And just a thought... Doesn't Gomery sound like "Gomi" the Japanese word for garbage and other sh*t?

Good points! I have to agree with most of them as in my experience Singapore is one of the better countries in Asia to work or do business with.
Not to sound kiasu but, how long were you a talent?

Did you prefer it when she was whoring for a political party that would draft your *ss and send it to Iraq? If she has what it takes to subvert the will of our neighbour to the south, convine CNN, Microsoft, Pixar and a lot of other big multinationals that they would be better off situating their HQ in say Vancouver, Toronto, Winnepeg, Edmonton, St Catherines, Bancoft or some other Canadian burg, I'd vote for her.
If she got the population up to say 50 million and eased a lot of restrictions so that I could build quality $300 (retail price) laptops in Canada I'd come back.
BTW do you know it only costs US$200 to build a Viao in China?

True and while all this electioneering is going on no business gets done. There are bills to be passed and a house to be put in order but and election will put that all in limbo.
I'm also worried that the next group that gets in will be pro US to the point that they'll do something stupid like kowtow to US demands for a greater involvment in their little war in the Middle East or sucking us into a conflict with North Korea or some other hostile state. Granted our current PM is a sorry excuse for a leader and the choices are between him, a politician who appears to be a card carrying member of the KKK or a leader who would appoint people with the intelligence and mental stability of Michael Jackson into positions of authority.
It7s enough to make me wish Naoto Kan (nDP) http://www.time.com/time/asia/covers/501030922/interview.html or Taro Kono (LDP) http://www.konotaro.org/ were Canadians.

Good question... hmmmmmn....
I'd ressurect PET, he never promised anything in any of his speeches, snuck around with the best of them and was always able to mess up the US's bestlaid plans. He was never popular with the people yet, kept getting re-elected, kept pitbulls like Chretien on a short leash and muzzled unless he wanted some backbencher savaged.
Sean O' Sullivan would have been a good PM, likewise Sheila Copps or Lincoln Alexander. Deifenbaker was always a poor choice-too gullible, he was prey to every shyster that came around and that has been true of every Tory PM since the days of Sir Wilfrid Laurier's ascendancy to the Throne(at least he brought a plunger and his own toiletpaper).

China: The NEXT BIG THING

The Japanese have apologized, they funneled many millions of dollars worth of grants to the Chinese Government during the 70's and built factories and training facilities for the PRC Gov't. Previous to 89 we had good relations with the Chinese. After Tiannamen this changed, the PRC needed a scapegoat and an easy target, Japan is it, we are close by, have a large sector of our economy dependent upon Chinese manufacturing and lack a military capable of fending off the Chinese.
Everytime there has been a trade dispute with China the PRC has attacked the Japanese about their record in WW2, Yasukuni Shrine and the supposed continuing aggression towards the Chinese people. Right now they are pissed about Japan's intention to develope closer ties with the Russian Federation and the joint development project building a pipeline from Vladivostok to the oil and natural gasfields to the west. They have actually demanded that gas be supplied to them at half the going rate!
There are ongoing disputes over chicken and poultry products due to the bird flu, dumping of farm products onto the japanese market and a dustup over the sale of contaminated fish products to several Japanese fish processors (PCB's were off the scale).
So, instead of sitting down and discussing things, they refer to our PM (Elvis) as Adolph Hitler.
I would seriously hate to see what would happen if they got seriously pissed at the US....
