Biggest joke in sports
Posted: 1/12/2009 6:46:05 PM
If only the lions would have had the AFC and NFC west teams scheduled up this year. probably would have gotten 2-3 wins there.

Hard to believe that there were 2 equally crappy divisions this year. usually we only get to see 1 complete clunker.
Of course they did draw the 49ers and got sqaushed in that game. Me thinks they could put up a solid fight vs the Raiders, Chiefs, Rams, and Seabags.

suggestions on college football teams...
Posted: 1/11/2009 5:01:18 PM
Iowa State Cyclones/Big 12 guy here...looking to broaden my college football viewing to more than just a ton of B12 I already watch. Im looking to follow 1 team per conference next fall to get a better feel for all conferences.

Ive found that watching random non Big 12 games over the weekend gives me a fairly poor/skewed perspective of the big picture. Im looking at following a team thats somewhat of a conference bench mark or else an up and coming team.

Throw out some suggestions. Im not interested in following the most powerful or prestigious programs in each conference (ie: Florida/USC/tOSU) and quite frankly a few middle of the road schools would be fine with me.

So far I'm eying.....
B12(south)- I already watch a ton of Texas Tech as is
B10- Wisconsin(possibly Minnesota, and NO...NOT IOWA! I like NW but they resemble a Big 12 team too much)
Pac 10- Oregon State(for sure)
Mountain West-TCU(most likely)
WAC- Boise State (probably gets the most Tv time?)

ACC-? North carolina(most likely...possibly Va Tech or Wake Forrest)
SEC-? Ole Miss(impressed with game vs T Tech, return a ton of starters and play Chiziks Auburn team)
Big East-Pitt or USF

Mac--Buffalo(Maybe Ohio...former Cyclone QB Phillip Bates is transfering there)
Sunbelt-Troy(hey, they almost beat LSU.....)
Conference USA-Houston????

And no...I dont want to watch Notre Dame.

oteric. I'm following you. I'll see what tweaking I can do. I did feel it was long. i tried to break it up to make it read otherwise, but i may be wrong....

msdenissen3..interesting point about a fun hang out guy but not BF material. I'm not very sappy, and honestly a bit emotionally aloof so your observation could be right in some regards.

what do you suggest to paint this picture a bit different?

I will 2nd, 3rd and 4th the strapping young lad reccomendations. "City" is pretty out of control, but i do prefer the skitzophrenic feel of "alien" instead. regardless SYL is solid.

I'm a huge fan of Krisiun....conquers of Armageddon is a fairly fast album yet doesn't get you lost in the mix. They were a bit overbearing during this period and lacked much in the department of tempo changes.

Morbid Angel-Covenant is sort of in the same vien in terms of the listener not getting lost. Covennat features its share of dirge riff, and has a nice dark atmosphere to it. Death metal classic for sure.

Vital Remains-Dawn of the apocalypse is a stellar album with multiple part changes and lots of blazing fast riffs.

New rules that will have an impact on the 2008 NFL season.
Posted: 5/14/2008 6:04:36 AM
Defer kick off to the 2nd half.....now were talking. Always thought it was better to let the 1st half play out then take the extra offensive possession (theoretically speaking) to start the 2nd. Kicking off and trailing by 7 or 10 makes the hill look all that much larger.

Just released yesterday. Only a couple spins into it, but it seems a bit timid and tame compared to earlier efforts.

Perhaps I havent locked into the mood of it yet. Its been so long since Almalgamut was released that I cant recall how my early reactions were to that album.

Your lists of interests are maxed out and that fine, but the "about me" section is as bare as ol mother hubbards cupboard. Me thinks you could pump up the volume on that somehow.

More pics as well. And if your going to go the shower curtain route at least have a large knife in hand [/bates motel pic discussion]......j/k

Regardless, it looks to paint a fairly solid picture concerning the outskirts of who you are. Perhaps a full body pic could be added?

I can say that being serious rarely takes precedent in my life, so i get where your coming from.

With that admission, my bills gets paid, my house doesnt get foreclosed on and my trainer says im in superior cardivascular health, so im not exactly "screw up of the month".

@ ursalamajor

Ive encountered a few women that came on strong right out the gate (in emails) but sorta fizzled recently. Whatever the reason being im not sure. Maybe they werent serious about a relationship or otherwise. A few others I'd made contact with unfortunately live 3-4 hours on the other side of the state. Its not like im reeling in a gaggle of ladies nearby.

Perhaps the Miss Cleo line for humor could be changed up to something more current. Noted and will find a suitable substitution.

My facial hair is my business. Why dont you buck up some photos to show off your wares and show me the key to success then?

guys that listen to heavy metal: are they dateable?
Posted: 5/13/2008 11:15:35 AM
Perhaps this thread was created in regards to the typical "metal enthusiast" stereotype that we (as metal lovers) have to deal with. I cant disagree though, as metal has been the victim of some ill stereotypes placed upon those uninformed about the genre.

If anyone wants to know what makes me tick in regards to my affinity with the likes of Death metal, its quite simple....my ears demand a challenge. I like to experience music at speeds i can't quite wrap my mind around. Im a mark for complex compositions and multiple part changes. And most importanlty, metal is about the only music that provokes any sort of feeling in me. Music in my head becomes a landscape of sorts either plush and green or cold and barren.....regardless it creates a feel.

Is the guy who idolizes gangster rap dateable? Is the guy who cleaves to the ideals of drinking like a manaic outlined in some country music lyrics dateable?

If nothing else my music of choice has been a minor nuisance for most all of my girlfriends over the last 15 years or so. Ive found that mostly all my GF's eventually found at least a band, or style they liked quite a bit.

metal
Posted: 3/14/2008 4:54:55 PM
I can assume this thread is about Metallica? Honestly, I let bygones be bygones and have pretty much forgotten about them all together.

They paid thier dues and gave us a couple masterpieces. Most metal bands can only say they paid thier dues....

Im sorta switching gears on this thread(sorry).....Furthermore, where was metallica going to go after the black album? A part of me thinks they woulda been has-beens holding onto some shread of metal by the time it was all said and done anyways. They dumped us/me, and i got over it and found someone else.

Slayer "kept it real" (hehehehehe) and they garnered about 1/20th of the success(if that) that Metallica did, and id guess those guys are all fairly well off. I don't believe Metallica's initial purpose was to line thier pockets from day 1, but it just happened that way. Metal is about touring and not sales, and quite frankly Metallica aint metal anymore. Go figure.

Never married & no kids
Posted: 3/10/2008 8:28:23 AM
My mom enjoyed marriage so much she tried it out 4 times.
My dad enjoyed marriage so much he also tried it out 4 times.
Thats 7...yes, SEVEN combined marriages between my 2 parents.

Need i explain why im 31 and have not been engaged, married, or had children? I suggest people dig deeper to understand the reasons why.

Its nothing Ive considered jumping into without a lot of thought. I'm not over the hill(just yet) have my own home, and no baggage(crazy ex wives or whatever) to dump on anyone else. I'm free to travel as i see fit and spend my time doing whatever healthy lesiure I see fit. I feel I have gotten a lot out of my youth and had my share of fun. I know a fair share of people who can't say the same because they got married/had kids, and thier life became not thier own. Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is. My situation aint all bad ladies....

Female singers in hard rock/metal.
Posted: 3/9/2008 10:47:00 AM
Im exceedingly suspect of female vocalists in the metal realm. Not so because of thier talents but moreso the intent in which they are used. Id like to think that Angela Gassow(sp?) is not just part of some marketing scheme to cater to guys.

I hold the integrity of heavy metal near and dear to my heart and have some major disdain if I feel they(women) are being used as a sexual device to sell records, and gain larger crowds on tour. In any other setting I couldnt care less about sex as a selling point.

Metal should always = integrity of the music. Let pop rock and rap music use near naked women as thier lure if they so need be to cover up thier lack of ability to sell records and get noteriety. Let the music speak for itself.

I can say I was very surprised that the pats took thier sweet time in re-signing Moss. Maybe its was just a formality that he was going back to them, but if they lost him, they would drop quite a ways down the ladder in the the power struggle of the AFC.

All though dropping back down to 12-4(without moss) still isnt too bad.

So are you any better off by secretly falling in love with him and hiding it? As much as this situation puts the hammer down on your hopes and will sting for a good while it was inevitably neccesary. Sorry to say it, but if feelings arise put em out there and take the risk.

I have 16 or 17 and i can hide all with a shirt and pants. im not a big fan of girls with inked up forearms, and definitely not a fan of a woman who's got an ex boyfriends name tattooed on her boob. long story about the things you dont find out about right off the bat.

Why people feel the need to lie and decieve.
Posted: 10/14/2007 10:27:35 AM
Be leary of those who may not be ready to move on from a past ex. Ive learned to go through a series of questions here and there inconspicuosly to determine whos still hanging onto an ex and who isnt.

you will more than likely be taken for a ride if you try to start something with someone like that. In my experiences some of these woman didnt mean harm per se but they werent forthcoming with thier situation. maybe they felt they had the right to an easy out since they didnt voice commitment or whatever.

regardless, some feelings get trampled on.

was Michigan robbed?
Posted: 12/8/2006 6:16:53 PM
1st off, i want to state that i dont care who plays OSU.

The BCS is not all human decided. those 6 rankings sytems or whatever that get cumulitively added up to create 1/3 of the official BCS rankings are number crunching crazy. The extra game for Florida and beating Arkansas had just as much to do with thier #2 rank as some of the media/coaches flip flopping.

I just dont see a playoff happening in college football. The powers that be are too anal to give in to that idea. From what i know the major conferences get tons of money by sending thier schools to the prestigious bowls and thats prolly good enough for them. I can assume that the big 10 or whoever would fear losing a lot of money if they didnt have a school in the top 4 or 8 team playoff. if its an 8 team playoff then those 8 are accounted for...then just exactly what kind of match-up do we get for the rose bowl? probably a game with much lower ratings that what.

I do believe that if they at least had a 2 vs 3 game in mid december as a play in game for the NCG that A LOT of problems could be resolved.

and i'd love to see them do away with the dang preseason rankings. seriously was notre dame a joke as #2. hell, there was even speculation in week 1 and 2 that maybe they should be #1, and we found out later that was not true. please, just wait a week or 2 before the BCS needs to start its ranking then have the media and coaches rank everyone.

while theres lots of unhappy people around here that drag this place thru the mud, i have gotten a little back from here. Sometimes i swear POF should stand for "pessimists on forums" from half the crap i read here, so i thought id shed a some light on the good things that come from here.

been hanging around here for over a year, and while this place hasnt produced a dating/relationship situation for me,(i do better without the internet i guess) but i will say that i gained a life long friend named Amie.

I gotta make the hour and half drive here soon to go work on some elctrical and plumbing at her house. i guess she gained a handyman in process. Im always welcome to crash at her house, and im allowed to laugh at her when she losses her ass at the casino. Needles to say, i sprung for the breakfast buffett cause i managed to break even. Posted: 12/3/2006 4:01:15 PM
i think guys are sorta hypocritcal about thier infatuation with women who like sports. i used to be one of em. i thought a girl i could watch sports with would be great. i met a girl who i then found out loved to watch sports.......and it became painful in a hurry. we watched the dang Twins play baseball about every other night on TV. i wanted to be shot.

i guess i learned its cool to share an occasional game together, but thats about it. maybe it was just cause i wasnt a twins fan or even a huge baseball fan. the relationship didnt last till football season so its hard to say about that.

Black metal...
Posted: 8/6/2006 10:28:12 PM
Ha! i always laugh at the accusations directed towards the so-called black metal sell-outs. yeah, i get the whole slant about satyricon, but seriously the progression has been in the works for quite a few albums while they have experimented with more rock based foundations. why couldnt people recognize that and see it coming from a mile away? I did, and it didnt really bother me. They did ease us into it no? But i suppose to come that fact matters little in the grand scheme of things.

however it does bum me out that Frost has all that talent and utilizes absolutely zero of it behind the kit on Now Diabolical. With Satyricon i can still feel the BM asthetic in the music, even though a lot of the venom is not in thier bite.

As for Dissection, i havent heard much good for reviews, but from what i understand thats not really a group effort per se. Maybe something that should not have been released under the moniker of Dissection perhaps? I'll have to spend some $$$ and investigate.

Black metal...
Posted: 6/3/2006 9:32:05 AM
Good topic here for sure. The ultimate factor is that some bands are a friggin assembly line, that are always reliable with rehashing thier albums. Other bands have done very well spreading thier wings and flying in other directions even though they may have lost the core audience.

I for one love the direction Behemoth, and Satyricon have taken with recent albums. Behemoth have become quite...uh...epic(?), and i like the "black and roll" of Satyricon. Satyricon gets bashed a lot, but the core and attitude of BM is still there, just its much more accessible. However black metal wasnt my bag from day 1, so ive always been very objective towards that genre. I cant exactly call it my own, so i tend to really like some of those albums on the fringes, just as much as the true scandinavian stuff.

Now death metal on the other hand...thats my roots, going back to 93. I totally ate up Carcass on Heartwork, and that was quite a large progression from thier previous material. Its what i would consider the pinnacle of death metal albums. Of course heartwork was my 1st taste of them, but i think swansong was a decent follow up though. Swansong furthered the idea, but lost some of the bite. I like it and I believe they could have released another quality album after that, but i will say i fear "too much" progression. Swansong to me started to get very simple, and that was kind of a large departure from the carcass we all know and love. I dislike progression when they "totally" lose thier roots. I believe Carcass by swansong had lost thier original identity, but it did align itself closely with heartworkk, that is a masterpiece of all time. Carcass over time(more-so near the end) were a classic catch 22, but they were a special case, cause they always seemed to be heads above the rest no mater what they put out. I still say this discussion is baited.

I believe the moral of this is subjectively "to each thier own". some bands change well for you and others dont. I havent really liked a slayer album since the punk covers. id welcome them to revamp thier sound. i may still think they were over the hill, but at least i would have gotten a different angle from thier music. However i would gladly accept remakes in the form of 5 reign in blood albums, 4 south of heavens, and a handful of seasons instead of what they did put out.

im down with whatever bands try, and if they fail for me, there are hundreds and hundreds in the collection to pick up the slack.

Black metal...

good question about emperor. its kind of baited question though, cause if they were able to produce a similar album thats blew the doors off everything, then yes.

however if they were never able to top it, or even come close to duplicating, then probably not, and progression would be fine.

Black metal has branched out(for its own good) but i seriously doubt it will ever return to a solely purer form(that i believe you speak of).

I follow death metal much more than BM, so i am unable to speak on wether or not the scene is dead. I will say that BM grew a bit when it started to embrace DM into its songs. with out that change i believe it would have grown totally stagnant.

Religious/Evil Themes in Rock/Metal Music

and 1 more thing before bed time. the metal i listen to only draws a small obscure crowd. seriously, you either get it or you dont, and most dont. well not to the degree i do. Do you think there are not images, and ideas brought on by more popular forms of music? These corrporations are doing a damn good job of mind control. The point is a band like Immolation is only gonna reach maybe 50,000 people tops(worldwide), but other forms of music reach millions and millions just in america.

im not saying any style is worse than the other, but theres many socially ill things going on out there in the mediums that are music besides heavy metal.

-Country has been known to glamorize alcohol usuage, and red neckery(ive heard racsist songs listening to real old country).
-Pop has been known to glamorize fashion, and things like that. think your 13 year old daughter dressing slutty like the latest female pop icon.
-Rap has been known to glamorize sexism, drug use, and violence

its all bad, so live in a bunker 100 feet below the earth and listen to Burl Ives.

Religious/Evil Themes in Rock/Metal Music

HEAVY METAL has always dealt lyrically with the under belly of society.

it's probably a condition it will not/can not ever shake. The music is aggressive and the lyrical themes sorta need to match the tunes. its just the way it is.

Im not sure Raining Blood woulda been the same song if replaced by michael bolton lyrics. Unless the Bolten lyrics were changed from when a man loves a woman, to when a man fists a woman......sorry i couldnt help myself.

I own tons and tons of death metal cd's, and many have some sort of anti christianity themes and such, but thats the world we live in. The world has seen some bad sh*t go down with-in some religions and churches over the years and people are really becoming skeptical. Also the moral fabric of americans in general is going down the tubes, so music, and movies tend convey those ideas. whats the saying life imitates art, and vice versa.

Also metal is not glamourous and glittzy like pop music. metal also has some roots in being down and out. poverty comes to mind. it has always had a f*ck you atitude .It's rebellion and a form of anti-confomization, so metals ideology will always be a tad off color.

the bottom line, the worlds going to hell in a handbasket, so gimme my damn metal before its all over with.
