GLBT Pride in Ontario
Posted:

I used to be on some employment equity committees at work and one group I joined to find out about resources to promote was called Egale. It's a national site, but from there, they might have links to more localized groups. Also, if you go to Pride Toronto, not sure if that's the right title, but there would be sponsors and links connected to that as well. One other idea is via government sites, there are national linkages that again might have more localized chapters.
Hope it's helpful, good luck.

FISHSTOCK 2008 - Pictures and Kudos!

What a great time everyone! I had an amazing time - thanks to everyone that worked on the event and came out to support us.
Silkie - I thoroughly enjoyed working with you on this project and getting to know you so much better. Great minds.... lol. You worked extremely hard on this one, but it was worth it.
JackBNimble and Muzic - you guys are unbelievable - great advice every time on all the technical aspects because you are great musicians. Who knew what a simple thread like "any musicians out there" could lead to! I'm thankful this site is here to make these connections possible.
From last year and this year I made a heap of friends and I am so grateful.
Thanks to all the volunteers - MsChar, Syllie, Tiltedhalo- you rock! Also thanks to those who came out to support us, RedSkye, Mystrygal and all the rest - we all had a great time.
To the band - wow, it's been a wonderful pleasure playing with such great talent, I am really going to miss all of you.
Folks seemed to have had a great time, I'm glad I was part of it. Like what's -his-name from the A-Team says: " I love it when a plan comes together"....lol.
So Silkie... what's our next event? Lol...

Hey folks, small correction to the directions from the East and from 403, there was a bit of info missing:
From the East -
-401W to exit 238b - Woodstock - this takes to you Highway 2 West, which becomes Dundas Street once in Woodstock, just ride that in until you are downtown and look for Good Time Charlies on the left.
OR
- stay on the 401W to exit 232 for HWY 59 N, toward WOODSTOCK
- follow on that road into town, you are going towards downtown
- turn left onto Dundas Street (Hwy 2)
- look for Good Time Charlies a few blocks down on the left.
It's going to be a great night!

any suggestions on best Ont places to move near or on water
Posted:
5/25/2008 8:15:44 PM
I am from Sarnia, it's a great place to grow up or for empty nesters and beyond. Lots of beaches, pretty decent weather year round and even if it does snow, the city is pretty good about cleaning it up quickly. Bayfest is becoming a bigger festival every year, huge names there this year. Best pizza anywhere! Real estate is a lot cheaper. My parents have a two storey home they rent out and it was only about 85,000 or so to buy... so there should be lots in your range. Also, nearby smaller communities still on the water and minutes from Sarnia are Bright's Grove (Mike Weir's home) and Camlachie...
I read the other posts, but I think a trip to Sarnia to scope it out would be worth it.
Good luck!

Hi Funfish,
Here is a link to the original thread, for the event held last June. Basically, we are a band made up of POF members and we got the Peel Pub to host a POF event for us, where we were the night's entertainment, it was very fun. Check it out:

I was one of the singers in the band last year and I definitely liked the size of the venue and the food was good. I live in Cambridge, so either area is likely good for me. Maybe going west will bring more folks from other cities, like London or Windsor.
I am looking forward to singing again this year, see you all there, wherever it is!

Normally I wouldn't change what I said, originally i signed up to bring hot dogs and buns, but with setting up the band, we are getting there very early and I don't have a cooler, so I am going to bring items that don't need refrigeration.

KUDOS AND PICS FOR FISHSTOCK 2007
Posted:
6/13/2007 7:28:35 PM
I know I have said lots on hotmail, but couldn't resist a comment here, too! Thanks to all the volunteers, especially to Char and Hal, holy crap you guys are fantastic, you really set the atmosphere for the whole thing. You two jumped right in with both feet and knocked it out for us, I really appreciate your hard work and dedication.
Martyn, I can't thank you enough for your welcoming attitude and words of encouragement, you helped me realize a dream and it was sweet. I completely agree with everyone, you were a great leader and definitely a fantastic performer!
Kevin, thanks for being a great bassist on my songs, you did Lenny proud!
Renee, Cheryl, Julie, Christina, Lynda, Cathy, Cindy, Andy and Frankie, much love for the back up and the encouragement, I was definitely in great company vocally and musically!
Frankie, you made me laugh out loud with that Papa Smurf comment, but Pat, I know exactly what he means, so glad you were there, adding your unique flavour, muchas gracias! You are a Divo for sure and I think I have a case of Diva Feva now that I have finally opened my mouth... lol.
Mark, (our own personal Ringo) you were the best drummer in the band, oh wait....yeah, you totally rocked it!
Brian, my god, I am consciously searching for songs with more guitar solos! Thanks for blowing everyone away you Prince- Jimmy- Slash-Santana and whoever else is awesome on the guitar, you!
I made some great new friends and like Martyn said, that was the point, so I just feel like I am walking on air from the singing, but now I have great people all around me, too.
Can't wait for the next event!

That was funny! I found the " no emails" thing, meh, I could take it or leave it. To me, I don't think it will be all that useful, but I don't think anyone not receiving an email in one day is a loser, although I can see how it could be seen that way.
Happy fishing folks

American Idol!! Any one watching it tonight?
Posted:

I agree, unfortunately, it seems like they enjoy focussing more on those who lack talent than those who have it.. I liked the girl with the long curly hair that sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow, she was good...
They did not do Prince proud, that's for sure...
From the previews they showed, it looks like it will be more of the same....
only 17 through out of 10,000...

American Idol!! Any one watching it tonight?
Posted:

I will be watching, too! I also like Canadian Idol. I just love the singing and I really admire all the people who have the guts to get up and sing in front of crowds like that, wish I had the guts.... Each year they extend the eligibility age, but it's always a year too late for me... lol, guess I would have to wait for the "Over-the-hill" Idol to come back and I'm only 35...but it makes sense, they want a tighter age group so that they can ascertain that folks have had approximately the same level of experience/exposure...
I find I usually agree with most of what Simon says, he is very knowldgeable, the only times I disagree is when he makes comments unrelated to their singing to put them down or is unnecessarily mean. I agree that being direct is needed when some folks just don't get it, but being cruel is not cool.
I thought he was out of line a couple of times last year, hopefully he has cleaned that up a bit and gets back to just evaluating the singing...
Enjoy folks!

From nice guy to jerk in under 10 seconds
Posted:

That sucks, I can empathize with how that must have felt, but why ask what you did? Perhaps ask him the tough questions, like why he lashed out at you at all and especially in such a way and then if you think he gives you a reasonable answer and you decide to forgive him, I suggest you let him know how you felt, that it's not acceptable and won't be tolerated. Are there any other red flags that you aren't recognizing? I think if you allow it to go undiscussed, it will open the door for more occasions.
These are just my thoughts based only on the details you provided. Only you know your experience with him and whether it is worth continuing the relationship.
Good luck with it - I hope you can find some resolution.

Wow! Gay Cowboys???
Posted:
12/31/2006 9:06:30 PM
Nope Tom Selleck isn't gay, but John Wayne was... go figure huh?
I actually saw this movie while on a first date with a very macho guy and yes, I think at first he was trying to humour me, but he commented afterwards that he did really like it, especially after I had put it in the perspective of a "forbidden love" theme, much like Romeo and Juliet.... this story is as old as the hills, but just told with new characters.
I think it is important to support these kinds of movies until it isn't such a big deal anymore, because it really shouldn't be in 2006...
To the other comments about what heterosexual men/women find sexy about two women or two men, I think it's subjective to each of us. To me personally, two men are far sexier than two women, maybe because it includes an openness of expression of affection that men are normally conditioned against showing, I don't know...
Just my thoughts, OP, glad you liked the film....
Happy New year everyone!

Come and Meet Me
Posted:
12/11/2006 7:07:55 PM
I have done the cross-border thing and I have also been the one to drive to meet the guy. I think there are no rules for that anymore, it's a personal preference. How can I expect to be considered a modern woman with equal rights if I then continue to go back to these "rules" about making the guy come here or expecting him to pay for everything? C'mon folks, let's step into the 90's. Of course, if a guy offered to come here, that's great, but I don't "expect" it and wouldn't fault him for suggesting otherwise. I personally love to drive and really, folks who live in Toronto, I wouldn't assume they have a car... I probably wouldn't if I lived there.
I think meeting half way is an appropriate suggestion, but not required. I agree with the others about this person in particular though, he shouldn't have said that if you want to meet, you HAVE to go there... that's not cool. But there is nothing more unsafe about crossing the border to meet someone, or meeting someone in your own town... how is it different than if you went on vacation and met someone?
I think of myself as a modern woman and I don't "expect" to be treated any differently than I would treat another person. Man or woman, shouldn't matter. Just my thoughts, I hope you enjoy Canada if you decide to pop over!

How would you respond to this????
Posted:
12/8/2006 4:56:09 PM
OP, I think you were very gracious, in spite of your being offended, which I can totally understand. If it's not an issue, why mention it, right? Oh and I think I figured out what RIDIM was, I think he was saying he has rhythym... that's my guess anyway.
I, too have had emails that were so illiterate and not coherent, that even if I wanted to respond, I couldn't. I have also had emails from guys for whom English is obviously their second lanuguage. However, I find that I can still understand what they are trying to say, even with a few spelling errors, but there are usually only a few here and there.
With the message you received, it would have been tempting to comment negatively, but really, like others have said and as you obviously considered, what would that have served?
I recently asked a guy what he was looking for in a woman and he said "white" within the first three qualities... BIG turn off for me...
Cheers everyone and happy fishing, I've still got my net out... lol.

Does it freak you out when someone is to anxious to meet?
Posted:
12/2/2006 6:43:02 PM
It doesn't freak me out if someone is anxious to meet after a couple of emails, I mean, it's more than you get compared with meeting someone in real life somewhere, right? If you meet someone in a bar or an event, it's still "cold", so I am not seeing the concern? I would only agree to meet in a public place, like a coffee pub, but no, I don't see it as a red flag. The only time I get freaked out is if I get an email for the first time from someone and all it says is "where do you live" or "do you wanna meet"...I definitely delete those.
I think it's best to get a feel for someone over a couple of emails, maybe a phone call, but not necessarily and then go for it, what have I got to lose in meeting someone?
I don't hold any expectations, I just enjoy talking to a new person, see if there is a connection. To each their own, though, you have to do what feels comfortable to you.
Good luck everyone.

Male Birth Control...for real
Posted:

I think it's a nice idea, but frankly, nothing has changed for either side, if you want to make sure you don't get pregnant / get someone pregnant, you do what you have to. I would not rely on someone else to keep me from getting pregnant, they haven't changed who carries the baby yet, so when that happens, we'll talk....until then, I am fine with being in control of that....

Dr. Phil...London ladies watch the 29th (Wed)
Posted:
11/29/2006 7:15:53 PM
I watched both episodes, with him on it, didn't realize he was from here. I agree with the earlier posts, he did handle himself with dignity and was very well spoken. I thought it took a certain amount of guts to come on the show the first time and frankly, while I disagree with his choices in how he represented himself to the women as being exclusive or not, I don't fault him for dating an 18 year old, it's his choice and she's legal. I mean, sure, I can't imagine what they would have in common, but to each his own. She might want to question herself why she would want to be involved with a man his age, even thinking he was 29 isn't that much different than 36...
I also agree that his dating / personal life has no effect on his professional life, unless he was her psychologist or in any kind of position of influence, so whomever the journalist was that wrote the article was out of line, in my opinion.

Posted:

If he is consciously doing it on purpose, then sure it's dishonest, but I have some friends who, after a few drinks, don't realize their accent is coming out. It's only when they are relaxed and kind of tipsy and then it's very cute. I wouldn't consider that dishonest, so for me, it depends on the circumstances.
I definitely love accents, my favs are Scottish, Jamaican and Cuban.

when somebody gives you a phone number and they never return calls what do you do
Posted:
11/15/2006 7:33:49 PM
Glad to know I am not the only one who thinks it sucks when someone makes a point of giving you his number and then doesn't return your calls, especially when I didn't even ask for the number...I will call twice and maybe even send an email, after that, that's it, snooze you lose!
You can SAY you're interested, but it's what you DO that sends the real message. My name is not Wile E Coyote and I will not chase anyone. I don't try to be chased either, if I like you, I tell you, it's that simple. We're talking common courtesy, which I would like to think is still more common than not.
Great post, it was a good reminder for me not to wait around beyond reason...
Redneckhippy, the suggestion to email the number to charities was hilarious! Verrry tempting, if I was the vengeful type!

Happily, only one, but I was still surprised, it was cardsharp and I have always known it to be cardshark...
That was really interesting, I am going to share it with my friends, thanks, for this one.

I also sing, been looking for back up or duet opportunities ( a little chicken to sing alone)... I can sing soul, r&b, jazz, big band, maybe even a little latin....?
Anyway, sounds like fun and I know a few people who can play guitar and sing other stuff like Sarah Harmer and folksy stuff like that.

When I say no games......

Ascension hit the nail on the head, the discovery of the lie is much more distressing than the truth behind the lie. I think the most annoying ones are those about pointless things or if someone lies to you because they assume you are going to react a certain way.
Delaying the truth about a larger issue until trust is established is a different thing in my opinion.
Playing games is usually lose-lose anyway....no idea why folks do it.

How about we have the first date at your place???

Helios, I agree with you, it wasn't cool for the guy to suggest her place, regardless of whether she is a good host or not. I would never suggest that to a guy either. Once I feel comfortable about the guy, I have invited him over to my place and did the "red carpet" thing, cooked dinner, nice music, etc...but that isn't the first meet for sure.

Drummer girl, I agree with you and have been in similar situations. I would not do a first meet at my place or his. To share a recent experience, I met a guy at a neutral location the first time and then the next time, he wanted to come over to my place and you are right, it is more difficult to maintain an "only getting to know you" kind of atmosphere. Even though we talked about it just being about hanging out and talking, and we had talked on line at length, I also found myself in the position of having to be ridiculously direct and actually had to repeat myself a couple of times as though waiting 15 minutes between suggestions was going to change anything. In that instance, I also had not extended the invitation, he had suggested it and you know, I probably won't let that happen again, I will make sure I do the inviting. I felt pressured and I didn't like it at all, not in a scary way, but just annoying and it had the exact opposite effect that he was trying to achieve.
I think everyone should do what they feel comfortable with, for me, I just think it has the potential to give off the wrong impression and could become a difficult situation safety-wise.
Thanks for bringing this one up DG

I have only been to one tour at Strewn Winery, in NOTL, a work friend organized it. Depending on the date, I would be interested and likely some of my friends would be, too.
Grape idea!

Anyone Try the Myers Briggs Test?

Hi there, cool thread. I have done the complete test a couple of times and I am an ENTJ. The interesting thing we did with it was do have everyone on my work team at the time, including our manager, do it and then we saw our differences and similarities. It really improved our understanding of how each other worked and the perspective they were working from, so it improved our work dynamic. I think it would also be interesting to do it as a family... anytime you have an insight into understanding yourself or others better, it can really have an impact on your interpersonal relationships.
And yes, it is only a snapshot in time of where you are, it definitely changes as you grow and learn, so it can be fun to do it once in a while to see the changes if any.

I agree with most of your items, I would take care of my parents (all 4 of them...), my sister and then take a bunch of friends on a long trip all over the place, donate to charities and invest, cuz after all 5 mill doesn't go where it used to...
