against. as it is my understanding that the armed forces are having difficulty meeting their quotas, it seems to me that those who do support it can enlist. (enlistment age was recently increased to 42!) also seems that those with prior military emperience would be desperately needed.

More data from AP
-Median household income in the most devastated neighborhood was $32,000, or $10,000 less than the national average.
-Two in 10 households in the disaster area had no car, compared with 1 in 10 in nationwide.
-Nearly 25 percent of those living in the hardest-hit areas were below the poverty line... 4.5 percent in the disaster area received public assistance...
-About 60 percent of the 700,000 people in the three dozen neighborhoods were minority...
-One in 100 households in the most affected areas didn't have decent plumbing, which, according to the Census, includes running hot and cold water, a shower or bath and an indoor toilet...
-12 percent were single-mother households

In an extreme act of looting, one group actually stole a bus to escape ravaged areas in Louisiana.
Eighteen-year-old Jabbor Gibson jumped aboard the bus as it sat abandoned on a street in New Orleans and took control.
"I just took the bus and drove all the way here...seven hours straight,' Gibson admitted. "I hadn't ever drove a bus."
The teen packed it full of complete strangers and drove to Houston. He beat thousands of evacuees slated to arrive there.

The 18-year-old who ensured their safety could find himself in a world of trouble for stealing the school bus.

Aid Offered to New Orleans by 20 countries, Bush refuses!

On "Good Morning America, George W. Bush stated, "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it."
The U.S. State Department said offers so far had come from Belgium, Canada, Russia, Japan, France, Germany, Britain, China, Australia, Jamaica, Honduras, Greece, Venezuela, the Organisation of American States, NATO, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, South Korea, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Assistance ranged from medical teams, boats, aircraft, tents, blankets, generators and cash donations.
According to Australian Prime Minister John Howard,""This idea that 'well they're the most powerful, wealthiest country in the world' -- but when something like this strikes, the poor and the vulnerable are the same all around the world."
Also, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in a letter to Bush offering medical teams: "During these difficult times, we, the people of Israel stand firmly by your side in a show of solidarity and friendship."

and
Sharon said the teams and equipment could be ready in 24 hours.

and
A specialized urban search and rescue team from Vancouver will be joining the rescue efforts in Louisiana in the wake of hurricane Katrina.
B.C. Solicitor General John Les said the province decided to send Vancouver Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) after officials in Louisiana asked for help.
"We're the first non-U.S.-based team to be requested," said Les. "They're going to be helping as many people as they can."
CTV Vancouver has learned that the team will board a plane Wednesday night heading to Lafayette, Louisiana, where local authorities will direct them to devastated areas.
Sounds great! Except for one problem -- this team wasn't allowed to fly into the US, blocked by Homeland Security from entering.
CTV (Canadian TV) said that support was offered from Canada. Planes are ready to load with food and medical supplies and a system called "DART" which can provide fresh water and medical supplies is standing by. Department of Homeland Security as well as other U.S. agencies were contacted by the Canadian government requesting permission to provide help. Despite this contact, Canada has not been allowed to fly supplies and personnel to the areas hit by Katrina.

McCain to Hagel: Iraq Not Vietnam
Posted:
8/30/2005 2:48:50 AM
Dan, I went to a conference a couple weeks ago. One of the speakers was a media analyst/Ph.D. that compared the media coverage in Iraq to the media coverage during the Vietnam War--Nixon's presidency. One of the things that he described that were common to both was the theory that both the RMN and the GWB administration had the same attitude re: the reporting of the war(s). Specifically the importance of appearing resolute, not ?ing intelligence reports, decisions, or errors in intelligence was a priority. In short, the mindset of public policy was, "If only the public was more supportive, the war would go better." That was a direct quote from the speaker--I have it in my notes. This also seems to be the attitude that GWB's administration is also taking. Look at the fact that the anti-war activists are criticized more severly now than they were in the '60's. Also, legislation that has been passed, such as the Patriot Act, is raising serious Consititutional issues that are not yet resolved.
In short, the administrations involved in each have admitted the similarities in each as they are using the same/similar tactics.
Also, the public opinion polls that were cited, demonstrate similar %ages in opinions re: pro/anti-war. I agree with you. It is necessary to bring all of the troops in Iraq home now, alive, as opposed to dragging this out. And I am also a bit suprised at John McCain's response to Hagel, considering McCain's history as a POW.
It may be possible that he is attempting to capitatlize on the pro-war sentiment in this country in an attempt for the republican nomination, by appearing more moderate than those in power now.

Pat Robertson - A christian bloodlust for murder?
Posted:
8/28/2005 9:12:47 PM
CARACAS, Venezuela, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday his government would take legal action against Pat Robertson and potentially seek his extradition after the U.S. evangelist called for Washington to assassinate the South American leader...
"I announce that my government is going to take legal action in the United States ... to call for the assassination of a head of state is an act of terrorism." Chavez said in a televised speech.
Venezuela could seek Robertson's extradition under international treaties and take its claim to the United Nations if the Bush administration did not act...
U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said political assassination was against the law and was not U.S. policy...

Found it!
Significant historical events, court cases, and ideas that have shaped our current system of constitutional First Amendment jurisprudence:
http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/about.aspx?item=First_Amendment_timeline
1942
The U.S. Supreme Court determines "fighting words" are not protected by the First Amendment. In Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, the Court defines "fighting words" as "those which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of peace." The Court states that such words are "no essential part of any exposition of ideas, and are of such slight social value as a step to truth that any benefit that may be derived from them is clearly outweighed by the social interest in order and morality."

Isn't advocating the assasination of a Democratically elected leader illegal? (threatening/fighting words) If that is the case, Robertson may not be protected by the First Amendment this time.

GOP Senator Says Iraq Looking Like Vietnam
Posted:
8/22/2005 8:44:51 PM
Iraq was on the brink of a civil war as of June 28. With the increasing death tolls and conflicting statements re: the drafting of the Iraq Constitution, its a good bet that there is a full scale civil war now. Similar to Iraq, the death toll and the severity of injuries in this war for oil have increased, and do not show any sign of letting up.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/4700577.stm
Also, the armed forces have increased the age for enlisting to 42.
John McHugh, R-N.Y...believes that what the Pentagon needs is an increase in personnel to cut the workload on active and reserve service members.
Rep. Vic Snyder of Arkansas, the subcommittee’s ranking Democrat, claimed, “Recruitment is a challenge right now.”
http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-983408.php
Remember Nixon proclaimed, "Peace with Honor!" and pulled all US troops out of Vietnam and let the Vietnamese fend for themselves? The exact same thing is going to happen in the Middle East. And it is ridiculous to ask the youth of this country to risk their lives in Iraq, just like it was in Vietnam.
If any person feels that a US presence in Iraq is that vital, there are military recruiters who would love to hear from them.

George Will, William F. Buckley, many respectable conservatives and Republicans did not want to invade Iraq. Congress went along with the Pres.
Congress is controlled by Republicans, who paid no attention to George Will, William F. Buckley, nor their consituents, as they supported the invasion of Iraq.
We need to look at Iraq as an incredibly longterm responsibility
Where have I heard that before? Now I remember--it attempted to rationalize the 58,000+ killed in Vietnam.

Poll: I Believe We Must Remain In Iraq Indefinitely. What Do you Think?
Posted:

I believe the Invasion of Iraq was a colossal mistake
Definitely agreed. The US has no business attempting to invade and rebuild another country when so many major cities in the US need to be rebuilt.
if we leave Iraq as unstable as it is right now that we put tens if not hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives in immediate jeopardy
I don't understand the logic of staying in Iraq and putting more US troops in jeaopardy, let alone the costs.
Do you agree with Cindy Sheehan? Should we immediately withdraw from Iraq? Or do you disagree?
Agree 100% with Cindy Sheehan--George W. Bush works for her and others in this country, not the other way around.
I believe the President should see Ms. Sheehan again
The President should meet with every family who lost a son or daughter in Iraq and explain the reasons why his daughters have not enlisted, since he claims that US Troops being in Iraq is so "noble". (Since he has so much free time.)
I believe we as a people have to face the fact that we will have to have some military presence in Iraq indefinitely, perhaps like Korea.
I believe that, just as the US left Vietnam high and dry (for political reasons), the exact same thing will happen in Iraq, possibly before the 2006 elections.
It is also important that the maximum age for enlistment has been raised to 42--if one feels that strongly about the need for a US presence, there's a lot of military recruiters who's love to hear from you.

Posted:

ok mb, I lived thru the 60's too. The First Amendment has been gutted by the adoption of the Patriot Act and the ten year extension to it. (However, instead of differring views being tolerated, it is now acceptable to personally attack the individual who holds them as unpatrtiotic.)
I feel that Cindy Sheehan using Casey's name to further peace is nothing that would shame anyone. IMO, that in itself is a tribute to Casey.

Then you will be stuck with a President who has just set the record for spending the most time of any sitting President on vacation. That's right, Bush actually did something--he beat Ronald Reagan's 8 year record and Bush still has approximately 3.5 years to go in this term!
Anyone (besides me) curious as to what the eventual total will be?

By that logic, every cop, firefigher,...etc., who died on the job also knew the risks and was just doing his/her job when killed. (Don't recall ever seeing a surviving spouse/family member of a late cop/firefighter/etc. be harassed for speaking their mind re: the deceased and whatever chanes in policy could have made the difference.)

Cindy Sheehan should fight jihadists

Cindy Sheehan met with Bush BEFORE DSM and Karl Rove's outing of Valerie Plame. Both issues make a difference. And no Bush administration spokesperson, let alone Bush himself, has confirmed OR denied the existence of DSM. Also, Bush keeps changing his stories re: Karl Rove, just as he changed his reason(s) for the US being in Iraq to begin with. Cindy Sheehan deserves answers to her questions, just as others in this country do.

Has US lost the war in Iraq like Vietnam?

The US going into Iraq was a lost cause to begin with. Now bush will be trying to drum up more support from the public for the war in Iraq and it is NOT going to happen.
My reasoning: last nite I was at a vigil for Cindy Sheehan. (In a fairly conservative area, I might add.) The media was there in force. I was shocked to discover that there were many former bush supporters in attendance who regretted voting for him and were not shy about saying that on camera or to the press.
Another thing to consider is the fact that people do not want to see their children go to Iraq and come home in a box. Public opinion does not support the war in Iraq. It's just a matter of time--probably right before the 2006 elections, before the troops are withdrawn.
