My book of poems melted last night
I found it sodden and stiff in a November frost
and the words from a hundred rambles had melted at the edges
though near the binding the ink had not surrendered,
they were still words, though each ended line, and merged
and now were all watercolored horizons
(and thats why I'll keep using colored inks and fountain pens)
that opened book is now more precious and
why was I sad at all?
or thought I could not paint?
those pages will fill so many frames
with more than I could ever see
these watercolored reveries

10/16/09 Albuquerque; before setting the piece

culmination does sometimes come with much sweat
and apprehension
and heavy iron thrust skyward
to stand upon the horizon, tall
for that is where his art would reach
ungainly and bright
it speaks of whimsy, too
and calls each passerby to smile
and remember they are still children, too
and have thought in images brighter
than now they know
and brighter then, their smile

10/16/09 Albuquerque; after setting the Piece
The shackles away and now only upon some
hopeful steel tethers
rides this imagined thing, now real
and true to what it was meant to be
like my own wishes, even dreams
not yet true, but manifesting themselves,
held yet, by some other shackles
that must be loosed
and allowed what movement
that must come
to be also real

now september wains
and the trees begin to nod
for fall is upon the heavens
and this golden light gathers itself
and the dark hours grow
as the deep sleep nears
yet before it comes, the trees will blaze
in bright defiance
a fire, branding promise too,
before the grey frost comes
of a spring unglimsed
but sure

3/2/09 I recall
And call it goodness when in a moment you can smile
when the sun is enough in it's warming,
and breezes come,
welcome to a heart needful of that releif
goodness too, those moments when turning home
and memory washes through those quiet thoughtful times
and those now gone whisper sombre things
and we remember;
when that solitude, of sorrows wrought
that spread upon that time now past
is just the shadow of a life that knew much light
and it is good that I recall

8/22/09 before
an old love comes
and now what remains will testify
to all that ever was
that there should be kindness,
and some small joy
these remnants I hope remain
and too, all that is true,
not now masked by desire
trusting sorrow has done much mending
and too, refined
our kindred hearts
to bear within them, as if a breath,
that still and luminous delight
the very grace of love

Casualties of the heart now unfold
unmended memories claiming heartspace,
their rightful home
and every intended eviction of lovers now lost,
our own soul denies.
Though buried deep, they're near,
their resurrection sure,
till sorrow can soften,
or bitterness break
that heart that loved...

edgy, sharpened cyberschtick, as though some counted coup
for they're quick witted too,
and sharply call a cynics tune across this place,
that is nowhere at all
and fools, and I, would tap some serenade,
as though to seize some dream
from some netherplace
or otheplace that has no "where" to go,
nor from..
still, between electrons bounce the searchers
upon some quantum quest
and fantasy thrives like fungus, and calls perfection true
'till it blinds me to some flawed yet present soul
and present flesh
that I might touch

Emerging, dawn, amidst a freshening light.
with air scented of summer, spills into my room
just now, this bed seems emty and too still,
and I miss the scent of another soul
that is not upon that summer air...
nor a sleepy sigh to gently blend with the birds that call
beyond my room
this summer dawn bears beauty in a stillness
and glory for the heavens, too
but still sometime, there is but my echo; hear?
that echo in an empty sky

it fell hard and had stood a hundred years
and left a place in space I'd never seen when I'd come home
it had taken too long to die
broken on the ground the birch's bark showed the broken limbs
as bleached old bones
and it did leave a hole in the sky
and it had been a thousand homes
and I'd heard a different song in every one
and I would miss that too,
and seen so many fledgelings fly
and found the remnants of so many shells
they would be sacattered about the tree
in summer when the young ones flew
and squirrels too, I had watched in silouette
their frenzied traffic too, I'd miss
the nest I found, I'm sure had seemed so safe
in the hollowed heart of that great tree
I will tend those kits, as best I can, it is my final trust,
and wait in hope, until that mother comes
I hated the crashing of that great white tree

hope always helps me make it through my days
even when I'm stuck in being me and cease to look, or even see
when all I know is what I want, or think I need
and worry crowds a little close
It's then that I remember, for that to me is hope,
That the sky is blue, yet deeper too,
and I have loved, though I forget
that love is not a lie,

7/30/09 I like to stay up all night 'cause of mornings like this,
and once in a while things do rhyme ,in a cosmic sense

God was on my roof today,
He was pointing at the sky
and spinning sugar into clouds
but I've known Him to do peculiar things
and for some I've wondered why
but I can trust Him for His reasons
for cotton candy in the sky

Why bother with this love?
If love is sated on desire
and only serves a passion well
or is it more than I would see
and ever only virtues call
for self to serve and not to rule
that patience teach me to be kind
and forgiveness nurture each and all

only the shadows in our hearts replaced
what all possesed; a child's sight
each dream deferred, the less we see
until wisdom calls all dreamers fools
sweet fools, we watch, and we yearn to go
but they press on, not looking back,
their eyes grow wide with wonder, too
and those dreamers call
and some still hear
"there's more out here, come, don't look back!"

to participate would be really lovely
to feel that pull,
refreshing like a welcome fragrant breeze,
stirring me to wakefulness
from some safe slumber
yet anxious not to play the fool
still I would hold my breath, unknowingly,
at that first touch, and pause before that invitation
in that startled moment of confession,
then yeild an unarmed heart

7/25/09 (that my son would know that rain)
the summer dried grasses stand sharper now.
without that wilting of dry spring
and the green is not so bright
but pales now in the heat
and the ground too, mutes
waiting for the rain
summer rains, much more of bounty than of promise
though at it's comming,
there would be no need to know the reason why
amidst that fragrant, cool and welcome jubilee

touching for whatever is left that is whole
'midst sorrow,refined
from tatters and fragments, now freed from such dross
as memories, old lovers, postcards, the promised...
washed clean with wise tears
and found with new eyes
pure, a birthstone in gentle light

(Nice leave Joro, love your whimsy)
Gee, now I feel better
God's in a housecoat, on my roof
with a purple cat that I swear has mange
But I don't, nor would presume to suggest, the company He keep
for He can't change and He knows why, and you might guess
but while He's there, I would inquire
for there are hints, but I've not been told
the why of pain and of desire
and why the two,
inexplicably linked
and the fleeting moments of real bliss
and who ever thought to try a kiss
I understand the moon, it's pull and then the tide
But why must joy be so high, if not as wide

Tomorrow, we'll see...
if scars can heal because the tears have dried
if anything changed because we tried
if taking gains us anything
or if gain alone will serve

Tomorrow we'll see
if lies will serve, if their beleived
or were we not the ones deceived
if all the goodness we professed
when tested, was found true

this is actually the front of a short story, but in a beat kinda way, it's lyrical
from"Adult Toys, Magnum Condoms, And That Little "Ding""

Sometimes I wish I could just unzip the sky,
in the middle, just unzip it.
Those parting heavens would speak,
whadda ya think, would that do it?
Probably not 'cause gimme time and I always fall back on suspicion
or imagination, I can't tell which
most 'a the time
or even if there's a difference, frankly,
when it comes to that..
But sometimes, I'm tellin' ya, it just looks
like it's a curtain hangin' there
So I start thinkin' zipper, unmask that "Absolute"
or "Higher Power", I mean walk right up
pull the beard or whatever,
'Cause I mean there are times
when this all seems just a little hollow,
only like its on purpose
So I say screw it, I'm goin' for the zipper
peeeek ah boooo....

7/15/09 porch music

this porch and I share much time on summer nights
after the goodnights to passerbys
and when the sun has barely set
the sprinklers tat a water tune
as traffic mutes, now but passing lights
of white and red
then I pluck just single notes
and listen to them fade
before this summer quarter moon
while trees portray in sillouette
audience to the serenade

for reminiscence will ponder every feature
and recall the very scent ,
as an eleoquent reflection
of the fusion of each sense
in perfect thrall,
as tentative fingers first brushed her hair
from azure eyes,
and revealed a gaze
that held the moment in perfection

connected deeply at our core
by what we know
yet I would still reach
for it is in hope, though not yet faith
that not all of what I see
and even as a child sensed
is true
that there is only a transient scrawl we leave behind
among 10 million millions
perhaps there is a cosmic reason that we love
and call it timeless
and while loving burn so brightly

Somw say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

7/13/09 rainy summer day
I heard the patter upon first waking,
this summer day would bring warm rain
the light I saw was softer
it eased me patient, from my sleep
to start the day almost gently
there seemed no hurry
and I was mindless of the time
summer rain seems to be a mercy
perhaps some mercy could be mine

I've resisted since to hurry
I am grateful for these soft grey skies,
and there is a hush upon my worries
almost a stretching of very time
and I heard myself to whisper,
unaware and easy
breathing softly "it's so sublime..."

7/11/09 we will always be their fathers

Abel Garcia Contreras speaks words as true as his gaze
as we pause and I feel the track of sweat upon my back,
he tells me of his home
above the town thats near the sea
in Composino
the house near done, upon the hill that has the road
that he has made and lined with limes
and lemons he has planted
in the country where his heart belongs
and I see now he is a richer man
possesed of more than I can buy
I wish that when he goes that I could go along
we speak then of our children, ,and polite, he hears me out
then kind, unknots my complications
"they will always be our children" he explains and more
"siempre seremos sus padres"
then shrugs the subject closed
we share the water and a moment,
and return to the work we have, this summers day
and I look and see much more than I supposed
and I have much less to say

lost cause
Posted: 7/10/2009 11:59:55 PM
I collected all my squandered moments
to turn them in for the deposit
I lined them up to segregate them
by lenghth and reason and what did cause it

I pulled some out, to my surprising,
for there were some I'd not exchange
because the payment was not sufficient
it was a moment I would not change

Some moments were like doodles,
and did not seem profound
and others unproductive
but they'd often calm me down

and in the end I found I'd wasted
to much effort , that was plain
so I have kept those squandered moments
and might just squander them again

then burst beyond the door of that too closed room
of aching phantoms that do not touch
but all lamenting leave a puddle
I must splash through

with crashing colors crossing heaven
here to drench me now and cleanse

here in each heart and act of compassion
where gentler natures reign
and author mercy
there is room for strangers and the broken
and they'll learn of rest and too, of hope
when they have trusted, and found it wisdom
and seen love and heard it spoke.

7/10/09 balancing delusion
better to let some wishhes slip from consideration
when they hold too much sway upon imagination
when I feel the gathering pull
of another fairytale I tell
then told I often listen
and like a wishful child
too eager to beleive
let it crowd upon too many waking moments
better to let them slip, for I weave these tales
from too real disappointments
as though revenge were a happy ending
or wishing would heal a scar
this childs thinking is more of wanting magic
and better left to come in dreams unbidden
better left before the waking comes
and instead to seek real wonders
and then behold them, with open eyes

let me be free for these few moments
to be where there are no words or numbers upon a page
let it be a time unmeasured
and the meter be of some beloved song
that lilts and breezes
sweet and cool, a perfumed air that's all about me
and if fantasy or foolish dream
it will still be a gentle musing
and there will be no need for knowing
just a sweet imagining

insane is feeling that freedom again
and giving rein to heedless need
and call it nothing less
let the lonely stand and proclaim
their strength, that strength I understand
but I will not call this desire weakness
nor from weakness sprung
but I have known that fire
and would fan that flame
and come close
to know how bright it burns

Some passion dreamed upon a sleepless night
long and gently pondered
and this time sweet, and I blush, foolish
for I am
and choose to be
for the gravity of the wise does not draw me
and would choose passion a thousand times
even knowing of the pain that wisdom shunns
and where all suffering comes
but joy too, for I would have it all, and too, peace,
how can I choose to let passion pass,
and catch myself from turning
for I am breathless with the very thought
and it is a warmth upon my soul
and there is the scent of love about it

Its as if they fell out of a book
do not know their place upon a page
that I had placed them on a shelf
to gather dust and left to age
they do not know their place within the story,
not the one that I had told
I did not know that they claimed heartspace
or the sureness of their hold
that they awaited resurection
silent yes, but never gone
they are the space between the verses
they are the chorus to the song

I do sometimes love these summer sleepless nights,
and almost restless, I will wander
perhaps it is the wandering, when no one is about
but the night air almost cool and the windows down
I love these too,
and mornings slow arrival, even sleepless
brings a soothing yawn
and then I go about some peaceful chore
to trim a rose that I normally neglect,
and too, the moon just now is setting
in the reding dawn display
I love these all and this now
and it is barely yet today

I will see today that gentle face,
a face I saw upon his birth
and as he grew
this time will be too soon spent
and even now the farewell,
too soon said, hovers
two decades past, and he will show their passing
upon his face, all echoed in his eyes
I will savor the child he springs from,
I will see that child there
and as Uncle, I will listen
and touch him when I can
for I touched his face upon his birthing
and held him as my blooded kin

as you release your soul from body
the tethers of the senses hold a gentle sway
and lovely now, without attachment
show that technicolor grandeur of an ordinary day
beyond these words, or greed for explanation
pure as any image dreamed
release too, from a million concepts and assumptions
then will all narrations cease
and then in wordless perfect wonder, perfect peace

rise late sleeper for the morning has near passed
but pause before you shake those morning dreams
and did those clouds of tumbled pictures speak
so speak while they still stir
were there old lover or familiar fears in masquerade
was it mystery or wishes in fantasy portrayed
what words will you choose to paste upon those images
your eyes have never seen
and what will that choosing say
about those harmless phantoms conjured by a restless mind
rise late sleeper and see the day and what is true
and let your senses fill
for birds still call, let it be song,
and all is bright and the wind is true
and these passing clouds carry omly summer rain

they trace a careful orbit
that live a cautious life
and despite the gravity that each soul bears
and senses, as a weight of glory,
that gravity that would bring collision
a fool would avoid
for we would touch or meld
or bend in our solitary navigation
and then perhaps to trace another path
but the fearful and fools avoid the warp that comes
from the nearnes of another soul
and remain perhaps as lonley orbs
amidst 10 million shining stars
that choose to dance

but give the boot
to trepidation, and grant no quarter to regret,
recall instead anticipation,
And asked if beaten,
say not yet,
no heart can thrive on timid hesitation,
no passion burns when quenched by fear
For love is never seeking harbor,
it seeks the wind to fill the sails
it is not bound to shallow waters
and we are told, it never fails

I wear my heart out on my sleeve
still, and knowing from what has been,
the price of caution is to not beleive,
and not risk the hurt that may be again,
He is no fool who risks what he cannot keep
to gain what he cannot buy
Love will go where it is sent,
and there are tears in a life well spent

now deceased,
but then still speaks
and hearing petulant regret
I resurect that notion of fidelity
that peculiar virtue
of all about to be
betrayed and played as fool
yet despite that proof
and prides protest
I'll not regret that love was given rule

stand haiku
upon it's head it is the same
17 syllables, all in 3 lines
no needed rhyme
or twisted lines
it hints at truth sometimes sublime
a picture framed yet it can bring
the halo of some deeper thing

Answers may not come at all
and will not be missed
or pondered like some remnant
of some day that's passed

but questioning she will peer
and hopefull she might see
and leave what might have been
and seek for what might be
