Opinions on Half-Sleeve Tattoos on the opposite sex
Posted: 6/22/2008 11:06:02 AM
Graffiti just interferes with my enjoyment of the architecture , so "NO" to tattoos on women.

I have seen maybe one or two discreetly placed, tasteful drawings on women, but that is not very many in the context of 40+ years of ardent interest in the unadorned canvas.

Is Obama gonna be good for BC?
Posted: 6/21/2008 7:53:42 PM
The Dems are generally the party of protectionism, so any Democratic administration is likely bad news for Canada and canadians.

Of course, we canadians tend to feel politically closer to the Democrats than to the Republicans, but that is, after all, just a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Do women like being ignored?

“A woman is like your shadow - follow her, she flies; fly from her, she follows” Nicolas de Chamfort - 18th century playwright.

As we can see, this is not a new idea.

Perhaps we might think of this as a remark on the odd attraction some (most? all?) women have to the "bad boy".

Ignoring her then becomes part of the abusive "bad boy" repertoire, and she apparently laps this up and wants more of the same.

I don't claim to understand it, but like the OP, I have seen it in operation enough times that I believe it cannot be all that uncommon.

My somewhat selfish desire is that we all get in touch with what we really want and learn to ask for it. This would go a long way toward simplifying my life in this 21st century....

Have a great day.

Russ

PS: M. Chamfort seems to have been a pretty insightful man, here is another gem : “The contemplative life is often miserable. One must act more, think less, and not watch oneself live.”

WEIRDEST DATE EVER
Posted: 5/17/2008 4:22:04 PM
It turned out to be . . .

(drum roll)

AN AMWAY MEETING.

In true Canadian fashion I made the best of it in a polite and respectful manner. I just really would rather not go into details....

Advised only to go to Emergency for Emergencies
Posted: 5/4/2008 1:34:25 PM
Using the ER for non-emergencies is a horrible waste of resources. An office visit to a family physician might cost $30 while a trip to the ER could easily eat up hundreds of scarce tax dollars....

I do not expect Jane Q Public to self-diagnose, but to act responsibly in her use of the healthcare resources we all share.

Triage via a call to the physician's office or to the Nurses Line or your pharmacist can help you make the decision as to whether to dial "911" , proceed to the ER on your own steam, or to get some sleep and see a physician next week.

Oh, and don't forget to pick up your copy of the "BC Health Guide" at the pharmacy. It is worth its weight in harried ER nurses.

Jury Duty...Jump in or avoid like the plague????
Posted: 5/4/2008 12:31:39 PM
We do not want juries solely composed of retirees, welfare folks and the independently wealthy, BUT we set the compensation for jury duty at a pathetic level that doesn't even cover lunch.

Tough one - a saw-off of Duty vs Hardship. Lucky me has never been called up :-)

do men actually like curvy women vs the skinny pencil one?
Posted: 5/4/2008 12:17:34 PM
I like women who don't stress over this (or any other) unimportant topic. Someone secure enough to not worry about the width of her shadow.

Its my job to foster an environment where she feels secure enough to thrive and to grow.

Should grains be used for bio-fuels/energy?
Posted: 5/3/2008 7:58:21 PM
The short answer is "yes".

The long answer is that it makes a lot of sense to extract what is really solar energy from any efficient source. We in Canada are very good at growing grain, and we already have a huge infrastructure to support this activity.

By burning any quickly renewable source of carbon, we are in effect using the same carbon atoms over and over again as we continuously cycle carbon through the growth-harvest-combustion cycle. This reduces the greenhouse gas impact of this activity to very close to zero - depending on the efficiency of the whole system.
You could then think of a field of grain as a giant solar energy collector. :-)

What needs to be worked out is the most efficient way to use this energy. Is it better to use e.g. canola oil than to go through the conversion to ethanol ? I suspect it is. Ethanol is not very energy-dense as each molecule has only two carbon atoms (compare to gasoline at 8 or 10, canola oil at 18).

Lets allow the market to operate to give us the most efficient process, shall we ?

Spotting a POFer on the street
Posted: 5/3/2008 3:30:29 PM
Happened to me while getting x-rayed. The tech was a POFer and recognized me. The bone was unbroken :-)

I recognize POF faces in public quite often, but will not violate anyone's confidentiality under those circumstances.

In private (like the x-ray table) I am happy to do so - after all, we already have at least one thing in common and that suits my gregarious nature.

After a certain ammount of time here you're not allowed to change your age.
Posted: 5/3/2008 3:08:14 PM
This is really a *feature* to help keep the fishes honest.

One's height, ethnicity, address, etc are all subject to change, so should be changeable. (Plasticity of Ethnicity? Think of U.S. senator Obama).

The date you were decanted, however, is a matter of historical record.

Strangest question you've been asked at work?
Posted: 12/31/2007 3:39:40 PM
I work in a health care field, so questions like "Can I get pregnant in a hot tub?" are surprisingly commonplace.

The answer we dream of giving is "Not by yourself". The real, mundane answer is, of course "Yes".

I am left wondering if this is some belief the boyfriend has encouraged or what?

Lots of other questions come to mind, but most require way too much context to be funny here.

Happy new year.

What would you do?Any advice?
Posted: 10/14/2007 10:48:31 AM
Um.
Here is the "gorilla in the corner of the room" that we are ignoring:

Your beloved pet may have met an unfortunate end while in the care of your co-worker, and perhaps "gone to northern Ontario" is her way of telling you that. Maybe she thought you were a tad fragile in the immediate post-natal period, and somehow hit on the idea of "softening the blow" with a falsehood.

Perhaps she regrets the whole thing, but in the climate of hostility that now prevails, feels unable to correct things.

I know of someone whose canine charge was attacked and killed by a stray. Fortunately she was honest with the grieving owner and took her lumps.

I love dogs - I like whatever it is in people that makes them dog lovers, but this had to be said..
