Summer is Here, How Many of you CANT Swim...
Posted: 6/20/2009 11:50:42 AM
I took swimming lessons every summer growing up, lessons in the morning and then recreation swimming after lunch and again, after supper. I couldn't get enough time in the pool! There was a time when I wanted to be a competitive swimmer, but being from a small town, the opportunities back then were pretty limited. I was a very strong swimmer for many years, but I would not say that I am now....really should get back into it, though.

As a mom, I had my daughter in lessons every year, too. If you are going to have your children around water, it is so important to have them aware of water safety and know how to swim.

As for getting that phone call...my sister did. Her eldest son had been swimming with a friend's family (adults were there) at a public pool. There were three lifeguards on duty, one was doing his job, one was at the store buying slushies, and the third was showing off her new bathing suit to friends when my nephew went under....and never returned to the surface. The autopsy report came back saying that with the amount of water in his lungs, he had been under for at least 30 minutes and when the RCMP divers went down as part of their investigation, they went to the exact spot where my nephew's body was discovered. They said in their report that had they not known where to look, they would not have seen the diver....the water was that murky.

The pool had a leak and was immediately shut down.

I guess that is just a little message that even in a public pool with adults and lifeguards in attendance, tragic things can happen. Seeing what my sister and brother in-law went through, I would not wish that on any parent!

Anyone notice the new feature, Want a date on Friday night?
Posted: 6/20/2009 9:30:19 AM
I don't think that new feature is something for me. I prefer getting to know a person prior to meeting, seeing if there are any common interests or if we spark each other's interest enough to want to meet. To put myself on some list for random strangers to hook-up with me for a date on a whim would make me feel somewhat like an escort, I think.

The REDSOX!!!
Posted: 6/20/2009 9:17:15 AM
I got invited to a function at the University of Calgary in January where Buckner was the keynote speaker.. The weather was so $hitty and cold that I didn't go. I'm kicking myself now for it because I had sooooooooooooo many questions for that man!

Now as for Pap, he is with the Sox until 2011 and what I got from his comments was that he was that when the time comes, he will keep his options open. The reporter kinda fired a loaded question at him when asking about the Yankees specifically. He had also said he would love to remain a Red Sox....

What word or phrase need to be put to bed
Posted: 6/20/2009 9:06:05 AM
When you are explaining something bad that has happened and the person you are talking to can only respond with "Do you want some cheese with that whine?" cos they don't know what else to say.

When people use basically or actually in every other sentence. I notice this one a lot when I am transcribing my interviews.

As another poster said, 24/7. There was a girl from my hometown who was telling my dad about her new job. Enthusiastically, she told him, "I am working 24/7, six days a week!" Well, I think if you don't know what a phrase means, you should not be using it!!

My aunt got so tired of hearing "whatever", "I don't care" and "I don't know" whenever she asked her boys what they wanted for lunch, now if they say whatever they get homemade soup, I don't care is sandwiches and I don't know is leftovers. The soup and leftovers that are in the freezer are even marked that way!! lol

true redsox fans are rarely seen outside of the boston area

Wrong again. I've been a Sox fan for more than 20years, but I guess in your eyes, I'm just a wannabe and cheap imposter.

Yank fans who say the Redsox "suck" are basically doing it to bust balls in retribution to the meaningless banter that the "nation" say about the Yanks.........does that make them wannabees in your puny mind?

So, it's justifiable for the Yanks fans and nobody else...that sounds typical.

Problem With The Yankees?
Posted: 6/17/2009 5:54:57 PM
It was me. I did it. I fess up. I took one of Manny's stinky old jerseys cos I didn't think anybody at Fenway would miss it. Then, I flirted with a couple of construction workers and they were only too happy to do me a favor and bury the jersey!

If you can't tell then he/she must not be doing a very good job of it.....

Actually, I think the exact opposite is true. With a really good player, you won't know...until it's too late and you've already fallen for him.

They certainly did sweep them! The Sox started rallying in the eighth when Sabathia hit the 120-pitch mark.

Being in western Canada, our sports channels don't show a lot of Sox games, so spending 20 bucks a month on ML.TV is money well-spent for me...you can watch up to four games at a time, too. I haven't done that yet tho, I think it would do my head in!lol

Screw sending the Sox hat to JAC. Send it to me. I need to add to my collection. Besides, I would give that hat nothing but TLC. JAC would probably trample on it!

question about david letterman
Posted: 6/11/2009 10:47:34 PM
Well then, if you listened to the apologies, you would know he NEVER used the word rape in the joke and would know Letterman was not referring to the daughter who is a minor. He only used the word 'rape' in his apology because that is the word Palin used when she contacted the Letterman office. Personally, I thought the joke, even if it was tasteless, was more of a jab at A-Rod's womanizing ways than at Palin's daughter!

Maybe A-Rod isn't pissed because he has broad shoulders and was able to sluff it off.

Well, if the Yanks are going to win one, it will be this one. Sabathia against Penny....If CC is on his game, and I have no doubt he will be, the seven or so innings they keep him on the mound will have to bring out the best in our Sox.

I do like the way Penny has been pitching, tho, so I think this game could get down to a duel between pitchers.

Yes, I'm a Stunna
Posted: 6/6/2009 10:07:05 AM
Ok, here's a specific query for you music folks. There is a commercial on Sportsnet that plays a few seconds of a rap song...All I can get from it is, "Yes, I'm a stunna" (I think).

It has a very infectious beat that I can't get out of my head. I don't know who sings it and as for the words.....I have checked online and have found several songs, but not the right one!!

Anyway, if anybody knows which song it is, could ya help this old girl out?

I need to find same one to love so I can change my loyalty
Posted: 6/6/2009 9:58:39 AM
OP, any one of my exes could call me up in the time of need and I would do whatever I could to help them out...but, making breakfast for them every morning at 5:30 am is not going to happen. Neither is living within close proximity to them.

I don't know how fresh this breakup is, but something tells me you aren't completely over her yet. It's one thing to be a loyal friend of an ex. It is quite another to be at their beck and call, serving brekkie to them. If you are over her, what are you going to do when you go to make the morning coffee and find that you're making breakfast for her and her new BF?

She may not have somebody new now, but eventually she will. Be prepared to handle that when it happens. You need to quit making her breakfast and you need to find new living accommodations...pronto! You can still be a loyal friend without being a jellyfish!!

Good luck!

What do you consider the best sports movies, by sport
Posted: 6/5/2009 7:04:05 PM
I know there are some great sports movies I left off my list. I took my 22-year old daughter (an athlete for life) out for supper tonight and I brought up this thread...about our fave sports movies. She said to me, "Oh my God, mom! I can't believe you left off Any Given Sunday! Pacino gives a speech that still sends shivers through me!"

Ok, so I think this is the one she is talking about and you can ignore it or take a minute to read and remember it:
Tony D'Amato: I don’t know what to say, really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives. All comes down to today, and either, we heal as a team, or we're gonna crumble. Inch by inch, play by play. Until we're finished. We're in hell right now, gentlemen. Believe me. And, we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one inch at a time. Now I can't do it for ya, I'm too old. I look around, I see these young faces and I think, I mean, I've made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make. I, uh, I've pissed away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who's ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know, when you get old, in life, things get taken from you. I mean, that's... that's... that's a part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losin' stuff. You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those inches, that's gonna make the ****ing difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying! I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. And I know, if I'm gonna have any life anymore it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch, because that's what living is, the six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it. You've got to look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes. Now I think ya going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. Your gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team, because he knows when it comes down to it your gonna do the same for him. That's a team, gentlemen, and either, we heal, now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's football guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

What's wrong with asking for a photo?
Posted: 6/4/2009 10:11:40 AM
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for a photo if they don't have one on their profile. If they feel uncomfortable having their mug showing for all the world to see, they do have the option of keeping the pics private.

Even if somebody only has one photo, I ask at some point in getting to know the guy if he has another one. There are some who will lift a pic from someplace else and post it as themselves. Recently, I was chatting with a guy whose face looked really familiar to me. Turns out the pic was a promo shot of PGA golfer Adam Scott! LOL

If they refuse to show me another photo, then I will make the assumption that they are not the person depicted in the sole photo they have displayed.

There are lots of deceptive people out there. Erring on the side of caution is a good thing!

If you had your choice to travel tomorrow where would you go?
Posted: 6/3/2009 7:57:09 AM
There are lots of places I would love to visit, but at this time of year, the choice is an easy one...Fenway Park to watch my Sox play ball. I would sit watch some great baseball, eat some great food, and drink some great beer! I would be sitting there like an eager kid waiting for a long ball to come flying my way...and hopefully, there would be a handsome Sox fan sitting next to me! lol

Then, of course I would take in all the sights and architecture...Cape Cod,maybe and spend some time lounging on the beach.

Aruba is high on the list, as are Jamaica and Cuba. Spain and Portugal would also be nice.

I am lucky enough to have the majestic Rocky Mountains only a few hours away and I could return to Jasper and Banff over and over again for the breathtaking beauty.

Dawgma, I just had a colleague return from an 11-week tour of South America. One of the many places he visited was Machu Picchu in Peru. That is a place that I too, would love to visit. He said it was very nice, but is getting commercialized. You don't see that side of it on National Geographic!!!

I think he lied to you and contacted you after thinking you had forgot about it...or he forgot about the lie himself! Ask him how his hand is doing? If he forgot about the lie, that could spark an interesting conversation! lol

I think that would be pretty rude, actually...at least until the two of you have reached a comfortable level with each other. If you feel comfy in each other's company, it might be alright. If it is still in the getting-to-know-you stage, I'm not sure how I would react. I would probably tell the guy it is none of his business.

I mean really, do you want a dinner date...somebody you barely know...to ask you if you're packing deadwood in between bites of salad???

It happens on here, OP. I too have gotten emails where they want to meet after one email. I just tell them I'm not comfortable meeting up after one note, most are okay with it, a few are persuasive, but only on the rare occasion do they get rude about it. I did have one guy call me a b!tch for not being willing to drive four hours for a cup of coffee...after a single note!! lol

Post your profile on a hook up site, you'll probably get more hits than here. I think this site is primarily for dating.

The Jays have certainly lost their stride. They've left 40 runners in scoring position in seven losses, so the opportunity to score has been there. Ryan has been put into the middle of the rotation and he isn't pitching his best...and he typically is one of my fave closers.
