Getting used to being single.
Posted: 11/24/2009 10:56:12 AM
I've got too used to doing what I want, when I want and if I want.

There's no one to make excuses to, no one to 'ask' if it's OK to do whatever I want to do, no one waiting with the proverbial rolling pin because I'm half an hour late getting home, no one to ask "do you fancy an early night?" (Oh, hold on a mo'...... maybe being single isn't all that great!)

When (or if) your partner has had more lovers than you?
Posted: 11/23/2009 6:11:50 AM
TBH it doesn't bother me so much as for all her past partners they don't seem to have been as good as me in that sense

Is that what she told you?

Arguably, they shouldn't be allowed to sell cigarettes if you're not even allowed to smoke there.

Don't they sell condoms in Sainsbury's?

I've just had a look at your posting history OP and boy. you come over as totally neurotic!

You're a great looking girl and I'm sure you have a lovely personality, but you are going to frighten off every guy within 10 miles of you if you don't relax and stop being so bloody DESPERATE!!!

Get a grip of yourself, go on a course to boost your self esteem or some such thing, because right now you seem to think you're pretty worthless and unattractive, and do you know what happens when you think you're worthless and unattractive? You guessed it........ you become worthless and unattractive!

Ignore the government...

Thereby ignoring all laws set by them presumably.

Ignore the police

Thereby ignoring those who are trying to uphold those laws.

I don't much fancy living in your world!

I presume that murder, rape, burglary, terrorism etc are OK with you then? Or are you being a little bit 'selective' here? Ignore the laws that you don't like and be grateful for the ones that work in your favour?

Virgin Broadband
Posted: 11/17/2009 4:52:19 AM
As with some other posters I was with Telewest for a long time before Virgin took over.

Telewest's customer service was certainly better than Virgin's because they only used UK call centres. Unfortunately the overseas call centre that Virgin use is bloody useless; if you ring up with a problem they always say "There is a service issue in your area but it will be fixed within the next 24 - 48 hours". That is rarely the case and they just use that to get you off the line!

If you ring in the morning you are more likely to get one of their UK call centres and I have always found them to be extremely helpful.

I have the 10Mb service and have just done a speedtest using http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Currently my service is running at 9.917Mb so that's OK by me!

Buying a business
Posted: 11/13/2009 2:14:18 PM

You could try to make an arrangement with the current owners

That's known as 'creative financing' and there are plenty of options open to you in the current financial climate.

Any business on sale today is likely to struggle to get what they want so there's nearly always a deal to be struck. Use your imagination, offer them a percentage of turnover / profits; offer to rent the premises for a fixed term; suggest some form of seller finance. ..... and don't be put off by those who have no ambition, those who would happily suggest that now is not the time to be starting a business. They are the ones who will never make anything of their lives... who don't think that a risk is worth taking. It is!

The triumph of hope over experience
Posted: 11/13/2009 10:41:20 AM
^^^^^^
Absolutely right Msg 8.

We all have 'baggage' whether we like it or not. It's called 'experience'. The baggage I have been left with is 'Widowhood'...... it's not as if I wanted my wife to die, she just did. Does that mean that I should forget her and move on? Or does it mean that I still love her but need to move on? Well, it's the latter! And I guess that's baggage.

Most potential partners would find that hard to live with, but there is no way at all that I could deny my wife's existence, or my feelings for her.

Many people have suffered a breakdown in their relationship, maybe that is something that you can eventually leave behind, but being left unexpectedly through an illness is not quite so simple.

I get so many rejections I've started replying with the following: -

Dear (Name),

Thank you for your message of xx/xx/2009. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to embark on a relationship with me.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejections. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite your outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the position of Significant Other next Monday, I look forward to seeing you then.

Yours sincerely

Seeing as this is a site primarily for dating and meeting new people. Have any of you ever met up with someone without playing email tag? By which i mean, 1-2 emails with the basic phone number, and just getting on with it?

Yes.

One e.mail each way, one phone call, and a three month relationship. Distance killed it off unfortunately, we lived 120 miles apart and visits had to be planned rather than impromptu, and we both wanted more than that. It was great while it lasted though and we are still friends.

Fort Hood shooting - What are the questions? What are the answers?
Posted: 11/6/2009 1:21:57 PM

The army has to take some responsibility for this, too.

Very true! I wonder how many Hasan shot and how many were shot by 'friendly fire', something the American forces happen to be totally brilliant at!

He shot (reportedly) 42 people with 2 guns that hold, at most 20 shots, each. Even if he was the World's best marksman and scored a hit every time, which is fairly unlikely you have to admit, then at least 2 people were hit by 'friendly fire'..... more likely half of them were!

Still the point remains that a gun is a tool and it's usefulness or detriment depends solely upon the user. It is inherently neither good, nor bad.

So its a bit like the nuclear bomb then eh? Its a tool, it might even be beautiful to some, but it can be a little bit unhealthy in the wrong hands.

Nidal Hasan Shoots & Kills 12 US Soldiers
Posted: 11/6/2009 2:46:09 AM

According to reports he used 2 hand guns...pistols, the maximum number of rounds per gun could not exceed 20 shots per gun, and assuming some missed their intended targets, he must have had time to reload the pistols....

Reports now coming out say that a number of the victims were shot by 'friendly fire' - typical of the American forces, they seem to always manage to do that.

Never a truer word! Now every parent thinks that their newborn is the most beautiful thing in the world, right?

We didn't! Our son was so bloody ugly we were ashamed to show him to anyone! I'm not joking, he was seriously not an attractive baby.

He's 25 next week and a really good looking lad!

Fireworks Landing Zones
Posted: 11/5/2009 2:03:39 PM
We always have a street bonfire party on the Saturday nearest 5th November.

My son and his mates have been gathering bonfire material for the past couple of months, my double garage is full of old chairs, beds, fence panels etc etc. and my neighbours garden is full of wooden palletts from the factory their lad works at.

The bonfire this year will be huge!

We collect money from all the neighbours for the fireworks and my job is to do a 250 mile round trip tomorrow to get our fireworks from the Standard Fireworks Factory shop in Huddersfield. Last year I got nearly £1,000 worth of display fireworks for only £300.

The area where we set the firworks off is roped off and we have some of the neighbours on 'safety duty' making sure that no one gets hurt or does anything silly. This will be our 13th year of doing this and it's great fun.

The bloke did something stupid whilst drunk.........I suggest you go out on the town one night near and army barracks or when the fleet's in at any port........if you want to see disgraceful drunken debauchery you will be in for a treat......service men are notorious for their wild partying...........get some perspective ffs!

Yes, you're right. Service personnel get to party a bit when they are on leave. And so they should.... but I bet you'd never find a single one of them who would urinate on a monument to their dead colleagues, past and recent.

You obviously don't give a fart for them, don't care that millions have given their lives for the life that we lead now, don't care that somewhere in your family tree, one of your ancestors, probably gave his life so that you could be free to spout your drivel.

They would be so proud of you.

should he be jailed
Posted: 11/5/2009 11:58:43 AM
No, he shouldn't be sent to prison but he should pay for this despicable act in some other way. One I could think of is that he should be made to walk around the British War Graves in Normandy (at his own expense, not the taxpayer's) and see if he still wants to pee on a war memorial when he's read a thousand or more headstones!

I agree with Badge in some respects, bring back the stocks on the village green (or the modern day equivalent - the out of town shopping centre car park)
and let him find out just how people feel about his disrespectful and despicable actions.

I bet his pathetic little mates thought he was a hero for doing such a brave thing!

I can't believe the comments by some of the posters on this thread "Oh well, he was only peeing, what does it matter" etc.... It matters a great deal!!!

He unrinated on a war memorial. Many of the names on those memorials are for people who never returned from action overseas, not even in a box! So for their relatives it is the equivalent of a grave.

The worst part of this is that it's not an isolated incident. I go to Riga in Latvia very often on business and the stag groups from the UK think its fun to urinate on the Freedom Monument, a monument to the freedom, independence and sovereignty of Latvia. A monument to those who fought and died in the Latvian War of Independence. A monument that is loved and revered throughout the country......... but hey! Lets pee on it guys, what the f*ck does it matter, it's only some silly memorial to some dead people!!

Should Cars Have Black Boxes ?
Posted: 11/4/2009 2:12:50 AM

I can't see how a black box would improve road safety, because it's only ever going to be used after an accident has happened.

You could say the same thing about aircraft black boxes, they are only used after an accident.... but they have been instrumental in making flying the safest form of transport because the cause of accidents can be fully analysed and safer aircraft designed around the results of the analysis.

Could the same thing happen to road transport? Maybe it would help.

I'm afraid I fall into the camp of "If you are doing nothing wrong you have nothing to fear" so I would welcome the addition of a black box if it would help road safety.

So, what's 'wrong' with The Daily Mail and those who read it?
Posted: 10/23/2009 12:03:13 PM
I found Jan Moir's article incredibly upsetting, as I'm sure many others did.

She said "Healthy and fit 33-year-old men do not just climb into their pyjamas and go to sleep on the sofa, never to wake up again." But they do!

I lost a close friend some 20 years ago to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome..... he was 33 at the time and, to my knowledge, was considered fit and healthy.

We had met up for a drink on the Thursday evening as he wanted to discuss a new business idea he had, he was animated and excited about his future prospects.

On the Saturday morning I had a phone call from his wife, between hysterical sobbing I heard her say......... "Tony died during the night, we have no idea what happened!" I was totally gobsmacked.

The post mortem found nothing physically wrong with him.......... he had just died in his sleep. It was a devastating experience for his wife and children, and his friends of course.

He never took drugs, never smoked, drank only socially and was never inclined to homosexuality. We will never know what it was that caused his death but it certainly wasn't due to a 'debauched lifestyle'.

fat-ism, the next one for the pc brigade?
Posted: 10/23/2009 11:46:55 AM
being fat is largely a lifestyle choice.

I know some people can't avoid it but I'm pretty sure that most fatties could lose weight if they really wanted / needed to. So fatism is OK by me!

Height-ism is the one that gets my blood boiling. Why can some airlines be allowed to charge extra for a seat with more legroom when their standard seats are too bloody cramped for anyone over 'average' height?

I didn't ask to be tall, I can't lose some height by going on a diet, it wasn't a 'lifestyle choice'......... but if I want a comfy seat on a plane I have to pay extra for it!!!

Ethical shopping dilemma.
Posted: 10/23/2009 10:30:50 AM

I'm fed up buying expensive T shirts, in fact I'm not doing it again!

So I bought 20 plain white T's from Primark. They cost £40. To be honest I've paid more than that for one 'fashion brand' T shirt.

Then a friend jokingly said they were made by child labour!

There's not a lot of difference really............ your £40 'designer' T shirt was probably made in a sweat shop as well, the only difference being that the 'designer' brand makes a few thousand percent profit for the 'designer' as opposed to a few hundred percent for Primark.

Stabilising the World Economy...Gordon Brown??
Posted: 10/9/2009 4:33:20 AM

Did any of you know that to get Britain out of debt EVERY single person in the country, yes all 61.1 million of us, would have to pay around £100,000 each?!

Your figures might be true if we were looking at paying off not only the National Debt, but every single debt that every person in the UK has accrued, their mortgages, credit cards, personal loans etc, but I'm not too keen on that idea personally.

The National debt currently stands at around £700 billion, which equates to around £11,500 for each man, woman and child..... mind you, that's more than enough I reckon!

car damaged during service
Posted: 10/6/2009 2:41:29 AM

With regard to all the people making you paranoid about chassis alignment and damaged pillars, ignore it, it's just people on the Internet overacting on very little information as normal.

You could be right of course but the comment by the OP.........
"the door still shuts securely although it is kinked between the back and front windows."
........ makes some of us think it could be more than just a damaged door.

Surely if someone is not 'clued up' on cars it makes sense to get an expert opinion?

car damaged during service
Posted: 10/5/2009 1:01:59 PM

That does sound like a damaged pillar to me

It does to me as well.

I really think that the OP should get her insurance company involved, they will send an engineer to check over the damage before the garage starts work on it. This would not affect any 'no claims bonus' you have, as the garage have admitted responsibility.

I know it sounds as if its a decent little garage but, at the end of the day, this is their fault, and you should be making sure that your car is returned to you in the condition it was in prior to the accident.

Have bankers ruined the economy? are we partly to blame?
Posted: 10/5/2009 12:39:24 PM
The USA started this with the Sub Prime market and then off loaded the risk to everybody

That's not strictly true although they did have a great deal to do with it.

Don't forget that there has been a 'sub-prime' market in the UK for many years with lenders falling over themselves to give money to people who had little or no chance of repaying the loan.

The 'self-cert' mortgage market in the UK started as far back as the late 1980's (under Tory rule when, we are told, 'there were tight regulations in place that would prevent any problems with the banking system in this country').

Proof of income and creditworthiness became secondary to a booming house price market. "You have County Court Judgements and you can't prove your income? No problem, how much would you like to borrow!"

The lenders thought that they were well covered as far as equity went as prices were rocketing upwards. They were wrong of course and suffered heavy losses in the house price crash of the early 90's.

The problem is that they didn't learn. Many of them withdrew self-cert mortgage products for a few years, but then greed took over again as yet another house price boom began and so the cycle continues.

Hopefully the lesson has been well and truly rammed home now, but sadly I very much doubt it!

In 7 or 8 years time the dinner party conversations will again be "How much has your house gone up by this month? My bank has been brilliant, they've just lent me £3 million to buy a 2 up 2 down terraced house in Bolton and they didn't ask if I can afford it. No problem, it'll be worth £5 million by this time next year! "

Are they really studying this in the UK? Golddigging is not a myth.

The UK is in decline. If they want to study something there, it has to be something real simple.

Perhaps that's why we like to study Texans, after all there's nothing much simpler is there?

The limits of patience

If that person were me I might consider giving up on the idea of romantic affection altogether and turning to merely materialistic and hedonistic concerns.

That person is you.......... go on admit it!

And there ain't too much wrong with being materialistic and shagging the odd pro from time to time.

What are you all looking like that for? I didn't say I did that sort of thing, just that it might suit the OP's circumstances. I, of course, wouldn't dream of building my wealth whilst renting a bit of love whenever the need arises!

Grannys Boney Finger, Terrorised Teenage Boy

Bring back the Equalizer, no point poor innocent Grannies getting into trouble, Edward Woodward would do a much better job.

The Equaliser was a wuss compared to Charles Bronson in Death Wish......... bring back the Vigilante!

The fact that Mrs Bowling was prosecuted is frankly disgusting. Yes, OK, we have gone all lovely and PC nowadays and can't touch anyone for fear of prosecution but what on earth ever happened to common sense? Was the boy prosecuted for throwing stones at her windows? I bet he wasn't.

This is slightly off topic but also shows how ridiculous the law can be. Being bored last evening I was watching one of those real life police documentaries, Road Wars or Street Wars, something like that anyway.

One of the scenes shown was a couple of girls who had gone into a fish & chip shop after an evening in the pub. They were pretty drunk but didn't appear to be completely blathered, if you know what I mean.

It seems that when the woman behind the counter in the fish shop asked one of the girls for £3.50 the girl said "How much?".

"I want £3.50 you f*cking white b1tch!" was the answer from behind the counter.

The girl complained to a couple of policemen who were in their police van in the square outside the shop.

She got pretty upset and made a racist remark (which was bleeped out) about the woman in the shop. She was immediately arrested for making that remark, handcuffed, bundled into the back of the van and taken to the police station where, (good for her) she refused an £80 'on the spot fine' and elected to go to court.

No comment was made by either the programme makers or the police about the fact that she was called a 'f*cking white b1tch' but the fact that she presumably made a similarly racist remark was enough to get her arrested and charged.

Family holidays for 2010 where to go to?

People are very quick to criticise and not so forthcoming with the praise!

I agree with you, but its an unfortunate fact that the majority of Holiday Reps fit the same mould, useless young idiots who are only doing the job because it offers 24 hour a day booze and 24 hour a day sex in a more exotic climate than good old Britain.

It sounds as if you have a much more professional team and I applaud you for that.
