"Oh man...where in the was I? Just when I thought that I had seen all of the fun..."
Wendy... I think that you and Janet were Jell-o and on your way home by then...
No worries, your invited to the Jello'd pool-dle party
maybe we oughtta try it out (the jello) in the Ja*cool*ie first (we ARE in a recession)
might be more economical eh?

IMO.. I think it was the spirit of the goat of last Christmas..that made you drink(just Kid din)
I probably shouldnt have Ouso'd as much as I did either. Luckily I didnt have to drive far :) but I came very close to ordering several truck loads of Jello for the pool... stranger things have happened.
Super man/men might have been there.. but one thing is for sure there were Ooodles of Superwomen there.. and all Survived the Ouso and the goat cheese.
Summer isnt over yet.. all we need is a helicopter to make the commute easier.
Janet.. I will keep an eye out for your toe
Thank you one and all

Did "Superman" ever get a chance to belly dance with the goats.. I think I missed that episode. he really IS faster than a speeding bullet, I thought I saw him working the meat on wooden skewers (somehow I would hope that super man would slow down for some of his activities) Goat milking excluded.
meat on skewers, belly dancing scarves, goats and olive Oyl and Superman ....throw a hot tub in (or throw all of the ingredients INTO a hot tub) and you have most of the ingredients for a relatively kinky party...

When they don't call after a shower???

ROFL
Those "Dirty Dogs"!
I think it was rude of both of them to call you BEFORE showering... NEXT TIME you give a guy your phone number, remind them to always be freshly showered BEFORE calling you. You might also ask them which hospital they live near (just in case) they really did slip on a bar of soap.
That really is strange that you got two in a row! People are strange!
Consider yourself lucky they didnt call back!

"Um what about adults that choose drugs over their kids... would you rather see those innocent kids in loving homes of their own blood relations... or being split apart & raised in foster care... "
Thank you for posting that... I was going to reply to the post above yours, but decided that it was ALMOST not worth replying to..
Whether the parents of these children have chosen drugs, alcohol, have mental illness, or physical limitations,. or selfishness over caring for their children .
What ever the reason... the littles ones are innocent. These little ones (the grands) DO deserve to be with family if its at all possible depending on the grandparents ability and capabilities to care for these kids.
To the person who has determined that grandparents that are raising grandchildren are ALL enablers, and have FAILED to raise their own children etc... I respect the fact that you are entitled to your opinion... and also can respect your need to generalize about this particular subject ... if it simplifies life for you, thats a good thing...and you can throw labels around all you wish. If you yourself are a grandparent or become one in the future, I hope that you are one of the grandparents who can visit with the grands and then send them home to a safe, and healthy home with their parents...and I pray that something doesnt all of a sudden go terribly wrong, and one of your kids finds themselves unable to manage caring for their child/YOUR grandchild... and that you are not faced with the decision that some of us have been faced with....
I would NEVER turn my grandchildren away. I would "ENABLE my grandkids to feel safe and secure in a familiar home and with family that love them.
Bama, I commend you for doing what you can for the kids.. obviously the kids are with you because they need someone to care for them... I am happy they have someone to care for them.. I hope that their parents somehow pull it together and get with the program and start caring for their kids..
this thread is veering off topic a bit ...
things that grandparents who are caring for our grandkids can do for fun??... speaking for myself , I have accepted the fact that my options are somewhat limited now... I use to travel quite a bit, and looked forward to this time in my life when I was able to work less and take extended vacations... now my vacations include the kids. I plan my social life around the kids needs... slows one down quite a bit in some ways and in other ways.. keeps you young and RUNNING all the time!

They go home every day and you get to spoil them rotten and after they leave?????????????
Mine dont GO home they COME home to my house, I use to spoil them rotten then send them home, and those were really fun times.. but now I just give them everything they need and then some.. especially love and a sense of security and home.
As to dating grandparents,., I guess the OP wasnt specific about whether they are raising their grandkids or just a NORMAL grandparent who get to visit their grandchildren. When they live with you full time and you are not only their grandparent but their mom and dad and everything else... dating becomes difficult and more complex.... most people raise their kids and look forward to lots of time without kids.. with occassional visits from grandchildren.
the "
" part is what I do everyday.... they have me running and jumping around all the time!!

Would you take in your grandchildren???
Posted:
9/10/2008 12:36:54 PM
Yes I would and I have them now and would do it again.
Extended family (if possible is ALWAYS the best for the child) if the parents are unable to provide a safe, healthy, environment for their kids...
There is no way I would allow my grandkids to be placed in a strangers home when I have the means to care for them.
It is hard enough for these little ones to be removed from the care of their moms and dads....and in many cases the kids have been traumatized in one way or another... I could never turn my back on them.
Yes.. doing it alone is not exactly the easiest thing I have ever done.. (lol)thats putting it mildly. and yes it definately places limits on your social life ... in fact it changes your whole life , just when you think you had it all figured out. They are alot of work, but keep me young and active and they are happy, content and secure and thriving inspite of the situation that their parents have put them in. There is nothing more important to me then to make sure that these two fine young boys dont miss one bit of their childhood!
For anyone who is new to this situation... just know that there is help for those of you who may not have the room in your homes or the means to care for these children.
Grandparents as Parents , is easy enough to Google....

How many of you are grandparents are raising their grandchildren?
Posted:
9/10/2008 12:10:17 PM
Just checking back in here.... its been close to 6 months and the kids are still with me, summer vacation is over and they are back in school! and I know for sure that their school year will not be interupted again as it has in the past four years because I have some legal help now.
This means I can get back to work and on occasion meet with friends /without the kids for lunch etc. So far the parents ( my daughter and the kids father) will sporatically exercise their visitations with their children... I am told that in California they have around 18 months to pull their act together before losing parental rights..... I hope for the sake of the kids and my daughter that a miracle occurs, but have to plan for the alternative which would be , me adopting the boys... there is no way I would allow them to be adopted outside of my home if that became a reality.... there is no way I would wish to date a man that didnt understand my choice.... reality check..... I may end up without a special man in my life, but I gain two very special little men who really appreciate me! There are local support groups for us grandparents or other relative caregivers.... Grandparents as Parents is easy enough to google!

There are quite a few (thousands) of grandparents raising their grandchildren for various reasons.... most of US are doing so because the children need to be raised by somebody!! ... Some of us ARE single...(and many of us are still young or at least young at heart)
I feel that the best people to raise a child is OF COURSE their parent/parents, but there are times and situations when that is not possible,, grandparents/or any family member are a better alternative to a foster home and the possibility of the children being split up! Most of us are ever hopeful that the parents of these kids can turn things around in their lives (unless the parents are deceased of course)..
"
"So perhaps maybe you should let your kids raise their own kids ??? "
"Honestly....that is exactly what I was thinking. I don't understand what being a grandparent has to do with you dating. That doesn't even make any sense unless you mean they live with you. "
Being a single parent and dating has some difficulties.... being a single grandparent who are raising grandchildren full time is difficult as well....
I was looking through the POF site to see if there were any groups of single grandparents that got together in the southern california area and found this thread...
anyone out there?

I had planned on relaxing in the pool all weekend.. lots of friends called and asked to come by.. of course the door is always open here and everyone got to float around in the pool... I spent 90 percent of the time preparing food to barbeque and running back and forth into the house get ice out of the icemaker in the kitchen to cool everyones drinks and to refill the coolers outside! lol.. hey not complaining but I was hot and tired by the end of the day! ( I did get some swimming in) and I really enjoyed all of the company, but I didnt relax in the pool... I have been washing and drying lots of towels since everyone left about half an hour ago!

Blue Cheese Sauce/Stilton sauce
Posted:
6/14/2008 5:46:35 AM
That is the recipe website that I go to whenever I need to find a specific recipe, or to get recipe ideas and make changes to them to suit my taste buds. Its easy to navigate, and I have tried many recipes from there that are excellent! In the above recipe, it either calls for salt or to use the rind on the cheese, this sauce is salty enough without adding any more.
Glad you asked about this and reminded me of a long time favorite of mine as I am grilling steaks for fathers day this weekend and the sauce will be a welcome addition to my guests!!

Blue Cheese Sauce/Stilton sauce
Posted:

Yumm, but OH SOOOO fattening!
Shave or crumble about 1- 1 1/2 CUPS of the Blue cheese into a small heavy sauce pan.
2Add about 1/4 cup mayonnaise . (This keeps everything together).
3I add a LOT (a full teaspoon) of pepper, I grind it right into the pan. Fresh really makes a difference.
4Add salt to taste (I don't use any if I use the rind of the cheese as it is often hardened with salt).
5Warm the pan slowly while constantly stirring. It will melt, don't give up.
6If you heat it too fast, or don't still it will separate.
7The mayo will forgive some sins, but not many, so stir constantly!
8This will make a THICK sauce.
9More mayo will thin it some.
10Milk can thin it if it is too strong.

The Slow Cooker AKA Crock Pot
Posted:
5/28/2008 11:04:34 PM
This weekend I found out for a quicker clean up they actually have crockpot bags. They keep them with the saran rap and tinfoil etc.Bit bag lines the pot and then you just take out after all it eaten.AWESOME
Thanks for the tip, I have always just gotten those big roasting bags (that you get for doing turkeys in)
I love the fact that you can just pull the bag out , and seal it with any leftovers, and its much easier to clean up after using the crock pot!
Great thread, thanks for reminding me, I use my crock pot more often in the summer months, time to get back out again.
Someone mentioned making cakes in the crock pot, I have never tried it before. Any good tips?

because if my date irritates me I can leave him saran wrapped to a tree.
and if theres a date palm nearby, you could have him bagged with the other dates on the tree until he becomes ripe.... or dries up.* see the fruits and nuts section or the recipe threads of the POF forums

It's Time To Bring Out The Grill......
Posted:

What if we used a can of ORANGE SODA instead of Beer. That way you make Orange Chicken. Just a little Ginger and Poulty seasoning
I was also thinking about mixing ginger ale and orange soda. the only part i hate in preparing this dish is stuffing the bird on the can.. it seems sooooo barbaric! lol
that sounds great, I will try that next time. I have also used a can of coke and used this premade kansas city bbq rub on the chicken. that turned out great.. (i will definately try using the orange soda with ginger and that poultry seasoning.. ) anyway you make this chicken it always turns out juicy and tender.
another favorite on the grill is bbq'ing fish on a plank.. (you can buy them at any decent fish market) this year I was going to make my own by visiting the local lumber yard and having them cut the wood for me, a light sanding job by me and they should work great. You can reuse the boards several times since they only get charred on the bottom. Be sure to soak the planks for at least a few hours in water before placing on the grill, and light oil or butter on the plank before you place the fish on it.
heres a simple one for salmon
Soak a cedar plank, or other suitable wood (raw, not treated or stained)
for at least 4 hours or overnight if you have the time. Place salmon skin side down in a glass pan. Mix remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Pour over salmon, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Place salmon on plank and cook on plank in bbq heated to about 400 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes until meat flakes easily
you can also top with a tartar sauce . or creamy horseradish, or whatever your favorite seasonings
white cedar, hickory or alder wood work the best in my experience..
the fish comes out perfect and your grill stays clean!
I started using planks of wood for cooking fish when I use to go camping all the time, but it works great on your home grill too.

Grandma booboo... I too have a similar situation.. and have been thinking about options for the children .. i have four grandkids 18,15,10 and 8 (the two youngest are in my full time care) unfortunately the parents are financially irresponsible and would probably blow any and all assets left for the care of the kids. I will check into this myself as it seems a viable solution

Sounds like a great idea Bob... the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere, easy to find and hey.... I would enjoy meeting and having lunch with a group of fun (califorum fishes) I have been to Kathleens quite a few times and it has been consistantly great food. They do have a bar there, although I dont think I would be drinking at lunch since I would have to eventually get home and care for my grandsons after they get out of school.
we could bring potatoe launchers and marshmallow launchers for after lunch!! hee hee
I hope some of the others here can make it, its easy to get to, parking is free, and there is something on the menu for everyone. My lunch time favorite there is either their french onion soup or spinach salad.
Count me in Bob!

I would be more the marshmallow shooter type... (jet puffed marshmallows make great projectiles and you can recycle them) after using them you can fold them into your favorite brownie recipe!

Thanks for the link to potato launchers! I had heard of sabots before.... but the potato launcher sounds like something my grandsons should NEVER find out about!! lol
So we'd be launching ripe fish, dipped in paraffin (1/8" should do), wrapped in a sabot, down range 200 to 300 yards. The package should break on impact and splatter well
I'm sure glad that I wasnt the one who emailed you my phone number!!!!! roflmao... she didnt know what she was getting herself into... hahahaha, be sure to let us know if she emails you again!!!! :)
I really should look into getting some of that equipment for getting rid of leftover fish chowder!! (wondering if I have to defrost the chowder prior to dipping it in parafin!)

(still wondering what that potato gun is like) add potatoes, celery, onions, spices and some cream and you might come up with a great fish chowder!

The fish that scare me the most are the ones looking for "instant boyfriend - just add water by General Mills".
or instant sex just add water, or crank up the computer , enter POF website and order the dish of the day from the menu, hoping that they can find one that offers door to door service.

full-time single dads

As a single grandmother (raising two grandkids) I too have the utmost respect for you!
I have four grandkids, the first two lived with me for several years, until my ex SIL decided to take on the task of full time care for them, now I have two more with me who have been with me for the most part of 4 years they are now 8 and 10....mom is sick and unfortunately their father just doesnt want the responsibility on a full time basis... but just wants to be there for the sports!
Kids are alot of FUN, and there are sooo many rewards for you as parents as they grow, but they also are alot of work and require sacrificing alot, but they are so worth it. I personally believe that there is nothing more important for one to do then to raise their own children.
My grandkids are very well adjusted (thank goodness) inspite of the selfish parents which they ended up with, but it hurts me to think of all of the wonderful experiences and times that the parents are missing out on. (and vice versa)
I remain hopeful (for the kids and the parents) that at some point these guys parents finally figure out their priorities and hopefully include the children!
Keep up the good work guys!

Well SHeesh Bob....
Since this thread is on POF...
I guess the first song that comes to mind for me would be "Dreams" by Kenny Chesney
you didnt ask for lyrics, but anyone reading the lyrics or who knows the song would know just how it makes someone like me feel! It reminds me to check my drivers license to remind me of my age! lol....
She says most men her age want younger women.
She thinks her self esteem's not quite itself any more.
But she sees herself as more than what the mirror shows,
Why that's so important, heaven only knows.
When the important part for her is,
Souls and heart's sayin':
Dreams of sharin' a life and a home.
(Dreams.)
Of never ever bein' alone again.
(Dreams.)
Not even diamonds, just a little gold.
Someone there to hold her hand when she gets old.
Dreams, the kind you know will never end.
Forever lovers and forever friends.
Someone really there, to love and care, and share,
Dreams.
She swears she won't divorce a third time.
She swears the more she knows about love, the harder it is to find.
Her perfect picture of her white horse prince,
Is now dependent, dirty and promises,
Someone kind and brave.
Someone not afraid of:
Dreams of sharin' a life and a home
(Dreams.)
Of never ever bein' alone again.
(Dreams.)
Not even diamonds, just a little gold.
Someone there to hold her hand when she gets old.
Dreams, the kind you know will never end.
Forever lovers and forever friends.
Someone really there, to love and care, and share,
Dreams.
Oh, Dreams, the kind you know will never end.
Forever lovers, forever friends.
Someone really there, to love and care, and share,
Dreams.
She says most men her age want younger women.
I will be back to this thread and post some more later!

Interesting question and one that I can totally relate to.
When I was 47, I was exposed to chicken pox (never had them as a child) and within a few days ended up in Hospital in an isolation Intensive care unit. The chicken pox had gone to both lungs and double pnuemonia set in... at one point I had been pronounced dead (had 107 temp)... was revived. (this reported to me by my family and physicians) my experience was different from my point of view which is a long story and really a spiritual journey!

Spinach Salad

WARNING: To anyone who doesnt like bacon, or is avoiding bacon.
after you prepare your favorite spinach salad, try serving it in individual "BACON BOWLS" I also use these to make Breadless BLT"S...
use large muffin pan turned upside down, and weave uncooked "thick bacon" strips over the individual muffin cups.that have been covered by aluminum foil or parchment paper, place this on a large deep baking pan (to catch the drippings) bake in the oven at around 300 degrees, and keep an eye on it bake til the bacon is crisp/firm. Carefully remove from the oven (so you dont burn yourself with hot bacon grease) allow to cool slightly before removing the bacon cups. (best to just pull them off by the foil and slowly peel foil out of cups.) You can use canadian bacon for the bottom of the cup
I would recommend using a dressing that doesnt yet include the bacon bits! (for obvious reasons..

Chilli please

Interesting watching the chili debate....
I have participated in several Chili cookoffs....
I always made the traditional chili.... with no beans, and hand cut beef in very small cubes about the size of the tip of ones pinky finger, I would never use chili powder, only the fresh and dried chili's prepared as mentioned above, (set in hot water, then pureed) But... everyone always had a second pot cooking for what we would call "the peoples choice chili" lol...
The first pot was for the judges and your small /or large circle of friends... and the second pot (usually a much larger pot) was chili for the masses, in which we would throw in the extra cut beef and add ground beef, or pork or both... and of course Glorious beans.... my "peoples choice chili" would include three different kinds of beans and I always cooked up some basmati rice on the side for those who liked their chili on rice. At the same cook offs, some of the Peoples choice chili's were prepared using turkey, sausage, or chicken and ALways BEANS. Of course, I never cooked in Texas, but good chili is good chili where ever its prepared!
I learned a very cool trick to use in the cookoff.... right before its time for the judging... take a cut clove of garlic(fresh of course) and lift the lid of the pot and rub the clove around the inside rim of the pot. put the lid back on for a minute and serve... (I also do this at home right before I serve it )
Unfortunately, I have only won second place once (the rest of the times I was third place and the other times in fifth place... ) So I am not by any means an expert. I dont do it anymore because its toooooo much work and I just dont have that kind of time anymore.

First date statistics

There was a profile awhile back where the guy said anywhere but the beach because it would be too crowded with people from POF.
ROFL!
Just gave me an idea for a POF meet.... pick one night a month where california POF'ers show up on the beach /within walking distance to a coffee shop OF COURSE wearing a tshirt or a hat with a picture of the green dancing banana. Doesnt That sound romantic?
I think the suggestion for a first date of meeting at the beach at night is a bit crazy....
Personally I would have a problem with meeting a total stranger on the beach at night, that doesnt sound romantic to me at all. I love walking on the beach, during the day and at night, with someone that I know and trusted.

Places not to take dates in California

Those tar pits hardly have a smell--my God, hasn't anyone ever been near a house that's being reroofed?
If that's too boring or too "icky-smelling" for your date, it's great to know before you waste more time and money on her. Let her sit home with her People magazine, on a rainy day with a leaky roof! after a while the idea of smelling fresh tar might appeal to her!
